第三部分:阅读理解(每小题2分满分40分)
A
Do you want to live with a strong sense of peacefulness, happiness, goodness, and selfrespect? The collection of happiness actions broadly categorized as “honor” help y ou create this life of good feelings.
Here is an example to show how honorable actions create happiness.
Say a store clerk fails to charge us for an item. If we keep silent, and profit from the clerk's mistake, we would drive home with a sense of mean excitement. Later we might tell our family of friends about our good fortune. On the other hand, if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item, the clerk would be grateful and thank us for our honesty. We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honor that we might never share with another soul.
Then, what is it to do with our sense of happiness?
In the first case, where we don't tell the clerk, a couple of things would happen. Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief. In the process, we would lose some peace of mind and selfrespect. We would also demonstrate that we cannot be trusted, since we advertise our dishonor by telling our family and friends. We damage our own reputations by telling others. In contrast, bringing the error to the clerk's attention causes different things to happen. Immediately the clerk knows us honorable. Upon leaving the store,we feel honorable and our selfrespect is increased .Whenever we take honorable action we gain the deep internal rewards of goodness and a sense of nobility.
There is a beautiful positive cycle that is created by living a life of honorable actions. Honorable thoughts lead to honorable actions. Honorable actions lead us to a happier existence. And it's easy to think and act honorably again when we're happy. While the positive cycle can be difficult to start, once it's started, it's easy to continue. Keeping on doing good deeds brings us peace of mind, which is important for our happiness.
51.According to the passage, the positive action in the example contributes to our ________. A.selfrespect B.financial rewards
C.advertising ability D.friendly relationship
52.The author thinks that keeping silent about the uncharged item is equal to ________. A.lying B.stealing
C.cheating D.advertising
53.The underlined phrase “bringing the error to the clerk's attention”means ________. A.telling the truth to the clerk
B.offering advice to the clerk
C.asking the clerk to be more attentive
D.reminding the clerk of the charged item
54.Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?
A.How to Live Truthfully
B.Importance of Peacefulness
C.Ways of Gaining Self-¬respect
D.Happiness through Honorable Actions

Coffee is one of the world’s most widely-enjoyed drinks. Now, a new research suggests that if you drink enough coffee, it might help you avoid certain kinds of cancer.
Dr. Mia Hashibe of the University of Utah School of Medicine was interested in the connection between coffee drinking and certain cancers of the head and neck. Researchers have looked into this before, but without reaching any firm conclusions. She said, “So this finding from our new study was quite a surprise. We didn’t really have any expectation of which direction it could go into.”
To sort out the conclusion, Hashibe and her assistants used statistical(统计学的) techniques to, in effect, make one big study out of the earlier smaller studies. She explained, “Thanks to the earlier studied, we have a lot of more power than earlier studies that looked at this. And we
included 4,000 cancer patients who have cancer of the mouth and throat. And the 9,000 controls, people who don’t have cancer.” Those students in Europe and the United States found that people who drank a lot of coffee were less likely to develop cancers of the mouth and throat. “We saw 4 cups of coffee per day, ” Hashibe said, “This was the 40 percent decrease in risk. We didn’t see the same effect for drinking three cups or less per day.”
Mia, Hashibe said there was a weak connection between cancer risk and drinking coffee without caffeine. And she and her assistants found no proof that drinking tea provided the same protection as drinking coffee. Their research is published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.
Hashibe says it is not clear how coffee might protect drinkers from certain cancers. “There are a few chemicals that are known to be antioxidants (抗氧化物)in coffee. So we are thinking perhaps they are playing some sort of protective role against several canc ers.”
55.This passage is probably taken from __________

C .an old directory
D .a medical magazine

I had the meanest mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal, eggs and toast. Others had cokes and candy for lunch, while we had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different from other kids’. But at least I was not alone in my suffering. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.
My mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and what we were doing. We had to wear clean clothes every day. Other kids always wore their clothes for days. We reach the height of disgrace because she made our clothes herself, just to save money.
The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by 9:00 each night and up at 7:45 the next morning. So when my friends slept, my mother actually had the courage to break Child Labor Law. She made us work. I believed she lay awake all night thinking up mean things to do with us. Through the years, our friends’ report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing ,red for falling. My mother, however, would merely be content with black marks. None of us was allowed the pleasure of being a dropout.
She forced us to grow up into educated and honest adults. Using this as a background, I’m now trying to bring up my three children. I’m filled with pride and when my children think I am mean because I now thank God everyday for giving me the meanest mother in the world.

Surface Exploration. Robots make great explorers on planets, moons, and other landing areas .Aside from the Earth, just about every surface in the solar system is unsafe for humans to explore. The air on most other planets is insufficient for humans to breathe, making it necessary to wear a space suit and oxygen equipment. The temperatures on these surfaces are much too hot or too cold for any humans to withstand. Plus there would be complications with radiation , weather, and a lack of gravity. Robots have much less limitation in these areas and can survive much longer under these conditions.
Data Collection. Robots are designed for collecting scientific data. Robots are also able to perform many tasks at a time and can process information much quicker and more efficiently. Important scientific projects from detecting minerals, analyzing ground samples, and finding water are all performed more quickly and accurately(精确地) by robots.
Cost Effective. The use of robots has made the cost of space exploration much less expensive than it would cost for humans to do the work. In order to successfully send humans into space we would need to build a vehicle that can not only carry humans, but also enough food and water to keep them alive for the duration of the trip. Moreover, robots have no problems working for hours o n end. Robots never complain, they don’t require food or water, and they never need a bathroom break.
Space travel. Over the past 30 years or so there have been many different types of robots used successfully in the exploration of space. Perhaps the most famous and successful robots are the Spirit and Opportunity who have both been exploring the surface of Mars. They have both been very successful with experiments on soil and rocks and have even found evidence of water in Mar’s history.
63.According to the passage ,which of the following is NOT true?
A.The use of robots in space exploration cost more than the use of humans
B.It may be dangerous for humans to explore the solar system except the Earth.
C.Both the Spirit and Opportunity have found the evidence of water in the Mars.
D.Many different types of robots have explored the space successfully

65.The underlined word “withstand” most probably means “________’

Just as you know, it's all true.I remember how my heart was racing the first time I visited Times Square in New York.I can't find any words in the dictionary to describe how I felt at that moment. Someday, when you get lucky and go there, you will know what I mean.
Unfortunately, TV and movies never show the other side of what students must do to survive America.
Education in the States is really different from other places. Yes, there is the traditional A, B, C, and D grading system, and you get to be on the Dean's List if you have all A's on your
transcript. However, these grades don't just come from your test performances. The requirements of classes in the US are much more varied and this is the biggest adjustment that overseas students have to manage.
Some have papers that you have to write every week; others have group projects you must do with your classmates, presentations you make in the class, or research you do by yourself to prove your own idea. There comes a night when you have a couple of projects for different classes, a paper, and an exam to study for. And that night you ask yourself, “What did I get myself into?”
I'm not trying to intimidate you, but you should know what it really is like to study in the States. One thing I can promise you is that it is worth all the hard work you put in. And the more time you give to your study, the more open doors you will have by the time you finish your degree.
67.The author wrote this passage to ________.
A.help readers prepare for studying in the US
B.warn people of the dangers of living in the US
C.promote the US education system to overseas students
D.make readers understand the benefits of studying in the US
68.According to the author, America is ________.
A.a place that he could not get used to
B.a country where students can learn freely
C.a dangerous place to live in without family or friends
D.a place where people from different backgrounds get on well
69.When the author first visited Times Square, he felt ________.
A.disappointed B.surprised
C.excited D.nervous
70.According to the passage, which of the following is most challenging?
A.Attending all the classes.
B.Getting all A's in the tests.
C.Writing papers every week.
D.Balancing different study requirements.
