Motifs in The Pianist
The Pianist which is a typical war film narrates a Jew pianist Szpilman who lives through the most suffering and survives under the butcher of the Nazi in World War 2.As for me ,desperation and hope impressed me most .The butcher and the dead both give me the feeling of desperation .But the help of his friends and his love for piano give me the feeling of hope .Then in this article I will introduce 3 motifs of the movie which show me the desperation and hope in the war .The 3 are the snow ,the wall and the piano .
The first motif I will talk about is the snow .In this film ,the snow appears in many scenes ,especially in the back part when he begins to escape .It first occurs when Szpilman`s families were driven away to another concentration camp ,but he was saved alone .when he wanders in the desert street full of corpses .In my opinion ,snow indicates an atmosphere of distress .In this scene ,it only snows a little ,maybe it indicates the beginning of sorrow and the following suffering .It also occurs when the friends of him were arrested ,he escapes from the house wandering in the street that night . It snows heavily this time ,showing us he is in a very difficult circumstance .Which could not be ignored is that it snows when he was secondly saved by his friends ,he plays the piano impendingly ,a quick frame shows the snow outside his window .It was extravagant to play a piano for a pianist in a war .What a dole thing !All those snow give a feeling of desperation .
The second motif is the wall built to separate the Jews and the others .One evening when Szpilman going home , he sees the child who smuggle things is beating to death
in his arms .Another scene is similar to this ,because it is also about smuggle . Szpilman and his partner throw guns to the other side of the wall in the night .Another unforgettable scene is he climbs the wall when he escapes from the hospital .So he once again sets foot in this frightening area .The wall is not only a boundary of the outside world and the insides ,but also a boundary of live and death .The outside of the wall is a world that in there hope exists, but the inside world is dangerous ,which can only make people despair .
The third motif is the piano of course . Szpilman is a talented pianist who plays for the Warsaw radio .At the beginning and in the end of the film , Szpilman are playing the piano .However , in the main part of the film , we only see Szpilman playing
once ,when he plays for the Germany officer .Another three scenes which are related to piano are the playing when Szpilman works in the Germany restaurant ,the piano sound Szpilman hearing from the next door and the impending playing in the
house .The piano is Szpilman`s breath of life ,which support him live through the war and give him the hope to live .
All in all ,the war is curl ,it make people put down their frame ,their home and their dignity .To live is what they desire most .In this case ,a spirit support seems more important for a person .For Szpilman, the piano is his breath of life .The power of hope compete with the desperation and then ,the hope wins , In great desperation and difficult circumstance :the war ,the wall and the snow ,he survives ,because of the power of hope ,the piano .Thanks for the piano !。
