M: That's exactly what the mushroom asked. "What do mean you don't serve my kind...I'm a fun guy!" Fun-guy. You know, fungus ... See the mushroom's a fungus. Oh, never mind. It's kind of funny. E,M, are you there? Don't you get it? Fungus...Fungi...

M: Oh, you know what, don't humor me, .

M: You know maybe I should take me friend's comedy class. You know, polish my act a little. E,N: A little？
M: Yeah, you know polish it up a little.
N: 真的有这种专门教人讲笑话的课吗？
E:Oh, really?我也没听说过耶
M: Oh sure. My friend Jason teaches a stand up comedy class so I went to check it out.
E: 怎么样，有什么收获吗？
M: Actually the thing that surprised me the most was how serious the class was. Jason talked a lot about the pain and sorrow in comedy.
N: 痛苦，悲伤？你确定他们上的是喜剧课？
M: I was surprised too. But let's here from Jason as he describes his philosophy of comedy. N: Comedy is actually your pain turned into comedy; It's the things that affect you in your life. Unfortunately the things that most people will laugh at are your pain and your sorrow that actually is actually in their life as well in some sort of fashion。

E: Jason讲的倒是挺有道理的。

幽默就是把自己的痛苦经历当笑话讲给别人听。

这样既可以引起他们的共鸣，又可以让他们哈哈一笑，忘记了生活中的不愉快。

这的确是很深奥的道理。

M: I agree. As a comic Jason is not afraid of sharing the most painful parts of his life. During our interview as we were driving from his stand-up class Jason talked about how he grew up with a heart condition, his open heart surgery and the connection to comedy.
N: Comedy has always been dear to my heart. Um, I grew up with a heart condition. I had open-heart surgery. Um, I found that comedy was the unique thing that would bring people together.
E:And it was always something I could do to make them laugh and help them enjoy their life and actually take their pain and sorrow of their life, identify it with me ... and actually get some sort of ... maybe a closure or some sort of ending to their saga or their story.
N: 其实我们每个人在生活中都有这样的经历。

你越是在困难的时候就越想看喜剧片或者听听笑话。

M: Oh, I think so too.
E:嗯，希望我们每一位同学都可以开开心心地学习和生活，N,说着，我都有些想家乡的家人和朋友了，和他们在一起的日子很开心很难忘

E；My hometown is in xi'an,很有名的哦，你应该知道吧？
N: 嗯.....知道一点点，Xi'an is a well-known ancient town with a history of more than 3,600 years. It is one of the Four
Great ancient Capitals of China because it has been the capital of 13 dynasties. So is it just a very old traditional town then?
E:大家都知道西安是中国乃至世界有名的历史古都，3600多年的历史给这个古都添加了很多神秘感。

N: you get the modern aspects of Xi'an and the traditional, older parts of Xi'an. E: Modern 现代的，aspects 方面，样子。

Richard 说你可以看到西安不仅有现代的一面，而且仍然留有以前老城的样子。

N: Te older parts of Xi'an sit cheek by jowl, next to each other.
E: Yeah, you can see old men paying Mahjong on the street, and children with their red neckerchiefs coming to and from school.
N: 老人们坐在街上打麻将娱乐，孩子们带着红领巾上下学。

Red neckerchief 红领巾。

E: And many places in China are "rushing for glass and steel high rise buildings". N: Glass and steel high rise buildings 玻璃钢筋造就的高楼大厦。

E：But Xi'an is still trying to retain its charm and its Chinese character and traditions. To retain 保持，保留。

Chinese character and traditions 中国的特色和传统My favorite part of the town is in and around the city centre.
N: In and around the city centre 市中心和市中心周围。

E: The walls are fantastic, and they give you a feeling of what it must have been like years ago, when the wall was there to guard the town from、invaders. N:Guard 守卫；invader 侵略者。

I know! But you should tell us what you think is worth seeing in a day.
E: Here are some words and expressions. The Terracotta Warriors.

E: Muslim Quarter.

E:Well in a day you can see a few things, you've got to go to Bing Ma Yong, or the

E:But if you want a real experience of Xi'an, I'd probably say go to the Muslim Quarter. The Muslim Quarter;
N:its winding little back alleys, it's got great architecture, the old Chinese buildings with the eaves.
E:But you can wander around at the back streets, looking at the shops that sell all sorts, from Mao's little red books to Chinese clothing and all sorts of Chinese crafts, painting, calligraphy, etc.
N:It's a place within the city that you don't actually realize that you are right in the middle of a city of seven million people, its own sub or micro-environment. Well I think I know where I am going to visit when I visit to Xi'an next time. 接下来让我们听一首好听的歌曲，休息一下吧

M: Hi N. Thank you for the compliment but whether listeners like my voice isyet to be proved.
Ni: Yet to be proved. Well Rob, you have just used the word I'd like you to help with today. Let's listen to the question from David.
M:Hello, I am David from Beijing. I always feel both words 'ever' and 'yet' have rather
multi-explanations. Could you please make a summary? Thank you.
N: So David is looking for a summary of how the words 'yet' and 'ever' can be used, right?
M: Correct. It's quite a big question for a five-minute programme, I suppose?
N: Well let's not waste any time. Shall we do a mini-summary of the main usages? I'm sure we can do that.
M: Very good idea. So if you start with some examples I can perhaps help with the specific meanings of the word and the tone of voice.
N: OK, off we go then. 'Why are you in such a rush if it is not dark yet?'
M : 你干嘛急着走？天还没黑呢。

这句话里的yet 表示还不，还没有。

是副词。

N: The core usage of the word 'yet' is the sense of 'up till now' and as such it is used with an accompanying verb in the present perfect rather than in
the simple past.
Mi: 'Yet' 这个词的最基本的意思就是到目前为止如何如何，是副词。

在使用的时候通常和现在完成时连用，不可以使用一般过去时。

N: For example, you say 'He hasn't started yet' not 'He didn't start yet'; 'Have you had your lunch yet?' NOT 'Did you have lunch yet?'.
M: 比如他还没开始呢。

你吃过午饭了吗? 这两句话都要使用现在完成时。

What if you just say 'Have you had your lunch?' Any difference?
N: Well yes, it gives more emphasis to the meaning that something has not happened. OK, let's move on to another sentence. 'Are you moving to a
new flat soon?' 'Not yet.'
M: 短语not yet 表示现在还没有发生但是将来会发生的。

你找到新公寓了吗？还没有呢。

N: There is another phrase 'as yet': 'No one, as yet, has broken this record.' M: 到目前为止还没有人打破这项纪录。

其中as yet 用于表达到目前为止还没有怎么样。

一般用在否定句式里面。

N: Finally, you can also use 'yet' as a conjunction to mean 'but'. 'He is old, yet quite active. She is young yet wise.'
M: 'Yet' 可以当连词用，表示语气的转折。

虽然他老了但是仍然很活跃。

她很年轻但有智慧。

M: Well 'ever' is not a difficult word, is it?
N: No. Basically it means at any time or at all times, both in the past and in the future.

此处的ever 是very 的意思。

N: The whole team is working as hard as ever yet the boss is still not happy. M: The whole team is working as hard as ever yet the boss is still not happy. 整个团队都在拼命地干，可是老板还是不高兴。

N: Don't you worry. I am your friend forever.
M: Don't you worry. I am your friend forever. 别担心，我永远都是你的朋友。

N: As you can see, both 'yet' and 'ever' are small words that are usually in a sentence to give more emphasis on the sense of time.
M: 从以上的一些例句大家可以看出来这两个词在用于表示时间的句子里，起到一种强调的作用。

M: Of course. A health insurance company might say ‘ we aim to provide quality medical care for a good price’ or something like that.

M: I don’t think we should. It would be ag ainst our mission statement, remember? ‘We will provide the best PCs for the lowest price.’
