一、高中英语阅读理解
1.阅读理解
A typical child plays many roles, such as friend, neighbor, son or daughter. Simply reminding children of that fact can lead to better problem-solving and more flexible thinking, according to new research from Duke University.
Better problem-solving was just one positive finding of the study, said lead author Sarah Gaither, an assistant professor of psychology and neuroscience at Duke. After thinking about their own various identities, children also showed more flexible thinking about race and other social groupings—a behavior that could be valuable in an increasingly diverse society.
In a series of experiments, Gaither and her colleagues looked at 196 children, ages 6 and 7. In an experiment, one group of children was reminded that they had various identities, such as son, daughter, reader or helper. A second group of children was reminded of their multiple physical attributes, such as a mouth, arms and legs. All the children then needed to handle a few tasks
Children who were reminded of their various identities showed stronger problem-solving and creative thinking skills. When shown pictures of a bear staring at honey-filled beehive(蜂窝)high up in a tree, these children had more creative ideas for how the bear might get the honey, such as turning over a bowl so that it became a stool(凳子). In other words, they saw a new use for the bowl. Children who were reminded of their multiple roles also showed more flexible thinking about social groupings. When asked to categorize different photos of faces, they suggested many ways to Spso. They identified smiling faces such as unsmiling ones, and old and young faces. The other children, meanwhile, primarily grouped people's faces by race and gender(性别).
The-study suggests ways to promote flexible thinking for the young, which could be especially valuable for teachers." Gaither said.
"We have this tendency in our society to only think about ourselves in connection with one important group at a time," Gaither said. "When kids think that they have various identities, they show greater abilities."
(1)What are all the kids asked to do in the experiments?
A.Play different kinds of roles.
B.Remind others of their roles.
C.Approach several tasks.
D.Classify a group of tasks.

A.By giving examples.
B.By using experts' words.
C.By listing a few figures.
D.By showing cause and effect.
(3)What can we learn from Sarah Gaither's words?
A.Improving 5 kids flexible thinking ability is important teaching.
B.Kids tend to behave selflessly after thinking about their roles.
C.Kids' creative thinking ability is easy to discover and develop.
D.Teachers are supposed to make the most of the kids' flexibility.
(4)What is the best title for the text?
A.Kids' Social Abilities Are Consistent with. Their Education.

2.阅读理解
I became a magician by accident. When I was nine years old, I learned how to make a coin disappear. I'd read The Lord of the Rings and risked coming into the adult section of the library to search for a book of spells (魔法) — nine being that curious age at which you're old enough to work through more than 1, 200 pages of mysterious fantasy literature but young enough to still hold out hope that you might find a book of real, actual magic in the library. The book I found instead taught basic sleight-of-hand (戏法) technique, and I devoted the next months to practice. Initially, the magic wasn't any good. At first it wasn't even magic; it was just a trick — a bad trick. I spent hours each day in the bathroom running through the secret moves in front of the mirror. I dropped the coin over and over, a thousand times in a day, and after two weeks of this my mom got a carpet sample from the store and placed it under the mirror to eradicate the sound of the coin falling again and again.
I had heard my dad work through passages of new music on the piano, so I knew how to practice — slowly, deliberately, going for precision rather than speed. And then I tried the illusion
(错觉) in the mirror and an unbelievable scene took place. It did not look like a magic trick. It looked like a miracle. I knew that I had got what I wanted.
One day I made the performance on the playground. We had been playing football and were standing by the backstop in the field behind the school. A dozen people were watching. I showed the coin to everyone. Then it disappeared. The kids screamed. They yelled, laughed, scrambled away. Everyone went crazy. This was brilliant.
(1)What did the author enter the adult section of the library to do?
A. To kill his time.
B. To find a book of magic. C To read The Lord of the Rings. D. To learn knowledge of literature.(2)What does the underlined word "eradicate" in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Get rid of.
B. Give out.
C. Imitate.
D. Distinguish.
(3)What contributed to the author's success?
A. His mother's help.
B. The secret of quick moves.
C. The inspiration from his father.
D. His repeated hard practice.
(4)How would the author feel about the result of his performance on the playground?
A. It's fantastic.
B. It's funny.
C. It's awkward.
D. It's disappointing.
【答案】(1)B

3.阅读理解
At one time or another in your life you have probably done origami, even if it was just making a paper airplane or something more complicated like a paper crane. The chances are that as you did it, you reflected on how inventive this traditional art is. Animals, boxes, flowers, boats: it all can be created from a single square or rectangular sheet of paper simply by folding it. No cutting, no pasting.
But did you ever stop to think how the same techniques might be applied to engineering? Equipment that could be of real practical use? Origami meets the demand for things that need to be small when transported and large when they arrive, like the everyday umbrella. In fact, origami-inspired creations have already flown in space; in 1995, Japanese engineers launched a satellite with solar panels that folded like a map.
'It's now mathematically proven that you can pretty much fold anything," says physicist Robert J. Lang, who quit his engineering job eight years ago to fold things full time. Lang, an origami enthusiast since age six, advised a advised well-known ear manufacturer the best way to fold an airbag into a dashboard. He is currently working on a space telescope lens that, if all goes according to plan, should be able to unfold to the size of a football field.
At the other end of the scale, researchers are also working on tiny folding devices that could lead to breakthroughs in medicine and computing. There's no doubt that computers of the future may contain tiny, folded motors or capacitors for faster processing and better memory.
Applications for origami engineering go further than many of us might imagine. "Some day," says MIT's Erik Demaine, "we'll build reconfigurable (可重构的) robots that can fold on their own from one thing into another, like Transformers. Too much like science fiction to be true? Maybe—though you certainly wouldn't want to bet against it."
(1)What do we know about origami?
A. It consumes lots of time.
B. It involves interesting ideas.
C. It requires complex techniques.
D. It has to do with cutting and pasting.
(2)Which of the following is an application of origami?
A. A space telescope lens can be folded to the size of an umbrella.
B. A satellite is equipped with solar panels and a folded map.
C. An airbag can be better folded into a dashboard of a car.
D. A future computer contains many huge folded motors.
(3)What is Erik Demaine's attitude towards origami engineering?
A. Hopeful
B. Doubtful.
C. Disapproving.
D. Ambiguous.
(4)In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Entertainment.
B. Culture.
C. Education.
D. Pop-science.

Being forgiving to yourself and others can protect against stress and the harm it does to mental health, according to a new study in the Journal of Health Psychology.
Researchers looked at the effects of lifetime stress on a person's mental health, and how more forgiving people got along compared with people who weren't so forgiving. To do this, they asked 148 young adults to fill out questionnaires that assessed their levels of lifetime stress, their tendency to forgive and their mental and physical health.
No surprise, people with greater exposure to stress had worse mental and physical health. But the researchers also discovered that if people were highly forgiving of both themselves and others, that characteristic alone almost removed the connection between stress and mental illness.
"It's almost entirely erased—it's zero," says study author Toussaint. "If you don't have forgiving
tendencies, you feel the immediate effects of stress in a severe way. You don't have anything to cushion you against that stress."
How a forgiving personality protects a person from the influence of severe stress is hard to determine. The researchers infer that people who are more forgiving may adopt better skills to deal with stress, or their reaction to major stressors(压力源)may be slow.
Though more research is needed to fully understand the benefits of being more forgiving, Toussaint believes"100%"that forgiveness can be learned. His own previous research has shown that saying a short prayer on forgiveness can help people take the edge off. "I think most people want to feel good and forgiveness offers you the opportunity to do that," he says.
(1)The researchers got the effect of forgiving by_____.
A. analyzing questionnaires
B. doing scientific experiment
C. writing research papers
D. communicating with 148 adults
(2)What can we infer from the passage?
A. Forgiving tendencies can deal with all mental problems.
B. It remains unknown why forgiveness helps to reduce stress.
C. Toussaint's study has fully discovered the benefits of being forgiving.
D. Saying a short prayer on forgiveness is the key to getting rid of stress.
(3)What does the underlined phrase "take the edge off' in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Look ahead.
B. Become relaxed.
C. Make up their mind.
D. Stick to their goals.
(4)What may be the best title for the passage?
A. A new study on physical health
B. Forgiving yourself makes you feel good
C. Forgiveness is good for mental health
D. Getting rid of stress is good for your health

5.阅读理解
For most of us, work is the central, dominating fact of life. We spend more than half our conscious hours at work, preparing for work, traveling to and from work. What we do there largely determines our standard of living and our status to a considerable extent. It is sometimes said that because leisure has become more important, the injustices of work can be pushed into a corner, and that because most work is pretty intolerable, the people who do it should compensate for its boredom, frustrations and humiliations by concentrating their hopes on the other parts of their lives. For the foreseeable future, however, the material and psychological rewards which work can provide will continue to play a vital part in determining the satisfaction that life can offer.
Yet only a small minority can control the pace at which they work or the conditions where their work is done; only for a small minority does work offer scope for creativity, imagination or initiative.
Inequality at work is still one of the most glaring (明显的) forms of inequality in our society. We cannot hope to solve the more obvious problems of industrial life, many of which arise from the frustrations created by inequality at work, unless we handle it determinedly.
The most glaring inequality is that between managers and the rest. For most managers, work is an opportunity and a challenge. Their jobs engage their interest and allow them to develop their abilities. They are constantly learning. They are able to exercise responsibility. They have a considerable degree of control over their own and others' working lives. Most important of all, they have opportunities to initiate. By contrast, for most manual workers, work is a boring, dull, even painful experience. They spend all their working lives in intolerable conditions. The majority have little control over their work. It provides them with no opportunity for personal development. Many jobs are so routine that workers feel themselves to be mere cogs (齿轮) in the bureaucratic machine. As a direct consequence of their work experience, many workers feel alienated (疏远) from their work and their firm.
(1)In the writer's opinion, people judge others mainly by ________.
A. the type of work they do
B. the place where they work
C. the time they spend at work
D. the amount of money they earn
(2)According to the writer, to solve problems in an industrial society, we ________.
A. should create more working opportunities for the poor
B. have to get rid of the unequal aspects in work
C. had better cancel all managing positions in a company
D. should encourage the manual workers to promote efficiency
(3)What advantage does the writer say managers have over workers?
A. They won't be out of work.
B. They get time off to learn constantly.
C. They can work at what interests them.
D. They have complete control over themselves.【答案】(1)A
(2)B
(3)C
【解析】【分析】本文是一篇议论文,工作是人们生活的中心和主导,工作也给人们带来很多的问题。

When Shakespeare was twenty-one, he went to London, a very interesting place, to try his fortune.
There was the famous London Bridge and St. Paul's Cathedral, and palaces and markets and long streets full of shops.
Then, too, there were the daily crowds where could be seen people from all over the world. Knights, scholars and the highwayman (拦路强盗)or thieves, who had been infamous for their clever robberies, passed by each other.
Here, also, were noblemen dressed in gold, from Italy and Spain and France; slaves from Spanish America, sea captains and ministers, soldiers and servants—all held by chances or interests within the gray walls which circled London, and whose gates gave welcome to as strange a crowd as could be found in the world.
Into this curious crowd came Shakespeare, quick to see and eager to learn. And before long all these strange sights were as familiar to him as the faces of his own town's residents. Each one told its story to him so plainly that, as before he had learned the secrets of the fields and woods, so now he learned men and men's interests that make up the great world.
And he learned these lessons so well that when he came to write his plays, he made such use of them as no writer ever made before or since; for it is the use of this knowledge of the world, combined with his own genius, that makes Shakespeare the greatest dramatist that has ever lived.

A. Shakespeare got inspiration to write from his hometown, London.
B. Shakespeare was eager to make friends with the noblemen in London.
C. Shakespeare was good at observing and learning from the daily life.
D. Shakespeare became the greatest dramatist owing to his own genius.
(3)What does the word "one" in paragraph 5 refer to?
A. Crowd.
B. Resident.
C. Face.
D. Sight.
(4)The passage probably comes from______.

7.阅读理解
A few years back I worked in a university building that also housed a department full of psychologists, all of whom seemed to see us as perfect guinea pigs(豚鼠) for their latest theories. If an eager graduate student showed up in my office bearing desserts and asked me to pick one, I'd cast a careful glance and ask "Why?" before grabbing the apple pie.
So one day, when someone from the Psychology Department posted instructions in the bathroom persuading all of us to "Think about five things for which you're grateful every day for a week!" my response was frankly doubtful. I did the math. Five things a day for seven days is a lot
of brainpower to expend without so much as the promise of an apple pie.
I wandered into the office of Heidi Zetzer, the director of our school's Psychological Services Clinic. "What's with the gratitude thing?" I asked. You don't ask an academic question-even a simple one unless you're prepared for a long answer. Heidi came alive, and I sat down. That's when I first heard the term "positive psychology". The gratitude thing, as I had called it, was but one small and simple element of the practice. "Kind of like training the brain to focus on joy," my friend Heidi explained. "It's only a week," she urged. "Try it." I did. And guess what? It worked. Every day for a week, I found five distinct things for which I was thankful. They had to be different every day. I couldn't get away with just being grateful for my wonderful husband. But I could, suggested Collie Conoley, another positive psychologist, express my gratitude for specific aspects of a certain person each day. He's a great cook. He always puts our family first.
Life will never be perfect. I still see new stories that annoy me. The traffic in my city is maddening. I wish I could speed up my recovery. But with just one simple exercise, I'm rediscovering the peace of that old saying: accepting the things I can't change, working without complaint to change what I can, and being wise enough to know the difference.
And all it took was a little gratitude.
(1)What's the author's attitude toward the student with desserts?
A. Cautious.
B. Respectful.
C. Indifferent.
D. Supportive.(2)Why was the author doubtful about the instructions?
A. Because she thought it wasn't worth the effort.
B. Because she didn't like expressing thanks often.
C. Because she needed to ask her friend to do it first.
D. Because she could do five things every day easily.
(3)What does Collie Conoley suggest the author should do?
A. Be grateful to her wonderful husband.
B. Be thankful for things but not people.
C. Be a great cook and put her family first.
D. Be specific about what she's thankful for.
(4)What's the best title for the text?
A. Don't Be Bothered by Small Things
B. We Can Change Everything If We Want
C. Practicing Gratitude Changed My Life
D. Being Grateful to One Good Person
【答案】(1)A
(2)A
(3)D
(4)C

Inside Yellowstone, you can choose to stay in modern or historic hotels and cabins inside the park like the Old Faithful Inn, the world's largest log structure. For those who want to be a little closer to nature, there are 12 campgrounds with a range of services from primitive pit toilets to
shower and laundry facilities. There's also RV camping with and without dumping stations.
Staying outside the park gives you unique Old West experiences but still keeps you close to park attractions.
