A scientist warned yesterday of the fire danger in a type of foam(泡沫) materials widely used for furniture (家具).
He said that within two minutes of a chair-catching fire there would be flames 15 feet high. It would take only another minute to envelop (wrap up) the whole room.
Mr. Kenneth Jones, the scientific officer of the North-Eastern Forensic(法庭的) Science Laboratory told an inquest(调查小组) at Wakefield, Yorkshire, “The spread of fire mixing this materials is very fast, and choking smokes are giving off.”
He warned that it was a waste of time to try to put out this type of flame. The best thing was to get out of the room and shut the door to prevent from dying of the choking smokes.
An accidental death was recorded on Richard Jolley, of Wakefield, who died in his bedroom from the choking smokes.
Mr. Jones said that in a house where a four-year-old boy died there was a three-piece bedroom set with this foam filling. He said, “Some half million tons a year are produced for 500 million armchairs.”

The Nobel prizes are among the most important and internationally recognized prizes in the world. The prizes are given to honor great discoveries or special achievements by individuals or institutions. The fields in which the prizes are awarded are physics, chemistry, medicine or physiology (the study of living things), literature, world peace and economics.
The prizes were first given out in 1901 (except the economics prize, which began only in 1969) and since then they have been presented almost every year. The winners received a large sum of money, a medal and a certificate. They are admired and respected around the world for their hard work and the achievements they have made.
The prizes were created by a Swedish chemist called Alfred Nobel. Nobel was born in 1833, in Sweden. However, he was educated in Russia and the USA. Nobel devoted much of his life to his father’s b usiness, working with explosives. In 1864, his younger brother and several other people were killed in an explosion in a factory. After the terrible shock of his brother’s death, Nobel was determined to discover a way of making explosives safer to handle and use. He believed in the importance of his work, and he worked hard. In 1867, his hard work paid off, and he invented “dynamite”, a safer form of explosive.
Dynamite made Nobel very rich. When he died in 1896, he left around 9 million dollars. In his will, Nobel said that he wanted this money to be used to pay for annual prizes to be given to people who had done the most good for mankind each year. He also said that the nationality of the winners did not matter. The prizes were to be given to the people or institutions who had achieved the most regardless of which country they were from.

Speakers of different languages not only describe the world differently but think about it differently too, according to a new study.
Researchers used a cartoon cat Sylvester to study how language was reflected in the gestures people made. Dr. Sotaro Kita of the University of Bristol’s Department of Experimental Psychology(心理学)showed the cartoon to a group of native English, Japanese and Turkish speakers and then watched their gestures as they described the actions they had seen. He found speakers of the three different languages used different gestures to describe the same event, which appeared to reflect the way the structure of their languages expressed that event. For example, when describing a scene where the cat swings on a rope, the English speakers used gestures showing an arc trajectory(弧形轨迹) and the Japanese and Turkish speakers tended to use straight gestures showing the motion but not the arc.
Dr. Kita suggests this is because Japanese and Turkish have no proper verb to express the English meaning “to swing”. While English speakers use the arc gesture as their language can readily express the change of location and the arc-shaped trajectory, Japanese and Turkish speakers cannot as easily express the idea of movement with an arc trajectory so they used the straight gesture.
Dr. Kita said, “My research suggests that speakers of different languages cause different spatial (空间的) images of the same event in a way that matches the expressive possibilities of their own languages.”In other words, language influences spatial thinking at the moment of speaking.
44. Researchers watched the gestures the people made because they wanted to know _______.
A. how the structure of language changed
B. how language was reflected
C. whether they could express the same idea
D. whether they could describe what they had seen
45. Dr. Kita made a conclusion that _______, after watching the gestures of speakers of the three
different languages: English, Japanese and Turkish.
A. English was obviously better than Japanese and Turkish
B. Japanese and Turkish peo ple could not express the meaning of “swing”
C. every language had its own special way to describe things
D. no word in Japanese and Turkish could express some ideas of English
46. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. How people use different gestures to express the same event.
B. Language influences the way people think.
C. Differences between languages.
D. Differences between gestures.
47. What is the most probable meaning of the underlined word “readily” (in

The bus driver and his passengers were being hailed (拥戴) as heroes last night after rescuing a woman from her burning car following a crash on the Bluff Highway. The 60-year-old woman was taken by ambulance to Southland Hospital after firefighters battled for 30 minutes to cut her from her car.
Acting Senior Sergeant Brock Davis, of Invercargill, said emergency services were called to the scene of the crash at the crossroads of Motorimu Rd and State Highway

However, he said his actions were “no big deal”. He was not willing to take any credit for helping the woman.
“The praise goes to all the guys that jumped off that bus.” Invercargill Senior Station officer Alan Goldsworthy, who was an officer in charge at the scene, said there was a possibility the car could have burst into flames if Mr. McDermott and the smelter workers had not helped. “They should acquire a good pat on the back,” he said.

Dear sir,
I’m writing to request a valuable chance to be one of the host families for the British students. We have a large and clean house, which lies in a beautiful area of the city. I’m good at English and my parents are both professors of English. So I’m sure we won’t have any difficulty communicating with English speakers. My father is an excellent driver and we will be very glad to show foreign students around some nearby places of interest in our town by car. Last month we received two American students, and we had a great time. Besides, my mother cooks well, so the students will be able to enjoy delicious Chinese food. I would greatly appreciate it if I could have the chance to make friends with them.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua。
