Service Hours:

Borrowing:
Each student can borrow one or two books at a time. More books can be borrowed only for class reading activities and school research.

Damaged (受损的)or Lost Books:
When a book is returned in a damaged condition, the kid will have to pay three dollars for the damage. Full price must be paid if a book is lost. We encourage your kids to carry their library books in plastic bags to protect them from rainy weather.

A new bus in Singapore is making headlines(新闻热点)for a strange reason. The signs inside the bus are written in Singlish! Quite different from the English we are familiar with, the signs read, for example, “Here cannot go in from here”, and“Here can charge(给……充电)phone” instead of “You can charge your phone here”.
English is one of the official languages in Singapore. But the English that Singaporeans use in their daily life is far from standard English and earns it the name “Singlish”. In Singapore, migrants (移民)from many countries, including China, India and Malaysia, all speak their own version(s版本)of “English”. The New York Times calls Singlish a “patchwork(拼凑品)”.
For example, in Singlish you can easily find influences(影响)from Chinese. Singaporeans use Chinese sentence structures like “Toilet where?” instead of “Where is the toilet?” They also add words like “leh” and “meh” at the end of a sentence. This comes from Cantonese.
Though it may seem interesting, Singlish is worrying Singapore’s government. It thinks that Singlish may hurt people’s ability to speak standard English and make hard for them to communicate with foreigners. The government even started the Speak Good English Movement in 2000.
But the movement didn’t seem to work very well, especially among young people. The youth think Singlish is cool and a way to show they are Singaporeans. Besides, many can speak both standard English and Singlish.

You’ve probably heard the phrases “go outside and get some fresh air” before. Breathing fresh air can make us feel more energetic. However, not everyone in the world has the chance to enjoy it.
According to a new study from the World Health Organization (WHO), nine out of every 10 people on the planet breathe polluted air.
Polluted air can get deep inside your lungs(肺)when you breathe, causing diseases like lung cancer(肺癌)and heart disease, CNN reported. Around 7 million people die every year from breathing polluted air.
More than 90 percent of these deaths happen in low-and middle-income countries, mainly in Asia and Africa. Among the world’s 20 most polluted cities, 14 are in India.
Some of the biggest sources of air pollution include factories and vehicles(交通工具). In
some regions sand and desert dust, as well as the burning of waste, also cause air pollution.
Another large source of air pollution can be found in some people’s homes. More than 40 percent of the world’s population is still using woodstoves(木柴炉)or opening fires to make meals and heat their homes. This creates harmful particles(颗粒)and gasses(气体)indoors, WHO says.
Although this problem is serious, the good news is that countries are taking action to fight it. India has provided 37 million poor women with free liquified petroleum gas(液化石油气), while Mexico City has created cleaner vehicle standards, the Guardian reported.
Maria Neira, WHO’s head of public health, said China has set a good examp le to the world in improving air quality. “There is a big step at the government level declaring war(宣战)on air pollution,” she said.
42.How many people on the earth breathe polluted air?
A. About 90%.
B. About 80%.
C. About 70%.
D. About 60%.
43.What does the underlined phrase “low-and middle-income countries” mean?
A. Rich countries.
B. European countries.
C. Developed countries.
D. Developing countries.
44.Who has set a good example to the world in improving air quality?
A. India.
B. Mexico.
C. China.
D. WHO.
45.Which of the following is NOT true?
A.About 7,000,000 people die every year because of polluted air.
B.The main source of air pollution can be found in some people’s homes.
C.Polluted air can cause lung cancer and heart disease.
D.Some countries are taking action to fight the air pollution.

Money is what people use to buy things they need or want. A long time ago, people didn’t use money. So how did they get the things they 51 (想要)?Well, there is a long and interesting story about this.
At first, they would exchange something they had for something they needed. For 52 (例如), if the shoemaker needed some bread, he would give the baker shoes and the baker would give him bread. This was called “bartering(以货易货)”.
Bartering worked fine for a while. But after the baker had too many shoes, the shoemaker still needed more bread. What could they do? The solution to this 53 (问题)was money.
Money is basically an agreement 54 (在……中)people. People agree that some metal or paper will be worth a certain amount of bread or a certain number of shoes.
There were many earlier 55 (形式)of money, such as cattle, salt, grain(谷物)and shells. But it was not easy to move them or store them.
So coins began to 56 (取代)things. Metal tool money(金属工具钱币)was used in China as early as 1000 BC.
Coins had a set value and could be stored. It became 57 (可能的)for people to trade in a standardized(标准的)way.
A coin says how much it is worth. Different coins are worth different amounts.

At last the dentist 69 (pull) the cotton-wool out of my mouth, and I was able to tell him 70 he had pulled out the wrong tooth.
六、任务型阅读(共5 小题,每小题1 分,共5 分)
阅读下面材料,完成信息记录表。
People who buy property(房产)or move into a new apartment or house usually hold a housewarming party(乔迁派对).The party is an opportunity for friends and family to congratulate (祝贺)this person on their new home. It is a tradition(传统)to bring a gift to a housewarming party. Decorations(装饰品)for the new house, such as pieces of art or potted plants(盆栽植物), are good housewarming gifts. You can also bring food or drinks to share with the other guests. The host or hostess of the party will give all the guests a tour of their new home. Sometimes, because housewarming parties usually happen shortly after a person moves into their new home, guests may be asked to help unpack boxes. This isn’t common, though.
A long time ago, people would bring firewood(木柴;柴火)to their friends’ new homes as a gift. This is where the name “housewarming” comes from. This allowed their friends to keep their homes warm for the winter. These days, most homes have central heating, so firewood isn’t needed.

独白读两遍。
Hi, I’m Louis and I live in a small community in Roseville, California. I have positive and wonderful relationships with my neighbors. But this didn’t just happen naturally. There are three things you can do to develop good relationships with your neighbors.
First, make sure to keep your yard beautiful and clean. For example, you can grow some flowers
and clean up your trash. If you have dogs, clean up after them, too.
Secondly, if you’re going to have different activities in the evening with friends and family,
make sure that you end things at a reasonable time. No neighbor wants to hear your loud
music at 2
o’clock in the morning.
And finally, take the time to greet them. Say hello and offer cookies to your neighbors from
time to time. Things like that really improve relationships and help you have a positive
experience in your neighborhood.

七、书面表达(20 分)
Possible version one:
Travelling with parents
If I have the chance to go travelling, I would like to travel with my parents.
Don’t you think it’s safer for us to travel with our parents? With the help of our parents,
we will not get lost. Our items won’t be stolen and we won’t be robbed by others, either.
Besides, parents can look after us well, especially when we fall ill or get injured. What’s
more, we could spend more time with our family. The better we get on with family, the more
we love each other. The last but not the least, parents could relax themselves by travelling as
well.
For the reasons above, I’d like to travel with my parents. I think travelling will be
more wonderful with my parents.
Possible version two:
Travelling with friends
If I have the chance to go travelling, I would like to travel with my friends.
First, I don’t think there are so many chances for us teenagers to go travelling with friends.
The journey will be more interesting with friends, because we usually have the same hobbies
and interests. Second, we are free to choose the places of interest that we all like. Third, we
have to look after ourselves when we are on the way. So it’s good t o develop our independence.
Learning to be independence will help us when we go to the senior high school. What’s more, it’s not easy for us to see each other after graduating. We should cherish the chance and time
we get together.
For the reasons above, I’d like to travel with my friends. Who will you go travelling?
