Created in 2022, the cafe was a response to the need in the community for programs that would enable youth with special needs to develop social and professional skills in a safe environment. The cafe was the idea of Pennsylvania mom Maureen Stanko, a teacher, fitness instructor, and musician, who was concerned about her son Nick, who has autism (孤独症) and food allergies, and what he would be able to do after graduation. In Pennsylvania, students with disabilities can stay in school until age 22, but worrying about Nick’s future is what keeps Stanko up at night.Stanko was so worried that she spoke to Nick’s therapist, Tyler Kammerle, who had dreamed about opening a restaurant to employ people with disabilities. The two worked together to make this a reality. Two years later, the So Much To Give Inclusive Cafe was born. It employed 63 people and 80 percent of them have some form of disability. The cafe is more than just a space to work; it’s also a place for people with disabilities and their families to dine. “We’d never even taken Nick to a restaurant before because we wouldn’t spend all this money to eat out to be completely stressed out,” Stanko said. “This cafe has taught Nick how to sit in a restaurant. And now we have a place to go, where if he stands up and starts hopping or clapping, nobody cares.”The inclusive cafe has made a real difference in people’s lives. One of the staff, Lauren Oppelts, who is hearing impaired, said, “If you told me two years ago that I would be a server, I wouldn’t believe you. But now I have gained so much self-confidence. A lot of employees here have changed so much; it’s just mind-blowing.”4.Why did Stanko and Tyler Kammerle establish the cafe?A.To serve people with various abilities.B.To provide a place for family occasions.C.To instruct graduates in professional skills.D.To offer employment to youth with special needs.5.What was Stanko’s concern about taking Nick to a restaurant?A.The cost of dining out.B.The noisy customers in restaurants.C.The lack of an inclusive environment.D.The food allergies Nick is suffering from.6.How has working at the cafe affected Lauren Oppelts?A.She has taken to socializing.B.She has grown more positive.C.She has become experienced in cooking.D.She has recovered from her hearing disability.7.Which of the following best describes Stanko?A.Caring and responsible.B.Ambitious and devoted.C.Determined and sensitive.D.Tough and reliable. An artificial intelligence (AI) tool of street view could be used to predict the risk of coronary heart disease — a condition where the heart’s arteries (动脉) are blocked, limiting blood flow to the heart by analysing neighbourhood environments, according to research.A study, published in the European Heart Journal, monitored everyday surroundings, including the quality of roads, buildings, and green spaces, and the role they play in determining heart health. Researchers were able to track the link between these environmental elements, including the presence or absence of pollution, and the risk of coronary heart disease. They found that these neighbourhood characteristics could account for 63% of the differences in heart disease risk from one community to another. The discovery stems from analysing more than half a million AI street view images across US cities, using computer vision to identify and interpret details that might go unnoticed by the human eye. The data provides urban planners and public health officials with information to design healthier living spaces and neighbourhoods.“Undoubtedly, there is a vast amount of social, economic and environmental data set,” said one of the study's authors, Prof Sanjay Rajagopalan. “However, there still remain significant gap s in our knowledge regarding unique environmental aspects of data that are currently beyond human comprehension. This is where the use of computer vision approaches may enable uniqueunderstanding of the physical and built environment.”By employing AI, researchers have been able to examine the details of neighbourhoods’ environment. The study employed computer vision technology, including applications used in medical imaging and autonomous driving, to identify details and then interpret them to make predictions or decisions.“We are getting to a place in human civilization where traditional approaches that have been used are rather limited and the use of AI to enhance human understanding is going to be critically important at solving complex problems,” Prof Rajagopalan said.8.What is the finding of the study?A.How people can prevent heart diseases.B.How environments affect heart health.C.How AI can reduce heart disease risks.D.How the heart's arteries are blocked. 9.What can the finding of the study help to do?A.Promote computer technology.B.Reduce air and water pollution.C.Design green neighbourhoods.D.Advertise for an AI company.10.Why was computer vision used in the study?A.The researchers had no environmental data.B.It had solved some environmentalproblems.C.People ignored the environment they live in.D.It helped people understand theenvironment.11.Which of the following is the best title for the text?A.The development of AI for hospitals B.The medical use of a street view toolC.The insight into healthy neighbourhoods D.The link between the heart and environmentForests have been embraced as a natural climate solution, due to their ability to soak up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as they grow, locking it up in their trunks, branches, leaves, and roots. But a new study confirms widespread doubts about the potential for most forests in the Western US to help control climate change.Published in Earth’s Future, the paper analyzed trends in carbon storage across the American West from 2005 to 2019. Led by Jazlynn Hall, a forest and landscape ecologist at Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, the team found that throughout most of the region, climate changeand fires may be causing forests to store less carbon, not more.“There’s a growing trend to use forests as natural climate solutions,” said Hall. “Many climate mitigation (减轻) pathways rely in part on additional forest carbon storage to keep warming below 1.5℃ this century. We wanted to provide a baseline for how much carbon is currently stored in Western forests, how it’s changing, and how disturbances like fire and drought pose a threat to climate mitigation targets.”The authors warn that many Western forests could see a rapid acceleration of carbon loss in the coming years or decades. “These challenges have the potential to compromise carbon storage capacity and weaken our ability to mitigate climate change, Hah cautions.By providing a fire-new view of threats at landscape and regional levels, Hall and colleagues provide a framework (框架) that could help forest managers adapt site-specific strategies to strengthen forest resilience (复原力). They also identify the remaining areas with the lowest risk and highest potential to store carbon, such as the Pacific Northwest.“Our study develops new methods to carefully estimate forest-carbon storage at a regional level, track it over time, and find out the causes of changes over time,” said Hall. He expects the methods will be useful in monitoring carbon storage levels going forward, as well as assessing the carbon impacts of management efforts such as forest thinning and planned burning.12.What does the underlined phrase “soak up” in paragraph 1 mean?A.Put down.B.Take in.C.Bring up.D.Give out. 13.Why was the study conducted?A.To find the best forests for carbon storage.B.To promote forests’ carbon storage capacity.C.To assess the current situation of forests.D.To measure the carbon released into forests. 14.What can we say about the future trend of Western forests?A.Carbon loss will speed up.B.They will become more resilient.C.They will store more carbon.D.They will have no impact on climate. 15.What is the primary function of Hall’s framework for forest management?A.Predicting future forest growth rates.B.Identifying high- risk areas for protection.C.Mapping all the forests in the Western US.D.Helping managers adapt strategies to forests.I am often struck by the thought that there is this huge life enhancing potential available to everyone on the planet that maybe we don’t always take great advantage of. 16 Through it, we help ourselves and others by sharing the things we have learned.17 I have been teaching and preaching from the time when it occurred to me that I had some really great stuff to share. But, strangely, it took me a long time to really identify what it was that I was doing, at least enough to put it into words. So, I’d like to share with you my thoughts on why teaching and sharing your knowledge can be so important to you as well as to the people around you. 18 See whether it profoundly enhanced so many parts of your life, even in the areas you’re already super successful in.Here is what makes teaching so great for the person doing the teaching. Any goal, habit, human quality, or desire that you start preaching, teaching, or pontificating about will automatically, and almost without effort, push you to do more of it yourself. 19 It pushes you to do what you are encouraging and teaching others to do. I am totally convinced this will, and does, work that way for everyone. What knowledge do you have, or have you learned that you want to be reminded and pushed to improve in your life? If you want to do better at it, there will be plenty of others that will want to do better at it too. 20A.It’s our ability to teach other people.B.We just need to talk and teach others about it.C.Doing this has been changing and helping my life for years now.D.Please, think deeply about this and then put it into practice in any way you can.E.Be sure to write down your goals and objectives as well so you can stay on track.F.The knowledge you share, whether spoken or written, is like a truth drug for the mind. G.So, why not teach and share what you know and help yourself do better and better at these things?二、完形填空Five years ago, Anna Lee, a cultural worker from Washington, D.C., bought a vase for $3.99 at a thrifty shop.

He was holding down two jobs at the time — one with the city’s public works department, the other as a barber. Saturday was his busiest hair-cutting day, but he chose to donate his time and give free haircuts to unfortunate kids so they’d look neat on that first day of classes. But then he had a light bulb moment: “The kids should earn their free haircut by having to read a book to me,” Holmes said. The idea was so popular that he continued it the first Tuesday of every month for the next two years. Boys from five to ten years old would grab a favorite book, settle into the barber chair, and read aloud while Holmes was doing their hair. If they were puzzled over a word, Holmes was there to help. After the haircut, they’d review he book, from the characters and vocabulary to the themes — just like in school, only more fun. Holmes, who is married and has two sons, ages three and four, recognizes that not every parent has the time to read with their kids.Holmes admits he, too, benefits from the process. “There was this seven-year-old who struggled through his book, stuttering over words even though he didn’t have a stutter (口吃),” said Holmes. He had the boy take the book home and practice. When the child came back a few days later, “He read it with no problems. That inspires me.”Holmes and his family have recently moved to a Chicago suburb. When they get settled, he plans to take up his role as the Story-book Barber. “The way the world is today with guns and violence,” he says, “it’s a safe heaven for the kids, to come to the barbershop and read books.”4.What do we know about Holmes two years ago?A.He had only one job.B.He earned a lot as a barber.C.He offered free haircuts to the poor kids.D.He was the organizer of Back to School Bash.5.The example in Paragrap3 mainly proves that _______.A.Holmes is very strict with the kidsB.Holmes also learns a lot from the kidsC.being a fluent reader needs plenty of practiceD.many kids have trouble in reading a storybook6.What can we learn from the last Paragraph?A.Holmes is dissatisfied with the world today.B.Holmes’ barbershop will have some changes.C.Holmes’ barbershop has won great popularity.D.Holmes will continue to be a storybook barber.7.What is the best title for the text?A.The Storybook BarberB.Back to School BashC.Reading Counts A LotD.Care About the KidsAny schoolchild knows that a whale breathes through its blowhole. Fewer know that a blowhole is a nostril (鼻孔) slightly changed by evolution into a form more useful for a mammal that spends its life at sea. And only a dedicated expert would know that while toothed whales, such as sperm whales, have one hole, baleen (鲸须) whales, such as humpback and Rice whales, have two.Even among the baleen whales, the placing of those nostrils differs. In some species they are close together. In others, they are much further apart. In a paper published in Biology Letters Conor Ryan, a marine biologist at the Scottish Association for Marine Science, suggests why that might be. Having two nostrils, he argues, helps whales smell in stereo (立体空间).Many types of baleen whales eat tiny animals known as zooplankton (浮游动物), whichthey catch by filtering (过滤) them from seawater using the sheets of fibrous baleen that have replaced teeth in their mouths. But to eat something you first have to find it. Toothed whales do not hunt by scent. In fact, the olfactory bulb—the part of the brain that processes smell—is absent in such creatures. But baleen whales still have olfactory bulbs, which suggests smell remains important. And scent can indeed give zooplankton away. Zooplankton like to eat other tiny creatures called phytoplankton When these are under attack, they release a special gas called dimethyl sulphide, which in turn attracts baleen whales. Most animals have stereoscopic senses. Having two eyes, for instance, allows an animal to compare the images from each in order to perceive depth. Having two ears lets them locate the direction from which a sound is coming. Dr Ryan theorized that paired blowholes might bring baleen whales the same sorts of benefits. The farther apart the sensory organs are, the more information can be extracted by the animal that bears them. The researchers used drones to photograph the nostrils of 143 whales belonging to 14 different species. Sure enough, baleen whales that often eat zooplankton, such as the North Atlantic right whale, have nostrils that are farther apart than do those, such as humpback whales, that eat zooplankton occasionally. Besides allowing them to breathe, it seems that some whales use their blowholes to determine in which direction dinner lies.8.What do we know about whales’ nostrils according to the first two paragraphs?A.They are adapted ones.B.They are developed merely for smell.C.They are not easy to detect.D.They are fixed universally in numbers. 9.What plays a role when baleen whales hunt zooplankton?A.The teeth that baleen whales have.B.The smell that phytoplankton send.C.The sound waves that zooplankton create.D.The chemical signals that zooplankton give off.10.How is the concept of stereoscopic senses explained in paragraph 4?A.By quoting a theory.B.By using examples.C.By making contrast.D.By making inferences.11.What is the position of nostrils related to according to the last paragraph?A.The sense of smell.B.The possibility to attract food.C.The ability to locate food.D.The ability to communicate. In a world where everyone has their own opinions on just about everything, it’s common for people to be critical of each other’s mistakes and imperfections without noticing their own. Some individuals mistakenly think it’s their responsibility to make you into a better person. They do this by first pointing out your shortcomings directly and then providing advice on how you can improve. So what is the possible solution to criticism? If you are the one forcing others to feel ashamed of themselves, please stop. Make a conscious decision rather than highlight the negative aspect of a person’s performance or attitudes. You are more likely to offer helpful suggestions from the beginning. If you are on the receiving end of criticism, the “OK” response is a perfect solution. When someone comments negatively on a task you are doing or a personality issue of yours, a natural response is to defend and attack. However, this approach is rarely effective as it puts both parties on the defensive. Instead, simply reply with “OK”. This brief one-word response acknowledges the other person’s comment without agreeing with it or feeling necessary to engage in a debate about it.It’s crucial to stay connected to what the other person is talking about, and listen without getting upset, to be an objective observer. In fact, there is much that one can learn from a negative review. You can ask yourself: Did I make a mistake? Could I have done better? Did I give 100% of myself to the task at hand? If so, how can I improve myself? As for chronic criticizers: It is important to set strict boundary with them. Remove yourself from their presence when necessary. In any case, one can learn to be “OK” with criticism and not allow it to negatively impact your life or relationship with the other party.12.What might the author think of people who like to judge others?A.Self-centered.B.Responsible.C.Talkative.D.Warm-hearted. 13.What does a person mean by saying “OK” according to Paragraph 3?A.He thinks the advice is helpful.B.He completely agrees with the comments.C.He wants to avoid unnecessary arguments.D.He defends himself with the response. 14.What is the recommended action for dealing with chronic criticizers?A.Embrace their views.B.Criticize them in return.C.Avoid interaction if needed.D.Engage with them regularly.15.What is the most suitable title for the text?A.The Art of Giving Criticism B.Mastering Self-Defense against Criticism C.Dealing with Personal Relationships Flexibly D.The Path to Self-Improvement through CriticismLessons that are Learned from the OlympicsThe Olympic Games are enjoyed by everyone.

Late one evening, Jayasree, who had recently been diagnosed (诊断) with Alzheimer’s, got up in her nightdress and went to make tea at her home in India. After she returned to her bedroom, Chadalavada went into the kitchen to find that his grandmother had left the gas on!Chadalavada decided to invent a wearable device to help people like his grandmother. Now aged 17, Chadalavada is ready to start making the Alpha Monitor. The device, which can be worn as an armband, sets off an alarm when the wearer with Alzheimer’s starts to move and warns a caregiver if the patient falls or wanders off. Most similar devices run on Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, so when a person moves out of their frequencies’ limited range the connection is lost and with it the monitoring. But the Alpha Monitor can detect a person more than a mile away in cities and three miles in the countryside thanks to the long-range technology, known as LoRa, it uses.Teaching himself with YouTube videos about robotics and electronics, Chadalavada has developed several prototypes (模型). To understand the needs of people with Alzheimer’s, he spent time in a day centre run by the Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Society of India. There, the cofounder told him that the device “had to be something light that can be worn on any part of the body”. She says: “Many patients don’t like having to wear a watch and they take it off.”In March, when Chadalavada’s school exams are over, he will put the finishing touches to the monitor, with the aim of getting the device ready for market by September. He is confident that it should be sold at an affordable price for most people.Chadalavada hopes to study robotics at a university abroad. His aim is simple: “I want to create products to help people in India for the whole world.”4.Why did Chadalavada invent the Alpha Monitor?A.To treat Alzheimer’s.B.To entertain senior citizens.C.To improve Alzheimer’s caregiving.D.To ensure fire safety at the elderly’s homes.5.What is an advantage of the Alpha Monitor?A.It is more comfortable to wear.B.It has a longer service time.C.It offers a remoter monitoring.D.It uses higher frequency controls.6.What did Chadalavada want to explore while he spent time in a day centre?A.Where his invention could be polished.B.What people with Alzheimer’s felt like.C.How Alzheimer’s disease could be cured.D.Whether his invention would be profitable.7.What can we learn about Chadalavada from the text?A.He enjoys living simply.B.He has an innovative mind.C.He used to be a health worker.D.He longs to be a robotics professor. The impact of technology on language is a topic that often causes concern, with many assuming that it is simply ruining it. However, language experts resist such pessimism, noting that there is little evidence to support the view that speech is getting worse. Gretchen McCulloch, in her book Because Internet, focuses on what can be learned about language from the internet rather than talking about its supposed negative effects.McCulloch compares studying language online to growing bacteria (细菌) in a Petri dish, where trends emerge and disappear quickly, allowing language experts to observe changes that would otherwise take a considerable amount of time. The influence of strong ties like friends or family vs weaker ties on language change is analyzed, with computer simulations (模拟) revealing that having both strong and weaker ties helps spread updates in a community. The role of social media platforms in language change is also discussed. Twitter, with its mix of strong and weak ties, is shown to drive more language change than Facebook, which is controlled by stronger ties. Emoji is highlighted as a universal digital expression of gestures, not a language. Additionally, there is evidence that the use of internet“innovations”such as“omg”datesback to pre-computer eras.McCulloch’s book focuses on the birth of a new medium rather than a new language. The rise of mass writing on the internet, characterized by frequent, error-filled, and short-lived communication, challenges traditional ideas about writing’s importance. McCulloch suggests future historians should see this as a return to more casual (随意的) language, paying more attention to the value of tools that improve social interaction online. The book argues against the idea that these changes might lead to the end of “real” writing, advocating for an appreciation of anything that enhances human connection and the enjoyment of each other’s company.8.How might McCulloch sound in her book Because Internet?A.Sensitive.B.Scientific.C.Pessimistic.D.Dismissive. 9.What does paragraph 3 focus on?A.The development of digital language.B.The difference between social media platforms.C.The influence of the internet on language change.D.The connection between humans and the internet.10.Which of the following would McCulloch probably agree with?A.Interpersonal bonds play a role in online communication.B.Formal language is unlikely to improve social interaction.C.The birth of new media has removed writing’s importance.D.Mass writing can make web-based conversations effective.11.What would be the best title for the text?A.How to Achieve Network Effect?B.Technology, Fear or Convenience?C.What If Faced with Media Terms?D.Internet Degrades or Helps Speech?Bottled water has long been marketed as a safe drink—if it doesn’t come straight from a mountain spring, it’s at least clean and free of chemicals. But a new study demonstrates that bottled water may not be so safe when it comes to microscopic plastic pollutants capable of passing into the bloodstream. For years scientists have raised the alarm over microplastics, which form when plastics break down into increasingly smaller particles (微粒), ranging from five millimeters down to onemicrometer. Previous studies have found that a liter of bottled water can contain tens of thousands of identifiable plastic particles. But they stopped at the one micrometer level due to technological restrictions. The study used a new technology to find even smaller particles, and detected an average240,000 plastic particles per liter of bottled water. About 90% of the particles were considered nanoplastics, smaller than one micrometer. Unlike microplastics, they are capable of passing through some organs like lungs into the bloodstream. From there they can stay in the heart muscle and other organs, pass into the brain, and even into the bodies of unborn babies. So far, little research shows what nanoplastics exactly do once they enter the bloodstream. But there is much evidence that chemicals used in plastic production are bad for human health. Even if nanoplastics themselves are not deleterious, they can serve as carriers for the dangerous chemicals, increasing the risk of cancer and impacting key organs such as the heart.“There is a huge world of nanoplastics to be studied,” said the researchers. Even if nanoplastics make up 90% of the number of plastic particles found in bottled water, they make up far less in mass, they said. However, this fact provides little comfort: It’s the numbers rather than mass that matter; and the smaller things are, the more readily they can get inside us.12.What does the technological barrier in the previous studies concern?A.The number of microscopic plastics.B.The quality of water bottles.C.The distribution of plastic pollutants.D.The size of plastic particles.13.What does the text imply about microplastics?A.They are not very likely to pollute bottled water.B.Their number per liter of bottled water is constant.C.They are less potentially risky to health than nanoplastics.D.Their number in springs is larger than that of nanoplastics.14.What does the underlined word “deleterious” in paragraph 4 probably mean?A.Large.B.Useless.C.Safe.D.Harmful. 15.Why do nanoplastics need further research?A.They are too small to identify.B.They have easy access to organs.C.They are dangerous regarding mass.D.They have a higher percentage in life. Why are Police Officers Called Cops?Police officers are often referred to as cops. 16 Some argue the term is shortened from “copper” and comes from copper badges (徽章) worn by a policeman. Others say that it stands for “Constabulary of Police”.General agreement on the word origins of “cop”, however, suggests that the term is based more on the policeman’s job than on his clothing or job title. In Latin, the verb capere can be defined as “to capture.” In French, the verb is caper. “To cop” in English is to seize or to take.17Some also believe that the Dutch word kapen, which also loosely translates to “to steal or take”, is related to policemen being called coppers or cops. Essentially, the police force was there to take criminals off the streets. 18 And since American English especially draws from German, French, and Latin, the specific language origin of kapen or capere creates a ready path to the term “cop”.19 And it is no longer considered rude. However, certain other terms for police officers are definitely unwelcome. While British Police might not mind being called “bobbies”, no police members like to be referred to as “pigs” or the “fuzz”. Some don’t mind the term the “heat” as applied to the whole police force, but the police force does not generally take kindly to terms given to them by criminals. The term “cop” is in such common usage now that a show documenting their work on the job is called Cops. Even though J. Edgar Hoover once highly objected to the term, it is now fine to refer to a policeman or a police woman as a cop. 20A.The term is slightly less familiar to people.B.So, the Latin, Dutch, and French terms are all similar.C.These words define some of what a police officer does.D.The profession of a police officer was not respected then.E.But the origins of this nickname are something of a debate.F.However, the term “police officer” is generally most correct.G.Today it is appropriate to call members of the police force cops. As soon as the words left my mouth, I knew I'd made a mistake. “You think Jane Austen is...21 ?” the man opposite me asked in disbelief. We would just sit and talk — sometimes until sunrise. I was so completely thrilled to have finally found that one special person. However, it was not long after our honeymoon when my husband climbed into the tomb called “the office” and wrapped his mind in a shroud of paperwork and buried himself in clients, and I said nothing for fear of turning into a nagging wife. It seemed as if overnight an invisible wall had been put up between us. He just lay beside snoring like a hibernating bear unaware of my winter. When our daughter was born, she quickly became the center of my world. I watched her grow from infant to toddler, and I no longer seemed to care that my husband was getting busier and spending less time at home. Somewhere between his work schedule and our home and young daughter, we were losing touch with each other. That invisible wall was now being hardened by the mortar (砂浆) of indifference. Then tragedy struck our lives, when my husband’s younger brother was killed on September 11, 2001, along with thousands of other innocent people. He made it out okay and spoke to his wife to say he was going back in to help those that were still trapped. He was identified only by the engraving on the inside of his wedding ring.Attending our brother’s memorial service was an eye-opening experience for both of us. For the first time, we saw our own marriage was almost like my in-laws. At the tragic death of the youngest son they could not reach out console one another. It seemed as if somewhere between the oldest son’s first tooth and the youngest son’s graduation they had lost each other. Their wedding day photograph of the young, happy, smiling couple on the mantle of their fireplace was almost mocking those two minds that no longer touched.Later one night, my husband told of his fear of dying. Until then he had been afraid to expose his naked souls. I spoke of trying to find myself in the writings of my journal. It seemed as if each of us had been hiding our soul-searching from the other. We are slowly working toward building a bridge — not a wall, so that when we reach out to each other, we do not find a barrier we cannot penetrate or retreat from the stranger on the other side.4.From the second paragraph, we can learn that the author’s husband _________.A.didn’t show any affection for her B.was fully occupied with his workC.preferred his work to his family D.got tired of his nagging wife5.What does the underlined word in Paragraph 5 refer to?A.The author’s husband’s parents.B.The author’s husband’s brothers-in-law.C.The author’s husband’s brothers.D.The author’s husband’s sisters-in-law. 6.What can be inferred from the passage about the couple?A.Their brother’s death triggered their reflection on marriage.B.Attending the memorial service worsened their relationship.C.The fear of dying prevented the husband from reaching out.D.Communication was a most effective means to break the barrier.7.Which of the following best describes the author?A.Sympathetic and emotional.B.Hardworking and ambitious.C.Sensitive and sensible.D.Independent and critical. Many of the major supermarket chains have come under fire with accusations of various immoral acts over the past decade. They’ve wasted tons of food and they’ve contributed to excessive plastic waste in their packaging, which has had its impact on our environment. But supermarkets and grocers are starting to sit up and take notice. In response to growing consumer opposition to the huge amounts of plastic waste generated by plastic packaging, some of the largest UK supermarkets have signed up to an agreement promising to transform packaging and cut plastic wastage. In a pledge to reuse and recycle all plastic wastage by 2025, supermarkets are now beginning to take some responsibility for the part they play in contributing to the damage to our environment, with one major supermarket announcing their plan to eliminate all plastic packaging in their own-brand products by 2024.In response to criticisms over food waste, some supermarkets are donating some of their food surplus. However, charities estimate that they are only accessing two per cent of supermarkets’ total food surplus, so this hardly seems to be solving the problem. Most supermarkets operate under a veil of secrecy when asked for exact figures of food wastage, and without more transparency it is hard to come up with a systematic approach to avoiding waste and to redistributing surplus food. Some smaller companies are now taking matters into their own hands and offering consumers a greener option. Shops like Berli’s Original Unverpakt and London’s Bulk Market are plastic-free shops, encouraging customers to use their own containers or degradable bags. Online grocer Farmdrop eliminates the need for large warehouses and the risk of huge food surplus by delivering fresh produce from local farmers to its customers on a daily basis via electric cars, offering farmers the lion’s share of the retail price. There is no doubt that we still have a long way to go in reducing food waste and plastic waste. But perhaps the major supermarkets might take inspiration from these smaller grocers and gradually move towards a more sustainable future for us all.8.Some of major UK supermarkets promise to reduce plastic waste, because _________.A.they want to take the responsibility for environmental damage caused by othersB.they promised to eliminate all plastic packaging in their own-brand products by 2024C.an increasing number of people want supermarkets to reduce plastic waste they produceD.the policy issued by the authority serves as supervision to decrease plastic waste 9.What does the author imply in the third paragraph?A.Supermarkets are still denying that food waste can cause damage to our environment.B.Supermarkets are making every effort to take measures to cut down on food waste.C.Charities are to blame as they only obtain limited access to supermarkets’ total food surplus.D.Supermarkets are unlikely to avoid waste unless they disclose the exact figures of food wastage.10.What do the underlined words “take matters into their own hands” mean?A.Take the risk of completing difficult tasks.B.Deal with problems yourself after others fail to do so.C.Take the initiative to address problems.D.Settle problems in collaboration with others.11.What is author’s attitude towards the major supermarkets’ current action?A.Unsatisfied B.Indifferent C.Favorable D.UncertainImagine accessing traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) services with just a tap on your smartphone. What once required a hospital visit — often leading to long waits and considerable inconveniences, especially for the elderly — is now available at your fingertips. The innovative mini-program “Wang She Wen Shan” (Tongue Diagnosis and Dietary Guidance) is transforming TCM consultations. Users can now receive a detailed health report in under two minutes simply by taking a quick snapshot of their tongue. More than that, this AI-powered tool also provides personalized dietary and wellness recommendations.According to the mini-program’s developers, this transformation has been made possible through the seamless integration of the traditional TCM tongue diagnosis method with cutting-edge AI image recognition technology. The program has been trained on over 20,000 clinical tongue images, enabling it to provide accurate and convenient health assessments.Since July 2023, Guangzhou has been at the forefront of piloting TCM services with AI assistance. A research team from the South China University of Technology developed an AI-powered TCM Constitution Identification Device based on machine learning models. Trained by TCM doctors from local hospitals, this device has “learned” to identify users’ constitution typesthrough facial and tongue images and provide personalized health recommendations. By October 2023, this smart device had been adopted in 11 communities across Guangzhou, serving over 12,000 residents. In addition, other AI-driven innovations, such as prescription systems, pulse signal acquisition systems, acupuncture robots, and massage robots, are making their way into public use, bringing a high-tech touch to traditional medicine.Despite the progress made, the integration of AI into TCM is still in its early stages. One of the primary hurdles is the lack of theoretical standardization within TCM. For the same illness, different schools and experts may recommend varying treatment plans.Another challenge lies in the integration of medical and engineering technologies. Although computer applications in TCM date back to the 1980s, early systems relied on pre-programmed standards that often fell short due to the complex nature of patient symptoms. The unpredictability and variability of these symptoms pose significant difficulties for AI’s deep learning processes.Anyway, there is every reason to believe that the integration of AI into TCM will profoundly revolutionize healthcare by making TCM more accessible and efficient. It holds significant promise for underserved areas with limited medical resources. Nevertheless, as the journey is only beginning, it is crucial to acknowledge its current limitations in clinical settings. While AI offers substantial potential for TCM, accurate diagnosis still relies heavily on the expertise of physicians. AI is intended to complement — not replace — human doctors. 12.What do we know about “Wang She Wen Shan”?A.It provides invariable dietary and wellness suggestions for users.B.It requires users to take a photo of their tongue for consultation.C.It has been trained on abundant tongue images of medical staff.D.It fails to function properly without facial recognition technology.13.What’s the main idea of the fourth paragraph?A.A glimpse of the development of AI-driven TCM innovations.B.An introduction to an AI-powered device developed by doctors.C.An insight into the potential use of AI-driven devices in TCM.D.A comparison between different AI-powered TCM innovations14.Who might benefit most from the mini-program?A.Folks in places with few experienced doctors.B.Patients with symptoms rarely seen or reported.C.Physicians with great diagnostic capabilities.D.Senior citizens with difficulty using smart phones.15.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.AI: The Future of TCM B.Doctors at Your FingertipsC.Modernized TCM with AI D.Integration of AI into MedicinePeople who experience loneliness may assume that they are unlovable, which may cause profound shame and injure self-esteem. 16 We all feel lonely at times just like we all feel hunger or thirst. There is no reason to be ashamed of being human. Here are a few ways to work through the shame and find or reestablish connections.Develop your relationships. You can be surrounded by people and still feel lonely if what you want or expect from your relationships is different from what you perceive. 17 A few minutes of honest, authentic human connection can transform how we feel. If you’re accustomed to texting friends or relatives, try a phone or video call instead. It doesn’t need to last long, but it may rekindle a friendship and lift your mood.Look for commonalities. We each have unique ways of finding friends, initiating communication and maintaining our relationships. “If you’re a bookworm, don’t expect your next best buddy at a party.” said Louise Hawkley, a research scientist who studies loneliness. “ 18 ”19 V olunteering is a way to broaden your social networks. In a study of 10,000 volunteers in Britain, about two-thirds agreed that volunteering had helped them feel less isolated. Some organizations can help you find opportunities in your area.Taking a small step toward building social connections can help your confidence. If you’re finding it difficult to initiate contact with someone or you’re feeling socially isolated, don’t hesitate to tell someone that you’re struggling. 20 “Lonely people have more control over the situation than they think they do if you reach out.” Hawkley said.A.People are not necessarily to be struck by someone like them.B.Effort and honesty are crucial to strengthening those connections.C.Don’t abandon yourself to loneliness.D.You have to look for people who share your interests and values.E.But the truth is loneliness is a universal human experience.F.Offer support to someone else.G.It could be a relative, a friend, a therapist or a health care provider. After moving into her new home, the mistress hadn’t finished tidying up yet.

Instead, they will remain at the International Space Station (ISS) for the rest of the year and will return in February aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft.Nasa ultimately decided it was too risky to return Williams and Wilmore on the Starliner. So the capsule contains their empty seats and blue spacesuits along with some old station equipment. After Nasa’s space shuttles were retired more than a decade ago, Nasa hired Boeing and SpaceX for orbital (轨道的) taxi service. Boeing ran into so many problems on its first test flight with no one onboard in 2019 that it had to repeat it. The 2022 do-over uncovered even more flaws and the repair bill topped $1.5bn.The Starliner finally blasted into space on 5 June from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Space Force Station after unsuccessful launches on 6 May and 1 June. On the first launch attempt,a problem was found with a valve (阀门) on the second stage,or upper portion, of the rocket. On the second,a computer tripped an automatic hold just three minutes and 50 seconds from liftoff. Thatwas later attributed to a single ground power supply fault within one of the launch control computers.Even after it successfully launched, helium leaks continued to trouble the spacecraft. As the Starliner approached the ISS, two leaks were detected but Nasa determined the spacecraft remained stable. What started as an eight-day mission dragged on for three months after the leaks and faulty thrusters raised safety concerns. However, Nasa and Boeing officials insisted that the astronauts were not trapped and that the technical difficulties did not threaten the mission. “We’ll come home when we’re ready,” Steve Stich, Nasa’s commercial crew program manager, said in the press conference in July.4.What does the underlined word “marred” in paragraph 2 mean?A.Underwent.B.Stimulated.C.Facilitated.D.Blocked.5.What do we know about Boeing’s spacecraft launches?A.They were filled with delays and setbacks.B.Starliner’s initial launch went smoothly.C.The 2019 manned spaceflight was a failure D.Reasons of the problems were still unidentified.6.Why didn’t the two astronauts come back to Earth on time?A.Because the project went over the original budget.B.Because they were both in serious health conditions.C.Because it was dangerous to take the Starliner then.D.Because Nasa officials failed to reach an agreement.7.What can be implied according to the last two paragraphs?A.The two astronauts would come back soon.B.Officials considered the situation within control.C.Nasa officials were pessimistic and pressed.D.The mission would be completed in 3 months.Actor Alicia Silverstone worried fans on social media recently. While on a trip to England, she posted a TikTok video of herself tasting a kind of poisonous berries she found along a sidewalk. Silverstone, who appeared in the 1995 movie Clueless, said she thought the fruit was atomato. But when she bit into it and found that it had an unusual taste, she realized that it was not the common food.Plant expert, Jessica Damiano, recently wrote about poisonous plants that look like common foods for the Associated Press. She said the fruit that looked like a tomato appears to have been a Jerusalem cherry.Often sold as a houseplant, all parts of the Jerusalem cherry are poisonous. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says the plant is not only harmful to humans but also to dogs, cats and horses.Eating large amounts can be deadly. Silverstone was lucky because she did not swallow the berries. She was also lucky because the berries were reddish orange, which meant they were ripe. While all parts of the Jerusalem cherry are poisonous, the plant’s unripe berries can be especially dangerous. They can cause problems with the central nervous and gastrointestinal (肠胃的) systems. The Jerusalem cherry is not the only toxic plant that looks like a safe one.The poisonous Carolina horsenettle fruit also looks like a tomato. It is also known as devil’s potato to add to the confusion. The Virginia creeper fruit also looks like blueberries, and it can be deadly if eaten.Wild parsnip has flowers like a carrot and leaves like parsley (欧芹). Simply touching it can cause a skin problem. Creeping buttercup looks like flat-leaf parsley. It can cause severe stomach pain, vomiting (呕吐) and heart problems. And Canadian moonseed can be confused with wild grape. However, its taste is so bitter that you would likely spit it out before swallowing it. This is a good thing because eating it can lead to death. If you think you have swallowed a toxic plant by mistake, contact a poison control center in your area or your doctor immediately. There is additional information on the website .Damiano advises using common sense with plants you find in the wild. If you are not completely sure that something is food, do not eat it.8.What is the purpose of the first paragraph?A.To present the author’s argument.B.To introduce the topic of the article.C.To raise the public’s attention of wild plants.D.To popularize the knowledge of medical science.9.Why was Silverstone thought to be fortunate?A.The berries she had a bite were ripe.B.She found the fruit she ate was a tomato.C.She had a good knowledge of wild plants.D.The amount of the berries she consumed was large.10.According to the description, what plants can be most harmful to people?A.Carolina horsenettle and wild parsnip.B.Virginia creeper and creeping buttercup.C.Wild parsnip and Canadian moonseed.D.Canadian moonseed and Virginia creeper.11.What may be the suitable measure if someone mistakenly swallows a poisonous plant?A.Spitting it out as quickly as possible.B.Making an appointment with their doctor.C.Getting in touch with the local authority instantly.D.Searching for the relevant information on the Internet.Superhuman artificial intelligence has played a role in our life. When it comes to playing games like chess, or solving difficult scientific challenges like predicting protein structures, computers are well ahead of humans. But we have one superpower they aren’t close to mastering: mind reading. We are blessed with a mysterious ability to reason the goals, desires and beliefs of others, a crucial skill that means we can anticipate other people’s actions and the consequences of our own. If AIs are to become truly useful in everyday life — to cooperate effectively with us or to understand that a child might run into the road after a bouncing ball — we have to give them this gift that evolution has given us to read other people's minds. In psychology, the ability to infer another’s mental state is referred to as theory of mind. In humans, this capacity develops at a very young age. How to reproduce the capability in machines is far from clear, though. One of the main challenges is context. For instance, if someone asks whether you are going for a run and you reply “it’s raining”, they can quickly conclude the answer is no. But this requires huge amounts of background knowledge about running, weather and human preferences.Besides, whether humans or AI, the theory of mind is supposed to emerge naturally from one’s own learning process. Building prior knowledge into AI makes it reliant on our imperfect understanding of theory of mind. In addition, AI may be capable of developing approaches we could never imagine. There can be many forms of theory of mind that we don’t know about simply because we live in a human body that has certain types of senses and a certain ability to think. But we might still want AI to have a more human-like form of theory of mind. Humans can clearly explain their goals to each other using common language and ideas. While letting AI form the theory of mind in their learning process is likely to lead to developing more powerful AI, plainly building in shared ways to represent knowledge may be crucial for humans to trust and communicate with AI.It is important to remember, though, that the pursuit of machines with theory of mind is about more than just building more useful robots. It is also a stepping stone on the path towards a deeper goal for AI and robotics research: building truly self-aware machines. Whether we will ever get there remains to be seen. But along the way thinking about other people and other agents, we are on the path to learning to think about ourselves.12.According to the passage, which of the following contexts can AI understand well?A.When asked where an object is, a naughty kid points in the wrong direction.B.When a teacher asks for a boy’s homework, he answers “my dog ate it” .C.When you are treated with a hotpot for dinner, you reply “a sore throat” .D.When a mom tells her kid milk is good for health, the kid drinks it up.13.Which statement will the author agree with most about theory of mind?A.Humans’ theory of mind is far from perfect.B.Humans limit AI’s theory of mind to an extent.C.AI’s theory of mind development has been totally decoded.D.Shared forms of theory of mind result in more powerful AI.14.What is the author’s attitude toward truly self-aware machines?A.Ambiguous B.Conservative.C.Skeptical.D.Approving.15.Which would be the best title for the passage?A.AI’s Theory of Mind Will Define Our FutureB.AI with Its Own Theory of Mind Is ExpectedC.AI’s Theory of Mind — a Blessing or Suffering to HumansD.Theory of Mind Bridges the Gap Between Humans and AIEnsuring that your home is as energy-efficient as it can possibly be is essential. Take the steps listed below, and you'll be living in an energy-efficient home in no time.16 To stop it in its tracks, you must invest in having your house insulated (隔热的). Taking such action may demand some cost in advance, but it will be sure to save you over f100 a year when it comes to your energy bills. The old boilers (锅炉) are not as energy-efficient as the very latest models in this field.17 By investing in a top of the line boiler, you'll no doubt tap into a number of savings. What's more, making this kind of investment will also be sure to lower your home's carbon emissions.Only when you know how much energy you use can you take action to be less wasteful and more resourceful in this instance. 18 To assist you in taking on this extremely important challenge, you might want to consider fitting an energy monitor in your home. 19 But if you're lucky, your electricity provider will give you one for free. This monitor will provide you and your family with constant updates on the amount of energy you are using on a day-to-day basis. With just a few years to go until climate change alters earth forever, now is the time for you to play your part in protecting the planet that you live in. 20A.Generally, this type of device will cost between f25 and f40.B.It means you should try to keep track of energy consumption.C.The investment demanded in this case is of great significance.D.By putting the above advice into practice, you'll be green soon.E.Taking such action will help you adjust to climate change better.F.Most of your home's wasted energy will escape through your roof.G.It might be high time to update yours if you haven't done so for years二、完形填空Not long into my career in journalism,I realized I was in need of some slow, 21 adventure. The kind of fun that required little planning, zero stress and a lot of time.

La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Bunol close to Valencia in Spain. It is claimed to be the biggest food fight in the world. What Happens at La TomatinaAt around 11 am, many trucks carry more than one hundred tons of over- ripe tomatoes into the centre of the town, Plaza del Pueblo. Technically the festival does not begin until one brave soul has climbed to the top of a two-story-high wooden pole and reached the ham at the top. In practice this process takes a long time and the festival starts despite no one reaching the prize. The signal for the beginning of the fight is the firing of a water gun. After one hour the fighting ends and the cleaning process begins. The Rules of La TomatinaDo not bring bottles or hard objects as they can cause accidents and hurt other participants;Do not tear other people’s T-shirts;You must squeeze (捏碎) the tomatoes before throwing them;As soon as you hear the second shot of the water gun, you must stop throwing tomatoes.Useful AdviceWear old shoes and clothes that you do not mind throwing away afterwards. They will most likely end up damaged or incredibly dirty;Don’t wear slippers. You may get hurt, or you could lose them easily during the battle; If you are not from Bunol, and you want to stay overnight, don’t forget to look for and secure accommodation in advance.Stay safe and enjoy the festivities as much as possible!1.What can we learn about La Tomatina?A.It is an annual event.B.It takes place in Valencia.C.It lasts for a whole day.D.It hands out hams as prizes.2.Which of the following signals the beginning of the fight in practice?A.The arrival of the tomatoes.B.The takedown of the ham.C.The firing of a water gun.D.The set up of the wooden pole.3.What should participants avoid doing during the fight?A.Touching each other.B.Taking soft objects with them.C.Wearing shoes and T- shirts.D.Throwing unsqueezed tomatoes. This is my fourth mission to space, my second to the International Space Station (ISS), and I’ve been here for three weeks now. I’m getting better at knowing where I am when I first wake up.My bedroom is just big enough for me and my sleeping bag, two laptops, some clothes, photos of my wife and daughters, a few books. Getting dressed is a little bit difficult when I can’t “sit” or “stand”, but I’ve gotten used to it. The most challenging thing is putting on my socks. It’s not a challenge to figure out what to wear, since I wear the same thing every day. However, without gravity to help me bend over, it is very difficult to pull my legs up to my chest. At present, we have three Americans living at the station: Samantha, Terry and me. Samantha is one of the few women to have served as a fighter pilot in the Italian Air Force, and she is competent in everything technical. She is also friendly and quick to laugh. She is especially gifted for language. She has native-level fluency in English and Russian (the two official languages of the ISS) as well as French, German, and her native Italian. She is also working on learning Chinese. For some people who hope to fly in space, language can be a challenge. We all have to be able to speak a second language (I’ve been studying Russian for years), but the European and Japanese astronauts have the added burden of learning two languages if they don’t already speak English or Russian.Terry was a test pilot before joining NASA.He has all the positive qualities of a leader — optimism, enthusiasm, friendliness — and none of the negative ones. I’ve found him to be consistently competent, and I appreciate that as a leader he is a consensus builder rather than a bossy commander. Since I’ve been up here, he has always been respectful of my previous experience, always open to suggestions about how to do things better rather than getting defensive or competitive.4.Why does the author find it challenging to put on his socks at the ISS?A.He has too many choices.B.It is uneasy to pull his legs up.C.The bedroom is too small.D.He can’t find a chair to sit on. 5.Samantha has left the deepest impression on the author probably because of her _______.A.good humor B.technical skillsC.language talent D.loud laughing6.What can be inferred from paragraph 4?A.Speaking English or Russian is a must for the ISS astronauts.B.All the ISS astronauts have to be able to speak three languages.C.European and Japanese astronauts are not good at communication.D.There are language workshops on the International Space Station.7.Which of the following can best describe Terry?A.He is competitive and defensive.B.He is a perfect leader.C.He is the most experienced man at the ISS.D.He is just a little bit bossy. On September 9, 2024, Apple released its latest iPhone 16 series at an event called “It’s Glowtime”. At the event, Tim Cook, the company’s CEO, played up the promise of the phones’ AI features in a pre-recorded video.Indeed, the demonstration seemed impressive. When Cook pointed the camera at a restaurant, the AI assistant Siri could tell him what was on the menu. It also could answer his questions fairly well and learn about the users from their interactions with their devices. For instance, Siri could know if a user’s mother was calling and acted appropriately.Apple is one of many firms that want to take AI beyond huge data centres, known as the cloud, and run it on smaller devices, known as the edge. Samsung, Apple’s major competitor, launched its Galaxy S24 with some AI features earlier this year. So did Microsoft, which has launched Windows PCs designed for AI. But their efforts have shown that it is not easy to shift cloud-based AI models to the edge devices. At present, cloud-based AI models are mostly trained on graphics processing units (GPUs) that consume so much energy that it can take a nuclear-power plant to fuel them. They also need huge amounts of memory and data. All these can cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Even once they are trained, running these AI models is costly. According to one estimate, it costs OpenAI, themaker of ChatGPT, 36 cents every time someone asks its AI model a question.Companies are experimenting with various solutions to these problems. Apple will offer on-device AI to deal with the easiest tasks, but send trickier problems to the firm’s private cloud. The service will direct the most difficult requests to third-party models such as ChatGPT. But even such smaller on-device AI models require a lot of computing power to run, which puts huge stress on the edge devices’ batteries.“Making the technology work could not only start a supercycle in device sales, but also create new opportunities for apps and digital advertising,” says Neil Shah of Counterpoint, a research firm. “But for the moment, edge devices are barely ready for basic functions, let alone Glowtime.”8.What is the second paragraph mainly about?A.The Glowtime event.B.iPhone 16’s AI features.C.Tim Cook’s performance.D.The future of AI phones.9.Why are Samsung and Microsoft mentioned in the text?A.To tell readers how bad competition can be.B.To warn Apple of the potential consequences.C.To compare their newly released edge devices.D.To show how hard it is to apply AI to edge devices.10.What is the problem with cloud-based AI models?A.OpenAI charges too much money.B.All of them have to be trained on GPUs.C.It is too expensive to train and run them.D.They can only deal with the easiest tasks.11.What does Neil Shah most probably imply?A.iPhone 16 is bound to disappoint its users.B.AI phones’ success will depend on new apps.C.Sales of AI phones will increase greatly soon.D.Tim Cook was not honest with the AI features. The Greek philosopher Heraclitus taught that you can’t step into the same river twice, foryou aren’t the same person at each visit, and the water is ever flowing. It is a powerful way to represent the reality that everything is always changing.Yet so many of us have difficulty adapting to change. We deny it, resist it or attempt to control it, the result of which is almost always some combination of stress, anxiety and burnout. It doesn’t have to be that way. No doubt, change can, and often does, hurt. But with the right mind- set, it can also be a force for growth. It’s not as if we have any choice in the matter. Like it or not, life is change. We’d be wise to shift our position from useless resistance to being in conversation with change instead.A concept called allostasis can help. Developed in the late 1980s by Peter Sterling and Joseph Eyer, allostasis is defined as “stability through change”. In other words, the way to stay stable through the process of change is by changing, at least to some extent. From neuroscience to pain science and psychology, allostasis has become the standard model for understanding change in the scientific community. The brain is at its best when it is constantly making new connections. Overcoming pain, be it physical or psychological, is not about resistance (which often worsens the experience) or trying to get back to where you were before a distressing event or situation. It’s about balancing acceptance with problem-solving and moving forward to a new normal.Yet this concept is still little known to ordinary people and it is time to start practicing it now. Over the past few years, the river of change has been flowing mercilessly, and it shows no signs of letting up. Hardly a decade after the widespread adoption of social media, a new technology that may be far more powerful, artificial intelligence, is being widely used. It’s like what our friend Heraclitus advised: Take part in change by focusing on what we can control and trying to let go of what we can’t. Our ability to work with these changes is directly related to our life satisfaction.12.What phenomenon is described in the first paragraph?A.We could have a right mind- set.B.Philosophy exists everywhere.C.Some people are wiser than others.D.Change is unavoidable in life.13.How should we deal with changes according to the author?A.Ignore them.B.Participate in them.C.Fight against them.D.Put them under control.14.What does the underlined phrase “letting up” in paragraph 6 probably mean?A.Slowing down.B.Setting off.C.Marching on.D.Pulling in. 15.What is the best title for the text?A.Why Can’t We Adapt to Changes in Life?B.How Can We Increase Our Life Satisfaction?C.Let’s Transform Our Relationship With ChangeD.Try to Help the Public to Understand AllostasisHere’s the bad news: misunderstanding about masculinity(男子汉气概)is hurting males and making it hard for them to maintain friendships. 16 . They listen to each other. They read each other’s emotions. However, they tend to hide their true feelings in their late teenage because society expects them to be tough. 17 .Don’t blame yourself. You are a product of a society that expects very particular things of masculinity. So stop blaming yourself. 18 . If you accept your own desire for close relationship in your life, you will find the friendship.Get involved at tough moments. Boys sometimes are worried whether they might appear too curious about their friends’ private matters. 19 . But if you get involved at such moments, you will open the door to all kinds of growth in your relationship. So take the opportunity to show them that they matter by following up.20 . Researchers say that the No.1 thing that helps children(especially boys)grow up to have enriching friendships is to be close with adult relatives who are not afraid to express their emotions. So, if you have expressive grownup relatives, try to be close to them. They can serve as role models for you to show your true feelings in a better way.A.Look at masculinity criticallyB.So here is what they should doC.Get close to expressive adults in your lifeD.You need to face something really disturbingE.Instead, focus on undoing hurtful and restricting belief systemsF.It is especially true when their friends are sharing something toughG.The good news is that boys are born caring and loving, just as girls do二、完形填空Children are not often invited to address the United Nations General Assembly But there stood Felix Finkbeiner, with a(n) 21 question about climate change.“We children know that adults are 22 the climate challenges and that they have the solutions,” he said. “But we don’t understand why there is so little 23 .”Before his speech, Finkbeiner had been 24 a remarkable environmental campaign for four years and it has since 25 into a global network of children working to 26 the earth’s warming by reforesting the planet. Most of them are between the ages 9 and 12.The reforesting effort could be traced to a fourth grade school 27 in Finkbeiner’s hometown. The topic was climate change. In his report, Finkbeiner 28 to plant one million trees in Germany. The UK is an incredibly diverse destination for travelers. Here’s our pick of some splendid places to visit in the country. Grasmere, Lake DistrictEngland’s Lake District has such a breadth of beautiful landscapes that visiting just one doesn’t do it justice. Grasmere is perhaps one of the best places to start. Grasmere houses great hotels as well as an award-winning small bookshop, which is for stocking up on maps and mountain literature. Grasmere’s Dove Cottage was home to poet William Wordsworth. Cairngorms National Park, ScotlandScotland’s Cairngorms is arguably the last truly wild place remaining in the UK. In winter, these hills sit beneath meters of wind-swept snow. In summer, the long days and warm sun make it the perfect place for hiking and camping. Adventurers will go hiking into the hills, while those who want to be quieter should go to Loch an Eilein, a ruined castle located on its central island where you can enjoy the scenery on postcards and see red squirrels (松鼠) up close. Hadrian’s Wall, NorthumberlandThe one-time northern frontier of the Roman Empire, Hadrian’s Wall is arguably the greatest historical site in a country blessed with castles and ruins. Stretching from one side of England to the other, its central section is the most arresting, the wall rising and falling across steep hills. Those with more time can follow the 135-kilometer national path, taking in the wall from Newcastle to the Solway Firth. Glens of Antrim, Northern IrelandThe nine Glens of Antrim extend down from the Antrim Plateau to the Irish Sea. You can hire a car and follow the winding coast road, built in the 1830s, which covers over 160 kilometers, with views of the hills. The Glens of Antrim has a starring role in a TV series, meaning this part of Northern Ireland has attracted a flood of tourists in recent years.1.What can visitors do at Grasmere?A.Visit Newcastle’s wall.B.Attend the local book fair.C.Explore Wordsworth’s life.D.Observe red squirrels at close range. 2.Which has been made famous through exposure in a TV series?A.Grasmere.B.Cairngorms National Park.C.Hadrian’s Wall.D.Glens of Antrim.3.Who is the text most likely intended for?A.Beach-goers.B.Castle-admirers.C.Literature-explorers.D.Travel-lovers.Virginia “Ginger” Hislop, now 105, recently received her master’s degree from Stanford University, 83 years after completing her master ‘ s in education in Stanford in 1941. Originally Hislop desired to be a lawyer, but her father rejected paying law school tuition (学费) because he didn’t support women lawyers. Therefore, Teaching was the next best choice for Hislop with the help of her grandmother and aunt. She enrolled at Stanford in 1936, earning her bachelor’s (学士) degree in education four years later. It’s worth noting that even if she had received her degree, many school systems wouldn’t have hired her as a married woman. Not until the 1964 Civil Rights Act were these “marriage bars” that allowed for schools to not hire wives, and even fire teachers who got married after hiring, completely done away with. Gender (性别) inequality may have put a hold on her career, but they led to her becoming a powerful advocate for all students.Hislop worked to improve educational opportunities for all students, believing everyone should have access to higher education if they desired. Her efforts contributed to transforming Yakima Valley College from a junior college to an independent institution awarding associates, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees. This was achieved through her work with local and state legislators and the Community College Act of 1967. Hislop also served on boards of various education and arts-focused organizations.“I didn’t return to teaching, but I feel I put my teaching certificate to good use serving in committees and on boards and trying to improve educational opportunities every chance I got,” Hislop says. At 105, Hislop remains an active community member. Her son-in-law Doug Jensen notes, “The biggest lesson I’ve taken from her is that you never really stop learning. She’s a reader with a strong thirst for knowledge, and at 105 she’s still energetically moving and shaking.”4.What made Hislop choose teaching?A.Financial difficulties of her family.B.Family responsibilities.C.Her interest in education.D.Her father’s refusal of tuition.5.What can we know about the society when Hislop was young?A.Women faced many limits on career.B.Lawyer was the best job choice.C.Education was open to everyone.D.Men and women had equal chances. 6.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?A.Hislop’s political ambitions.B.Hislop’s plan to build educational equality.C.Hislop’s desire to change education policies.D.Hislop’s efforts and contribution in education.7.Which of the following can best describe Hislop?A.Determined and devoted.B.Energetic and humorous.C.Wise but indecisive.D.Courageous but impatient.Several companies in different fields are hurrying to develop cool and dry face masks to help people in the upcoming unbearable summer heat in Japan. For instance, a sports marketing company in late May started sales of face masks made with a soft stretch material that is used for its swimsuits and wear for track and field athletics. By using the material, the repeatedly washable mask can fit the face with less stress and help prevent splash infections (感染). The mask has two pockets to hold four refrigerant (冷却的) packs and can cool the user’s face for one to two hours. The new mask sells for 1,300 yen, including tax, in vending machines and online sales are also available. The mask can be used repeatedly if cooled in a freezer. These innovative approaches by various companies highlight the diverse strategies being employed to combat the intense summer heat while ensuring safety and comfort for the users. 8.What is the purpose of this text?A.To warn people to wear face masks.B.To introduce some face masks fit for summer.C.To find some materials suitable for face masks.D.To refer to some famous companies in Asia.9.What’s the unique feature of the masks made by the sports marketing company?A.Absorbing heat.B.Breathable and fast-drying.C.Washable and with less stress on the face.D.Cool the user’s face for one hour. 10.What does the underlined word “debut” in paragraph 4 mean?A.The first public appearance,B.The research of the material.C.The convenience of the material.D.The lowest price.11.Which company’s masks are the most costly?A.The sports marketing company.B.The company selling equipment forbadmintonC.The fast retailing company.D.The company selling various knit products. The China National Space Administration (CNSA) has successfully collected rock and soil samples from the far side of the moon, which will offer scientists an opportunity to study the lesser-understood lunar face unseen from Earth. The samples entered Earth’s atmosphere on Tuesday and landed in northern China. They were secured in a re-entry capsule (太空舱) from a larger spacecraft, called Chang’e-6. The entire mission lasted nearly two months and marked a milestone for lunar research. “Chang’e-6 is the first mission in human history to return samples from the far side of the moon,” Long Xiao, a planetary geologist, tells the media. “This is a major event for scientists worldwide.”Launched on May 3, the Chang’e-6 spacecraft consisted of four modules: an ascender (上升器), an orbiter, a lunar lander and a return capsule. It reached lunar orbit five days later, where it remained for several weeks. On June 1, the lander successfully descended and touched down on the far side of the moon in the South Pole Aitken Basin. Directing the movement of a spacecraft on the far side of the moon is difficult, because the moon blocks radio signals from Earth. To solve this problem, CNSA engineers used two relay satellites, Queqiao and Queqiao-2, launched ahead of this mission, to communicate with the spacecraft.Once on the moon, Chang’e-6 used a robotic arm to collect 4.4 pounds of lunar material. “Collecting samples from the far side is exciting, as we only have very limited information on the geology there,” says Martin Barstow, an astrophysicist at the University of Leicester in England. The collection of rocks launched from the lunar surface in the spacecraft’s ascender on June 3, then united with the orbiter later. It began its earth-bound journey on June 21, and will get to China this week.Scientists hope the lunar soil will offer evidence of the history of the moon, which could also explain that of the Earth. Most lunar basins were formed from asteroid showers 3.9 billion years ago, which also hit the Earth and possibly carried water there.12.Which carried the lunar soil back to Earth?A.The orbiter.B.The lunar lander.C.The ascender.D.The return capsule. 13.How long did it take the Chang’e-6 to reach the moon?A.Nearly a month.B.About a week.C.20 days.D.11 days.14.What is the function of the relay satellites?A.To prevent the Chang’e-6 spacecraft being harmed.B.To repair the Chang’e-6 spacecraft in case of emergency.C.To provide better signals for the Chang’e-6 spacecraft.D.To better observe the flight of the Chang’e-6 spacecraft.15.Why is the soil from the far side of the moon important?A.It is the first time to collect lunar soil.B.It may help scientists know more about the moon.C.The soil is very rare on the moon.D.It is made up of at least 100 chemicalelements.Over the last year, grocery (食品杂货) prices have increased a bit. Mia Moncel, founder of a cooking program, gives tips on how to spend less money at the store. Do online research16 . “Just type each item into the search bar on your grocery store’s website,” Moncel says. “It will show you what they have available at that store, and you can compare them in the comfort of your home instead of waiting in line at the grocery store.”Don’t think bulk (大量) deals are betterIs it always cheaper to buy in bulk? “Not all the time,” says Moncel. 17 . For example, if you decide whether to buy that family size box of cookies, or just a regular box, look at the price per kilogram. If the regular box has a lower price per kilogram than the bulk pack, it’s a better deal. Replace pricey ingredients (原料) with cheap ones“Meat usually costs more than vegetables,” says Moncel. 18 For example, if a dish calls for a pound of beef, you could reduce the beef by half and then take less expensive ingredients like beans. That way, you’ll still get the taste of the beef without the cost. 19 “Before you head to the store, take your shopping list into the kitchen and carefully check whether you have those items. You might not realize you already have some of those things on hand,” says Moncel. Think outside the big-box grocery storeOrganic eggs, for example, are sometimes cheaper at farmer’s markets. So shop around. “Once you get to know the average prices at each of these stores, decide which one is the best to shop this week,” Moncel says. “ 20 .”A.Double-check your kitchenB.Store delicious foods at homeC.There are two options open to youD.She suggests paying attention to unit pricesE.But cutting back doesn’t mean going withoutF.It may take more time, but it can save your moneyG.Compare the prices of foods online before you go shopping二、完形填空When I was 17, my rowing coach declared that taking a day off a week was unnecessary.
