First thing that passed through my mind was that it must be a misunderstanding, such a look was not meant for me, but later I saw the old lady’s face changing every time she saw me, at least seven times, no more doubt that she was very angry with me.I was confused, shocked, and near anger, my brains were spinning, trying to figure out h ow’s and why’s but somehow managed to not show it on my face. Went home, slept a night over it and decided that I have to find a way to break the ice with this lady. The very next day I bought some nice chocolate praying to see her again and when I caught sight of her, went straight to her and apologized telling her “I am so very sorry if I angered you, I had no such intention, please accept my apologizes”, and handled her the chocolate. Surprised, she told me not to mind her, and apologized too. It was an awkward moment, but we made peace and the grimaces换成embarrassment is/ are replaced by smiles now.I am very grateful for this experience, it shows me I still have plenty of work to do with my mind, I learned how it is not easy to take knowledge of, accept and forgive acts that we may feel as unfair, and it taught me of possibilities about fixing a conflict. Best advice to keep for myself? Do not react, do not be quick to judge, sleep it over, and throw in a pinch of empathy for self as well as others.(304词)24. The underlined phrase “out of the blue” in paragraph 1 probably means __________.A. unexpectedlyB. curiously。

(606)668-6222COne day, when I was working as a psychologist in England , an adolescent boy showed up in my office. It was David. He kept walking up and down restlessly, his face pale, and his ha nds shaking slightly. His head teacher had referred him to me.“This boy has lost his family," he wrote. “He is understandabl y very sad and refuses to talk to others, and I’m very worried about him. Can you help?”I looked at David and showed him to a chair. How could I h elp him? There are problems psychology doesn’t have the an swer to, and which no words can describe. Sometimes the be st thing one can do is to listen openly and sympathetically. The first two times we met, David didn’t say a word. He sat there, only looking up to look at the children’s drawings on the wall behind me. l suggested we play a game of chess. He nodded. After that he played chess with me every Wednesda y afternoon——in complete silence and without looking at me. It’s not easy to cheat in chess, but I admit I made sure David won once or twi ce.Usually, he arrived earlier than agreed, took the chess board and pieces from the shelf and began setting them up bef ore I even got a chance to sit down. It seemed as if he enjoye d my company. But why did he never look at me?“Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with,”I thought. “Perhaps he senses that I respect his sufferin g.” So me months later, when we were playing chess, he looked up at me suddenly."It’s your turn," he said. After that day, David started talking. He got friends in schoo l and joined a bicycle club. He wrote to me a few times, about his biking with some friends, and about his plan to get into uni versity. Now he had really started to live his own life.Maybe I gave David something. But I also learned that one — without any words—can reach out to another person. All it takes is a hug, a should er to cry on, a friendly touch, and an ear that listens.8.When he first met the author, David___________.A.felt a little excited.B.walked energetically.C.looked a little nervous.D.showed up with his teacher.9.As a psychologist, the author_________.A.was ready to listen to David.B.was skeptical about psychology.C.was able to describe David’s problem.D.was sure of handling David’s problem.10.David enjoyed being with the author because he_________ _.A.wanted to ask the author for advice.B.needed to share sorrow with the author.C.liked the children's drawings in the office.D.beat the author many times in the chess game.11.What can be inferred about David?A.He recovered after months of treatment.B.He liked biking before he lost his family.C.He went into university soon after starting to talk.D.He got friends in school before he met the author.DTwo studies show that fatness and alcohol(酒精) act together to increase the risk of illness in both men and women. In the first study, researchers examined the connection b etween body mass index (BMI) and liver cirrhosis(肝硬化) in 1.2 million middle-aged women. Each woman was followed for 6.2 years.Compared to the women of a healthy weight, the women who were overweight had an increased risk of liver cirrhosis. And through the study we can see that alcohol is dangerous f or people’s health. For example, among the women who were reported drinki ng about a third to half a drink a day,0.8 in 1,000 would go to t he hospital with liver cirrhosis or would die from liver cirrhosis over five years if they were of healthy weight compared with 1 in 1,000 women who were overweight. However, among the women who were reported drinking two and a half drinks a da y ,2.7 in 1,000 would go to the hospital with liver cirrhosis or w ould succumb to liver cirrhosis over five years if they were of healthy weight compared with 5 in 1,000 women who were ov erweight. In the second study, researchers surveyed the influence of BMI and drinking on the body in more than 9,000 men. The y were followed for 29 years. Both BMI and drinking were connected with liver disease and, more importantly, if they worked together, the influence was greater than that of BMI or drinking alone. For example, o verweight men who were reported drinking 15 or more units p er week had the greatest risk of liver disease. Both studies show that, from a public health view, methods to reduce both excessive (过度的) drinking and excessive body weight should reduce the cha nce of liver disease.12.What did the researchers mainly focus on in the first study ?A.The connection between fatness and drinking.B.The influence of BMI and drinking on the body.C.The connection between BMI and liver cirrhosis.D.The reason why women are easy to get overweight.13.The underlined phrase “succumb to” in Paragraph 4 most probably means .A.stand forB.die ofC.get overD.change into14.It can be inferred from the passage that .A.improving body mass index is very difficult.B.the two studies arrived at different conclusions.C.it took researchers a long time to do the two studies.D.drinking alcohol leads to fatness in both men and women.15.Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?A.The Influence of Excessive Drinking on Our Health.B.The Connection Between Fatness and Liver Cirrhosis.C.The Normal Amount of Drinking Each Day for Adults.D.The Increase in the Risk of Illness Caused by Fatness and Alcohol.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Scientists present the methods that got the best result. They often show only the results that are significant and important. What they won’t show are the mistakes or failures that came first. Yet sometimes those mistakes pointed the way to success. It can take a long time and many experiments to achieve scientific success. Robbin, 16, and Annabelle, 15, learned that while working this summer in a biochemistry lab at Stony Brook University in New York. What’s more, they learned that failure is not necessarily something to fear.“I like the idea of scientific research,” says Robbin. It’s the basic for “every lesson you learn in school and understanding everything you see in life.” This summer, Robbin has been working with Lauren, a chemistry student, who is making new drugs to fight harmful bacteria. At first, the tests made Robbin anxious. She worried that she might be making costly mistakes. But Lauren reassured her that finding out what doesn’t work is “just part of the learning process”. With time, the teen got comfortable with the idea that every experiment wouldn’t succeed.Annabelle also learned a lot about failure and success. She worked with graduate student AgnieszkaGil. “Sometimes I try something and it takes a while for the experiment to run.” This means that finding out whether Annabelle did somethin g wrong can be a stressful waiting game, because “if you did something wrong you need to do it again.” But she’s now learning to be patient and not to expect instant success. In science, figuring out why something failed is what may just put them on the road to success.50. What impresses students most in articles about scientific discovery?A.Scientists’ achievements.B.The reasons for success.C.The cause of mistakes.D.Stressful process of research51.What does the underlined word “instant” mean?A.bigB.significantC.immediateD.long-time52.What did Robbin and Annabelle have in common in their experiments?A.They did their experiments independently.B.They realized not all experiments would succeed.C.They assisted graduate students to make new drugs.D.They made severe mistakes in the experiments.53.What does the writer intend to tell us?A.The cause of making errors in science.B.The significance of scientific discovery.C.The importance of doing experiments.D.The correct attitudes towards failures.CIT’S SUMMER!Get out and enjoy itSummer is here and the weather is beautiful, providing a wealth of opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities. While they look somewhat different from the ones we see in Egypt, they also were built with great skill. The pyramids of Central America were built by the Mayan(玛雅) and Aztec(阿芝台克) peoples, as well as other smaller groups. However, pyramids were not used only for their gods. Before Europeans came to the area in the 1500s, many of the cultures of the Americas, such as the Mayan and Aztec, had much knowledge about mathematics and astrology. They thought that the night sky could be used as a mirror to explain many aspects of life, which is the reason why they studied it carefully. The temples on top of the pyramids were also used as places for watching theskies. The Mayans had a solid understanding of the movement of stars and planets. This helped them understand the seasons. They held my children and grandchildren and comfortedmy neighbors. They covered my face ,combed(梳)my hair and washed the rest of my body. These hands are the mark of where I’ve been and the ruggedness (崎岖)of life.”I never look at my hands the same again.
