It is believed that skating was developed about 3,000 years ago in Scandinavia. In the Netherlands, skating was a way to travel over the canals in winter.
Although the Netherlands is the birthplace of speed skating, the first known skating competition is thought to ever been held in 1676. Competitions sprung up across the northern part of Europe shortly after that, but the first official speed skating events were not held until 1863 in Oslo, Norway. In 1889, the Netherlands hosted the first World Championships, bringing
together the Dutch, Russians, Americans and English.
Speed skating has been a part of the Olympic programme since the 1st Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix Mont Blanc in 1924. At first only men took part, but women’s events were in the 1960 Squaw Valley Games.
Speed skatig in the Olympic Games includes ten events. Most events are held once, but the men’s and women’s 500 metres are held twice.
The final result is based on the total time of the two racers. In each event, skaters race in pairs against the clock.

Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have discovered a new way of getting the Sun’s energy. A team from MIT have created a new way that involves coating windows with special dyes(染料). The dyes help get the light from the Sun and then change it into electricity. The team’s discovery could change buildings into energy plants. It could even one day mean that the windows in our houses could give power to our homes. The scientists say their dyes can produce ten times more power than the traditional solar panels used around the world today. They think that this clean energy technology could be available within the next three years.
The idea was first developed in the 1970s but was then given up.. Scientists then found that too much of the collected sunlight couldn’t reach the solar saving units at the edges of the window. The MIT engineers revived the idea and used coloured dyes to stop the light from escaping. MIT’s development also does away with the need for hundreds of solar cells. Instead, their method only requires cells around the edges of the window. MIT’s Professor Baldo explained: "The co ated glass would let through about 10 per cent of the Sun to light up the room, and the rest would be stored to the edges to solar cells to make electricity…It would look like smoked glass because of the dyes." The new discovery could help fight climate change.
