On October 5, Katmai National Park and Preserve in southern Alaska kicked off Fat Bear Week, when fans compare before and after photos of bears to vote for the one they think has gained the most weight before they bed down for the long freezing winter. Bear 747, also known as “Bear Force One”, took the first-place spot with 68, 105 votes. It weighed around 1, 400 pounds.Fat Bear Week started in 2014. At first, it was just Fat Bear Tuesday. Mike Fitz, a former park keeper at Katmai, noticed that live webcams showing the bears generated a lot of online comments, so he let people vote for their favorite fat bear on the Internet. The one-day event attracted 1, 700 votes. In 2015, it was extended to a week. Last year, nearly 800, 000 people got involved, turning it into a global campaign. The contest serves two main purposes. First, some of America's national parks are in remote and undeveloped areas, which are difficult or costly to reach. Fat Bear Week brings Alaska's wilderness to fans' computer screens. “It's not limited to the fortunate few who can go to the river anymore. ”Fitz said.Second, Fat Bear Week brings attention to the bears and the ecosystems they live in. The 2, 200 bears of Katmai are strong for feeding on some of the healthiest salmon (三文鱼)in the world, said Sara Wolman, a former park keeper. Salmon in the Pacific Northwest are suffering from overfishing, dam construction and warming rivers due to climate change. Luckily, Brooks River, which Katmai's bears like to fish in, has been free from these threats so far.Fat Bear Week has spread like viruses. Fans and creators say it's because it shows a conservation success story. For one week, people don't have to focus on climate changeor habitat loss. “Maybe things aren't super great all the time in the world, " said Felicia Jimenez, who is a current Katmai keeper. “But there are some really fat bears in Alaska. ”24. Why was Bear 747 the winner?A. It was the heaviest.B. It was the most famous.C. It gained the most pounds.D. It presented the best photos.25. What is the purpose of paragraph 2?A. To praise Mike Fitz for his work.B. To review the history of the event.C. To show the popularity of fat bears.D. To explain the role of live webcams.26. What can we learn about Katmai's bears?A. They bring tourists to the park.B. They have a stable food source.C. They remain difficult to be seen.D. They face a population decline.27. Which can be the best title for the text?A. Fat Bear Week: Conservation Is JoyfulB. Brown Bears: Winter Survival Is CrucialC. Bear 747: A Fat Yet Healthy ChampionD. Katmai's Bears: A Special Beauty ContestCThroughout history, many species of animals have been threatened with extinction. When Europeans first arrived in North America, more than 60 million buffalo(水牛)lived on the continent. Yet hunting the buffalo was so popular during the 19th century that by 1900 the animal's population had fallen to about 400 before the government stepped in to protect the species. In some countries today, the elephant faces a similar challenge,as illegal hunters kill the animals for the ivory in their tusks.Yet not all animals with commercial value face this threat(威胁).The cow,for example, is a valuable source of food, but no one worries that the cow will soon be extinct. Why does the commercial value of ivory threaten the elephant, while the commercial value of beef protects the cow?The reason is that elephants are a common resource, while cows are private goods. Elephants wander freely without any owners. The hunter has a strong motivation to killas many elephants as he can find. Because illegal hunters are numerous, each has only a slight motivation to preserve the elephant population. By contrast, cattle live on farms that are privately owned. Each farmer makes great effort to maintain the cattle population on his farm because he harvests the benefit of these efforts.Governments have tried to solve the elephant's problem in two ways. Some countries, such as Kenya and Uganda, have made it illegal to kill elephants and sell their ivory. Yet these laws have been hard to put into effect, and elephant populations have continued to dwindle. By contrast, other countries, such as Malawi and Namibia, have made elephants private goods and allowed people to kill elephants, but only those on their own property. With private ownership and the profit motive now on its side, the African elephant might someday be as safe from extinction as the cow. The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle pointed out the problem with common resources:"What is common to many is taken least care of, for all men have greater regard for what is their own than for what they possess in common with others."28. Why does the author mention buffalo in paragraph 1?A. To introduce a similar threat to elephants.B. To provide an example of species extinction.C. To offer an explanation for government policies.D. To present the statistics of the buffalo in America.29. Why do elephants face threats while cows are safe?A. They are under different law protection.B. They attract different groups of hunters.C. They contain different commercial value.D. They represent different ownership types.30.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?A. Bans on killing elephants for ivory.B. Effective laws for elephant protection.C. Methods of making elephants private goods.D. Government policies on the elephant's problem.31. What can we learn from Aristotle's words?A. People hold little regard for others' property.B. People want to profit from common resources.C. People care more about their own possession.D. People tend to take what they own for granted.DIf someone created a flying machine capable of tracking you down by listening for your voice, you might be terrified. But what if you were trapped in ruins after a natural disaster and first responders couldn't locate you? Maybe then a human-seeking drone(无人机)wouldn't be such a terrible idea. That concept is the focus for engineers at Germany's Fraunhofer FKIE Institute, who've built a drone to find people by detecting (探测)human screams."The human-seeking drone would be ideal for post-disaster situations, such as earthquakes, hurricanes and wildfires,"said Macarena Varela, one of the lead engineers. "They could hover over an area that rescue crews have difficulty getting to and locate exactly where people may be trapped."Locating people by sound presents its share of challenges. An auditory (听觉的)system would need to distinguish human cries from sounds that often happen in nature, such as animal calls and wind. It might also need to recognize patterns associated with kicking, clapping or other ways people try to get the attention of rescue teams.Engineers took those situations into account when building out their concept drone. They recorded themselves screaming, tapping and creating other noises that might be a sign of people in trouble. Then, they analyzed each sound frequency to find common signatures and used those to train artificial intelligence software. They also worked to remove the noise created by the drone and other environmental sounds.Once the software part was complete, the team placed tiny digital microphones under the drone and used signal processing techniques that enabled them to track where human noises are coming from. The microphones also enhanced the volume and clarity of the speech. So far, they have conducted successful open field experiments, finding that the drone can estimate a victim's location within a few seconds of picking up sound.Next, they would like to add a higher frequency microphone to a drone to acquire more audio sound signals. The idea is to pick up noises from hundreds of meters away, Varela said. In the real world, victim's location data might one day be sent wirelessly to emergency crews carrying a tablet.32.What is the advantage of the human-seeking drone?A. Its high speed of flying.B. Its long working hours.C. Its quick response to screams.D. Its easy access to disaster scene.33. What can the auditory system do?A. Recognize human cries.B. Pick up sounds from far away.C. Send victim's location data to a tablet.D. Improve the quality of human screams.34. What does the underlined word"signatures"in paragraph 4 refer to?A. Effects.B. Symbols.C. Features.D. Situations.35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. AI Enables Drones to Give Better PerformanceB. Human-seeking Drones Replace Rescue CrewsC. Engineers Teach Drones to Hunt Human ScreamsD. Rescuers Use Drones to Locate Disaster Survivors第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Her new book, Birding Is MyFavorite Video Game, combines fascinating facts with charming pictures, and it's guaranteed to make you laugh. In fact, the learning and laughing are both equally important to Rosemary."There's so much to love about birds," notes Rosemary. "I admire that they're real-life, modern dinosaurs! As an artist, I'm captivated by their color variations.Once you get into birds, the interest snowballs. You can find them almost everywhere. You start to notice subtle behaviors and wing patterns. You're never bored again. Teaching a kid to watch birds is a huge gift."Birds make regular appearances in Rosemary's nature art comics(连环漫画). She created charts(图表)explaining the songs and calls of common eastern and western birds. One of her most popular pieces is a flow chart helping you to decide whether or not to help a baby bird fallen from a nest. And her own personal favorite cartoon is about tiny owls, meant to be both motivational and mildly disturbing. Rosemary explains: "One reader asked me if we had any evidence that these owls can kill and eat a moose(驼鹿). My response was, not yet…"Rosemary loves other animals, and is especially proud of a poster she drew showing every snake in the US and Canada. She also has a real soft spot for butterflies. "Their behaviors can be surprisingly complex," she points out. "They defend habitats with dogfights. They have complex relationships with poisonous plants. Some of them cat waste and drink tears. Oh, and it helps that they pose nicely for photos."Mostly self-taught, Rosemary has taken a few art courses, even studying video game art for a bit. During her career, she's created many educational charts, and has been working on some children's science books. She also has an upcoming comics novel about the solar system."I'm excited to share more stories about the natural world." Rosemary says about the future of her nature art comics. You're probably most familiar with American Sign Language, but sign language is used all over the world and has nearly 150 variations. Sign language interpreters can be seen everywhere from classrooms and graduation ceremonies to major sporting events. When you think of sign language, you most likely imagine signers using their hands to form words and letters. However, hands arc only one of the many different body language techniques that signers use to get their meaning across. In fact, much of the grammatical structure of sign language is not indicated by the signer's hands. While the hands are responsible for forming the words themselves, markers called "non-manual elements" control much of the languages' grammatical structure. Non-manual elements (or markers) arc body language techniques that don't use the hands. These include head movements, body positioning and facial expressions. Used together with the signs. these elements give sign language a subtle(微妙的)and extremely complicated grammatical structure. Linguist Andrea Lackner from Alpcn-Adria University in Austria did a study that shows just how important these non-manual elements arc to sign language users. The study assessed just how many different things non-manual elements can do. For this study, all participants were deaf users of Austrian Sign Language. They watched a video of someone using sign language, and they had to describe the purpose of each non-manual element. The results were very complicated. For instance, things as subtle as the direction of the signer's gaze can indicate whether or not a statement is hypothetical(假设的). A single head movement can indicate the emotion of astatement, a conditional or if situation, or a signer's feelings toward a hypothetical question. Body language is always important, but in sign language, it can change the entire meaning of a sentence!8. What do signers use their hands to do mostly?A. To know people's words and letters.B. To understand people's meanings.C. To form the grammatical structure.D. To form words and letters.9. What do non-manual elements include?A. Words, sign language and body language.B. Head movements, body language and signs.C. Head movements, body positioning and facial expressions.D. Body positioning, facial expressions and signs.10. What does the study show about sign language?A. The main function of the non-manual elements.B. The importance of the non-manual elements.C. The influence of body language on sign language.D. The influence of sign language on body language.11. What may be the best title for the text?A. Non-manual Elements Counts in Sign LanguageB. Ways to Avoid Being MisunderstoodC. Grammatical Elements in Sign LanguageD. The Importance of Sign LanguageDNobel prize-winners, legendary(传奇的)authors, and famous scientists-you might think all these people were born to be creative. However, that's not always the case. While well-known figures like Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein did their most significant work in their youth, famous American poet Robert Frost and English-born natural scientist Charles Darwin were known as "late bloomers"-people whose talents were not noticeable until later in life. This idea of "peaking" at different times inspired new research from the United States. "Many people believe that creativity is exclusively(独有地)associated with youth, but it really depends on what kind of creativity you're talking about," said Bruce Weinberg, a professor of economics at the University of Chicago and co-author of the study.According to the study, published earlier this month in the journal De Economist, there are two types of people: conceptual(概念的)and experimental thinkers. To reach this conclusion, researchers took the 31 previous winners of the Nobel Prize in economics and arranged them according to when they did their most significant work, to identify their creative peaks. Some peaked from ages 25-29. Classified as conceptual thinkers, these people think outside of the box, coming up with new ideas before they become used to the conventional way of doing things. The second creative peak came with economists in their 50s. These are experimental thinkers who have been in their fields for a long time. This allows them to learn from errors and experiment with different processes, before eventually finding new solutions."Whether you hit your creative peak early or late in your career depends on whether you have a conceptual or experimental approach," said Weinberg. He added that their study isn't limited to economics, saying it can apply to other creative disciplines(知识领域). So if you're struggling to come up with new ideas, don't panic. Your creative peak may be yet to arrive.12. What did the study from the US find?A. Young people arc not necessarily more creative than old people.B. Most people take a conceptual approach when thinking.C. People's creative peak in their life is related to their job type.D. Conceptual and experimental thinkers hit their peaks at different times.13. What is the characteristic of conceptual thinkers?A. They tend to challenge conventional rules.B. They arc creative due to their young ages.C. They arc likely to follow traditonal rules.D. They fail to come up with new ideas.14. What do we know about experimental thinkers?A. Their talents usually bloom in their 20s.B. They are good at doing experiments.C. They work out new methods based on experience.D. They are more successful than conceptual thinkers.15. What would Weinberg probably agree with?A. It's difficult to find one's talent in later years.B. More research needs to be done about creative peaks.C. Conceptual thinkers could be more successful in the art field.D. Experimental thinkers from other fields may succeed in their 50s.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.How to Improve Math SkillsMake math part of your life. Take the opportunity to put your math skills to work in new and different situations outside your normal routine. 16 For example, if, say, a sweater that's regularly$38 is on sale for 30% off, what is the sale price? Or if you plan to hike a new trail that's 7 miles long and it takes you 20 minutes to walk a mile, how long should you plan for your hike to take?Make studying math a priority. 17 Doing so will help you avoid procrastinating(拖延)and make it easier to get into "math" mode(模式)instead of sitting and staring blankly at the math book for 10 minutes. After putting in your study time, reward yourself by doing something you enjoy. It will encourage you to get through your math work and help you associate it with something pleasurable.Take a break every hour. 18 You won't be able to maintain necessary focus and you'll quickly tire yourself out. Instead, take a quick break to stand up, stretch, get a drink, or use the bathroom every hour.19 In math, each topic builds upon the next, so, much like reading, it's difficult to make forward progress if you haven’t mastered all of the necessary steps. If you're struggling with a particular idea or concept, don't skip it and move ahead.20A. Solve problems neatly and completely.B. Master one concept before moving on to the next.C. Take the time to apply math in common situations.D. Avoid trying to solve math problems in your head.E. Don't try to work hard through four unbroken hours of math problems.F. Instead, seek help from the instructor or the tutor until you've mastered the idea.G. Tasks are scheduled so tightly that break times are often used to finish the day’s work. This type of schedule is far too demanding for long missions on the International Space Station(ISS). ISS crewmembers usually live in space for at least a quarter of a year. They work five days on and two days off to mimic the normal way they do things on Earth as much as possible . Weekends give the crew valuable. Weekends give the crew valuable time to rest and do a few hours of housework. They can communicate with family and friends by email , internet phone and through private video conferences. While astronauts cannot go to a baseball game or a movie in orbit, there aremany familiar activities that they can still enjoy. Before a mission, the family and friends of each ISS crewmember put together a collection of family photos, messages, videos and reading material for the astronauts to look at when they will be floating 370 kilometers above the Earth. During the mission, the crew also receives care packages with CDs, books, magazines, photos and letters . And as from early 2010, the internet became available on the ISS , giving astronauts the chance to do some “web surfing (冲浪)”in their personal time. Besides relaxing with these more common entertainments, astronauts can simply enjoy the experience of living in space. Many astronauts say that one of the most relaxing things to do in space is to look out the window and stare at the universe and the Earth’s vast land mass and oceans.41. The average temperature on Earth for last year was the second warmest since written records began 140 years ago.The global average surface temperature in 2001 was 14.42 degrees centigrade, the World Meteorological Organization said. The record, set in 1998, was 14.58 degrees centigrade.“Temperatures are getting hotter, and they are getting hotter faster now than at any time in the past, ” said Michel Jarraud, a WMO official.Carbon dioxide(二氧化碳) produced from burning fuels is the most common of the so-called greenhouse gases. The growing concentration(集中) in the atmosphere of these gases is thought to be warming the Earth. “Most of the causes of global warming are due to human action, ” said Ken Davidson, director of WMO’s climate program me department.Every year, large amounts of gases produced by factories, cars and burning trees hold in too much heat and cause global warming. Many scientists believe the warming, if not stopped, will cause extreme climate changes this century.Throughout the world, the spreading of particular diseases and other threats(威胁) to human health depend largely on local climates. Extreme temperatures can directly cause loss of life. Warm temperatures can increase air and water pollution, which in turn can harm human health. In the Earth’s atmosphere there are tiny amounts of gases called greenhouse gases. These gases hold in the heat that comes up from the sun-warmed Earth. As cities have increased in size and population, factories and industries in the world have grown. People need more and more electricity, cars and other things. So more greenhouse gases have been added to the atmosphere. This causes more heat to be trapped than in the past. This is called the greenhouse effect.45. If you don’t know the exact time, you can still find out where south is, but you’ll need to be patient.①Find a straight sick and put it in the ground in a place where you can mark its shadow.②Try to position the stick as vertically(垂直)as you can. You can check this by making a simple plumb line (铅锤线)with a piece of string and weight. You haven’t got any string?
