The novel opens with the Bennet family, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet and their five daughters, being visited by Mr. Bingley, a wealthy and eligible bachelor. Mrs. Bennet hopes to match one of her daughters with him. At a local ball, Mr. Bingley is taken with the eldest Bennet daughter, Jane, while his friend Mr. Darcy appears aloof and proud.Elizabeth Bennet, the second eldest daughter, overhears Mr. Darcy's dismissive comments about her and is immediately put off by his arrogance. As Mr. Bingley and Jane grow closer, Mr. Darcy finds himself increasingly drawn to Elizabeth despite his initial reservations. The novel explores themes of love, class, and social expectations as Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy navigate misunderstandings, societal pressures, and their own personal pride and prejudices. Other characters, such as the foolish Mr. Collins and the charming Mr. Wickham, add complexity to the unfolding romantic and social dramas. Their eventual union is a triumph over the societal norms and prejudices that initially kept them apart.Note: This is a brief summary of the novel, and the richness of the characters and social commentary in "Pride and Prejudice" is best appreciated by reading the full text.。

Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice is a novel by Jane Austen, first published in 1813. The story follows the main character Elizabeth Bennet as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education, and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of early 19thcentury England. Elizabeth is the second of five daughters of a country gentleman living near the fictional town of Meryton in Hertfordshire, near London.Though the story is set at the turn of the 19th century, it retains a fascination for modern readers, continuing near the top of lists of 'most loved books' such as The Big Read.[1] It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature and receives considerable attention from literary scholars. Modern interest in the book has resulted in a number of dramatic adaptations and an abundance of novels and stories imitating Austen's memorable characters or themes. To date, the book has sold some 20 million copies worldwidePlot summaryThe narrative opens with Mr Bingley, a wealthy, charming and social young bachelor, moving into Netherfield Park in the neighbourhood of the Bennet family. Mr Bingley is soon well received, while his friend Mr Darcy makes a less favorable firstimpression by appearing proud and condescending at a ball that they attend (this is partly explained in that he detests dancing and is not much for light conversation). Mr Bingley singles out Elizabeth's elder sister, Jane, for particular attention, and it soon becomes apparent that they have formed an attachment to each other. By contrast, Darcy slights Elizabeth, who overhears and jokes about it despite feeling a budding resentment. On paying a visit to Mr Bingley's sister, Jane is caught in a heavy downpour, catches cold, and is forced to stay at Netherfield for several days. Elizabeth arrives to nurse her sister and is thrown into frequent company with Mr Darcy, who begins to perceive his attachment to her, but is too proud to proceed on this feeling.Mr Collins, a clergyman, pays a visit to the Bennets. Mr Bennet and Elizabeth are much amused by his obsequious veneration of his employer, the noble Lady Catherine de Bourgh, as well as by his selfimportant and pedantic nature. It soon becomes apparent that Mr Collins has come to Longbourn to choose a wife from among the Bennet sisters (his cousins) and Elizabeth has been singled out. At the same time, Elizabeth forms an acquaintance with Mr Wickham, a militia officer who claims to have been very seriously mistreated by Mr Darcy, despite having been award of Mr Darcy's father. This tale, and Elizabeth's attraction to Mr Wickham, adds fuel to her dislike of Mr Darcy. At a ball given by Mr Bingley at Netherfield, Mr Darcy becomes aware of a general expectation that Mr Bingley and Jane will marry, and the Bennet family, with the exception of Jane and Elizabeth, make a public display of poor manners and decorum. The following morning, Mr Collins proposes marriage to Elizabeth, who refuses him, much to her mother's distress. Mr Collins recovers and promptly becomes engaged to Elizabeth's close friend Charlotte, a homely woman with few prospects. Mr Bingley abruptly quits Netherfield and returns to London, and Elizabeth is convinced that Mr Darcy and Mr Bingley's sister have conspired to separate him from Jane.In the spring, Elizabeth visits Charlotte and Mr Collins in Kent. Elizabeth and her hosts are frequently invited to Rosings Park, home of Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Darcy's aunt; coincidentally, Darcy also arrives to visit. Darcy again finds himself attracted to Elizabeth and impetuously proposes to her. Elizabeth, however, has just learned of Darcy's role in separating Mr Bingley from Jane from his cousin Colonel Fitzwilliam. She angrily rebukes him, and a heated discussion follows; she charges him with destroying her sister's happiness, with treating Mr Wickhamdisgracefully, and with having conducted himself towards her in an ungentlemanlike manner. Mr Darcy, shocked, ultimately responds with a letter giving a good account of (most of) his actions: Wickham had exchanged his legacies for a cash payment, only to return after gambling away the money to reclaim the forfeited inheritance; he then attempted to elope with Darcy's young sister, thereby to capture her fortune. Regarding Mr Bingley and Jane, Darcy claimed he had observed no reciprocal interest in Jane for Bingley. Elizabeth later came to acknowledge the truth of Darcy's assertions. Some months later, Elizabeth and her Aunt and Uncle Gardiner visit Pemberley, Darcy's estate, believing he will be absent for the day. He returns unexpectedly, and though surprised, he is gracious and welcoming. He treats the Gardiners with great civility; he introduces Elizabeth to his sister, and Elizabeth begins to realise her attraction to him. Their reacquaintance is cut short, however, by news that Lydia, Elizabeth's sister, has run away to elope with Mr Wickham. Elizabeth and the Gardiners return to Longbourn, where Elizabeth grieves that her renewed acquaintance with Mr Darcy will end because of her sister's disgrace.Lydia and Wickham are soon found, then married by the clergy;they visit Longbourn, where Lydia lets slip that Mr Darcy was responsible for finding the couple and negotiating their marriage—at great expense to himself. Elizabeth is shocked but does not dwell further on the topic due to Mr Bingley's return and subsequent proposal to Jane, who immediately accepts. Lady Catherine de Bourgh later bursts in on Longbourn; intending to thwart local rumour, she warns Elizabeth against marrying Mr Darcy. Elizabeth refuses her demands. Disgusted, Lady Catherine leaves and drops by to inform her nephew on Elizabeth's abominable behaviour. However, this lends hope to Darcy that Elizabeth's opinion of him may have changed. He travels to Longbourn and proposes again; and now Elizabeth accepts.Major themesMany critics take the novel's title as a starting point when analysing the major themes of Pride and Prejudice; however, Robert Fox cautions against reading too much into the title because commercial factors may have played a role in its selection. "After the success of Sense and Sensibility, nothing would have seemed more natural than to bring out another novel of the same author using again the formula of antithesis and alliteration for the title. It should be pointed out that the qualitiesof the title are not exclusively assigned to one or the other of the protagonists; both Elizabeth and Darcy display pride and prejudice."[5]A major theme in much of Austen's work is the importance of environment and upbringing on the development of young people's character and morality.[6] Social standing and wealth are not necessarily advantages in her world, and a further theme common to Jane Austen's work is ineffectual parents. In Pride and Prejudice, the failure of Mr and Mrs Bennet as parents is blamed for Lydia's lack of moral judgment; Darcy, on the other hand, has been taught to be principled and scrupulously honourable, but he is also proud and overbearing.[6] Kitty, rescued from Lydia's bad influence and spending more time with her older sisters after they marry, is said to improve greatly in their superior society真质简介道故事最主假如盘绕着18世纪终19世纪初,英国天主城绅贵族的供爱战婚姻问题. Pride and PrejudiceJane Austen began her second novel, Pride and Prejudice, before she was twenty-one. It was origi nally titled First Impression because the appearances of the characters created the plot of the no vel. However, because the novel is also concerned with the effects of the character's first impressi ons, that is their prejudice, Jane found the title Pride and Prejudice more appropriate.Pride and Prejudice, similar to other Jane Austen's novels, is written in gentle or Horacian satire. The main object of Jane's satire in the novel is the mercenary and the ignorance of the people, a common criticism of the 18th century. Characters in the novel which best carries these qualities a re Mrs. Bennet, a foolish woman who talks too much and is obsess with getting her daughters ma rried; Lydia Bennet, the youngest of the Bennet daughter who is devoted to a life of dancing, fash ions, gossips and flirting; and Mr. Williams Collins, the silly and conceited baboon who is complet ely stupify by Lady Catherine in every aspect of his life that he has forgotten his own morals and d uty. The tone of the novel is light, satirical, and vivid. Scenes such as Mr. Collins proposal to Elizab eth, and Lady Catherine visits to Lizzy at Longbourn, provides comic relief to the reader while at t he same time revealing certain characteristics of the characters. For example, Lydia's lack of com mon sense and responsibility is revealed when she takes pride in being the first Bennet girl to be married. Lydia does not take into consideration the circumstance of her marriage, the personality of her husband, or the prospects of their marriage for the future. Elizabeth Bennet's ability to lau gh off her misfortunate and to continue to be optimistic, considering her situation, also contribut es to the tone of the novel. The point of view in Pride and Prejudice is limited omniscient; the sto ry is told through Elizabeth, but not in first person. As a result, the mood of the novel lacks dramatic emotions. The atmosphere is intellectual and cold; there is little descriptions of the setti ng. The main actions of the novel are the interactions between opinions, ideas, and attitudes, whi ch weaves and advances the plot of the novel. The emotions in the novel are to be perceived ben eath the surface of the story and are not to be expressed to the readers directly. Jane's powers of subtle discrimination and shrewd perceptiveness is revealed in Pride and Prejudice; she is able to convey such a complex message using a simple, yet witty, style. The main subject in the novel is stated in the first sentence of the novel: "It is a truth universally a cknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." In thi s statement, Jane has cleverly done three things: she has declared that the main subject of the no vel will be courtship and marriage, she has established the humorous tone of the novel by taking a simple subject to elaborate and to speak intelligently of, and she has prepared the reader for a c hase in the novel of either a husband in search of a wife, or a women in pursuit of a husband. The first line alsodefines Jane's book as a piece of literature that connects itself to the 18th century period. Pride a nd Prejudice is 18th century because of the emphasis on man in his socialenvironment rather than in his individual conditions. The use of satire and wit, a common form of 18th century literature, also contributes to label the book as 18th century. However, because Jan e Austen had allowed personal feelings of the characters to be expressed in her work, she can als o be classified as Romantic. In the figure of Elizabeth, Jane Austen shows passion attempting to fi nd a valid mode of existence in society. Passion and reasons also comes together in the novel to s how that they are complementary of marriage. There are seven different marriages presented in the novel. Excluding the Gardiner and the Lucas, the remaining five marriages contrasts each other to reveal Jane's opinions and thoughts on the subject of marriage. The marriage between Darcy and Elizabeth reveals the characteristics which constitutes a success ful marriage. One of these characteristics is that the feeling cannot be brought on by appearances , and must gradually develop between the two people as they get to know one another. In the be ginning, Elizabeth and Darcy were distant from each other because of their prejudice. The series of events which they both experienced gave them the opportunity to understand one another an d the time to reconcile their feelings for each other. Thus, their mutual understanding is the foun dation of their relationship and will lead them to a peaceful and lasting marriage. This relationshi p between Elizabeth and Darcy reveals the importance of getting to know one's partner before m arrying. The marriage between Jane Bennet and Bingley is also an example of successful marriage . Jane Austen, through Elizabeth, expresses her opinion of this in the novel:"....really believed all his [Bingley] expectations of felicity, to be rationally founded, because they had for basis the excellent understanding, and super-excellent disposition of Jane, and a general s imilarity of feeling and taste between her and himself." (Chapter 55) However, unlike Darcy and E lizabeth, there is a flaw in their relationship. The flaw is that both characters are too gullible and t oo good-hearted to ever act strongly against external forces that may attempt to separate them:"You [Jane and Bingley] are each of you so complying, that nothing will ever be resolved on; so ea sy, that every servant will cheat you; and so generous, that you will always exceed your income." ( Chapter 55)Obviously, Lydia and Wickham's marriage is an example of an bad marriage. Their marriage was b ased on appearances, good looks, and youthful vivacity. Once these qualities can no longer be se en by each other, the once strong relationship will slowly fade away. As in the novel, Lydia and Wi ckham's marriage gradually disintegrates; Lydia becomes a regular visitor at her two elder sister's homes when "her husband was gone to enjoy himself in London or Bath." Through their relations hip, Jane Austen shows that hasty marriage based on superficial qualities quickly cools and leads to unhappiness.Although little is told of how Mr. Bennet and Mrs. Bennet got together, it can be inferred by their conversions that their relationship was similar to that of Lydia and Wickham - Mr. Bennet had ma rried a woman he found sexually attractive without realizing she was an unintelligent woman. Mr s. Bennet's favoritism towards Lydia and her comments on how she was once as energetic as Lydi a reveals this similarity. Mr. Bennet's comment on Wickham being his favorite son-in-law reinforc es this parallelism. The effect of the relationships was that Mr. Bennet would isolate himself from his family; he found refugee in his library or in mocking his wife. Mr. Bennet's self-realization at th e end of the novel in which he discovers that his lack of attention towards his family had lead his f amily to develop the way they are, was too late to save his family. He is Jane Austen's example of a weak father. In these two latter relationships, Austen shows that it is necessary to use good jud gement to select a spouse, otherwise the two people will lose respect for each other. The last example of a marriage is a of a different nature than the ones mentioned above. The mar riage between Mr. Collins and Charlotte is based on economics rather than on love or appearance . It was a common practice during Austen's time for women to marry a husband to save herself fr om spinsterhood or to gain financial security. However, Jane Austen viewed this as a type of prost itution and disapproved of it. In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen dramatizes this form of womeninequality and show that women who submits themselves to this type of marriage will have to su ffer in tormenting silence as Charlotte does:"When Mr. Collins said any thing of which his wife might reasonably be ashamed, which certainly was not unseldom, she [Elizabeth] would involuntarily turned her eye onCharlotte. Once or twice she could discern a faint blush; but in general Charlotte wisely did not h ear." (Chapter 28)These five marriages contributes to the theme that a happy and strong marriage takes time to bui ld and must be based on mutual feeling, understanding, and respect. Hastymarriages acting on impulse, and based on superficial qualities will not survive and will lead to in evitable unhappiness. In Pride and Prejudice, Jane has denounced the elements of marriage and society that she found distasteful. These are the conclusions of her observation of the people in her world. However in h er writing, Jane has also reflected her own enjoyment in life among these people with and witho ut their faults.。

The five Bennet sisters - including strong-willed Elizabeth and young Lydia - have been raised by their mother with one purpose in life: finding a husband. When a wealthy bachelor takes up residence in a nearby mansion, the Bennets are abuzz. Amongst the man's sophisticated circle of friends, surely there will be no shortage of suitors for the Bennet sisters. But when Elizabeth meets up with the handsome and - it would seem - snobbish Mr. Darcy, the battle of the sexes is joined. Prepared on 24 November 2020Today I want to share the book I was reading these days with is called pride and prejudice written by an English writer Jane Austen and came out in showed the society landed gentry of early 19th century England by telling the love story between Elizabeth and is the second of five daughters of ,who is a country gentleman living in a town near rich bachelor called became the new neighbor of the Bennets and fell in love with the eldest daughter Jane at the first eye, which made very happy because she wants her daughters married rich with his friend Darcy comes to a party where Darcy and Elizabeth is a wealthy Duke so he is always said Elizabeth’s appearance is just in the range he could thinks him as an rude man thus ignoring soon after ,Darcy found Elizabeth is an innocent and lovely girl and he changed his idea of her little by little, especially after Elizabeth agreeing to dance with Darcy thinks Elizabeth is a good girl but he cannot the rudeness of her worried that Jane is not attracted by Bingley but his property so he persuades Bingley to stay away from Jane. There is a person called Wickham praised by many people getting on well with tells Elizabeth that he was the housekeeper of the Darcy’s familly and he could have inherited a part of estate of Darcy’s father but Darcy stole it .Elizabeth disgusts Darcy more and refused to marry writes a letter to Elizabeth to explain some facts that he persuaded Bingley to leave Jane because he is not satisfied with Mrs. Bennet and Elizabeth younger sisters’ impolite told a lie to her,and the fact is Wickham wasted his part of estate reading this letter,Elizabeth regrets to blame Darcy wrongly. The next summer,Elizabeth hears her youngest sister ran away with indebted Wickham and comes across her surprised,Darcy has paid the debt for her sister and ’s more ,she finds that Darcy is no more an arrogant man but a begin to fall in love with each other while Jane and Bingley renew their proposes to Elizabeth again and she agrees. This story reflects the author's view of marriage: it is wrong to marry for wealth, money, and status, and it is foolish to get married without considering the above factors. Therefore, she opposed marriage for money, is opposed to the marriage as a trifling matter. She stressed the importance of the ideal marriage, and the feelings of both men and women as the cornerstone of the ideal 's different attitude to Darcy's two marriage proposals actually reflects the pursuit of women's independence and equality of personality.Pride and Prejudice is perhaps one of the greatest love stories in the world, it tells that women have the right to live better, but not to think that women should be taken for granted. My favorite part in this novel is spoken by Darcy to Elizabeth that”you are too generous to trifle with me.”I think this shows the trust and respect between the couple.。

1NOT all that Mrs. Bennet, however, with the assistance of her five daughters, could ask on the subject was sufficient to draw from her husband any satisfactory description of Mr. Bingley. They attacked him in various ways; with barefaced questions, ingenious suppositions, and distant surmises; but he eluded the skill of them all; and they were at last obliged to accept the second-hand intelligence of their neighbour Lady Lucas. Her report was highly favourable. Sir William had been delighted with him. He was quite young, wonderfully handsome, extremely agreeable, and, to crown the whole, he meant to be at the next assembly with a large party. Nothing could be more delightful! To be fond of dancing was a certain step towards falling in love; and very lively hopes of Mr. Bingley's heart were entertained.Mr. Bingley was good looking and gentlemanlike; he had a pleasant countenance, and easy, unaffected manners. His brother-in-law, Mr. Hurst, merely looked the gentleman; but his friend Mr. Darcy soon drew the attention of the room by his fine, tall person, handsome features, noble mien; and the report which was in general circulation within five minutes after his entrance, of his having ten thousand a year. The gentlemen pronounced him to be a fine figure of a man, the ladies declared he was much handsomer than Mr. Bingley, and he was looked at with great admiration for about half the evening, till his manners gave adisgust which turned the tide of his popularity; for he was discovered to be proud, to be above his company, and above being pleased; and not all his large estate in Derbyshire could then save him from having a most forbidding, disagreeable countenance, and being unworthy to be compared with his friend.Mr. Bingley had soon made himself acquainted with all the principal people in the room; he was lively and unreserved, danced every dance, was angry that the ball closed so early, and talked of giving one himself at Netherfield. Such amiable qualities must speak for themselves. What a contrast between him and his friend! Mr. Darcy danced only once with Mrs. Hurst and once with Miss Bingley, declined being introduced to any other lady, and spent the rest of the evening in walking about the room, speaking occasionally to one of his own party. His character was decided. He was the proudest, most disagreeable man in the world, and every body hoped that he would never come there again. Amongst the most violent against him was Mrs. Bennet, whose dislike of his general behaviour was sharpened into particular resentment by his having slighted one of her daughters.《傲慢与偏见》经典英文段落篇2Mr. Bingley followed his advice. Mr. Darcy walked off; and Elizabeth remained with no very cordial feelings towards him. She told the story however with great spirit among her friends; for she had a lively, playful disposition, which delighted in any thing ridiculous. The evening altogether passed off pleasantly to the whole family. Mrs. Bennet had seen her eldest daughter much admired by the Netherfield party. Mr. Bingley had danced with her twice, and she had been distinguished by his sisters. Jane was as muchgratified by this as her mother could be, though in a quieter way. Elizabeth felt Jane's pleasure. Mary had heard herself mentioned to Miss Bingley as the most accomplished girl in the neighbourhood; and Catherine and Lydia had been fortunate enough to be never without partners, which was all that they had yet learnt to care for at a ball. They returned therefore, in good spirits to Longbourn, the village where they lived, and of which they were the principal inhabitants. They found Mr. Bennet still up. With a book, he was regardless of time; and on the present occasion he had a good deal of curiosity as to the event of an evening which had raised such splendid expectations. He had rather hoped that all his wife's views on the stranger would be disappointed; but he soon found that he had a very different story to hear."Oh! my dear Mr. Bennet," as she entered the room, "we have had a most delightful evening, a most excellent ball. I wish you had been there. Jane was so admired, nothing could be like it. Every body said how well she looked; and Mr. Bingley thought her quite beautiful, and danced with her twice. Only think of that my dear; he actually danced with her twice; and she was the only creature in the room that he asked a second time. First of all, he asked Miss Lucas. I was so vexed to see him stand up with her; but, however, he did not admire her at all: indeed, nobody can, you know; and he seemed quite struck with Jane as she was going down the dance. So, he enquired who she was, and got introduced, and asked her for the two next. Then, the two third he danced with Miss King, and the two fourth with Maria Lucas, and the two fifth with Jane again, and the two sixth with Lizzy, and the Boulanger --"《傲慢与偏见》经典英文段落篇3IN consequence of an agreement between the sisters, Elizabeth wrote the next morning to her mother, to beg that the carriage might be sent for them in the course of the day. But Mrs. Bennet, who had calculated on her daughters remaining at Netherfield till the following Tuesday, which would exactly finish Jane's week, could not bring herself to receive hem with pleasure before. Her answer, therefore, was not propitious, at least not to Elizabeth's wishes, for she was impatient to get home. Mrs. Bennet sent them word that they could not possibly have the carriage before Tuesday; and in her postscript it was added that, if Mr. Bingley and his sister pressed them to stay longer, she could spare them very well. -- Against staying longer, however, Elizabeth was positively resolved -- nor did she much expect it would be asked; and fearful, on the contrary, as being considered as intruding themselves needlessly long, she urged Jane to borrow Mr. Bingley's carriage immediately, and at length it was settled that their original design of leaving Netherfield that morning should be mentioned, and the request made. The communication excited many professions of concern; and enough was said of wishing them to stay at least till the following day, to work on Jane; and till the morrow their going was deferred. Miss Bingley was then sorry that she had proposed the delay, for her jealousy and dislike of one sister much exceeded her affection for the other. The master of the house heard with real sorrow that they were to go so soon, and repeatedly tried to persuade Miss Bennet that it would not be safe for her -- that she was not enough recovered; but Jane was firm where she felt herself to be right.。

In Pride and Prejudice, the failure of Mr and Mrs Bennet as parents is blamed for Lydia's lack of moral judgment; Darcy, on the other hand, has been taught to be principled and scrupulously honourable, but he is also proud and overbearing.[6] Kitty, rescued from Lydia's bad influence and spending more time with her older sisters after they marry, is said to improve greatly in their superior society内容简介说故事最主要是围绕着18世纪末19世纪初,英国地主乡绅贵族的求爱和婚姻问题. After a pairs of person has the prejudice, then is unable fairly to judge the matter the result. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.。

Elizabeth Bennet: The second daughter in the Bennet family, and the most intelligent and quick-witted, Elizabeth is the protagonist of Pride and Prejudice and one of the most well-known femalecharacters in English literature。

Her admirable qualities are numerousshe is lovely, clever, and, in a novel defined by dialogue, she converses as brilliantly as anyone。

Her honesty, virtue, and lively wit enable her to rise above the nonsense and bad behaviorthat pervade her class-bound and often spiteful society。

Nevertheless, her sharp tongue and tendency to make hasty judgments often lead her astray; Pride and Prejudice is essentially the storyof how she (and her true love, Darcy) overe all obstaclesincluding their own personal failingsto find romantic happiness。

Elizabethmust not only cope with a hopeless mother, a distant father, two badly behaved younger siblings, and several snobbish, antagonizing females, she must also overe her own mistaken impressions of Darcy, which initially lead her to reject his proposals of marriage。

Her charms are sufficient to keep him interested, fortunately, whileshe navigates familial and social turmoil。

As she gradually es to recognize the nobility of Darcy's character, she realizes the error of her initial prejudice against him。
