2.1920’s Literature Literature took a giant leap during the 1920s. There were many new authors experimenting with literary forms that gave a new value to American literature. Their literature is sometimes called the literature of alienation, and the young authors are often called the "Lost Generation." Authors started to write more about the hard life and tended to move away from all of the old value s. Literature of the 1920s is reflected in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
The Jazz Age
The Great Gatsby takes place during the summer of 1922. Fitzgerald coined the phrase, "the Jazz Age" that same year to describe the flamboyant— "anything goes"—era that emerged in America after World War I.
3.The Flapper----A 1920’s Phenomenon
The term "flapper" first appeared in Great Britain after World War I. It was there used to describe young girls, still somewhat awkward in movement who had not yet entered womanhood. Authors such F. Scott Fitzgerald and artists such as John Held Jr. first used the term to the U.S., half reflecting and half creating the image and style of the flapper. Fitzgerald described the ideal flapper as "lovely, expensive, and about nineteen."
Here was a new generation, shouting the old cries, learning the old creeds, through a revery of long days and nights; destined finally to go out into that dirty gray turmoil to follow love and pride; a new generation dedicated more than the last to the fear of poverty and the worship of success; grown up to find all Gods dead, all wars fought, all faiths in man shaken. . . . ---------F. Scott Fitzgerald
