In 1860, a better plan was put forwardby an Englishman...This would solve the problem ofventilation...

Forty-two years later a tunnel wasactually begun 能够看出,只有 c. began a long time afterWilliam Low put up his plan 与课文事实相符,其他 3 个选择都与课文实际内容不符。

3. c前一句 It would be possible to build a platform意思为“建造一座平台是可能的”。

b. would be built和 c. could be built都是被动语态,合乎语法,但是could be built (可能或能够被建成)比would be built (会被建成)意思更贴切,更接近前一句的含义,所以选c.4. c该句的谓语动词 suggested 后面只能跟动名词短语或 that 从句,从句中用 should 加动词原形才合乎语法。

If you hadn't helped me, I would have died.

新概念英语第二册学习笔记Lesson651 should have done与could have done这两个词组都是属于虚拟语气用法。

例:we should have done our work first。

例:we had a difficult time during the war.

Lesson 64 The Channel Tunnel 【Text】In 1858, a French engineer, Aime Thome de Gamond, arrived in England with a plan for a twenty—one-mile tunnel under the English Channel。

He said that it would be possible to build a platform in the centre of the Channel. This platform would serve as a port and a railway station. The tunnel would be well-ventilated if tall chimneys were built above sea level。

In 1860, a better plan was put forward by an Englishman, William Low。

He suggested that a double railway—tunnel should be built。

This would solve the problem of ventilation, for if a train entered this tunnel, it would draw in fresh air behind it. Forty—two years later a tunnel was actually begun。

If,at the time, the British had not feared invasion, it would have been completed. The world had to wait almost another 100 years for the Channel Tunnel。
