Choose the ONE that you think is the best answer.Passage 1Questions 1 to 3 are based on the following passage:It is generally agreed that the first true cities appeared about 5000 years ago in the food-producing communities of the Middle East. The cities of Sumeria, Egypt and the Indus Valley possessed a number of characteristics which distinguished them a truly urban. The cities were very much larger and more densely populated than any previous settlement, and their function was clearly differentiated from that of the surrounding villages. In the cities the old patterns of kinship relations were replaced by a complex hierarchy of social classes based on the specialization of labor. Moreover, the need to keep records led to the development of writing and arithmetic, and the increased sophistication of urban society gave a new impetus to artistic expression of every kind. When the basis of city life was established in Europe the urban tradition was drawn from the ancient cities of the middle East, via the civilizations of Greece and Rome, we can trace three main phases in the growth of the West European city. The first of these is the medieval phase, which extends from the beginning of the 11th century A. D to about 1500. The second is the renaissance and Baroque phase, which can be traced from about 1 500 to the beginning of the 19th century. The third is the modern phase, extending from the early 19th century to the present day.Every medieval city began as a small settlement which grew up round a geographical or cultural focal point. This would often be a permanent structure such as a stronghold, a cathedral or a large church. In districts where travel and trade were well established, it might be a market, a river crossing, or a place where two or more trade routes met. In studies of urban geography other oldest part of a town is referred to as the nuclear settlement. There are many small towns in Europe where it is still possible to trace the outline of the original nuclear settlement. It is, of course, much more difficult to do this in the case if a large modern city which has grown to may times its original size. (358 words)1. The ancient cities were characterized by all the following EXCEPT _____A. larger populationsB. different locationsC. different rolesD. different social classes2. Which of the following statements is CORRECT?A. West European cities established their own urban tradition。

My father gave me strong advice against it, but with little effect. One day, being at Hull, I met a school-fellow who was about to sail for London in his father's ship, and he invited me to go with him, and without telling my father, I went on board. On the way to London, a storm arose, the ship was wrecked, and we barely escaped with our lives. I went on foot to London, where I met with the master of a vessel which did business with countries on the coast of Africa. He took a fancy to me, and offered me a chance to go with him on his voyages, which I HYPERLINK "/q/gladly" \o "ad.愉快地,高兴地" gladly accepted.A great storm came up, and the ship was tossed about for many days, until we did not know where we were. Suddenly we struck a bank of sand, and the sea broke over the ship in such a way that we could not hope to have her hold manymoments without breaking into pieces. So we launched a boat. After we had been driven four or five miles, a mountainous wave struck us so HYPERLINK"/q/furiously" \o "ad.狂怒地;有力地" hard that it overturned the boat at once. Though I swam well but the waves were so strong that I was dashed against a rock with such force that it left me HYPERLINK"/q/senseless" senseless. Reading Tasks(20’)Passage One:Reading is thought to be a kind of conversation between the reader and the text. The reader puts questions, as it were, to the text and gets answers. In the light of these he puts further questions, and so on. For most of the time this “conversation” goes on below the level of consciousness. At time, however, we become aware of it. This is usually we are running into difficulties, when mismatch is occurring between expectations and meaning. When successful matching is being experienced, our questioning of the text continues at the unconscious level.Different people converse with the text differently. Some stay very close to the words on the page; others take off imaginatively from the words, interpreting, criticizing, analyzing and examining. The former represents a king of comprehension, which is written in the text. The latter represents higher levels of comprehension. The balance between these is important, especially for advanced readers. There is another conversation which from our point of view is equally important, and that is to do not with what is read but with how it is read. We call this a “process”conversation as opposed to a “content” conversation. It is concerned not with meaning but with the strategies we employ in reading. If we are advanced readers our ability to hold a content conversation with a text is usually pretty well developed. Not so our ability to hold a process conversation. It is precisely this kind of conversation that is of importance when we are seeking to develop our reading to meet the new demands being placed upon us by studying at a higher level.31. Reading as a kind of conversation between the reader and the text becomes conscious only when _______________________.A) the reader’s expectations agree with what is said in the text.B.) the reader has trouble understanding what the author says.C) the reader asks questions and gets answers.D) the reader understands a text very well.32. At a lower level of comprehension, readers tend to________________________.A) read a text slowlyB) read without thinking hardC) interpret a text in their own wayD.) concentrate on the meaning of words only.33. A “process” conversation has to do with ________________________.A.) the application of reading strategiesB) matching our expectations with the meaning of a textC) the development of our ability to check the detailsD) determining the main idea of a text.34. According to the passage, it is of great importance for readers at a higherlevel to maintain a balance between __________________________.A) conscious and unconscious levels of comprehensionB) the readers’ expectations and the meaning of a textC.) lower and higher level of comprehensionD) interpreting and criticizing a text35. If we want to develop our reading ability at an advanced level, we should___________.A.) learn to use different approaches in reading different textB) make our reading process more consciousC) pay more attention to the content of a textD) take a critical attitude towards the author’s ideaPassage Two:We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed ability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning. In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and tocommunicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work: it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.36. Reading Comprehension (24%)Passage 1Young Koreans are beginning to do it alone when it comes to finding a partner, though matchmaking is still the most common way for boy to meet girl.Professional matchmakers can make thousands of American dollars introducing eligible marriage partners to each other, but parents also play a part in the ritual by which young Koreans meet.In Confucian Korea, where marriage is regarded as more of a business contract than a sacred rite, the scene of the initial meeting is repeated hundreds of times a day in coffee shops in the main hotels around Seoul. The business of continuing the family lineage and keeping the bloodlines pure is often too important to be left to romance and chance encounters.Often, the girl will work out a system of discreet signals with her mother, where her parents can tell if she is interested. For example, if the girl orders an orange juice it might signal that she wants her parents to leave her alone with the boy, while a coffee indicates she wants them to stay.Sometimes the matchmaking is not always so formal, with the introductions being done by friends. But whether through friends or families, there is hardly a Korean man or woman in the country who has not gone through this process ——sometimes six or seven times.1. Some people even have to go through the matchmaking for more than one time.Passage 2Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them. Our purpose is for life.In some modern countries, it has been fashionable to think that by free education for all whether rich or poor, clever or stupid one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degrees, they refuse to do what they think “low” work. In fact, work with hands is thought to be d irty and shameful in such countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor. We can live without education, but we would die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and moved the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our towns. In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and, secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that is very bad to be ashamed of one’s work. Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.6. The author of this passage thinks that _________.A. education can settle all of the world’s problemsB. free education won't help to solve social problemsC. free education for all probably leads to a perfect worldD. all the social problems can’t be solved by education7. The author wants to prove that_________.A. our society needs all kinds of jobsB. our society needs free education for allC. a farmer is more important than a professorD. people with university degrees refuse to do what they think “low” work8. One can learn from the passage ______A. work with hands is dirty and shamefulB. work with hands is low workC. work with hands is the most importantD. we can’t regard work with hands as low work9. The purpose of education is_________.A. to choose the system of educationB. to prepare children mainly for their future workC. to build a perfect worldD. to let everyone receive education fit for him10. The passage mainly tells us about _______ of education.A. the meansB. the systemC. the valueD. the typePassage 3When I was about six years old, my mother came home one day and found that I had collected half a dozen babies of the neighborhood ---- all of them too young to walk ---- and had them sitting before me on the floor while I was teaching them to wave their arms. When she asked the explanation of this, I informed her that it was my school of dance. She was amused, and placing herself at the piano, she began to play for me. This school continued and became very popular. Later on, little girls of the neighborhood came and their parents paid me a small sum to teach them. This was the beginning of what afterwards proved a very lucrative (利润丰厚的) occupation. My mother took me to a famous ballet teacher, but his lesson did not please me. When the teacher told me to stand on my toes, I asked him why, and when he replied “Because it is beautiful,” I said that it was ugly and against nature and after the third lesson I left his class, never to return. This stiff and commonplace gymnastics which he called dancing only disturbed my dream. I dreamed of a different dance. I did not know just what it would be, but I was feeling out towards an invisible world into which I guessed I might enter if I found the key.My art was already in me when I was a little girl, and it was owing to the heroic and adventurous spirit of my mother that it was not stifled. I believed that whatever the child is going to do in life should be begun when it is very young. I wonder how many parents realize that by the so-called education they are giving their children, they are only driving them into the commonplace, and depriving them of any chance of doing anything beautiful or original.11. According to the narrator, she owed her success in art to ___________.A. the good education her parents gave herB. the support of her understanding and adventurous motherC. her inborn talentD. her ballet teacher12. The central idea of the passage is that __________.A. parents should try to discover the natural gift in their children and help to develop it while they are youngB. the so-called good education parents give their children only drives them into the commonplace and deprives them of any chance of doing anything originalC. mothers should be heroic and adventurousD. ballet is no good as a form of dancePart V. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centrePassage OneWhen we talk about intelligence, we do not mean the ability to get good scores on certain kinds of tests or even the ability to do well in school. By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving, especially in a new or upsetting situation. If we want to test intelligence, we need to find out how a person acts instead of how much he knows what to do. For instance, when in a new situation, an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him. He tries to find out all he can, and then he acts immediately and tries to do something about it. He probably isn't sure how it will all work out, but at least h e tries. And, if he can’t make things work out right, he doesn't feel ashamed that he failed; he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special outlook on life, a special feeling about life, and knows how he fits into it.If you look at children, you'll see great difference between what we call "bright" children and "not-bright" children. They are actually two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amount of intelligence. For example, the bright child really wants to find out about life - he tries to get in touch with everything around him. But, the unintelligent child keeps more to himself and his own dream-world; he seems to have a wall between him and life in general.61. According to this passage, intelligence is __________.A. the ability to study wellB. the ability to do well in schoolC. the ability to deal with lifeD. the ability to get high scores on some tests62. In a new situation, an intelligent person__________.A. knows more about what might happen to himB. is sure of the result he will getC. concentrates on what to do about the situationD. cares more about himself63. If an intelligent person failed, he would__________. A. try not to feel ashamed B. learn from his experiencesC. try to regret as much as possibleD. make sure what result he would get64. Bright children and not-bright children__________.A. are two different types of childrenB. are different mainly in their degree of clevernessC. have difference only in their way of thinkingD. have different knowledge about the world65. The author of this passage will probably continue to talk about __________.A. how to determine what intelligence isB. how education should be foundC. how to solve practical problemsD. how an unintelligent person should be taughtPassage TwoIf women are mercilessly exploited year, they have only themselves to blame.Because they tremble at the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion, they are always taken advantage of by the designers and the big stores.Clothes which have been worn only a few times have to be put aside because of the change of fashion. When you come to think of it ,only a woman is capable of standing in front of a wardrobe(衣柜)packed full of clothes and announcing sadly that she has nothing to wear.Changing fashions are nothing more than the intentional creation of waste. Many women spend vast sums of money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been worn. Women who cannot afford to throw away clothing in this way, waste hours of their time altering the dresses they have. Skirts are lengthened or shortened; neck lines are lowered or raised, and so on.No one can claim that the fashion industry contributes anything really important to society. Fashion designers are rarely concerned with vital things like warmth, comfort and durability(耐用). They are only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage of the fact that women will put up with any amount of discomfort, as long as they look right. There can hardly be a man who hasn’t at some time in his life smile at the sight of a woman shaking in a thin dress on a winter day, or delicately picking her way through deep snow in high-heeled shoes. When comparing men and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn are obvious. Do the constantly changing fashions of women’s clothes, one wonders, reflect basic qualities of inconstancy and instability? Men are too clever to let themselves be cheated by fashion designers. Do their unchanging styles of dress reflect basic qualities of stability and reliability? That is for you to decide.66. Designers and big stores always make money_________________A. by mercilessly exploiting women workers in the clothing industryB. because they are capable of predicting new fashionsC. by constantly changing the fashions in women’s clothingD. because they attach great importance to quality in women’s clothing67. To the writer, the fact that women alter their old-fashioned dresses is seenas______.A. a waste of moneyB. a waste of timeC. an expression of tasteD. an expression of creativity68. The writer would be less critical if fashion designers placed more stress on the___ _ of clothing.A. costB. appearanceC. comfortD. suitability69. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?A. New fashions in clothing are created for the commercial exploitation of womenB. The constant changes in women’s clothing reflect their strength of characterC. The fashion industry make an important contribution to societyD. Fashion designs should not be encouraged since they are only welcomed bywomen.70. By saying “the conclusions to be drawn are obvious” (lines 1-2, Para.4) thewriter means that ________.A. women’s inconstancy in their choice of clothing is often laughed atB. women are better able to put up with discomfortC. men are also exploited greatly by fashion designersD. men are more stable and reliable in characterPassage ThreeDo you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as: “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.You can’t change your energy cycle, bu t you can learn to make you life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning, but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point.Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. A void the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.71.If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably__________.A. he is a lazy personB. he refuses to follow his own energy cycleC. he is not sure when his energy is lowD. he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening72.Which of the following may lead to family quarrels according to the passage?A. Unawareness of energy cycles.B. Familiar monologuesC. A change in a family member’s energy cycleD. Soon she became his fiancée (未婚妻). The man was very poor while the girl was rich. The young man wanted to make her a present on her birthday. He wanted to buy something beautiful for her, but he had no idea how to do it, as he had very little money. The next morning he went to a shop. T here were many fine things there: gold watches, diamond… but all these things were too expensive. There was one thing he could not take his eyes off. It was a beautiful vase. That was a suitable present for his fiancée. He had been looking at the vase for half an hour when the manager of the shop noticed him. The young man looked so pale, sad and unhappy that the manager asked what had happened to him.The young man told him everything. The manager felt sorry for him and decided to help him. A bright idea struck him. The manager pointed to the corner of the shop. To his great surprise the young man saw a vase broken into many pieces. The manager said: "When the servant enters the room, he will drop it."On the birthday of his fiancée the young man was very excited.Everything happened as had been planned. The servant brought in the vase, and as he entered the room, he dropped it. There was horror on everybody's face. The young man was standing outside a restaurant and looking impatiently at his watch every few seconds."Take me over there," said the young lady. There were a lot of cars and buses in the square, so the taxi driver asked, "Are you afraid to cross the street?""Oh, no!" said the young lady. "But I promised that I would meet the young man for lunch at one o' clock, and it is now a quarter to two. If two of them come to a desert island, they say, at the end of the year both will claim they have made a million. It's a story which sums up "the trade". Objects, some precious, some whose only value is the old age, pass from hand to hand in search of home.Buying an antique is always an event. Collectors, bitten by the bug, develop a selective photographic memory. Point to any cherished object they own and they can tell you when they bought it, where, form whom and for how much. They may even remember what they ate for lunch that day and whether it rained.Britain is the world's biggest antique treasure store. Across the country, any day of the week, there may be several dozen auctions taking place. Even a small town will boast a couple of shops. In historic centres like Bath, the numbers may run into hundreds, not counting the stall holders packing specialists markets there, like Guinea Lane.In theory, the public's best chance of coming out ahead is in the sale rooms. They may be very famous, such as Sotheby's, Christies or Phillip's or lively provincial firms like Hobbs and Bath. Bidding is rapid and the auctioneer will try and process as many as 140 lots an hour. Given the pressure and the tensions, it's more than sensible to view the items to be sold in advance, either the previous day or before the sale begins. Then is the time to decide how far you are prepared to go and not to decide in the heat of battle.11. The joke is told to ___A_.A) reveal the nature of the trade of auctionB) play a trick on the antique dealersC) show that antique dealers often act against the lawD) show that antique dealers can find antique anywhere12.
