Passage 1
In a few areas of the western United States, a pine tree called the “limber pine” is under attack. If the insects that are attacking it continue to spread, then this tall, slender, cone-bearing tree may become extinct. The destruction would be unfortunate, for the limber pine is a beautiful, hardy tree that has lived there in peace for hundreds of years.
The enemies of the limber pine are the beetles called the “mountain pine beetles”. Adult mountain pine beetles lay eggs on the trunks of limber pines. The eggs hatch, and the baby beetles begin to feed on the inner layers of bark. As the baby beetles eat and grow, they dig long tunnels winding through the tree's trunk, leaving behind their jagged trails.
Awarding-winning nature photographer Robert Fletcher spends hours wandering through these fascinating tunnels of the beetles. He carefully examin es the damage, maps the length of the tunnel and counts the eggs. “It is like walking through a giant nut looked inside a layer upon layer of peanut
butter”, he says. “Sometimes the infestation is so severe that the tree cannot defend itself and will die.”
Mountain pine beetles cause the trunks of the pines to die, and the branches and needles turn reddish-brown, then gray. In fact, millions of trees have already succumbed to the attacks of these insects. The tree is dying by inches, similar to a person who has contracted some terrible disease.
1. What is the main topic of the passage?

B. False.
C. Not mentioned.

B. The tunnels keep spiders away.
C. The treetop becomes moldy.
D. The pines cannot save themselves.

A. An award-winning photographer likes to take pictures of gnarls.
B. A tree can die if beetles eat enough of it.
C. Beetles can change the color of pine tree needles.
D. Many pines have been destroyed by beetles.
解析:文章没有提到“喜欢拍树根的摄影师是一位屡获殊荣的自然

I have worked with thousands of people over the years as a psychotherapist, and I have an answer for those who want to be emotionally sufficient and fulfilled in their lives: creating a healthy 5 between care of
others and self care. It means getting out of the mindset that self 6 is selfish. Caregivers are often 7 to do that, they want to give, give, give. You might think it is noble to focus solely on others, but it's not. It is 8 If you're not taking care of yourself, you're not being of service to anyone.
Consider the metaphor of the oxygen mask on the airplane. They 9 you to put yours on first, before you help others. Why? Because if you don't save yourself first, you can't save anyone else. You're only 10 to be a better help to others when you are in a place of resources and strength. If you're 11 and weak, you are vulnerable and can't offer the same support.
The people I´ve worked with want to be of 12 ,of service in some way. I tell them to imagine their life as a big clock. Each part of the clock face represents an obligation in your life, such as work, family, community, and self-care. If one part of the clock takes up more space than others, the clock is 13 and not working at its best.
So, how do we 14 more balance? First, think about how 15 you are even being in all areas of your clock. Are you taking care of yourself every day in some way? Do you take enough time for yourself? 16 you spending time with your family and friends? Are you doing things that inspire and support you? Are you making time for your work and other obligations?
1. What is the main topic of the passage?

B. The benefits of caregiving.
C. Psychotherapy techniques.
D. Achieving emotional sufficiency.

C. it prevents selfishness.
D. it can be done quickly.
解析:文章提到,如果你不先救自己,你就无法救任何人。

你只有在处于资源和力量的地位时才能更好地帮助他人。

所以选项A是正确答案。

4. According to the passage, which statement is true?
A. Taking care of yourself is selfish.
B. Neglecting your own needs is noble.
C. Balancing obligations in life is important.
D. Helping others is the only goal in life.
解析:根据文中提到的“I tell them to imagine their life as a big clock. Each part of the clock face represents an obligation in your life, such as work, family, community, and self-care.
