Each one is carrying a small basket with a single egg inside. Soon more students join them-each one of them is also carrying a basket with an egg. The eggs in a basket are part of a new school program that helps young people understand that having a baby is a great duty.At the beginning of the program, the teacher puts the students in pairs-one girl and one boy. Each pair gets an egg, which they must take care of for two weeks. For those fourteen days, the students have to take care of the eggs as though they were real babies. Students whose eggs get broken have to start the two weeks all over again with a new egg.One person in each pair must have the egg with him or her at all times-twenty-four hours a day. At no time can they let the egg be out of sight. "If a teacher catches you without your egg," said one student, "she makes you go get it. They are really strict." The teachers also make the students spend half an hour each day sitting with the egg and just watching it. That can get pretty boring. But it's also something that parents spend a lot of time doing.Children say that the program has helped them understand the duties involved inhaving a child. Our reactions help to determine whether our child will repeat his behavior or whether he will do something different. This statement is a very important part of a principle of behavioral psychology. The principle states that a behavior is influenced or affected by how the environment ---- people, places and things ---- immediately responds to the behavior. Perhaps without realizing it, you have used this principle many times. On the occasion when you told your child what a good boy he was after he cleaned up his room, you used the principle. When you sent your child to his room for fighting with his brother, you used the principle. When I gave Kim a cookie after she started to cry, I used the principle. In each of these examples, a particular behavior occurred first ----cleaning up a room, fighting, and crying. In addition, there was a reaction to each behavior ---- the child was praised, sent to his room, or given a cookie. By these actions, we have influenced the previous behaviors and have helped to determine whether those behaviors will occur again in the future.(2) On what kind of principle is the lecture based?AA principle in chemistry.BA principle in behavioral psychology.CA principle in physics.DA principle in geology.正确答案是:B36、— _______ —Yes, I’ll be happy to cash it for you.ADo you need any cash?BAre you happy with the cash?CAre you happy to cash it for me?DMay I cash a traveler’s check here?正确答案是:D37、—Bring me the bill, please.— _______AYou are welcome.BPlease wait for a moment, sir.CI'll hurry up.DBe quick正确答案是:B38、We go to the cinema ______ a week.AoftenBonceCseldomDusually正确答案是:B39、If you _______ me, I shall be very grateful to you.Amust helpBwill helpCmay helpDneed help正确答案是:B40、Unemployment is not the _______— the real problem is the decline in public morality. People play different games in winter and summer.Games and sports often grow out of people's work and everyday activities. The Arabs use horses or camels in much of their everyday life; they use them in their sports, too. Some sports are so interesting that people everywhere go in for them. Football, for example, has spread around the world. Swimming is popular in all countries near the sea or in those with many rivers. Some sports or games go back to thousands of years ago, like running or jumping. Chinese boxing, for example, has a very long history. But basketball and volleyball are rather new. Neither one is a hundred years old yet. People are inventing new sports or games all the time.People from different countries may not be able to understand each other, but aftera game they often become good friends. Sports help to train a person's character. One learns to fight hard but fight fair, to win without pride and to lose with grace.(4)、From this passage we can see that according to the author sports and games are significant to our life in many respects.A错误B正确正确答案是:B2、Albert Einstein had a great effect on science and history, greater than what only a few other men have achieved. An American university president once commented that Einstein had created a new outlook, a new view of the universe. It may be some time before the average mind understands fully the identity of time and space and so on-but even ordinary men understand now that the universe is something larger than ever thought before.By 1914 the young Einstein had gained world fame. He accepted the offer to become a professor at the Prussian Academy of Science in Berlin. He had few duties, little teaching and unlimited opportunities for study, but soon his peace and quiet were broken by the First World War.Einstein hated violence. The misery of war affected him deeply, and he sat unhappily in his office doing little. He lost interest in his research. Only when peace came in 1918 was he able to get back to work.In the years following World War I honors were increasingly heaped on him. He became the head of the Kaiser Whihem Institute of Theoretical Physics. In 1921 he won the Noble Prize, and he was honored in Germany until the rise of Nazism when he was driven from Germany because he was a Jew.(1)、The main idea of Paragraph 1 is the change in human thought produced by Einstein. A错误B正确正确答案是:B3、In 1920, barely out of his teens, Alfred Hitchcock went to work for an American film company which had opened a studio in Islington, London. His first job at the studio was writing captions (脚本)for silent movies. Within two years, he was writing scripts(剧本)and working as an assistant director. For the rest of the 1920s, Hitchcock worked on one film after another in Britain and Germany. Filming was often a rough-and-ready(匆忙做成的)affair and the assistant director was required to step in and plug gaps. A cameraman went missing, Hitchcock became a cameraman. A scene needed rewriting, Hitchcock rewrote it. Someone needed to be in charge of money when the film crew was on location, Hitchcock looked after the money. At the same time, this being the era of silent movies, Hitchcock was learning the language of cinema: telling a story-not through dialogue, but through visual images(视觉影象). This led to his success later. When he began to direct his own films, first in Britain and later in Hollywood, he was determined to make films that held the audience's attention and kept tension(紧张感). He succeeded. Hitchcock's ability to put you on the edge of your seat makes him one of the greatest makers of suspense(悬念)movies.(5)、He had taken up different jobs before he succeeded.A错误B正确正确答案是:B4、In 1920, barely out of his teens, Alfred Hitchcock went to work for an American film company which had opened a studio in Islington, London. Then everything changed. During the Fourth of July weekend, residents woke up one morning to find that the lake had disappeared. Some people didn't believe what they were seeing. They looked again, but to their amazement they found they had been right the first time. The lake was simply no longer there. In its place was a big muddy hole, 30 feet deep. It was as if the lake had been a giant bathtub and someone had pulled the plug. The lake's owner, Joseph Unanue, did indeed pull the plug. That's exactly what happened. The dam that held back the water to form the lake was falling apart, sogovernment officials ordered him to repair it. They issued him a permit to lower the dam level "five feet or more."He did much more. Mr. Unanue found repairs to the dam would cost $100,000. He didn't want to spend that much, so he opened the dam and lowered the water level until the lake was completely emptied. People living above the dam ended up with no lake. People living below the dam ended up with tons of mud and lots of dead fish. Everyone involved was angry with Mr. Unanue.Area residents believed Mr. Unanue acted out of spite(恶意). They said he wanted to get back at them because the town wouldn't let him develop an amusement park on the lakeshore. When he couldn't build his park, he just went away and took his lake with him.(2)、The lake was compared to a bathtub because it could be emptied out.A错误B正确正确答案是:B。

东北农业大学成人教育学院考试题签大学英语Ⅳ(B)一、阅读题(每题2分,共40分)Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questionsor unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A. B. C. and D.You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheetwith a single line through the center.Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:If women are mercilessly exploited year after year, they have only themselves to blame. Because they tremble at the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion, they are always taken advantage of by the designers and the big stories. Clothes, which have been worn only a few tunes, have to be put aside because of the change of fashion. When you come to think of it, only a woman is capable of standing in front of a wardrobe packed full of clothes and announcing sadly that she has nothing to wear.Changing fashions are nothing more than the intentional creation of waste. Many women spend vast sums of money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been worn. Women who cannot afford to throw away clothing in this way, waste hours of their time altering the dresses they have. Skirts are lengthened or shortened: necklines are lowered or raised, and so on.No one can claim mat the fashion industry contributes anything really important to society. Fashion designers are rarely concerned with vital things like warmth, comfort and durability. They are only interested in outward appearance and they lake advantage of the fact that women will put up with any amount of discomfort, as long as they look right. There can hardly be a man who hasn't at some lime in his life smiled at the sight of a woman shaking in a thin dress on a winter day, or delicately picking her way through deep snow in high--heeled shoes. When comparing men and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn are obvious. Do the constantly changing fashion of women's clothes, one wonders, reflect basic qualities of inconstancy and instability? Men are too clever to let themselves be cheated by fashion designers. Do their unchanging styles of dress reflect basic qualities of stability and reliability? That is for you to decide.1. What is the tone of the passage?A CriticizingB PraisingC Matter-of-factD Enthusiastic2. According to the author, fashion is a thing that ____.A is neither a waste of money nor a waste of timeB contributes something really important to the societyC is practical注:装订线内禁止答题,装订线外禁止有姓名和其他标记。

Although he expected some r eaction, the response he received was amazing—holiday cards addressed to him came pouring back from the people who had never met norheard of him. The great majority of those who returned a card never inquired into the identity of the unknown professor. They received his holiday greeting card, and they automatically sent one in return. This study showsthe action of one of the most powerful of the weapons of influence aroundus—the rule for reciprocation. The rule says that we should try to repay,in kind, what another person has provided us. If a woman does us a favor,we should do her one in return; if a man sends us a birthday present, weshould remember his birthday with a gift of our own; if a couple invitesus to a party, we should be sure to invite them to one of ours. By virtueof the reciprocity rule, then, we are obligated to the future repayment offavors, gifts, invitations, and the like. So typical is it for indebtednessto accompany the receipt of such things that a term like “much obliged” has become a synonym for “thank you,” not only in the English languagebut in others as well. The impressive aspect of the rule for reciprocation and the sense ofobligation that goes with it is its pervasiveness in human culture. It isso widespread that after intensive study, sociologists such as Alvin Goldener can report that there is no human society that does not subscribeto the rule.PART V READING COMPREHENSIONSECTION A MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONSIn this section there are three passages followed by ten multiple choice questions. For each multiple choice question, there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that you think is the best answer and mark your answers on ANSWERSHEET TWO.PASSAGE ONE(1)The earliest settlers came to the North American continent to establishcolonies that were free from the controls that existed in European societies. Theywanted to escape the controls placed on their lives by kings and governments, priests and churches, noblemen and aristocrats. The historic decisions made by those firstsettlers have had a profound effect on the shaping of the American character. By limiting the power of the government and the churches and eliminating a formal aristocracy, they created a climate of freedom where the emphasis was on the individual. Individualfreedom is probably the most basic of all the American values. By freedom, Americansmean the desire and the ability of all individuals to control their own destiny without outside interference from the government, a ruling noble class, the church, or any other organized authority.(2) There is, however, a price to be paid for this individual freedom: self-reliance. It means that Americans believe they should stand on their own feet, achieving both financial and emotional independence from their parents as early aspossible, usually by age 18 or 21.(3) A second important reason why immigrants have traditionally been drawn to the United States is the belief that everyone has a equal chance to enter a race and succeed in the game. Because titles of nobility were forbidden in the Constitution, no formal class system developed in the .(4) There is, however, a price to be paid for this equality of opportunity:competition. If much of life is seen as race, then a person must run the race in orderto succeed; a person must compete with others. The pressures of competition in the lifeof an American begin in childhood and continue until retirement from work. In fact, any group of people who does not compete successfully does not fit into the mainstream of American life as well as those who do.(5) A third reason why immigrants have traditionally come to the United Statesis to have a better life. Because of its abundant natural resources, the United States appeared to be a “land of plenty where millions could come to seek their fortunes. The phrase “going from rags to riches” became a slogan for the American dream. Many people did achieve material success. Material wealth became a value to the Americanpeople, and it also became an accepted measure of social status.(6) Americans pay a price, however, for their material wealth: hard work. Hardwork has been both necessary and rewarding for most Americans throughout their history. In some ways, material possessions are seen as evidence of people’s abilities. Barry Goldwater, a candidate for the presidency in 1964, said that most poor people are poor because they deserve to be. Most Americans would find this a harsh statement, but many might think there was some truth in it.(7) These basic values do not tell the whole story of the American character. Rather, they should be thought of as themes, as we continue to explore more facets of the American character and how it affects life in the United States.41. seems to suggest that __________.A. Americans are born with a sense of competitionB. the pressure of competition begins when one starts workC. successful competition is essential in American societyD. competition results in equality of opportunities42. Which of the following methods does the author mainly use in explaining AmericanvaluesA. ComparisonD. Cause and effectC. DefinitionD. Process analysisPASSAGE TWO(1) The Nobels are the originals, of course. Alfred Nobel, the man w ho invented deadly explosives, decided to try and do something good with all the money he earned, and gave prizes to people who made progress in literature, science, economics and —perhaps most importantly—peace.(2) Not all rewards are as noble as the Nobels. Even though most countries havea system of recognizing, honoring and rewarding people who have done something goodin their countries, there are now hundreds of awards and award ceremonies for all kinds of things.(3)The Oscars are probably the most famous, a time for the (mostly) American film industry to tell itself how good it is and an annual opportunity for lots of big stars to give each other awards and make tearful speeches. As well as that there are alsothe Golden Globes, evidently for the same thing.(4) But it’s not only films---there are also Grammies, Brits, the Mercury Prizeand the MTV for music. In Britain, a writer who wins the Booker Prize can expect tosee their difficult, literary novel hit the bestseller lists and compete with theDa Vinci Code for popularity. The Turner Prize is an award for British contemporaryartists—each year it causes controversy by apparently giving lots of money to artists who do things like displaying their beds, putting animals in glass cases or—this year —building a garden shed.(5) Awards don’t only exist for arts. There are now awards for Sports Personalityof the Year, for European Footballer of the Year and World Footballer of the Year. This seems very strange—sometimes awards can be good to give recognition to peoplewho deserve it, or to help people who don’t make a lot of money carry on their work without worrying about finances, but professional soccer players these days certainly aren’t short of cash!(6) Many s mall towns and communities all over the world also have their own award ceremonies, for local writers or artists, or just for people who have graduated from high school or, got a university degree. Even the British Council has its own awardsfor“Innovation in English Language Teaching”.(7) Why have all these awards and ceremonies appeared recently Shakespeare neverwon a prize, nor did Leonardo Da Vinci or Adam Smith or Charles Dickens.(8) It would be possible to say, however, that in the past, scientists and artists could win“patronage”form rich people—a king or a lord would give the artistsor scientists money to have them paint their palaces or help them develop new ways ofmaking money. With the change in social systems across the world, this no longer happens.A lot of scientific research is now either funded by the state or by private companies.(9)Perhaps award ceremonies are just the most recent phase of this process.(10) However, there is more to it than that. When a film wins an Oscar, manymore people will go and see it, or buy the DVD. When a writer wins the Nobel Prize, many more people buy their books. When a group wins the MTV awards, the ceremony isseen by hundreds of thousands of people across the world. The result The group sellslots more records.(11) Most award ceremonies are now sponsored by big organizations or companies. This means that it is not only the person who wins the award who benefits---but alsothe sponsors. The MTV awards, for example, are great for publicizing not only music, but also MTV itself!(12) On the surface, it seems to be a“Win-win”situation, with everyone being happy, but let me ask you a question—how far do you think that publicity and marketing are winning here, and how much genuine recognition of achievement is taking place43. What is the author’s tone when he mentions awards such as the Oscars, the GoldenGlobes and Grammies (Paras. 3 & 4)A. Amused.B. Appreciative.C. Sarcastic.D. Serious.44. According to Para. 4, what would happen to award winning writersA. They would enjoy a much larger readership.B. They would turn to popular novel writing.C. They would continue non-fiction writing.D. It can be concluded from Para. 12 that the author thinks awards ________.A. promote market rather than achievementsB. do good to both market and popularityC. help those who are really talentedD. are effective in making people popularPASSAGE THREE(1) Knowing that Mrs. Mallard suffered from a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband’s death.(2) It was her sister Josephine who told her, in broken sentences. Her husband’s friend Richards was there, too. It was he who had been in the newspaper office whennews of the railroad disaster was received, with Brently Mallard’s name leading thelist of “killed”. He had only taken the time to assure himself of its truth by a second telegram.(3) She wept at once, in her sister’s arms. When the storm of sadness had spentitself she went away to her room alone. She would have no one follow her.(4) There stood, facing the open window, a comfortable armchair. Into this she sank, pressed down by a physical exhaustion that haunted her body and seemed to reach intoher soul.(5) She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees. The delicious breath of rain was in the air. The notes of a distant song which someone was singingreached her, and countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves).(6) There were patches of blue sky showing here and there through the clouds thathad met and piled above the other in the west facing her window.(7) She sat with her head thrown back upon the cushion of the chair, quite motionless, except when a sob came up into her throat and shook her, as a child who has cried itselfto sleep continues to sob in its dreams.(8) She was young, with a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression and evena certain strength. But now there was a dull stare in her eyes, whose gaze was fixedaway off yonder on one of those patches of blue sky. It was not a glance of reflection, but rather indicated a suspension of intelligent thought.(9) There was something coming to her and she was waiting for it, fearfully. What was it She did not know; it was too subtle and elusive to name. But she felt it, creeping out of the sky, reaching toward her through the sounds, the scents, the color that filled the air.(10) Now her bosom rose and fell tumultuously. She was beginning to recognize this thing that was approaching to possess her, and she was striving to beat it back withher will-as powerless as her two white slender hands would have been.(11) When s he abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips. She said it over and over under her breath: "Free, free, free!" The vacant stare and the look of terror that had followed it went from her eyes. They stayed keen andbright. Her pulses beat fast, and the coursing blood warmed and relaxed every inch ofher body.(12) She knew that she would weep again when she saw the kind, tender hands folded in death; the face that had never looked save with love upon her, fixed and gray anddead. But she saw beyond that bitter moment a long procession of years to come thatwould belong to her absolutely. And she opened and spread her arms out to them in welcome.(13) There would be no one to live for her during those coming years; she wouldlive for herself. There would be no powerful will bending her in that blind persistence with which men and women believe they have a right to impose a private will upon afellow-creature.(14) And yet she had loved him-sometimes. Often she had not. What did it matter! What could love, the unsolved mystery, count for in face of this possession of self-assertion, which she suddenly recognized as the strongest impulse of her being!(15)“Free! Body and soul free!” she kept whispering.(16) Josephine was kneeling before the closed door with her lips to the keyhole, imploring for admission. "Louise, open the door! I beg; open the door-you will makeyourself ill. What are you doing, Louise For heaven's sake open the door."(17) "Go away. I am n ot making myself ill." No; she was drinking in a very elixir(长生不老药) of life through that open window.(18) Her fancy was running riot along those days ahead of her. Spring days, andsummer days, and all sorts of days that would be her own. She breathed a quick prayerthat life might be long. It was only yesterday she had thought with a shudder that life might be long.(19) She arose at length and opened the door to her sister's importunities. Therewas a feverish triumph in her eyes, and she carried herself unwittingly like a goddess of Victory. She clasped her sister's waist, and together they descended the stairs.Richards stood waiting for them at the bottom.(20) Some one was opening the front door with a latchkey. It was Brently Mallardwho entered, a little travel-stained, composedly carrying his gripsack and umbrella. He had been far from the scene of accident, and did not even know there had been one.He stood amazed at Josephine's piercing cry; at Richards' quick motion to screen himfrom the view of his wife.(21) But Richards was too late.(22) When t he doctors came they said she had died of heart disease-of joy that kills.48. While most of these fans knew a lot about the songs of Elvis, few of them knew the story of how Elvis had his first record which was for his mother. He paid four dollars to a small Memphis recording shop, and recorded two songs. The songs were "My Happiness" and "That's Where Your Heartaches Begin". Sam Philips, who owned the shop where Elvis made the record, liked Presley's songs. He said he would call him some day. About a year later, Philips did call and ask him to cut a record. This first record had "Blue Moon of Kentucky"on one side, and "That's All Right, Mama"on the other.正确答案:第12题,Instructions:建议你在30分钟内,根据下面所给的题目和提纲用英语写出一篇不少于80词的短文。

But many of them are going dark, 27 by more practical, but less romantic, LEDs (发光二极管).Changing building codes, evolving tastes, and the high cost of maintaining those wonderful old signs have businesses embracing LEDs, which are energy 28 , but still carry great cost. "To me, neon represents memories of the past," says photographer Sharon Blance, whose series Hong Kong Neon celebrates the city's famous signs. "Looking at the signs now I get a feeling of amazement, mixed with sadness."Building a neon sign is an art practiced by 29 trained on the job to mold glass tubes into 30 shapes and letters. They fill these tubes with gases that glow when 31 . Neon makes orange, while other gases make yellow or blue. It takes many hours to craft a single sign.Blance spent a week in Hong Kong and 32 more than 60 signs; 22 of them appear in the series that capture the signs lighting up lonely streets—an 33 that makes it easy to admire their colors and craftsmanship. Answer the questions by marking the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2.New Jersey School District Eases Pressure on Students—Baring an Ethnic DivideA) This fall, David Aderhold, the chief of a high-achieving school district near Princeton, New Jersey, sent parents an alarming 16-page letter. The school district, he said, was facing a crisis. Its students were overburdened and stressed out, having to cope with too much work and too many demands. In the previous school year, 120 middle and high school students were recommended for mental health assessments and 40 were hospitalized. And on a survey administered by the district, students wrote things like, "I hate going to school," and "Coming out of 12 years in this district, I have learned one thing: that a grade, a percentage or even a point is to be valued over anything else."B) With his letter, Aderhold inserted West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District into a national discussion about the intense focus on achievement at elite schools, and whether it has gone too far. At follow-up meetings, he urged parents to join him in advocating a "whole child" approach to schooling that respects "social-emotional development" and "deep and meaningful learning" over academics alone. The alternative, he suggested, was to face the prospect of becoming another Palo Alto, California, where outsize stress on teenage students is believed to have contributed to a number of suicides in the last six years.C) But instead of bringing families together, Aderhold's letter revealed a divide in the district, which has 9,700 students, and one that broke down roughly along racial lines. On one side are white parents like Catherine Foley, a former president of the Parent-Teacher-Student Association at her daughter'smiddle school, who has come to see the district's increasingly pressured atmosphere as opposed to learning. "My son was in fourth grade and told me, 'I'm not going to amount to anything because I have nothing to put on my resume,'" she said. On the other side are parents like Mike Jia, one of the thousands of Asian-American professionals who have moved to the district in the past decade, who said Aderhold's reforms would amount to a "dumbing down" of his children's education. "What is happening here reflects a national anti-intellectual trend that will not prepare our children for the future," Jia said.D) About 10 minutes from Princeton and an hour and a half from New York City, West Windsor and Plainsboro have become popular bedroom communities for technology entrepreneurs, researchers and engineers, drawn in large part by the public schools. From the last three graduating classes, 16 seniors were admitted to MIT. It produces Science Olympiad winners, classically trained musicians and students with perfect SAT scores.E) The district has become increasingly popular with immigrant families from China, India and Korea. This year, 65 percent of its students are Asian-American, compared with 44 percent in 2007. Many of them are the first in their families born in the United States. They have had a growing influence on the district. Asian-American parents are enthusiastic supporters of the competitive instrumental music program. They have been huge supporters of the district's advanced mathematics program, which once began in the fourth grade but will now start in the sixth. The change to the program, in which 90 percent of the participating students are Asian-American, is one of Aderhold's reforms.F) Asian-American students have been eager participants in a state program that permits them to take summer classes off campus for high school credit, allowing them to maximize the number of honors and Advanced Placement classes they can take, another practice that Aderhold is limiting this school year. With many Asian-American children attending supplementary instructional programs, there is a perception among some white families that the elementary school curriculum is being sped up to accommodate them.G) Both Asian-American and white families say the tension between the two groups has grown steadily over the past few years, as the number of Asian families has risen. But the division has become more obvious in recent months as Aderhold has made changes, including no-homework nights, an end to high school midterms and finals, and an initiative that made it easier to participate in the music program.H) Jennifer Lee, professor of sociology at the University of California, Irvine, and an author of the Asian American Achievement Paradox, says misunderstanding between first-generationAsian-American parents and those who have been in this country longer are common. What white middle-class parents do not always understand, she said, is how much pressure recent immigrants feelto boost their children into the middle class. "They don't have the same chances to get their children internships (实习职位) or jobs at law firms," Lee said. "So what they believe is that their children must excel and beat their white peers in academic settings so they have the same chances to excel later. "I) The issue of the stresses felt by students in elite school districts has gained attention in recent years as schools in places like Newton, Massachusetts, and Palo Alto have reported a number of suicides. West Windsor-Plainsboro has not had a teenage suicide in recent years, but Aderhold, who has worked in the district for seven years and been chief for the last three years, said he had seen troubling signs. In a recent art assignments, a middle school student depicted (描绘) an overburdened child who was being scolded for earning an A, rather than an A+ , on a math exam. In the image, the mother scolds the student with the words, "Shame on you!" Further, he said, the New Jersey Education Department has flagged at least two pieces of writing on state English language assessments in which students expressed suicidal thoughts.J) The survey commissioned by the district found that 68 percent of high school honor and Advanced Placement students reported feeling stressed about school "always or most of the time." "We need to bring back some balance," Aderhold said. "You don't want to wait until it's too late to do something. "K) Not all public opinion has fallen along racial lines. Karen Sue, the Chinese-American mother of a fifth-grader and an eighth-grader, believes the competition within the district has gotten out of control. Sue, who was born in the United States to immigrant parents, wants her peers to dial it back. "It's become an arms race, an educational arms race," she said. "We all want our kids to achieve and be successful. The question is, at what cost"36. Aderhold is limiting the extra classes that students are allowed to take off campus.37. White and Asian-American parents responded differently to Aderhold's appeal.38. Suicidal thoughts have appeared in some students' writings.39. Aderhold's reform of the advanced mathematics program will affect Asian-American students most.40. Aderhold appealed for parents' support in promoting an all-round development of children, instead of focusing only on their academic performance.41. One Chinese-American parent thinks the competition in the district has gone too far.42. Immigrant parents believe that academic excellence will allow their children equal chances to succeed in the future.43. Many businessmen and professionals have moved to West Windsor and Plainsboro because of the public schools there.44. A number of students in Aderhold's school district were found to have stress-induced mental health problems.45. The tension between Asian-American and white families has increased in recent years.Section CDirections: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 46 and 50 are based on the following passage. For thousands of years, people have known that the best way to understand a concept is to explain it to someone else. "While we teach, we learn," said Roman philosopher Seneca. Now scientists are bringing this ancient wisdom up-to-date. They're documenting why teaching is such a fruitful way to learn, and designing innovative ways for young people to engage in instruction.Researchers have found that students who sign up to tutor others work harder to understand the material, recall it more accurately and apply it more effectively. Student teachers score higher on tests than pupils who're learning only for their own sake. But how can children, still learning themselves, teach others" One answer: They can tutor younger kids. Some studies have found that first-born children are more intelligent than their later-born siblings (兄弟姐妹). This suggests their higher IQs result from the time they spend teaching their siblings. Now educators are experimenting with ways to apply this model to academic subjects. They engage college undergraduates to teach computer science to high school students, who in turn instruct middle school students on the topic. But the most cutting-edge tool under development is the "teachable agent"—a computerized character who learns, tries, makes mistakes and asks questions just like a real-world pupil. Computer scientists have created an animated (动画的) figure called Betty's Brain, who has been "taught" about environmental science by hundreds of middle school students. Student teachers are motivated to help Betty master certain materials. While preparing to teach, they organize their knowledge and improve their own understanding. And as they explain the information to it, they identify problems in their own thinking.Feedback from the teachable agents further enhances the tutors' learning. The agents' questions compel student tutors to think and explain the materials in different ways, and watching the agent solve problems allows them to see their knowledge put into action.Above all, it's the emotions one experiences in teaching that facilitate learning. Student tutors feel upset when their teachable agents fail, but happy when these virtual pupils succeed as they derive pride and satisfaction from someone else's accomplishment.46. What are researchers rediscovering through their studies"A) Seneca's thinking is still applicable today.B) Better learners will become better teachers.C) Human intelligence tends to grow with age.D) Philosophical thinking improves instruction.47. What do we learn about Betty's Brain"A) It is a character in a popular animation.B) It is a teaching tool under development.C) It is a cutting-edge app in digital games.D) It is a tutor for computer science students.48. How does teaching others benefit student tutors"A) It makes them aware of what they are strong at.B) It motivates them to try novel ways of teaching.C) It helps them learn their academic subjects better.D) It enables them to better understand their teachers.49. What do students do to teach their teachable agents"A) They motivate them to think independently.B) They ask them to design their own questions.C) They encourage them to give prompt feedback.D) They use various ways to explain the materials.50. What is the key factor that eases student tutors' learning"A) Their sense of responsibility.B) Their emotional involvement.C) The learning strategy acquired.D) The teaching experience gained.Passage TwoQuestions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage.A new batch of young women—members of the so-called Millennial (千禧的) generation—has been entering the workforce for the past decade. At the starting line of their careers, they are better educated than their mothers and grandmothers had been—or than their young male counterparts are now. But when they look ahead, they see roadblocks to their success. They believe that women are paid less than men for doing the same job. They think it's easier for men to get top executive jobs than it is for them. And they assume that if and when they have children, it will be even harder for them to advance in their careers. While the public sees greater workplace equality between men and women now than it did 20-30 years ago, most believe more change is needed. Among Millennial women, 75% say this country needs to continue making changes to achieve gender equality in the workplace, compared with 57% of Millennial men. Even so, relatively few young women (15%) say they have been discriminated against at work because of their gender. As Millennial women come of age they share many of the same views and values about work as their male counterparts. They want jobs that provide security and flexibility, and they place relatively little importance on high pay. At the same time, however, young working women are less likely than men to aim at top management jobs: 34% say they're not interested in becoming a boss or top manager; only 24% of young men say the same. The gender gap on this question is even wider among working adults in their 30s and 40s, when many women face the trade-offs that go with work and motherhood. These findings are based on a new Pew Research Center survey of 2,002 adults, including 810 Millennials (ages 18-32), conducted Oct. 7-27, 2013. The survey finds that, in spite of the dramatic gains women have made in educational attainment and labor force participation in recent decades, young women view this as a man's world—just as middle-aged and older women do.51. What do we learn from the first paragraph about Millennial women starting their careers"A) They can get ahead only by striving harder.B) They expect to succeed just like Millennial men.C) They are generally quite optimistic about their future.D) They are better educated than their male counterparts.52. How do most Millennial women feel about their treatment in the workplace"A) They are the target of discrimination.B) They find it satisfactory on the whole.C) They think it needs further improving.D) They find their complaints ignored.53. What do Millennial women value most when coming of age"A) A sense of accomplishment.B) Job stability and flexibility.C) Rewards and promotions.D) Joy derived from work.54. What are women in their 30s and 40s concerned about"A) The welfare of their children.B) The narrowing of the gender gap.C) The fulfillment of their dreams in life.D) The balance between work and family.55. What conclusion can be drawn about Millennial women from the 2013 survey"A) They still view this world as one dominated by males.B) They account for half the workforce in the job market.C) They see the world differently from older generations.D) They do better in work than their male counterparts.Part IV Translation (30 minutes)Directions:For this part, you are allowed 30minutes to translate a passage from Chinesein toEnglish. Each passage is followed by five questions or statements. Choose the best answer to each question or decide T/F for each statement.Passage OneMany people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go in to their offices or schools every day by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening. One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one’s own. Then, in the country one can really get away from the noise and hurry of busy working lives. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time intrains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend one’s free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has got the reward together with those who have shared the secret of Nature. Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance—halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight’s (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.(1) Which of the following statements is NOT true _(A) People who love Nature prefer to live outside the city.(B) All the people who work in London prefer to live in the country.(C) Some people enjoying city life prefer to work and live inside London.(D) Many nature lovers, though working in London, prefer to live outside the city.(2) With the same money needed for________, one can buy a little house with a garden in the country.(A) getting a small flat with a garden(B) having a small flat with a garden(C) renting a small flat without a garden(D) buying a small flat without a garden(3) When the garden is in blossom, that one ________ has been rewarded.(A) living in the country(B) having spent time working in the garden(C) having a garden of his own(D) having been digging, planting and watering(4) People who think happiness lies in the city life would feel that _______ if they had to live outside London.(A) their life was meaningless(B) their life was invaluable(C) they didn’t deserve a happy life(D) hey were not worthy of their happy life(5) The underlined phrase get away from in the 3rd paragraph refers to ________.(A) deal(B) do away with(C) escape from(D) prevent away3.Passage TwoThere are three kinds of goals: short—term, medium—range and long —term goals. Short—term goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, long—term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solid short—term goals. Upon completing our short—term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short—term goals that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short—term goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase. Long—term goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static thing. We should never allow a long—term goal to limit us or our course of action.(1) Our long—term goals mean a lot ________.(A) If we cannot reach solid short—term goals(B) If we complete the short—term goals(C) if we have dreams of the future(D) if we put forward some plans(2) New short—term goals are built upon ________.(A) a daily basis(B) your achievement in a week(C) current activities(D) the goals that have been completed(3) When we complete each step of our goals, ________.(A) we will win final success(B) we are overwhelmed(C) we should build up confidence of success(D) we should have strong desire for setting new goals(4) What is the main idea of this passage(A) Life is a dynamic thing.(B) We should set up long—term goals.(C) Different kinds of goals in life.(D) The limitation of long—term goals.(5) Which of the following statements is wrong according to the passage(A) The long—term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solid(B) The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals.(C) Life is a static thing, thus we should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action.(D) We should often add new short-term goals to those which have been completed.4.Passage Three“Tear’ em apart!”“Kill the fool!”“Murder the referee(裁判)!”There are common remarks one may hear at various sporting events. At the time they are made, they may seem innocent enough. But let’s not kid ourselves. They have been known to influence behavior in such a way as to lead to real bloodshed. Volumes have been written about the way words affect us. It has been shown that words having certain connotations(含义) may cause us to react in ways quite foreign to what we consider to be our usual humanistic behavior. I see the term “opponent”as one of those words. Perhaps the time has come to delete it from sports terms. The dictionary meaning of the term “opponent” is “adversary”“enemy” and “one who opposes your interests”. Thus, when a player meets an opponent, he or she may tend to take every action, no matter how gross it is. I recall an incident in a handball game when a referee refused a players request for a time out for a glove change because he did not consider them wet enough. The player proceeded to rub his gloves across his wet T—shirt and then exclaimed, “Are they wet enough now”In the heat of battle, players have been observed to throw themselves across the court without considering the consequences that such a move might have on anyone in their way. I have also witnessed a player reaching to his opponent’s intentional and illegal blocking by deliberately hitting him with the ball as hard as he could during the course of play. Off the court, they are good friends. Does that make any sense It certainly gives proof of a court attitude which departs from normal behavior. Therefore, I believe it is time we elevated(提升) the game to the level where it belongs, thereby setting an example to the rest of the sporting world. Replacing the term “opponent” with “associate” could be an ideal way to start. The dictionary meaning of the term “associate” is “colleague”“friend” and “companion”. Reflect a moment! You may soon see and possibly feel the difference in your reaction to the term “associate” rather than “opponent”.(1) Which of the following statements best expresses the author's view(A) The words people use can influence their behavior.(B) Unpleasant words in sports are often used by foreign athletes.(C) Aggressive behavior in sports can have serious consequences.(D) Unfair judgments by referees will lead to violence on the sports field.(2) Gross actions are taken during games because the players_______.(A) are too eager to win(B) treat their rivals as enemies(C) are usually short—tempered and easily offended(D) cannot afford to be polite in fierce competitions(3) What did the handball player do when he was not allowed a time out to change his gloves(A) He angrily hit the referee with a ball(B) He wet his gloves by rubbing them across his T—shirt.(C) He claimed that referee was unfair(D) He refused to continue the game(4) What is the meaning of the word “court” (Para. 4)(A) please where trials are held(B) official residence of a sovereign(C) space marked for sports(D) courtyard(5) The author hopes to have the current situation in sports improved by ______.(A) regulating the relationship between players and referees(B) calling on players to use clean language in the court(C) raising the referee’s sense of responsibility(D) changing the attitude of players on the sports field5.Passage FourThe French word “renaissance” means rebirth. It was first used in 1855 by the historian Jules Michelet in his History of France, and then adopted byhistorians of culture, by art historians, and eventually by music historians, all of whom applied it to European culture during the 150 years spanning 1450-1600. The concept of rebirth was appropriate to this period of European history because of the renewed interest in ancient Greek and Roman culture that began in Italy and then spread throughout Europe. Scholars and artists of this period wanted to restore the learning and ideals of the classical civilizations of Greece and Rome. To these scholars this meant a return to human. Fulfillment in life became a desirable goal, and expressing the entire range of human emotions and enjoying the pleasures of the senses were no longer frowned on. Artists and writers now turned to religious subject matter and sought to make their works understandable and appealing. These changes in outlook deeply affected the musical culture of the Renaissance period —how people thought about music as well as the way music was composed and experienced. They could see the architectural monuments, sculptures, plays, and poems that were being rediscovered, but they could not actually hear ancient music —although they could read the writings of classical philosophers, poets, essayists, and music theorists that were becoming available in translation. They learned about the power of ancient music to move the listener and wondered why modern music did not have the same effect. For example, the influential religious leader Bernardino Cirillo expressed disappointment with the music of his time. He urged musicians to follow the example of the sculptors, painters, architects, and scholars who had rediscovered ancient art and literature. The musical Renaissance in Europe was more a general cultural movement and state of mind than a specific set of musical techniques. run fast, jump high and shoot well. All these things are true, but there are other truths about Michael that are not so easily seen:his understanding of teamwork, his competitive spirit and his love for the game.It is these truths that form the deepest connection between Michael and me.After coaching him for eight seasons,I still wonder at Michael's love for the game that moves us,even in practice games.I mean,he never takes a day off.One thing about Michael is that he takes nothing about his game for granted. When he first came to the NBA back in 1984,his outside shooting was not perfect, and he began to practice shooting hundreds of shots each day.In the end,he became a real three-point shooter.Playing outstanding defense didn't come straight to him, either. He had to study his opponents, learn their usual moves and then try hard to learn the skills necessary to stop them.He worked extremely hard to perfect his footwork and his balance.Today,so many young people come to the game with the thought that talent is all they need forsuccess.Michael thinks the other way.He knows his weaknesses, and for me,one of the signs of Michael's greatness is that he has turned his weaknesses into strengths.Another of the qualities I respect most about Michael is his performance on the court.Whilst he is very competitive,he always respects the other players, whether they are on his team or on the other side.Often,he gives a hand to an opponent who falls down.He is definitely not the type of player who would try to build himself up by tearing someone else down. This is an act of leadership.Through his outstanding performance on the court,he has won love and respect from both his teammates and opponents.Every season,Michael makes himself available to groups of children with serious diseases. He puts them at ease, lets them have a laugh, and makes it possible for them to enjoy basketball. When Michael retires,I only hope that young players like Grant Hill and Kobe Bryant will be influenced by his performance and by his sense of fair play.I hope that people will remember him for much more than just his championship rings.Being Michael's coach hasbeen a great joy.But more importantly,I consider Michael to be a friend.21.The text is written by _____.A.a basketball player B.a basketball coach C.a basketball fanD.a sports news reporter22.What is true about Michael Jordan?A.He can't jump high.B.He can't run fast.C.He can shoot well.D.He can take a day off.23.What does "Playing outstanding defense didn't come straight to him"in Sentence 6,Paragraph 2mean?A.He was not outstanding at playing defense at the very beginning.B.He was outstanding at playing defense from the very beginning.C.Playing outstanding defense was important to him.D.Playing outstanding defense was not important to him.24.Michael Jordan was all the following,except_____.A.respecting other players on the courtB.giving a hand to an opponent who falls downC.having competitive spiritD.building himself up by tearing others down 25.Which of the following is NOT true?A.The coach regarded Michael Jordan as a friend.B.Many children with serious diseases can get a chance to meet Michael Jordan.C.Michael Jordan has influenced many other basketball players through his love for the game.D.Michael Jordan doesn't think talent is everything a person needs for success in playing When he was young, he was strongly influenced by Thoreau and Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi’s idea of non-violent resistance. Having received a Ph.
