本片描述十九世纪发生在法国巴黎歌剧院的爱情故事。
时值1870年，在歌剧院的地下深处，传说住着一名相貌丑陋、戴着面具、却学识渊博的音乐天才，多年来他神出鬼没，躲避世人惊惧鄙夷的目光，被众人称之为“魅影”(杰拉德·巴特勒饰)。

关于歌剧魅影的一些理解与思考最早接触安德鲁洛伊韦伯的作品，是一张宝丽金的’The Very Best Of Andrew Lloyd Webber’。
后来逐渐接触到韦伯的一些音乐剧或改编自音乐剧的电影作品。
其中最为熟悉也最喜欢的，便是’The Phantom Of The Opera’。
作为毫无基本音乐知识的只能领会精神的白痴级音乐爱好者，不敢对该剧的音乐有任何贻笑大方的评价，只好从所谓“精神”方面来谈一谈了。
故事的主角，Phantom Of The Opera(PTO，原名Eric)，天生面部畸形，因此被吉普赛马戏团当做恶魔之子(Devil’s Child)沦为笼中野兽，不仅利用他的丑陋面孔来赚取微薄的利益，甚至辱骂鞭打他。
于是这童年恐怖悲惨的遭遇，他心中埋下了无情与邪恶的种子。
加之被Giry夫人解救并藏匿于歌剧院地下室后，便一直在阴暗无光的地下独自生活成长，没有朋友亲人，也从未接触过歌剧院外面的世界。
他不懂外面世界的一切，但它拥有音乐，他懂得音乐的一切。
他是天才的音乐家，演唱家，甚至是建筑家和魔术师。
他将整座剧院变成了他的迷宫般的世界，将剧院变成了自己歌剧的专属演出场。
但是，他还需要一个美丽的声音，来完美地演绎他的作品，传达他的情感。
