1. Vocabulary and Grammar
●Vocabulary Resource
1) Ability to use less common words;
2) Use of idiomatic language;
3) Paraphrasing(explaining words that you don't know);
4) Ability to talk about Business topics: HR, Marketing, management, and so on;
5) Ability to convey precise meaning
●Grammatical Range and Accuracy
There are two aspects of this score —— "range" and "accuracy". This score is often misunderstood because many people believe that a high score is awarded if the candidate doesn't make any grammar mistakes. The score in this section is based on a number of different factors including:
1) Sentence formation;
2) Use of clauses (subordinate etc);
3) Use of complex structures;
4) Range of tense use;
5) Error density (the number of errors in each sentence);
6) The level of errors (whether the errors occur in basic or complex structures)
2. Fluency and Discourse Management
In general terms, the score for "Fluency and Coherence" refers to the way that the candidate speaks.
The features described in the marking system for this section include:
1) Ability to produce long responses;
2) How easily the candidate can produce long responses;
3) The amount hesitation;
4) The speed of speech;
5) Use of discourse markers/linking phrases/connectives;
6) The amount of self-correction
3. Pronunciation
Band 5
l uses a full range of pronunciation features with precision and subtlety
l sustains flexible use of features throughout
l is effortless to understand
Band 4
l uses a range of pronunciation features with mixed control
l shows some effective use of features, but this is not sustained
l can generally be understood throughout, though mispronunciation of individual words or sounds reduces clarity at times.
Band 3
l shows all the positive features of band 2 and some, but not all the positive features of band 4
Band 2
l uses a limited range of pronunciation features
l attempts to control features, but lapses are frequent
l mispronunciations are frequent and cause some difficulty for the listener
Band 1
l shows all the positive features of band 2 and some, but not all the positive features
4. Interactive Communication
1) Can the candidate ask for opinions
2) Can the candidate express solutions
3) Can the candidate propose an idea; respond to a proposal and convince
4) Can the candidate express possibility, and respond
5) Can the candidate express certainty & uncertainty confirm and respond
6) Can the candidate keep a conversation going and ask follow-up questions
7) Can the candidate interrupt
