My least favorite is math because I find algebra kind of confusing. I'm really excited to tell you all about the new English textbook we just started using in my 7th grade class. It's for the second semester and the whole first unit is all about sports and games. It was super interesting learning about the primitive roots of the sports we watch on TV and play today.After the reading, there are some practice exercises focused on learning key vocabulary words related to sports equipment,venues, actions, and more. Some examples are "goal", "pitch", "dribble", "arena", and "spectators". The exercises have us match words to pictures, fill in blanks, and make sentences using the new terms. My personal favorite is the "make your own sketch" activity where we have to draw a simple sports scene and label all the elements in it. I decided to sketch a basketball game being played on an outdoor court. Let's just say my art skills leave something to be desired!The next section covers commonly used phrases and idioms used when discussing sports. My group decided to cover basketball since we're all big fans and players ourselves. We get to explore the history, major professional leagues, key rules, best players, controversial moments, and more. I'm already looking forward to putting together a highlight reel of epic basketball plays to include in our presentation.Toward the end of the unit, there is a writing section where we have to compose a letter discussing our opinions about an issue related to sports. Some of the sample topics are whether collegiate athletes should be paid, if aggressive behavior should be allowed, how to increase interest in less popular sports, and more. I'm planning to write about the importance of sporting events having adequate security and protocols to protect fans, players and staff.
