2016考研英语阅读真题:考研英语(一)第3篇“There is one and only one social responsibility of business” wrote Milton Friedman, a Nobel Prize-winning economist“That is, to use its resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits.”But even if yo u accept Friedman’s premise and regard corporate social responsibility(CSR) policies as a waste of shareholders’s money, things may not be absolutely clear-cut.New research suggests that CSR may create monetary value for companies at least when they are prosecuted for corruption.The largest firms in America and Britain together spend more than $15 billion a year on CSR, according to an estimate by EPG, a consulting firm.This could add value to their businesses in three ways.First, co nsumers may take CSR spending as a “signal” that a company’s products are of high quality.Second, customers may be willing to buy a company’s products as an indirect may to donate to the good causes it helps.And third, through a more diffuse “halo effect” whereby its good deeds earn it greater consideration from consumers and others.Previous studies on CSR have had trouble differentiating these effects because consumers can be affected by all three.A recent study attempts to separate them by looking at bribery prosecutions under American’s Foreign Corrupt Practices Act(FCPA).It argues that since prosecutors do not consume a company’s products as part of theirinvestigations, they could be influenced only by the halo effect.The study found that, among prosecuted firms, those with the most comprehensive CSR programmes tended to get more lenient penalties.Their analysis ruled out the possibility that it was firm’s political influence, rather than their CSR stand, that accounted for the leniency: Companies that contributed more to political campaigns did not receive lower fines.In all, the study concludes that whereas prosecutors should only evaluate a case based on its merits, they do seem to be influenced by a comp any’s record in CSR.“We estimate that either eliminating a substantial labour-rights concern, such as child labour, or increasing corporate giving by about 20% result in fines that generally are 40% lower than the typical punishment for bribing forei gn officials.” says one researcher.Researchers admit that their study does not answer the question at how much businesses ought to spend on CSR.Nor does it reveal how much companies are banking on the halo effect, rather than the other possible benefits, when they decide their do-gooding policies.But at least they have demonstrated that when companies get into trouble with the law, evidence of good character can win them a less costly punishment.诺贝尔经济学奖得主、经济学家米尔顿·弗里德曼写道,企业社会责任有且仅有一种,“那就是,利用自身资源从事能让其获利的各种活动。

That everyone’s too busy these days is a cliche.
But one specific complaint is made especially mournfully: There’s never any time to read.
What makes the problem thornier is that the usual time-management techniques don’t seem sufficient.
The web’s full of articles offering tips on making time to read: “Give up TV” or “Carry a book with you at all times”.
But in my experience, using such methods to free up the odd 30 minutes doesn’t w ork.
Sit down to read and the flywheel of work-related thoughts keeps spinning — or else you’re so exhausted that a challenging book’s the last thing you need.
The modern mind, Tim Parks, a novelist and critic, writes, “is overwhelmingly inclined toward communication...
It is not simply that one is interrupted; it is that one is actually inclined to interruption”.
Deep reading requires not just time, but a special kind of time which can’t be obtained merely by becoming more efficient.
In fact, “becoming more efficient” is part of the problem.
Thinking of time as a resource to be maximised means you approach it instrumentally,
judging any given moment as well spent only in so far as it advances progress toward some goal.
Immersive reading, by contrast, depends on being willing to risk inefficiency, goallessness, even time-wasting.
Try to slot it as a to-do list item and you’ll manage only goal-focused reading —useful, sometimes, but not the most fulfilling kind.
“The future comes at us like empty bottles along an unstoppable and nearly infinite conveyor belt,” writes Gary Eberle in his book Sacred Time,
and “we feel a pressure to fill these different-sized bottles (days, hours, minutes)as they pass,
for if they get by without being filled, we will have wasted them”.
No mind-set could be worse for losing yourself in a book.
So what does work?
Perhaps surprisingly, scheduling regular times for reading.
You’d think this might fuel the efficiency mind-set,
but in fact, Eberle notes, such ritualistic behaviour helps us “step outside time’s flow” into “soul time”.
You could limit distractions by reading only physical books, or on single-purpose e-readers.
“Carry a book with you at all times” can actually work, too — providing you dip in often enough, so that reading becomes the default
state from which you temporarily surface to take care of business, before dropping back down.
On a really good day, it no longer feels as if you’re “making time to read,” but just reading, and making time for everything else.

实际上,“提高效率”只是解决没有时间阅读这一问题的一方面。
如果能把时间看做是一种可被最大化利用的资源,那就意味着你能把它当做工具来用,
并且只有在你时刻都向特定目标迈进的时候,你才认为每一刻时间都是用有所值的。
相反,深度阅读取决于你愿意承担无效率、无目标地阅读所带来的后果,这种阅读后果甚至是浪费时间。
如果你能把阅读列为你每天必做事项之一,那么你就能做到专一于目标的阅读——有时这是有效果的,但它并不是最让人感到满足的阅读方式。
加里·埃伯利在他的《神圣的时间》一书中写道:“我们的未来就像空瓶子一样,在一条不可阻挡且似乎无止尽的传送带上流转,
这让我们感到一种压力,那就是不同大小的瓶子(几天、几小时、几分钟)在传送带上经过的时候要把它们都装满,
因为瓶子经过而没有被装满,我们就浪费了这些瓶子。
没有哪种心态能比沉浸书海这种感觉更好。
那么哪种方法能奏效呢?
那就是安排定期的阅读时间,这个答案或许让人感到惊讶。
你会觉得这种方式会助推注重效率的心理,
但埃伯利指出,事实上这种惯例性行为有助于我们“走出时间在流逝”这样的心理并进入“心灵时间”。
通过只阅读纸质书籍,或是在只有阅读这种功能的阅读器上阅读,就能减少让你分心的事情。

提是在足够多的时间里你都沉浸在阅读中,从而让阅读成为你的常态,只是在你需要处理事务的时候才把注意力从书上暂时移开,之后再次专心阅读。
