新概念英语第二册第73课-The record-holder

新概念英语第二册第73课:The record-holderLesson 73 The record-holder纪录保持者First listen and then answer the question.听录音,然后回答以下问题。
Did the boy go where he wanted to?Children who play truant from school are unimaginative. A quiet day's fishing, or eight hours in a cinema seeing the same film over and over again, is usually as far as they get. They have all been put to shame by a boy who, while playing truant, travelled 1,600 miles. He hitchhiked to Dover and, towards evening, went into a boat to find somewhere to sleep. When he woke up next morning, he discovered that the boat had, in the meantime, travelled to Calais. No one noticed the boy as he crept off. From there, he hitchhiked to Paris in a lorry. The driver gave him a few biscuits and a cup of coffee and left him just outside the city. The next car the boy stopped did not take him into the centre of Paris as he hoped it would, but to Perpignan on the French-Spanish border. There he was picked up by a policeman and sent back to England by the local authorities. He has surely set up a record for the thousands of children who dream of evading school.参考译文逃学的孩子们都缺乏想像力。

新概念第二册第73课课文原文

新概念第二册第73课课文原文Lesson 73 A trip to AustraliaI have just come back from a trip to Australia. Before I went there, I had only seen pictures of the place and heard of how beautiful it was. My first impression of Australia was positive. It is a huge country, almost as large as China. The population of Australia is about 17 million, which is much smaller than that of China. While I was there, I had the occasion to visit several cities, and I was struck by the differences between the cities of Australia and those of Europe. One of the cities I visited was Sydney, the largest city in Australia. It is situated in the south-east and has a population of over 3 million. The most outstanding feature of the city is its harbor, which is one of the largest and finest in the world. It is over 32 kilometers long and covers an area of 70 square kilometers. On both sides of the harbor, there are many high mountains covered with trees. I took a walk in the botanical gardens and enjoyed the beautiful view of the harbor. The city also has several beautiful sandy beaches, where I swam and lay in the sun for hours. Another city I visited was Melbourne, which is the second largest city in Australia and is situated in the south-east, just across the Bass Strait from Tasmania. The population of Melbourne is about 2.6 million. It is a beautiful city with a lot of parks and gardens. I took a walk in Fitzroy Gardens and visited the famous cricket ground. Unfortunately, there was no cricket match on that day, but I enjoyed seeing the ground where so many exciting matches had been played.I also went to Adelaide, which is the fifth largest city in Australia. The population of Adelaide is about 1 million. It is situated in the south and is surrounded by hilly country. The city itself is very flat with wide streets and a lot of open spaces. It has many parks and gardens and is known as the 'City of Churches'. I saw several beautiful old churches there. I also had the pleasure of visiting the Barossa Valley, which is one of the best wine-growing areas in Australia.During my visit, I traveled by train, bus, and plane. These are the three major means of transport in Australia. The train service, in particular, impressed me. Though I had to change trains several times to get from one place to another, I enjoyed every minute of my journey. The trains were very comfortable, and the scenery along the way was breathtaking. I was able to see the natural beauty of the country—the dense forests, the wide rivers, and the farms. The thing I liked most about Australia was the friendliness of the people. I was greeted with a smile everywhere I went. Strangers were very willing to help me whenever I needed assistance. I also enjoyed the food. I had the opportunity to try different types of cuisine, from traditional Australian dishes to various international cuisines. The seafood was particularly delicious, and I indulged in it every chance I had.Overall, my trip to Australia was an unforgettable experience. The diverse landscapes, the vibrant cities, and the warm hospitality of the people made it a truly remarkable journey. I would definitelyrecommend visiting Australia to anyone looking for an adventure and an opportunity to explore a unique and fascinating country.。
