Setting and Structure
Setting
The story took place during the Roaring Age, and there are four major setting in this novel: 1.West Egg Gatsby’s mansion and Nick’s house 2.East Egg Daisy’s home 3.The Valley of Ashes Wilson’s garage, Michaeles’ restaurant, and the advertising billboard with the eyes of Dr. T. J. Eckleburg 4.New York City offices, the apartment Tom keeps for Myrtle, and the Plaza Hotel ( With each of these major setting were two or more subsettings.)
Background introduction
• The Roaring Age describes the period after the end of World War I(1918), through the Roaring Twenties, ending with the onset of the Great Depression(1929). • The spirit of Roaring Twenties was marked by a general feeling of discontinuity associated with modernity, a break with traditions.
• The Great Gatsby is a specific of American society during the Roaring Twenties, telling the quintessential American story of a man rising from rags to riches. The narrator of the story is Nick Garraway ,a young, moral, and conservative mid-westerner from a prominent family.
• East Egg, where the Buchanans and other “old money” people lived, was the “fashionable” side of Long Island, the home of the Ivy League set who had possessed the wealth for a long time and were comfortable and secure with their money.
• However , Fitzgerald and his wife were not always happy in their marriage,by 1930,Zelda had her first breakdown and in 1932 another, form which she never fully recovered.By 1937, he metand fell in love with 28 year old Sheliah Graham,a famous gossip columnist. In the rest life, he lived quietly wlth her except for occasionally drunken spells and visits to Zelda and his daughter.
• West Egg, where Gatsby’s and Nick live, was the “less fashionable” side of Long Island. Their houses are vulgar and would be totally out of place in the more refined world of East Egg. This explained the reason why in the end Gatsby was ruined by the East Egg and Nick decided to go back home.

• And also a leading figure in the socially import Triangle Club, a dramatic society and made lifelong friendships with Edmund Wilson and John Peale Bishop. However,he had troubles in study at college and never managed to graduate,so he joined in the army in November 1917.
• The Valley of Ashes in contrast to both East Egg and West Egg was the desolate wasteland where the poor like Wilsons lived. As a matter of fact, those poor people were the victims of the rich. For instance, the Wilsons were the very victims of the Buchanans. The valley was literally characterized by dust, for the city’s ashes were dumped there, and the people were symbolically dumped on by the rich world. The valley, with the eyes of Dr. T. J. Eckleburg, also represented the spiritual emptiness and dryness of the world.
