Unit 13 单元检测B——阅读理解提速练Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2018·湖南省重点名校联考)How many hours of sleep did you get last night? If the answer is not enough, then you might have a harder time remembering something from yesterday than those who were well rested.Scientists have long known the advantages of a good night's sleep, but a new study has confirmed the old wives' tale that sleeping on anidea can actually make it easy to apprehend it, as sleeping is a key partof the human learning process.By studying the sleeping patterns of mice, a team from the JohnHopkins University School of Medicine found that sleep allows us to readjust brain cells, solidify lessons learned and then use them when we wake up.Lead author Graham Diering said, “The human brain can only store a certain amount of information before it needs to be readjusted. The bottom line is that sleep is not really downtime (停工期) for the brain. It has important work to do then.”When we are awake, the system of neurons (神经元) is pushed towards full ability in a bid to make sense of the world and everything we are taking in. This constant firing of neurons means we will lose our ability to devote brainpower to memory. Then when we are asleep, there is a process of reduction going on, which causes a 20% drop in receptor proteins (受体蛋白质) compared to those who are still awake. And it is this process of reduction that goes on when you are sleeping that is necessary for learning and memory. It isn't the only study to remind us of the value of rest. Back in September, a study showed when we sleep, the brain works harder to process the memories we value more highly. So studying before going to bed can help you remember more things than you do in the morning.A.Carry out.B.Dream up.C.Accept. D.Understand.解析:选D词义猜测题。

十三必修5 Unit 13 PeopleⅠ. 阅读理解A(2021·南昌模拟)I once met a well-known botanist at a dinner party. I had never talked witha botanist before, and I found him very interesting. I sat there absorbed and listened while he spoke of unusual plants and his experiments (he even told me astonishing facts about the simple potato). I had a small indoor garden of my own—and he was good enough to tell me how to solve some of my problems. As I said, we were at a dinner party. There must have been a dozen other guests, but I broke an important rule of politeness. I ignored everyone else and talked for hours to the botanist.Midnight came. I said good night to everyone and departed. The botanist then turned to our host and said many nice things about me, including that I was a “most interesting conversationalist”.An interesting conversationalist? I had said hardly anything at all. I couldn’t have said anything if I had wanted to without changing the subject, for I didn’t know any more about plants than I knew about sharks. But I had done this one thing; I had listened carefully. I listened because I was really interested. And he felt it. Naturally that pleased him. That kind of listening is one of the best ways to show respect to others, and it makes them feel great too. “Few human beings, ” wrote Jack Woodford in Strangersin Love, “can resist the sweet effect of rapt attention. ” I went even further than that. I was “sincere in my admiration and generous in my praise”. I told him that I had been hugely entertained and instructed. I told him I wished I had his knowledge. I told him that I should love to wander the fields with him. What’s more, it was all true. And so I had him thinking of me as a good conversationalist when, in reality, I had only been a good listener and had encouraged him to talk.【文章大意】本文是一篇记叙文。

Unit 13 Peopledifferent directions. My son Jody has hated school since day one in kindergarten. Science projects waited until the last moment. Book reports weren't written until the final threat.I've been a newspaperman all my adult life. My daughter is a university graduate working toward her master's degree in English. But Jody? When he entered the tenth grade he became a “vo-tech” student(技校学生). They're called “motorheads” by the rest of the student body. When a secretary in my office first called him “motorhead”, I was shocked. “Hey, he's a good kid,” I wanted to say. “And smart, really.”I learned later that motorheads are, indeed, different. They usually have dirty hands and wear dirty work clothes. And they don't often make school honor rolls(光荣榜).But being the parent of a motorhead is itself an experience in education. We who labor in clean shirts in offices don't have the abilities that motorheads have.I began to learn this when I had my car crashed. The cost to repair it was estimated at $800. “Hey, I can fix it,” said Jody. I doubted it, but let him go ahead, for I had nothing to lose.My son, with other motorheads, fixed the car. They got parts(零件) from a junkyard, and ability from vo-tech classes. The cost was $25 instead of $800.Since that first repair job, a broken air-conditioner, a non-functioning washer and a non-toasting toaster have been fixed. Neighbors and co-workers trust their car repairs to him. These kids are happiest when doing repairs. They joke and laugh and are living in their own relaxed world. And their minds are bright despite their dirty hands and clothes.I have learned a lot from my motorhead: publishers need printers, engineers need mechanics, and architects need builders. Most important, I have learned that fathers don't need clones in footsteps or anywhere else.My son may never make the school honor roll. But he made mine.语篇解读天生我材必有用。

Unfortunately, in this modern world, we have become confused by very narrow standards of beauty. Images of celebrities who never seem to age are seen everywhere these days. We forget the fact that most of these images are the result of super photo manipulation (处理), driven by the incredibly powerful beauty industry. We are all different — why should we all look the same? Isn’t there more to life than undergoing surgery in order to have the same boring face that everybody else wants to have?—Dr Elisabeth McKenna, PsychologistYes, it’s fake! That’s what I told my friends when they started asking me about my nose job. I’d always been sensitive to my nose, but it took me a long time before I decided to go for cosmetic surgery. I took advice from several doctors and after careful consultation I finally decided to have it done. I had been saving money from my parttime job an d my parents helped me out with the rest. It was quite expensive but I don’t regret a penny of it. In fact I wish I’d had it done a few years ago. I’ m sure I wouldn’t have been teased so much at school.—Debbie Caron, StudentIt makes me really angry to think of the millions of people who spend a fortune on cosmetic surgery. Surgery should be carried out for medical purposes, not vanity (虚荣心). I would rather all the money spent on cosmetic surgery was available to treat people around the world who are in n eed but can’t get proper medical treatment. Furthermore, there are thousands of underqualified surgeons out there who only care about getting as rich as possible as quickly as possible. They don’t care about the psychological and physical damage they do. The whole industry makes me sick. We should do something to ban it.—Danny Glass, Student【语篇解读】本文关于整容的。

Unit 13 People李仕才Ⅰ阅读理解AFriendship is one of the basic bonds between human beings. While the characteristics of friendship might vary from one country to another, people from all cultures not only enjoy friends but need them. Many studies have shown that teenagers who have no friends often suffer from psychological disorders. It has been shown that teenagers, perhaps more than any other age group, need companionship and a sense of belonging. The negative consequences of loneliness have also been observed among the elderly. The death of a spouse often leaves a widow or a widower totally bereft. If, however, they are surrounded by friends and relatives and if they are able to express their feelings, they are more likely to recover from their grief.“No man is an island.” In other words, we are all parts of society. We all need the love, admiration, respect and moral support of other people. If we are fortunate, our friends will provide us with all of these necessary aspects of life.As most people observe, there are many levels of friendship. The degree or intensity of friendship varies depending on the personality of the individuals involved and the context of the relationships. Outgoing persons enjoy being surrounded by many people whereas shy persons are perhaps content with fewer but more intense friendships.Everyone is not equally open with all their friends. The degree of closeness is determined by many factors. Close friends can be formed at any stage in one’s life but they are usually very rare. Not very many people have more than a few really close friends. Regardless of the level of closeness, all friendships are based on reciprocity (互惠), honesty and a certain amount of love and affection.1.Who are more likely to suffer from psychological disorders without friends?A. Teenagers.B. Adults.C. The elderly.D.A couple.2.What does the sentence “No man is an island” really mean?A. No man is willing to live on an island.B. Man usually doesn’t go to an islandC. Everyone is related with our society.D. Our society is just like an island.3.What can we learn about outgoing people?A. They like being alone.B. They are fond of making friends.C. They have intense friendships.D. They have fewer close friends indeed4.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?A. The formation of close friends.B. The number of real friends.C. Honesty, love and affection.D. Factors to determine the degree of closeness.【文章大意】本文是一篇议论文。

Unit 13 PeopleⅠ.阅读理解AOn a visit to Japan, Wangari Maathai learned the story of the hummingbird (蜂鸟) and the forest fire. While the other animals run in fear, the hummingbird flies above the fire time and again, leaving a few drops of water from its beak.“Why do you bother?” the other animals shout at the hummingbird. “I'm doing the best that I can,” the hummingbird replies.“It's such a beautiful story,” Ms. Maathai says, thinking of the world's environmental problems. “There's always something we can do with our little beak like the little hummingbird.”In 2004 Maathai was honored with a Nobel Peace Prize for her work founding the Green Belt Movement (GBM), which hires villagers, especially women, to improve the environment. Since then, she's realized that people's values are what inspire them. If the values are good ones, good actions will follow.“If you don't have good values, you'll develop vices (恶劣行径),” says Maathai. “And if we give in to the vice, we destroy ourselves. We destroy t he environment.” That's the message of her new book.In 1971, Maathai received a doctor's degree from the University of Nairobi, the largest university in Kenya. She's now back in her homeland beginning work on the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies (WMI) at the University of Nairobi. “They want to call it after me,” she says.WMI will pay more attention to “learning by doing” and use knowledge to deal with real problems. “What Africa needs is people who are willing to get their fingers dirty and work with the people,” says Maathai.Planting trees is one way people connect with the natural world. 高考英语一轮复习Unit13People能力提升题组训练(B)(含解析)北师大版能力提升题组训练(B)Ⅰ.阅读理解AIt is a familiar scene these days: employees taking newly laid-off (下岗的) co-workers out for a drink for comfort. But which side deserves sympathy more, the jobless or the still employed? On March 6, researchers at a conference at the University of Cambridge heard data suggesting it’s the latter.Brendan Burchell,a Cambridge sociologist, presented his analysis based on various surveys conducted across Europe. The data suggest that employed people who feel insecure in their jobs show similar levels of anxiety and depression as those who are unemployed. Although a newly jobless person’s mental health may “bottom out” after about six months, and then even begin to improve, the mental state of people who are continuously worried about losing their job “just continues to get worse and worse,” Burchell says.Evolutionary psychologists support this theory by arguing that human beings feel more stress during times of insecurity because they sense an immediate but invisible threat. Patients have been known to experience higher levels of anxiety, for example, while waiting for examination results than knowing what they are suffering from —even if the result is cancer. It’s better to get the bad news and start doing something about it rather than wait with anxiety. When the uncertainty continues, people stay in a nonstop “fight or flight” response, which leads to damaging stress. But not every employee in insecure industries has such a discouraging view, Burchell says. In general, women get on better. While reporting higher levels of anxiety than men when directly questioned, women scored lower in stress on the GHQ 12, even when they had a job they felt insecure about losing. As Burchell explains,“For women, most studies show that any job—it doesn’t matter whether it is secure or insecure—gives psychological improvement over unemployment.”Burchell supposesthat the difference in men is that they tend to feel pressure not only to be employed, but also to be the primary breadwinner, and that more of a man’s self-worth depends on his job.1.Why do researchers think the still employed deserve sympathy more?A.They have to do more work since then.B.They have no chance to find better jobs.C.They have to work with inexperienced workers.D.They constantly worry about losing their job.2.What is most likely to cause a “fight or flight” response?A.Not having a paid job.B.Fierce competition for jobs.C.Not knowing what will happen.D.Pressure to work longer hours.3.What will the writer talk about following the last paragraph?A.Advice on preparing a job interview.B.Advice to those in insecure industries.C.Some knowledge of psychology.D.Difference in men and women.4.What could be the best title for the text?A.Is It Less Stressful to Get Laid Off Than Stay On?B.Should Greater Sympathy Be Given to the Jobless?C.Do Employees Bear More Stress Than Ever Before?D.Do Men or Women Show Higher Levels of Anxiety?语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。
