Abstract

British novelist Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice takes the daily life as the source material, vividly reflecting the England country life and the ways of the world in a conservative and isolated state at the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century. Through the description, analysis and discussion of four different marriages among young men and women, the novel almost completely summarizes the marriage attitudes in society at that time. Taking the development process of the characters' marriages in the novel as the main line, through the detailed analysis of the four different marriages, this paper discusses the marriage attitudes in Pride and Prejudice and points out the practical significance of the novel.

1 Introduction

The book Pride and Prejudice about commonplace things and ordinary people is one of Jane Austen’s famous book s, being the representative of realistic literature. Taking young people’s marriage as the thread, the writer uses intelligent words to depict a few different marriages in the book, each of which reflects people's attitudes toward marriage in that time. We can comprehend the essence of Charlotte and Collins’s marriage, Lydia and Wickham’s marriage, Jane and Bingley’s marriage and Elizabeth and Darcy’s marriage through Elizabeth’s vie ws. The four marriages represent four different marriage attitudes: First, there is marriage merely for money; the second is the tendency to marry for vanity and passion; the third is to marry for the same interests; lastly comes the ideal marriage, which is to marry for true love. At the same time, the book also reflects the author’s marriage view: To marry for wealth and beauty is wrong. This kind of marriage cannot retain long-term happiness, and truly happy marriage is based on love and sense. She emphasizes the importance of the ideal marriage, and regards men and women's emotion as the foundation stone which concludes the ideal marriage.
