Unit1 Anne’s Best FriendDo you want a friend whom you could tell everything to, like your deepest feelings and thoughts? Or are you afraid that your friend would laugh at you, or would not understand what you are going through? Anne Frank wanted the first kind, so she made her diary her best friend.Anne lived in Amsterdam in the Netherlands during World War Ⅱ. Her family was Jewish so nearly twenty-five months before they were discovered. During that time the only true friend was her d iary. She said, ”I don’t want to set down a series of facts in a diary as most people do, but I want this diary itself to be my friend, and I shall call my friend Kitty.” Now read how she felt after being in the hiding place since July 1942. Thursday 15th June, 1944Dear Kitty,I wonder if it’s because I haven’t been able to be outdoors for so long that I’ve grown so crazy about everything to do with nature. I can well remember that there was a time when a deep blue sky, the song of the birds, moonlight and flowers could never have kept me spellbound. That’s changed since I was here.…For example, one evening when it was so warm, I stayed awake on purpose until half past eleven in order to have a good look at the moon by my self. But as the moon gave f ar too much light, I didn’t dare open a window. Another time five months ago, I happened to be upstairs at dusk when the window was open. I didn’t go downstairs until the window bad to be shut. The dark, rainy evening, the wind, the thundering clouds held me entirely in their power; it was the first time in a year and a half that I’d seen the night face to face……Sadly …I am only able to look at nature through dirty curtains hanging before very dusty windows. It’s no pleasure looking through these any longe r because nature is one thing that really must be experienced.
LISTENING TO HOW BODIES TALK倾听身体的诉说We use both words and body language to express our thoughts and opinions in our interactions with other people. We can learn a lot about what people are thinking by watching their body language. Words are important, but the way people stand, hold their arms, and move their hands can also give us information about their feelings.
Just like spoken language, body language varies from culture to culture. The crucial thing is using body language in a way that is appropriate to the culture you are in. For example, making eye contact—looking into someone’s eyes—in some countries is a way to display interest. In other countries, by contrast, eye contact is not always approved of. For example, in many Middle Eastern countries, men and women are not socially permitted to make eye contact. In Japan, it may demonstrate respect to look down when talking to an older person.

Unit4A NIGHT THE EARTH DIDN'T SLEEPStrange things were happening in the countryside of northeast Hebei. For three days the water in the village wells rose and fell, rose and fell.Farmers noticed that the well walls had deep cracks in them.A smelly gas came out of the cracks. In the farmyards, the chickens and even the pigs were too nervous to eat.Mice ran out of the fields looking for places to hide. Fish jumped out of their bowls and ponds. At about3:00am on July28,1976,some people saw bright lights in the sky.The sound of planes could be heard outside the city of Tangshan even when no planes were in the sky.In the city, the water pipes in some buildings cracked and burst. But the one million people of the city, who thought little of these events, were asleep as usual that night.At3:42am everything began to shake. It seemed as if the world was at an end!Eleven kilometres directly below the city the greatest earthquake of the20th century had begun. It was felt in Beijing, which is one hundred kilometres away.One-third of the nation felt it.A huge crack that was eight kilometres long and thirty metres wide cut across houses, roads and canals. Steam burst from holes in the ground.Hard hills of rock became rivers of dirt.In fifteen terrible seconds a large city lay in ruins. The suffering of the people was extreme.Two-thirds of them died or were injured.Thousands of families were killed a nd many children were left without parents. The number of people who were killed or injured reached more than400,000. But how could the survivors believe it was natural?Everywhere they looked nearly everything was destroyed. All of thecity's hospitals,75%of its factories and buildings and90%of its homes were gone.Bricks covered the ground like red autumnleaves. No wind, however, could blow them away. Two dams fell and most of the bridges also fell or were not safe for travelling. The railway tracks were now useless pieces of steel.Tens of thousands of cows would never give milk again. Half a million pigs and millions of chickens were dead.50People were shocked. Then, later that afternoon, another big quake which was almost as strong as the first one shook Tangshan. Some of the rescue workers and doctors were trapped under the ruins.More buildings fell down.Water, food, and electricity were hard to get.People began to wonder how long the disaster would last. All hope was not lost.Soon after the quakes, the army sent150,000soldiers to Tangshan to help the rescue workers. Hundreds of thousands of people were helped. The army organized teams to dig out those who were trapped and to bury the dead.To the north of the city, most of the10,000miners were rescued from the coal mines there.Workers built shelters for survivors whose homes had been destroyed.Fresh water was taken to the city by train, truck and plane.Slowly, the city began to breathe again.单词:Book1Unit4earthquake/'ə:θkweik/n.地震quake/kweik/n.地震right away立刻;马上well/wel/n.井△crack/kræk/n. 农场;农家pipe/paip/n. 百万event/i'vent/n.事件;大事as if仿佛;好像at an end结束;终结nation/'neiʃən/n.民族;国家;国民canal/kə'næl/n.运河;水道steam/sti:m/n.蒸汽;水汽dirt/də:t/n.污垢;泥土ruin/'ru:in/n. 苦难;痛苦extreme/ik'stri:m/adj. 幸存者;生还者;残存物destroy/di'strɔi/vt.破坏;毁坏;消灭brick/brik/n.砖;砖块dam/dæm/n.水坝;堰堤track/træk/n. 援救;营救trap/træp/vt. 陷阱;困境electricity/ilek'trisəti/n. 埋葬;掩埋;隐藏mine/main/n.矿;矿山;矿井miner/main/n.矿工shelter/'ʃeltə/n.掩蔽;掩蔽处;避身处a(great)number of许多;大量的title/'taitl/n. 记者bar/bɑ:/n. 令人恐惧的congratulation/kənɡrætʃu'leiʃən/n. 断定;判断;判决sincerely/sin'siəli/adv.真诚地;真挚地express/ik'spres/vt.

Tucked away in our subconscious is an idyllic vision. We see ourselves on a long trip that spans the continent. We are traveling by train. Out the windows, we drink in the passing scene of cars on nearby highways, of children waving at a crossing, of cattle grazing on a distant hillside, of smoke pouring from a power plant, of row upon row of corn and wheat, of flatlands and valleys, of mountains and rolling hillsides, of city skylines and village halls. But uppermost in our minds is the final destination. On a certain day at a certain hour, we will pull into the station. Bands will be playing and flags waving. Howrestlessly we pace the aisles, damning the minutes for loitering --waiting, waiting, waiting for the station. 我们期待着, 期待着, 期待着火车进站的那一刻!"When we reach the station, that will be it! Do you detect a rhythm? Are there any repeated words, rhymes or other special effects?
