读书报告《远大前程》(英文版)
An Analysis of the Character PipPip is a character of the novel Great Expectations which is written by Charles Dickens. He is the most popular English novelist of the Victorian era, and one of the most popular of all time.He has many masterpieces, such as A tale of cities, David Copperfield, Hard time, Oliver Twist and so on. Great Expectations is one of his masterpieces. The story in this book happened in middle of 19 century and it reflects the gap between the rich and the poor in the capitalistic society.Pip is the main character of this book and through the story of him we can get the theme of the book. After reading this book, in my opinion, Pip is a kind and ambitious man. In the beginning, I know Pip is a poor child. He lives in a small village with his sister and Joe Garage. His parents died when he was a baby. So Pip is really poor. Then he saves Magwitch who is a convict. In the end, Magwitch gives Pip the great expectations by sending Pip to London and letting him receive a good education. I think it’s suggesting that Pip is helpful and kind to others. In the book, there are a lot of things that tell me it. For examples, in chapter 20, Pip plans to help Herbert because both of them spend too much money and Herbert can hardly afford it. Then Pip arranges to invest some money in a shipping company called Clarrikers and this company promises to make Herbert a partner of it. But Pip has to ask Miss Havisham for help since he has no money to help Herbert. Except for this thing, Pip also forgives Miss Havisham and saves her from a fire. All of these things show that Pip is a good and tolerant man.Actually, I didn’t want to continue reading the book when I read the chapter 13. In this chapter, Pip knows that somebody is to give him the great expectations and he will go to London to get the good education. Then he becomes overconfident and unfriendly to Joe and Biddy. I am really angry with it and even I don’t want to continue reading. But I know it will not be allowed and it’s too childish indeed. So, I am going on. In next chapters, I find other things likethis. In the chapter 16, Pip receives a letter from Biddy and it says Joe will come here. In general, when old friends give a visit to ours, we will be happy. But Pip concerns about Joe’ coming. And when Joe comes here, Pip is unfriendly to him. So, I think Pip also has bad aspects of his character. At last, I think Pip is also faithful to love. When Pip comes to Miss Havisham’s home and meets Estella, he fells in love with her. And then he changes his attitude to life. He wants to be a gentleman and get Miss Havisham’s admiration. In this way he can make Estella love him and finally marry her. These three points are my understanding of Pip. Anyhow, it’s a book to worth reading.。

以下是的《远大前程》英文,供各位参阅。
With so many famous masterpieces on the booklist, itis really a pretty hard job to chooseone to read first. After much hesitation and deeply thought, I finallydecided to borrowGreat Expectations from the small library.Great Expectations is about love, family, andrejection as Pip and Miss Havisham have bothbeen rejectedin certain ways. Pip is a boy around 13 years old, easy to fright, and goesthrough his life suffering lots of sadness. He is in love with a girl named Estella and wantsher tofind his love, but for him being shy and not showinghimself to her, it makes it veryhard for him.Great Expectations was the penultimate novel pleted by the most popular novelist ofVictorian England, Charles Dickens. Born in Kent, England, in 1812 to a family of modestmeans but great pretensions,Dickens’s early life was marked by both humiliation andambition. Dickens never forgot the period of financial crisis during hischildhood, whenfollowing his father’s bankruptcy, he was taken out of school and forced to work in ashoepolish warehouse.Pip meets an escaped convict,Magwitch, and gives him food, in an encounter that is tohaunt both theirlives. When Pip receives riches from a mysterious benefactor he snobbishly abandons his friendsfor London society and his“great expectations”.I set up my mind to select it for the reason that I have read a brief introduction of thismasterpiece in my high school English textbook before. In addition, a Tale of Two Citieswhich is also written by Charles Dickens, the outstanding and special English writer, left mea wonderful and deep impression, when I finished reading the marvelous story.Of course,Great Expectations didn’t let me down, either. What’s more, the whole structureof the novel is well and elaborately designed. The plot is extremely attractive and full ofunexpected twists. Quite a few characters have a distinguishable personality. Moreover, thosewords and sentences are so beautiful and meaningful that I even took them down carefully inmy notebook. By reading them no less than three times, I have learned not only some newphrases and sentences, but also a philosophy of life.Among the characters, which impressed me most are not Pip and Estella who should be regardedas the leading roles, but Joe and Magwitch. I feel awfully sorry that Iwas not brave enoughto read the original edition that is as thick as a brick. Otherwise, I may appreciate Joe andMagwitch more.Yes, they are not the main characters in the novel. However, what they saidand what they did deeply touched me. It’s interesting, isn’t it? They are quite theopposite guys. One is a totally good man without the least bit of wickedness while the otheris a prisoner who is believed to have mitted every evil.I believe that everyone who reads the book is to like Joe. When he talked about his heavydrinking father who hit him a lot, he said he had a lot of love. Faced with his rude wife, hewould rather seem a bit weak or foolish than stand up to her and fight for himself. KnowingpeacockishPip was ashamed of his uneducated manners, he left sadly and quietly. The worldrushes on over the strings of the lingering heart making the music of sadness. But when hewas informed of Pip’s illness, he immediately came to take good care of Pip.He is alwayscontributing everything and requiring nothing. Such a man is Joe, kind, tolerant andselfless. "Nothing is so mild and gentle as courage, nothing socruel and pitiless ascowardice," says a wise author. However, why do I appreciate Magwitch, the bad guy? You may wonder. Indeed, Magwitch did alot of evil thingswhen he was young. But how can you be unmoved when you get to know thatthe old man kept himself going just by thinking of the boy who once did him a small favor? He lost his only daughter and Pip had no parents, so he considered himself as the boy’ssecond father, making up his mind to help his dear boy became a gentleman. He did every kindof job and led a hard life in Australia. At last he made a big fortune and promised himselfthat all the money would go to Pip.He could have led a better life in Australia ,but Ihechose to go back to London .with the simple intention of seeing Pip, he went back at the riskof being hanged! “whatever the fault he had from the start, remember, reader,he had a goodheart.” Joe used these words to describe his father. But I think these words can betterdescribe Magwitch. He lived with the fear of deathall his life. Who shuts love out, in turnshall be shut outfrom love. However, thankfully, because Pip finally realized his goodheart, his ending was peaceful.Dickens has Pip as the writer and first person narrator of this aount of his life'sexperiences, and the entire story is understood to have been written as a retrospective, rather than as a present tense narrative or a diary or journal. Still, though Pip "knows" howall the events in the story will turn out,he uses only very subtleforeshadowing so that welearn of events only when the Pipin the story does. Pip does, however, use the perspectiveof the bitter lessons he's learned to mentacidly on various actions and attitudes in hisearlier life.I know how to fully understand this novel, twice is far from enough. Pip,Estella, MissHavisham,Biddy even Mr Wemmick, every single character has a story that is well worth myattention. I love this novel so much that I am determined to read the original edition oneday. Believe me. But before that day es,I will see the movie Great Expectations first.Search for knowledge, read more, sit on your front porch and admire the view without payingattention to your needs."Great Expectations" is the late works of Dickens, but also his most mature work. The title is ironic, it tells an orphan, Pip wants to be the ideal upper story of disillusionment, he eventually did not as a gentleman, of course, and there is no so-called Great Expectations. This book is an extremely exciting story closely the reader's heartstrings, and vividly describes the suffering of a continuous struggle with the fate of orphans Pip psychological history, at last he finally grasped the truth of life to bee an ordinary person, and to shake hands with the first love reunion, was a plete ending."Great Expectations" The story has its unique features; there is a time to let the reader unable to stop feeling. Pip hero of this book, but also linked to other charactersin a theme. The environment can change people's destiny,Pip is to be the environment change. The beginning, Pip was a kid how naive, easily the letter people, sympathetic. However, Pip had suffered the fate that met the Queenas a girl, this girl will be thorough affect his life. He began to look down on themselves, they began their own home environment and background feel inferior, "and I thoughtthis house in mind, there is no hint of sunshine! The same time, their actions are more offensive and more looked down on his family." It was a very good scene of writing, insuch a horrible room, look down upon himself. Is the magic do? Not! This is to be the one truth: Man is the product of the environment. Is the environment has changed Pip.Further, Pip, "good luck", the already possessed, and the non-go when the upper one. Pip asked Herbert to teach him manners and rules, shows that he was anxious to be a Londoner. However, no matter what Pip’s hearts of the good, you can still feel the. He secretly spending money to support the cause of Herbert, which shows that he is a good person, generous benevolence of friends, and never mean. Know that his benefactor turned out to be a fugitive; hebegan to evolve from the environment. "And the benefactor goodbye became heavy with the anxiety of."This shows that Pip began to care about the safety of the benefactor, and affection of the benefactor produced. "Even if we lack of money can no longer use the benefactor’s money." Indicates Pip heart good things started to recover in the end, he lived a mundane and real life. Finally, Pip and Yisidaila Stop hand, one out of the ruins, the vast heaven and earth being immersed in the quiet of the moon…… From the ruins to the night's fog and then the very beautiful moon, a symbol of Pip and Yisidaila love Trilogy began is not possible, and then is hazy, and finally the moonlight shines. This is a happy ending, finally no regrets. The language features, writing in the modus operandi, but there are many places that we can learn. "Rats have been eating it with his teeth, but there is more than sharp teeth of rats chewing on me." In order to describe the Miss Habersham suffering, wonderful! "A people the illusion of terror spread in my heart, as if I Yisidaila are beginning to rot … …" This is a classic literary description, to the effect of poetry."I'm suddenly feeling out of control, lying on the floor, straining to pull his hair on both sides." This sentence in particular to convey the character'spsychological inner conflicts, he knew loved the wrong person, but still going to love. "London gave me the impression that a little bit chaotic, narrow roads, forming, but also very dirty." This is only a few strokes; heoutlines the characteristics of London. Pip was in this environment, to bee a "super person" two efforts. The author describes the Miss Habersham He's story, both pact and they are prehensive, using a flashback approach. At this point, we have the old lady's situationis clear to her before the abnormal behavior to understand. "His words like lightning, so I look to see ourselves, and then disappointment, danger, shame and other consequencesof the impact of ing to me, so I was almost breathing difficulties."Lightning in this analogy is very aurate, Magdalena is based on a series of swift and strong questioning reveals that he is t he benefactor of Pip’s. Why Pip disappointments, danger, shame it? That is because the benefactor in his heart has always been a fan, he alwaysfelt the old lady, the result is a fugitive, he certainly disappointed. Contact with the fugitive is certainly dangerous, this point Pip clear. The fugitive's money than with an upper people's lives is also true that allows Pip ashamed ofIn the years went on, people began to change, in the author's pen, wrote a very natural throughout. Finally we all lived in mon and not real life; this is what a perfect ending.。
《远大前程》英文读后感作文
《远大前程》英文读后感作文《远大前程》英文读后感作文篇一:《远大前程》英文读后感作文I think there are three themes revealed in the novel Great Expectations.1.women are fragile. That is not because those women are in lack of will, but that they need surviving abilities and that of self-survival and struggle against destiny. They always turn to men. That can be called “hero saving the beauty”. This notion originated in the Greek tales but is still adopted successively. The only difference between them lies in the plot and structure. Estella is adopted and trained to break men?s hearts by Miss Havisham. Havisham revenges men and marries Estella to an unworthy guy though Pip deeply loves Estella. Nothing can be bitterer than see his lover married to another guy for a man. Pip really fell into the despair of losing Estella. However, Estella suffers a lot and begins to regret for her initial choice for her spouse and begins to treasure2.Facing destiny, women are physically and intellectually inferior to men. Actually it does not mean they have an inferior intelligence, but that it seems so. Or we can say that both men and women have the same potential of intelligence, but women never show a lot. God creates everyone equally, but not everyone is granted the same approaches to success or achievements. Women are restricted to families, which restrictsthem from showing a lot. They can cook food well, which is one standard for their excellence but not the one for male. The novel goes this way since it implies the male consciousness. The ordinary intelligence of women in marriage and love is exposedcompletely. Havisham is abandoned on her wedding day, but she keeps the room like the day she got married, while on the other hand she tries every means to revenge men. Bearing these two conflictive thoughts in mind, Havisham certainly fails to live her own life out of the control or influence from male.3.The discipline for women ]. A feminist De Bufuwa says: “One is called woman because she is?made? not ?born?.” Culturally woman is the product of society and the result of its strict restrictions. Those women who do not obey the disciplines are not regarded as gracious or good women by social criteria, which emphasizes on families, the responsibilities for their husbands and their dependence on men. In Great Expectations, Estella and Havisham?s misfortunes are closely attached to love and marriage. They try to revenge men and but they cannot leave men. Estella leaves Pip, but at last she comes back to him. And Havisham keeps thinking about her marriage day and her husband. So in Dickens?s novel, women are decent on surface, but failed in heart.Every period has an outstanding feature, which make descendants linger in mind. To learn this novel can help us in understanding better women?s efforts to stand up. Society presses public to believe that maleplays a dominant role. Havisham can symbolize a feminist but what then? She needs a male accompany. Her ending somewhat is tragic but Estella harvests through a long time, but anyway she wins in depending man and leading a pleasant life. 篇二:《远大前程》英文读后感作文Recently, I have finished reading Great Expectations, which is widely considered as themasterpiece of Dickens. The historic background of this bookis Victorian Period which was the time when British was governed by Queen Victoria. The hero of the book is Pip, who was living in a blacksmith family. Someday, he met Magwitch, who was a convict, and he helped him. To show his gratitude, Magwitch gave Pip a good fortune and Pip led a totally different life after he got the money. However, Pip lost all of his money and fame because of his enemies’ plot at the last and become ordinary people at the last.Dickens is famous for his novel such as Great Expectations, the Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist and so on. He always creates some people in lower class and show their different qualities. In Great Expectations, he tried to show us the conflict between different classes in VictorianPeriod by telling us the story of Pip. After Pip got the money, he left his friends and family to city, and then he learned to raise his social state. However, he was a child born in a blacksmith family and there’s a wide gap between him and the upper class. Finally, he lost all of his greatexpectations and went back to his hometown as ordinary people. Fortunately, he met his lover, Estella, in Satis House and they left there together at the end of the story. In the book, my favorite character is Joe, Pip’s brother in law. He was a blacksmith and belonged to the lower social class. However, he possessed some good qualities that made him noble. For example, though Joe didn’t know any word, he thought highly of Pip when Pip tried to write him a letter. What’s more, Pip’s sister always c onsidered Pip as the burden of their family but Joe always believed that his brother can become successful. No matter how unkindly he was treated, Joe was always family to others. Undoubtedly, it’s Joe’s noble qualitythat prevents Pip from becoming someone snobbish. In my opinion, the story of Pip is really attractive while the writing style is also special. For example, Dickens used simile and metaphor for many times in his book. When Joe visited Pip, Dickens wrote that Joe had taken his hat as a bird’s nest with egg in. I think it’s hard to show the inner world of characters as well as feeling because those things are really abstract. On the other hand, if we write it directly, that may be boring and childish. And by using simile, Dickens transforms the abstract feeling into visual language, with which we can use our imagination to enjoy the story much more easily. I think that we can also make good use of Dickens’s outstanding skills to improve our writing. After reading “Great Expectations”, many people complained that the class difference will always result in tragedy and they think that we should try to destroy those barriers. However, I think the massage that Dickens wants to deliver is that we should always be friendly,warm-hearted and optimistic. With these qualities, we can always lead a happy and comfortable life like Joe even though we don’t have much money.篇三:《远大前程》英文读后感作文Class one Student No.10 Name: Anna Wang Great Expectation was written by Charles Dickens (1812-1870), one of the most popular writers of all the time, who created some of the best-known characters in English literature. 《远大前程》英文读后感1In this summer holidays, I read a book called < Great Expectations>, it was written by Charles Dickens, one of the most famous English writers. He wrote lots of wonderful novels. This book is one of his compositions.People always like to compare with their friends. It is a big foible of all the people. If other people have a lot of money, we also want to be rich. If all the people around us are poor , we never mind that we are very poor, too. we will not ashamed because of our folly. This is a social problem. If we never possess anything, we will not mind we lost some thing. Since we don’t want to be very rich ,we will not feel despond because poor. The protagonist of this novel is Pip (Handel)。
《远大前程》英语读后感
《远大前程》英语读后感English:"Upon finishing the book "Great Expectations," I was struck by the tragic yet hopeful themes woven throughout the plot. The story follows the life of a young boy named Pip as he navigates the challenges of class, wealth, and love in 19th century England. One of the most poignant aspects of the novel is the exploration of ambition and its consequences. Pip's desire to rise above his humble origins leads him down a path of deceit, betrayal, and ultimately, self-discovery. The characters in the book are richly developed, from the kind-hearted Joe Gargery to the enigmatic Miss Havisham, each playing a crucial role in shaping Pip's journey. Through Pip's trials and triumphs, Charles Dickens masterfully explores the complexity of human nature, the fluidity of identity, and the redemptive power of love. Overall, "Great Expectations" is a timeless classic that resonates with readers of all ages, reminding us that true greatness lies not in material wealth or status, but in the kindness of our hearts and the authenticity of our actions."中文翻译:"在读完《远大前程》这本书之后,我被这部小说中编织的悲剧性但充满希望的主题深深触动。

On the contrary, he left from his home with Pip/s friends. Pip just wanted to be a gentleman. He abandoned a lot than he got. I cant understand why he do it in this way. I think its not worth at all. If one person dont like you or not respect you,you neednt do everything for her. So it made me quite sad.I feel sorry for Pip. He had a very difficult life... Miss Havisham is alsoa character who left me a deep impression .She was a poor lady. Her mother died young. Her farther was very rich and very proudwith only one child, Miss Havisham, is his first wife.In fact, Miss Havisham should have a nice life, but her wedding was destroyed by her fiance. He broke her heart and she was angry. She wanted to retaliate all men. She was really a kind woman. But she chose a wrong way to continue her life. Miss Havisham wanted to hurt other persons. And she had done. This was not good for her. Only made her feel a little comfortable but there were also more victims in the world. The above is what I get from the novel in the textbook and to conclude my opinion in one sentence, I should say that people should not depend on others.。

英文原著阅读报告greatexpectations远大前程第一篇:英文原著阅读报告 great expectations 远大前程Great ExpectationsIntroductionThe novel I read this time is “Great Expectations” written by Charles Dickens(1812-1870).He is the greatest representative of English critical realism.Dickens was bornin a poor family. At the age of 12, his father was put in prison and young Dickens was sentto work in a factory. From 1827 to 1829, Dickens worked as a clerk in a low firm and lateras a newspaper reporter.Dickens was horned by the Queen of England three months beforehis death on June 9, 1810.The words of his grave read as follows “by his death, one ofEngland’s greatest writers is lost to the world.”He has many maste rpieces, such as “A tale ofcities” “David Copperfield” “Hard time” “Oliver Twist” and so on.“Great Expectations”is one of his masterpieces. The story in this book happened in middle of 19 century and itreflects the gap between the rich and the poor in the capitalistic society. The summary of the bookThis story tells us about a young man who wished for the unreal/imaginary lives, andeventually his hope was extinguished by the real life.Pip was an unfortunate boy.Hisparents both died when he was a baby.He was brought upby his elder sister and herhusband Joe Gargery.Joe was kind to Pip and he also wanted Pip to be a good blacksmith. But the emergence of Estella has changed his life.He fell in love with Estella and he wanted to be a gentleman for her. Then a mysterious person came to help him to realize his greatexpectations. At first Pip thought that it was Miss Havisham, a strange woman made plansfor him.But at last, it proved that an escaped convict who he had helped when he was alittle boy was his benefactor. When the escaped convict was arrested again, his expectationswere at an end. Finally he realized that he only wanted to be a gentleman but he had ignoredhis old friends. He came to the real life again eventually. After suffering so many pains heand Estella came together at last.My view on this story“Great Expectations”, I think there is an irony included in this title. It relates to some unrealistic dreams. From this novel, I have learnt a lot.Firstly, I pick up several lessons from Pip.One can have great dreams, but we should achieve our dreams by our own effort instead of depending on other people. In this story, Pip had an unrealistic dream. He didn’t want to be a poor blacksmith like Joe.He wanted to be upper class people, to be a gentleman and he imagined that there was someone had made a plan for him.It is true that Abel Magwitch helped him secretly. But when Abel Magwitch was arrested, it put an end to Pip’s great expectations. He had nothing left. And in this book, Herbert and Pip form a poignant contrast.Herbert made great efforts to realize his dreams. In the end, his business was doingwell, and his company had offices overseas. Therefore, we should realize that if we want to achieve something or fulfill one of our ambitions, we must make efforts by ourselves. There is no one in the world that makes plans for us.And there is no short cut for success.Secondly, I have learned from Pip’s experience that we should be grateful to others. We know that Pip was brought up by his sister and Joe.And Biddy was also friendly to him when he was at home. But when he was helped by a mysterious person, he moved to London to learn being a gentleman. He began to be proud and look down upon those people at home.He wanted to forget his poor life and his poor friends. But when h is “great expectations” were ruined, it was still those people who helped him out of trouble. However, when he began to realize it, his sister has died;it was too late to say thanks to her. What I want to say is that no matter how successful we are, we should not be proud;we should not forget the people who had helped us, and return for them.If I have learned anything about giving thanks, it is this: give it now.Don’t hesitate until it is too late to give our thanks.Thirdly, I also learn some lessons from Miss Havisham, She is a woman full of hatred, and she lived in hatred for so many years. She brought Estella up in order to revenge on man.I think what she did is not worth at all.On one hand, she was not in real happiness, although she revenged on other people. On the other hand, she had ruined Estella’s life.In addition, she also made other men miserable. As for as I’m concerned, if I was Miss Havisham, I will choose another different kind of life.I will make myself live better than before to prove that I can live better without that man. From her experience, I think we should learn to forgive, learn to give up some bad things that had happened. No matter what had happened in the past, we should not be always lost in the pastand we are supposed to look forward, and continue our new life. There is no doubt that if she had chosen a positive way, she will have a satisfactory life. What’s more, when it comes to Estella, I want to say that we should live our own life, and do not only live up to others’ expectations. We kno w that, Estella was brought up by Miss Havisham to revenge on man.She did everything that Miss Havisham told her.We can say that she was “made” by Miss Havisham, and she was proud, cold.At last, following Miss havisham’s requirements she married to a man s he didn’t love at all.I think she lived an unhappy life. She only did as other people told her.And she didn’t do something what she liked.I think this kind of life is meaningless. We should have our freedom. It occurred to me that nowadays, parents have high expectations on their children. They decide so many things for their children without getting their children’s permission.I think children should have their choice of life.Parents should not put their children into cage.It is wise for them to set their children free to look for their own sky.In a word, from this book, I have learnt how to be myself, how to realize my dreams and how to live my own life.第二篇:远大前程(英文)Great Expectations——远大前程In thistterm , I read a book called 《 Great Expectations》, it was written by Charles Dickens, one of the most famous English writers. He wrote lots of wonderful novels. This book is one of his compositions.People always like to compare with their friends. It is a big foible of all the people. If other people have a lot of money, we also want to be rich.If all the people around us are poor , we never mind that we are very poor, too.we will not ashamed because of our folly. This is a social problem. If we never possessanything, we will not mind we lost some thing.Since we don’t want to be very rich ,we will not feel despond because poor. The protagonist of this novel is Pip(Handel). His parents died when he was a baby. His sister had brought him up ‘by hand’.His sister married to Joe Gargery, the village blacksmith. They didn’t have much money, and Pip never went to school to study. But he was often very happy.Because all of his friends are like him.It isn’t very unfortunate to them, this is their lives. But by a chance, Pip helped a convict;he gave much food to him. Then he met Miss Havisham, a very strange old woman and she was very rich.Four years later, Miss Havisham wants Pip to be removed from his home and educated as a gentleman who expects inherit a fortune when he grow up.After hearing that.Pip started to despise his poor friends. He even feel ashamed because he live with the poor man.Pip’s ‘great expectations’ destroyed his life. This novel told us that we cannot compare with others.Don’t feel envy at the others money. And if one day you be very rich , please don’t despise your poor fr iends.第三篇:远大前程英文读后感远大前程英文读后感一:Great Expectations“Great expectations” is one of Dicken’s most maturest works. After Dicken had experienced large part of meaningful life, he had a deeper cognition for people, environment, as well as the life which he had gone through. And all the mature cognitions are included in this writing---Great expectations.pip was brought up by his sister who was unpleasant as well as crude and her friendly blacksmith husband—Joe.Joe himself had arranged a common hard but satisfied path for pip to go through, and on the other hand, pip beheld this as his highest goal to achieve. But the two things which he had experienced later had changed hispursue and his fate as well.Met Abel Magwith(an escaped convict)in the swamp, and unwillingly helped him out of danger by stealing food from his own home.If say that had changed his attitude for material life, then, his introduction to Miss Havisham, an aging woman who had been jilted at the alter and Estella who had been brought up by Havisham only to revenge for her own pain had brought vast shock for his world of spirit.Aspiring to be a gentleman despite his humble born, pip fortunately or unfortunately received a fund of wealth from an unknown source and being sent to London with a lawyer. From then on, he became a gentleman without question at the price of losing everything. The title of this book is ‘Great expectations” which make an impression on us that the character would have great expectations just as the title goes. But in fact this title has a tone of sarcastic on the other way around. This story full of quirkiness from the very beginning to the end, the relations among characters are anfractuous as well which actually attracted me a lot.One of the paragraphs, which I appreciate most implicatively as well as beautifully expresses the feeling between pip and Estella.“We are friends,” said I, rising and bending over her, as she rose from the bench.‘And will continue friends apart.” Said Estella.I took his hand in mine, and we went out of the ruined place;and, as the morning mists had risen long ago when I first let the forge, so, the evening mists were rising now, and in all the broad expanse of tranquil light they showed to me, I saw no shadow of another parting from her.At the view of language, this works had achieved a step o f highest, Dicken had made this writing plain and fluent as well, which surely can attract lots of readers and high comments. To be frank, I really impressed by this art of beauty. So I like Dicken’s works very much.远大前程英文读后感二:To be simpleAfter reading the whole book of “Great Expectations” written by Charles Dickens, I can’t find suitable words to express my thoughts completely.First of all, I am attracted by the excellent literary talent of Charles Dickens. The descriptions of the details are just right for the foundation of the background. The design of the story also brings me shock. To me, it is not only a good story, but also a lesson of the life that I am experiencing. But, what I have learnt from the book is not the main idea that Charles Dickens wanted to show. What impresses me deeply is only a supporting role —pared with the life of pip, what Joe has experienced is so ordinary. He is an ordinary blacksmith, an ordinary husband, an ordinary brother, an ordinary friend, even an ordinary person! However, just such an ordinary person brings me a great special feeling. In his world, life is so simple. He is far away from the complex world which is polluted by the ugly soul of people.May be, “kind-hearted” is the biggest adv antage of him, which is also the biggest shortage of him in his daily life.Different from all the other figures in the book, Joe’s life is so simple and his thoughts also stay pure after he experiences whatever sufferings that life gives him.In my opinion, his childhood is miserable. What he has experienced must be unhappy and sorrowful. He grows up in such a family, meets so much violence(May be, in that period, it is common)。

《远大前程》英语读后感
《远大前程》英语读后感Reflections on "Great Expectations"Charles Dickens's "Great Expectations" stands as a timeless testament to the complexities of human nature and the challenges of social class. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century England, this novel weaves a captivating tale of Pip, a young orphan who rises from the ashes of poverty to the heights of wealth and privilege, only to discover the hollowness of his "great expectations."What initially catches the reader's attention is the vivid portrayal of Dickens's London, a city that is both vibrant and oppressive, a place where dreams are forged and shattered in equal measure. Pip's childhood in the marshland, with his sister and the kindly Joe Gargery, is a poignant reminder of the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. His early encounters with Estella, the beautiful and privileged daughter of Miss Havisham, plant the seed of his "great expectations" – a desire toescape his humble beginnings and ascend to a better life.As Pip's fortunes change, so does his perspective. His introduction to the upper classes through the mysterious Mr. Jaggers and the extravagant lifestyle of his newfound benefactor, Mr. Pocket, opens up a world of possibilities. The allure of this new life is irresistible, and Pip's transformation from a naive boy to a sophisticated young man is both fascinating and heartbreaking. He begins to internalize the values of his new social circle, adopting their snobbery and prejudice. His relationship with Joe and his sister deteriorates as he distances himself from his roots, a tragic irony that Dickens explores with profound empathy. The novel's central theme of social class and itsimpact on individual identity is explored through multiple narratives. Pip's rise and fall, his relationships with those above and below him on the social ladder, and his eventual realization that wealth and status cannot fulfill his emotional voids are all poignant commentaries on the social hierarchy of Victorian England. Dickens's subtlecritique of this system is both pointed and compassionate, revealing the cruelty of class divides while also acknowledging the resilience of the human spirit. The character of Estella, too, is a complex and fascinating study. Her own tortured past and her subsequent rejection of love in favor of a cold and calculating exterior mask a deep-seated longing for affection and acceptance. Her relationship with Pip, fraught with misunderstandings and hurt, is a tragic reminder of the cost of suppressing one's emotions and the importance of true love and companionship.Dickens's writing style is a masterpiece of understated emotion and subtle humor. His use of language is both evocative and powerful, painting vivid pictures in the reader's mind. The novel's narrative structure, with its intertwining threads and unexpected revelations, keeps the reader engaged and guessing until the final pages."Great Expectations" is not just a story about social class and aspiration; it is a profound exploration of thehuman heart and its capacity for both good and evil. Dickens's portrayal of Pip's journey from innocence to jadedness and his eventual redemption is both heartbreaking and hopeful, leaving the reader with a profound understanding of the true value of life's "great expectations." This novel, published over a century ago, remains as relevant and engaging today as it was then, a testament to the enduring power of Dickens's storytelling genius.。

远大前程英文读后感1Dickens is not a writer disdaining women. Instead,he loves, respects and takes care of them. However, in his novels, he unconsciously degrades women and puts them inferior to men. Great Expectations is evidence to my thesis. There are three aspects in this novel that I believe this kind of thought of Dickens is revealed. The first one is that women are fragile. That is not because those women are in lack of will, but that they need surviving abilities and that of self-survival and struggle against destiny. They always turn to men. That can be called hero saving the beauty。
This notion originated in the Greek tales but is still adopted successively. The only difference between them lies in the plot and structure. Estella is adopted and trained to break men’s hearts by Miss Havisham. Hav isham revenges men and marries Estella to an unworthy guy though Pip deeply loves Estella. Nothing can be bitterer than see his lover married to another guy for a man. Pip really fell into the despair of losing Estella. However, Estella suffers a lot and begins to regret for her initial choice for her spouse and begins to treasureThen comes my second point. Facing destiny, women are physically and intellectually inferior to men. Actually it does not mean they have an inferior intelligence, but that it seems so. Orwe can say that both men and women have the same potential of intelligence, but women never show a lot. God creates everyone equally, but not everyone is granted the same approaches to success or achievements. Women are restricted to families, which restricts them from showing a lot. They can cook food well, which is one standard for their excellence but not the one for male. The novel goes this way since it implies the male consciousness. The ordinary intelligence of women in marriage and love is exposed completely. Havisham is abandoned on her wedding day, but she keeps the room like the day she got married, while on the other hand she tries every means to revenge men. Bearing these two conflictive thoughts in mind, Havisham certainly fails to live her own life out of the control or influence from male. The discipline for women is my third point. A feminist De Bufuwa says: One is called woman because she is ‘made’ not ‘born’。

《远大前程》英文读后感篇1Thoughts on Great ExpectationsDuring the last month, I have been reading the novel named Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. I set up my mind to finish reading it for the simple reason that I have read the Chinese version of this great novel and I was deeply attracted by the story. The main character in this novel is Pip and the whole story goes like this: Pip was a orphan and was brought up by his sister “by hand”. His sister Mrs. Joe was very strict with him while his brother-in-law treat him kindly. As a result, the two developed a intimate relationship. Since Pip was asked to visit Miss Havishams’s house, his mind and his fate began to change. In Miss Havishams’s home, Pip saw her adopted daughter Estella and fell in love with her at the first sight. Then he was determined to be well-educated and become a gentleman in order to deserve the beautiful girl Estella. And much to his delight, he was given a large sum of money and an opportunity to study abroad by an anonymous person. After a period of time, his great expectations came true and he became a gentleman at last. However, he found out that the money was offered by the criminal he had saved when he was young. He felt ashamed and didn’t want to use the money any more. What’s worse, the criminal Magwitch escaped from prison to visit Pip and was noticed by the police. At last, Magwitch was sentenced to death and Pip led a normallife. The beautiful lady became a widow as her husband died. But Pip still loved her and promised to be friends with her all the same. This ending is a bit reaasuring.Among those several characters in the novel, my favourite is Magwitch. He was homeless and poor when he was young and he used to be put into prison several times. No one cared about him, so when little Pip saved him by giving him some food, he felt moved. And he bore Pip’s help in his mind. When he was exiled overseas, he was determined to make a lot of money and help Pip become a gentleman. He worked hard and saved every coin he could, and then sent it to Pip. He did all of these secretly in order to prevent little Pip from being embarrassed. After Pip became a real gentleman, Magwitch returned to England in secret only to see whether Pip had led a good life. What we can find from him is deep love for Pip. Although the society has deserted him, he is not deserted by himself. Different from Miss Havishams who is black-hearted, Magwitch is like a father. He showed his love to Pip without any hesitation. He was just like Pip’s father. This is why I admire him very much. Then when I look back into our society, I find that some parents are not as good as the criminal Magwitch. Cases are that parents push their children to work hard in order to be admitted into the college where they were eager to go when they were young. This usually leads to two consequences. One is that the children are exerted too much pressure and they go to extremes. The other is that their children do as they are told to and don’t have their independent thinking. They lack the comprehensive abilities to cope with fierce competition in today’s society. In other words, they are likely to survive in this competitive world.God is equal to everyone. When Magwitch knew that Estellawas his daughter and had been loved by Pip, he felt relieved. I am also relieved because one good turn deserves another.《远大前程》英文读后感篇2Great Expectations is a novel by Charles Dickens, a famous writer from England. It is the story of the orphan Pip’s life. The character in this novelgaveme the deep impression was Pip.He fell in love with Estella. Educating himself for the girl,Pip studied as hard as he could. Why did he love Estella so much? Not for her beautiful face, her treasure . Pip paid out so much for the love.AlthoughEstella didn't treat him well and even that she didn't respect him at all! She put the food for him as a dog,but he didn't hate her. On the contrary, he left from his home with Pip/s friends. Pip just wanted to be a gentleman. He abandoned a lot than he got. I can't understand why he do it in this way. I think it's not worth at all. If one person don't like you or not respect you,you needn't do everything for her. The above is what I get from the novel in the textbook and to conclude my opinion in one sentence, I should say that people should not depend on others.《远大前程》英文读后感篇3"Great Expectations" has been considered to be one of Charles Dickens’ most mature and relatively late works. Having experienced a wealth of human life, Dickens got a profound understanding of human-being, the surrounding environment and his life experiences while all his mature thinking and understanding were summarized into the book "Great Expectations". The original meaning of the work’s title in fact is a heritage, but when it was translated into Chinese it gave me an impression that the title shows the hero of the story had Great Expectations. However, reading over the book I realized that this "Great Expectations" takes an ironic band——it should be said that the theme of this work not only told the story of orphan Pip who wanted to be the ideal first-class disillusionment. If one does think so, he holds a wrong understanding of the great significance why Dickens creative the work. The hero Pip lived with his sister’s family. Though their life was hard, Pip didn’t wish to be a first-class person his vision was to be a blacksmith like his brother-in-law, his sister’s husband. The reason why he changed his mind and was eager to be a first-class person later was the changing of environment——he met Miss Harvisham, Estella and some other complex people. As we know one of Dickens's philosophy thoughts is environment takes a deep impact to humans’ ideological and the story expresses his viewthat different environment creates different people. In short, I think the work was not arbitrarily written, but was based on the 10 works before aggregating Dickens’ thoughts. What is more, Dickens had put his outlook on life, his views of philosophy and ethics into the great creation. The story is pided into three phases of Pip's life expectations. The first "expectation" is allotted 19 chapters, and the other two 20 chapters each in the 59-chapter work. In some editions, the chapter numbering reverts to Chapter One in each expectation, but the original publication and most modern editions number the chapters consecutively from one to 59. At the end of chapters 19 and 39, readers are formally notified that they have reached the conclusion of a phase of Pip's expectations. In the first expectation, Pip lives a humble existence with his ill-tempered older sister and her strong but gentle husband, Joe Gargery. Pip is satisfied with this life and his warm friends until he is hired by Miss Havisham and Estella. From that time on, Pip aspires to leave behind his simple life and be a gentleman. This life is suddenly turned upside down when he is visited by a London attorney, Mr. JaggersThe second stage of Pip's expectations has Pip in London, learning the details of being a gentlemen, having tutors, fine clothing, and joining cultured society. At the end of this stage, Pip is introduced to his benefactor, again changing his world. 《远大前程》英文读后感篇4After reading the whole b ook of “Great Expectations” written by Charles Dickens, I can’t find suitable words to express my thoughts completely.First of all, I am attracted by the excellent literary talent of Charles Dickens. The descriptions of the details are just right forthe foundation of the background. The design of the story also brings me shock. To me, it is not only a good story, but also a lesson of the life that I am experiencing. But, what I have learnt from the book is not the main idea that Charles Dickens wanted to show. What impresses me deeply is only a supporting role ―Joe. Compared with the life of Pip, what Joe has experienced is so ordinary. He is an ordinary blacksmith, an ordinary husband, an ordinary brother, an ordinary friend, even an ordinary person! However, just such an ordinary person brings me a great special feeling. In his world, life is so simple. He is far away from the complex world which is polluted by the ugly soul of people. May be, “kind-hearted” is the biggest advantage of him, which is also the biggest shortage of him in his daily life.Different from all the other figures in the book, Joe’s life is so simple and his thoughts also stay pure after he experiences whatever sufferings that life gives him. In my opinion, his childhood is miserable. What he has experienced must be unhappy and sorrowful. He grows up in such a family, meets so much violence(May be, in that period, it is common)To say it exaggeratedly, there must be bad influences on his young heart. But, what he does surprises me one more time. He treats his sufferings in another way―to be sincere.I can’t really understand what he is thinking about, but I am deeply touched by his behavior. His tolerant with his wife―Pip’s sister, his friendly affection with Pip, even his sympathy with a prisoner that all express one thing ― sincerity. He is the harbor of soul for Pip. There is such a great difference between Joe and Pip’s ambition. What he tells us is that to be simple is the key to your happy life.Optimism is another spirit in his soul. He never gives in to the difficulties that he meets. Maybe, in his dictionary of life, there is no word with the meaning of shrinking back. He never worries about his lower grade life ,but faces up to it. For example, he only can read ”J” and ”O” befor e, because he has no chance to study in his childhood. But finally, he sets his mind to study and can write letters by himself.Although Joe is a person with only a little knowledge, what he owns is far more precious than many learned men. His pure heart will bring him great expectations. What he teaches us is that never to be taken away your pure heart and optimistic attitude towards life. There will be nothing difficult or miserable when you treat them with a sincere heart. To be simple, what you will gain is far beyond your imagination and you will find that life is just a game which is always filled with happiness and bliss!《远大前程》英文读后感篇5Impression of a book of Great Expectation Went to the bookstore during theholiday, I chose a book from a lot of world masterpieces, named Great Expectation, when I pick up this book, I have not expected that such an English book will have a so great impact on me, making my thoughts and feelings very deep, I think that theform and content of this book are all very outstanding. After much hesitation and deeply thought, I finally decided to borrowGreat Expectations from the small library.Great Expectations is about love, family, and rejection asPip and Miss Havisham have bothbeen rejected in certain ways. Pip is a boy around 13 years old, easy to fright, and goesthrough his life suffering lots of sadness. He is in love with a girl named Estella and wantsher to find his love, but for him being shy and not showing himself to her, it makes it veryhard for him.Great Expectations was the penultimate novel pleted by the most popular novelist ofVictorian England,Charles Dickens. Born in Kent,England, in 1812 to a family of modestmeans but great pretensions,Dickens’s early life was marked by both humiliation andambition. Dickens never forgot the period of financial crisis during his childhood, whenfollowing his father’s bankruptcy, he was taken out of school and forced to work in ashoepolish warehouse.Pip meets an escaped convict,Magwitch, and gives him food, in an encounter that is tohaunt both their lives. Moreover, thosewords andsentences are so beautiful and meaningful that I even took them down carefully inmy notebook. By reading them no less than three times,I have learned not only some newphrases and sentences, but also a philosophy of life.Among the characters, which impressed me most are not Pip and Estella who should be regardedas the leading roles, but Joe and Magwitch. I feel awfully sorry that I was not brave enoughto read the original edition that is as thick as a brick. When he talked about his heavydrinking father who hit him a lot,he said he had a lot of love. Faced with his rude wife, hewould rather seem a bit weak or foolish than stand up to her and fight for himself. Knowingpeacockish Pip was ashamed of his uneducated manners, he left sadly and quietly. The worldrushes on over the strings of the lingering heart making the music of sadness. But when hewas informed of Pip’s illness,he immediately came to take good care of Pip.He is alwayscontributing everything and requiring nothing. Such a man is Joe, kind, tolerant andselfless. "Nothing is so mild and gentle as courage, nothing so cruel and pitiless ascowardice," says a wise author. However, why do I appreciate Magwitch, the bad guy? You may wonder. Indeed, Magwitch did alot of evil things when he was young. But how can you be unmoved when you get toknow thatthe old man kept himself going just by thinking of the boy who once did him a small favor? He lost his only daughter and Pip had no parents,so he considered himself as the boy’ssecond father, making up his mind to help his dear boy became a gentleman. He lived with the fear of death all his life. Who shuts love out,in turnshall be shut outfrom love. However, thankfully, because Pip finally realized his goodheart, his ending was peaceful.Dickens has Pip as the writer and first person narrator of this account of his life'sexperiences, and the entire story is understood to have been written as a retrospective, rather than as a present tense narrative or a diary or journal. Still, though Pip "knows" howall the events in the story will turn out,he uses only very subtle foreshadowing so that welearn of events only when the Pip in the story does. Pip does, however, use the perspectiveof the bitter lessons he's learned to ment acidly on various actions and attitudes in hisearlier life.I know how to fully understand this novel, twice is far from enough. Pip,Estella, MissHavisham,Biddy even Mr Wemmick, every single character has a story that is well worth myattention.I love this novel so much that I am determined to read the original edition oneday. Believe me. But before that day es,I willsee the movie Great Expectations first.Search for knowledge, read more, sit on your front porch and admire the view without payingattention to your needs. 《远大前程》英文读后感篇7Impression of a book of 'Great Expectation' Went to the bookstore during theholiday, I chose a book from a lot of world masterpieces, named Great Expectation, when I pick up this book, I have not expected that such an English book will have a so great impact on me, making my thoughts and feelings very deep, I think that theform and content of this book are all very outstanding.

Great Expectation 远大前程读后感 英文版
Great Expectation –Brings you to philosophy of lovePip, an orphan brought up by his sister, fell in love with Estella who was a noble girl when was employed by Miss Havisham. After the hope of entering the upper class varies from initiation to disillusionment, pip finally return to his original life. Pip’s “great expectation” turned to foam as well. But he found himself back and made peace with Estella. This is a fascinating novel that love run throughout the whole book. There are three loves in this book through which we can see Dickens’s view of love and his criticism of the society at that time.Pip & Estella“You are my good and evil. You are the best fantasy of my life”. Pip knew his love for Estella would hinder his expectation, lose control, destroy hope, and ultimately be destined to dismay and disappointment but he still plunged into it. However, that is a society of distinct bourgeois hierarchy which determines their love was unequal. So, when Pip was into Estella, his first feeling is a deep sense of inferiority. And that’s why Pip accepted stranger’s financial aid without any hesitation in order to bridge their gap. At first glance, this is a story about a teenager whose young dream shattered and loss of love; Take a closer look, though, and it revealed the corruption and darkness of the upper class and Pip represented the whole underclass.Havisham & CompeysonLove, sometimes let people rebirth, and sometimes push people to the death. Havisham, a middle-age woman, who contained a large amount of her father’s wealth was deceived by Compeyson who aimed for her money. From then on, her heart was dead and all the sense to the rest of her life was to cultivate her adopted daughter as a tool to retaliate man. The loss of love leaded her to abnormality of personality. But finally, Havisham chose to lay down the hatred and made a plea for forgiveness from Pip and Estella. The illusionary love was Dickens’s criticism of bourgeoisie’s detrimental effect. In the meantime, justice and kindness will never be absent.Joe & BiddyTheir love was plain but brilliant in the bottom society. And they were sober person in the chaotic society. Joe’s forbearance, kindness and optimism really attract the readers. He treated every person as his friend equally. Biddy was full of wisdom and benevolence. Joe and Biddy knew that love is irrelevant to money and status but sincerity and the touch of two souls. In a word, Love is unrelated to surrender and power and not go with the stream. Only built on the premise of everyone is equal and after experiencing everything in life can love becomes mature and firm.。
The Report of Great Expectations名著《 远大前程》读书报告
Title: Great ExpectationsAuthor: Charles DickensClass: 外贸英语101班Name: 徐阿伟Number: 1007022024Ambition and Self-improvement in Great Expectations If I have known I would only be one of the countless college students ten years ago, I don’t know what I would feel when our teacher told us, “You have great expectations.” at that time.It was interesting that we really had great ambitions when we heard it. Simply because we believed, we have “great expectations”. But what really great expectations are? Studying abroad? Getting a good job? Or making up a happy family? No one has a certain answer. These also the questions I had when I saw the book Great Expectations.Great Expectations is a novel by Charles Dickens (1812-1870), the most popular English novelist of the Victorian era, and one of the most popular of all time. The novel was firstly published serially in England from December 1860 to August 1861; published in book form in England and America in 1861.The story begins in Kent and London, England in mid-nineteenth century.Pip is the main character of this book and through the story of him we could get the theme of the book. And I think ambition and self-improvement encourages much of Pip’s development. At heart, Pip is an idealist; whenever he can concei ve of something that is better than what he already has, he immediately desires to obtain the improvement. When he sees Satis House, he longs to be a wealthy gentleman; when he thinks of his moral shortcomings, he longs to be good; when he realizes that he cannot read, he longs to learn how. Pip’s desire for self-improvement is the main source of the novel’s title: because he believes in the possibility of advancement in life, he has “great expectations” about his future.Ambition and self-improvement take three forms in Great Expectations—moral, social, and educational; these motivate Pip’s behavior throughout the novel.First, Pip desires moral self-improvement. He is extremely hard on himself when he acts immorally and powerful guilt spurs him to act better in the future. When he leaves for London, for instance, he torments himself about having behaved so wretchedly toward Joe and Biddy.Second, Pip desires social self-improvement. In love with Estella, he longs to become a member of her social class, and, encouraged by Mrs. Joe and Pumblechook, he entertains fantasies of becoming a gentleman. Significantly, Pip’s life as a gentleman is no more satisfying—and certainly no more moral—than his previous life as a blacksmith’s apprentice.Third, Pip desires educational improvement. This desire is deeply connected to his social ambition and longing to marry Estella: a full education is a requirement of being a gentleman. As long as he is an ignorant country boy, he has no hope of social advancement. Pip understands this fact as a child, when he learns to read at Mr. Wopsle’s aunt’s school, and as a young man, when he takes lessons from Matthew Pocket. Ultimately, through the examples of Joe, Biddy, and Magwitch, Pip learns that social and educational improvemen t are irrelevant to one’s real worth and that conscience and affection are to be valued above erudition and social standing. After reading this book, I found, maybe we don’t have a certain answer for what is great expectations, but ambition and self-improvement are what could help us get great expectations.。

远大前程GreatExpectations第一篇:远大前程Great ExpectationsGreat ExpectationsCharles DickensSetting: London, England, 1800sBackground Information:Pip lives with his very strict, martinet older sister, Mrs.Joe, and her husband, Joe Gargery.Mrs.Joe is abusive and is the dominant force in the household, having raised Pip “by hand.” Joe is a kind and caring role model for Pip, whose parents died right after his birth.Pip ventures to the churchyard to visit their graves often. This very place is where this classic tale unfolds.Characters:Pip(Philip Pirrip)adopted daughter of Miss Havisham. She was brought up on Miss Havisham's desire to get revenge on men.She is condescending despite her beauty.Miss HavishamPip's brother-in-law.He's a gentle giant who is Pip's best friend and father figure. He is a hard worker and a very moral man.Abel MagwitchPip's older sister. She raised Pip “by hand” using the “tickler.”Herbert Pocketlawyer who defends Magwitch.Magwitch orders him to keep track of Pip's finances.Jaggers serves as Pip's guardian.Plot Summary:Pip lives with his older sister and her husband. One day, while visiting his parents' grave, Pip encounters a convict, Magwitch, who he helps escape by providing him with a file and food.Pip is hired as a playmate for Miss Havisham's adopted daughter, Estella, who he falls in love with.Pip finds out that he has a benefactor and assumes that it is Miss Havisham. He moves to thecity of London with great expectations of increasing his social status.During this metamorphosis, Pip neglects his friendships with Biddy and Joe.As time passes, Pip meets his true benefactor, Magwitch, who made a fortune after being exiled from England.Magwitch wanted to repay Pip for helping him escape earlier in the novel.Pip in return for the large fortune must keep Magwitch in hiding near a river, since he is forbidden in England.Pip learns that Estella, who he has long obsessed over, has married Bentley Drummle.Suddenly, Miss Havisham's estate goes on fire, and Pip courageously saves Miss Havisham. It is then revealed that Magwitch is Estella's father. In an attempt to flee, Magwitch is caught, but dies before his conviction.Pip falls ill, and is nursed back to health by Joe, who marries Biddy after the death of Mrs.Joe.It is also revealed that Estella is educated by suffering, and the two go off on their separate ways.Sub-Plots: Pip's obsession with Estella controls his life, actions, and ambitions.Pip's rescuing of Magwitch from the river. The instance with Molly and Jaggers.Molly is Jagger's lowly housemaid, yet she is the real mother of Estella.Magwitch is the real father.Possible Themes:1)GratitudeMiss Havisham suffers from having lived her entire life in the past3)ObsessionEstella resents Pip for not being refined.Pip is appalled by Magwitch's appearance and behavior.5)GreedPip envies Estella's wealth and social status.7)Loneliness-Pip often visits the graveyard where his parents are buried.Key Issues: Envy: Pip envies Estella for her social position and wealth. He is jealous that she takes her wealth for granted, as she lives with the money that he longs for.His “great expectation” in life is to achieve a higher standard of living, while cruel, heartless Estellawas born into it.This envy of Estella's wealth stays with Pip as he grows into a man, hidden in the back of his mind.Gratitude: Joe Gargery was Pip's greatest friend, yet Pip took him for granted. He did not show any signs of gratitude for Joe's constant friendship.Towards the end of the novel, Joe was the one who nursed Pip back to health.Ultimately, Pip realizes the trueness of his friendship with Joe, and eventually shows him the gratitude he deserves.Prejudice: Estella immediately looked down on Pip upon seeing how coarse his hands and boots were.Because of his poor social status, she did not accept him as an equal.Rather than seeing him as a playmate(or a possible future husband), Estella saw Pip as a victim for her cruelty. In Pip's adulthood, he was prejudiced against Magwitch for being so grimy and brutish. He was both appalled and embarrassed by the man who had given him his fortune.Maturity of Relationships: Pip ultimately matures when he takes care of Magwitch after the accident at the river. He discovers the importance and the goodness of what Magwitch had done for him.The relationship between Magwitch and Pip grows due to the Pip's maturity. The relationship between Pip and Joe also develops once Pip realizes how valuable of a friend Joe is.Morals and Life Applications:Great Expectations encompasses almost every aspect of the human condition. From this novel, one learns that true friendship is worth much more than material possessions.Wealth and social status does not necessarily guarantee happiness. In life, it is sometimes necessary to sacrifice one's illusions or fantasies to discover one's own inner worth. As displayed by the character of Miss Havisham, it is foolish to live in the past, because it is a selfish act.Not only did she harm herself, but Estella and Pip as well.In the end, Pip discovers that wealth and social position canbe corrupting to a person's morality.Ulitmately, Pip realized that he had to sacrifice his great expectations in order to preserve his morality and inner worth.第二篇:《远大前程》《远大前程》文学导读狄更斯(1812-1870)生活在英国由半封建社会向工业资本主义社会的过渡时期。

Great ExpectationsIntroductionThe novel I read this time is “Great Expectations” written by Charles Dickens (1812-1870). He is the greatest representative of English critical realism. Dickens was born in a poor family. At the age of 12, his father was put in prison and young Dickens was sent to work in a factory. From 1827 to 1829, Dickens worked as a clerk in a low firm and later as a newspaper reporter. Dickens was horned by the Queen of England three months before his death on June 9, 1810. The wo rds of his grave read as follows “by his death, one of England’s greatest writers is lost to the world.”He has many masterpieces, s uch as “A tale of cities” “David Copperfield” “Hard time” “Oliver Twist” and so on. “Great Expectations” is one of his masterpieces. The story in this book happened in middle of 19 century and it reflects the gap between the rich and the poor in the capitalistic society. The summary of the bookThis story tells us about a young man who wished for the unreal/imaginary lives, and eventually his hope was extinguished by the real life. Pip was an unfortunate boy. His parents both died when he was a baby. He was brought up by his elder sister and her husband Joe Gargery. Joe was kind to Pip and he also wanted Pip to be a good blacksmith. But the emergence of Estella has changed his life. He fell in love with Estella and he wanted to be a gentleman for her. Then a mysterious person came to help him to realize his great expectations. At first Pip thought that it was Miss Havisham, a strange woman made plans for him. But at last, it proved that an escaped convict who he had helped when he was a little boy was his benefactor. When the escaped convict was arrested again, his expectations were at an end. Finally he realized that he only wanted to be a gentleman but he had ignored his old friends. He came to the real life again eventually. After suffering so many pains he and Estella came together at last.My view on this story“Great Expectations”, I think there is an irony included in this title. It relates to some unrealistic dreams. From this novel, I have learnt a lot.Firstly, I pick up several lessons from Pip. One can have great dreams, but we should achieve our dreams by our own effort instead of depending on other people. In this story, Pip had an unrealistic dream. He didn’t want to be a poor blacksmith like Joe. He wanted to be upper class people, to be a gentleman and he imagined that there was someone had made a plan for him. It is true that Abel Magwitch helped him secretly. But when Abel Magwitch was arrested, it put an end to Pip’s great expectations. He ha d nothing left. And in this book, Herbert and Pip form a poignant contrast. Herbert made great efforts to realize his dreams. In the end, his business was doing well, and his company had offices overseas. Therefore, we should realize that if we want to achieve something or fulfill one of our ambitions, we must make efforts by ourselves. There is no one in the world that makes plans for us. And there is no short cut for success.Secondly, I have learned from Pip’s experience that we should be grateful to others. We know that Pip was brought up by his sister and Joe. And Biddy was also friendly to him when he was at home. But when he was helped by a mysterious person, he moved to London to learn being a gentleman. He began to be proud and look down upon those people at home. He wanted to forget his poor life and his poor friends. But when his “great expectations” were ruined, it was still those people who helped him out of trouble. However, when he began to realize it, his sister has died; it was too late to say thanks to her. What I want to say is that no matter how successful we are, we should not be proud; we should not forget the people who had helped us, and return for them. If I have learned anything about giving thanks, it is this: give it now .Don’t hesitate until it is too late to give our thanks.Thirdly, I also learn some lessons from Miss Havisham, She is a woman full of hatred, and she lived in hatred for so many years. She brought Estella up in order to revenge on man.I think what she did is not worth at all. On one hand, she was not in real happiness, although she revenged on other peo ple. On the other hand, she had ruined Estella’s life. In addition, she also made other men miser able. As for as I’m concerned, if I was Miss Havisham, I will choose another different kind of life. I will make myself live better than before to prove that I can live better without that man. From her experience, I think we should learn to forgive, learn to give up some bad things that had happened. No matter what had happened in the past, we should not be always lost in the past and we are supposed to look forward, and continue our new life. There is no doubt that if she had chosen a positive way, she will have a satisfactory life. What’s more, when it comes to Estella, I want to say that we should live our own life, and do not only live up to others’ expect ations. We know that, Estella was brought up by Miss Havisham to revenge on man. She did everything that Miss Havisham told her. We can say that she was “made” by Miss Havisham, and she was proud, cold. At last, following Miss havisham’s requirements she married to a man she didn’t love at all. I think she lived an unhappy life. She only did as other people told her. And she didn’t do something what she liked. I think this kind of life is meaningless. We should have our freedom. It occurred to me that nowadays, parents have high expectations on their children. They decide so many things for their children without getting their children’s permission. I think children should have their choice of life. Parents should not put their children into cage. It is wise for them to set their children free to look for their own sky.In a word, from this book, I have learnt how to be myself, how to realize my dreams and how to live my own life.。
