But he did not know about brushes before a visitor told him he needed one. In those days, a brush was made from camel’s hair. There were no camels nearby. Benjamin decided that cat hair would work instead. He cut some fur from the family cat to make a brush. The brush did not last long. Soon Benjamin needed more fur. Before long, the cat began to look ragged (蓬乱). His father said that the cat must be sick. Benjamin was forced to admit what he had been doing. The cat’s lot was about to improve. That year, one of Benjamin’s cousins, Mr. Pennington, came to visit. He was impressed with Benja min’s drawings. These were the first pictures and first real paint and brushes Benjamin had ever seen.In 1747, when Benjamin was nine years old, Mr. Pennington returned for another visit. He was amazed at what Benjamin had done with his gift. The boy began a landscape(风景) painting. William Williams, a well-known painter, came to see him work. Williams was impressed with Benjamin and gave him two classic books on painting to take home. The books were long and dull. Benjamin could read only a little, having been a poor student. But he later said,"Those two books were my companions by day, and under my pillow at night."While it is likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his introduction to classical paintings. Their contribution to the constant evolution of the English language should not be ignored.Ms Newstead put the changing nature of language down to social media where space is often small and messages are sent in a hurry. She told the Telegraph: “ I think because so many of our communications are by social media, there is a lot more sharing and words come to light a lot quicker than they used to.”The Collins list is put together by a panel of lexicographers and experts, who look at terms that are becoming increasingly used. There are around 4.5 billion words in the Collins Corpus, but between 10 and 12 are picked for the final list.2016|Collins ‘ Words of the YearBrexit: The withdrawal of the United Kingdom UnionDude food: Junk food considered particularly appealing to menHygge: A concept of creating a comfortable atmosphere thatpromotes well-beingJomo(joy of missing out): Pleasure gained when one decides to refuse a party invitation without any fear of missing the event.Mic drop: the act of pretending to drop a microphone after speakingSharenting: The habitual use of social media to share news and images of one’s childrenSnowflake generation: Young adults who are more likely to become angry than previous generationsThrow shade: To publicly show contempt(轻视)Trumpism: The policies advocated by the US politician Donald TrumpUberization : A business model where services are offered directly to customers usually by mobile technology51. These factors contribute to words getting shorter except .A. limited space in social mediaB. the hurry to send textsC. the younger generationD. evolution of EnglishBScientists said they have found evidence of a giant planet far out in our solar system. In a statement, the California Institute of Technology(Caltech) said this planet travels a strange “highly elongated orbit in the distan t solar system”.The discovery was made by two researchers at Caltech; Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown. They used mathematicalmodeling and computer simulations (模拟)to find the planet. So far, there have not been any direct observations of the planet.“My jaw hit the floor,” said astronomer Mike Brown, the moment he realized there might be a ninth planet. The scientists said it would take this planet 10,000to 20,000 years just to make one full orbit around the sun. The new planet, called “Planet Nine” has a mass about 10 times the size of Earth. It is believed that the planet orbits, or travels, around the sun from a great distance. The planet Neptune’s average distance to the sun is about 4.5 billion kilometers. But “Planet Nine” could be 20 times farther away from the sun than that. While they did not get a picture of “Planet Nine” yet, the scientists say they are using the biggest and best telescopes on Earth to try to find it.Brown and Batygin reported their finding in The Astronomical Journal. They say that this new planet is so large that there should be no doubt that it is a true planet, once they confirm it.Robert Massey is with the Royal Astronomical Society in London. He told AFP that planets have been predicted before, and then were not found. But, he said the work of the these researchers is definitely worth following up. “It would be a really exciting thing to find. At the moment it’s simply a prediction(预测).”54. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph5 mean?A. He felt quite shockedB. He felt on the floorC. He made a public speechD. He went on observing55. What can we know about “Planet Nine” from the text?A. It could be the ninth planet discovered since ancient timesB. It could be about 10 times as large as the earthC. It could travel around the Earth on a special orbitD. Its distance to the sun could be about 90 billion kilometers56. What’s Robert’s attitude towards the discovery of “Planet Nine”?A. doubtfulB. unclearC. worriedD. supportive57. What’s the best title for the text?A. The discovery of the largest planetB. The prediction of a ninth planet in solar systemC. Attitudes to “Planet Ninth” in the solar systemD. Values of finding “Planet Ninth” in the solar systemCI was in the garden with Augie, My four-year-old grandson, watching the bees. “Bees make honey,” I said. After a pause, Augie replied, “ How do they make the honey?” There is nothing like a child’s question for exposing the limits of a grandmother’s wisdom.“Actually, Augie, I don’t know,” I said.“But, Grandma, you have your phone,” he said. For Augie, a smart phone is as natural as the bees, and holding one is almost equal to knowing.I Googled “How do bees make honey?” There were dozens of videos explaining it. Augie and I learned that worker bees produce an enzyme(酵素), which changes nectar(花蜜)into dextrose. then beat their wings to thicken the nectar into honey.“It’s kind of hard to see the bees.” I said.“Why don’t we watch it on the big computer?” Augie said. For the next hour, we sat inside, bee-surfing. There were a lot of beekeeper selfie videos, best of which was a BBC documentary about the “waggle dance,” the remarkable communication system that allows bees to give one another directions to theplaces where they’v e found nectar. Most of my own children was spent reading books, forgetting the world around me. Over time, reading controlled my brain, as large areas once dedicated to dealing with the “real” world adapted to dealing with the printed word. This didn’t li mit my development , but it didi leave me with some illusions(错觉)—my idea of romantic love surely came from novels. Many parents worry that “screen time” will harm children’s development, but recent research suggests that most of the common fears about children and screens are unfounded. (There is one exception: looking at screens that emit blue light before bed really does disturb sleep,in people of all ages.) The new guidelines emphasize that what matters is content and context, what children watch and with whom. Each child, after all, will have some hundred thousand of conscious experience before turning sixteen. Those hours can be like the wonderful ones that Augie and I spent together bee-watching, or they can be mindless—and that’s true whether those h ours are occupied by apps or TV or books or just by talk.New tools have always led to panic. Socrates thought that reading and writing would have disastrous effects on memory; the novel, the telegraph, the telephone, and the television were all declared to the End of Civilization, particularly in the hands of the young. Part of the reason may be that adult brains require a lot of focus and effort to learn something new, while children’s brains are designed to master new environments naturally. Advanced technologies always seem disturbing to the adults attempting to master them, and obvious to those children, like Augie.Like the bees, we live by the reports of others. Unlike the bees.We can invent new worlds., constructing them out of apps or TV or books. Sometimes those worlds confuse; at other times, they tell us something inspiring. When Augie’s father got home, Augie rushed to meet him in excitement. “Daddy, Daddy, look,” he said, reaching for the phone. “Do you know how bees make honey? I’ll show you....?58. What can be learnt from the dialogue between the author and Augie?A. The author felt embarrassed about not knowing the answer.B. Augie turned to the smartphone for answers instead of using his head.C. They gained a lot of information about bees on the Internet.D. Children are more creative and quicker in thinking than old people.59. The author mentions her childhood experience in Paragraph 8 in order to _______.A. introduce the theme of the passageB. compare her childhood with Augie’sC. Analyze the good effects of readingD. show great technological changes60. Which of the following statements might the author agree with?A. What children watch or read is harmless to their development.B. The new tools like apps harmed the progress of civilization.C. It’s worrying that apps and books may have bad information.D. It takes children less energy to learn new technologiesthan adults.61. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph imply?A. Humans communicate in the same way as bees.B. Humans can build up more form what they read.C. Humans depend on news reports for information.D. Apps or books open a confusing world to people.62. What does the author mainly want to say with this article?A. Technologies bring more confusion than inspiration to people.B. Screen time keeps the children from thinking independently.C. Screen time doesn’t necessarily harm children’s development.D. Technologies will open up new worlds to old people and children.第二卷非选择题(共46分)五、阅读文章,回答问题(共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分)You travel thousands of miles to experience new cultures. The peer-to-peer or sharing-economy(经济)movement makes it possible for travelers to live locally by staying in other people’s homes, driving their cars, eating in their kitchens and so on, seeing a new destination through their eyes. Why share? After the economic downturn, people developed new ways to make money by sharing resources they already had, such as house, vehicles and skills, while this movement has mobilized an army of micro-entrepreneurs(小型企业家),it has also resulted in traveler benefits ranging from practice(savings and convenince) to enriching (authentic experience). It also supports local communities. This travel style has grows rapidly and become more accessible in recent years through the use of the Internet and social media, both of which help connect travelers with hosts and services.Share a houseThe style of staying in others’ private houses has exploded over the past few years, mainly thanks to Airbnb, an online community marketplace for homelowners and travelers that was started in 2008.Compared with booking a hotel,house-sharing can make a vacation more affordable and add convenience. This helps lkeeo unnecessary cars off the road, making things a little easier on the environment. In recent years ,it has expanded to meet the longer-term needs of travelers, who can rent directly from car owners for a day ,making full use of underutilized(不常使用的) cars.Share a MealHouses and cars aren’t the only things up for sharing .People long for authenntic experiences through food. The movie is set in a small town where the only movie theater is preparing to close down.Bradford said that large modern theaters in the city made it impossible for the Plaza to compete.Headded that the theater’s location(位置)was also a reason.“This used to be the center of town,”he said.“Now the area is mostly office buildings and warehouses.”Last week some city officials suggested the city might be interested in turning the old theater into a museum and public meeting place. However, these plans were abandoned because of financial problems. Bradford sold the building and land to a local development firm, which plans to build a shopping complex on the land where the theater is located. The theater audience said good-bye as Bradford locked the doors for the last time.After75years the Plaza Theater has shown its last movie. The theater will be missed.24.In what way was yesterday’s cleanup at the Plaza special?A.It made room for new wolves were caught in Canada and transported to the park.By last year, the Yellowstone wolf population had grown to more than170wolves.Gray wolves once were seen here and there in the Yellowstone area and much of the continental United States, but they were gradually displaced by human development.By the1920s,wolves had practically disappeared from the Yellowstone area. They went farther north into the deep forests of Canada, where there were fewer humans around. The disappearance of the wolves had many unexpected results.Deer and elk populations—major food sources(来源)forthe wolf—grew rapidly. These animals consumed large amounts of vegetation (植被),which reduced plant diversity in the park.In the absence of wolves, coyote populations also grew quickly. The coyotes killed a large percentage of the park’s red foxes, and completely drove away the park’s beavers. As early as1966,biologists asked the government to consider reintroducing wolves to Yellowstone Park. They hoped that wolves would be able to control the elk and coyote problems. Many farmers opposed the plan because they feared that wolves would kill their farm animals or pets. The government spent nearly30years coming up with a plan to reintroduce the wolvers. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service carefully monitors and manages the wolf packs in Yellowstone.Today, the debate continues over how well the gray wolf is fitting in at Yellowstone.Elk,deer, and coyote populations are down, while beavers and red fores have made a comeback. The Yellowstone wolf project has been a valuable experiment to help biologists decide whether to reintroduce wolves to other parts of the country as well.28.What is the text mainly about?A.Wildlife research in the United States.B.Plant diversity in the Yellowstone area.C.The mobile laboratory named“Drive LAB”in order to understand the challenges faced by older drivers and to discover where the key stress points are.Research shows that giving up driving is one of the key reasons for a fall in health and well-being among older people, leading to them becoming more isolated(隔绝)and inactive.Led by Professor Phil Blythe, the Newcastle team are developing in-vehicle technologies for older drivers which they hope could help them to continue driving into later life. These include custom-made navigation(导航)tools, night vision systems and intelligent speed and losing confidence in their driving skills. The result is that people stop driving before they really need to.”Dr Amy Guo,the leading researcher on the older driver study, explains,“The Drive LAB is (注:根据全国卷读后续写的特点,删除了原题中的划线词及续写要求)(2017年11月浙江卷)A vacation with my motherI had an interesting childhood: It was filled with surprise and amusements, all because of my mother---loving, sweet, and yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David, my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-bye to all of our friends. Who knew if we’d ever see them again? Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we’d returned home to get the purse and traveler’s checks Mom had forgotten.David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad slept:” You stand outside the door and play lookout while I go, and I’ll stand outside the door and play lookout while you go.” I had terrible pictures in my mind: “Honey, where are the kids?” “What?! Oh, Gosh… I thought they wer e being awfully quiet.” We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren’t about to take any chances. On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn’t we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and ask if we could set up tent there? David and I became nervous. To our greatrelief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand our objections. If a strange family showed up on her front doorsteps, Mom would have been delighted. She thinks everyone in the world as as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town. Paragraph 1:The next day we remembered the brand-new tent we had brought with us. __________________________________________________________________________________Paragraph 2:We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way.__________________________________________________________________________________范文The next day we remembered the brand-new tent we had brought with us. Thinking of this tent, Mom suggested that we go camping in the next village in excitement, with her eyes glittering(with 复合结构). Considering her enthusiasm, we all agreed. When the door of our car opened, Mom stormed out instantly and urged us to put up the tent. David and I were asked to pick up some branches to build a fire. And when we came back, Dad and Mom had already lain down the grass comfortably in front of the tent, talking merrily with a local boy at our age, who kept glancing at this tent curiously. Soon we learnt that the boy in rags(衣衫褴褛)even didn’t have a home to live in. Of course, Mom “forgot” to take this tent with us again. We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way. And we also had a nice time living with my grandparents during that trip. But what impressed me most was that tent, which was forgotten deliberately by Mom. Though she did love going camping, she presented that poor boy with this tent out of sympathy. It was Mom that made my childhood colorful. And it was also she that showed me the true meaning of giving.(强调句)I will never forget this surprising and amazing family trip.。

While it is likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his introduction to classical paintings.
主句是they were his introduction to classical paintings,While it is likely that he understood very little of the books是让步状语从句;that he understood very little of the books是主语从句。
21.C【解析】根据文章第一段首句“Benjamin West...when he was only six years of age”以及第四段首句“In 1747,when Benjamin was nine years old”和最后一段,并结合全文可知,全文主要讲述了本杰明·韦斯特少年时代的艺术启蒙,故选C项。
AWhen I was in fourth grade, I worked part-time as a paperboy. was one of my customers. She'd watch me coming down her street, and by the time I'd biked up to her doorstep, there'd be a cold drink waiting. I'd sit and drink while she talked.talked mostly about her dead husband, "Mr. Stanley and I went shopping this morning." she'd say. The first time she said that, soda(汽水) went up my nose.I told my father how Mrs. Stanley talked as if Mr. Stanley were still alive. Dad said she was probably lonely, and that I ought to sit and listen and nod my head and smile, and maybe she'd work it out of her system. So that's what I did, and it turned out Dad was right. After a while she seemed content to leave her husband over at the cemetery(墓地).I finally quit delivering newspapers and didn't see Mrs. Stanley for several years. Then we crossed paths at a church fund-raiser(募捐活动). She was spooning mashed potatoes and looking happy. Four years before, she'd had to offer her paperboy a drink to have someone to talk with. Now she had friends. Her husband was gone, but life went on.I live in the city now, and my paperboy is a lady named Edna with three kids. She asks me how I'm doing. When I don't say "fine", she sticks around to hear my problems. She's lived in the city most of her life, but she knows about community. Community isn't so much a place as it is a state of mind. You find it whenever people ask how you're doing because they care, and not because they're getting paid to do so. Sometimes it's good to just smile, nod your head and listen.21. Why did soda go up the author's nose one time?A. He was talking fast.B. He was shocked.C. He was in a hurry.D. He was absent-minded.22. Why did the author sit and listen to Mrs. Stanley according to Paragraph 3?A. He enjoyed the drink.B. He wanted to be helpful.C. He took the chance to rest.D. He tried to please his dad.23. Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase "work it our of her system"?A. recover from her sadnessB. move out of the neighborhoodC. turn to her old friendsD. speak out about her past24. What does the author think people in a community should do?A. Open up to others.B. Depend on each other.C. Pay for other's helpD. Care about one another.BIt's surprising how much simple movement of the body can affect the way we think. Using expansive gestures with open arms makes us feel more powerful, crossing your arms makes you more determined and lying down can bring more insights(领会).So if moving the body can have these effects, what about the clothes we wear? We're all well aware of how dressing up in different ways can make us feel more attractive, sporty or professional, depending on the clothes we wear, but can the clothes actually change cognitive(认知) performance or is it just a feeling?Adam and Galinsky tested the effect of simply wearing a white lab coat on people's powers of attention. The idea is that white coats are associated with scientists, who are in turn thought to have close attention to detail. What they found was that people wearing white coats performed better than those who weren't. Indeed, they made only half as many errors as those wearing their own clothes on the Stroop Test(one way of measuing attention). The reserchrs call the effect "enclothed cognition," suggesting that all manner of different clothes probably affect our cognition in many differnt ways. This opens the way for all sorts of clothes-based experiments. Is the writer who wears a fedora more creative? Is the psychologist wearing little round glasses and smoking a cigar more insightful? Does a chef's hat make the restaurant food taste better? From now on I will only be editing artcles for PsyBlog while wearing a white coat to help keep the typing error count low. Hopefully you will be doing your part by reading PsyBlog in a cap and gown(学位服).25. What is the main idea of the text?A. Body movements change the way people think.B. How people dress has an influencee on their feelings.C. What people wear can affect their cognitive performance.D. People doing different jobs should wear different clothes.26. Adam and Galinsky's experiment tested the effect of clothes on their wearers'______.A. insightsB. movementsC. attentionD. appearance27. How does the author sound in the last paragraph?A. Academic.B. Humorous.C. Formal.D. Hopeful.CThere are energy savings to be made from all recyclable materials, sometimes huge savings. Recycling plastics and aluminum, for instance, uses only 5% to 10% as much energy as producing new plastic or smelting(提炼)aluminum.Long before most of us even noticed what we now call "the environment," Buckminster Fuller said, "Pollution is nothing but the resources(资源)we are not harvesting. We allow them to be left around because we've been ignorant of their value." To take one example, let's compare the throwaway economy(经济)with a recycling economy as we feed a cat for life.Say your cat weigh 5kg and eats one can of food each day. Each empty can of its food weights 40g. In a throwaway economy, you would throw away 5,475 cans over the cat's 15-year lifetime. That's 219kg of steel-more than a fifth of a ton and more than 40 times the cat's weight. In a recycling economy, we would make one set of 100 cans to start with, then replace them over and over again with recycled cans. Since almost 3% of the metal is lost during reprocessing, we'd have to make an extra 10 cans each year. But in all, only 150 cans will be used up over the cat's lifetime-and we'll still have 100 left over for the next cat.Instead of using up 219kg of steel, we've used only 6kg. And because the process of recycling steel is less polluting than making new steel, we've also achieved the following significant savings: in energy use-47% to 74%; in air pollution-85%; in water pollution-35%; in water use-40%.28. What does Buckminster Fuller say about pollution?A. It is becoming more serious.B. It destroys the environment.C. It benefits the economy.D. It is the resources yet to be used.29. How many cans will be used up in a cat's 15-year lifetime in a recycling economy?A. 50B. 100C. 150D. 25030. What is the author's purpose in writing the text?A. To promote the idea of recycling.B. To introduce an environmentalist.C. To discuss the causes of pollution.D. To defend the throwaway economy. How to Remember What You ReadReading is important. Fortunately, Frank, my twin of eleven years, was just the same.“Come on.” I said, grabbing his hand, and we slid through the cracks between people until we spilled out in front. Finally I got a good look. It was fixed to the plaster(石灰板) next to the postmaster's window, the place of honour usually reserved for the Wanted posters. Beady-eyed Zedekiah Smith, the bank robber, still hung there, but even he had been pushed aside for something more important.A telephone. The first one in town.“How’s it work?” Noah Crawford called out. Noah’s the best fix-it man around, and I could tell he was dying to get his fingers on those shiny buttons.“Don’t rightly know,” answer the postmaster, and he pulled hard at his beard as if it might tell him. “I do know the sound of your voice moves along wires strung on poles. It’s sort of like the telegraph, only you hear words instead of dots and dashes.”“Ah,” the crow d whispered, and I felt my own mouth move along.I gazed at the shiny wood box and something happened inside me. Something--I can only guess--that might be like falling in love. The thought of talking into that box--of making my voice sail through wires in the sky--it took over my brain. I couldn't get it out.“Frank,” I whispered to my twin. “I have to use that telephone.”Five minutes later, Frank dragged me to Main Street, toward borne. “Liza--” he began, but I cut him off. He, however, suggests we view quitting differently.Quitting is like deciding to rearrange a room: you’ve grown comfortable with the status, and it can be hard to picture the end result or even see why change is necessary. And yet, there's the upsetting feeling that you’re no longer entirely satisfied with your current circumstances, perhaps even that you’ve stopped making progress. While it's not out of the question for feelings of regret to surface after a major refit, leaving a position, project or situation can reveal exciting possibilities, making you feel inspired and renewed.Quitting, often happens in situations where we're unhappy, fearful or have determined we have no other choice, factors that can have ill effects on our health. Perhaps you find your work unfulfilling, or you've jumped into a new relationship before you're ready--and, as a result, you're operating under intense pressure. “If stress is endu ring and not managed well, it can start to take a toll,” says Meek. According to the American Psychological Association, long-term, ongoing stress can increase the risk for high blood pressure and heart attack so walking away from whatever is causing it can deliver significant physical and emotional health benefits. “We often see a reduction in the stress hormone cortisol(应激激素皮质醇)”, which can lower blood pressure and may even decrease the heart rate,” says Dr Alex Lickerman, a GP and expert on developing mental adaptability.Leaving situations that fail to bring you joy can leave youwith sufficient time to explore where your heart is truly leading you. In a study that was published in 1999, then Harvard University professor Hermina Ibarra looked at how bankers tried different roles that required new skill sets--someone who spent a lot of time dealing with computers, for instance, was asked to take on personal interactions. Subjects(研究对象) were especially drawn to acting out a version of their future selves through ‘imitation strategies’ -- an approach they compared to ‘trying on different clothes.’ Mark Franklin, the president of CareerCycles, suggests a similar approach as a way to figure out what your true desires might be in your post-quitting life and fore see your future self. “Pretend to be a certain kind of person, or go and meet others who are doing what you want to do,” he says. “Try it on, see how it feels and decide if it's a good fit for you.” It may not feel like it at the time, but just moving on f roma situation that's not quite right can help you get back on track.63. It can be inferred from paragraph 2 that quitting may brim us feelings of being both ________.A. guilty and ashamedB. stupid and enthusiasticC. troubled and hopefulD. inspired and determined64. The phrase “take a toll” (paragraph 3) can be best replaced by “________”.A. developmental adaptabilityB. bring about changesC. keep up the pressureD. have a bad effect65. An approach suggested by Mark Franklin similar to ‘trying on different clothes’ is for________.A. helping people find what truly suits them in careerB. telling capable employees from inadequate onesC. training employees to acquire different working skillsD. providing people with opportunities to have a role play66. It can be concluded from the passage that________.A. quitting is a track that only the timid will choose to followB. personal interaction can be a must for reducing emotional pressureC. mental adaptability can be improved by the stress hormone cortisolD. knowing when to stop is wise and may make dreams happenSection CDirections: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.A. Scientists use indirect methods to discover exoplanets.B. Most exoplanets are very different from the ones in our solar system.C. As the star moves unsteadily, it changes the wavelength of the light we see.D. Astronomers have detected signals indicating the presence of a planet.E. However, we have developed the technology to prove their existence only in the last few decades.F. Direct detection of the visible light from giant planets in space is becoming increasingly possible.Exoplanets(外行星): The Hunt Is OnToday scientists believe that planets could outnumber the stars. For centuries, scientists and natural philosophers have proposed that stars in the night sky have planetary systems similar to our own solar system. The existence of extrasolar planets, or exoplanets, has long been discussed. 67 Although not the first exoplanet discovery. a planet near a sun-like star wasdiscovered by astronomers in 1995. This kicked off an era of exoplanet hunting, with thousands of discoveries and confirmations following in its wake.68 However, in 2015 NASA’s Kepler space telescope found its first Earth-sized planet in a “habitable” zone. This is the distance from a star where surface temperatures of a planet wouldn’t be too hot or too cold for liquid wa ter. So far, only a small slice of our galaxy, the Milky Way, has been explored. Even so, scientists have confirmed over 3,500 exoplanets, with more being added every day.To detect exoplanets, scientists use data from a variety of sources. Larne ground-based telescopes, earth-circling and sun-circling satellites all collect different types of information. Because exoplanets are so far away and very close to stars, it is very difficult to see them directly. 69 For example, when an exoplanet moves between its star and us, it causes a small drop in the star’s brightness. Measuring this drop is the transit(凌日) method of discovery. NASA’s Kepler space telescope has discovered many exoplanets this way.As a planet circles a star, it pulls on it and causes it to shake.70 Measuring these slight changes is the radial velocity(径向速度) method of discovering planets. It is one of the most productive methods for finding and confirming exoplanets. These are just two examples of the many methods scientists use in their hunt for exoplanets, hoping for more information and enhanced detail. As time progresses and technology improves, who knows what else we may find!IV. Summary WritingDirections: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60words. Use your own words as far as possible.HopeNothing in my life had prepared me for what I had to do. Choosing my words carefully, and fighting to stay calm, I told my 4-year-ofd daughter that her grandmother had suffered a stroke(中风), that she was unconscious, and that the doctors said she would probably never wake up. As she moved closer to me. Ameba looked at me, eyes bright, and said, “Maybe Grandma will be okay.” “Maybe she will,” I said, keeping back the tears. But I knew better. I was tying up to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, from our Florida home in the morning to say good-bye to my mom.The rest of that awful week, I joined my brother, and father sitting by my mother’s side in the hospital room. I held her hand and talked to her. I told her that we still needed her. I told her that it wasn’t time to leave yet. I told her how much I loved her. And I told her that her little granddaughter, Amelia, believed that she’d get better. The doctors, with all their years of trai ning and experience, offered no hope for recovery. The damage was simply too extensive.A couple of weeks later, an odd thing happened. Mom woke up! And then she persevered through a long and tough process of restoration to health. during which she had to learn to walk, read, and write all over again, and eventually returned home to Dad. The only one who wasn’t shocked was Amelia. The doctors couldn’t explain it. Amelia didn’t need to. Hope came as naturally to her as breathing. So why are we so afraid to h ope sometimes? Maybe it’s because over the years, life’s disappointments can turn us to disillusionment(理想破灭). How many times have you heardsomeone say: “Hope for the best, expect the worst”? That’s not really hope at all.Hope is being able to look at our world with all of the joy and wonder of a child.________ _______ _______ _______ _________ ________________ _______ _______ _______ _________ ________________ _______ _______ _______ _________ ________V.
