3. Department of Justice
Judges, whether in national or state courts, decide cases; they do not prosecute people. At the national level, government prosecution is the responsibility of the Department of Justice, which is directed by the Attorney General and aided by the Solicitor General, who argues cases for the government before the Supreme Court. The Department uses U.S. attorneys throughout the country, who are appointed for four-year terms to the district courts by the President, with the consent of the Senate. Assisted by the FBI, which is housed within the Justice Department, these attorneys handle criminal and civil proceedings for the government in district courts.
