I have to admit, some of those inference questions really make me scratch myhead. How am I supposed to know what the character was truly feeling if the book didn't directly say it? That's where I have to practice my critical thinking skills.As for the writing portion, we have to do all sorts of assignments. One week we might have to write a narrative story,while another week we're writing a persuasive essay. My teacher is really strict about making sure we follow the structure for each type of writing. You know, having a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a solid conclusion. Using transition words is also super important. I can't count how many times I've had points deducted for not being "cohesive" enough. Sentence structure and varying my openers is another thing they harp on a lot. No more starting every sentence with "I" or "There was"!Okay, next up is the Vocabulary section. Ugghh...my least favorite part, if I'm being honest. We're constantly getting lists of new vocabulary words to learn and study. The hard part is using them correctly in context and really understanding their meaning. It's not enough to just memorize the definition. We have to use them in our writing, make examples, identify antonyms and synonyms, and sometimes even learn their roots or origins. It can feel like drinking from a fire hose with how many new words we learn each unit!Don't even get me started on Spelling and Grammar... Okay, I'll share a little bit. For spelling, we not only have weekly lists to study, but we're expected to apply all those tricky spelling rules we've learned. You know, like when to use a "c" vs. a "k" sound? Or how about words with double consonants? I always struggle with those words that follow a totally different pattern, like "island." Grammar has its own challenges like identifying parts of speech, fixing sentence fragments or run-ons, maintaining proper subject-verb agreement, and using correct pronoun cases. Phew! I really have to stay on my toes.I can't forget about the Listening section either. Here, we do all sorts of activities like listening to conversations, stories, or podcasts and then answering comprehension questions. We have to listen for details, identify context clues, and sometimes even pick up on tone and emotions being expressed. Every once in a while, we'll have to listen and follow instructions, like for putting together a craft or making something. I wanted to tell you all about the homework we get for English class using the Cambridge curriculum books. We have so much homework, it's crazy! But I actually don't mind it that much since the activities are really fun and help me practice all the language skills we need to learn.Let me start by telling you about the homework for our Student's Book. After we go over each unit in class, we always have pages to complete in the workbook section at the back. These pages review vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, writing, and other skills from that unit. For example, after we learned about using adjectives to describe people's personalities in Unit 2, we had a few pages where wehad to write sentences describing different people's character traits. It was good writing practice!There are usually around 10 pages per unit to complete. I don't mind the writing and grammar exercises, but I find the vocabulary pages kind of tedious with all the matching and filling in the blanks. My favorite is definitely the reading comprehension pages where you read fun stories and answer questions about them. Some of the stories are so interesting and funny! My best friend Rachel and I always race to see who can read them faster at home.In addition to the Student's Book homework, we also have activities to do from the Workbook that go along with each unit. These activities are more games and puzzles focused on the target vocabulary and grammar concepts. I really like the wordsearches, mazes, scrambled words, and other puzzle pages because they make practicing English feel like playing games rather than doing real work. Although some of the writing pages in the Workbook can get a little boring too.Another huge part of our homework is reading. We have a Cambridge Reader book which is a longer chapter book that connects to the units we're covering. We have to read a few chapters at home and be prepared for class discussion questionsabout the plot and characters. The stories are usually pretty entertaining though, with fun illustrations too. Last term's reader was about a magic school for kids which was really imaginative and exciting to read about.As if that wasn't enough homework already, we also have online activities to complete each week through the Cambridge resource website. These are interactive grammar and vocabulary games and quizzes that go along with what we're learning. I'll admit, the online activities are probably my least favorite part of the homework because they feel more like real schoolwork than the book-based stuff. Although I do like that you get little badges and points for completing them successfully. I'm so competitive that I'm always trying to get ahead of my friends on the website leaderboards!Finally, the last major homework component is our writing journal. We have to write a journal entry once a week about what we did that week and how we felt. The purpose is to practice informal writing, using examples of new vocabulary from our lessons, and also just getting used to expressing ourselves through the written word. Some weeks the journal is kind of hard if not much exciting happened. But other weeks when I got to go somewhere fun like the zoo or had an awesome playdate withfriends, the journal is really easy to write about all the cool things I did.Phew! I'm tired just from explaining all the different homework we have for English class. As you can probably tell, the Cambridge curriculum definitely keeps us 5th graders busy practicing our English skills outside of class. Between all the books, online activities, reading, and writing journals, I'd estimate we probably have around 2-3 hours of English homework per week. It's a lot of work for sure.But despite the heavy workload, I actually really enjoy my English homework for the most part. The activities are fun and high-quality, which makes practicing English feel like less of a chore. I'm already seeing myself improve my vocabulary, writing, reading comprehension, and overall English ability compared to the beginning of the year. So I think all the homework is paying off!The homework doesn't stress me out too much because it's spread over different types of activities and exercises. Except when I've waited until the last minute and don't have much time left before it's all due...then it can definitely feel overwhelming trying to cram it all in! But for the most part, if I pace myself throughout the week, it's totally manageable.What also really helps is that we get to do some of the homework together as a class before taking it home to complete independently. Our teacher is awesome about going through examples first and giving us guidance. She also lets us work on the activities together in small groups sometimes. This not only makes the homework easier to understand, but it's more fun doing it alongside my friends too.Overall, while the amount of English homework can feel excessive, I don't actually mind it very much. The variety of activities keeps things from getting too tedious or boring. And I know it's making me a stronger English student in the process. Sometimes I may complain about it to my parents, but I'm also low-key proud of myself for taking on such an intensive curriculum. 作为小学英语教师,我认为在设计作业时要做到有趣味性、实用性、创造性,这样不但能使语言学以致用,培养学生的创新能力,并且能使学生走出课本、走进生活,有利于学生素质的全面发展。
因此在布置作业时,我尽量使英语作业生活化,改变以往让学生抄写单词、课文等单调机械性的作业形式,设法让学生们愿意去做,主动去做,而不是被动地把它当成作业来完成,要让他们对英语作业产生兴趣。
所以我每次讲完课文后,让学生针对课文中的内容,设计比较生活化的作业即特色作业来提高学生的兴趣。
做为一名从教一年的心情教师,我不敢说什么理论。
只想在这里分享以下我这一年英语特色作业布置的内容和方法。
1、在教湘少版五年级Unit 12 The Spring Festival之前,我布置作业让学生回家提前搜集有农历新年的资料,包括:人们在国内是如何庆祝春节的;国外的华人们是如何度过春节的。
在学完这篇课文后,同学们不仅对春节的内涵很感兴趣。
我还让同学们通过课文来简单复述春节的习俗,然后让同学们自我操练,并且在台上表演。
满怀激情的学生运用自己的智慧制作了图文并茂的春节卡片,在图画下面简单地写上春节的习俗以及自己对新的一年的祝福,学生们在不知不觉中学会了课文内容,提高了绘画水平,而且也懂得了要珍视中国的传统节日。
2、在教五年级下册Unit 6 I will make a beautiful card时,在课堂上,我给同学们观看了一些有关母亲节来源以及表达对母亲感激之情的图片。
在幻灯片一开始,我先给同学们碗quick reiponse的游戏,迅速说出之前学过的短语:make the bed, cook a meal, wash the vegetable, clean the floor......然后我话锋一转,问道:“Who do these things most at home?在家里谁做这些事情做得最多呢?”大部分同学都会说道:“It’s my mother.”之后,我才引入主题:What will you do for your mother on Mother’s Day?让同学们在学习A课文中进行思考。
