Unit 9 Holidays and Special DaysPart OneLinda: (with a moon cake in her mouth) Mm, this is good.Chris: Yeah... very interesting flavor. So this is a so-called moon cake? Yingying: Yeah, today is a special festival for all Chinese families. It is calledMid-Autumn Festival or Moon Festival. People will eat moon cakes during the festival with family members in the moonlight. It's just like your American Thanksgiving.Linda: Oh, I've heard a little about it... the beautiful story of Hou Yi and Chang Er. Chinese Students: You know the story?Chris: Sure, Linda and I are both very interested in Chinese culture, especially Chinese traditional festivals, like Spring Festival...Linda: It was an unforgettable experience when we were invited to Xiaoqiang's home for the Chinese New Year.Xiaoqiang: I noticed that Chris was especially fascinated by the lion and dragon dancing.Chris: And the fireworks, jiaozi, oh yes, and the red envelopes.Wenwen: Yeh. We Chinese have a lot of traditional festivals.Linda: Can you tell me about some of the others?Wenwen: Yeh. One of my favorite festivals falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month. That's the Lantern Festival. During that event, many kinds of delicate and beautiful lanterns are exhibited and red lanterns can be seen everywhere. And every family eats yuanxiao, a kind of rice ball filled with bean paste, sugar or some other sweet things. That's a symbol of family reunion and happiness.Yingying: Also there's the Qingming Festival, which some people call "the Tomb Sweeping Day"...Chris: Tomb Sweeping?Yingying: Yeah! This day is devoted to honoring relatives who died. Thousands of Chinese visit the tombs of their loved ones. The Chinese have great respect for their ancestors.Linda: That sounds very nice.Xiaogang: Well, another important festival in China is the Dragon Boat Festival.Xiaoqiang: You mean duanwu jie?Xiaogang: Yes. It falls on the 5th day of the 5th month in the Chinese lunar calendar. People usually race dragon boats and eat zongzi on that day.Chris: I like zongzi very much. But why do people celebrate the holiday this way?Xiaogang: The fact is, these activities are traditional customs to honor the patriotic poet, Qu Yuan. He drowned himself on this day in 277 B.C. because his king did not take his advice and his state was conquered. Since then, each year on the 5th day of the 5th month people take boats and throw bamboo leaves filled with cooked rice into the water to feed the fish in order to save his body. Later the custom of racing boats and eating zongzi became part of the celebration.Linda: That's interesting, and you always have stories about them.Wenwen: (mysteriously) Any of you know the "Double Seventh Day" and the "Double Ninth Day"?Chris: Isn't the "Double Ninth Day" a day for old people's hill-climbing?Xiaogang: Yes. Since the word "Nine" sounds similar to the word "long time" in Chinese, this number represents "long life" in China. Well, as you can see, gradually this became "a day to honor senior citizens". But originally people would climb high mountains and honor their family members on this day.Linda: Oh, that's interesting! Then how about "Double Seventh Day"? I really have no idea about it.Wenwen: I guess you could call it our traditional Chinese Valentine's Day.Linda: Valentine's Day? Really?Wenwen: Yeah, an ancient Chinese legend tells the story about the cowherd and the weaving maid, who made the gods angry by their secret love and later the two were separated on two widely distant stars. And on that day, the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, each year, sympathetic magpies form a bridge between the stars and this allows the couple to meet again. And the day is celebrated by the exchange of cards, love letters, or flowers.Chris and Linda: (both) Oh! That's very romantic!Exercise 21.c,d,I2.C,f ,j3.B,g4.A,a.h5.k6.b7.D,eExercise 31.moomlight2.unforgettable invited3.falls4.exhibited everywhere sugar family reunion5.loved ones respect6.drowned take his advice throw feed7.similar long life8.secret love separated bridgePart TwoListening IJingle BellsJingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way.Oh! Almost all families eat turkey and cranberry sauce for this meal, and have pumpkin pie for dessert. This feast is part of a very special day, the holiday of Thanksgiving. In 1620 the Pilgrims made a difficult trip across the ocean from England. They landed in what is now Massachusetts. In England the Pilgrims had not been allowed to freely practice their religion. So they went to the New World in search of religious freedom. The Pilgrims' first winter was very hard. Almost half the group died of cold, hunger and disease. But the Indians of Massachusetts taught the Pilgrims to plant corn, to hunt and to fish. When the next fall came, the Pilgrims had plenty of food. They were thankful to "God" and the Indians and had a feast to give thanks. They invited the Indians to join them. This was the first Thanksgiving.Thanksgiving became a national holiday many years later because of the effort of a woman named Sarah Hale. For forty years Sarah Hale wrote to each president and asked for a holiday of Thanksgiving. At last she was successful. In 1863 President Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a holiday.Exercise 11.B2.A3.A4.B5.CExercise 21.4th2.November3.reunion4.16215.English6.winter7.18638.LincolnListening IIISaint Valentine's DaySeveral different stories are told about the origin of Saint Valentine's Day. One legend dates as far back as the days of the Roman Empire. According to the story, Claudius, the Emperor of Rome, wanted to increase the size of his army. He knew that it would be easier to get young men who were not married to join. Therefore he made a rule that no young man could marry until he had served a certain number of years in the army.A priest named Valentine broke the rule and secretly married a great many young people. Finally, Claudius found out about Valentine and put the priest in prison, where he remained until his death on February 14.After his death, Valentine was made a saint, and the day of his death was named Saint Valentine's Day. It became the custom for lovers to send each other messages on this day. Now Saint Valentine's Day is a time for people to give roses or chocolates and to send one another greetings.Exercise 11.A2.C3.B4.D5.CExercise 21.T2.F3.F4.F5.TPart ThreePractice OneThe origin of Halloween dates back at least 3,000 years to the Celtic celebration of Samhain (pronounced "sow-ain"). The festival began at sundown on October 31st andlasted until sundown on November 1st. It was similar to the modern New Year's celebration. On this magical night, glowing Jack-o-lanterns, carved from turnips or gourds, were set on porches and in windows to welcome deceased loved ones and protect against bad spirits. Burning lumps of coal were used inside as light, and later replaced by candles.Samhain meant "Summer's End". It was believed that the souls of the dead were closest to this world and it was the best time to contact them to say good-bye or ask for assistance. It was also a celebration of the harvest, and still is by those who practice nature-based religions. When European settlers arrived in America they found the native pumpkin to be larger, easier to carve and perfect for Jack-o-lanterns. Halloween didn't really become popular in the U.S. until the late 1800s and has been celebrated in many ways ever since.Exercise 11.A2.D3.C4.B5.DExercise 21,T 2,T 3,T 4T 5.FPractice TwoIf you try to catch a train on 24th December you may have difficulty in finding a seat. This is the day when many people are traveling home to be with their families on Christmas Day, 25th December. For most British families, this is the most important festival of the year. There are a lot of traditions connected with Christmas but perhaps the most important one is the giving of presents. Family members wrap up their gifts and leave them at the bottom of the Christmas tree to be found on Christmas morning. Children leave a long sock or stocking at the end of their bed on Christmas Eve, 24th December, hoping that Father Christmas will come down the chimney during the night and bring them small presents, fruit and nuts. They are usually not disappointed! At some time on Christmas Day the family will sit down to a big turkey dinner followed by Christmas pudding. They will probably pull a cracker with another member of the family. It will make a loud crack, and a colored hat, small toy and joke will fall out! Later in the afternoon they may watch the Queen on television as she delivers her traditional Christmas message to the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. If they have room for even more food, they may enjoy a piece of Christmas cake or eat a hot mince pie. The 26th December is also a public holiday, Boxing Day, and this is the time to visit friends and relatives or watch football.Exercise 11 2 3√ 4√ 5√ 6 7 8√Exercise 21.24 th December/Dec.24 th2.the giving of presents3.stockings4.small toy joke5.afternoon6.26 th December/Dec.26 thPractice ThreeSonora got the idea for Father's Day more than eighty years ago. She was listening to a speech about Mother's Day and decided that fathers should be recognized, too. She especially wanted to honor her own father, who had raised six children alone. Sonora asked the clergy in Spokane to prepare speeches to honor fathers on the first Sunday in June, her own father's birthday. But they did not give the speeches until two weeks later.Fifteen years later, President Calvin Coolidge said Americans should honor their fathers on the third Sunday in June. In 1972, Father's Day became a national holiday in the United States. American families celebrate Father's Day by gathering for dinner or a picnic. They may do special things for Father on his special day: prepare his favorite foods or join him in a favorite activity. And everyone gives him cards and gifts. Each year, a private group called the National Father's Day Committee chooses an American man to receive its Father of the Year Award. The first award was given fifty years ago to General Douglas MacArthur, World War II Commander.General Norman Schwarzkopf, former commander of Allied Forces in the Persian Gulf, was among the winners. He said that being a father puts things in balance. After giving orders all day to thousands of people and having them obey, he said, there is something very healthy about coming home at night and not being able to get your children to clean their teeth!Exercise 11 2 3√ 4√ 5√ 6 7√ 8 9 10√Exercise 21.T2.F3.T4.T5.F6.T7.F8.F9.F 10.TPractice FourSpeaker 1: Christmas, for me, means family. I've got a son in San Francisco and a daughter in Houston. They come home for Christmas and we can see the grandchildren. Sure, we exchange a few presents, but that's not important. Getting together and seeing the kids is what makes Christmas a special time.Speaker 2: Christmas is a time for celebration. I love it—the parties, the good food, the presents. Everybody's happy. Christmas means you enjoy yourself. I love hearingChristmas carols and waking up in the morning when it's all dark and turning on the lights on the Christmas tree.Speaker 3: You know what Christmas means to me? Trouble, that's what! It's not a religious holiday anymore; it's a chance for the stores to make a lot of money. Everybody expects presents, the streets are crowded, and you know what I read? A lot of people get depressed at Christmas. That's right—if you don't have a lot of money or friends, Christmas means a whole lot of disappointment.Speaker 4: Christmas is Santa Claus and Christmas trees and presents. This year I asked for a bike. Do you think Santa can carry it down the chimney?Speaker 5: Christmas means happiness. I work really hard buying presents, sending Christmas cards, making cookies—trying to remember everything. But it's fun to see the looks on the kids' faces when they open their presents, and I like to go to church and sing Christmas carols. And when it snows, now that's really great you have a white Christmas.1.D2.E3.G4.B5.APart FourSection IInterviewer: Hello. I work for Sun Tour Holidays and I'm interviewing people about their last holiday. Would you mind answering a few questions for our survey? Interviewee: No, not at all.Interviewer: Thank you. First, could you tell me about your travel arrangements? Did you experience any difficulties in reaching your destination?Interviewee: Well. Our plane didn't take off on time. It was delayed five hours, so we didn't get to Cyprus until three in the morning and we were very tired when we got there. But there was a bus at the airport waiting to pick us up and it dropped us off at the hotel in time for breakfast, so that was all right.Interviewer: And how was the hotel?Interviewee: Well, we were a little disappointed with the room. It didn't have a balcony and it looked out onto some rather ugly, noisy streets, but the beach was just a stone's throw away—it only took us a couple of minutes to get there.Interviewer: And how important are holidays to you?Interviewee: Oh, we always look forward to going on holiday. We always make sure we get away at least once a year.1.take off2.five hours3.three4.tired5.ugly6.noisy7.bus8.pick us up9.breakfast 10.beachSection IIOnce there was an old woman who liked to bake cookies. She didn't have anyone to share them with, so she just gave them away to the children in the neighborhood. This went on for several years and the cookies became quite famous, especially at Christmas time. The parents began to like the cookies as much as the children did, and the old woman's kitchen became very busy, so the children came to help. Then one Christmas the old woman became ill. There were no cookies, and there was no money to pay the doctor. The children were very sad. Later they had a bright idea, that is, to bake cookies from the old woman's recipe. So the children started a cookie store. Soon they had a very good cookie business, with money to pay the doctor as well as to put in the bank. After the woman got well, she was asked to become the manager of the store, selling special cookies for all the holidays of the year. After the old woman died, the children, now grown up, kept the cookie business alive in her name. Maybe life is like a Christmas cookie. The more you share it with your friends, the more you're likely to enjoy it.Part A1.A2.A3.B4.B5.DPart B1.T2.F3.F4.T5.FSection IIISeveral holidays are unique to America. Columbus Day, which is celebrated on the second Monday in October to honor the discovery of North America; Fourth of July, which is Independence Day; Washington's Birthday, which is celebrated on the third Monday in February to honor the first president of the Republic; and Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving originates from the days of the early New England colonists who were having difficulty surviving in the New Land. Without the help of the native American Indians, the settlers would have died. The Indians showed the colonists how to hunt wild turkeys and grow corn. In the fall, the Indians and colonists gathered for a feastto honor their friendship. Today, Americans follow the tradition by inviting friends and relatives for a turkey dinner on the fourth Thursday of November.Don't be surprised if you are invited to a Thanksgiving dinner or perhaps aFourth-of-July barbecue held in the back yard. You may be asked to a Chinese New Year celebration, or St. Patrick's Day party. The different ethnic and religious groups in the USA celebrate their own special festivities.1.T2.F3.T4.F5.F。

新闻英语视听说(Unit 9) 听力文本与练习答案
Travel1Task One: Having a Fun Ski VacationNot as difficult as it may appear, skiing is an adventure for the millions upon millions. Not as easy as it looks, skiing demands careful preparation, conditioning and knowledge of technique.Beginners learn about terrain and ski equipment as primary training. Skis, boots, and helmetare enough for some. Experts say the most important thing for skiers is that they be comfortablewith their equipment.(Liu Jiao, skiing coach)“It’s helpful to get to know the structure of the skis. They are composed of surface, base and blade. The binding is essential. You should adjust the binding to fit perfectly. When you fall, the binding will release and prevent you from being injured by the skis.”One thing essential before hitting the slopes is exercise. This makes the body more flexibleand better able to cope with the strain of hurtling over rugged terrain.Mastering how to walk on skies and to brake are other essentials. Poles can prevent nastyslides but they are not really necessary.(Zhang Li, skiing coach)“Just holding the poles in your hands is ok. Don’t knot the belts around your wrists.Otherwise, it will hurt you when you fall over.”Braking demands bending the knees, and leaning slightly forward with the upper body. Theskis should remain at a distance of about 10 centimeters.(Zhang Li, skiing coach)“If you still can’t stop, you need to fall over on your side. Try to lower the center of gravitywhen you fall. And use the poles to help you get up. If it doesn’t work, you need to release the binding.”Skiing is quite demanding of energy. Make sure you get a good sleep the night before. If youare ready, let’s get started.Task Two: Traveling on Long-Distance BusesTraveling on long-distance buses is a popular alternative to the railways, even though priceshave gone up. (Wang Mangmang Reports)Relaxed and assured, passengers at this bus station will soon be on their way home. Without endless queues, buying a ticket is reasonably easy. And a ticket guarantees a seat.Zhang Haixia’s whole family is traveling home. They’ve always gone by bus on their annual journey. It costs eighty yuan per person to go to a neighboring province.(Bus passenger Zhang Haixia)“We’re so happy to go home. We take the bus because we don’t want to buy train tickets in2advance. It takes too much time.”Buses have their advantages, but with their increasing popularity and the rising cost of gas, fares have also gone up.Long-distance bus fares cannot by law increase by more than twenty percent during the holiday period. But passengers don’t seem to mind spending the extra.(Bus passenger Duan Shenglin)“I can still afford it.”(Reporter)“What if the price goes up again?”(Bus passenger Duan Shenglin)“I’m going home anyway, regardless of the price.”The peak of travel on the roads is expected to begin in a week’s time and post -holiday travel will hit around 11th and 12th, February as well as 22nd and 23rd.This is perhaps the least crowded transportation spot compared to train stations and airports. Passenger flow has not reached its peak, but people have already started heading home. After the Spring Festival, they will come back, starting another year of migrant life and looking forward to the next family reunion. Task Three: China Eastern Airlines Rejects Reports of Pilot StrikeIt turned out to be a gloomy week for China Eastern Airlines, as it was flooded with customer demands for compensation over delayed flights. This week, 14 China Eastern Airlines planes refused to land and returned to their departure points in southwestern Yunnan Province. On April 3rd, the airline announced that severe winds had forced the planes to return, rejecting some media reports of a pilot strike.(Zhang Jing, PR of China Eastern Airlines)“Due to the bad weather in Yunnan on March 31st, some of our flights had to return to departure airports.”The explanation isn’t satisfying some of the passengers affected by the delays, as many of them have decided to take the airline to court.(Passenger Zheng Wei)“We are preparing all the evidentiary support for a lawsuit. We need to protect our legal rights.”Some of the 14 flights were delayed for nearly 20 hours, and the airport terminals were crowded with anxious passengers waiting for their planes.(Passenger Zheng Wei)“China Eastern says the delay was caused by the bad weather. When I asked why other airlines’ flights were not affected, China Eastern said different airlines have different take -off standards.”Yunnan’s flight routes include many popular tourist destinations, and many carriers operate in the region. But China Eastern was the only airline affected. Industry insiders believe the returning flights were caused by something other than “weather conditions”.3(Zhang Qihuai, director & lawyer of China Aviation Law Committee)“Personally, I don’t think the Chinese Eastern Airline dispute was caused by a pilot strike. If pilots really went on strike, they shouldn’t even bother to take -off, then fly back. They could simply refuse to fly the plane. I b elieve the pilots were just making a point to their employer. It’s just a passive way to express their dissatisfaction.”Industry insiders say the root of the problem is a shortage of pilots in China. They also say the rights of pilots should be protected, but not through improper means which sacrifice the interests of passengers.Analysts are calling for China Eastern to compensate affected travelers as soon as possible, saying the problem was caused by an internal issue, and not the weather. The Lunar New Year is just a month away. And recent changes to China’s National Holiday system mean many more people are turning to the seven-day break over the Spring Festival, as their chance to get away and relax. Wang Jing tells us why travel agents are expecting booming sales.Travel agents in southern Guangdong Province are reporting a huge number of pre-bookings for travel during the Spring Festival. And they think sales are likely to be even hotter this year, despite a 10 percent hike in ticket and restaurant prices.(One Guangdong resident)“Now we don’t have a long May Day holiday, other holiday periods are also shorter, so I’m choosing to travel over this period.”Meanwhile in eastern Zhejiang Province, some of the more popular outbound travel packages are almost entirely sold out. One travel agent says just a few places are available for the end of the festival.(Jin Linyan, staff of Hangzhou International travel)“Tourists who want to go abroad during this period have to hur ry up. We have very tight air tickets, and the deadline for visa applications is also very close.”Several analysts say they expect a travel peak over this Spring Festival, with prices rising 10 to 20 percent. They’re recommending that those who want to ta ke pick another time to travel, because prices are likely to fall sharply after the upcoming holiday.练习答案Unit Nine TravelTask One1. 1) D 2) A 3) B 4) C 5) D2. 1) structure 2) surface 3) base 4) blade 5) binding6) When you fall, the binding will release and prevent you from being injured by the skis7) exercise 8) flexible 9) strain10) Mastering how to walk on skies and to brake are other essentials.4 Task Two1. 1) C 2) D 3) D 4) A 5) A Task Three1. 1) B 2) C 3) D 4) B 5) C2. 1) standards 2) destinations 3) operate 4) dispute 5) bother 6) passive7) dissatisfaction 8) the root of the problem is a shortage of pilots in China9) compensate 10) the problem was caused by an internal issue, and not the weather。

Listening InTask 1: The Internet on CampusThe Internet, a worldwide information network, is used at universities mainly as an information supply source. Staff supply information via the Internet and students may access it or any other publicly available information. The Internet is also useful for students to communicate with staff. Teachers may present lecture materials in lecture halls, and at the same time, they can distribute the materials for students to access from any location at any time via their computer. Such materials are preesented mainly in the form of text, still pictures and hypertext links. Students find this valuable and relevant to their needs. If they must miss a lecture, students can still keep up to date. Staff users may put up notices of conferences, maintain professional contacts, and communicate and conduct discussions with their colleagues or students. Students, on the other hand, are taught haow to use the Internet as an individual productivity tool in several courses.1. A2. D3. A4. A5. CTask 2: Surfing the NetW: Hi Bryan. Hare you doing? The Internet is a wonderful place. There is so much information available. I completely understand how you can get distracted. Sometimes I find myself looking for one piece of information, but by the time I am finished I have a lot more than I started off looking for.M:I know. One thing I really don’t like about it, though, is it takes so much longer to find things, because many sites are useless.W: Yes, there’s that, and also, I often find the same site over and over again in a search. That definitely wastes lots of my time.M:And, of course, there are sites that offer little to no relevant information on the topic you are searching for. In my search today, I found quite a few sites that were nothing more than old local news archives and event calendars.W: Well, I’m sure they were useful to someone at some time, but they should be removed when they’re no longer of use to anyone.M:I agree. With all the time I spnd on it, I still find it to be the best source of information available. And speaking of information, I really should read through what I got on the Internet and start working on my project.W: Okay. Good luck. It’s funny we had this chat, as I was just on my way home to surf the Net myself.M:Well, it was nice talking to you, and maybe I’ll meet you in a chat room later tonight.1.Surfing the Internet for the last few hours.2.Some information on South America for a project he had.3.Because there is so much information available.4.It takes so much longer to find things because many sites are useless.5.She thinks they were useful to someone at some time, but they sgould be removed when they’reno longer of use to anyone.Task 3: Internet AddictionOver the years, studies have shown that it’s possible to become addicted to the Internet. Furthering Listening and SpeakingListeningTask 1: The Origin of the InternetThe story of the Internet begins in the late 1950s. The Soviet Union launched Sputnik in 1957. ThePentagon set up a research team in 1958 to create a computer network to operate during disasterslike a nuclear war. The resulting network linked U.S. scientific and academic researchers. It grewinto the World Wide Web or the Internet that became the network system of the Information Age. In1985, the National Science Foundation created a network which provided a free national service toany U.S. research and education institution. Later, large corporations began to build their ownnetworks. All those networks finally joined the Pentagon’s network to form the Internet. By the1990s, anyone with a computer, a modern, and Internet software could link up to the Internet. In thefuture, the Internet will probably grow more complex and become part of a larger network called the information highway. With that people could bank, shop, watch TV, and perform many otheractivities online.Task2: The Internet—A Small TownThe Internet is a global network, but in many wa ys it’s like a small town with similar services to offer. There are electronic post offices to send and receive e-mail, functioning somewhat more efficiently than the Post Office we know. There are libraries of information that stay open 24 hours a day with millions of books and documents to browse or search through on the World Wide Web or WWW. You can also enjoy real-time text-based communication, using written or printed material to communicate with others immediately and almost “face to face”. Local cof fee shops are seen in the guise of chat room, with people dropping by at all hours of the day and night to socialize. Online education and training is available just as it is in a “bricks and mortar” university or school. Online banking offers you all the services available at your local bank, without fearing to be mugged at an ATM. You can buy almost anything, listen to your local radio station or do your grocery shopping. Indeed, the Internet is your town in a box!Task3: If only life could be like a computer! To get your daily exercise, just click on “run”!If you need a break from life, click on “suspend”.Hit “any key” to continue life when ready. To “add/remove” someone in your life, click settings. To improve your appearance, just adjust the display settings. When you lose your car keys, click on “find”.You could click on “send” and the kids would go to bed immediately. To feel like a person, click on “refresh”.Click on “close” to shut up the noises. To undo a mistake, click on “back”.Is your furniture getting old? Click “update”.If you messed up your life, you could press “Alt, Ctrl, Delete” and start all over!Speaking1. F2. T3.T4.F5.T。

There is, perhaps, no other aspect of Traditional Chinese Medicinethat is more famous than acupuncture. Even those who have never had itperformed (and who will likely never have it performed) know what it is fromits many descriptions and portrayals in popular media. Acupuncture has beenthe subject of, or included in, many television shows, movies, and newspaperand magazine articles.Acupuncture can be dated back several thousand years. Scientists have found sharpened stones in northern China that they believe were used for thispurpose. The actual origins of acupuncture in China are still surrounded in mystery. Many stories and legends attempt to explain how it began, but no one knows for certain. Over the years, the practice of acupuncture spread to other Asian countries, including South Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. By the late 20th century, it had successfully spread around the world and was gaining popularity in Europe and the United States.Traditional Chinese Medicine is largely based on the idea that energy flows throughout the body in different pathways. These pathways correspond to the main functions of the major organs in the body. Acupuncture points are located at key points along these pathways. Doctors who practice acupuncture will typically insert needles into the patient's skin at these points, depending on the patient's illness or complaint. There are several safety risks associated with acupuncture because of the use of needles. It is essential that the needles are clean and sterile. However, despite its reputation, acupuncture is generally safe and the pain is relatively minor. Though it is still controversial and not accepted by everyone, Traditional Chinese Medicine in general, and acupuncture in particular, is quickly becoming common in Western countries.41. The Internet is always open – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – and bargains can be numerous online. With a click of a mouse, you can buy an airline ticket, book a hotel, send flowers to a friend, or purchase your favorite fashions. But shopping on the Internet is a little different from checking out items at the mall. If you are buying items from an online retailer or auction website, here is my advice.Know whom you are dealing with. Anyone can set up a shop online under almost any name. Confirm the online seller’s physical address and phone number in case you hav e questions or problems.Know exactly what you are buying.Read the seller’s description of the product closely, especially the fine print.Know what it will cost. Check out websites that offer price comparisons and then, compare “apples” to “apples”. Fact or shipping into the total cost of the order.Check out the terms of the deal. Can you return the item for a full refund if you are not satisfied? If you return it, find out who pays the shipping costs, and when you will receive your order.Keep a paper trail. Print and save records of your online transactions, including the product description and price, the online receipt, and copies of every e-mail you send to or receive from the seller.I hope my advice can help to keep your online shopping experience a safe one.Listening IVExercise 1 ACDExercise 2 TFTFScript:On the rooftop over a supermarket in North London is a garden that could be a model of sustainability in cities everywhere. Many of them do this during a gap year between finishing school and starting in higher education. Volunteers learn to solve problems, work together as a team and develop their personalities. Communities in need get help they couldn’t afford to pay for. In Britain, oneof the main agencies for voluntary work is Raleigh International. It arranges for thousands of people, aged between 17 and 25, to help out in their own country or abroad. This group of 100 people has just arrived at the base camp in Costa Rica. In the next ten weeks, they are taking part in three different projects. One of the projects is environmental, one community-based and one an adventure project. But first, they have training for the conditions they will encounter. For the environmental project at Curu, the volunteers are going to help to build an artificial reef from recycled materials. This forms a protective environment for the fish to breed and feed. It helps the local economy of commercial fishing and protects the natural reefs from over-fishing and destruction. The community project is in one of the poorest rural areas in the world. In the village of El Porvenir, volunteers are going to make bricks. They’re going to help to build astorehouse for the important sesame crop. If they have more storage, the villagers will be able to make more money from selling sesame. Volunteers also take part in a survival activity. Tomorrow, this group is trekking to the summit of Costa Rica’s highestmountain, Mount Chirripo. At the end of the ten weeks, the volunteers are proud that their efforts have helped to improve the lives of the people and the environment of Costa Rica and Nicaragua.1. 17 to 252. 100 people3. Speaker 1 It’s not going to ease up! So what can I do for you?Speaker 2Well, next year’s my final year and I need to think seriously about my career. Speaker 1I would agree with you there. Let’s havea look at your file. You’re readingEnglish, you’re getting good grades, you got a merit in your first year exams and you’re on track for a 2:1 according toyour tutor. Have you any idea what you’d like to do?Speaker 2I’m very drawn to publishing. I read a lotof novels and I’m quite a good critic. Speaker 1That’s a good start. I’m guessing you’d like to be a literary editor?Speaker 2That’s right.Speaker 1Well, I should tell you that literary editing is a hard profession to get into and it doesn’t pay very well, unless you’re at the top. You could think a bit more broadly than just literature. For example, there’s educational publishing, professional publishing and there’s also specialist publishing, such as sports.Speaker 2I’m not very sporty.Speaker 1Well, I understand sport may not be your thing but … you get the idea. Speaker 2Yes, I do. So how do I start?Speaker 1First of all, you need a good degree but even before that I would contact publishers and see if they’ll offer youwork experience. You won’t get paid, ofcourse, but it’s good for your CV andyou’ll learn something about the business.Speaker 2Right. How do I find out who to write to? Speaker 1All the publishers are listed in the Publisher’s Yearbook. There’s a copy in the library in the careers section, so you can use that for a start. Check the job adverts in the newspapers and maybe look at the specialist publishing trade journal, the Bookseller. That has job ads as well.Speaker 2Thank you.Speaker 1The other thing you might do is check the Internet – sometimes, the publishers’websites offer internships or job experience opportunities for new graduates.Speaker 2 I’ll do that.Speaker 1One other thing. Graduates studying Englishalways want to be an editor, they’re quite romantic about it, but thereare other departments – marketing, sales, and the production side. Don’t dismiss those.Speaker 2Thanks for the advice, it’s very helpful. But it’s literary editing that I want to do. Speaker 1Well, I wish you the best. Let me know how you get on. However, we’re going to look at one of the biggest technological marvels of the 21st century. The Airbus A380 is the world’s biggest commercial aircraft. New technologies were used in thedesign, engineering and manufacture of this amazing “superjumbo”. The Airbus A380 is assembled in Toulouse in France, but parts of the aircraft are built in several European countries. They are brought to Toulouse by various means of transport. This is a ship which was built in China especially to transport the huge sections of the plane. Parts of the main body are built in Germany. Special carbon fibre materials are used to give the plane great strength with less weight than usual. The wings are made in Britain of the same carbon fibre material. They are much lighter than aluminum and steel. Several parts of the plane are built in factories in Spain. Finally, some sections are built in France, so Airbus has its own factories in Britain, France, Germany and Spain. One of the most important pieces of technology for such a huge aircraft is the landing gear. This is built in Canada where extensive tests are carried out to ensure that it can land under any conditions. The engines were developed by Rolls-Royce at Derby in Britain. Finally, pilots have to learn to fly the plane. This flight simulator at Toulouse uses the latest digital technology. Now for the moment of truth, with 154 planes ordered by the world’s airlines, the big question was:“Will it fly at all?” On the day of the first flight, thousands of people gathered at Toulouse Airport to see the superjumbo fly for the first time. They were not disappointed. The biggest airliner in the history of aviation took to the air as planned.Topics mentioned are: 1, 3, 5, 6 and 8 2.1.France2. China3. Britain4. CListening inPassage1PresenterCould technological advances be changing people’s identities –andpossibly even society as a whole? That is the theory behind a new book on the brain by Professor Susan Greenfield. The book is called Tomorrow’s People:How 21st Century Technology Is Changing the Way We Think and Feel. Greenfield suggests that advances in technology, and the effect they are having on our lives, are changing our very idea of who we are. In other words, they are changing our identity. And this, she thinks, is a very dangerous thing. I’mjoined in the studio by Dr Jane Ferris, Professor of Neuroscience at Imperial College London and Brian Thomas, Professor of Surgery at University College Hospital. Let’s begin at thebeginning. Brian, how do brains work? BrianWell, a brain is a mass of neurons, and these neurons make connections with each other –billions of connections –and store information. We all havebasically the same brain structure. It’s what we do with our brain that makes the difference. We take in information. The neurons in our brain connect all this information and make sense of it. So to some extent, it’s the information we feed our brain that helps to make us the kind of people we are –and that’s what we call our identity.JaneAnd if I can come in here, children and young people are now spending huge amounts of time on video games that are often violent, also on the web, and on mobile phones. And Greenfield believes that the result is that these technologies may be changing the way young people think and even causing changes in their identity.PresenterWhy exactly?JaneBecause the information that an individual receives from computer games, for example, is very different from reality. And she fears that because of this, these technologies may be changing our sense of reality – what wesee as real –and may even reduce it. And if this is happening, the result may well be changes in our behaviour. PresenterCan you give an example?JaneRisk-taking is a good example – we may start taking more risks.BrianBut she admits there’s no conclusive evidence of this.JaneThat’s true.BrianI agree that Greenfield asks some interesting questions, but to say that technology can influence society to think and behave differently –we needmuch more research before we can accept this.2.1. presenter2. Aren’t they more trouble than they’re worth? Speaker 2I think that’s one of the stupidest questions I’ve ever heard!Speaker 1I thought you might say that.Speaker 2Of course we need computers. How can anyone say otherwise? They’verevolutionized our lives. I mean, I don’tknow where to begin, they’ve changed our lives so much. Look. To start with, computers mean we can communicate with anyone anywhere in the world almost instantly.Speaker 1That’s not quite true.Speaker2Well, you know what I mean. I can send a document from London to Sydney in five minutes. If I want to conference with people there’s webcam –we cansee each other on camera – do you really want me to go on?Speaker 1But why is it so useful, to be able to send a document to Australia in five minutes? What does it actually achieve? Speaker 2It speeds things up. I don’t have to put the document in an envelope, stick a stamp on it and go to the post office, stand in a queue … knowing it will takeanother three days to get there – at least. The past decade has witnessed a more and more fierce competition in the job market.Consequently ,students voice growing concern over how to get a job after graduation. To this problem, in my mind, there are at least the following three approaches.
First of all, the main approach is to take part in grand recruiting fairs in big cities. The student hands in their resume and waits for the notice of an interview. Secondly, the students can go over the advertisements on newspapers, TV or the Internet to find a satisfactory job. Of course they should also wait for a reply after sending out applications. Finally, going directly to an ideal company is a brave behavior, which is pretty rare among the job hunters.
Personally, I would like to choose the second method in my own practice. On the one hand, I don't want to have a try
at those companies which are not advertised in the mass media. The success rate is so rare that I cannot afford the time and energy. On the other hand, I would not like to go to those crowded recruiting fairs, which often provide only poorly-paid posts which are neither challenging nor promising. As long as I am sure of making sufficient preparations and distinguishing myself during interviews, it is out of question for me to get the ideal job which I have been dreaming of.
Every day we hear about people making radical career changes. The (12)opportunity exist, but will all these changes make us any happier once we get there? Following are four (13)available steps towards coming to terms with why you do what you're doing.
First, realize that your job does not (14)define you, but how you do it does. Any job can be done well, done with (15)passion, done with care. Second, stop (16)focusing on the money. Money will never be enough to stop using it. Seeing where your money is really going can help you to refocus your (17)spending towards the things you really want. Getting paid is only one small part of what you do; your work has to be more than just a paycheck to be (18)fulfilling. Third, find the
(19)significance in what you do. This may require you to think big, but it can be done. Take some time to really think about what you do. (20)Prospective place and huge roles are personal sense in well-being. Try to remember why you took the job in the first place. Fourth, dare to ask yourself if it's worth it. Maybe all that's needed is some refocusing. Learn to say "no". (21)As much as you can choose the things you spend your time on,don‘t attend events or meetings only because everyone expects it.
Take a look at your life. How would you describe it? Contented? Rushed? Exciting? Stressful? Moving forward? Holding back? For many of us it's all of the above at times. (22)There are things we dream of doing one day, there are things we wish we could forget. What would your life look like if you could start over with a clean slate?。
