AI have recently moved to Hamburg in Germany and have always heard that Germans just wear jeans or some strange clothes.Since I moved here though,I have found this to actually be completely false and I think I would prefer it if they did just wear jeans,so I could do the same!Hamburg is a very big shopping city.Apart from H&M,NEWYORKER and MANGO,I have found a NEW LOOK and a new Topshop have recently just opened. These shops are quite popular in the UK and sell clothes which are always considered as very“fashionable”.Another thing I am really struggling with,as well as trying to be fashionable,is that I am trying to find the right clothes for the weather.I have found in Hamburg one minute it is nice and sunny but the next minute it is pouring with rain! One day it might start off really rainy and cold but by lunch time it is sunny and really hot,so wearing a coat is not practical. In general, however,I think it has also got cold here very quickly and it already feels like the winter that I am used to.I frequently go out in my winter coat, hat, gloves and scarf while many other people are still only wearing jeans or leather jackets.I don't understand how they do it as I am always freezing.Which is better—to blend(使混合)in with fashion or be warm?I think I would rather be warm and maybe look like a bit of a banana in a huge coat than be shivering all day. What do you think?Clearly I am missing something here as I seem to be the only one struggling over these fashion decisions.1.In Hamburg, the writer has found Germans.A.care more about what to wearB.don't always wear jeansC.like wearing fashionable clothesD.like wearing jeans2.Shopping in Hamburg is very.A.difficultB.funnyC.excitingD.convenient3.What does the underlined word“shivering” probably mean?A.Wandering.B.Searching.C.Shaking.D.Watching.BTwo British teachers have broken the world record for the longest journey in atuk-tuk after pulling their failing vehicle for43miles.Richard Sears and Nick Gough traveled37,500kilometers around the world and passed through37countries.They did this to support the grassroots education project in Africa,Asia and South America. The pair, who set off from London, thought their expedition was over when the vehicle started to fail. When the tuk-tuk broke, they were only70kilometers away from their destination. They decided to pull it the rest of the way.The tuk-tuk,which weighs800kilograms,was pulled in turns by Richard and Nick over three days.On arrival in Chepen,Peru, they discovered a mechanic who specialized in tuk-tuks and managed to fix it.The pair were back on the road and aiming for their next goal.Along their journey they had to tackle deserts and jungles. They also survived close encounters with elephants in Uganda and Botswana and an accident in Malaysia. The greatest hardship on the tuk-tuk was the mountain ranges lying in their path, including the Alps, the Himalayas and the Andes.Nick and Richard uncovered some inspirational projects across Africa,Asia and South America. They witnessed firsthand the educational challenges facing these areas today. They joined street children in the slums of Cairo,Khartoum,Kampala,Mumbai and Phnom Penh. They visited Congolese refugees(难民)in camps in Eastern Burundi. They witnessed how education could free sex-workers in Delhi and victims of human trafficking in Nepal. The pair established The Tuk Tuk Educational Trust,a U.K.registered charity.Talking about their motivation,Richard said:“The world's leaders have made a commitment to achieving universal primary education but,in spite of this pledge(誓言,承诺),over57million primary-aged children worldwide are still out of school;many more are in school, though still cannot access quality learning opportunities.”4.Why did the two teachers travel the world?A.To support an education project.B.To create a new world record.C.To entertain themselves.D.To challenge themselves.5.How far did the two teachers pull the tuk-tuk each day on average?A.A little more than30kilometers.B.About14miles.C.43miles.D.70kilometers.6.What is the third paragraph mainly about?A.How they realized their next goal.B.Their exciting experience on the road.C.The beautiful scenery of famous mountains.D.The difficulties and dangers they faced in the journey.7.Which of the following best describes the two teachers?A.Curious and brave.B.Humorous and generous.C.Courageous and responsible.D.Efficient and honest.CAuckland is New Zealand's largest urban area with a population of just over a million. It is not, however, the capital, although it was at one time, until the capital moved to Wellington.Auckland is the centre of commerce and industry, and is perhaps the most energetic, prosperous and multicultural city in New Zealand. The city's landscape is decided by volcanos, the twin harbors, bays, beaches and islands. Its nickname“the city of sails” is very suitable.Auckland has more boats for each person than anywhere else in the world.Auckland has many volcanos, many of which currently afford great views of the city. And Auckland's shiny waters seem to attract people from every point. It is a water-lovers'best place, with some of the best beaches, for swimming, diving, fishing, sailing, windsurfing and water sports in the country.Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand. It is also the cultural, administrative and political centre of the country. Two aspects of the city that will immediately strike any visitor are the harbor and hilly landscape.Everywhere you go,the sounds and the smell of the ocean hang in the air,and green hills and valleys wrap you in a bear hug.At night,Wellington offers a spectacular, shimmering cityscape that is unlike almost anywhere else in the world.Even after seeing it for a hundred times,it still takes your breath away.Wellington is a scenic, windy and diverse place. It has some of the best museums, art galleries, restaurants and coffee houses in the country. It is the storehouse for the nation's historic, cultural and artistic treasures.Being the first place where European settlers arrived,it also boasts lots of historic streets and buildings.Wellington plays host to an excellent festival of the arts every two years.8.From the passage,we know that Auckland used to.A.host a festival of the artsB.afford great views of the cityC.be the capital of New ZealandD.have more boats than any other country in the world9.Auckland is the best city in New Zealand for people to.A.see green hillsB.do water sportsC.study New Zealand cultureD.visit historic streets and buildings10.What's the author's attitude towards the cityscape in Wellington?A.Critical.B.Neutral.C.Favourable.D.Indifferent.11.What would be the best title for the passage?A.Auckland and WellingtonB.Welcome to New ZealandC.The Capital of New ZealandD.The Landscape of New ZealandDReading books and looking at pictures are great, but nothing facilitates(促进) learning like travel, especially for teenagers. Not only do they get to see a world beyond their neighborhood, they also get to experience it,feel it,taste it,hear it and better understand the world around them. After nearly four decades in the classroom and traveling the world,Phyllis Duvall Bailey knew this perhaps better than anyone else.Becoming involved in the work in AKA Sorority Inc in the US,she worked to educate children about the United Nations. There was no doubt in Bailey's mind that the lessons would mean so much more if the students could see things themselves.Starting in2015,Bailey,82,set out to take her students to the UN Headquarters in New York City to give them a“Window Seat to the World”,and thus transformed them into global citizens.Indeed,it is a great opportunity to give students national and international exposure.Since Bailey saw the students as future leaders, she was desperate to expose them to the UN,its mission, its agendas(议程)and its supporting organizations. She decided to take out$10,000of her own money to pay for the late June trip, which was enough to take10students aged14—17for a four-night stay in New York. There, they had guided tours of the UN Headquarters and the Port of New York(纽约港).It was Quenyaun Payne's first trip to the city and Taylor Sappington's second. Payne,17,is a senior at Mceachem High School in the state of Georgia, the US. Sappington,15,is a junior at Therrell High School in Atlanta,Georgia, the US.Both said their visit to the UN was inspiring.“I saw not only how countries were working together but also how they're focused on common goals like global warming and keeping peace,” Sappington said.Payne commented,“The trip was amazing.I'm so thankful that Mrs.Bailey made it possible.”Actually, there are a lot of people grateful for the retired teacher's effort. The United Nations Association of Atlanta recently gave Bailey its Humanitarian Award, and the United Nations Association of the US awarded her with the National Education Award. But Bailey wasn't looking for recognition or even gratitude.Over those four days in New York, she'd already felt it and seen it in the eyes of those10teenagers,Payne and Sappington included, who made the trip.“It has been a real joy to get to see and watch their reaction to new experiences,” she said.12.The underlined word“this” in Paragraph2refers to.A.the benefits of travelB.good reading habitsC.new teaching methodsD.the things teenagers like13.How did Bailey help students?A.She offered them voluntary opportunities at the UN.B.She paid for trips that helped them see the world.C.She paid for them to go to school in other countries.D.She taught them some useful lifelong reading skills.14.What can we infer from Sappington's words?A.He determined to work for the UN in the future.B.He showed no interest in global affairs at all.C.He found the trip to the UN greatly instructive.D.He wanted to visit New York City once again.15.What made Bailey most joyful according to the passage?A.Students'gratitude.B.Social recognition.C.Students'gains.D.Official awards.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

The idea for KidZui came about when one of the founders, Vidar Vignisson, saw how difficult it was for his children to enjoy the power and promise of the Internet in a safe way. Together with Cliff Boro and Thomas Broadhead, they decided to do something.KidZui was first tested by 8,000 kids and their parents. Lisa Rebena, a parent whose child tested KidZui, said, “My 4-year-old gets into KidZui,reads news and watches videos all by herself, generally doing what she pleases. I'm much more relaxed now when my daughter is on the computer.”Content (内容) in KidZui has been reviewed by a team of more than 200 trained teachers and parents. They make sure that kids see content that is proper for their age in terms of developmental level and reading ability. New websites, pictures and videos are added to KidZui every day. When a young user tries to watch a video outside of KidZui, it will be reviewed and, if proper, added — often within a matter of hours.Besides, parents can change the content available, add andtake out some websites and see what their kids are viewing online. Later I learned what had happened to my town’s bats. A disease called “white nose syndrome(白鼻综合征)” had killed 93 percent of New York State’s bats(and about 6 million bats across the country)! I was shocked. I asked the bat biologist what I could do to hel p, and she said, “Tell others what’s been happening. Help people understand that bats are important to our environment and need to be protected. ”I thought I must teach people about bats. My first stop? The library, where I eventually checked out every book on bats they had. Next, I started a Facebook page called Buddies for Bats and posted any photos, facts, and videos that I could find. Then I wrote a letter to the host of an environmental program on my local radio station, asking if they’d do a show on bats. (They did! )But I still wanted to find a way to educate people face to face. I managed to make a presentation to a school. I also used tools to describe how bats help farmers(and protect our food supply) by eating crop-damaging insects.I practiced my presentation until it shone like a polished stone. It went over so well that other teachers started requesting me. Over the past three years, I’ve talked in frontof everyone from 5-year-olds to senior citizens! The more I present, the more I noticethat I am changing minds. I have watched people go from dismissing bats as“disgusting(令人厌恶的)” to truly understanding them and advocating their protection.Right now, I’m thinking of becoming a marine biologist(海洋生物学家) someday. As long as I’m helping animals, I’ll be happy.1. The idea is to get people fit and reduce their carbon footprint. Guests will have to produce at least 10 watt hours of electricity—roughly 15 minutes of cycling for someone of average fitness. Guests staying at Plaza Hotel will be given meal tickets worth $36 once they have produced 10 watt hours of electricity. The bicycles will have smart phones attached to the handlebars measuring how much power is being generated for the hotel. The plan, a world-first, will start on 19 April and run for a year. Only guests staying at the hotel will be able to take part. Frederikke Toemmergaard, hotel spokeswoman, said, “Many of our visitors are business people who enjoy going to the gym. There might be people who will cycle just to get a free meal, but generally I don’t think people will take advantage of our pr ogramme. ”Copenhagen has a long-standing cycling tradition and 36% of locals cycle to work each day, one of the highest percentages in the world, according to the website visitcopenhagen. dk. US environmental website treehugger. com recently voted Copenha gen the world’s best city for cyclists. “Because Copenhagen is strongly connected with cycling, we felt the bicycle would work well as a symbol of the hotel’s green profile (形象). ”If successful, the electric bicycle meal programme will be spread to all Crowne Plaza hotels in the UK, the hotel said in a statement.【文章大意】本文讲述了哥本哈根一家宾馆推出了一项电动自行车免餐计划, 内容是宾馆客人通过骑自行车为宾馆生产一些电就能得到免费的一餐。

AAt the age of 95, Olga Kotelko attracted great attention at the World Masters Athletics Championships. This 5ft-tall Canadian became the oldest recorded woman indoor runner, high jumper and long jumper at the competition.Olga now has more than 30 world records to her name and has won more than 750 gold medals. But she sees herself as nothing special, describing herself as just a plain Jane. As one of 11 children brought up on a farm, she has always been active, milking cows and doing other housework. She has now outlived all her brothers and sisters and most of her friends but when asked what her secret is, she says there isn’t one. “I think your age is just a number. It’s not your birthday; it’s how you age that makes the difference. It’s your attitude to all the things that happen in your life that plays the biggest part.”So can we all turn ourselves into nonagenarian (九十多岁的) superheroes? Research from Newcastle University suggests that as every 24 hours pass, we add an extra five hours to our lives — that’s over 2 months each year — partly because of improving living conditions andmedical development. And in the UK the number of people who are living into their 100th year has nearly increased by four times since the 1980s. So ageing is not a terrible thing. While Olga’s genes (基因) might help her, we’re not all prisoners to our own. After all, 75% of our later lives could be down to the lifestyle we choose to lead. A good diet (饮食) and regular exercise are key. Besides, developing friendships in mid-life also works. Dr Holland, director of Aston University’s research centre for healthy ageing, says: “The more friends you have when you’re 50-60 years old, the less likely you’re to be lonely in later life; the less lonely you are, the less likely you’re to be ill as the years go by.”21. Olga Kotelko was well-known at the World Masters Athletics Championships because _____.A. she was the oldest sportswoman thereB. she competed in several eventsC. she set a new world recordD. she won a gold there22. What did Olga Kotelko mean by describing herself as a plain Jane?A. She was hard-working.B. She was once named Jane.C. She was very active.D. She was very common.23. Olga Kotelko’s words suggest that _____.A. we shouldn’t count our age up like numbersB. we shouldn’t celebrate our birthday as we get oldC. we should try to have a positive attitude towards lifeD. we should learn to change according to what happens24. We can learn from the last paragraph that _____.A. how long we live doesn’t completely depend on genesB. Olga Kotelko succeeded because of her good genesC. it’s hard for the middle-aged to make friendsD. it’s unavoidable for people to get oldBGeorge Watford works at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) in New York City. He gets some unusual phone calls. One day, he got a call about a mountain lion living in a small building. “We didn’t believe it,”Watford said. “But when we went out there, sure enough, there was a mountain lion sitting at the front window looking out at us.”The big cat’s owner knew that his neighbors were unhappy about the animal. He didn’t try to stop us taking it away.In one year, the ASPCA took in 9,459 different animals, not counting cats and dogs. That number includes a lot of rabbits and monkeys, but the ASPCA has also taken many other exotic (外来的) pets from people’s homes. These animals can’t be set free into the wild because they wouldn’t survive. The ASPCA tries to find homes for them in zoos or special areas for animals. It’s against the law to sell wild animals in New York City. Many buildings don’t even allow dogs and cats, not to mention more exotic animals. Still, the ASPCA takes away most of the exotic animals not because of complaints (怨言), but because the pet’s owner needs help. A lovely baby lion or bear will finally grow up to be dangerous. “When they bite(咬人), it isn’t because they hate you. It’s because they’re wild animals,”said exotic animal expert Kathi Travers.Travers is quick to give speeches against raising wild animals as pets. Too often people think that caring for a wild animal is the same as caring for a dog or a cat. “To love an animal is not enough,”Travers said. “There has to be respect (尊重), and respect is not taking an animal, sticking it in a little cage, and expecting the animal to be happy.”25. The call was made _____.A. to report a missing lionB. to report a neighbor for keeping a lionC. when the owner was awayD. when the lion broke out of the window26. When it finds an exotic animal in the city, the ASPCA _____.A. keeps it until it grows upB. sets it free into the wildC. helps find it a homeD. sells it to a zoo27. Flies always seem to know where you’re coming from — and how to get away.“Flies are very good at what they do,” says Michael Dickinson, a professor of biology at the University of Washington. To study the insects in action, Dickinson used a machine to run flies to a tube, where a plate was ready to catch the flies from different directions — front, side, and back — while a high-speed camera filmed the insects’ reactions (反应) to the unpleasant hit. After running hundreds of flies through his machine, Dickinson discovered something interesting. Within 300 milliseconds of a possiblehit, the flies were well prepared. If the hit was right in front of its head, the fly would shift (挪动) its middle pair of legs forward —moving it backward and away from danger. When the hit came from the back, the fly would shift its middle legs backward to jump forward. Flies may eat dog droppings, but these insects are also beautiful dancers.Dickinson’s interest in housefly hitting goes beyond keeping his office fly-free. His research is helping others build smart micro-robots that can copy the flies’flight patterns (模式). The military (军队), too, is interested in Dickinson’s work. It hopes to use findings like his to build planes with better reaction times, which could keep soldiers out of harm’s way.As for Dickinson, it should be noted that he doesn’t hate flies. There are many advantages in attending schools abroad. Students who study abroad can not only make friends with people of different cultures but also learn much more advanced knowledge of science and technology from foreign countries, and moreover, they can learn foreign languages more quickly. However, there are also some disadvantages because most of the students are too young to live by themselves without any living experience and they may feel lonely and homesick because of being far away from their motherland, and most importantly, the costs are much higher there than at home. In spite of these, in my opinion, advantages are more than disadvantages.。
