The word rubbish could lose its meaning because everything which goes into the dumps would be made into something useful. Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would provide energy if nothing else. The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants and discover exactly what raw materials go into it and what go out. The aim is to find out how much of these raw materials could be provided if a plant for recycling waste were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metal such as steel, lead and copper, but also paper and rubber as well.Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting and separating the rubbish. When this project is complete, the rubbish will be processed like this: First, it will pass through sharp metal bars which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed; then it will pass through a powerful fan to separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids; after that founders and rollers will break up everything that can be broken. Finally, the rubbish will pass under magnets(磁铁), which will remove the bits of iron and steel;the rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final stage. The first full-scale giant recycling plants are perhaps fifteen years away. Indeed, with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dumps, some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long.十五年内英国不列颠其他国家也应该积极建设大型工业综合体,以回收废物。

If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the callshows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephonecalls made after 11:00 p.m. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it’s a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, it would be too impolite.A person who is 5 minutes late, will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.31. What is the main idea of this passage? ___B____a. It is not customary to telephone someone in the morning and in sleeping hours in the U.S.b. The role of time in social life over the world.c. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite in the U.S.d. Not every country treats the concept of time as the same.32. What does it mean in the passage if you call someone during his or her sleeping hours? _B__a. A matter of work.b. A matter of life or death.c. You want to see him or her.d. You want to make an appointment with him or her.33. Which of the time is proper if you want to make an appointment with your friend? __B___a. at 7: 00 am.b. at 4:00 pm.c. at the midnight.d. at 4:00 am.34. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? _____D_____a. In the U.S.A guests tend to feel they are highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party isextended only three or four days before the party date.b. There is no misunderstanding arising between people from different cultures about theconcept of time.c. It may be considered foolish to make an appointment well in advance in the U.S.A..d. Promptness is valued highly in American life.35. From the passage we can safely infer that ____B__.a. it’s a matter of life or death if you call someone in day timeb. the meaning of time differs in different parts of the worldc. it makes no difference in the U.S. whether you are early or late for a business partyd. if a person is late for a date, he needn’t make some explanationPassage TwoThe world itself is becoming much smaller by using moderntraffic and modern communication means. Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest is pollution. To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it.Man has been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in a place, men moved to another place. But this is no longer true. Man is now slowly polluting the whole world.Air pollution is still the most serious. It’s bad to all living things in the world, but it is not only on kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us become angry more easily. Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop the people from burning coal in houses and factories in the city, and from blowing dirty smoke into the air.The pollution of SO2 is now the most dangerous problem of air pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic. It is sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution. The earth is our home. We must take care of it. That means we must keep the land, water and air clean. And we must keep careful of the rise in population at the same time.36. Our world is becoming much smaller ___B____.a. because the earth is being polluted day and nightb. thanks to science developingc. because of the rise in pollutiond. because the earth is blown away by wind every year37. Thousands of years ago, life was ___D____ it is today.a. much easier thanb. as easy asc. as hard asd. much harder than38. Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution because ___A___.a. it’s bad to all living things in the world.b. it makes much noisec. it has made our rivers and lakes dirtyd. it makes us become angry more easily39. The pollution of SO2 is caused by __D____.a. bicyclesb. waterc. animalsd. cars and motorbikes40. Which of the following is not true? Da. Many countries are making rules to fight pollution.b. Itis helpful to fight against the problem of SO2.d. The problem of pollution is not so serious because there are not so many people.Passage ThreePromptness is important in American business, academic, and social settings. The importance of punctuality is taught to young children I school. Tardy (迟缓的) slips and the use of bells signal to the child that punctuality and time itself are to berespected.People who keep appointments are considered dependable. If people are late for job interviews, appointments, or classes, they are often viewed as unreliable and irresponsible. In the business world, “time is money” and companies may fine their executives for tardiness to business meetings. Of course, it is not always possible to be punctual. Social and business etiquette (礼节) also provides rules for late arrivals. Calling on the telephone if one is going to be more than a few minutes late for scheduled appointments is considered polite and is often expected. Keeping a date of a friend waiting beyond ten to twenty minutes is considered rude. On the other hand, arrivingthirty minutes late to some parties is acceptable.Respecting deadlines is also important in academic and professional circles. It is expected that deadlines for class assignments or business reports will be met. Students who hand in assignments late may be surprised to find that the professor will lower their grades or even refuse to grade their work. Whether it is a question of arriving on time or of meeting a deadline, people are culturally conditioned to regulate time.41. The best title for the passage is __A___.a. Promptnessb. Timec. Etiquetted. Culture42. If a person is late for business meeting, he may be __D___.a. Firedb. criticized by his bossc. required to apologized. made to pay43. In different situations, people have different expectations for punctuality.d. People in the United States value time very much.Part IV Cloze (1 point, 10%)If this turn of mind were founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The 46 to criticize and be disgusted is perhaps taken up originally by imitation. It grows into a 47 , unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it are 48 of its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of 49 to them, and help them change this habit.Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious 50 in life, since it brings on deep sorrow and 51 luck. Those people offend many others, nobody loves them, and noone treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect and scarcely that. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at obtaining some advantage in rank or 52 ,nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone speak a word to 53 their hopes. If they bring on themselves public disapproval, no one will 54 or excuse them. These people should change this bad habit. His parents hadn't enough money to send him to school. He had to help them to do something in the fields. But he didn't like to live in the poor place. When he was sixteen, he got to the town and found work in a factory. Three years later he became tall and strong. So he was sent to Africa as a soldier. He stayed there for five years and got some money. Then he came back to England and bought a shop in a small town. No people in the town went to Africa except him. And he hoped they thought he was a famous man and that they could respect him. The children often asked him to tell them some stories and his life in Africa. One day a few children asked him to tell them something about the animals in Africa. He told them how he fought with the tigers and elephants. His stories surprised them all and some policemen and workers went to listen to him. It made him happier. Just a man who taught geography in a middle school passed there. He stopped to listen to him for a while and then said, "Could you please tell us a rare animal, sir?""Certainly," said Mr. Turner. People sing and dance day and night. They have a good time. Most families buy a Christmas tree for their children. And there are some presents hanging from the tree here and there. People also put presents in children’s stockings. In many places, Father Christmas himself brings presents to them. He is a kind man and in red clothes. There is a big bag on his back. Does he have ways or tools of learning that are different from those of others? The answer is “no”. It is not the tools a scientist uses but how he uses these tools that make him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power is important to a carpenter. You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate, how to discover information, is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further, he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his questions and that his answer can be confirmed by other persons. He also works to fit the answer he gets to many questions into a large set of ideas about how the world works. The scientist’s knowledge must be exact. There is no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any changes the scientist observes in a demonstration must be explained by the changes in the conditions. This is one reason that investigations are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the theory of relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics. The accuracy of this math ematics was later tested through investigations, Einstein’s ideas were shown to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurements. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations. (263 words)41. What makes a scientist according to the passage?A. The tools he uses.B. The way he uses his tools.C. His way of learning.D. The various tools he uses.42. “The scientist, however, goes one step further…”. A sound scientific theory should be one that _______.A. works not only under one set of conditions at one time, but also under the same conditions at other timesB. does not allow any changes even under different conditionsC. can be used for many purposesD. leave no room for improvement44. The author quotes the case of Albert Einstein to illustrate _______.A. that measurements are keys to success in scienceB. that accuracy of mathematicsC. that the investigations are important in scienceD. that the mathematical calculations may test his investigations45. What is the main idea of the passage?A. The theory of relativity.B. Exactness is the core of science.C. Scientists are different from ordinary people.D. Exactness and ways of using tools are the keys to the making of a scientist.Passage 4A characteristic of American culture that has become almost a tradition is to respect the self-made man —the man who has risen to the top through his own efforts, usually beginning by working with his hands. While the leader in business or industry or the college professor occupies a higher social position and commands greater respect in the community than the common laborer or even the skilled factory worker,he may take pains to point out that his father started life in America as a farmer or laborer of some sort. This attitude toward manual(体力的)labor is now still seen many aspects of American life. One is invited to dinner at a home that is not only comfortably but even luxuriously(豪华地)furnished and in which there is every evidence of the fact the family has been able to afford foreign travel, expensive hobbies, and college education for the children; yet the hostess probably will cook the dinner herself, will serve it herself and will wash dishes afterward, furthermore the dinner will not consist merely of something quickly and easily assembled from contents of various cans and a cake or a pie bought at the nearby bakery. On the contrary, the hostess usually takes pride in careful preparation of special dishes. A professional may talk about washing the car, digging in his flowerbeds, painting the house. His wife may even help with these things, just as he often helps her with the dishwashing. The son who is away at college may wait on table and wash dishes for his living,or during the summer he may work with a construction gang on a highway in order to pay for his education.46. From Para.1, we know that in America _______.A. people tend to have a high opinion of the self-made manB. people can always rise to the top through their own effortsC. college professors win great respect from common workersD. people feel painful to mention their fathers as labors47. According to the passage, the hostess cooks dinner herself mainly because ________A. servants in American are hard to getB. she takes pride in what she can do herselfC. she can hardly afford servantsD. it is easy to prepare a meal with canned food48. The underlined expression “wait on table” in Para.2 means “_______”.A. work in a furniture shopB. keep accounts for a barC. wait to lay the tableD. serve customers in a restaurant49. The author’s attitude towards manual labor is _______.A. positiveB. negativeC. humorousD. critical50. Which of the following could be the best title of the passage?A. A Respectable Self-made Family.B. American Attitude toward Manual Labor.C. Characteristics of American Culture.D. The Development of Manual LaborIII. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single bar through the center of the letter that indicates your choice.Passage OneBook clubs are a great way to meet new friends or keep in touch with old ones, while keeping up on our reading and participating in lively and intellectually stimulating discussions. If you’re interested in starting a book club, you should consider the following options and recommendations. Before recruiting, think carefully about how many people you want to participate and also what the club’s focus will be. For example, some book clubs focus exclusively on fiction; others read nonfiction. Some are even more specific, focusing only on a particular type such as mysteries, science fiction, or romance. Others have a more flexible and open focus. All of these possibilities can make for a great club, but it is important to decide on a focus at the beginning so the guidelines will be clear to the group and potential member. After setting the basic principles, recruitment can begin. Notify friends and family, advertise in the local newspaperand on bulletin boards in local stores, colleges, libraries, and bookstores. When enough people express interest, schedule a kick-off meeting during which decisions will be made about specific guidelines that will ensure the club runs smoothly. This meeting will need to establish where the group will meet rotating homes or a public place such as a library or coffee shop; how often the group will meet, and on what day of the week and at what time; how long the meetings will be; how books will be chosen and by whom; who will lead the group if anyone; and whether snacks will be served and if so, who will supply them. By the end of this meeting, these guidelines should be set and a book selection and date for the first official meeting should be finalized.Planning and running a book club is not without challenges, but when a book club is run effectively, the experience can be extremely rewarding for everyone involved.11.When starting a book club, one should first.A.notify his friends and familyB.put an ad in a local newspaperC.decide on the focus and size of the clubD.consider when and where the group will meet12.According to Paragraph 2, the “focus” of a book club refers to.A.funds B.locationsC.book types D.members13.Which of the following would NOT be covered at the kick-off meeting A.Deciding on whether snacks will be served.B.Discussing whether to appoint a leader.C.Determiningthe club’s first selection.D.Planning the club’s yearly budget.14.Which of the following can be learned from the passageA.Starting a book club requires good planning.B.A book club is a place to make new friends.C.Starting one’s own book c lub is better than joining an existing one.D.Smaller groups are better for a variety of reasons.15.The best title for this passage could be“________”.A.Book Clubs: A Great Way to Meet Old FriendsB.Book Club Planning: A Great ChallengeC.Five Steps to Recruit Members for a Book ClubD.Starting a Successful Book Club: A GuidePassage TwoThe Mayan 玛雅Indians lived in Mexico for thousands of years before the Spanish arrived in the 1500s. The Maya were an intelligent, culturally rich people whose achievements were many. They had farms, beautiful palaces, and cities with many buildings. The Mayan people knew a lot about nature and the world around them. This knowledge helped them to live a better life than most people of that time, because they could use it to make their lives more comfortable and rewarding. Knowledge about tools and farming, for instance, made their work easier and more productive. The Maya believed in many gods, including rain gods, sun gods, and corn gods. The people built large temples to honor them. Skillful workers built cities around these temples. It was difficult for them to construct these cities, because they had no horses to carry the heavy stones they used to build with. Workers had to carry all ofthe building materials themselves. Today, many of these ancient Mayan cities and temples are still standing.Usually, only the priests lived in the cities. The other people lived in small villages in the forests. Their houses were much simpler than the elaborate structures in the cities. They lived in small huts with no windows. Most Maya lived a simple life close to nature.Measuring time was important to the Maya, so the Mayan priests made a system to keep track of time, and they made a calendar in which the year was divided into 18 months of 20 days each with five days left over. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer’s showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted. As Graduation Day approached, the young man waited for signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautifully wrapped gift box. Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man’s name in gold. Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said, “With all your money you give me a Bible ” He then stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible. Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and a wonderful family, but realizing his father was very old, he thought perhaps he should go to see him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make the arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things. When he arrived at his father’s house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart. He began to search through his father’s important papers and saw the still new Bible, just as he had left it years ago. With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. We seem to get one food scare after another.Several of these, recently, have concerned genetically modified GM,转基因foods. Although some experts tell us that these foods will do us no harm and that the concern about them is just speculative, other experts say that GM food is potentially very damaging to health. At the very best, the jury is still out on the matter. In many countries, products which have been genetically modified are supposed to show this information on their labels, but now some of the large food producers are saying that it is growing increasingly difficult to separate GM food from the conventional varieties.Pesticides 杀虫剂and chemical fertilizers are also a cause of concern. In the last few years, a great many people have started to buy organic produce, although this is much more expensive than that which is grown using conventional methods. They do so in an effort to stop filling their bodies, and those of their children, with poisonous chemicals. Thus there is an increased demand for organic food and this is not a temporary fashion. But some experts claim that organically grown food is no healthier than other food, because the poison level of the latter is not so high as to be harmful. Those who push for organic food may not be objective, but are part of the powerful food lobby, the chief concern of which is to increase organic food production with a corresponding increase in profits. The use of additives 添加剂is still another source of anxiety to consumers. These are often added to food to supposedly improve the colour or the flavour. However, it is thought that some of these may be the cause of allergies 过敏, or even the cause of behavioural problems in children. We have to eat to live. The problem is: what is safe to eat26.What is people’s main concern about GM foodsA.Some of them are not labeled with required information.B.They might posehazards we don’t know yet.C.They don’t have the same flavour as conventional foods.D.The sowing of them will damage the environment.27.What does the author mean by “the jury is still out on the matter” Para. 2 A.The matter is still uncertain.B.The matter needs a jury to judge.C.The jury to judge is not available.D.The matter is not important.28.In Paragraph 5, the author tries to tell readers that .A.experts agree that organic food is no healthier than other foodB.profit-makingmay be behind the drive to produce more organic foodC.the demand for organic food will not last longD.organic food may also contain poisonous chemicals29.It can be inferred from the last but one paragraph that food additives .A.may be harmful to children in particularB.are unnecessary in food productionC.are less poisonous than pesticidesD.do not improve the flavour30.Which of the following best describes the author’s view about the food we eat A.Unclear.B.Indifferent.C.Optimistic.D.Concerned.Part III Vocabulary and Structure 10 minutes, 10 pointsDirections:There are 20 incomplete sentences in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark your answer on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling or swimming, or, in winter, skating or skiing (滑雪). It may be a game of some kind --- football, hockey (曲棍球), golf, or tennis. It may be mountaineering. Those who have a passion (激情) for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonishment is caused, probably, by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no manmade rules, as there are for such games, as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of a different kind which it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from manmade rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods. If we compare mountaineering and other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a …team game‟. We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no …matches‟ between …teams‟ of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork. The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they probably climb with more skill and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.36.The difference between a sport and a game has to do with ______.A. the kind of activityB. the kind of rulesC. the kind of uniformD. the kind of participants (参与者)37.Mountaineering can be called a team sport because ______.A. it is an Olympic eventB. teams compete against each otherC. mountaineers depend on each other while climbingD. there are 5 climbers in each team38.Mountaineers compete against ______.A. natureB. each otherC. other teamsD. international standards39.The age during which people can enjoy mountaineering ______.A. is very restrictedB. is from 20 to 30C. is governed by lawD. is limited only by individual ability and desire40.Which is the best title for the passage?A. Mountaineering is Different from Golf and FootballB. Mountaineering is More Attractive Than Other SportsC. MountaineeringD. Mountain ClimbersPassage 2Conflict, like stress, is a natural phenomenon when people interact. Conflict in some form is always present; however, it is not always negative. Conflict can be positive, for example, when you and your colleagues try to select the best possible solution to a problem. However, much more attention is given to the negative aspects of conflict. Conflict occurs when we fear the unknown. This can be very simple: someone says something in a tone of voice different from our expectations, which raises questions in our mind as to what the real meaning might be. Of course conflict can, and does, occur in much more serious circumstances. Your ability to detect and understand conflict will place you in a better position to control the situation. Conflict is often categorized in three stages. Stage one is the day-to-day irritations (恼人的事) that are easy to deal with. Stage one conflict is real but low in intensity. The intensity can increase if irritations increase and no solutions are found. Stage two is reached when the two sides become competitive. Each person protects his self-interest and fears loss of face. Stage three is reached when the objective changes from wanting to win toward wanting to hurt the other side. This stage can be explosive because other people are drawn into the conflict and sides are chosen. Problem solving is no longer a realistic method of resolution. By understanding the three stages of conflict, it will be easier for you to handle the day-to-day situations to which you are exposed. You will also be able to detect potential conflict between others in which you do not want to get involved.41.Conflict is ______.A. paid attention to because it is negativeB. only positive when occurring between colleaguesC. universally present in human interactionsD. similar to stress in every aspect42.Stage two conflict is different from stage one conflict in that ______.A. it is caused by daily disputesB. it is low in intensityC. it takes a form of competitionD. it always leads to loss of face43.The third stage can be explosive because ______.A. quarreling becomes inevitableB. it is no longer a conflict between two individualsC. people begin to hate each otherD. no solution is possible44.The ability to identify conflict ______.A. can help you make good use of conflictB. enables you to win every competitionC. can prevent conflict from occurringD. can help you deal with the situation better45.The conflict between a student and his roommate caused by different living habits is aninstance of ______.A. stage one conflictB. stage two conflictC. stage three conflictD. none of the abovePassage 3All of us communicate with one another nonverbally (不使用语言地), as well as with words. Most of the time we‟re not aware that we‟re doing it. We gesture with eyebrows or a hand, meet someone else‟s eyes and look away, change posit ions in a chair. These actions we assume are occasional. However in recent years researchers have discovered that there is a system to them almost as consistent and understandable as language. One important kind of body language is eye behavior. Americans are careful about how and when they meet one another‟s eyes. In our normal conversation, each eye contact lasts only about a second before one or both of us look away. When two Americans look searchingly into each other‟s eyes, they become more intimate. T herefore, we carefully avoid this, except in suitable situations.Researchers who are engaged in the study of communication through body movement are not prepared to spell out a precise vocabulary of gestures. When an American rubs (磨擦) his nose, it may mean he is disagreeing with someone or refusing something. But there are other possible interpretations, too. Another example: when a student in conversation with a professor holds the older man‟s eyes a little longer than is usual, it can be a sign of respe ct; it can be a challenge to the professor‟s authority (权威); it can be something else entirely. The researchers look for patterns in the situation, not for a separate meaningful gesture.Communication between human beings would be just dull if it were all done with words.46.The main idea of this article is that ______.A. study of communication through body movement is a new scienceB. body movements are as important as words in communicationC. all of us communicate with one anotherD. eye behavior is the most important part in body language47.What do researchers think of body language?A. Body language can be understood and used by people in communication.B. Body language is more important than spoken language in communication.C. Body language has been discovered in recent years.D. Body language is the study of communication through body movement.48.The word “intimate” in paragraph 2 probably means ______.A. greatB. closeC. goodD. important49.According to the passage, you make an American person feel uncomfortable, if you ______.A. meet his eyesB. avoid meeting his eyesC. stare into his eyes for one secondD. look into his eyes for a long time50.The sentence “The researchers look for patterns in the situation, not for a separate meaningfulgesture” means ______.A. the researchers explain the meaning of a gesture according to the situation in which it isusedB. the researchers believe that one gesture has only one meaningC. the researchers think that one gesture can not be used in different situationsD. the researchers look for patterns in textbooks to explain the meaning of a gesturePassage 4How often one hears children wishing they were grown up, and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.Youth is a time when there are few tasks to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always presenting new things to the child --- things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is continually being told not to do things, or being punished for what he has done wrong. When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.51.People can experience happiness if they ______.A. always think of the past and regret itB. value the presentC. are no longer youngD. become old and have much experience52.When people were young, they used to ______.A. be in charge of many businessesB. have few things to think about and take onC. look after their younger sisters and brothersD. face a lot of difficulties53.The pains of children lie in the fact that ______.A. no one helps them make right decisionsB. they are often beaten by their parentsC. they can not be accepted and praised by othersD. they are not allowed to do what they like to do54.Children are usually happy because ______.A. old people lose interest in themB. they are free to do wrongC. they are familiar with everything going on around themD. things are new to them55.Which of the following is NOT needed for a young man to be happy?A.
