Pragma linguistic equivalence and socio-pragmatic equivalence are two principles we should adhere to in translations of signs and reminders.There are kinds of sign mistakes as followings.Firstly,the spelling error take a great proportion in public signs.For example,No Burning is written as No Buming,whose meaing has been totally changed.What’s more.The Fire Hydrant is turned into Fire Hydant and the Toilet to Toliet.Some of the signs call for capital in every letters while some just need the first letter only.Such as the EXIT,every letter should be capitaled.If a sentence is long ,it’s enough to capital the first letter.The spelling mistakes are mainly caused by carelessnesses that leave an awful impression on the foreigners.Secondly,the solecism is the killer of the signs.The literal translation is the typical mistake which translates the signs from Chinese to English word by word,resulting in the misunderstanding of the both Chinese and foreigners.As we all know ,some Chinglish signs are hilarious jokes.When you see the sign“Carefully fall down to the river!”,you may feel surprised why set such a signalong the bank?However ,the utter and true meaning of this sentence is “Caution! Over a period of three months, we methodically canvassed the city's commercial districts, residential neighborhoods, and public spaces, photographing and cataloging any instances of misspelled words on signs, banners, or other publicly visible text.Each misspelling was carefully recorded, along with information about the type of business or organization associated with the sign, the apparent severity of the error (e.g., minor typo, phonetic misspelling, or completely mangled word),and any potential contextual factors that might have contributed to the mistake.After compiling this data, we performed a quantitative analysis to determine the frequency of misspellings across different types of businesses and organizations, as well as the distribution of error severity levels. 二、语料搜集目前,宁波一些公众场合的英文标示语翻译,花样百出,存在着太多的不统一。
英文标识不仅仅是作为一种装饰而设的时髦形式,它应该有着积极的现实意义。
对于中国人而言,我们是因为知道中文才看出英译的不当,而那些需要英文路标指示的外国人,面对混乱的标识,只能一筹莫展。
现在,我们来看一下在宁波一些带有英译的公示语。

吸烟区smoking allowed也应改为smoking area。
宁大附属医院那边有牌子,写着:禁止车辆驶入closed to all vehicular traffic,而正确的译法很简单,No entry即可。
2.译文与原文意思不符在东门口的国美,紧急出口被译为了Exit,Exit只有出口的意思,而Emergency Exit才是紧急出口。
在万达广场外,非机动车禁止入内所对应的译文是vehicles only,vehicles是陆上交通工具的统称,motor vehicles only才是正确的译文。
而有一家宁波阳光假期旅行社他的名称翻译的是ningbo shine holiday travel service,shine 作名词时是光泽光亮的意思,要体现阳光的意思只能是sunshine,而且旅行社也有专门的翻译叫travel agency,因此,这家旅行社名字的翻译应为ningbo sunshine holiday travel agency。
再有,克丽缇娜国际美容生活馆翻译的是chlitina international beauty life of curator,而curator 的意思是博物馆、美术馆等的馆长,和本身想表达的意思不符。
根据全国公示语翻译语料库,美容生活馆应译为Beauty Lounge。
新华书店的一块牌子,防火卷帘下请勿站人译的是fire door to be kept closed at all times,英文的字面意思是:防火门应始终关闭。
全国公示语翻译语料库里有类似的一句:防火卷帘门请勿堆物,开关操作时请勿站人,所对应的译文为warning:Keep everything clear of the automatic fireproof sliding door.Stand clear when in operation。
3.拼写错误石浦大酒店new shipu hotal,酒店应拼为hotel捷信数码相机Jession Diqital Camera,数码应拼为Digital东方商厦内,针织内衣翻译的是knitting under wear,underwear是一个单词,应该连起来;烟酒译的是tobaccoandil quor,如果所用的词不改变的话,也应该是tobacco and liquor。
这显然是制作公示牌的人不懂英语所造成的。
标准的译法应该是tobacco and alcoholic drinks重点旅客候车室importance passenger waiting room,importance是名词,不能用来形容passenger真要用这些词,也应该是important passenger waiting room,这话翻译成VIP waiting room即可。
4.中式英文东方商厦的总服务台翻译的是total service desk,这是句非常典型的chinglish,完全按照中文逐字翻译过来,真确的译文应该是Reception。
滋补品译成了food supplement,supplement 是补充的意思,滋补品应译为tonic。
最可笑的是淑女装的翻译,shufemale attire,直接把淑的拼音加到female前面去合成了。
温馨生活馆翻译的是warm life hall,上海新东方的邱政政老师认为,英文里面其实没有“温馨”所对应的词,而用comfortable space来解释温馨生活馆更为恰当。
南站的检票口译的是ticket gate,口于gate相对,正确的译文应是ticket check,西厅候车的翻译为waiting east room应该译成the west waiting hall或者是the west waiting lounge。
宁波站欢迎您译的是ningbo station wel comes,完全按照中文的顺序!宁波的各条道路上方都有这样蓝色的牌子,写着:请按车道行驶Please drive the correct way,但标准的译文应该是Use Correct Lane5.望文生义在宁波火车南站,出口处被译为了exportation,但这个单词的意思是进出口贸易的出口,于本意相差甚远,应译为Exit。
6.地名翻译不规范再个有问题的是宁波地名的翻译问题,宁波路牌上的地名一律用的是大写的拼音,如翠柏路为CUIBAI LU,大卿桥为DAQIN QIAO,中山西路为ZHONGSHAN XILU。
将汉语地名译成英语时,应遵守约定俗成的规范。
