a scene to remember

gu qiubei

shanghai international studies university

advisor: gong longsheng

good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. today i would like to begin with a story.

there was once a physical therapist who traveled all the way from america to

africa to do a census about mountain gorillas. these gorillas are a main attraction

to tourists from all over the world; this put them severely under threat of poaching

and being put into the zoo. she went there out of curiosity, but what she saw

strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those

beautiful creatures. she witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never

imaged weve ever been, where in the very depth of the african rainforest, surrounded

by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas cuddled their babies.

yes, thats a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called gorillas in

the mist, based on a true story of mrs. dian fossey, who spent most of bet lifetime

in rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.

to me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a

timeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our ecoenvironment.

1 / 3 deforestation to heat lodges is devastating nepal. oil spills from tourist boats

are polluting antarctica. tribal people are forsaking their native music and dress

to listen to u2 on walkman and wear nike and reeboks.

all these appalling(令人震惊的) facts have brought us to the realization that

we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been

eroding(侵蚀) our resources. encouragingly, the explosive growth of global travel

has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the united nations has made 2002

the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the worlds attention the

benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our ecoenvironment.

now every year, many local ecoenvironmental protection organizations an:

receiving donations--big notes, small notes or even coins--from housewives,

plumbers(水管工人), ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and

invalids(残疾人), some of them can not afford to send the money but they do. these

are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from

ecological damage in their neighborhood. why? because they care. because they still want their mother nature back. because they

know it still belongs to them.

the other night, as l saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent

into the

invisible, my mind was filled with songs. i found myself humming softly, not to

the music, but to some- thing else, someplace else. a place remembered, a place

untouched, a field of grass where no one seem to have been except the deer.

2 /

3 and all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that its lime for

us to do

and no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our mind, theres always

a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it.

thank you very much.

Follow these 7 steps and you will be confident Are you good enough, clever enough, good looking enough? If you think not, would you consider your answer to be objective? Are you one of those people who has an inner critic that Satan would be jealous of? Well it’s time to see yourself as you really are; gifted, worthy and capable of anything you chose to be. Time to put an end to yourself criticism and look at yourself objectively. Follow these 7 steps below and you will be lacking in confidence no more. 1.Monitor the Negative Voice Start by monitoring your negative voice. Notice when you are self-critical, and observe the conversations that go on in your head. When you become aware of the conversations, you can then work on changing them. Your job is to ensure that the voice in your head is positive and supportive at all times and not negative and critical. 2. Friends &Family Ask your family and friends for their honest opinions about what your strengths are. What do they think you are good at? What were you good at when you were a child? If you want an extensive review, write out a checklist, and ask them what they think of you in the listed areas. Ask a couple of people and then you can see if the opinions are similar—just make sure the person you ask is not someone who is jealous of you or would have any reason to hurt or offend you. 3. No Comparisons Don’t compare yourself with others—it’s a recipe for disaster. You only need to be good enough for you, so it doesn’t matter what you sister, brother, friend or enemy has achieved. Make your own standards and set goals that are right for you. 4. Journalling Take a long look at yourself and write a page describing yourself. Journalling can be a great way to look at yourself objectively. Tell your story like it belongs to someone else. What do you honestly think you are good at? Nobody has to see what you write, just write for you. Write down all of your past achievements—start with last year and write about anything that went well, and then extend the list year by year, making sure you include all of your achievements. 5. Personality Assessment

A man came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find his 5-year old son waiting for him at the door. “Daddy, may I ask you a question?” “Yeah sure, what is it?” replied the man. “Daddy, how much do you make an hour?” the man said “That’s none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?” angrily. “I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?” pleaded the little boy. “If you must know, I make $20 an hour.” “Oh,” the little boy replied, with his head down. Looking up, he said, “Daddy, may please borrow $10?” The father was furious, “If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I work hard every day for such childish behavior.” The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and h started to get even angrier about the little boy’s questions. How dare he ask suc questions only to get some money? After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10 and he really didn’t ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the l ittle boy’s room and opened the door. “Are you asleep, son?” He asked.

The spring festival was approaching. It occurred to him that he didn’t go back home for a very long time when he saw an old woman hugged a young boy with tears in the chill evening. Yes, he didn’t go back to his hometown for 3 years after graduation. He studied pedagogy in the university but he decided to do business. His boss asked him to undertake the business during spring festival for 5 years in exchange for a promotion to the general manager of a branch. To a man like him, it’s a seductive opportunity. He took it though the spring festival was the only holiday that long enough to go back home. With 3 years passed, he now lived a perspective of great paradox. On the one hand, he need to be wary of everything at anytime when he was in the company. He was afraid to be dismissed before his boss could have the chance to fulfill his promise. On the other hand, he seemed to be set adrift in a sea of unknown people. Everyday he ate alone, walked alone and smiled alone. His phone rang. “It must be my father”,he thought. “ How are you? “ I am fine, how are you? Is mother there?” “ Your mother let me ask you when do you come back, she is on the bed.” “ I..., is she watching TV, please ask her to take good care of her eyes. I remember” “Go back home in this spring festival. I think this will be the last command if i haven’t lost prestige in this family in your mind.” ...... He didn’t want to be on the defensive of his condition. What his father did is only to express their yearning of the only son. He didn’t feel it demean to let his parents to find a presentable job for him in his hometown, but the failure of self-realization made him breathless. After all, he worked in the company for 3 years. Yes, the job was both a detriment to him and his parents. It made both of them in the throes of separation. At last, he went back home. It’s sorrowful to work outside without any achievements, but no one knows how grief will he be if he turned to be a teacher as the way that his father had paved for him without having to try to pursue his dream.

our future: a battle between dreams and reality good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen: when i was in the primary school, i have a dream. i want to invent a device which could bring you from one place to another in no time at all. when i was in the secondary school, my dream was to study in my ideal university. and when eventually i got into the university, my dream was to graduate. ladies and gentlemen, the reality is not real. it is a barrier keeping us from all the possible fantasies. flying, for example, had been a dream to mankind for thousands of years. a hundred years ago, man could not fly was still regarded as the reality. now if that was really the reality, what did the wright brothers do? how did some of you get to macau? only when we believe that the reality is not real can we soar with our dreams. people say that our future is a battle between the reality and our dreams. and if, unfortunately, mr. reality wins this war, then i see no future of mankind at all. aids will never be curable as this is the reality; people living in the undeveloped countries will suffer from starvation forever as this is the reality; 4)disputes among different countries would never be settled as this misunderstandings and intolerance is the reality. ?÷3?è?£othank you. 2ü·á£othank you. ?êìa£onow in the age of the internet, reading books does not seem as important as it once was.do you think people can learn as much on the internet as they can by reading books?which method do you prefer? ?êìa£ocontestant no.13.thank you very much for encouraging us to be unrealistic dreamers(thank you) and not surrender to mr.reality.(hehe..) with the traffic jam getting worse--especially in big cities--im actually very interested in your childhood dream:to invent a device that can move people around easily.is this still your dream?if not,why do you give it up?is it because it is considered unrealistic?thank you. ??′e£othank you very much.this is not my dream now.not because it is (not), realistic.maybe you can say its unrealistic.but if i,my interest is still inventing this device,i will keep on trying my best to invent this decive.my changing of my dreams is because of the fact that i realized my interest does not lie in science.now i am a law school student.but last semester,as ive just mentioned,i was working on my physics essay paper and actually last semester i was a student in the school of aerospace.oh my god, aerospace!and ive changed my major to law school.and so ?êìa£othank you very much for your speeches.talding about internet,i just want to know your view.do you believe everything is ture on the internet?if not,why not? ??′e£othank you very much.i dont believe everything is true in the internet.this is a straight forward answer.and if not,why not?because i dont believe them.and i have an experience of meeting someone on the internet who claims to be a girl.yes and,a very sad, sorry story for me.but yes,for this reason,i think i dont believe that everything on the internet is true.but i will try my best to discover if that was true or not,or that was falsified or not.thank you very much.

The man, seeing that the boy already had money, started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money, then looked up at his father. “Why do you want more money if you already have some?” the father grumbled.“Because I didn’t have enough, but now I do,” the little boy replied. “Daddy, I have $20 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you.”

A man came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find his 5-year old son waiting for him at the door. “Daddy, may I ask you a question?” “Yeah sure, what is it?” replied the man. “Daddy, how much do you make an hour?” “That’s none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?” the man said angrily.“I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?” pleaded the little boy. “If you must know, I make $20 an hour.” “Oh,” the little boy replied, with his head down. Looking up, he said, “Daddy, may I please borrow $10?” The father was furious, “If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I work hard every day for such childish behavior.” The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy’s questions. How dare he ask suc h questions only to get some money? After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10 and he really didn’t ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the lit tle boy’s room and opened the door. “Are you asleep, son?” He asked. “No daddy, I’m awake,” replied the boy. “I’ve been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier,” said the man, “It’s been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you. Here’s the $10you asked for.” The little boy sat straight up, smiling. “Oh, thank you daddy!” He yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills. The man, seeing that the boy already had money, started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money, then looked up at his father. “Why do you want more money if you already have some?” the father grumbled.
