For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single bar through the center of the letter that indicates your choice.Passage OneImpatience has been around for a long time. There is nothing new about people losing their patience while stuck in traffic or waiting in line. But some experts believe that people are less patient today than in the past. (第11 题)Some analysts suggest that in recent years many people are less patient because of technology. ( 第12 题) They suggest that “digital technology, from cellphones to emails to iPads, is changing our lives. The instant results we get from this technology have in turn increased our desire for instant satisfaction in other aspects of our lives.” Psycholog ist Jennifer Hartstein makes some observations. She explains that “we have become an immediate satisfaction culture, and we expect things to move quickly, efficiently and in the way we want. When that doesn’t happen, we tend to become increasingly frust rated and unsatisfied.”Some believe that e-mail is losing popularity and could soon become outdated. Why? Because many people who send messages do not have the patience to wait hours, or even minutes, for a response. (第13 题) Also, with e-mails, as with letter writing, introductory and concluding greetings are often expected. But many people consider such formalities (客套)to be boring and time-consuming. They prefer instantmessaging. Many people do not take the time to proofread what they put in writing. As a result, letters and e-mails contain numerous grammatical and spelling errors. (第14 题)The thirst for immediate results is not limited to the digital communications.People seem to be losing their ability to wait in other areas of life. For instance, do you ever find yourself talking too fast, eating too fast, driving too fast, or spending money too fast? The few moments it takes to wait for an elevator to come, for a traffic light to change, or for a computer to start may seem like too long a time.11. According to the first paragraph, people ____.A. have been patient for a long timeB. were more patient in the pastC. used to be patient while stuck in trafficD. used to be patient while waiting in line12. Nowadays people lose their patience because ____.A. their desire for satisfaction has increasedB. they are bored with what they haveC. their life has been changed by technologyD. they have more things to do than before13. Some believe that e-mail could soon become outdated because ____.A. it takes a long time to start the computerB. people value formalities between friendsC. cellphones are more popular nowadaysD. people can hardly wait for a response14. The pursuit of instant results causes people to ____.A. have more errors in their writingsB. become more impoliteC. use voice messages instead of emailsD. lose many of their abilities in life15. The best title for the passage might be“____”A. Are We Less Patient Today?B. What Are the Problems Caused by Impatience?C. What Happened to Technology?D. Has Digital Technology Changed Our Lives?BCDAAPassage TwoKids often ask Scout Bassett, of Palm Desert, California, if she wishes she hadtwo normal legs. Scout, 18, answers, “No. I have never known anything different, and it would seem weird to me. Besides, if it weren't for the missing leg, I wouldn’t have the opportunities I have today!” (第16 题)Scout has faced big challenges. When she was only months old, she suffered from terrible burns. Her right leg was especially damaged, and doctors cut it off above the knee. When she was 14, she got a high-tech leg made for sports and put it to the test right away in a race for disabled athletes. “I remember being terrified because this was my first time,” she says. “But my doctor said, ‘You have to start somewhere.’” (第17 题)Scout was waiting nervously for the race to start when athlete Sarah Reinertsen came up and said, “I’ve been doing this for a while. Let me give you some tips.” Reinertsen, who lost her leg when she was seven, is the first disabled woman to have finished the Ironman Triathlon(铁人三项)in Hawaii. She works with an organization to help support people like Scout.Reinertsen’s encouragement changed the teenager’s life. She lost that first race, but gained the confidence that she needed to compete. If Sarah could do it, she could too. Training hard, she now runs competitively and also finds time to share her story 3with school groups. (第19 题)“Sometimes people look at me or at Sarah and think they have nothing in common with us. I tell them that even if you aren’t physically challenged, everybody has challenges of some kind—maybe with family, or homework, or friends. No matter what it is, you can overcome that obstacle,” she says, “Everything you need is inside your heart. (第20 题) Take small steps. Nora noticed a guy sitting inside a cardboard box next to a newsstand. She pulled at my coat sleeve and said, “That man’s cold, Daddy. Can we t ake him home?” (第21 题)I don’t remember my reply, but I do remember a sudden heavy feeling inside me. I had always been delighted at how much my daughter noticed in her world, whether it was birds in flight or children playing. But now she was noticing suffering and poverty. She wasn’t even four. (第22 题)A few days later, I saw an article in the newspaper about volunteers who delivered4meals to elderly people. ( 第23 题)The volunteers went to a nearby school on aSunday morning, picked up a food package, and delivered it to an elderly person. I signed us up. Nora was excited about it. She could understand the importance of food, so she could easily see how valuable our job was. When Sunday came, we picked up the package and phoned the elderly person we’d been assigned. She invited us right over. The building was depressing. When the door opened, facing us was a silver-haired woman in an old dress. She took the package and asked if we would like to come in. Nora ran inside. I reluctantly followed. Our hostess showed us some photos of her family. Nora played and laughed. I accepted a second cup of tea. When it came time to say good-bye, we three stood in the doorway and hugged. I walked home in tears. Where else but as volunteers do you have the opportunity to do something enjoyable that’s good for yourself as well as for others? Indeed, the poverty my daughter and I h elped lessen that Sunday afternoon was not the woman’s alone—it was in our lives, too. Now Nora and I regularly serve meals to needy people and collect clothes for the homeless. Yet, as I’ve watched her grow over these past four years, I still wonder—which of us has benefited more? The best title for this passage might be “____”A. A Loving KidB. Volunteers at WorkC. How to Help the NeedyD. A Lesson in CaringABCDD5Passage FourScientists measured the impact that people have on the environment using a termcalled carbon “footprint.” That footprint reflects the amount of carbon dioxide that is emitted(排放) into the atmosphere as a result of someone’s daily activities. (第26 题)Carbon footprints tend to be low for city dwellers(城镇居民). Living in a suburb outside a city, however, can turn that footprint into a bootprint. (第27 题) Energy researchers Christopher Jones and Daniel Kammen calculated carbon footprints for people in every zip code across the United States. People living in city centers had small footprints, the researchers found. “It is much easier to have a low carbon impact if your home is close to where you work, shop and play,” explains Jones. Living within walking or biking distance cuts back on the amount of carbon dioxide associated with moving people by cars. (第28 题) And cities with extensive bus and subway networks allow people to travel great distances while keeping releases of climate-altering greenhouse gases low.Not everyone can afford to live in the city, however. And not everyone wants to. Rings of suburbs have popped up around major cities across the world. Suburbs offer more space, allowing people to build larger homes. Suburbs may offer better schools for a family’s kids. But those homes are typically well beyond walking distance from where their owners work, play or learn. So people who live in suburbs often drive long distances. The new findings are an important contribution to climate research, says Matthew Kahn, (第29 题) an environmental economist at the University of California, who wasnot involved with the study. Kahn would like to see the analysis applied to other parts of the world—Europe, India and China, for instance. That would give scientists a better feel for how culture might mix with location to influence our carbon footprints.26. “Footprint” refers to the amount of carbon dioxide released by ____.A. an individualB. an industryC. a regionD. a country27. What is the new finding concerning the footprints of people living in cities and those living in suburbs?A. The two are not at all comparable.B. The former are higher than the latter.C. Dr. Aiken cut the background from the photos for the purpose of __________.A. imitating the couplesˇ lifeB. grouping the couples againC. leaving no trace for the testeesD. giving the testees more chances22. The underlined sentence ¨Their judgements were no better than chance〃 implies that the testees __________.A. did a good job in making their choices.B. had difficulty in picking out the partnersC. had no chance to make the right judgementsD. did better with the first group than with the second23. The underlined word ¨imitate〃(in Para. 2) has a similar meaning to __________.A. copyB. changeC. knowD. suffer24. From the passage we can draw the conclusion that ___________.A. couples who look alike can live longerB. most partners have been proved to grow alikeC. the influence between partners can be quite strongD. happily-married couples are often richer than others25. The main purpose of the passage is to ___________.A. explain why couples grow alikeB. tell how couples like each otherC. discuss the function of marriageD. describe the life of happily married couplesThe three biggest lies in America are: ( 1 ) “ The check is in the mail ” ( 2) “ Of course I’ll respect you in the morning .” ( 3 ) “ It was a computer error . ”Of these three little white, the worst of the lot by far is the third. It’s the only one that can never be true. Today , if a bank statement cheats you out of $900 that way , you know what the clerk is sure to say: “ It was a computer error . ” Nonsense. The computer is reporting nothing more than what the clerk typed into it.The most annoying case of all is when the computerized cash register in the grocery store shows that an item costs more than it actually does. If the innocent buyer points out the mistake, the checker , bagger and manager all come together and offer the familiar explanation: “ It was a computer error . ”It wasn’t, of course . That high-tech cash register is really nothing more than an electric eye. The eye reads the Universal Product Code—that ribbon of black and white lines on the package—and then checks the code against a price list stored in memory . If the price list is right, you’ll be charged accurately.Grocery stores update the price list each day—that is , somebody sits at a keyboard and types in the prices . If the price they type in is too high, there are only two explanations: carelessness or dishonesty. But somehow “a computer error is supposed to excuse everything”.One reason we let people hide behind a computer is the common misunderstanding that huge, modern computers are “electric brains”with “artificial intelligence.” At some point there might be a machine with intelligence, but none exists today. The smartest computer on earth right now is no more “ intelligent ” than your average screwdriver (螺丝刀) . At this point in the development of computers, the only thing any machine can do is what a human has instructed it to so .26. Of the three lies, the one about computer is the worst because the computer itself __________.A. says nonsenseB. cheats customersC. cannot make the errorD. does not admit its error27. According to the author, a computerized cashier is really just ___________.A. a machine to count moneyB. a machine to receive moneyC. an instrument to print codesD. an instrument to read codes28. Grocery store price lists are updated by ____________.A. a computerB. a keyboardC. an employeeD. an electric brain29. The last paragraph of the passage implies that computers ____________.A. are very cleverB. never make mistakesC. have a good memoryD. are controlled by men30. Which of the following describes the main idea of the passage?A. Computers are stupid and inefficient.B. Computer errors are due to its dishonesty.C. Computers help stores update the price list.D. Computer errors are actually human errors.Passage FourI came across an old country guidebook the other day. It listed all the tradesmen in each village, and it was impressive to see the past variety of services which were available on oneˇs own doorstep in the late Victorian countryside.Nowadays a traveler in rural England might conclude that the only village tradesmen still flourishing wereeither selling frozen food to the villagers or selling antiques to visitors. Nevertheless, this would really be a false impression. On the surface, there has been a decline of village commerce, but its power is stillremarkable. Our local grocerˇs shop, for example, is actually expanding in spite of the competition from supermarkets in the nearest town. Women sensibly prefer to go there and exchange the local news while doing their shopping, instead of queuing up at a supermarket. And the grocer knows well that personal service has a considerable cash value. His prices may be a bit higher than those in the town, but he will deliver anything at any time. His assistants think nothing of bicycling down the village street in their lunch hour to take a piece of cheese to an old retired woman who sent her order by word of mouth with a friend who happened to be passing. The richer customers telephone their shopping lists and the goods are on their doorsteps within an hour. They have only to hint at a fancy for some commodity outside the usual stock and the grocer, a red faced-figure, instantly obtains it for them.31. Nowadays the commercial services in the village are ____________.A. still very activeB. quickly decliningC. unable to flourishD. personal to visitors32. The local grocerˇs shop is expanding because _____________.A. the competition there is weakB. it is a place for women to chatC. it provides good personal serviceD. the goods there are more valuable33. Which of the following is true about the supermarkets?A. Prices there are much higherB. Customers often have to queue up.C. Customers can order by telephone.D. Their personal services are satisfactory.34. How do the village grocerˇs assistants feel about giving extra service?A. They donˇt think it a trouble.B. They donˇt think it worthwhile.C. They donˇt consider it a good deal.D. They donˇt consider it a pleasant experience.35. One special feature of the village shop is that ___________.A. there is a very wide range of goods availableB. customers can order goods by word of mouthC. customer have to order goods one hour earlierD. there is a list of goods to be delivered to doorstepsPart III Vocabulary and Structure (20 points)Directions: There are 40 incomplete sentences in this part. Each of the passages is followed by 5 questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET.Passage OneKids often ask Scout Bassett, of Palm Desert, California, if she wishes she had two normal legs. Bassett, 18, answers, “No. I have never known anything different, and it would seem weird to me. Besides, if it weren’t for the missing leg, I wouldn’t have the opportunities I have”Scout has faced big challenges. When she was months old, she suffered from terrible burns. Her right leg was especially damaged, and doctors cut it off above the knee. When she was 14, she got a high-tech leg made for sports and put it to the test right away in a race for disabled athletes. “I remember being terrified because this was my first time,” she says. ”But my doctor said, ‘you have to start somewhere.’”Scout was waiting nervously for the race to start when athlete Sarah Reinertsen came up and said,”I’ve been doing this for a while. Let me give you some tips.” Reinertsen, who lost her leg when she was seven, is the first disabled woman to have finished the Ironman triathlon(铁人三项) in Hawaii. She works with an organization to help support people like Scout.Reinertsen’s encouragement changed the teenager’s life. She lost that first race, but gained the confidence that she needed to compete. If Sarah could do it, she could too. Training hard, she now runs competitively and also finds time to share her story with school groups.“Sometimes people look at someone like me or at Sarah and think they have nothing in common with us. I tell them that even if you aren’t physically challenged, everybody has challenges of some kind---maybe with family, or homework, or friends.”“No matter what it is, you can overcome that obstacle,” she says. “Everything you need is inside your heart. Take small steps. As time goes by, the steps will get bigger and you will reach your dream.”16.Why does Scout answer “No” when asked if she wants two normal legs?_______A. She’s scared of changing her current situation.B. She couldn’t have them even if she wanted to.C. She has never thought of it before.D. She’s satisfied with what she has achieved as a disabled.17. What does the doctor mean by saying “You have to start somewhere”(para.2)________A. She has to do it sooner or later.B. She has to find the right place to to start.C. That will be a memorable first time.D. That is a perfect time to start.18. Scout’s childhood experience _______.A. were the cause of her shynessB. were a nightmare until she reached 14C. didn’t stop her from fulfilling herself.D. didn’t have much influence on her later life.19. Which of the following statements is true?________A. Sarah shared her story with school students.B. Sarah started to compete at the age of seven.C. Scout has been inspired by Sarah’s success.D. Scout joined Sarah’s organization to help others.20. Through Scout’s story, the author wants to tell us _________.A. the disabled are mentally stronger than othersB. inner strength can help one overcome difficultiesC. good things will come no matter whatD. everybody has to challenge himselfPassage TwoIMPATIENCE has been around for a long time. There is nothing new about people losing their patience while stuck in traffic or waiting in line. But some experts believe that people are less patient today than in the past-and for reasons that might surprise you. Some analysts suggest that in recent years many people are less patient because of technology. They suggest that “digital technology, from cellphones to cameras to email to iPads, is changing our lives. The instant results we get from this technology have in turn increased our desire for instant gratification in other aspects of our lives.”Psychologist Jennifer Hartstein makes some observations. She explains that “we have become an immediate satisfaction culture, and we expect things to move quickly, efficiently and in the way we want. When that doesn’t happen, we tend to become increasingly frustrated and unsatisfied. Some believe that e-mail is losing popularity and could soon become outdated. Why? Because many people who send messages do not have the patience to wait hours, or even minutes, for a response. Also, with e-mails, as with letter writing, introductory and concluding greetings are often expected. But many people consider such formalities(客套)to be boring and time-consuming. They prefer instant messaging。

Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET.Passage OneWe are all busy talking about and using the Internet, but how many of us know the history of the Internet? Many people are surprised when they find that the Internet was set up as recently as the 1960s. At that time, computers were large and expensive. Computer networks didn’t work well. If one computer in the network broke down, then the whole network stopped. So a new network system had to be set up. It should be good enough to be used by many different computers. If part of the network was not working, information could be sent through another part. In this way the computer network system would keep on working all the time.At first the Internet was only used by the government, but in the 1970s, universities, hospitals and banks began to use it, too. However, computers were still very expensive and the Internet was difficult to use. At the beginning of the 1990s, computers became cheaper and easier to use. And scientists developed software that made Internet “surfing” more convenient.Today it is easy to get online and it is said that millions of people use the Internet every day.16. He did not even look at Alan. Alan spoke to him again. “Excuse me, sir,” he said, “but could you please tell me what time it is?”This time the man looked at him, but he did not speak and looked quickly away. Alan thought to himself: well, he can hear me; he must be just rude. So Alan asked again, “Why wouldn’t you tell me the time, sir?”The man turned towards him and said, “Put yourself in my shoes. I am standing here waiting for a taxi. You come up to me and ask me for the time. If I tell it to you, you will thank me. I will say ‘That’s all right.’ You may then say ‘It’s a beautiful day,’ to which I may reply ‘Yes, I like these sunny winter days.’Before we know what is happening we have a friendly conversation. Le t’s start with four. The beach, famous for its water temperature, air temperature and waves, is the first beauty. There are hundreds of miles of beaches on the twenty islands of Hawaii. They are thought to be among the finest beaches in the world. Then, what do you think would be the second beautiful thing? It is volcanoes (火山), of course. These volcanoes are not just a part of the islands; they made the islands in the first place. Because of them the islands are still growing. What would be the third thing of beauty that the first visitor to Hawaii would notice? It probably wouldn’t be just one thing, but many things: all the wonderful fruits and flowers of the islands. Sugar cane, bananas and pineapples are Hawaii’s biggest exports. Sugar cane has been growing in Hawaii for a thousand years. As for pineapples, the islands produce more than any other places in the world, which has made Dole Company the biggest fruit-packing company in the world. The fourth and most beautiful thing about Hawaii is the people who live there. The Hawaiians never rush, and perhaps this is because they care more for human life than they care for the machine. There is an old Hawaiian law that a man can go to sleep in the middle of the road if he wants to. What makes the people of Hawaii so beautiful is their feeling about people. There are 64 different combinations of races on the islands, and they all live in peace. They believe “Above all nations is humanity.”That is the most beautiful thing of all.26. According to the passage, Hawaii is made up of B__.A. one islandB. twenty islandsC. sixty-four islandsD. hundreds of islands27. Why are the volcanoes so special to the islands? BA. They are not a part of the islands.B. They actually made the islands.C. They are the first in the world.D. They are growing.28. What has made Dole Company the biggest fruit-packing company in the world? DA. Sugar.B. Sugar cane.C. Bananas.D. Pineapples.29. The people in Hawaii are the most beautiful thing because _ D_.A. they had a peaceful historyB. they can sleep in the middle of the roadC. there are 64 different races on the islandsD. they care more for people than anything else30. According to the passage, “above all nations is humanity” might mean __C .A. not all nations have humanityB. humanity is as important as a nationC. humanity has no national boundariesD. all human beings should live in peace Passage FourThere is a measurable relation between how much a person learns and his attitude toward the subject to be learned. When faced with a difficult learning task, one path to success is to concentrate on the positive aspects of the subject matter. If a student has a boring teacher, one solution is to look for the positive aspects of completing the course, regardless of how boring the teacher happens to be. To accomplish this might require a private tutor or some independent reading, but with the right attitude, success is possible.Over-achievers – students who do better than their test scores show – usually have a positive interest toward learning. They may learn some things more slowly, and they may make more efforts, but, to compensate (补偿), they are often better at applying what they have learned. As long as they do not have emotional problems, they are successful.Under-achievers – those who function below their ability shown by test scored – often tend to allow a few negative factors to affect them. Because of their negative attitudes, they sometimes become unfairly critical of teachers. They allow themselves to get bored when it is not necessary. In short, their attitudes often cause them to learn less than over-achievers.If you learn to replace a negative attitude toward learning with something more positive, you are on the road to achieving almost any goal you desire. For example, if you realize a personal computer with a word processor would improve your performance, but have an attitude that keeps telling you that a computer is difficult to operate, you tend to make all kinds of excuses. In short, you resist making full use of a terrific tool, simply because your negative attitude prevents you from learning.31. What does the author think a student should do if he has a boring teacher? DA. Look for a new course.B. Be critical of the teacher.C. Complete the course with a good score.D. Have a right attitude toward the teacher.32. The writer thinks that over-achievers and under-achievers mainly differ in __C.A. their test scoresB. their judgment of othersC. their attitudes toward learningD. their skills in using computers33. The underlined phrase function below their ability shown by test scores means the under-achievers B_.A. often get low scores in testsB. do worse in actual learning than in testsC. usually do better in tests than the over-achieversD. are always slow in learning and have to make more efforts34. The example of the personal computer shows that __B.A. finding excuses helps in learningB. to react negatively can be harmfulC. hard-working is the key to successD. making use of the computer is important35. What is the main idea of the passage? AA. Attitudes play an important role in learning.B. Students should learn how to use personal computers.C. Teachers are not so important in the learning process.D. There are many differences between over-and under-achievers.Part III Vocabulary and Structure (20 points)Directions: There are 40 incomplete sentences in this part. Passage TwoThe faces of elderly,happily-married people sometimes resemble each other.Dr.Aiken studied a number of couples who had been married for at least twenty-fiveyears.Each couple provided four photographs-one photo of each partner at the time of their marriage and another photo of each partner twenty-five or more years later. All background was cut from the photos to remove any clues. The photos were thendisplayed in groups :a random grouping of the persons at the time of theirmarriage and another random grouping of the same persons who took photographslater. Some judges were asked to pick out the partners. They failed totally with thefirst group.Their judgements were no better than chance. But with the photos taken twenty-five or more years after the marriage, the judges were quite successful at deciding who was married to whom. They were particularly successful with the most happily-married couples.Dr.Aiken believes there are several reasons why couples grow alike. One reason has something to do with imitation. One person tends to copy or do the same as someone else without knowingit. He says human begins imitate the expressions of the faces of their lovedones.Another possible reason,he says,is the common experience of thecouples. There is a tendency for people who have the same life experience tochange their faces in similar ways. For example,if a couple suffered from a lot ofsad experiences, their faces are likely to change in a similar way .21. Dr. Aiken cut the background from the photos for the purpose of __________.A. imitating the couples ˇ lifeB. grouping the couples againC. leaving no trace for the testeesD. giving the testees more chances22. The underlined sentence ¨Their judgements were no better than chance 〃implies that the testees __________.A. did a good job in making their choices.B. had difficulty in picking out the partnersC. had no chance to make the right judgementsD. did better with the first group than with the second23. The underlined word ¨imitate 〃 (in Para. 2) has a similar meaning to __________.A. copyB. changeC. knowD. suffer24.F rom the passage we can draw the conclusion that___________. A. couples who look alike can live longerB. most partners have been proved to grow alikeC. the influence between partners can bequite strong D. happily-married couples areoften richer than others25.T he main purpose of the passage is to ___________.A. explain why couples grow alikeB. tell how couples like each otherC. discuss the function of marriageD. describe the life of happily married couplesThe three biggest lies in America are: ( 1 ) “ The check is in the mail ” ( 2)“ Of course I’ ll respect you in the morning . ” ( 3 ) “ It was a computererror . ”Of these three little white, the worst of the lot by far is the third. It ’ s the only one that cannever be true. Today , if a bank statement cheats you out of $ 900 that way , youknow what the clerk is sure to say: “ It was a computer error . ” Nonsense. The computer is reporting nothing more than what the clerk typed into it.The most annoying case of all is when the computerized cash register in the grocery storeshows that an item costs more than it actually does. If the innocent buyer points out the mistake, the checker , bagger and manager all come together and offer the familiar explanation:“ It wasa computer error . ”It wasn ’t, of course . That high-tech cash register is really nothing more than an electric eye.The eye reads the Universal Product Code — that ribbon of black and white lines on the package—and then checks the code against a price list stored in memory . If the price list is right, you ’ llbe charged accurately.Grocery stores update the price list each day— that is , somebody sits at a keyboard andtypes in the prices . If the price they type in is too high, there are only two explanations:carelessness or dishonesty. It listed all the tradesmenin each village, and it was impressive to see the past variety of services which were available on one ˇ sown doorstep in the late Victorian countryside.Nowadays a traveler in rural England might conclude that the only village tradesmen still flourishing wereeither selling frozen food to the villagers or selling antiques to visitors. Nevertheless, this would really be a false impression. On the surface, there has been a decline of village commerce, but its power is still remarkable. Our local grocer ˇshop, for example, is actually expanding in spite of the competition from supermarkets in the nearest town. Women sensibly prefer to gothere and exchange the local news while doing their shopping, instead of queuing upat a supermarket. And the grocer knowswell that personal service has a considerable cash value. His prices may be a bithigher than those in the town, but he will deliver anything at any time. His assistants think nothing of bicycling down the village street in their lunch hour to take a pieceof cheese to an old retired woman who sent her order by word of mouth with a friendwho happened to be passing. The richer customers telephone their shopping lists andthe goods areon their doorsteps within an hour. They have only to hint at a fancy for some commodity outside the usual stock and the grocer, a red faced-figure, instantly obtains it for them.31. It’s the only one that can never be true. Today , if a bank statement cheats you out of $900 that way , you know what the clerk is sure to say: “ It was a computer error . ”Nonsense. The computer is reporting nothing more than what the clerk typed into it.The most annoying case of all is when the computerized cash register in the grocery store shows that an item costs more than it actually does. If the innocent buyer points out the mistake, the checker , bagger and manager all come together and offer the familiar explanation: “ It was acomputer error . The smartest computer on earth right now is no more “intelligent ”than your average screwdriver (螺丝刀) . At this point in the development of computers, the only thing any machine can do is what a human has instructed it to so .26. Of the three lies, the one about computer is the worst because the computer itself __________.A. says nonsenseB. cheats customersC. cannot make the errorD. does not admit its error27. On the surface, there has been a decline of village commerce, but its power is still remarkable. His assistants think nothing of bicyclingdown the village street in their lunch hourto take a piece of cheese to an old retired woman who sent her order by word of mouthwith a friend who happened to be passing. Thericher customers telephone their shoppinglists and the goods are on their doorstepswithin an hour. They have only to hint at afancy for some commodity outside the usualstock and the grocer, a red faced-figure, instantly obtains it for them.31.
