高中英语课外阅读(一)Stars rise from the eastFINALLY, the wait is over. Much to the excitement of fans, South Korean boy band Dong Bang Shin Ki released their new album, Mirotic, on September 29. Once again, the five boys have displayed their appeal (吸引力) with powerful beats (节拍) and memorable tunes (曲调).The title of the leading song, Mirotic, comes from the Korean word "miro" which means "maze" (迷宫) and the English suffix (后缀) "tic". "It's like being trapped in a maze."It is reported that the album has sold 90,000 copies two days after its release. "We have plunged (投入) ourselves into the producing work. We see the album as an opportunity to show our fans that we have made progress on adaily basis," said member Xiah (金俊秀). "We won't let them down."It is this aspiring (有抱负的) attitude that keeps the band going in the highly competitive entertainment world. u The band never sets boundaries (边界) to their music styles. But the Taiyuan girl began drinking it because her mom, as well as many others, said that milk was good for her growing body. Besides, milk and bread made up a convenient (方便的) diet that helped save her parents a lot of time after Song entered junior high and had to arrive at school early in the morning. Hence (从此), Mengniu and Yili became her favorite brands (牌子) of morning milk and yoghurt after dinner. However, she has been forced to change her diet since the recent milk crisis (危机). Many best-selling home milk brands such as Mengniu, Yili and Bright were discovered to contain melamine (三聚氰胺), which is usually used to make plastic (塑料). The bad milk products have sickened more than 53,000 babies and killed four.“I shifted (转向) t o rice porridge,” she said. “My mom has to get up at 5:50 am to prepare my breakfast and make sure that it cools down when I get up.”Song has become addicted (上瘾的) to milk, so she doesn’t quite enjoy her morning meal these days although she knows that it’s a tiring job for her working mom.“I’ll turn back to Mengniu and Yili when they finally improve their products,” she said. However, right now Song’s mom tries to adjust (调整) her eating habits by cooking different foods. Besides rice porridge, noodles, egg drop soup and soybean milk are prepared to diversify (使多样化) her breakfast.“I’m considering buying a soybean grinder (豆浆机), but the prices of soybean grinders are scaling up (攀升) these days,” complained her mother.Beijing student Huang Shuang’s family has a grinder, and soybean milk has become a regular (通常的) recipe in the family during the weekends. From Monday to Friday, the 16-year-old has given up drinking Mengniu for Sanyuan, the only big brand that passed the quality test two weeks ago. The milk crisis has also warned her to develop a cautious (谨慎的) habit when shopping for food.“I have started to pay attention to when and where my purchases (所购商品) were made,” Huang said.高中英语课外阅读(三)Future has arrivedHAS English football finally found a new star? A few days ago, 19-year-old Theo Walcott came onto the scene by scoring a hat-trick (帽子戏法) for England in a 4-1 victory over Croatia.Walcott’s lightning (闪电) speed and accurate (准确的) shooting have turned the teenager into an overnight (一夜成名的) star. Many think he is a new dawn for the England team.It was symbolic (象征意义的) that Walcott's goals came from the right-wing (右侧). The position had been played by "golden boy" David Beckham for more than 10 years. No longer were the cheers for Beckham. The fans' hopes now rested on the shoulders of Walcott. The teenager's rise to fame (成名) has not been completely out of the blue. He was part of England's World Cup team in 2006, but he did not get to play a match. He has also spent over two years at Arsenal, where he is fast becoming a key player. But few were expecting the wonderful performance on September 10. The teenager was the first England player to score three goals in a game since Michael Owen did so seven years ago.Although England is full of superstars, they have a poor record in major tournaments (比赛). But things are beginning to change. The win against Croatia was sweet revenge (复仇). Croatia was the team which knocked England out of Euro 2008.England fans begin to hope for World Cup victory in South Africa in 2010. England has not lifted the trophy (奖杯) since 1966.But before England fans get too carried away, they must remember that placing a country's hopes on one teenager is dangerous.Walcott's club manager, Arsene Wen ger, warned (警告) that the 19-year-old cannot be expected to shine in every game.Still, with less than two years until the World Cup, England's fans are starting to dream.。

高中英语课外阅读材料经典高中英语课外阅读材料(一)加倍重视自己的价值Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold.Amulberry leaf(桑叶) touched with the genius of man becomes silk.A field of clay touched with the genius of man becomes a castle.A Cyprus tree touched with the genius of man becomes a shrine.A cut of sheep's hair touched with the genius of man becomes raiment for a king.If it is possible for leaves and clay and wood and hair to have their value multiplied a hundred, yea a thousandfold by man, cannot I do the same with the clay which bears my name?Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold.I am liken to a grain of wheat which faces one of three futures. The wheat can be placed in a sack and dumped in a stall until it is fed to swine. Or it can be ground to flour and made into bread. Or it can be placed in the earth and allowed to grow until its golden head dividesand produces a thousand grains from the one.I am liken to a grain of wheat with one difference. The wheat cannot choose whether it be fed to swine, ground for bread, or plantedto multiply. I have a choice and I will not let my life be fed to swine nor will I let it be ground under the rocks of failure and despair to be broken open and devoured by the will of others.Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold. To grow and multiply it is necessary to plant the wheat grain in the darkness of the earth and my failures, my despairs, my ignorance, and my inabilities are the darkness in which I have been planted inorder to ripen. Now, like the wheat grain which will sprout and blossom only if it is nurtured with rain and sun and warm winds, I too must nurture my body and mind to fulfill my dreams. But to grow to fullstature the wheat must wait on the whims of nature. I need not wait forI have the power to choose my own destiny.Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold. And how will I accomplish this? First I will set goals for the day, the week, the month, the year, and my life. Just as the rain must fall before the wheat will crack its shell and sprout, so must I have objectives before my life will crystallize. Insetting my goals I will consider my best performance of the past and multiply it a hundredfold. This will be the standard by which I will live in the future. Never will I be of concern that my goals are too high for is it not better to aim my spear at the moon and strike only an eagle than to arm my spear atthe eagle and strike only a rock?Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold. The height of my goals will not hold me in awe though I may stumble often before they are reached. If I stumble I will rise and my falls will not concern me for all men must stumble often to reach the hearth. Only a worm is free from the worry of stumbling. I am not a worm.I am not an onion plant. I am not a sheep. I am a man. Let others builda cave with their clay. I will build a castle with mine.Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold. And just as the sun must warm the earth to bring forth the seedling of wheat so, too, will the words on these scrolls warm my life and turn my dreams into reality. Today I will surpass every action which I performed yesterday. I will climb today's mountain to the utmost of my ability yet tomorrow I will climb higher than today, and the next willbe higher than tomorrow. To surpass the deeds of others is unimportant; to surpass my own deeds is all.Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold. And just as the warm wind guides the wheat to maturity, the same winds will carry my voice to those who will listen and my words will announce my goals. Once spoken I dare not recall them lest I lose face.I will be as my own prophet and though all may laugh at my utterances they will hear my plans, they will know my dreams; and thus there willbe no escape for me until my words become accomplished deeds.Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold.I will commit not the terrible crime of aiming too low.I will do the work that a failure will not do.I will always let my reach exceed my grasp.I will never be content with my performance in the market.I will always raise my goals as soon as they are attained.I will always strive to make the next hour better than this one.I will always announce my goals to the world.Yet, never will I proclaim my accomplishments. Let the world, instead, approach me with praise and may I have the wisdom to receive it in humility.Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold. One grain of wheat when multiplied a hundredfold will produce a hundred stalks. Multiply these a hundredfold, ten times, and they will feed all the cities of the earth. Am I not more than a grain of wheat?Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold. And when it is done I will do it again, and again, and therewill be astonishment and wonder at my greatness as the words of these scrolls are fulf in me.高中英语课外阅读材料(二)世界上最遥远的距离The furthest distance in the worldIs not between life and deathBut when I stand in front of youYet you don't know thatI love youThe furthest distance in the worldIs not when i stand in font of youYet you can't see my loveBut when undoubtedly knowing the love from bothYet cannotBe togehterThe furthest distance in the worldIs not being apart while being in loveBut when plainly can not resist the yearningYet pretendingYou have never been in my heartThe furthest distance in the worldIs notBut using one's indifferent heartTo dig an uncrossable riverFor the one who loves you世界上最遥远的距离,不是生与死而是我就站在你的面前,你却不知道我爱你世界上最遥远的距离,不是我站在你面前,你却不知道我爱你而是明明知道彼此相爱,却不能在一起世界上最遥远的距离,不是明明知道彼此相爱,却不能在一起而是明明无法抵挡这股想念,却还得故意装作丝毫没有把你放在心里世界上最遥远的距离,不是明明无法抵挡这股想念,却还得故意装作丝毫没有把你放在心里而是用自己冷漠的心,对爱你的人掘了一条无法跨越的沟渠高中英语课外阅读材料(三)难忘的野营When I was a boy, I belonged to the Boy Scouts so I used to go camping every summer, and once something happened which I have never been able to explain. We were camping in a place above a river. After arriving, we all rushed down to the river and had a swim. Standing by the river, we noticed that it was surrounded(环绕) by cliffs(悬崖). If someone wanted to reach the river at this point, he had to walk past our camp.Several days later, the scoutmaster had to be away for a day. That afternoon, we had supper early. We were sitting round the fire, eating and talking, when a man walked past and went down towards the river. We all felt that this man looked very strange, but, because each of us was afraid of looking very stupid, no one said anything. We ate rather slowly, taking as long as possible. After finishing, we collected our plates together so that we could take them to the river where we always washed them. But no one moved towards the rivere stood looking at each other ashamed. Then all shouting at once, we began talking about the man who had walked past us. We agreed how strange he looked and we wondered what he could be doing by the river. We knew that he could only return by passing through our camp.An hour passed. Then one of the boys suggested we shouldcreep(悄悄移动) down by the river so that we could see what the man was doing. Moving very slowly and keeping in the shadow, we crept down towards the bank. One boy climbed a tree so that he could see everything clearly. He called to us that there was no one there, so we ran down to the bank, looking everywhere carefully. We could not understand where the man had gone. When it got dark, we went back to our camp feeling bewildered. We told the scoutmaster what had happened in the evening. Smiling, he doubted that we had seen the man, but finally suggested we go and look again. We did, but there was no one there. Many years have passed, but I still remember it as if it were yesterday. What did we see? I do not know.。

高中英语话题阅读(一)Germany's iron ladyIN the office of the German Chancellor (总理) Angela Merkel, there is a picture of Catherine the Great, the legendary (传奇的) Russian Empress. When asked why she has the picture, Merkel says, “She was a strong woman”. Many say the same of Merkel. The most powerful woman in the world, according to US Forbes (福布斯) magazine, was in China last week. She came to discuss trade and environmental issues with China’s top leaders.Germany’s first woman leader is known as a brave and down-to-earth statesman (政治家). Even since her time at school, she had the habit of getting everything in order. Every day before doing her homework she would clean the desk and think about what to do next. “I prefer a long time for full preparations to make my decision. But once I decide, I will stand up for what I believe,” Merkel said.Perhaps it was good habits that helped her do well in her studies. At 32, she got a doctorate (博士学位) in physics and then she worked as a researcher. However, the life of a scholar (学者) couldn’t put her off a love of politics. While working in labs, Merkel took time off to read political books and at last join a political party. “Her calmness helped her stand out in the party. She could always find a way out while others felt hopeless,” said one of her old friends. In her first big political job as Minister for the Environment in 1994, her scientific background proved very useful. In 2005 she became Germany’s youngest chancellor since World War II.Now half way through her four-year term, the 53-year-old woman has made a name for herself both in Germany and abroad. At the EU summit (峰会) in 2005 when France quarreled with Britain over the EU budget (预算), some people believed the EU was close to breaking down. But Merkel didn’t give up. She shuttled (穿梭) between the heads of the two powers and got them to compromise (妥协).“Strength comes from composure (镇定) and courage. Many people say I am a strong woman. But I would rather say I have perseverance (恒心) ,” said Merkel.Merkel’s love of the ‘beautiful game’There are many sides to the Hamburg-born woman. For example, did you know she is a football fan? Last year a leading German sports magazine interviewed her. Her answers left no one in doubt about her passion (热情) and knowledge of the game. She could even explain the offside (越位) rule! She also said she likes to have company when watching football. During EURO 96, when she was Minister for the Environment, she went into a pub to watch games on TV.高中英语话题阅读(二)Do you prefer the British or American accent?MANY English learners have difficulty deciding what kind of English accent they want to have. A US accent, perhaps modeled (模仿) on the way a Hollywood star speaks? Or maybe you want to imitate (模仿) the British accent of a BBC newsreader?Young British people find the US accent attractive while young US people like a British accent. Especially when the personspeaking is of the opposite sex! Let's listen to what they have to say.Stephen Yang, 17, from London, UK:A US accent is cute, especially when a girl speaks it. Whether it's Jessica Alba speaking or the girl-next-door, the way US girls speak has a sweet tingle that is really sassy (时髦). A girl from Texas recently moved into our neighborhood. Her Texan twang (鼻音) had all the boys here on their knees within seconds of meeting her.To me, accents reflect (反映) the attitudes, characteristics and lifestyles of the people.Jennifer Sun, 14, from New Jersey, US:From watching English actors like Daniel Radcliffe, my friends and I have developed a soft spot for British men. Some are attracted to the qualities of English males, while others admire their sense of style.Everyone, however, agrees that the most appealing (有吸引力的) aspect of an English man is his accent. For example, many American girls watch Harry Potter movies over and over again just to listen to the actors speak. The English accent seems almost like art.。

高中英语短篇课外阅读1What danger? Hoodies just keep you warmWHEN one Olympic host city passes the torch on to the next, the new host city usually stages a celebration of national identity (特点).After 12 months of secret planning, London has finally revealed (透露) just what will happen at its handover (交接) performance in the closing ceremony (闭幕式) of the Beijing Olympic Games: The unruly (桀骜不驯的) spirit of Britain’s "hoodie" culture will take center stage. The hoodie, short for "hooded sweatshirt", is upper-body clothing with a hood (兜帽). It has been popular among young people. In the UK, however, hoodies have been the subject of much criticism as well. Some thieves have used the hood to hide their identity from monitoring (监控) cameras in shopping centers. A hoodie with a baseball cap has become a trademark (标志) of the "chavs" — young people from a low social class who are often assumed (认为) to engage in criminal (犯罪的) activity.Gradually, however, people have begun calling for a tolerant (宽容的) attitude towards hoodies. In 2005, Coombeshead College in southwest England allowed the hoodie to become part of the boys school uniform. In July 2006, David Cameron, leader of the Conservative Party, said: "The hoodie is a response to a problem, not a problem in itself. Hoodies are a way to stay invisible (隐身的) in the street. In a dangerous environment, the best thing to do is keep your head down, blend in."The emergence (出现) of hoodie dancing has also helped people to see hoodies in a positive light. "We use dance to challenge the negative image of youth culture," said Kenrick Sandy, a choreographer (舞蹈指导) of the hoodie dancing group Boy Blue. "Many people have stereotypes and think that we''re a threat just because we wear hoodies, but that''s ridiculous. A hoodie doesn''t make you dangerous – it just keeps you warm."高中英语短篇课外阅读2Lavigne is all about musicWHO are the artists singing all day long on your MP3 player? They may be Jay Chou, Angela Chang or S.H.E. But when it comes to a foreign singer, Avril Lavigne is the one who is worth listening to.The Canadian star's hit single Girlfriend was named the top download of 2007 by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (国际唱片业协会). She will be touring China this month for her "The Best Damn Tour" concerts. It is reported that the pop/rock princess will play at Guangzhou first on September 27, followed by other cities including Chengdu (September 30), Shanghai (October 4) and Beijing (October 6). Lavigne, 25, will perform her most popular hits in the concerts, including Complicated, Girlfriend, and My Happy Ending.Lavigne has been on the music scene for six year. She has proven that she is not simply another pretty face. Lavigne prefers to wear loose (宽松的) trousers, old T-shirts and a frown (皱眉).That's not like the tight* clothes and sweet smiles of many pop stars.Lavigne knew that she could never be like Britney Spears. In her high school days, "I was only around guys," she said. "I hung out with guys, playing hockey (曲棍球) and sometimes getting in fights. My band members were all guys."It was not until she got older that she started acting more girly. "From then to now, I look really different — but that's called growing up," she said.Lavigne was only 15 when she was discovered. At that time she had no idea how to make an album. "A career just came early for me. I was trying to figure out this life," she said. "My friends still don't know if they want to be a teacher or a doctor. When I talk to them, they'll tell me they have exams the next day."So what does Lavigne think about life? "Life is like a roller coaster (过山车). Live it, be happy," she said.高中英语短篇课外阅读3Getting lost across the pondDAVID Beckham, one of the world's most famous athletes, was at a press conference (新闻发布会). He held his new Los Angeles Galaxy jersey (球衣) in his hand. Beckham said he couldn't wait to play football in LA. Then he stopped, laughed and said, "I mean soccer."Beckham, the England native, is truly an international man. So he remembered that while the games are the same, some of the sports terms are different in the United States than in Britain. Now, Beckham can't forget that while in England he plays football on a pitch (球场), in the US he plays soccer on a field. After the game is over Beckham might want to change out of his uniform and into regular (平常的) clothes. In the US he'll bewearing sneakers and perhaps a light sweater. But if he were back home in England he'd be wearing trainers and a jumper. After training, Beckham might need to relax. So one of his American teammates might hand Beckham a paddle (球拍) and challenge him to a ping-pong game. Even here Beckham could be confused. In Britain they call it table tennis and play with a bat.But Beckham is rich and famous so he would never get upset. After playing ping-pong he might try to become really American and go watch a baseball game. Of course, if he didn't know better he'd ask to watch "rounders", which is what the British call baseball.Of course, while these word differences might seem confusing, Beckham probably thinks they are no big deal. Remember, he used to play in Spain. Hay muchacho (Oh, boy)!!。

高中英语阅读(一)Meteor is backThe new F4 in Meteor Rain (from left to right): Yu Haoming (Hua Ze Lei),Zhu Zixiao (Xi Men),Zhang Han (Dao Ming Si) and Wei Chen (Mei Zuo)THOSE who watched Taiwan's TV drama Meteor Garden (《流行花园》), eight years ago, remember it fondly. The Japanese manga (漫画) based series made stars out of Barbie Xu and the idol (偶像) group F4 and its members Jerry Yan, Vaness Wu, Vic Zhou, and Ken Chu.But the TV drama's popularity didn't end there. First, Japan was unhappy that someone else had stolen the limelight (抢风头,抢镜) from their own manga. So in 2005 and 2007, they produced their own Hana Yori Dango. South Korea then aired their own version, Boys Before Flowers, soon afterward at the end of 2008. And last month, Hunan TV began filming their reproduction Meteor Rain in Xiamen. The lead roles will be played by Happy Boys Yu Haoming and Wei Chen, and several other newcomers.Perhaps because the Taiwan version (版本) was so popular and there have already been so many re-adaptations (改编), Hunan TV's remaking has led to plenty of discussion and complaints among netizens (网民).According to them the Taiwan version is "first love", the Japanese version "is good", and the South Korean version"fashionable" though "full of kimchi (泡菜) flavor". So what is the Hunan TV version left with? Many students at Xiamen University are also angry about the re-adaptation, as most scenes will be shot on their campus. They think the new series might affect their university's image (形象), as the show is mostly about love and violence and students from rich families. However, the producers say they are going to remove a lot of the violence. They also plan to change the plot, turning what is a romantic idol drama into an inspirational (励志的) show. How do you feel about the suggested changes, and who will become your favorite among the new F4? The drama is expected to reach TV by the summer.高中英语阅读(二)Sun plays with the starsOF the three Chinese players in the NBA, Sun Yue is with the most star-studded (明星云集的) team –the Los Angeles Lakers. No matter how well you play, you have to coordinate with (协调) others. In the NBA, brains, instead of your body or build, play the key role in winning a match. Wisdom outweighs (比……重要) anything for a basketball player.Teens: It is said that you have to collect balls in training sessions (训练课). Is that normal for newcomers in the NBA?Sun:Every player in the league has to do that, not just the new faces. We all share the duty regardless of being old or newin the NBA.Teens: How have you adjusted to (调整) your new life? Did your team help you to fit in?Sun: I''ve got familiar with the environment in Los Angeles, and most importantly developed friendships with other players on and off the court. In the matches, I play with them. After the matches, I enjoy chatting and eating with them. The older ones have never asked me to run errands (跑腿) like carrying bags or shopping for them. But you can''t rely on the team to fit in. New players have to take the initiative (主动) themselves, sharing their ideas with their teammates and coaches. Being active and communicative with others is the best way to fit into a team.Teens: What have you learnt from Kobe Bryant? What kind of player do you admire most?Sun: Kobe works extra hard in training to earn his place in the team, and I respect his incredibly (难以置信地) strong desire to beat others on the court.I admire those players with good organizational skills or leadership in the team.高中英语阅读(三)Fun way to learnEVERY person studying a new language wishes he or she could find a patient native speaker who will politely correct mistakes and teach some useful new vocabulary. But native speakers can be hard to find. If you're having trouble connecting, American sitcoms (连续剧) are one way to fill the gap. They are not only a mine of information about American culture, they also offer some useful language instruction. Watching them will help you expand your vocabulary and teachyou correct language usage in different situations. Best of all, sitcoms are a fun way to learn. And, to get you started, Teens has picked two hot ones. The Apprentice (《飞黄腾达》)This American reality TV show is hosted by famous businessman Donald Trump. It's based on the idea of the ultimate (最终的) job interview for the ultimate job. The show picks 15 people to compete for a job with Trump's business. Contestants who fail their weekly tasks have to meet with Trump. They have to argue their case, explaining why they should not be fired. The Apprentice is useful for English students who want to learn how to structure a persuasive argument. Key to the contestants' success in the competition is their ability to represent themselves with words and win arguments. For example rather than say, "I think I did a good job", candidates learn to get rid of the possibility of doubt and say, "I did a good job."Desperate Housewives (《绝望主妇》)Desperate Housewives (DH) is a comedy-drama series set in a fictional (虚构的) American town, Wisteria Lane. It follows a group of middle-aged female friends as they go through their daily struggles and family lives. But under the surface, the friends live a life of lies, secrets, criminal (犯法的) acts, and mystery. This program is good at expressing the amusing co-existence of American neighbors in suburban areas. No other program on TV does as good a job at showing that. And, it's the perfect sitcom for foreign learners wanting to see how to hold a casual (非正式的) conversation.Another reason for watching DH is to learn some expressions American families use that don't appear in your English languagetextbooks. Words such as "sport" and "you guys", which the mothers often use to refer to their kids.。

适合高中阅读的英语文章(一)Adventure continuesIT has been 19 years since Indiana Jones wore his leather (皮的) jacket and swung (甩) his whip (鞭子) across a movie screen. But on May 22, the famous archaeologist (考古学家) comes back in the series' fourth movie called, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal (水晶) Skull (头骨).And many Americans, who grew up loving the adventurer, are ready for his return. Because Jones did more in his three previous movies than simply hunt for treasure, he also found his way into the heart of American culture. To understand why Americans feel so strongly toward Jones, one must first understand the character. The movies take place in the 1930s. Henry "Indiana" Jones Jr. is an archaeology professor. His life is boring. So Jones decides he wants more and he creates his own persona (角色). He becomes Indiana Jones, a treasure hunter who travels the world, defeats bad guys and always wins the girl.Yet, Jones is not a super hero. He gets hurt, he gets angry and he is deathly afraid of snakes. And that is why he is so popular. "Indiana Jones is not a perfect hero, and his imperfections, I think, make the audience feel that, with a little more exercise and a little more courage, they could be just like him," said Stephen Spielberg, the director of the Jones movies.Harrison Ford, the actor who plays Indiana Jones said the fun of playing the character was because Indiana is both romantic and cynical (愤世嫉俗的).It is these two personalities that Americans can relate to. America was built on dreams. And one dream many Americans still hold is that there can be more to life than simply work. They want excitement and adventure and that is what Jones has given Americans over the years. A chance to escape from their own ordinary lives and think, just maybe, they could put on a leather jacket and become a hero too.适合高中阅读的英语文章(二)A leap of faithTIGER Leaping Gorge in Yunnan Province is a beautiful place to hike. Instead, we just kept climbing and then he said: "Don't worry, we'll just hitchhike (搭车) back." But the problem was, from where we were, high on the mountain, we couldn't get to the road. We walked through bushes (树丛) and over rocks until hours later we found the road.We started walking, hoping a car would stop and pick us up. Five minutes went by. Then half an hour. Still no cars. I started getting angry. "Don't worry," Tom said. Finally, a car came. But it was full. The sky became dark. Finally, a car stopped. The driver wanted 50 yuan to drive us. But Tom said, "No, it was too expensive." The man drove away.It started raining. We walked for hours and reached town at nightfall. We were supposed to take a 10-yuan bus to Shangri-La(香格里拉), but it had already left. I was getting sad, wet and cold. But Tom said, "Don't worry."Finally, we saw a van (货车) driven by two young guys. They offered to drive us. It would cost 400 yuan. But now I didn't care how much it cost. Before Tom could open his big mouth, I gave them the money. The kids drove very fast. I was scared for my life. Tom said: "Don't worry." We almost drove off the road five times but finally we made it there. Tom smiled and said, "See, I told you not to worry."。

高中英语课外阅读(一)Captain who has it allCESC Fabregas appears to have it all. He is the star performer for top English premiership (英超) club Arsenal and a multimillionaire at the age of 21. If all of that wasn't enough, on November 24, Fabregas was appointed new captain of the club."It's a proud moment and a great honor," said the Spaniard (西班牙人). "But this is also a big responsibility. Together with my teammates, we have the spirit and commitment (承诺) to get back to winning and fulfill our potential."However, there are people who doubt that Fabregas is too young to shoulder the responsibility. But Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager, said: "It's not especially linked with age. Most of the time, responsibilities make you grow, make you become more mature (成熟的) and you deal with the situation."Fabregas is one of rising talents among the young generation of players. He helped Spain to win the European Championship this year and has established himself as a key player for Arsenal. But he does not want to settle for just being a good footballer. He began a correspondence (函授) course in the equivalent (相当于) of A-levels (exams taken by students who want to go to university), fitting his studies around his football duties. "Thereare seven subjects, including math, science, Spanish, English and French. First I have to pass an exam. Then I have to do a course for one year and then I can go to university," he said.Fabregas has not returned to the classroom in the traditional sense. Teachers come to his home to teach him math and science — "they are the most difficult" — for four hours a week. He does some of his tutorials (辅导课) via webcam (摄像头). Much of his time will be spent studying at home or on the road. So, what is the motivation for this highly-paid young man with the football world at his feet? "I think it is good for the future," he said.高中英语课外阅读(二)Brazil's wonder kidIN football, nothing is more valuable than the wonder kid. Managers spend plenty of their time searching for these rare gems (宝石).Anderson Luis de Abreu Oliveira is one such gem from Brazil. He won the Tuttosport Golden Boy Trophy (奖杯) on December 7. The award is given to the best player in Europe under the age of 21.Anderson plays for Manchester United and he has already won the Premier League (英超) and the Champions League (冠军联赛) with his team. In fact, Anderson even scored a penalty (点球) in the Champions League final.”[He is] 20, with the decision-making, position-taking intelligence of a 30-year-old. Short at 1.76m, yet muscular (强健的) and rapid enough to win most physical battles,” writes Duncan Castles, reporter with Britain''s The Guardian newspaper. And Anderson is glowing (焕发) with self-confidence. ”Scared? I''ve never been scared of anything,” hesaid. ”When the subject is playing football, I''m not scared of anyone. You are there for the football; you are there to have fun, to play.”But in the eyes of Brazilian journalists, Anderson still needs time to mature (成熟). They described him as ”arrogant (傲慢的)”. ”He rolled up to the team''s London hotel in an expensive Audi R9, R&B blaring (鸣响) from the sound system and strode (大踏步) past reporters,” they said.Anderson is honest in his attitude toward money. ”Yes, I like money a lot. Who doesn''t?”.Anderson''s father died in 2001 and by the age of 14, his youth-team salary (薪水) in a local club in Brazil supported his mother, sister and two brothers. ”I became used to being a man very young. I was 15, but already thinking as if I was 22, 23 or 24 and making very tough decisions about my future. I had to help the family, but that was also a responsibility. And that I still do today and hope to be able to do for my family until I am 60.”高中英语课外阅读(三)Spears defines a generationTHE newest generation of American teenagers has been raised on a diet of YouTube, Facebook and American Idol. These inventions are harmless but when combined they have created a culture where teenagers want to be rich and famous and believe everyone should know everything about their lives. The spokesperson for this fame-hungry, talent-less generation is Britney Spears. At a young age, Spears seemed to have it all. She was starring on the Mickey Mouse Club TV show when she was 11. At 18, Spears released her debut album Baby One More Time. The album instantly made Spears a pop icon (偶像). She had millionsof dollars and was on top of the world. But as the saying goes, “the higher you are, the harder you fall.”With fame came an obsession (着魔) into Spears'' personal life. Photographers followed her everywhere she went. Eventually, she couldn''t take it anymore and she made a series of bad decisions. First, she married a high school friend. But the marriage only lasted a matter of hours. Then she married her back-up dancer, Kevin Federline, who was a known playboy. Then she shaved her head and suffered a big breakdown. She did all of this with the world watching. But then her father, Jamie, stepped in and took control. Spears took sometime away from the spotlight to get things in order. Now she is promoting her new album, Circus, which is a good word to describe her life. The CD is currently No 1 in America. It has been a crazy ride for Spears but when judging her, remember that she was once a sweet, young girl whom a lot of people thought they could make money off. Even with all she''s been through, she''s only 27 years old.So for any young person out there, who is posting videos on YouTube and dreaming about becoming famous, remember to be careful what you wish for. You might just get it.。

高中年级英语课外阅读文章(一)Do you want a cupcake?YOUR mom might cook a bowl of noodles for you on your birthday. But in the US, a mom makes a cupcake (杯形蛋糕) for her children on their birthday.Cupcakes are small, round cakes topped with frosting (糖霜). It has been an American tradition that moms bring cupcakes to the classroom to celebrate th eir child’s birthday. But recently some doctors have called for this to be banned (禁止). They believe cupcakes contribute to child obesity (肥胖).Despite their good intentions, however, some people believe that experts are interfering (妨癨-) with American culture. The cupcake is seen as American as apple pie — only prettier.According to Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition at New York University, the cupcake is the most democratic (民主的) of desserts. As they are small enough for one person, you don’t have to share your cupcake with anyone —it’s all yours. They are also all the same size, so there can’t be any cries of “she got the bigger piece!”Each bite can taste different depending on how much icing you have. It is a lesson in self-determination (自主). Some people eat only a little of the frosting every time, others have it all in just one bite.In recent years, eating a cupcake has become as trendy as having a cup of Starbucks coffee.Democratic presidential candidate (候选人) Hillary Clinton jokingly promised on a talk show that if she was elected president, she would give everyone a cupcake on her birthday.Ruth Reichl, editor-in-chief (主编) of Gourmet magazine, explains that the rise of the cupcake is very much about going back to American national identity (认同感) in food, which is all about comfort. “People want to think about when they and their country were innocent (纯真的),” she said.高中年级英语课外阅读文章(二)Mourinho: I'm still the special oneUPON landing in the English Premier League (英超) three years ago, Jose Mourinho declared (宣称) he was the special one. “Please don’t call me arrogant (傲慢的), but I’m European champion and I think I’m a special one.”He was definitely different from other managers. Never before had a football manager entertained the world both on and off the pitch (球场). The 44-year-old Portuguese manager is arrogant, witty and brilliant, but never dull. Two league titles in two seasons suggested he was indeed special. Under Mourinho, Chelsea never lost a Premier League match at their home stadium, Stamford Bridge. But despite these achievements, Mourinho’s relationship with the club’s owner Roman Abramovich become fractured (破裂) beyond repair.Abramovich decided to buy players like Andri Shevchenko and Michael Ballack. But Mourinho did not always play them.Abramovich wanted Chelsea to play an aggressive, attacking style of football, but Mourinho also refused. When Mourinho found his authority was being weakened, he walked away.Off the pitch, Mourinho was arrested (逮捕) after an angryquarrel with police officers about his dog. But he was also the manager who would run off from an interview to open the door for an elderly woman who was struggling with it.Mourinho was born into a family with football tradition. Despite an academic record that could have opened many other doors, he never considered a career outside of football. When it became clear he didn’t have enough talent to be a great player, he began working towards a career in coaching. And he has built a great one.“I think I’m still special. I achieved good things and it was a fantastic period in my career. I’ll try to forget the bad things and remember the good ones,” he said.。

They are tall and slim(苗条的) and carry long spears to guard their cattle against an attacking lion or leopard(豹). These Africans move from place to place on the rolling(绵延起伏的) grasslands looking for suitable grazing(牧场) and water. Mboto is twelve years old. He helps his father drive the cattle. If the family decides to remain in one spot for a while, he helps gather sticks and thin branches to build a simple house. The sticks are placed in the ground in a circle. Sound travels at the rate of about one-fifth of a mile per second. If the hill is eleven hundred feet away, it takes two seconds for the sound to travel to the hill and back. Thus, by timing the interval between a sound and its reflection, you can estimate the distance to an obstruction.During World War II the British used a practical application(应用) of this law to detect German planes on their way to bomb London long before the enemy was near the target. They used radio waves instead of sound waves, since radio waves can make a way through fog and clouds. The outnumbered Royal Air Force always seemed to the puzzled Germans to be surprised. It was radio echoes(回声) more that anything else that won the Battle of Britain.Since the radio waves were used to tell the direction in which to send the RAF planes and the distance to send them(their line of flight, in other words), the device was called radio direction and ranging, and from the initials the word radar was invented.1. 高中英语美文阅读:品尝现在Relish the Moment 品尝现在Tucked away in our subconsciousness is an idyllic vision. We see ourselves on a long trip that spans the moment. We are traveling by train. Out the windows, we drink in the passing scene of cars on nearby highways, of children waving at a crossing, of cattle grazing on a distant hillside, of smoke pouring from a power plant, of row upon row of corn ad wheat, of flatlands and valleys, of mountains and rolling hillsides, of city skylines and village halls. But uppermost in our minds is the final destination. On a certain day at a certain hour, we will pull into the station. Bands will be playing and flags waving. Once we get there, so many wonderful dreams will come true and the pieces of our lives will fit together like a completed jigsaw puzzle. How restlessly we pace the aisles, damning the minutes for loitering---waiting, waiting, waiting for the station.“When we reach the station, that will be it!” we cry. “WhenI’m 18.” “When I buy a new 450SL Mercedes Benz!” “When I put the last kid through coll ege.” “When I have paid off the mortgage!” “When I get a promotion.” “When I reach the age of retirement, I shall live happily ever after!”Sooner or later, we must realize there is no station, no one place to arrive at once and for all. The true joy of life is the trip. The station is only a dream. It constantly outdistances us.It isn’t the burdens of today that drive men mad. It is the regrets over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow. Regret and fear are twin thieves who rob us of today. So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, climb more mountains, eat more ice cream, go barefoot more often, swim more rivers, watch more sunsets, laugh more, cry less. Life must be lived as we go along. The station will come soon enough. Like most people, I was brought up to look upon life as a process of getting. It was not until in my late thirties that I made this important discovery: giving-away makes life so much more exciting. You need not worry if you lack money. This is how I experimentedwith giving-away. If an idea for improving the window display of a neighborhood store flashes to me, I step in and make the suggestion to the storekeeper. One discovery I made about giving-away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpected form. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a year later I needed a post-office box for a new business I was starting. I was told at the window that there were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list. As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard our conversation. “Wasn’t it you that wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home?” I said yes. “Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one for yo u. You don’t know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaints.”像大多数人,我长大看待生命是一个过程获得。

Teens talked to the 21-year-old.Teens: You have come to China to shoot a video about the Beijing Olympics. Can you talk more about the video?Amy: It was an exciting experience. Second, have faith in yourself. 2012高考英语课外阅读材料【每两天一篇—阅读+单词学习】Unit One: How to Improve Your Study HabitsTEXTWant to know how to improve your grades without having to spend more time studying? Sounds too good to be true? Well, read on...How to Improve Your Study HabitsPerhaps you are an average student with average intelligence. You do well enough in school, but you probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily the case, however. You can receive better grades if you want to. Yes, even students of average intelligence can be top students without additional work. Here's how:1. Plan your time carefully. Make a list of your weekly tasks. Then make a schedule or chart of your time. Fill in committed time such as eating, sleeping, meetings, classes, etc. Then decide on good, regular times for studying. Be sure to set aside enough time to complete your normal reading and work assignments. Of course, studying shouldn't occupy all of the free time on the schedule. It's important to set aside time for relaxation, hobbies, and entertainment as well. This weekly schedule may not solve all of your problems, but it will make you more aware of how you spend your time. Furthermore, it will enable you to plan your activities so that you have adequate time for both work and play.2. Find a good place to study. Choose one place for your study area. It may be a desk or a chair at home or in the school library, but it should be comfortable, and it should not have distractions. When you begin to work, you should be able to concentrate on the subject.3. Skim before you read. This means looking over a passage quickly before you begin to read it more carefully. As you preview the material, you get some idea of the content and how it is organized. Later when you begin to read you will recognize less important material and you may skip some of these portions. Skimming helps double your reading speed and improves your comprehension as well.4. Make good use of your time in class. Listening to what the teacher says in class means less work later. Sit where you can see and hear well. Take notes to help you remember what the teacher says.5. Study regularly. Go over your notes as soon as youcan after class. Review important points mentioned in class as well as points you remain confused about. Read about these points in your textbook. If you know what the teacher will discuss the next day, skim and read that material too. This will help you understand the next class. If you review your notes and textbook regularly, the material will become more meaningful and you will remember it longer. Regular review leads to improved performance on test.6. Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose ofa test is to show what you have learned about a subject. The world won't end if you don't pass a test, so don't worry excessively about a single test. Tests provide grades, but they also let you know what you need to spend more time studying, and they help make your knowledge permanent. There are other techniques that might help you with your studying. Only a few have been mentioned here. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these. Talk with your classmates about their study techniques. Share with them some of the techniques you have found to be helpful. Improving your study habits will improve your grades.NEW WORDSaverage n. ordinary 普通的;中等的intelligence n. ability to learn and understand 智力necessarily ad. inevitably 必定case n. what has really happened; actual condition 实情additional a. added 附加的,额外的 n. addition weekly a. done or happening every week 每周的;一周一次的schedule n. timetable 时间表chart n. This is the story of that adventure.Sailing Round the WorldBefore he sailed round the world single-handed, Francis Chichester had already surprised his friends several times. He had tried to fly round the world but failed. That was in 1931.The years passed. He gave up flying and began sailing. He enjoyed it greatly. Chichester was already 58 years old when he won the first solo transatlantic sailing race. His old dream of going round the world came back, but this time he would sail. His friends and doctors did not think he could do it, as he had lung cancer. But Chichester was determined to carry out his plan. In August, 1963, at the age of nearly sixty-five, an age when many men retire, he began the greatest voyage of his life. Soon, he was away in this new 16-metre boat, Gipsy Moth.Chichester followed the route of the great nineteenth century clipper ships. But the clippers had had plenty of crew. Chicheater did it all by himself, even after the main steering device had been damaged by gales. Chichester covered 14, 100 miles before stopping in Sydney, Australia. This was more than twice the distance anyone had previously sailed alone. He arrived in Australia on 12 December, just 107 days out from England. He received a warm welcome from the Australians and from his family who had flown there to meet him. On shore, Chichester could not walk without help. Everybody said the same thing: he had done enough; he must not go any further. But he did not listen. After resting in Sydney for a few weeks, Chichester set off once more in spite of his friends' attempts to dissuade him. The second half of his voyage was by far the more dangerous part, during which he sailed round the treacherous Cape Horn.On 29 January he left Australia. The next night, the blackest he had ever known, the sea became so rough that the boat almost turned over. Food, clothes, and broken glass were all mixed together. Fortunately, bed and went to sleep. When he woke up, the sea had become calm the nearest person he could contact by radio, unless there was a ship nearby, Wild be on an island 885 miles away. After succeeding in sailing round Cape Horn, Chichester sent the following radio message to London:" I feel as if I had wakened from a nightmare. Wild horses could not drag me down to Cape Horn and that sinister Southern Ocean again."Just before 9 o'clock on Sunday evening 28 May, 1967, he arrived back in England, where a quarter of a million people were waiting to welcome him. Queen Elizabeth II knighted him with the very sword that Queen Elizabeth I had sailed round the world for the first time. The whole voyagefrom England and back had covered 28, 500 miles. It had taken him nine months , of which the sailing time was 226 days. He had done what he wanted to accomplish.Like many other adventurers, Chichester had experienced fear and conquered it. In doing so, he had undoubtedly learnt something about himself. Moreover, in the modern age when human beings depend so much on machines, he had given men throughout the world new pride.NEW WORDSsingle-handed a & ad. Everyone was so kind to the old lady on her birthday. Surely her daughter would make an even bigger effort to please he?The PresentIt was the old lady's birthday. She got up early to be ready for the post. From the second floor flat she could see the postman when he came down the street, and the little boy from the ground floor brought up her letters on the rare occasions when anything came.Today she was sure the would be something. Myra wouldn't forget her mother's birthday, even if she seldom wrote at other times. Of course Myra was busy. Her husband had been made Mayor, and Myra herself had got a medal for her work the aged. The old lady was proud of Myra, but Enid was the daughter she loved. Enid had never married, but had seemed content to live with her mother, and teach in a primary school round the corner. One evening, however, Enid said, "I've arranged for Mrs. Morrison to look after you for a few days, Mother. Tomorrow I have to go into hospital--just a minor operation, I'll soon be home."In the morning she went, but never came back--she died on the operating table. Myra came to the funeral, and in her efficient way arranged for Mrs. Morrison to come in and light the fire and give the old lady her breakfast. Two years ago that was, and since then Myra had been to see her mother three times, but her husband never. The old lady was eight today. She had put on her best dress. Perhaps--perhaps Myra might come. After all, eighty was a special birthday, another decade lined or endured just as you chose to look at it.Even if Myra did not come, she would send a present. The old lady was sure of that. Two spots of colour brightened her cheeks. She was excited--like a child. She would enjoy her day.Yesterday Mrs. Morrison had given the flat an extra clean, and today she had brought a card anda bunch of marigolds when she came to do the breakfast. Mrs. Grant downstairs had made a cake, and in the afternoon she was going down there to tea. The little boy, Johnnie, had been up with a packet of mints, and said he wouldn't go out to play until the post had come."I guess you'll get lots and lots of presents," he said, "I did last were when I was six."What would she like? A pair of slippers perhaps. Or a new cardigan. A cardigan would be lovely. Blue's such a pretty colour. Jim had always liked her in blue. Or a table lamp. Or a book, a travel book, with pictures, or a little clock, with clear black numbers. So many lovely things. She stood by the window, watching. The postman turned round the corner on his bicycle. Her heart beat fast. Johnnie had seen him too and ran to the gate. Then clatter, clatter up the stairs. Johnnie knocked at her door."Granny, granny," he shouted, "I've got your post."He gave her four envelopes. Three were unsealed cards from old friends. The fourth was sealed, in Myra's writing. The old lady felt a pang of disappointment."No parcel, Johnnie?""No, granny."Maybe the parcel was too large to come by letter post. That was it. It would come later by parcel post. She must be patient.Almost reluctantly she tore the envelope open. Folded in the card was a piece of paper. Written on the card was a message under the printed Happy Birthday -- Buy yourself something nice with the cheque, Myra and Harold. The cheque fluttered to the floor like a bird with a broken wing. Slowly the old lady stooped to pick it up. Her present, her lovely present. Certainly, there are many worthwhile programs on television, including news, educational programs for children, programs on current social problems, plays, movies, concerts, and so on. Nevertheless, perhaps people should not be spending so much of their time in front of the TV. Mr Mayer imagines what we might do if we were forced to find other activities.Turning off TV: a Quiet HourI would like to propose that for sixty to ninety minutes each evening, right after the early evening news, all television broadcasting in the United States be prohibited by law.Let us take a serious, reasonable look at what the results be if such a proposal were accepted. Families might use the time for a real family hour. Without the distraction of TV, they might sit around together after dinner and actually talk to one another. It is well known that many of ourproblems -- everything, in fact, from the generation gap to the high divorce rate to some forms of mental illness -- are caused at least in part by failure to communicate. We do not tell each other what is disturbing us. The result is emotional difficulty of one kind or another. By using the quiet family hour to discuss our problems, we might get to know each other better, and to like each other better. On evenings when such talk is unnecessary, families could rediscover more active pastimes. Freed from TV, forced to find their own activities, they might take a ride together to watch the sunset. Or they might take a walk together (remember feet?) and see the neighborhood with fresh, new eyes. With free time and no TV, children and adults might rediscover reading. There is more entertainment in a good book than in a month of typical TV programming. Educators report that the generation growing up with television can barely write an English sentence, even at the college level. Writing is often learned from reading. A more literate new generation could be a product of the quiet hour.A different form of reading might also be done, as it was in the past: reading aloud. Few pastimes bring a family closer together than gathering around and listening to mother or father read a good story. The quiet hour could become the story hour. When the quiet hour ends, the TV networks might even be forced to come up with better shows in order to get us back from our newly discovered activities. At first glance, the idea of an hour without TV seems radical. What will parents do without the electronic baby-sitter? How will we spend the time? But it is not radical at all. It has been only twenty-five years since television came to control American free time. Those of us thirty-five and older can remember childhoods without television, spent partly with radio -- which at least involved the listener's imagination -- but also with reading, learning, talking, playing games, inventing new activities. It wasn't that difficult. Honest. The truth is we had a ball.NEW WORDSworthwhile a. good enough for the time or effort needed; valuable 值得花时间(或精力)的;有价值的program (me) n. performance on radio or television 节目educational a. of or for education; providing education or information 教育的;有教育意义的current a. of the present time 当前的social a. of or in society 社会的movie n. film that one sees at a cinema 电影nevertheless conj. but; however 然而,不过propose vt. suggest 建议broadcasting n. the action of sending out sound (or images) by radio (or television) 广播prohibit v & n. forbid by law 禁止proposal vt. suggestion 提议,建议actually n. in actual fact, really 实际上generation n. all the people about the same age (一)代gap n. an empty space between two things or two parts of a thing; a wide difference of opinion, character, or the like 缺口,间隙;分歧,隔阂divorce n. end of a marriage by law 离婚rate n. 率mental a. of the mind 精神的;思想上的communicate vi. share or exchange opinions, ideas, etc. 交流意见,思想等disturb vt. make (sb.) worried 使烦恼emotional a. 感情的pastime n. anything done to pass time pleasantly 消遣,娱乐sunset n. the going down of the sun; the time when the sun goes down日落(时分)neighborhood n. the area around a point or place 邻近地区;地段adult n. 成年人typical a. 典型的educator n. a person whose profession is education 教育家barely ad. hardly 仅仅,勉强;几乎没有literate a. able to read and write 能读写的;有文化的product n. sth. made or grown 产品network n. 广播(或电视)联播公司;广播(或电视)网glance n. quick look 一瞥;扫视radical a. extreme; very different 激进的electronic a. 电子的electron n.baby-sitter n. someone who looks after a child when the parents are away for a short time (代人临时)照看婴儿childhood n. time when one is a child 童年partly ad. not completely; in some degree 部分地;在一定程度上involve vt. have as a part or result (必须)包括imagination n. the ability to imagine 想像力learning n. the gaining of knowledge or skill through studying; knowledge or skill gained through studying 学习;学问,知识invent vt. produce (sth.) for the first time 发明PHRASES & EXPRESSIONSgeneration gap failure of the younger and older generations to communicate and understand one another 代沟in part in some degree; partly 在一定程度上;部分地grow up change from a child to a man or a woman 成长,长大bring together cause to meet 使相聚come up with think of; produce 想出;提出at first glance when first seen or thought about乍一看;最初考虑时have a ball (sl.) enjoy oneself, have a very good time 玩得开心PROPER NAMESMayer迈耶(姓氏)the United States 美国Unit Five: A Miserable,Merry ChristmasTEXTA miserable and merry Christmas? How could it be?A Miserable, Merry ChristmasChristmas was coming. I wanted a pony. To make sure that my parents understood, I declared that I wanted noting else."Nothing but a pony?" my father asked."Nothing," I said."Not even a pair of high boots?"That was hard. I did want boots, but I stuck to the pony. "No, not even boots.""Nor candy? There ought to be something to fill your stocking with, and Santa Claus can't put a pony into a stocking,"That was true, and he couldn't lead a pony down the chimney either . But no. "All I want is a pony,"I said. "If I can't have a pony, give me nothing, nothing."On Christmas Eve I hung up my stocking along with my sisters. The next morning my sisters and I woke up at six. Then we raced downstairs to the fireplace. And there they were, the gifts, all sorts of wonderful things, mixed-up piles of presents. Only my stocking was empty; it hung limp; not a thing in it; and under and around it -- nothing. My sisters had knelt down, each by her pile of gifts; they were crying with delight, till they looked up and saw me standing there looking so miserable. They came over to me and felt my stocking: nothing.I don't remember whether I cried at that moment, but my sisters did. They ran with me back to my bed, and there we all cried till I became indignant. That helped some. I got up, dressed, and driving my sisters away, I went out alone into the stable, and there, all by myself, I wept. My mother came out to me and she tried to comfort me. But I wanted no comfort. She left me and went on into the house with sharp words for my father. My sisters came to me, and I was rude. I ran away from them. I went around to the front of the house, sat down on the steps, and, the crying over, I ached. I was wronged, I was hurt. And my father must have been hurt, too, a little. I saw him looking out of the window. He was watching me or something for an hour or two, drawing back the curtain so little lest I catch him, but I saw his face, and I think I can see now the anxiety upon on it, the worried impatience. After an hour or two, I caught sight of a man riding a pony down the street, a pony and a brand-new saddle; the most beautiful saddle I ever saw, and it was a boy's saddle. And the pony! As he drew near, I saw that the pony was really a small horse, with a black mane and tail, and one white foot and a white star on his forehead. For such a horse as that I would have given anything. But the man came along, reading the numbers on the houses, and, as my hopes -- my impossible hopes -- rose, he looked at our door and passed by, he and the pony, and the saddle. Too much, I fell upon the steps and broke into tears. Suddenly I heard a voice."Say, kid," it said, "do you know a boy named Lennie Steffens?"I looked up. It was the man on the pony, back again."Yes," I spluttered through my tears. "That's me.""Well," he said, "then this is your horse. I've been looking all over for you and your house. Why don't you put your number where it can be seen?""Get down," I said, running out to him. I wanted to ride.He went on saying something about "ought to have got here at seven o'clock, but--"I hardly heard, I could scarcely wait. I was so happy, so thrilled. I rode off up the street. Such a beautiful pony. And mine! After a while I turned and trotted back to the stable. There was the family, father, mother, sisters, all working for me, all happy. They had been putting in place the tools of my new business: currycomb, brush, pitchfork -- everything, and there was hay in the loft. But that Christmas, which my father had planned so carefully, was it the best or the worst I ever knew? He often asked me that; I never could answer as a boy. I think now that it was both. It covered the whole distance from broken-hearted misery to bursting happiness -- too fast, A grown-up could hardly have stood it.NEW WORDSmiserable a. causing unhappiness; very unhappy 悲惨的merry a. cheerful, full of lively happiness, fun, etc. 欢乐的,愉快的pony n. a small horse 矮种马;小马boot n. 长统靴candy n.
