Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes、To some extent our intelligence is given us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence .On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings、Thus the limits of a person’s intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment、This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with、The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence、Thus if we take two unrelated people at random(随机地) from the population, it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be completely different、If, on the other hand, we take two identical twins, they will very likely be as intelligent aseach other、Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birthImagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments、We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring、We would soon find differences in intelligence developing and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part、This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.1、The writer is in favor of the view that man’s intelligence is given to him( )A、at birthB、through educationC、both at birth and through educationD、by his experience 2、If a child is born with low intelligence, he can( )A、never become a genius without proper trainingB、still become a genius if given special educationC、become more intelligent if trained in rich surroundingsD、never get more intelligent all his life3、Which pair of the following people, according to the author, is most likely to have similar degree of intelligence( )A、Two children of the same parentsB、Husband and wifeC、Two close friends in the same neighborhoodD、Two room-mates in the same neighborhood4、The example of the twins going to university and to a factory separately shows( )A、the important role of their intelligenceB、the role environment plays in intelligence developmentC、the importance of their social positionsD、the part that birth pays in intelligence development5、The best title of this passage might be( )A、Who Are More IntelligentB、Education and EnvironmentC、Dependence on EnvironmentD、What Determines Intelligence2、The human body has developed its millions of nerves to be highly aware of what goes on both inside and outside of itThis helps us adjust to the outside world、Without our nerves and our brain, which is a system of nerves, we couldn’t know what’s happening、But we pay for our sensitivity、We can feel pain when the slightest thing is wrong with any part of our body、The history of torture ( 折磨 ) is based on the human body being open to painBut there is a way to handle pain、Look at the Indian fakir ( 苦行僧) who sits on a bed of nails、Fakirs can put a needle fight through an arm, and feel no pain、This ability that some humans have developed to handle pain should give us ideas about how the mind can deal with painThe big thing in withstanding pain is our attitude toward it、If the dentist says, "This will hurt a little," it helps us to accept the pain、By staying relaxed, and by treating the pain as an interesting sensation ( 感觉 ), we can handle the pain without falling apart、After all, althoughpain is an unpleasant sensation, it is still a sensation, and sensations are the stuff of life6、The human body has developed a system of nerves that enables us to( )A、stay relaxedB、avoid painC、stand tortureD、feel pain7、What does the writer mean by saying "we pay for our sensitivity" in the first paragraph?( )A、We have to take care of our sense of painB、We suffer from our sense of feelingC、We Identify theparagraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraphmore than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. Answer the questions bymarking the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2.9 Highly Effective Study Habits(A) Students grapple with many issues in their lives, and because of all of the competing things for your attention, it’s hard to concentrate on studying. And yet if you’re in school, you have to do at least a little studying in order to progress from year to year. The key to effective studying isn’t cramming or studying longer, but studying smarter. You can begin studying smarter with these nine proven and effective study habits.1. How you approach studying matters(B) Too many people look at studying as a necessary task, not an enjoyment or opportunity to learn. That’s fine, but researchers have found that how you approach something matters almost as much as what you do. Being in the right mindset is important in order to study smarter.(C) Sometimes you can’t “force” yourself to be in the right mindset, and it is during such times you should simply avoid studying. If you’re distracted by a relationship issue, an upcoming game, or finishing an important project, then studying is just going to be an exercise in frustration. Come back to it when you’re not focused (or obsessed!) by something else going on in your life.2. Where you study is important(D) A lot of people make the mistake of studying in a place that really isn’t conducive to concentrating. A place with a lot of distractions makes for a poor study area. If you try and study in your dorm room, for instance, you may find the computer, TV, or a roommate more interesting than the reading material you’re trying to digest.(E) The library, a corner in a student lounge or study hall are good places to check out. Make sure to choose the quiet areas in these places, not the loud, central gathering areas. Investigate multiple places on-campus and off-campus, don’t just pick the first one your find as “good enough” for your needs and habits. Finding an ideal study place is important, because it’s one you can reliably count on for the next few years.3. Bring everything you need, nothing you don’t(F) Unfortunately, when you find an ideal place to study, sometimes people bring things they don’t need. For instance, while it may seem ideal to type notes into a computer to refer back to later, computers are a powerful distraction for many people because they can do so manydifferent things. Playing games, going online, surfing the Web, and answering emails are all wonderful distractions that have nothing to do with studying. So ask yourself whether you really need a computer to take notes, or whether you can make do with the old-fashioned paper and pen or pencil.(G) Don’t forget the things you need to study for the class, exam or paper you’re focusing on for the study session. Nothing is more time-consuming and wasteful than having to run back and forth regularly because you forget an important book, paper, or some other resource you need to be successful.4. Outline and rewrite your notes(H) Most people find that keeping to a standard outline format helps them boil information down to its most basic components. People find that connecting similar concepts together makes it easier to remember when the exam comes around. The important thing to remember in writing outlines is that an outline only words as a learning tool when it is in your own words and structure. Every person is unique in how they put similar information together (called “chunking” by cognitive psychologists). So while you’re welcomed to copy other people’s notes or outlines, make sure you translate those notes and outlines into your own words and concepts. Failing to do this is what often causes many students to stumble in remembering important items.5. Practice by yourself or with friends(I) The old saying, practice makes perfect, is true. You can practice by yourself by testing yourself with either practice exams, past quizzes, or flash cards (depending what kind of course it is and what’s available). If a practice exam isn’t available, you can make one up for yourself and your classmates (or find someone who will). If a practice or old exam from a course is available, use it as a guide – do not study to the practice or old exam! (Too many students treat such exams as the real exams, only to be disappointed when the real exam has none of the same questions). Such exams help you understand the breadth of content and types of questions to expect, not the actual material to study for.6. Make a schedule you can stick to(J) Too many people treat studying as the thing to do when you get around to it or have some spare time. But if you schedule study time just as your class time is scheduled, you’ll find it becomes much less of a hassle in the long run. Instead of last-minute cramming sessions, you’ll be better prepared because you haven’t put off all the studying into one 12-hour marathon. Spending 30 or 60 minutes every day you have a class studying for that class before or after is a lot easier and will allow you to actually learn more of the material.7. Take breaks (and rewards!)(K) Because so many people view studying as a chore or task, it’s human nature to avoid it. If, however, you find rewards to help reinforce what you’re doing, you may be pleasantly surprised by the change you may find in your attitude over time. Rewards start by chunking study time into manageable components. Studying for 4 hours at a time with no breaks is not realistic or fun for most people. Studying for 1 hour, and then taking a 5-minute break and grabbing a snack is usually more sustainable and enjoyable. Divide study time into segments that make sense and work for you. If you have to digest a whole textbook chapter, find sections in the chapter and commit to reading and taking notes on one section at a time. Maybe you only do one section in a sitting, maybe you do two. Find the limits that seem to work for you.8. Keep healthy and balanced(L) It’s hard to live a balanced life while in school, I know. But the more balance you seek out in your life, the easier every component in your life becomes. If you spend all of your time focusing on a relationship or a game, you can see how easy it is to be out of balance. When you’re out of balance, the things you’re not focusing on – such as studying – become that much harder. Don’t spend all of your time studying – have friends, keep in touch with your family, and find interests outside of school that you can pursue and enjoy.9. Know what the expectations are for the class(M) Different professors and teachers have different expectations from their students. While taking good notes and listening in class (and attending as many of the classes as you can) aregood starts, you can do one better by spending some time with the instructor or professor’s assistant. Talking to the instructor early on – especially if you foresee a difficult course ahead – will help you understand the course requirements and the professor’s expectations. If you get a particularly bad grade on a paper or exam, talk to the instructor. Try and understand where things went wrong, and what you can do in the future to help reduce it from happening again.Don’t forget to learn!(N) Studying isn’t just about passing an exam, as most students look at it as. Studying is an effort to actually learn things, some of which you might actually care about. So while you’ll have to take your share of classes that have little or nothing to do with your interests, you should still look for interesting things to take away from every experience.35. ____There are always interesting things to be found in what you learn.36.____You should space your work out over shorter periods of time and not try not try to cramall of your studying into just one or two sessions.37.____Past test papers are only useful in that they give you a general idea of the subject areasto focus on and help you identify the style of the questions.38.____It is important to know what the professors will be expecting of you when you sign upfor their courses.39.____Studying can be a problem when you aren't in the mood for it.40.____Only bring the necessary study tools with you when you go to your ideal study place.41.____Notes are only useful and helpful when they are written using your own words andconcepts.42.____Finding a positive study environment is very important.43.____In order to study efficiently, you have to have the right attitude.44.____Information reviewed amid distractions is less likely to be remembered.Section B Blank Filling (10%)Directions: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. I am not talking only about the times when you see her at school. She often has a book with her when she is shopping , riding in the car , going to see relatives, or doing just about anything where there might be an opportunity ( 机会) to read . Now , you might think Sally is a bookworm (书呆子) , but that would not be accurate because she also enjoys spending a lot of time with her friends and doing lots of different things . Very simply put , books are one of Sally’s main hobbies .People practice their hobbies in many different ways .Some people like to collect stamps , others like to listen to music or go to the movies , and still others like to travel and visit new places . Sally likes to read books --- many different kinds of books. When she finds a good book in the library , she usually borrows it to investigate (研究) more deeply . She also likes to go to a large bookstore near her home, where she can see all kinds of new books and sometimes buy one that she likes.Sally’s love of books has made it a lot easier for her to do well in school because, after all, you do have to read a lot of books in your classes. When Sally gets an assignment and has to read a chapter, it almost seems like she is practicing her hobby . The books she uses in her classes are written very clearly and are really quite interesting. The only different thing is that sometimes she has to do a written exercise for homework. To Sally that seems like a small price to pay for the opportunity to read another book about something new and interesting. As Sally has read so many books and learned so many new words, she usually only has to do an assigned reading once because she understands just about everything the first time through.1.What is Sally usually doing when you see her?A)She is shopping.B)She is riding in a car.C)She is carrying a book under her arm.D)She is reading in a classroom.2.Why is it not accurate to say that Sally is a bookworm?A)Because reading is just one of her hobbies.B)Because she practices her hobbies in very simple ways.C)Because books make her look like a student.D)Because she does everything better than other people.3.The writer talks about people’s different hobbies in the second paragraph in order to tellus________.A)how many hobbies there might be among different peopleB)that reading is something that everybody likes to doC)why Sally likes reading more than other hobbiesD)that reading is a healthier hobby than other hobbies4.Sally finds it easier for her to do well in school because __________.A)through reading she has learnt a lot alreadyB)the books she uses in her classes are interestingC)once she finishes a book , she never reads it againD)she pays a small price for the opportunity to read her books5. What does Sally not like to do according to the third paragraph?A) Fast reading. B) Reading assignments.C) Chapter questions. D) Written exercises.Task 2 (10%)Directions: Reading the following passages and choose the best answer for each of the questions. No matter how you look on paper, no matter how well you present yourself, no matter how well you answer their questions, you will not get the job unless you make a personal connection with the interviewer. I need to know from the very start that you are someone I can trust to represent my company and me. How do you establish that trust? Simple. At the very beginning of the interview, when the introductions are being made, concentrate on looking directly and solidly into the interviewers’ eyes, giving them your sweetest and most endearing smile. Establish that personal connection both physically and mentally with the interviewer. How do you know when the connection is made? When they return your smile in a comfortable, relaxed manner, you are connected and ready to communicate on a personal level. Remember, I only hire people I am comfortable with. If the connection is not made, I won’t hire. So take the time t o establish that personal connection.6. Unfortunately, only very few can hope to become famous. Talent is not enough, because show business is as competitive as any other business. Without a good manager, a performer can never hope to succeed. Fashion is important in his business, too. The best tailor in the world will never be a success if he makes old-fashioned clothes. In exactly the same way, a performer must change his “act” in order to follow the taste of the moment. This is true for actors, dancers and comedians, but perhaps most of all for singers.“Pop” stands for “ popular”, and a pop singer has to work very hard to become popular. He must either give the public what they already want, or he must find a new way of singing that will attract their attention. Even when he has succeeded, and his records are sold everywhere, he cannot relax. Then he must work harder than ever to remain popular, because there are always younger singers trying to become famous and to steal some of the popularity. The life of a successful pop singer is not at all easy. He can only relax when he is alone, becauseeverything he does is watched and reported in the special newspaper written for the“fans”. The fans are the most important people in the world for the singer. They buy his records, they go to his concerts, and they make him rich and famous. But they can be very annoying, too. Sometimes they get so crazy that they do anything to get a “souvenir”. They steal handkerchiefs, they tear off buttons, and they even cut off pieces of the unfortunate singer’s hair. Many singers have been forced to hide, and some who have not been so lucky as to escape have been stripped practically naked by their fans. A pop singer has to spend a lot of money on clothes, because he must always look smart, or, at any rate, different. He must have a luxurious car. And most important he must always keep smiling for the benefit of his public.11. How many of the young can hope to become famous?A) Nobody. B) Only very few.C) The majority of them. D) All of them.12. Which of the following is the key element to become a successful performer?A) The age. B) Education background.C) A wealthy family. D) A good manager.13. Why must a pop singer work harder when he has become famous?A) To sell more records. B) To follow the taste of the moment.C) To stay popular. D) To attract the public’s attention.14. It may be inferred from this passage that_______ .A) a pop singer is afraid of meeting his fansB) some people become pop singers by chanceC) a pop singer sometimes is unwilling to meet peopleD) pop singers have to smile all the time15. A suitable title for this passage might be_______ .A) “The Entertainment Profession” B) “How to Become a Pop Singer”C) “A Pop Singer’s Life” D) “The Pop Singer”Task 4 (10%)Directions: Reading the following passages and choose the best answer for each of the questions.Dear Sir or Madam,The ABC Company was established in 2006 and in four short years has become one of the most successful companies in the market place. 《大学英语》试卷及答案(共三套)

《大学英语》(A卷)Part I Reading Comprehension(30%)Directions:Choose the best answers according to the passage.Passage1Advertising can be thought of“as the means of making known in order to buy or sell goods or services”.Advertising aims to increase people’s awareness and arouse interest. It tries to inform and to persuade. The media are all used to spread the message, and the press offers a fairly cheap method.Magazines are used to reach special sections of the market. The cinema and commercial radio are useful for local markets.Television, although more expensive, can be very effective.Posters are fairly cheap and more permanent in their power of attraction.Other ways of increasing consumer interest are through exhibitions and trade fairs as well as direct mail advertising. We might ask whether the cost of advertising is paid for by the manufacturer or by the consumer.Since advertising forms partof the cost of production, which has to be covered by the selling price,it is clear that it is the customer who pays for advertising. However,if large scale advertising leads to increased demand, production costs are reduced, and the customer pays less.It is difficult to measure exactly the influence of advertising on sales. When the market is growing, advertising helps to increase demand. When the market is shrinking, advertising may prevent a bigger fall in scales than would occur without its support. What is clear is that businesses would not pay large sums for advertising if they were not convinced of its value to them.1、Advertising is often used to______.A)convince customers B)promote productionC)raise interest D)push the sales2、According to the passage, trade fair(Paragraph1)may_______.A)replace exhibitions and markets B)supply local goods and servicesC)attract possible customers D)provide cheap amusements3、Advertising is in the main paid for by______.A)the customer B)the producerC)the increased sales D)the decreased costs4、The author says that advertising can increase demand_______.A)in any period of sales B)in any circumstancesC)in a growing market D)in a shrinking market5、What the last sentence of this passage actually tells us is that______.A)businessmen usually do not pay more for advertising than they have toB)businessmen know well that advertising could bring them more profitsC)advertising couldn’t convince people of the value of the goodsD)advertising usually costs businessmen, large amounts of moneyPassage2Few Americans remain in one position or one place for a lifetime. We move from town to city to suburb, from high school to college in a different state, form a job in one region to a better job elsewhere, from the home where we raise our children to the home where we plan to live in retirement. With each move we are forever making new friends, who become part of our new life at that time. For many of us summer is a special time for forming new friendships.Today millions of Americans vacation abroad, and they go not only to see new sights but also with the hope of meeting new people. No one really expects a vacation trip to produce a close friend, but the beginning of a friendship is possible. The word“friend”can be applied to a wide range of relationships—to someone one has known for a few weeks in a new place, to a fellow worker,to a childhood playmate,to a man or woman,to a trusted confidant(知已)。

The ducks however at this time were ugly, and bulky(笨重的) and just frantically(狂乱的) kicked their short legs to swim. The swans wouldn't let the ducks swim with them, which angered the ducks since they too lived at that pond. One day while the swans and ducks were arguing about which group would swim first a flock of geese came over as they were passing by to see what all the fuss was about. They listened, and found that the swans were vain and thought that since they were prettier, so they should use the pond first. They also found that the ducks thought that they should use it because the last time the swans refused to let them have their turn.Thena goose said that they should share the pond since it was rather large. The swans unsurprisingly got mad at this so a fight broke out. The ducks were pulling at the swans’ feet, and the geese were honking and biting the swans necks, and pulled as hard as they could. About an hour later the fight had ended. The ducks and geese stood there looking humorously at the swans. They had stretched the swans’ necks out so far that they couldn't hold their heads up. Ducks became more beautiful than swans.Passage ThreeThere are many ways to learn about people of other lands. One way is to study the clothing other people wear. For thousands of years, people in different parts of the world have worn very different types of clothing. There are four big reasons for this. One reason might be religion. In many Moslem countries, women must wear veils(面纱)t o hide their faces. The veils must be worn in public. Veils are part of the Moslem religion. The second reason is that different materials are used in different countries. For instance, in France the materials used in clothing may be cotton, silk, wool, or many other man-made materials. Most people in China wear cotton. The ways clothes are made are also very different. This is another reason why people dress differently. Western countries rely on machines to make most of their clothing. Someone living in India can use only hand power to make the clothing he needs.World-wide differences in customs also lead to differences in clothing. A Mexican farmer wears a straw hat with a brim(帽沿)up. In China, a farmer wears a straw hat with a brim down. Both hats are used to protect the farmers from the sun. Some of these customs have come down through thousands of years.11. If you want to learn about the differences about people in the world, you_____.A. should know the ways to study other landsB. should know the four big reasons given in the passageC. may study the different types of clothing people wearD. may be surprised by the ways people wear《大学英语1》A卷第 2 页,共 4 页系 专业班级 学号 姓名…………………………密…………………………封………………………线…………………………《大学英语1》A 卷 第 3 页,共 4 页《大学英语1》A卷第 4 页,共 4 页。

Reading ComprehensionDirections: After reading the following passages, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statement. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C or D. You should make the correct choice.Passage OneJust as exercise strengthens the heart and lungs, bones and muscles, it may also power up the brain. A succession of scientific studies of animals implies that physical activity has a positive effect on mental functioning.“It’s clear that the brain benefits from exercise,” says scientist William Greenough of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His studies with rats have demonstrated two primary effects of activity: vigorous physical exercise provides the brain with more fuel, and skill-based exercise increases the formation of connections in the brain, which, according to the proposals of some scientists, may make the brain better able to process information. In one experiment, laboratory rats were separated into three groups. One group was exercised by running inside an automatic wheel, a second group improved their skills in a complicated obstacle course, and a third group was inactive.“The animals that learned to go through the obstacle course exhibited a greater number of brain connections than the animals in the exercised or inactive groups,” Greenough said. “In contrast, the animals that exercised inside the automatic wheel possessed a greater density of blood vessels in the brain than did either of the other two groups of animals.”Learning a new dance step may boost the brain in the same way that learning a language can, he says. And if the dance is a good physical exercise as well, the benefits multiply. Y oung brains may be especially able to boost brain power through exercise, suggested another of Greenough’s experiments that showed the most significant changes in the brain occurred among rats that had been exercised when very young. And while animals aren’t people, he says it is logical to make the inference that an effect found in rats may also apply to humans.Human studies have focused primarily on older adults and suggest that regular exercise can improve the speed with which the brain processes information. Measurements made by Arthur Kramer at the University of Illinois demonstrated that inactive adults, aged 63 to 82, could hit buttons faster in response to a tone after they went through a 10-week water exercise course. A corresponding control group that didn’t exercise showed no improvement.41.__________ can benefit from physical exercise.A. Only the heart and lungsB. Only bones and musclesC. Only the brainD. All of the above42. What makes the brain better able to process information?A. V igorous physical exercise.B. Skill-based exercise.C. Both of them.D. Neither of them.43. While _________ of rats showed a greater number of brain connections, ________ had a greater density of blood vessels in the brain.A. the first group/the third groupB. the second group/the third groupC. the first group/the second groupD. the second group/the first group44. One possible reasons for scientists to make experiments with rats or other animals is that _____.A. rats benefits from the experimentsB. the experiments can boost the brains of the ratsC. an effect found in rats may also apply to humansD. rats and humans are very much alike45. Which word in Paragraph 6 tells us that older adults were divided into two groups in the humans studies?A. Corresponding.B. Inactive.C. Older.D. Faster./Passage T woMary Engelbreit was a talented but struggling artist in her mid-twenties when she flew to New Y ork from her native Saint Louis, hoping to find work illustrating children’s books----her life’goal. So she was disappointed when all the book publishers she visited turned her down. One even suggested her drawings might be better suited to greeting cards.“I was crushed,” she admits. Greeting cards seemed a comedown from her high expectations, but the advice stayed with her, and she decided to give it a try. The results transformed her life forever.Today Mary Engelbreit sells an astonishing 14 million greeting cards a year. Her popular designs appear on more than 2,000 products, including books, calendars, and kitchen items. She runs a retail company and the annual sales are in the $100 million range----all as a result of that fateful, disappointing trip to New Y ork.Once you know Engelbreit’s distinctive style, you can recognize her cards from 200 paced away----bright, funny, and with an eye to the past. Engelbreit is cheerful, down-to-earth, humorous, and always cute. “ I think the world could use more cuteness,”she explains. Indeed, it’s her trademark. With her work taking off in so many directions, it was perhaps inevitable that Engelbreitwould eventually realize her dream of illustrating a children’s book. In 1993 she created drawings for a children’book and saw it become a best-seller. At the same time she made a surprising discovery: “It was fun, but oddly enough, I like doing greeting cards best.”46. When she flew to New Y ork, Mary Engelbreit expected ______.A. she would be better suited to drawing greeting cardsB. she would be turned down by the book publishersC. she would give a try at drawing greeting cardD. she would illustrate children’s book47. According to the writer, Mary Engelbreit finally realized her dream of illustrating children’sbook because____.A. she learned how to illustrate children’s booksB. she kept her feet firmly on the groundC. she overcame many difficultiesD. she succeeded in many different waysPassage ThreeAmy High is decked out in the traditional pink dress and golden stole of ancient Rome. She bursts into a third-grade classroom and greets her students: "Salvete, omnes!" (Hello, everyone!) The kids respond in kind, and soon they are studying derivatives. "How many people are in a duet?" High asks. All the kids know the answer, and when she asks how they know, a boy responds, "Because duo is 'two' in Latin." High replies, "Plaudite!" and the 14 kids erupt in applause. They learn the Latin root later, or side, and construct such English words as bilateral and quadrilateral. "Latin's going to open up so many doors for you," High says. "Y ou're going to be able to figure out the meaning of words you've never seen before."High teaches at Providence Elementary School in Fairfax City, V a., which has a lot riding on the success of her efforts. As part of V irginia's high-stakes testing program, schools that don't boost their scores by the year 2007 could lose state funding. So Fairfax City, just 18 miles southwest of the White House, has upgraded its two crumbling elementary schools with new high-tech television studios, computer labs and one very old feature--mandatory Latin. Here lies one of the more counterintuitive developments of the standardized-testing movement: Though some critics complain that teachers are forced to dumb down their lessons and "teach to the test,"some schools are offering more challenging course work as a way of engaging students. In the past three years, scores of elementary schools in high-stakes testing states such as Texas, V irginia and Massachusetts have added Latin programs. Says Allen Griffith, a member of the Fairfax City school board: "If we’re trying to improve English skills, teaching Latin is an awfully effective, proved method."This is not your father's Latin, which was taught to elite college-bound high schoolers and drilled into them through memorization. Its tedium and perceived irrelevance almost drove Latin from public schools. Today's growth in elementary school Latin has been spurred by new, interactive oral curriculums, enlivened by lessons in Roman mythology and culture. "One thing that makes it engaging for kids is the goofy fun of investigating these guys in togas," says Marion Polsky, author of First Latin: A Language Discovery Program, the textbook used in Fairfax City.Latin enthusiasts believe that if young students learn word roots, they will be able to decipher unfamiliar words. (By some estimates, 65% of all English words have Latin roots.) Latin is an almost purely phonetic language. There are no silent letters, and each letter represents a single sound. That makes it useful in teaching reading. And once kids master the grammatical structure of Latin--which is simple, logical and consistent--they will more easily grasp the many grammatical exceptions in English.51.From the first Paragraph we learn that _____.A. the students show little interest in learning LatinB. the students say hello to their teacher in LatinC. Amy High teaches the students to read Bible in LatinD. learning English is unnecessary if you have perfectly mastered Latin52.Which of the following statements is not true according to the text?A. Each Chinese family is now urged to have no more than one child. And the hope is to reach a zero population growth with the total number of births equaling the total number of deaths by the year 2000.
A major new study shows that the situation may be changing. A large and rapid drop in the world’s birth rate has taken place during the past 10 years. Families generally are smaller now than they were a few years ago. It is happening in both developing and industrial nations.

He called that unit one horsepower. With this unit he could measure the work his steam engine could do.He discovered that a horse could lift a 3300-pound weight 10 feet into the air in one minute. His engine could lift a 3300-pound weight 100 feet in one minute.Because his engine did ten times as much work as the horse, Watt called it a ten horsepower engine.16. It Happened 200 Years AgoPassage 2Greenwich is on the River Thames, five miles from the middle of London, and its history is two thousand years old. The first English people were fishermen there, and they named the place Greenwich, meaning “g reen village”. Later the English kings and queens lived at Greenwich in their beautiful palaces. The name of the earliest palace was Placentia. Its windows were made of glass — the first in England. Henry VIII lived there. He knew that England must be strong at sea. So he started two big ship yards (造船所) at Greenwich, and for 350 years the ships which were made there were the best in the world. But trouble was coming to Greenwich. In 1649, a war started in England and for eleven years there was no king. The men who had worked for him at Placentia decided to live in the place themselves. They sold all its beautiful things, and bought small pieces of the palace garden with money. Finally, the war ended and King Charles II came back. But Placentia was falling down. So King Charles built a new and bigger palace, which is now open to the public. At this time, Charles was worried about losing so many of its ships at sea — their sailors did not know how to tell exactly where they were. So in 1675, Charles made John Flamsteed, the first astronomer in England, try to find the answer. Flamsteed worked in a new building on the high ground in Greenwich Park. From it, with a telescope which he made himself, Flamsteed could look all round the sky. And he did, night after night, for twenty years. Carrying on Flamsteed’s work a hundred years later, an astronomer called Harrison finally made a clock which told the time at sea, and helped sailors to know where they were. You can see Harrison’s clock, still working, in Greenwich’s museum of the sea. Because of Flamsteed’s work, every country in the world now tells its time by Greenwich Time.21. For this reason, scientists are interested in devices that give promise of more precise timekeeping. In their search for precision, scientists have turned to atomic clocks that depend on various vibrating atoms or molecules to supply their “ticking.”This is possible because each kind of atom or molecule has its own characteristic rate of vibration. The nitrogen atom in ammonia, for example, vibrates or “ticks ”24 billion times a second. One such atomic clock is so accurate that it will probably lose no more than a second in 3,000 years. It will be of great importance in fields such as astronomical observation and long range navigation. The heart of this Atomichron is a cesium that vibrates 9.2 billion times a second when heated to the temperature of boiling water. An atomic that operates with an ammonia molecule may be used to check the accuracy of predictions based on Einstein ’s relativity theories, according to which a clock in motion and a clock at rest should keep time differently. Placed in an orbiting satellite moving at a speed of 18,000 miles an hour, the clock could broadcast its time reading to a ground station, where they would be compared with the readings on similar model. Whatever differences develop would be checked against the differences predicted.1.The selection says that the accuracy of scientific observation depend on__B__ .A. methods of measurementB. timekeeping methodsC. basic assumptionsD. earlier experiment 2.Atomic clocks differ according to __D__ .A.functionB. type of molecule or atom usedC. rate of vibrationD. both B and C 3.The Atomichron will be used in ___A_.A. making astronomical observationsB. broadcastingC. measuring vibration ratesD. all of above 4.Identical atomic clocks maybe used to check ___C__ . Did you ever wonder how it is possible for us to recognize people? Even a skilled writer probably could not describe all the features that make one face different from another. Yet a very young child —or even an animal, such as a pigeon —can learn to recognize faces. We all take this ability for granted. We also tell people apart by how they behave. When we talk about someone ’s personality, we mean the ways in which he or she acts, speaks, thinks and feels that make that individual different from others.Like the human face, human personality is very complex . But describing someone ’s personality in words is somewhat easier than describing his face. If you were asked to describe what a “nice face ” liked like, you probably would have a difficult time doing so. But if you were asked to describe a “nice person ”, you might begin to think about someone who was kind, considerate, friendly, warm, and so forth. There are words to describe how a person thinks, feels, and acts. Gordon Allport, an American psychologist, found nearly 18,000 English words characterizing differences in people ’s behavior. And many of us use this information as a basis for describing, or typing his personality. Bookworms, conservatives, military types-people are described with such terms.People have always tried to “type ” each other. Actors in early Greek drama wore masks to show the audience whether they played the villain ’s or the hero ’s role. In fact, the words “person ” and “personality ” come from the Latin persona, meaning “mask ”. Today, most television and move actors do not wear masks. But we can easily tell the “Good guy ” from “bad guys ” because the two types differ in appearance as well as in actions.6. By using the example of fingerprints, the author tells us that ___A___ . 大学英语第一册测试题A1In the United States elementary education begins at the age of six. At this stage nearly ail the teachers are women, mostly married. (76) The atmosphere is usually very friendly, and the teachers have now accepted the idea that the important thing is to make the children happy and interested. The old authoritarian (要绝对服从的) methods of education were discredited (不被认可) rather a long time ago - so much so that many people now think that they have gone too far in the direction of trying to make children happy and interested rather than giving them actual instruction. The social education of young children tries to make them accept the idea that human beings in a society need to work together for their common good. So the emphasis is on co-operation rather than competition throughout most of this process. This may seem curious, in view of the fact that American society is highly competitive; however, the need for making people sociable in this sense has come to be regarded as one of the functions of education. Most Americans do grow up with competitive ideas, and obviously quite a few as criminals, but it is not fair to say that the educational system fails. It probably does succeed in making most people sociable and ready to help one another both in material ways and through kindness and friendliness.1. According to the passage, the U.S. elementary education is supposed to make children__D________.A. sensible and sensitiveB. competitive and interestedC. curious and friendlyD. happy and co-operative2. Some Americans complain about elementary schools because they think__D________.A. children are reluctant to help each otherB. schools lay too much emphasis on co-operationC. children should grow up with competitive ideasD. schools give little actual instruction to children3. The author's attitude towards American education can be best described as____A______.A. favorableB. negativeC. tolerantD. unfriendly4. The American educational system emphasizes____C______.A. material wealthB. competitionC. co-operationD. personal benefit5. The word "sociable" (Line 8, Paragraph 2) most probably means__B________.A. fond of talking freelyB. friendly with other peopleC. concerned about social welfareD. happy at schoolA2Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:Languages are remarkably complex and wonderfully complicated organs of culture. (They contain the quickest and the most efficient means of communicating within their respective culture.) To learn a foreign language is to learn another culture. In the words of a poet and philosopher, “As many languages as one speaks, so many lives one lives.” A culture and its language are as necessary as brain and body; while one is a part of the other, neither can function without the other. In learning a foreign language, the best beginning would be starting with the non-language elements of the language: its gestures, its body language, etc. Eye contact is extremely important in English. Direct eye contact leads to understanding, or, as the English saying goes, seeing eye-to-eye. We can never see eye-to-eye with a native speaker of English until we have learned to look directly into his eyes.6. The best title for this passage is DA. Organs of CultureB. Brain and BodyC. Looking into his eyesD. Language and Culture7. According to this passage, the best way to learn a foreign language is_____C_____A. to read the works of poets and philcsophersB. to find a native speaker and look directly into his eyesC. to begin by learning its body languageD. to visit a country where you can study8. According to this passage, gestures are_________B_A. spoken wordsB. a non-language elementC. pictures in a languageD. written language9. "As many languages as one speaks, so many lives..." means____C______A. if one learns many foreign languages, one will have a better understanding of his own languageB. life is richer and more interesting if one knows several languagesC. no matter how many languages one knows, one can never know more than one's own cultureD. if a person speaks only one language, he will live a very happy life10. Which of the following doesn't share the same meaning with the others? CA. signsB. gesturesC. efficientD. body languageB1In the United States elementary education begins at the age of six. The old authoritarian (要绝对服从的) methods of education werediscredited (不被认可) rather a long time ago - so much so that many people now think that they have gone too far in the direction of trying to make children happy and interested rather than giving them actual instruction.
