But actually the umbrella was not invented as protection against rain. Its first use was as a shade (遮光物)against the sun!Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, way back in the 11 century BC.We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing connected with its use: it became a symbol of honour and authority. In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by royalty or by those in highoffice. In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. And the umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece. But it is believed that the first persons in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans.During the Middle Ages, the use of the umbrella practically disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late 16th century. And again it was considered a symbol of power and authority. By 1680, the umbrella appeared in France, and later on in England.By the 18th century, the umbrella was used against rainthroughout most of Europe. Umbrella have not changed much in style during all this time, though they have become much lighter in weight. T o many people, the cause is clear: we eat too much. But scientific experiments do little to support this idea. Going back to the America of 1910, we find that people were thinner than today, yet they ate more food. In those days people worked harder physically, walked more, used machines much less, and didn't watch television.Several modern studies, besides, have shown that fatter people do not eat more on average than thinner people. In fact, some research work, such as the 1979 study of 3,545 London office workers, reports that fat people eat less than thinner people on average. Studies show that thin people are more active than fat people. A study by the research group at Standford University School of Medicine found the following fact: the more the man ran, the greater body fat he lost. The more he ran, the greater was his need for food. Thus, those who ran the most ate the most, yet lost the greatest amount of body fat.11. What kind of physical problem do many grown-up Americans have?A. They are too thin.B. They work too hard.C. They are too fat.D. They lose too much body fat.12. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or older. Today, 10 out o f every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect American society in many ways — education, medici ne, and business. Quietly the graying of America. has made us a very different society — one in which people have a quite diff erent idea of what kind of behavior is suitable at various ages.A person’s age no longer tells you anything about his/her social position, marriage or health. There’s no longer a particular yea r in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school, get a job, or stop working isn’t as strong as it used to be. It doesn't surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother, or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the first time. Public notions are changing. Many people say, "I am much younger than my mother — or my father — was at my age." No one says "act your age" anymore. We've stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.(17.5分)16). It can be learnt from the text that the aging of the population in America ____.(3.5分)(A) has made people feel younger(B) has changed people’s social position(C) has changed people’s understanding of age(D) has slowed down the country’s social development参考答案:C17). The underlined word “one” refers to ______.(3.5分)(A) a society(B) America(C) a place(D) population参考答案:A18). We can infer from the text that if a 25-year-old man becomes general manager of a big firm, the writer would most proba bly consider it _________.(3.5分)(A) normal(B) wonderful(C) unbelievable(D) unreasonable参考答案:A19). “Act your age” means people should ________.(3.5分)(A) be active when they are old(B) do the right thing at the right age(C) show respect for their parents young or old(D) take more physical exercise suitable to their age参考答案:B20). This passage is mainly about ____________________.(3.5分)(A) why American society is different(B) suitable behaviors at different age in American’s eyes(C) how older people act in youthful ways in America(D) how American people’s ideas about age have changed参考答案:DJust as the degree of individual freedom in America seems loose and therefore uncomfortable to many visitors, in many countri es, people will tell you what they think you want to hear, whether or not it is true. To them, this is the polite thing to do. To A mericans it is considered confusing — even dishonest — to avoid telling the truth, even if the only purpose is to be polite. It is helpful to remember that different cultures consider some matters more important than others. For Americans, however, trust and truth are most important. One of the worst things that can be said about someone in America is that “you cannot trust hi m.”Considering such differences in values among many cultures of the world, it is natural that misunderstandings occur. “How far i s it to the next town?” an American asks a man standing by the road. In some countries , because the man realizes the travele r is tired and eager to reach the next village, he will politely say, “Just down the road”. He thinks this is more encouraging, gen tler, and therefore the answer the traveler wants to hear. So the American drives alone for many more hours before he comes t o the village. The traveler is angry, with a feeling of being fooled. He thinks that the man has lied to him on purpose because h e must have known quite well what the distance was.If a visitor to the United States asked an American standing by the road how far the next town was, the American would think it dishonest if he said it was near when he knew it was really 24 miles away. Although he, too, would be sympathetic with the t ired traveler, he would say, “You have a long way to go yet; it is at least 24 miles more.” The traveler might be disappointed , b ut he would know what to expect, and there would be no misunderstanding.(17.5分)21). People in other cultures choose not to tell the truth to the visitors because _______________.(3.5分)(A) they try to confuse the visitors(B) they consider it comfortable(C) they try to be polite(D) they consider it helpful参考答案:C22). Americans insist on telling the truth because __________________.(3.5分)(A) they don’t mind confusing people(B) they are not considerate(C) they are not polite(D) they value trust and truth参考答案:D23). In paragraph 2, the misunderstanding occurs because ____________________.(3.5分)(A) the man standing by the road doesn’t know where the American is going(B) the man standing by the road is dishonest and lied to the American(C) the man standing by the road wants to encourage the American(D) the man standing by the road knows the shortest way to the village参考答案:C24). We can infer from paragraph 3 that ____________________.(3.5分)(A) the American has no idea about how tired the traveler is(B) the American considers honesty important(C) the American wants to disappoint the traveler(D) the American knows what the traveler wants to hear参考答案:B25). What is the writer’s attitude toward the different cultures? (3.5分)(A) The writer thinks it natural for people in different cultures to misunderstand each other.(B) The writer thinks American culture better than many cultures of the world.(C) The writer thinks American culture worse than many cultures of the world.(D) The writer thinks people will always get confused with the cultural differences.参考答案:AA new study suggests that the more teenagers watch television, the more likely they are to develop depression(忧郁症)as yo ung adults. But the extent to which TV may or may not be to blame is a question that the study leaves unanswered. The researchers used a national long-term survey of adolescent health to investigate the relationship between media use and depression. They based their findings on more than four thousand adolescents who were not depressed when the survey bega n in 1995.As part of the survey, the young people were asked how many hours of television or videos they watched daily. They were also asked how often they played computer games and listened to the radio. Media use totaled an average of 5.5 hours a day. More than 2 hours of that was spent watching TV.Seven years later, in 2002, more than 7 percent of the young people had signs of depression. The average age at that time wa s 21. Brian Primack at the University of Pittsburgh medical school was the lead author of the new study. He says every extra h our of television meant an 8 percent increase in the chances of developing signs of depression. The researchers say they did n ot find any such relationship with the use of other media such as movies, video games or radio. But the study did find that you ng men were more likely than young women to develop depression, given the same amount of media use.Doctor Primack says the study did not explore if watching TV causes depression. But one possibility, he says, is that it may tak e time away from activities that could help prevent depression, like sports and socializing. It might also interfere with sleep, he says, and that could have an influence.(17.5分)26). According to the passage, the researchers have found ________________________.(3.5分)(A) in what way watching TV causes depression(B) why teenagers like to watch TV(C) the relationship between depression and the use of all forms of media(D) the relationship between depression and watching TV参考答案:D27). As used in paragraph 2, the word “adolescent” means ________________.(3.5分)(A) teenager(B) media use(C) young adult(D) average age参考答案:A28). About the methodology of the research, the writer has mentioned all of the following except that _______________.(3.5分)(A) the research was made nationwide(B) the research was made between 1995 and 2002(C) the adolescents in the survey were all depressed(D) the adolescents were asked how they used various types of media参考答案:C29). The tone of this passage can be described as __________________.(3.5分)(A) critical(B) argumentative(C) emotional(D) factual参考答案:DWhen having a meal, a European usually holds the knife in the right hand, and the fork in the left. He uses the knife and fork with his both hands. He keeps his knife and fork in his hands until he finishes eating. But an American, on the opposite, may use just one hand whenever possible and keep the other hand on his lap. He uses the f ork in his right hand to pickup fried potatoes. When he has to cut his meat, he changes his fork to the left hand and cuts it. Th en he puts down the knife and changes his fork to his right hand to pick up the sliced meat. Then, perhaps, he will suddenly th ink of his coffee or orange. So he has to put down his fork in order to drink his coffee or orange. Now you can see, an America n is busy all the time at the dinner table. By the way, Europeans usually have their coffee after meals, but many Americans pre fer to have coffee during the meal.If you are present at a formal dinner, you might be confused to find so many forks, knives and spoons put before you. You mig ht be at a loss to know what to do with them. Don’t worry. The rule is simple. You just use them in the order in which they lie, beginning from outside towards the plate. The small fork on the outside on the left is for salad. The spoon on the outside on th e right is for soup. There is another little knife, called a butter spreader, on a bread-and-butter plate on the left. As the bread i s passed, each guest helps himself and puts his pieces on the small plate. Next to the soup there will probably be the blunt kni fe for fish, which is smaller and blunter than other knives.(17.5分)31). During the twentieth century there was an unusual shortening of the time of a woman’s life spent in caring for children. A woman who got married at the end of the 19th century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which custom, chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women get married at a younger age and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and is likely to take paid work untilretirement at sixty. Even while she has the care of children ,her work is lightened by household appliances(家用电器)and convenience foods. This important change in women’s way of life has only recently begun to have its full effect on women’s economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school at the first opportunity and most of them took a full-time job. However, when they got married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at school after that age, and though women tend to get married young, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Many more return afterwards to a full-time or part-time job. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with both husband and wife accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfaction of family life, and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money and running the home, according to the abilities and interest of each of them.21. We are told that in an average family about 1890________.A. many children died before they were fiveB. the youngest child would be fifteen years younger than the oldestC. seven of eight children lived to be more than fiveD. the child death rate was rather high22. According to the passage, it is now quite usual for women to ________.A. stay at home after leaving schoolB. marry men younger than themselvesC. start working again later in lifeD. get married while still at school25. The signals were coming from a very small body----no bigger, perhaps, than the earth. Was that why no light could be seen from it Or were the signals coming from a planet that belonged to some other star There was no end to the questions, but the scientists kept the news secret. “Perhaps there are intelligent beings out there,” theythought, “who are trying to send messages to other planets, or to us!” So the news was not given to the newspapers. Instead, the scientists studied the signals and searched for others like them…Well, all that happened in 1967 and 1968. Since then scientists have learnt more about those strange, regular, radio signals. And they have told the story, of course. The signals do not come from a planet; they come from a new kind of star called a “pulsar”. About a hundred other pulsars have now been found, and most of them are very like the first one.Pulsars are strong radio stars. They are the smallest but the heaviest stars we know at present. A handful of pulsar would weigh a few thousand tons. Their light----if they give much light----is too small for us to see. But we can be sure of this: no intelligent beings are living on them.26. The radio signals were sent by .A. a satelliteB. a planetC. a sky body which was unknown at that timeD. intelligent beings who were unknown at that time28. In the United States, it is an annual (每年的) occasion to show thanks to God for his goodness. As a historical, national and religious holiday, Thanksgiving Day began with the English in Plymouth Colony. As far back as 1621, after a long bitter winter and the gathering of the first harvest, these early settlers shared a feast with the local Indians and offered prayers of thanksgiving. President Washington proclaimed (宣布) the first nationalThanksgiving Day to be celebrated on November 26, 1789. The next day, the following news appeared on page two of the town’s newspaper, The Beldon Post:FIRE AT SEABREEZELate last night firemen hurried to the Seabreeze Hotel and quickly put out a small fire in a bedroom The hotel manager said that a cigarette sta rted the fire. An angry holiday-maker said, “An electric lamp probably started the fire. The bedroom lamps are very old at some of these hotels. When I turned my bedside light on, I h eard a funny noise from the lamp.” We are glad to tell our readers that this sort of adventure does not happen in Canfield. What are the facts, then? During the twentieth century there was an unusual shortening of the time of a woman’s life spent in caring for children. A woman who got married at the end of the 19th century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which custom, chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women get married at a younger age and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and is likely to take paid work until retirement at sixty. Even while she has the care of children ,her work is lightened by household appliances(家用电器)and convenience foods. This important change in women’s way of life has only recently begun to have its full effect on women’s ec onomic position. They were coming from a point in the sky where there was no know star. They were coming veryregularly too: about once a second. It was as if they were controlled bya clock. The scientists who heard the signals did not tell anybody else. They were rather afraid to tell in case they frightened people. Thesignals were coming from a very small body----no bigger, perhaps, than the earth. Was that why no light could be seen from it? Or werethe signals coming from a planet that belonged to some other star? There was no end to the questions, but the scientists kept the news secret. “Perhaps there are intelligent beings out there,” they thought,“who are trying to send messages to other planets, or to us!” So thenews was not given to the newspapers. Instead, the scientists studiedthe s ignals and searched for others like them…Well, all that happened in 1967 and 1968. Since then scientists have learnt more about those strange, regular, radio signals. And theyhave told the story, of course. The signals do not come from a planet;they com e from a new kind of star called a “pulsar”. About a hundredother pulsars have now been found, and most of them are very like thefirst one.Pulsars are strong radio stars. They are the smallest but the heaviest stars we know at present. A handful of pulsar would weigh afew thousand tons. Their light----if they give much light----is too smallfor us to see. But we can be sure of this: no intelligent beings are living on them.26. President Washington proclaimed (宣布) the first national Thanksgiving Day to be celebrated on November 26, 1789. The book The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin is probably one of the most famous books ever written by a scientist. Yet it is a book which the writer did not want to publish; he only agreed to make his theory known to the public when he was forced to by his friends. In 1831, the British Government sent a ship called Beagle to South America to make maps of the coast. At that time, Darwin w as a young man in his twenties who had studied science in Edinburgh and Cambridge. Through a friend, he was offered the job of studying the plants and animals of the different countries that the Beagle was to visit. Darwin’s father told him not to go, an d the captain of the Beagle said that he did not like the shape of Darwin’s nose; but that did not stop him, and in December of that year, Darwin sailed for South America. He spent five years on the ship, collecting many samples and writing down his obs ervations about the living things he found. When he returned to England, he tried to work out a theory to explain what he had observed. It was clear that many species w ere connected with each other in some way, without being exactly the same. Why was this? Two years after his return, he deve loped a theory: only the strongest or the cleverest could survive difficult conditions. Over time, the species changes slowly to fi t the environment. Different environments produce different species.(17.5分)

But his effort failed. He ordered his troops to Versailles. The people thought that Louis intended to put down the Revolution by force. On July 14,1789, they stormed and took the Bastille, where political prisoners were kept. Ever since that day, July 14 has been the French National Day. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 p.m. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours,he assumes it’s a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importan ce. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, it would be too impolite. A person who is 5 minutes late, will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence. (260 words)36. What is the main idea of this passage? _____B_____A. It is not customary to telephone someone in the morning and in sleeping hours in the U.S.B. The role of time in social life over the world.C. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible in theU.S.D. Not every country treats the concept of time as the same.37. What does it mean in the passage if you call someone during his or her sleeping hours? ____B______A. A matter of work.B. A matter of life or death.C. You want to see him or her.D. You want to make an appointment with him or her.38. Which of the following time is proper if you want to make an appointment with your friend? _____B_____A. at 7: 00 am.B. at 4:00 pm.C. at the midnight.D. at 4:00 am.39. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? ____D______A. In the U.S.A guests tend to feel they are highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner partyis extended only three or four days before the party date.B. There is no misunderstanding arising between people from different cultures about theconcept of time.C. It may be considered foolish to make an appointment well in advance in the U.S.A..D. Promptness is valued highly in American life.40. From the passage we can safely infer that ___B_______.A. it’s a matter of life or death if you call someone in day timeB. the meaning of time differs in different parts of the worldC. it makes no difference in the U.S. whether you are early or late for a business partyD. if a person is late for a date, he needn’t make some explanationPassage 3 外国人对美国人的第一印象很可能是美国人个个都在压力之下A foreigner’s first impression of the U.S. is likely to be that everyone is in a rush-often under pressure. City people appear always to be hurrying to get where they are going restlessly, seeking attention in a store, and elbowing others as they try to complete their errands (任务). Racing through daytime meals is part of the pace of life in this country.Working time is considered precious. Others in public eating places are waiting for you to finish so that they too can be served and get back to work within the time allowed. Each person hurries to make room for the next person. If you don’t, waiters will hurry you.You also find drivers will be abrupt and that people will push past you. You will miss smiles, brief conversations, and small courtesies with strangers. Don’t take it personally. This is because people value time highly, and they resent someone else “wasting” it beyond a certain courtesy point. The view of time affects the importance we attach to patience. In the American system of values, patience is not a high priority. Many of us have what might be called “a short fuse.” We begin to move restlessly about if we feel time is slipping away without some returnbe this in terms of pleasure, work value, or rest. Those coming from lands where time is looked upon differently may find this matter of pace to be one of their most difficult adjustments in both business and daily life. Many newcomers to the States will miss the opening courtesy of a business call, for example, they will miss the ritual socializing that goes with a welcoming cup of tea or coffee they may be traditional in their own country. They may miss leisurely business chats in a caféor coffeehouse. Normally, Americans do not assess their visitors in such relaxed surroundings over prolonged small talks. We seek out evidence of past performance rather than evaluate a business colleague through social courtesies. Since we generally assess and probe professionally rather than socially, we start talking business very quickly. (348 words)41. Which of the following statements is wrong? ____D______A. Americans seem to be always under pressure.B. Americans attach less importance to patience.C. Americans don’t care much about ritual socializing.D. Americans are impolite to their business colleagues.42. In the fourth paragraph, “a high priority” means ___B_______.A. a less important thingB. a first concernC. a good businessD. an attractive gift43. Americans evaluate a business colleague ____D______.A. through social courtesyB. through prolonged business talksC. by establishing business relationsD. by learning about their past performance44. This passage mainly talks about _____A_____.A. how Americans treasure their timeB. how busy Americans are every dayC. how Americans do business with foreignersD. what American way of life is like45. We can infer from the passage that the author’s tone in writing is ___C________.A. criticalB. ironicalC. appreciativeD. objectivePassage FourBetty and Harold have been married for years, but one thing still puzzles old Harold. How is it that he can leave Betty and her friend Joan sitting on the sofa, talking, go out to a ball-game, come back three and a half hours later, and they’re still sitting on the sofa? Talking? What in the world, Harold wonders, do they have to talk about?Betty shrugs. Talk? We’re friends.Researching this matter called friendship, psychologist Lillian spent two years interviewingmore than two hundred women and men. No matter what their age, their job, their sex, the results were completely clear: women have more friendships than men, and the difference in the content and the quality of those friendships is marked and unmistakable.More than two-thirds of the single men Rubin interviewed could not name a best friend. Those who could were likely to name a woman. Yet three-quarters of the single women had no problem naming a best friend, and almost always it was a woman. More married men than women named their wife/husband as a best friend, most trusted person, or the one they would turn to in time of emotional distress. Robin says, “M ost women have at lest one, usually more, trusted friends to whom they could turn in a troubled moment. They spoke openly about the importance of these relationships in their lives.”Rubin in her new book writes, “W omen’s relationships with each other rest on shared emotions and support, but men’s relationships are marked by shared activities.”For the most part, interactions between men are emotionally controlled – a good fit with the social requirements of manly behavior.Even a man has a best friend, the two share little about their inner feelings. Whereas a woman’s closest friend might be the first to tell her to leave a failing marriage, it wasn’t unusual to hear a man say he didn’t know his friend’s marriage was in serious trouble until he appeared one night asking if he could sleep on the sofa.46. What old Harold can’t understand or explain is the fact that _B____.A) he is treated as an outsider rather than a husbandB) women have so much to shareC) women show little interest in ball-gamesD) he finds his wife difficult to talk to47. Among them, tourist industry is one of the biggest industries of this kin d. Providing transportation and accommodations for tourists — and guides, brochures, souvenirs — is one of the major industri es in many countries. Since people are now having longer vacations and are more and more interested in seeing other parts of the world, this business will no doubt continue to grow.Another industry obviously devoted to leisure is entertainment. Movies, TV shows, concerts and plays are usually intended for our leisure. The same can be said of most books, except textbooks. Professional sports make money because people pay to wa tch them in their free time. This list could be greatly extended. But even among these industries, we have mentioned only part of the picture. The initiative highlights the cost of chronic diseases一the leading causes of death in the United States——and outlines ways that people Can prevent them, including better diet and increased exercise.“In the United States today,7 of 10 deaths and the vast majority of serious illness, disability and health care costs are caused by chronic diseases,"the Health and Human Services Department said in a statement. The causes are often behavioral——smoking, poor eating habits and a lack of exercise.“I am convinced that preventing disease by promoting better health is a smart policy choice for our future,”Thom pson told a conference held to launch the initiatiative. “Our current health care system is not structured to deal with the escala ting costs of treating diseases that are largely preventable through changes in our lifestyle choices." Thompson said heart dise ase and strokes will cost the country more than$351 billion in 2003.“These leading causes of death for men and women are l argely preventable, yet we as a nation are not taking the steps necessary for US to lead healthier, longer lives,”he said. The $15 million is slated to go to communities to promote prevention, pushing for changes as simple as building sidewalks to encourage people to walk more.Daily exercise such as walking can prevent and even reverse heart disease and diabetes, and prevent cancer and strokes. The money will also go to community organizations, clinics and nutritionists who are being encouraged to work together to educat e people at risk of diabetes about what they can do to prevent it and encourage more cancer screening. The American Cancer Society estimates that half of all cancers can be caught by screening, including Pap tests for cervical cancer, mammograms for breast cancer, colonoscopies, and prostate checks. If such cancers were all caught by early screening.the group estimates that the survival rate for cancer would rise to 95 perce nt.(17.5分)21). This season, however, 20 percent of NBA rosters (花名册) will be filled by non-Americans. NBA commissioner D avid Stern happily embraces the trend. On a visit to Paris in October, Stern outlined his vision for the future, which is likely to s ee Europe hosting NBA games by 2010.The NBA is now planning to take China by storm.“Our experience in China has been that it is going to be explosive in its growth,” said Stern. The strategy in China is TV. “We’ve made 14 deals in China with local and national networks on cable and satellite.” The success Chinese centre Yao Ming has pave d the way for the NBA marketing blitz in China. The NBA, which is broadcasted in more than 200 countries in 42 languages, wil l put that to the test in October 2004 when the Houston Rockets play two pre-season games against the Sacramento Kings in Beijing market to compensate for tough times on home soil.“It doesn’t matter where the players come from, all the NBA teams now know that they have to scout (寻找) internationally,” s aid Terry Lyons, the NBA’s vice-president of international public relations. “It has increased the level of competition here.” As Fr enchman Tony Parker and Argentine Emanuel Ginobili showed in winning championship rings with the San Antonio Spurs last s eason, many people can earn the respect of their America peers. Others, such as Houston Rockets’ Chinese centre Yao Ming—No.1 draft pick in 2002—and the Detroit Pistons’ 18-year-old Serb Darko Milicic—number two overall in this year’s draft—are ic ons (偶像) in waiting. It is the ultimate (根本的) revolution—the rest of the world teaching the US how to play basketball.(17.5分)26). Which of the following can be used as the best title for the passage?(3.5分)(A) The Non-American Basketball Players(B) NBA is Coming to China(C) The Foreign Ties that Bind the NBA(D) NBA is Making Big Progress参考答案:CThe British psychoanalyst John Bowlby maintains that separation from the parents during the sensitive“attachment” period fro m birth to three may scar a child’s personality and I predispose to emotional problems in later life. Some people have drawn t he conclusion from Bowlby’s work that children should not be subjected to day care before the age of three because of the par ental separation it entails, and many people do believe this. But there are also arguments against such a strong conclusion. F irstly, anthropologists point out that the insulated love affair between children and parents;found in modem societies does no t usually exist in traditional societies. For example,in some tribal societies, such as the Ngoni, the father and mother of a ch ild did not rear their infant alone—far from it'.Secondly, common sense tells US that day care would not be so widespread to day if parents care-takers found children had problems with it.Statistical studies of this kind have not yet been carried out,a nd even if they were, the results would be certain to be complicated and controversial.Thirdly.in the last decade there have been a number of careful American studies of children in day care, and they have uniformly reported that day care had a neur al or slightly positive effect on children’s development. But tests that have had to be used to measure this development are no t widely enough accepted to settle the issue. But Bowlby’s analysis raises the possibility that early day care has delayed effects. The possibility that such care might lead t o,say, more mental illness or crime 15 or 20 years later can only be explored by the use of statistics.Whatever the long—te rm effects, parents sometimes find the immediate effects difficult to deal with。

person thinking of going on the stage is “don’t!” but it is useless to discourage someone who feels that he must act, although the chances of his becoming famous are slim. the normal way to begin is to go to a drama school. usually only students who show promise and talent are accepted, and the course lasts two years. then the young actor or actress takes up work with a theatrical company, usually as assistant stage manager. this means doing everything that there is to do in the theatre and occasionally acting in very small parts. it is very hard work indeed, the hours are long and the salary is tiny.of course, some people have remarkable chances which lead to fame and success without this long and hard training. connie pratt, for example, was just an ordinary girl working in a bicycle factory. a film producer happened to catch sight of her one morning waiting at a bus stop, as he drove past in his car. he stopped and got out to speak to the girl. he asked if she would like show that he was learning latin, was very interested in the basics of good behavior in society, and was reading english literature.at school he seems only to have been interested in mathematics. in fact, his formal education was surprisingly brief for a gentleman, and incomplete. for unlike other young virginian of that day, he did not go to the college of william and mary in the virginian capital of williamsburg. in terms of formal training then, washington contrasts sharply with some other early american presidents such as john adams, thomas jefferson and james madison. in later years, washington probably regretted his lack of intellectual training. he never felt comfortable in a debate in congress, or on any subject that had not to do with everyday, practical matters. and because he never learned french and could not speak directly to the french leaders, he did not visit the country he admired so much. thus, unlike jefferson and第 4 页共 22 页adams, he never reached gentlemen15. the main idea of the passage is that washington’s education .a. was of great variety, covering many subjectsb. was probably equal to those of most young gentlemen of his timec. may seem poor by modern standards, but was good enough for his timed. was rather limited for a presidentpassage 4during the meal, you’d better be careful not to leave a spoonin a soup bowl or coffee cup or any other dish. the coffee spoon ought to be on the saucer, the soup spoon ought to be on the plate under the bowl. when you are having soup, make the least noises and use the side of your spoon inside out this way, not the tip. and you mustn’t pick up your soup bowls so as to drink away the last drops of your soup from the bottomof the bowl.very often there is only one main course and salad, followed by your s weet. if you find the meal not enough, say “oh, it’s delicious!” and ask for some more of the chicken or steak or whatever you have just had. the hostess will be very glad that you appreciate her cooking and will give you an extra portion. but if you obser ve the chinese way of being polite and say “no, thank you” when the hostess offers you more, you will most probably starve later, because americans will never press food on you. yet it is not polite to keep silent and not to talk with the person next to you. it would be considered good manners if you handle your
