I should have paid a man to do it, but foolishly confident in my driving ability, I decided to hire a lorry and drive it myself.Moving the lorry backward in my yard, I crashed into a small shed, causing permanent damage. Fortunately, I owned the shed. I loaded up with the furniture and set out. By now it was rush hour. My nerves broke down, as I drove the huge lorry through the streets nervously. At last I arrived at Charlotte Street and found an available parking space. I moved the lorry into it only to notice three people at a pavement cafe waving to me. I got out, trembling violently, like one who had justfinished a stormy Atlantic crossing. “You’ve hit the car parked behind you,” they said. I examined the car. There were white scratches on its front face. It bore a disabled sign. So, now I was a bad driver and a bad man. Under the severe look of the three, I left an apologetic note on the da maged car’s windscreen, giving my phone number.I unloaded the furniture, dripping the sweat, wanting only to escape from the monster. I drove it back to its base at Edgware. On arrival, the boss told me I must fill it up with petrol before returning it. “Just charge me,”I cried, still shaking with fear. He stared at me with understanding. No doubt he’d witnessed others in this state before. “How about I drive you to a petrol station, you fill up, and I drive it back?” he asked. He danced the great lorry through the traffic so carefully that it would have shamed me if I had not been so grateful.24.The man felt ______ to have delivered the furniture himself.A.grateful B.regretfulC.proud D.confident25.The man trembled violently because ______.A.he caused a terrible traffic accident B.driving the lorry was too difficult for himC.he was afraid to see the three people D.the furniture was too heavy for him26.The man said he was a bad man most probably because ______.A.he made the traffic accident on purposeB.he parked the big lorry on the pavementC.he shouldn’t have driven the lorry himselfD.he shouldn’t have caused trouble for the disabled27.The writer intended to suggest that ______.A.it was exciting to drive a lorry B.it was hard to avoid accidentsC.being too confident is foolish D.the boss was expert in drivingCDifferent contexts affect food production, processing, trade, marketing and consumption. As a result of this, the food availability, accessibility, and affordability— as well as cons umers’ dietary behaviour and nutritional status—vary. One possible picture is presented here to provide an idea on how COVID-19 might impact the global food system.Consumer demand plays a crucial role in food production and their demands depend on purchasing power and preference. Because of the lockdown, there is no work for many people. As a result, they do not have enough money to buy adequate food for their families. The closure of restaurants, school meals and tourism businesses may reduce the demand for fresh food. People buy frozen. dried and canned food with longer shelf life. Energy-dense, less nutritious foods are often more affordable than fresh and nutritious one.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, COVID-19 is not likely to be transmitted through food. However, workers can get infected by each other if they do not maintain social distance properly. Shortage of labor can not only hamper food production, but also the processing of food.Around the world, millions of people depend on international trade either for then- livelihood or food security. The virus outbreak might slow down global trade and marketing of food. As a result, countries depending on imported food can face difficulties. The closure of ports and other supply restrictions will hamper food supply. The price of transferring food within and outside of the country may get more expensive. It means import may get more expensive and export may bring less money. On the other hand, the restriction in transport and supply can be the cause of food loss particularly for fresh fruits and vegetables. Companies may face difficulties to import the ingredients for different products which may disturb the production.28.The passage is mainly about ________.A.why the food system is easily affected by COVID-19B.how the world may be affected by COVID-19 outbreakC.what effect COVID-19 may have on the food systemD.what contexts affect food production29.How is consumers’ dietary behavior changing now?A.They are eating more fresh food. B.Inadequate ingredients.C.Increased processed food. D.Limited transport and supply.DIt was the first family ski weekend in Colorado. I was tired and considered quitting it. But I figured I should push through—if I skipped out, then the kids would think that they could too. After dropping the kids at ski school, my husband and I charted our course on the mountain map. Then, I pushed off and three minutes later, my right ski inverted (倒转的) and took my leg with it... I still remember hearing the crack.I was taken down the mountain in an ambulance. After surgery I woke up with my leg bandaged beyond recognition, my mouth dry and my mind confused. I wouldn’t walk for three months, optimistically. I couldn’t drive. I couldn’t navigate the steps in our house. I couldn’t even shower on my own. I turned to Adam and asked, “How are we going to manage?” “We’ll figure it out,” Adam said. I nodded, because what was the alternative? But nowhere in any of my cells did I believe him. Not even a tiny bit.But something unexpected happened: my children learned to be both autonomous and empathetic. They ran up the steps each day after school to check on me. Without the luxury of my packing their lunches orensuring that their homework was filed, they learned to do it themselves. And my husband too! The man previously had to be told what to do and when to do it, and sometimes why too. When I went down on the mountain, he attended to my every need, as he said to me once, “After all the years that you did so much, it was my turn to show up.”Sometimes—many times—both in life and in marriage, you hope for the sunset overlooking the ocean off a deserted beach, but what you get is a drive to physical therapy. That’s OK. When I went down on that mountain, I worried that my injury would upend everything. It turns out that it did.32.What can be inferred about the mother before the accident?A.She enjoyed herself in the ski. During one interview, she noticed that the candidate never made direct eye contact. She was puzzled and somewhat disappointed because she liked the individual otherwise. He had a perfect résumé and gave good responses to her questions, but the fact that he never looked her in the eye said “untrustworthy,” so she decided to offer the job to her second choice.“It wasn’t until I attended a diversity workshop that I realized the person we passed over was the perfect person,” Tiffany confesses. What she hadn’t known at the time of the interview was that the candidate’s “different” behavior was simply a cultural misunderstanding. He was an Asian-American raised in a household where respect for those in authority was shown by averting (避开) your eyes.“I was just thrown off by the lack of eye contact; not realizing it was cultural,” Tiffany says. “I missed out, but will not miss that opportunity again.”Many of us have had similar encounters with behaviors we perceive as different. As the world becomes smaller and our workplaces more diverse, it is becoming essential to expand our understanding of others and to reexamine some of our false assumptions.Hire AdvantageAt a time when hiring qualified people is becoming more difficult, employers who can eliminate invalid biases (偏见) from the process have a distinct advantage. My company, Mindsets LLC, helps organizations and individuals see their own blind spots. A real estate recruiter we worked with illustrates the positive difference such training can make.“During my Mindsets coaching session, I was taugh t how to recruit a diversified workforce. I recruited people from different cultures and skill sets. The agents were able to utilize their full potential and experiences to build up the company. When the real estate market began to change, it was because we had a diverse agent pool that we were able to say in the real estate market much longer than others in the same profession.”Blinded by GenderDale is an account executive who attended one of my workshops on supervising a diverse workforce. “Through on e of the sessions, I discovered my personal bias,” he recalls. “I learned I had not been looking at a person as a whole person, and be ing open to differences.” In his case, the blindness was not about culture but rather gender.“I had a management positi on open in my department; and the two finalists were a man and a woman. Had I not attended this workshop, I would have automatically assumed the man was the best candidate because the position required quite a bit of extensive travel. My reasoning would have been that even though both candidates were great and could have been successful in the position, I assumed the woman would have wanted to be home with her children and not travel.” Dale’s assumptions are another example of the well-intentioned but incor rect thinking that limits an organization’s ability to tap into the full potential of a diverse workforce.“I learned from the class that instead of imposing my gender biases into the situation, I needed to present the full range of duties, responsibilit ies and expectations to all candidates and allow them to make an informed decision.” Dale credits the workshop, “because it helped me make decisions based on fairness.”Year of the Know-It-AllDoug is another supervisor who attended one of my workshops. He recalls a major lesson learned from his own employee.“One of my most embarrassing moments was when I had a Chinese-American employee put in a request to take time off to celebrate Chinese New Year. In my ignorance, I assumed he had his dates wrong’, as the first of January had just passed. When I advised him of this, I gave him a tong talking-to about turning in requests early with the proper dates.“He patiently waited, then when I was done, he said he would like Chinese New Year off, not the Weste rn New Year. He explained politely that in his culture the new year did not begin January first, and that Chinese New Year, which is tied to the lunar cycle, is one of the most celebrated holidays on the Chinese calendar. Needless to say, I felt very embarrassed in assuming he had his dates mixed up. But I learned a great deal about assumptions, and that the timing of holidays varies considerably from culture to culture.“Attending the diversity workshop helped me realize how much I could learn by simply asking questions and creating dialogues with toy employees, rather than making assumptions and trying to be a know-it-all,” Doug admits. “The biggest thing I took away from the workshop is learning how to be more ‘inclusive’ to differences.”A Better Bottom LineAn open mind about diversity not only improves organizations internally, it is profitable as well. These comments from a customer service representative show how an inclusive attitude can improve sales. “Most of my customers speak English as a second language. One of the best things my company has done is to contract with a language service that offers translations over the phone. It wasn’t until my boss received Mindsets’ training that she was able to understand how important inclusiveness wa s to customer service. As a result, our customer base has increased.”Once we start to see people as individuals, and discard the stereotypes, we can move positively toward inclusiveness for everyone. Diversity is about coming together and taking advantage of our differences and similarities. It is about building better communities and organizations that enhance us as individuals and reinforce our shared humanity. When we begin to question our assumptions and challenge what we think we have learned from our past, from the media, peers, family, friends, etc., we begin to realize that some of our conclusions are flawed(有缺陷的) or contrary to our fundamental values. We need to train ourselves to think differently, shift our mindsets and realize that diversity opens doors for all of us, creating opportunities in organizations and communities that benefit everyone.28. Tiffany’s misjudgment about the candidate stemmed from _______.A. racial stereotypesB. invalid personal biasC. cultural ignoranceD. emphasis on physical appearance29. What kind of organization is Mindsets LLC?A. A real estate agency.B. A personnel training company.C. A cultural exchange organization.D. A hi-tech company.30. After one of the workshops, account executive Dale realized that ____.A. he had hired the wrong personB. he could have done more for his companyC. he had not managed his workforce wellD. he must get rid of his gender bias31. What did Dale think of Mindsets LLC’s workshop?A. It was well-intentioned but poorly conducted.B. It tapped into the executives’ full potential.C. It helped him make fair decisions.D. It met participants’ diverse needs.DThat’s enough, kidsIt was a lovely day at the park and Stella Bianchi was enjoying the sunshine with her two children when a young boy, aged about four, approached her two-year-old son and pushed him to the ground.“I’d watched him for a little while and my son was the fourth or fifth child he’d shoved,” she says.” I went over to them, picked up my son, turned to the boy and said, firmly, ’No, we don’t push,” What happened next was unexpected.“The boy’s mother ran toward me from across the park,” Stella says,” I thought she was coming over to apologize, but instead she started shouting at me for disciplining her child, All I did was let him know his behavior was unacceptable. Was I supposed to sit back while her kid did whatever he wanted, hurting other children in the process?”Getting your own children to play nice is difficult enough. Dealing with other people’s children has be come a minefield. In my house, jumping on the sofa is not allowed. In my sister’s house it’s encouraged. For her, it’s about kids being kids:”If you can’t do it at three, when can you do it?”Each of these philosophies is valid and, it has to be said, my s on loves visiting his aunt’s house. But I find myself saying “no” a lot when her kids are over at mine. That’s OK between sisters but becomes dangerous territory when you’re talking to t he children of friends or acquaintances.“Kids aren’t all raised the same,” agrees Professor Naomi White of Monash University.” But there is still an idea that they’re the property of the parent. We see our children as an extension of ourselves, so if you’re saying that my child is be having inappropriately, then that’s somehow a criticism of me.”In those circumstances, it’s difficult to know whether to approach the child directly or the parent first. There are two schools of thought.“I’d go to the child first,” says Andrew Fuller, author of Tricky Kids. Usually a quiet reminder that ’we don’t do that here’ is enough. Kids nave finely tuned antennae (直觉) for how to behave in different settings.”He points out bringing it up with the parent first may make them feel neglectful, which could cause problems. Of course, approaching the child first can bring its own headaches, too. This is why White recommends that you approach the parents first. Raise your concerns with the parents if they’re there and ask them to deal with it,” she says.Asked how to approach a parent in this situa tion, psychologist Meredith Fuller answers:”Explain your needs as well as stressing the importance of the friendship. Preface your remarks with something like: ’I know you’ll think I’m silly but in m y house I don’t want…’”When it comes to situations where you’re caring for another child, white is straightforward: “common sense must prevail. If things don’t go well, then have a chat.”There’re a couple of new grey areas. Physical punishment, once accepted from any adult, is no longer appropriate. “A new set of considerations has come to the fore as part of the debate about how we handle children.”For Andrew Fuller, the child-centric nature of our society has affected everyone:” The rules are different now from when today’s parents were growing up,” he says,“Adults are scared of saying: ’don’t swear’, or asking a child to stand up on a bus. They’re worried that there will be conflict if they point these things out –either from older children, or their parents.”He sees it as a loss of the sense of common public good and public courtesy (礼貌), and says that adults suffer form it as much as child.Meredith Fuller agrees: “A code of conduct is hard to create when you’re living in a world in which everyone is exhausted from overwork and lack of sleep, and a world in which nice people are perceived to finish last.”“it’s about what I’m doing and what I need,” Andrew Fuller says. ”the days when a kid came home from school and said, “I got into trouble”. And dad said, ‘you probably deserved it’. Are over. Now the par ents are charging up to the school to have a go at teachers.”This jumping to our children’s defense is part of what fuels the “walking on eggshells” feeling that surrounds our dealings with other people’s children. You know that if you remonstrate(劝诫) wit h the child, you’re going to have to deal with the parent. it’s admirable to be protective of our kids, but is it good?“Children have to learn to negotiate the world on their own, within reasonable boundaries,” White says. “I suspect that it’s only certain sectors of the population doing the running to the school –better –educated parents are probably more likely to be too involved.”White believes our notions of a more child-centred, it’s a way of talking about treating our children like commodities(商品). We’re centred on them but in ways that reflect positively on us. We treat them as objects whose appearance and achievements are something we can be proud of, rather than serve the best interests of the children.”One way over-worked, under-resourced parents show commitment to their children is to leap to their defence. Back at the park, Bianchi’s intervention(干预) on her son’s behalf ended in an undignified exchange of insulting words with the other boy’s mother. As Bianchi approached the park bench where sh e’d been sitting, other mums came up to her and congratulated her on taking a stand. “Apparently the boy had a longstanding reputation for bad behaviour and his mum for even worse behaviour if h e was challenged.”Andrew Fuller doesn’t believe that we should be afraid of dealing with other people’s kids. “look at kids that aren’t your own as a potential minefield,” he says. He recommends that we don’t stay silent over inappropriate behaviour, particularly wi th regular visitors.32. What did Stella Bianchi ex pect the young boy’s mother to do when she talked to him?A. make an apologyB. come over to interveneC. discipline her own boyD. take her own boy away33. Due to the child-centric nature of our society,A. parents are worried when their kids swear at themB. people think it improper to criticize kids in publicC. people are reluctant to point our kids’ wrongdoingsD. many conflicts arise between parents and their kids34. Now he has written a book to help young people achieve their own goals in life, called Be Amazing! An Inspiring Guide to Being Your Own Champion. The book is packed with stories from his cycling career and the lessons he learned along the way. Speaking to The Week Junior, Hoy says the book’s advice can apply to anything, whether it’s sport, the arts or science. When he was young, Hoy never thought he would have a career in cycling. “First of all, I wasn’t that good at it,” he says. Hoy thought that successful people were just certain to be great and were different from everyone else. But after growing up, Hoy realized that wasn’t true and he saw whatever can happen if you work hard at something you love. He won his first gold medal at the 2004 Olympics in Greece in a time trial event. In this event, the cyclists took it in turns to see who could go the fastest round a track.此卷只装订不密封班级 姓名 准考证号 考场号 座位号Before Hoy’s turn came, the world record had been broken three times. However, he focused on his own performance and won gold. Hoy said hearing his name followed by the words “Olympic champion” was truly magical. If Hoy could give his younger self a piece of advice, it would be, “Not everyone can win a gold medal, so there has to be more than that. There has to be enjoyment and fun at the heart of everything.”4. What is Chris Hoy’s main purpose of writing the book?A. To get young people to buy it.B. To make the young learn how to cycle.C. It might be hard to imagine such a cat, let alone a spaceship. But NASA is trying to make a spaceship that is much better than other ships. The spacecraft has to be as light as it can be. Weight costs money! A new discovery might allow spacecraft to be lighter. A new material called a “carbon nanotube”(碳纳米管) might be the answer to the weight problem of building a super spaceship. This material is 600 times stronger than steel. One of the big problems with space travel is space radiation(辐射). In space, astronauts need protection against harmful rays. You might think that the metal on a spaceship is the answer. But, metals are the worst for protecting against very dangerous space rays. These rays are made of little pieces called ions(离子). When the ions hit metals at very high speed, they can break an atom and cause another type of ray to form. These new rays can be worse than the radiation the metal skins were supposed to stop. Thus, it is very important to block these rays. But we could use carbon nanotubes to make the skins of spacecraft. Things that are light in weight seem to work the best against these ions. The rays are stopped outside the spacecraft and new rays aren’t made.In addition, our super spaceship needs to be able to repair itself. Humans can feel the smallest pinpricks(针刺) because of tiny sensors that send signals to our brains. Tiny sensors like ours could be built in the new ships. Each sensor could send messages to the computer “brain” of the spacecraft. If something needed to be fixed, the computer could tell the ship to do it.Just as amazing as a car would be to someone 200 years ago, our nanotube spaceship might seem to us. We might actually make the spacecraft of tomorrow, using the technology of today.8. What are the features of carbon nanotubes?A. Light and strong.B. Thin and radioactive.C. Self-repairing and weightless.D. Sensitive and protective.9. Which of the following statements is true?A. Space radiation can’t be blocked at all.B. Space rays can break ions to form new rays.C. Carbon nanotubes can prevent radiation effectively.D. Metal skins aren’t a good choice for their strength.10. Why will tiny sensors be built into the new spaceship?A. Humans can feel the smallest pinpricks.B. The computer “brain” can repair itself.C. Signals can be sent to humans’ brains.D. The computer can be informed of what to repair.11. What’s the best title of the passage?A. A New Discovery in SpaceB. NASA Made a BreakthroughC. Nanotubes Help to Repair SpacecraftD. NASA’s Attempt to Make a Super SpaceshipDThere are so many choices when you go shopping. You have to check the sell-by dates so that you know how long you can store and use the food you are purchasing. But do you know that the best sell-by dates on food packaging don’t really tell you if the food is safe to eat. The food may not last as long as it says if it isn’t stored correctly at any point of the distribution chain. Now there is food packaging that can detect and change colors if the food has gone bad. Each American wastes 103 pounds of spoiled food out of the refrigerator every year. The new smart packaging from Primitives Biodesign — a new company that operates out of a lab at Indibio, a biotech accelerator in San Francisco — can help to reduce this huge waste of food. The basic material that doesn’t contain sensing material is made from algae and can block oxygen more effectively than regular film, so the food stays fresher for a longer time. Since it is made from a natural substance, it can also break down in nature.Making the film smart is the thorny part. Luckily, the team managed to use a process that is like the way nature responds to changes in the environment. The mechanism responds like the way flowers emit compounds to change colors.“It could be supplement packaging that indicate when it’s been tampered with by changing color to tell you that it's no ledger safe,” says Kan. She explained that the new packaging can be used on food products to fell if the food has turned bad before someone has to smell or taste it.The company has proven in lab tests that the technology works and now they are working on how to develop commercial uses for it. The added safety features will come out later. Helping to control food waste in products like meat or cheese which have high greenhouse gas emissions will also help to reduce climate change.12. What can we infer from paragraph 2?A. Storing food properly is very important.B. The color of food packaging is not clear.C. Regular food packaging is of little value.D. It’s not hard to control distribution chains.13. What does the word “thorny” underlined in paragraph 5 probably mean?A. Changeable.B. Interesting.C. Natural.D. Difficult.14. What can we say about the new food packaging?A. It is too thin to block oxygen.B. It is really good for the environment.C. It is perfect for commercial uses.D. It is sensitive to pleasant smells.15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. Smart Packaging Tells If Food Is Safe to EatB. Sensing Materials Indicate the Color of FoodC. A Great Team Is Concerned With Food SafetyD. ADo you want a bit of an adventure? Would you like to discover all the corners of the UK,or travel abroad?Maybe you have never tried the motorhome lifestyle before.Well, read this article and you will know why a motorhome is a good choice.Nothing is better than a motorhome. It has so many uses that it is considered the most versatile vehicle and it is also very comfortable. If you are thinking about hiring a motorhome this summer, then the best choice is to book it early, especially if you are considering the school holidays. The motorhome hire service is very seasonal and motorhome hire companies will never have extra vehicles available in the summer months. There are a lot of companies throughout the UK,and some of the big ones have motorhomes spread all over the country. At present, the largest network for motorhome hire is provided by Motorhome which is based in Cambridge. If you are in the UK,you may phone 08006128719 for details of its motorhome hireinformation.Motorhome has a network of over 500 vehicles all over England,Scotland and Wales. Most people wishing to hire a motorhome are families that are looking for an alternative to a European package holiday, especially as flying now has become more expensive, and is considered to be environmentally unfriendly. There is no doubt that the idea of no-fly holidays is going to become more popular as fewer people think it is safe to fly. This explains why more and more people are choosing to hire a motorhome for their holidays.【文章大意】本文是一篇说明文。
