2015 年职称英语考试新增卫生类 5 篇文章汇总(全)1、卫生A 阅读判断新增文章第十二篇Inquest told of hospital errorA HOSPITAL error left a dying man on the wrong ward for two days as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) ravaged his body, an inquest heard. Stephen Melvin Newbold suffered massive brain damage when a blood clot formed in his veins. Now his families are considering legal action against York Hospital, saying that his death was “un timely and unnecessar y”.Mr Newbold, a 52-year-old maintenance worker, went to York Hospital on November 3 complaining of a swollen right foot. He should have been sent to a surgical ward where he would have been treated with1 Fragmin, a drug which counters the effects of DVT. However, hospital staff wrongly admitted him to2 an orthopedic ward, where he stayed for two days, before finally being transferred to the care of a consultant vascular surgeon. Twenty-four hours later, on November 6, doctors decided they would have to operate to remove his leg below the knee. The operation went ahead on November lO,but two days later Mr Newbold suffered a cardiac arrest. A scan revealed he had had a pulmonary embolism,a condition related to DVT. Mr. Newbold suffered brain damage and died in the hospital on November 16.Giving evidence, the surgeon said he could not explain why Mr Newbold had been admitted to an orthopedic ward where it was not policy to administer Fragmin. He did not know why his medical team had not given Mr. Newbold the drug later.York coroner Donald Coverdale said, …From November 3 until the day of the operation, no Fragmin was given to Mr Newbold. Lf he had been admitted to a consultant vascular surgeon‟s care from day one, it is clear that Fragmin would have been prescribed. Fragmin reduces the risk of DVT, but does not eliminate it. It is impossible to say whether Mr Newbold would have suffered this DVT if he had received the Fragmin.‟He recorded a verdict of death by misadventure.Kim Daniells, Mr Newbold‟s family‟s lawyer, said, … The family hope that the hospital will learn from the errors, and that no other families will have to suffer in the future. …A spokeswoman for York Hospital‟s NHS Trust said, … We would like to extend our sincere sympathies to the family of Stephen Newbold during this difficult time.‟词汇:ward n. 同情注释:1.be treated with...被用......药物进行治疗2.be admitted to...被收容至,被移送至(本文中是“被送至病房”)练习:1.The patient was admitted with an injured foot.A. For many people, the **mute (通勤) to work is a source of frustration. 40% of the people in the survey have suffered from road rage while stuck in traffic on the way to work. The cost of public transport is also a serious problem. Many people think the price of underground and bus travel is too high and that they have to devote more than 10% of their salary to transport costs. The general cost of living in cities is another problem. The high property prices in most big cities put buying a property out of reach of most first-time buyers. Many young people are priced out of the housing market, and have to take in lodgers to make ends meet, or rent over-priced flats miles away from the city centre. In London, for instance, the price of buying even a one-bedroom flat is so prohibitive that many have given up even considering putting money aside for a deposit.Another issue facing people who live in cities is rising crime. Crime rates have rocketed in many big cities, and many say there are several dangerous no-go areas in their city. Fear of crime is on the increase— street crimes, such as mugging and assault, are now **mon—and many are afraid of going out at night alone. Many were also concerned by the lack of green spaces and play facilities for children. Most major conurbations (有卫星城的大都市) surveyed have a far smaller number of parks and gardens than a generation ago. Planning permission seems to have been given for an ever-greater number of supermarkets, office developments and apartments on sites where there were previously green spaces. Many of the respondents in the survey said they felt stressed and suffocated (窒息)in the city, a problem which is compounded by pollution. And finally, the majority of people in the survey were fed up with the constant noise pollution—the roar of traffic, the sound of loud music blaring (发刺耳声) out of a neighbour's window, and the constant sound of activity. It is not surprising, then, that the levels of stress-related illnesses among people who live in cities are higher than ever before. Big cities, once a mecca (朝拜的地方) for ambitious people seeking fame and fortune, are now less and less popular among people of all ages. Perhaps the 21 st century is set to be the century of the small town and the countryside.16. Most people in the survey who live in big cities would like to move somewhere smaller.A. Right B. Wrong C. Not mentioned17. Many people in the survey think public transport is reasonably priced.A. Right B. Wrong C. Not mentioned18. It is difficult to buy a flat in London because of the cost.A. Right B. Wrong C. Not mentioned19. The crime rate has remained stable in recent years.A. Right B. Wrong C. Not mentioned20. There are fewer green areas in cities than there used to be.A. Right B. Wrong C. Not mentioned21. London has had some success in reducing pollution.A. Right B. Wrong C. Not mentioned22. Noise pollution is seen as a big problem by most people in the survey.A. Right B. Wrong C. Not mentioned第3部分:概括大意与完成句子Teaching Is "One of the Least Popular Jobs in the UK" 1 The UK government has just published a report on the future of secondary-school teaching (pupils aged 11-16), and the conclusion of the report is that many secondary schools now face great difficulties in finding people who want to be teachers. Since the 1980s, the number of graduates who say they would "seriously consider" teaching as a career has fallen sharply, from 64% in 1982 to just 17% today. The report suggests that urgent action needs to be taken in order to encourage more intelligent young graduates into teaching.2 The main drawback of secondary teaching, according to the report, is the low salary. Earnings in teaching are much lower than in many other jobs, and this means that fewer and fewer young people decide to be teachers. Joanne Manners, 24, is a good example : "I graduated in maths last year, and I was thinking of doing a teacher-training course to become a mathsteacher—but when I looked into the details, it became clear that teaching isn't a very lucrative (赚钱的) job these days. I saw I could earn twice as much if I worked in marketing or advertising, and so I decided not to become a teacher. "3 It's not just about the money, however. The survey concluded that another reason why people don' t want to be teachers is that some teenagers behave very badly in school. A lot of schools have problems with discipline, and it seems clear that children do not have the same respect for teachers as in the past. Here's the view of Dave Hallam, an accountant from London: "I think parents are to blame. They should have stricter rules with their children at home and also teach their children to have more respect for teachers. "4 "I love teaching: it's my passion. I've been a secondary-school teacher of Spanish for ten years now, and although it's a very demanding job, it's very satisfying. When I see my students passing their Spanish exams, or singing along to Spanish pop songs, it makes me feel so proud," says Brian Jones, who works in a secondary school in London. So what does he think the government should do to encourage more people to become teachers? "My view is that the government should reduce the burden of work on teachers. I find that I always have too much work to do. "5 The report is clear that the problem of teacher shortage is a very serious one. It says that the government should raise teachers' pay significantly, to catch up with workers in other professions. It also suggests that the government could launch a nationwide publicity campaign, with some advertisements on TV and in the newspapers, to show the positive sides of teaching to young people. Another solution could be to set a maximum number of hours per week that teachers can work, in order to reduce stress on teachers. "Hopefully," the report concludes, "these solutions can improve the poor image of secondary teaching, and increase the number of young people who want to become teachers in the future."23. Paragraph 1 ______A. A report on teacher shortage B. Improvement of children behaviour C. Heavy workload on teachers D. The problem of low salary E. A nationwide publicity campaign F. Students' bad behaviour and lack of discipline24. Paragraph 2 ______25. Paragraph 3 ______26. Paragraph 4 ______27. More and more young people are held back from teaching ______.A. discipline problems B. their childhood memories C. their stress D. more training E. because of its low pay F. its benefits28. Parents are encouraged to back the teacher up when there are ______.29. The government should reduce the workload on teachers to ease ______.30. 请根据短文内容,为每题确定1个最佳选项。
第一篇What’s killing the BatsFirst it was bees. Now it is bats. Biologists in America are working hard to discover the cause of the mysterious deaths of tens of thousands of bats in the northeastern part of the country. Most of the bats affected are the common little brown bats (Myotis lucifiigus,)but other species, such as the long-eared bat, the small-footed bat,the eastern pipistrelle, and the Indiana bat have also been affected. In some caves, more than 90 percent of the bat populations have died. One possibility is disease. A white fungus (真菌)known as fusarium has been found on the noses of both living and dead bats. However, scientists don’t know if the fungus is the primary cause of death, a secondary cause of death,or not a cause at all, but the result of some other conditions.Another possible cause is a lack of food. For example, bats typically eat a large number of moths (蛾),and in some states such as New York, the number of moths has been declining in recent years. If bats can’t eat enough food, they starve to death.Still other scientists believe that global wanning is to blame. Warmer temperatures in recent years have been walking up hibernating (冬目民)bats earlier than usual. If bats break their hibernation at the wrong time, they might not find their expected food sources. The weather might also turn cold again and weaken or kill the bats.Scientists might not agree on the causes of the bat die-off,but they do agree on the consequences. Bats are an important predator of mosquitoes; a single brown bat can eat 1,000 or more insects in an hour. They also eat beetles and other insects that damage plant crops. If there aren’t enough bats, damage will be great from the insects they eat while bats live a long time for their size---the little brown bat can live for more than 30 years---a female bat has only one baby per year, so bat populations grow slowly. Many bat species in the United States are already protected or endangered. How can you help? Do not disturb sleeping or nesting bats. If you discover bats that seem to be sick or that are dead, contact your lock Fish&Wildlife Department with the details. However, be careful not to touch the animals.29. what is the main idea of this passage?A. All species of bats in North America are dying.B. Scientists already know the cause of the deaths of batsC. The bat deaths are a serious problemD. There are many possible causes of the deaths of bats.30. What does the first sentence in Paragraph 1 mean?A. Bees have been dying mysteriouslyB. The first article on the website is about bees.C. Bees usually die before batsD. It was bees that caused the deaths of bats.31. The word “pipistrelle” in Paragraph I refers toA. a kind of ftmgusB. an area in the U.S.C. a special caveD. a kind of bat32. The “moths” in Paragraph 3 are taken as an example ofA. disease that kill batsB. insects that bats eatC. animals that have diseasesD. bat species that are starving to death33. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?A. to get people to stop killing batsB. to hire workers for the Fish&Wildlife DepartmentC. to ask people not to touch dead batsD. to tell the public how to help bats.第二篇Is There a Way to Keep Britain’s Economy Growing? In today’s knowledge economy, nations survive on the things they do best. Japanese design electronics while Germens export engineering techniques. The French serve the best food and Americans make computers.Britain specializes in the gift of talking. The nation doesn't manufacture much of anything. But it has lawyers, stylists and business consultants who earn their living from talk, talk and more talk. The World Foundation think tank1 says the UKfs four iconic jobs today are not scientists, engineers, teachers and nurses. Instead, they're hairdressers, celebrities, management consultants and managers. But can all this talking keep the British economy going? The British government thinks it can.Although the country’s trade deficit was more than £ 60 billion in 2006,UK's largest in the postwar period, officials say the country has nothing to worry about. In fact, Britain does have a world-class pharmaceutical industry, and it still makes a small sum from selling arms abroad. It also trades services —accountancy, insurance, banking and advertising. The government believes Britain is on the cutting edge2 of the knowledge economy. After all, the country of Shakespeare andWordsworth has a literary tradition of which to be proud. Rock “n” roll3 is an English language medium, and there are billions to be made by their cutting-edge bands. In other words, the creative economy has plenty of strength to carry the British economy. However, creative industries account for only about 4 percent of UICs exports of goods and services. The industries are finding it hard to make a profit, according to a report of the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts. The report shows only 38 percent of British companies were engaged in "innovation activities' 3 percentage points below the EU average and well below Germany (61 percent) and Sweden (47 percent). In fact,it might be better to call Britain a nservantM economy — there are at least 4 million people "in service". The majority of the population are employed by the rich to cook, clean, and take care of their children. Many graduates are even doing menial jobs for which they do not need a degree. Most employment growth has been, and will continue to be, at the low-skill end of the service sector 一in shops, bars, hotels, domestic service and in nursing and care homes.34. According to the World Foundation think tank, one of the iconic jobs in Britain today isA. law makersB. home servantsC. school teachersD. business consultants.35. The phrase “the cutting edge” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning toA. the most popularB. the mos丈 advancedC. the most politicalD. the proudest36. The officials are not worried about the trade deficit in 2006,because they believeA. Britain is on the cutting edge of the knowledge economy.B. Britain is home to the largest pharmaceutical industry in the world.C. the literary tradition of Britain will help make billions of pounds.D. the world economy is strong enough to carry the British economy.37. Which of the following is true about the creative industries in Britain?A. They are not doing as well as those in other European nations.B. They contribute a lot to the country’s trade d eficit.C. They can’t make a profit out of their innovative activities.D. They make Britain on the cutting edge of the knowledge economy.38. It can be inferred from the passage thatA. the gift of talking can keep the British economy growing.B. the British economy is the least innovative one in the EU.C. the British government is over-confident in its economy.D. being a servant to the rich is one of the best jobs in Britain.第三篇 The Sandwich GenerationToday people often look forward to their middle age as a time when they will be able to take things easier. After their children are grown, they expect to enjoy the life they have worked hard to create. However the reality is often very different. In middle age, many people discover that they have two ongoing responsibilities1: one is to look after their aging parents, and the other is to help their young adult children deal with the pressures of life. Around the world, there are millions of people who are “sandwiched” in between the older and the younger generations. Sometimes there may be two or three generations living in the same household — a situation that is common in many Asian countries and in some parts of Europe. In other cases, a couple may be taking care of parents and children, but they do not live with them. There are two important reasons for the rise of the sandwich generation. First, people are living longer than they used to. In the early nineteenth century, the average life expectancy for adults in the United States, for example, was about 40,whereas today people live to an average age of 75. Therefore, children are taking care of their parents over a longer period of time. The second reason is that these days, young adults often live with their parents for a longer time than they did in the past. This is often for financial reasons. It’s also more common for today’s young adults to return home during or after college if they need financial or emotional support.Young adults feel sandwiched between their financial responsibilities and their desire to enjoy life. They may have to cover expenses that their parents cannot. They may have to manage their parents’ financial and legal affairs. They may have to prepare for their parents’ future needs, such as special medical care or a move to a nursing home. This can be a traumatic experience for everyone.Caring for adult children presents challenges as well, and caregivers have to resolve important questions; How canfinancial responsibilities be shared among members of the household? How can household chores be shared? What is the best way to ensure everyone’s privacy? Successfully coping with these issues can avoid a lot of stress for the whole family. The financial and emotional pressures on the sandwich generation can be overwhelming. However, this time in life also has its rewards. It can be a time to rediscover the special qualities of one’s parents or children. It can also provide a valuable opportunity to spend more time with them. However,in order to survive this difficult period in their lives, the members of the sandwich generation must remember that they also need to pay attention to their own needs and look after the quality of their own lives. They can’t be totally selfless.39. According to the first paragraph, many people in middle ageA. are able to take things easier when their children are grown.B. can’t enjoy their life as they have expectedC. can’t enjoy their life because they haven’t worked hard enough.D. are facing great pressure from their work.40. Which is true about the sandwich generation?A. Their parents are unable to take care of themselves.B. Their parents are often facing the pressures of life.C. They are tom between the responsibilities for their parents and children.D. They all have to live with their parents and children.41. Why do some young adults choose to live with their parents these days?A. They are too young to be independent from their parents.B. They want to help their parents to take care of their aging grandparents.C. They need support from their parents to deal with their financial problems.D. They are more emotional than the young adults in the past.42. The sandwich generation face the following challenges EXCEPTA. sharing household choresB . ensuring everyone,s privacyC. shouldering the financial responsibilities of the householdD. determining who is the caregiver of the family43. To survive the difficult period in their lives, the sandwich generation need toA. be totally selflessB. consider their own wellbeingC. rediscover the merits of their childrenD. value the time spent with their parents.下载文档。

2015职称英语卫生A新增文章和答案
第十二篇 The Enemy WithinAllergy has become more and more common over the last 30 years. Now one-third of us are affected by allergy at some point in our lives and half of these sufferers are children. In the UK, three million people suffer from asthma, and five per cent of children suffer from food allergy.Allergy is a reaction that occurs when the immune system has a strange and unnecessary reaction to a substance which is normally harmless, such as pollen or peanuts. ____1____ To defend your body against an attacker, the immune system remembers these dangerous micro-organisms and attacks them if it meets them again. This work is done by antibodies. The immune system in allergy sufferers makes antibodies against harmless substances, because it mistakenly believes them to be dangerous. An allergic reaction may not happen the first time a sufferer meets an allergen (the substance causing the reaction, such as pollen, milk or strawberries). Sometimes people can eat nuts for years and then suddenly become allergic to them. What has happened is that the immune system has now decided the substance is dangerous and has made an allergy antibody. This antibody then attaches itself to cells, which contain histamine. ____2____ As they do that, the surface of the cells is broken, and histamine is released. The histamine and other chemicals inflame the tissues. This leads to the symptoms of allergy, such as swelling, rashes, sneezing, sore eyes and breathlessness. Anaphylaxis is the most severe allergic reaction of all and is most often triggered by wasp or bee stings or peanuts. This must be treated immediately.____3____ Some people are born with the ability to make lots of allergy antibodies, and they are more likely to develop allergies and allergic disorders such as hay fever and asthma.____4____ We eat more processed foods, with a wide range of additives and colourings; more and more people have central heating and double glazing, making our houses warmer and less draughty-an ideal environment to breed the house dust mite. There may also be a link between allergies and antibiotics. At one time our immune systems were kept busy fighting off disease and trying to win the battle for health, but antibiotics have reduced the amount of work our immune systems have to do. Now experts think they may direct spare energy to harmless substances such as strawberries. ____5____A good deal of research is being devoted to finding a cure for allergies. Sufferers may be given medicine to control symptoms, and theymay also be offered tests to find out what substances trigger an allergic reaction so that they can avoid contact with these in future. 忍受^的折磨2.be devoted to sth. ...全身心投入于练习:A. After Europeans “discovered”America in the fifteenth century, them ysterious New World became for many people a genuine hope of a new life, an escape from poverty and persecution, a chance to start again. We can say that,as nation, America begins with that hope. When, however, does American literature begin?American literature begins with American experiences. Long before the firstcolonists arrived, before Christopher Columbus, before the Northmen who “found”America about the year 1,000, Native Americans lived here. Each tribe’s literature was tightly woven into the fabric of daily life and reflected the unmistakably American experience of lining with the land. Another kind of experience, one filled with fear and excitement, found its expression in the reports that Columbus and other explorers sent home in Spain, French and English. In addition, the journals of the people who livedand died in the New England wilderness tell unforgettable tales of hard and sometimes heartbreaking experiences of those early years.Experience, then, is the key to early American literature. The New World provided a great variety of experiences, and these experiences demanded a wide variety of expressions by an even wider variety of early American writers. These writers, included John Smith, whospent only two-and- a-half years on the American continent. They included Jonathan Edwards and William Byrd, who thought of themselves as British subjects, never suspecting a revolution that would create a United States of America with a literature of its own. American Indians, explorers, Puritan ministers, frontier wives, plantation owner — they are all the creators of the first American literature.1.2015年职称英语(综合A)考试真题带答案2.

1 You are likely aware that several countries in West Africa are battling an Ebola outbreak.Ebola is a dangerous and often lethal viral infection.Scientists believe that humans contracted the virus by eating the meat of rare animals. It is now believed that bats are the primary carries of the virus.2 To date, there are only three major countries in West Africa experiencing a major outbreak: Sierra Leone,Liberia and Guinea. However, other countries such as Nigeria have reported confirmed cases of Ebola within their borders.3 Unless you recently visited one of the three affected West countries you risk of contracting the virus is virtually zero.Unlike other recent airborne virus outbreaks like SARS,the Ebola virus can only be spread through direct contact with an infectedperson.Specifically,Ebola is spread through contact with body fluids.Though, the virus is transmittable, only an infected person exhibiting symptoms is communicable.4 The signs and symptoms of Ebola are non-specific and patients typically exhibit them after a week of contracting thevirus.Symptoms may appear as early as two days or as late as three weeks after initial infection.Symptoms include disgust, weakness and stomach pain.More uncommon symptoms include chest pain, bleeding and sore throat.5 Ebola is devastating because of its ability to attack and replicate in every organ of the body. This causes an overstimulation of the body’s inflammatory response, causing the flu-like symptoms. The virus also causes bleeding and impairs the body's normal clotting mechanism (凝血机制),making bleeding even more severe.Loss of blood volume and decreased organ perfusion (器官灌注)ultimately lead to organ failure and death.6 The current outbreak is the deadliest viral outbreak in over 35 years. While diseases such as the malaria (疟疾) are far more communicable,Ebola is one of the world’s most fatal viral infections.Ebola's fatality rate exceeds that of SARS.23.paragraph 2_______24.paragraph 3_______25.paragraph 4_______26.paragraph 5_______A.Am I at risk ofcontracting the virus?B.is the currentoutbreak the deadliest?C.How do know ifhave contracted the virus?D.What areas arecurrently affected?E.What exactlydoes Ebola do to the body?F.What caused theEbola outbreak?27.The initialEbola outbreak was found in_______.28.The differencebetween SARS and Ebola viruses lies in_______.29.The symptoms ofthe patients after being infected may first appear_______.30.The Ebola virustransmits by contact with_______.A.infected bodyfluidsB.against theoutbreak severityC.the mode oftransmissionD.the initialdays of being infectedE.three countriesin West AfricaF.within a widerange of days2015职称英语考试卫生A补全短文真题2015年职称英语考试卫生A补全短文来自于卫生教材阅读理解第37篇Hypertension Drugs Found to Cut Risk of Stroke。

职称英语卫生类A级真题及答案(3)
职称英语卫生类A级真题及答案(3)35. The word “sustainable”in the last paragraph is closest in meaning toA. continuableB. affordableC. availableD. Persistent答案:ABACAFirst Self-contained Heart Implanted 【首例整套人工心脏移植】A patient on the brink of death has received the world’s first self-contained artificial heart—a battery-powered device about the size of a softball that runs without the need for wires, tubes or hoses sticking out of the chest. Two surgeons from the University of Louisville implanted the titanium and plastic pump during a sever-hour operation at Jewish Hospital Monday. The hospital said the patient was “awake and responsive” Tuesday and resting comfortably. It refused to release personal details. The patient had been expected to die within a month without the operation, and doctors said they expected the artificial heart to extend the person’s life by only a month. But the device is considered a major step t oward improving the patient’s quality of life. The new pump, called AbioCor, is also a technological leap from the mechanical hearts used in the 1980s, which were attached by wires and tubes to bulky machinery outside the body. The most famous of those, the Jarvic-7, used air as a pumping device and was attached to an apparatus about the size of a washing machine.“I think it’s potentially a major step forward in the artificial heart development,” said Dr. David Faxon, president of the American heart Association. However, he said the dream of an implantable, permanent artificial heart is not yet a reality: “This is obviously an experimental device whose long-term success has to be demonstrated.” Only about half of the 4,200 Americans on a waiting list for donor hearts received them last year, and most of the rest died. Some doctors, including Robert Higgins, chairman of cardiology at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, said artificial hearts are unlikely to replace donor hears.“A donor heart in a good transplant can last 15 to 30 years,” he said. “It’s going to be hard to replace that with a machine.”The AbilCor has a 2-pound pumping unit, and electronic controls that adjust the pumping speed based on the body’s needs. It is powered by a small battery pack worn outside the body that transmits current through the skin.36. 前两段告诉Self-contained artificial heartA. was made of titanium and pumpB. had brought the patient to the brink of deathC. did not need to get power from outside the bodyD. was invented by two surgeous from university of Louisville37. 病人接收 the first self-contained heartA. could not afford a donor heartB. was said to be in a good condition the next day after the operationC. died two month’s after the heart implantationD. was reluctant to release his or her personal information38. 第四段中the Jarvic-7 isA. the most expensive mechanical heartB. a mechanical heart used in the 1980sC. as advanced as A biocorD. replacing A biocor39. 通过Dr. David Faxon, the self-contained heart isA. a milestone in the artificial heart developmentB. still in the experimental stageC. an implantable, permanent artificial heartD. unavailable to all those Americans waiting for donor hearts40.从文章推断出donor heartA. saved the lives of about 2100 Americans the year before the reportB. will be replaced by self-contained artificial hearts sooner or laterC. are more popular and cheaper than self-contained artificial heartsD. can help patients survive less than 15 years if they are in good transplant.答案:ABBBA五、补全短文Wrongly Convicted Man and His Accuser Tell Their StoryNEW YORK,NY, January 5,2010. St.Martin’s Press has announced the release of the paperback edition of Picking Cotton, a remarkable true story of what novelist John Grisham calls an “account of violence, rage, redemption(救赎),and, ultimately forgiveness.”The story began in 1987, in Burlington, North Carolina, with the rape of a young while college student named Jennifer Thompson. During her ordeal, Thompson swore to herself that she would never forget the face of her rapist, a man who climbedthrough the window of her apartment and assaulted her brutally._During the attack, she made an effort to memorize eveery detail of his face, looking for scars, tattoos(纹身),or other identifying marks.(46)When the police asked her if she could identify the assilant(袭击者)from a book of mug shots, she picked one that she was sure was correct, and later she identified the same man in a lineup.Based on her convincing eyewithness testimony, a 22-year-old black man named Ronald Cotton was sentenced to prison for two life terms. Cotton’s lawyer appealed the decision, and by the time of the appeals hearing, evidence had come to light suggesting that the real rapist might have been a man who looked very like Cotton, an imprisoned criminal named Bobby Poole.Another trial was held.(47)Jennifer Thompson looked at both men face to face, and once again said that Ronald Cotton was the one who raped her.Eleven years later, DNA evidence completely exonerated(证明……清白)Cotton and just as unequivocally(明确地) convicted Poole, who confessed to the crime. Thompson was shocked and devastated.(48) “The man I was so sure I had never seen in my life was the man who was inches from my throat, who raped me, who hurt me, who took my spirit away, who robbed me of my soul,” she wrote. “And the man I had identified so surely on so many occasions was absolutely innocent.”_Jennifer Thompson decided to meet Cotton and apologize to him personally.(49) Remarkably both were able to put this tragedy behind them, overcome the racial barrier that divided them, and write a book, which they have subtitled “Our memoir of injustice and redemption.”Nevertheless, Thompson says, she still lives “with constantpain that my profound mistake cost him so dearly_I cannot begin to imagine what would have happened had my mistaken identification occurred in a capital case_(50)”A. Jennifer Thompson decided to meet Cotton and apologize to him personally.B. Many criminals are sent to prison on the basis of accurate testimony by eyewithnesses.C. I cannot begin to imagine what would have happened had my mistaken identification occurred in a capital caseD. Another trial was held.E. Thompson was shocked and devastated.F. During the attack, she made an effort to memorize eveery detail of his face, looking for scars, tattoos(纹身),or other identifying marks.答案:FDEAC。

第一篇Young Adults Who Exercise Get Higher IQ ScoresYoung adults who are fit have a higher IQ and are more likely to go on to university ,reveals a major new study carried out at the Sahlgrenska Academy and Sahlgrenska University Hospital. The results were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science( PNAS). The study involved l. 2 million Swedish men doing military service who were born between 1950 and 1976. The research group analyzed the results of both physical and IQ tests the youngesters took right after they started serving the army. The study shows a clear link between good physical fitness and better results for the IQ test. The strongest links are for logical thinking and verbal comprehension. But it is only fitness that plays a role in the results for the IQ test, and not strength. "Being fit means that you also have good heart and lung capacity and that your brain gets plenty of oxygen, " says Michael Nilsson, professor at the Sahlgrenska Academy and chief physician at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital. "This may be one of the reasons why we can see a clear link with fitness, but not with muscular strength. We are also seeing that there are growth factors that are important. "By analyzing data for twins, the researchers have been able to determine that it is primarily environmental factors 'and not genes that explain the link between fitness and a higher IQ."We have also shown that those youngsters who improve their physical fitness between the ages of 15 and 18 increase their cognitive performance," says Maria Aberg, researcher at the Sahlgrenska Academy and physician at Aby health center. "This being the case, physical education is a subject that has an important place in schools, and is an absolute must if we want to do well in math and other theoretical subjects. "The researchers have also compared the results from fitness tests during national service with the socio-economic status of the men later in life. Those who were fit at 18 were more likely to go into higher education, and many secured more qualified jobs.31 The researchers in this study come fromA Aby health centre.B the Swedish army.C the National Academy of Science.32 Which of the following is an indication of physical fitness?A Brain size.B Good lung capacity.C Clear logical thinking.D Muscular strength.33 By enhancing physical fitness, one could improve the following EXCEPTA emotional behavior.B cognitive performance.C heart capacity.D verbal comprehension.34 The study findings include the following EXCEPT thatA growth factors are significant for a person's IQ.B young adults who are fit get higher scores in IQ tests.C young people who are muscular and strong have a higher IQ.D youngsters who are fit will more likely get college education.35 The word "secured" in the last paragraph is closest in meaning toA insured.B assured.C obtained.D studied第二篇Social Anxiety DisorderSocial anxiety disorder prevents some 15 million Americans from leading normal social and romantic lives, a new survey finds. The disorder leaves many isolated, ashamed (害羞的) and often misdiagnosed. Thirty-six percent of those with social anxiety disorder have symptoms for 10 years or more before seeking help, the Anxiety Disorders Association of America reports." Social anxiety disorder is when somebody has an intense, persistent and irrational fear of social or performance situations," Jerilyn Ross, the Association's president and CEO,said during a teleconference Wednesday."The condition causes people to avoid common, everyday situations and even other people for fear of being judged or criticized or humiliated or embarrassing themselves ,"Ross said.Social anxiety disorder can interfere with daily routines and job performance, Ross noted. "It also makes it very difficult for people to develop friendships and romantic partnerships," she said.People with this disorder recognize their fear is excessive andirrational, Ross noted."But they feel powerless to do anything about it," she said.Social anxiety disorder can start in the early teens, Dr. Mark H. Pollack, director of the Center for Anxiety and Traumatic (心灵创伤的`) Stress Disorders and a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, said during the teleconference."This is a disorder that starts affecting people early on," Pollack said. "The typical age of onset (开始) is early adolescence, age 12 0r 13, and many individuals report a history of anxiety dating back to earlier childhood. "The disorder also has physical symptoms, including heart palpitations (心陲) , feelings that their throat will close up, sweating, blushing, faintness, trembling and stammering,Ross said.Among people with the disorder, 75 percent said the condition affected their ability to do normal activities. In addition, 69 percent said they didn't want people to think they were crazy, and 58 percent said they were embarrassed by their condition, Ross said. However, when the condition was diagnosed and treated, many reported improvement in their lives. In fact, 59 percent who were receiving treatment said that treatment had a positive effect on their ability to have a romantic relationship. In addition, 39 percent who had received treatment said knowing that treatment could be successful aided their decision to get help, Ross noted.36 Which of the following is NOT true of the people with social anxiety disorder?A They find it difficult to make friends.B They are often isolated and ashamed.C They frequently fail to get timely treatmentD They tend to criticize other people.37 People with the disorder think that their fear isA justified.B beneficial.C controllableD beyond controlually the disorder starts to affect people whenA they fall in love.B they begin to work.C they get married.D they are in their early teens.39.All the following are likely symptoms of the disorder EXCEPTA heart palpitations.B sweating.C sore throat.D blushing.40.The last paragraph indicates that treatment of the disorderA had no positive effect on those affected.B was unavailable to those affected.C was often rejected by those affected.D could improve the life of those affected.第三篇Ear BreakthroughNew research published in the journal Current Biology has added significantly to our understanding of how the ear works, giving hope to millions of deaf and hard of hearing people. The latest research, conducted by Dr.Jorg T.Albert, a Deafness Research UK research fellow at the UCL Ear Institute, together with scientists at the University of Cologne, shows that fruit flies have ears which mechanically amplify sound signals in a remarkably similar way to the sensory (感觉的 ) cells found in the inner ear of vertebrates (脊椎动物) including humans. The finding means that the wealth of genetic techniques already available tostudy the fruit fly can now be used to target how the ear works.Dr. Albert says, "The biophysical parallels between the ways both fruit flies and humans convert sound into nerve signals are truly amazing. We may be allowed to hope that these mechanistic (机械学的) similarities extend further down to the genes and molecules thatbring about hearing. But even if it finally should turn out that hearing in fruit flies relies on afferent molecules than does hearing in humans, the little fruit fly can help us find answers to some key questions of hearing research and-what is sometimes even more important- The work is welcomed by Deafness Research UK, the country's only medical research charity for deaf people. Vivienne Michael, chief executive of Deafness Research UK, says, ";This is an important advance that paves the way toward a clear understanding of the genetics of deafness. The charity will continue to support cutting-edge (尖端的) research through its Fellowship programme at the UCL Ear Institute and at other top-,research centers in the UK to achieve our goal of securing radicalimprovements in the prevention, diagnosis and treatments of all forms of hearing impairment. One-third of parents lack facts about child developmentOne-third of parents of babies have a surprisingly low knowledge of child development, including basic concepts about what their children should know or how they should act, a new study finds. For instance, the study found that many parents don't know that 1-year-olds can't tell the difference between right and wrong, and often don't cooperate or share when playing with other children. The results are surprising because the parents who took part in the survey had young children, said lead author Dr.Heather Paradis, a pediatric fellow at the University of Rochester Medical Center, in New York."They were watching or had just watched their kids go through this development, and they were probably the most knowledgeable of anybody."Paradis and her colleagues examined the results of a survey of parents -- 98.6 percent of whom were mothers -- of more than 10,000 9-month-old babies. As part of the survey, the parents were asked 11 questions designed to test their knowledge of a baby's development. The researchers also examined what the parents said about their interactions with their children, and watched videotapes of how the parents taught new things to their kids.One-third of those surveyed incorrectly answered four or more of the questions.Even when the researchers adjusted the statistics to account for such factors as education levels and income, those parents were still less likely to enjoy "healthy interactions" with their children.A lack of proper understanding of a child's development can cause assorted problems, Paradis said. For example, she said, a mother might expect an 18-month-old child to sit still for a doctor's appointment, even though children that age are normally curious and like to wander around."A mom could misinterpret a child's normal curiosity as intentionally being defiant, and could respond with harsh discipline, withdrawal of affection and repetition of that pattern over time," Paradis said."That could hinder the child's potential for full growth and development."The findings were to be presented Sunday at the Pediatric Academic Societies' meeting in Honolulu. One solution, Paradis said, is for pediatricians to take a more active role in educating new parents."By improving knowledge of child development among all parents, not just those who are at highest risk, there's an opportunity to enhance parent-child interaction," she said."It can ultimately lead to better parenting."16.
