Polly’s son, Jim, had great difficulty in school. He was classified as the educationally handicapped and required a great deal of patience on the part of his parents and teachers. But Jim was a happy kid with a great smile that lit up the room. His parents knew his difficulties, but they always tried to help him see his strengths so that he could walk with pride. Shortly after Jim finished high school, he was killed in a motorcycle accident. After his death, his mother submitted this letter to the newspaper.“Today we buried our 20-year-old son. He was killed in a motorcycle accident on Friday night. How I wish I had known that the last time I had talked to him would be the last time. If I had only known that, I would have said to him, ‘Jim, I love you and I’m always so proud of you.’ I would have taken the time to count the many blessings he had brought to the lives of the people who loved him. I would have taken the time to appreciate his beautiful smile, his laughter, and his genuine love to other people.“When I put all the good things on the scale and try to balance them with all the irritating (恼人的) things such as the radio that was always too loud, the haircut that wasn’t to our liking, the dirty socks under the bed, etc., I find that the irritations really don’t amount to much.“I won’t get another chance to tell my son all that I would have wanted him to hear, but, other parents, do have a chance. Tell your young people what you would want them to hear as if it may be your last conversation. The last time I talked to Jim was the morning of the day when he died. He called me to say, ‘Hi, Mom! I just called to say I love you. You have to go to work now. Bye.’ That day, he gave me something to treasure forever. ”If there is any purpose at all for Jim’s death, maybe it is to make others appreciate life more and to tell people, especially family members, that they should take the time to let each other know just how much they care. You may never have another chance. Do it today!1. Who was Jim?A. A school boy.B. The writer.C. The president of a school board.D. An official of a school.2. What’s the meaning of the underlined phrase “the educationally handicapped”?A. The learning difficulty.B. The physical problems.C. The psychological problems.D. The communication difficulty.3. According to the writer, which of the following about Jim is TRUE?A. He was always sad about his school marks.B. His parents always scolded him about his bad school marks.C. His study needed more attention from his parents and teachers.D. He was killed in a car accident.4. What did Polly think of Jim?A. He was a lovely boy with a beautiful smile who always loved others.B. He was physically sick but always happy.C. He was an irritating boy with some bad habits.D. He seldom expressed his love for his parents.5. T he purpose of Polly’s l etter is to .A. memorize her sonB. teach parents to appreciate their childrenC. teach children how to be good boysD. give some advice on how to deal with children’s problem sBWhile IQ (Intelligence Quotient) tells you how smart you are. EQ (Emotional Quotient) tells you how well you use your smartness. Professor Salovery, the psychologist who created the term, EQ, says that it is IQ that gets you hired but it is EQ that gets you promoted.Supported by his research, he suggested tha t when predicting future successes, a person’s brainpower, as measured by IQ tests, might actually matter less than a person’s character, or EQ. Professor Salovery may be correct. For example, have you ever wondered why some of the best and smartest students in your class end up failing exams? Perhaps it is because of their EQ. People often make the mistake of thinking that EQ is the opposite of IQ. It is not. Although it is hoped that people have both high EQs and IQs, there is little doubt that those with low EQs have a hard time surviving in life. For a long time, researchers discussed if a person’s IQ could be raised. The geneticists said no, while the social scientists said yes. Furthermore, the social scientists said that it was possible to improve a person’s EQ, particularly in terms of “people skills”, such as understanding and communication.Recently, a professor released the findings of a study on senior high school students. When some normal students were introduced to some disabled students, they found that afterwards they were more willing to help people in difficulties. At the same time, there was a marked change in the disabled students’ attitudes. They became more positive about their disabilities and were more eager to try new things. People with high EQs often have positive attitudes towards life and are open to different ideas, so they tend to be more creative in their thinking. Please remember that having a high IQ is helpful but having a high EQ might even be more helpful.6. According to Professor Salovery, what factor matters the most in predicting whether a personwill be successful or not?A. How a person tests his / her brainpower.B. A person’s character.C. How smart a person is.D. A person’s IQ.7. The second paragraph tells us that .A. people who have a high IQ always have a high EQB. EQ is the opposite of IQC. people who have a low EQ tend to have a hard lifeD. people who have a high EQ always have a high IQ8. What did the professor find from his study of normal students being introduced to somedisabled children?A. Students with disabilities were not open in trying new things.B. There was no change in the normal students.C. The disabled students became more positive and more eager to try new things.D. The disabled students were more willing to help others.9. Which of the following is the writer’s attitude toward EQ and IQ?A. IQ is more helpful to people than EQ.B. IQ can be raised by understanding and communication.C. EQ can get people hired.D. A high EQ is of great benefit in getting people promoted.10. Which of the following would be the best title of this passage?A. A person’s brainpower.B. IQ, EQ and success.C. IQ and a person’s character.D. A person’s IQ and EQ.参考答案一.听写(每题1分,共10分)1.household2.desire3.favor4.absurd 5 cushion 6.envy 7.digital 8.cuisine 9.receiver 10.junior二.单选(每题1分,共15分)1-5 DBBDA 6-10 BABAB 11-15 DBCAC三.完形填空(每小题1分,满分10分)1-5 BBAAA 6-10 CBBDC四.阅读理解(每小题2分,共20分)1-5 AACAB 6-10 BCCDB。

I’ve never watched her show, but when a self-made billionaire gives life advice it’s probably worth listening to.Her point is that blind luck is very rare. You may have to be lucky to find a good job these days but that does not mean you should sit at home waiting for the opportunity to come to you. If you’ re a Chinese, you may already be familiar with the tale of a farmer waiting by a tree stump for a rabbit to run out and break its neck.A book by the UK psychologist Richard Wiseman, called The Luck Factor, argues we can all make ourselves luckier. It’s not about going to a temple to burn some incense (香) in hopes that the gods will give you good fortune; it’s practical advice you can follow each day.Wiseman conducted an experiment as part of his studies. First he divided volunteers into two groups:those who said they were lucky in life and those who said they were not. He gave everyone a newspaper and asked them to look through it to count how many photographs it had inside. On average, the unlucky people took about two minutes to count the photographs while the lucky people took just seconds. Why? On the second page of the newspaper, a command, “Stop counting. There are 43 photographs in this newspaper,” was written in big letters. The unluckypeople mostly did not spot the message. It’s easy to compare this situation to a young person looking for jobs in a local paper. They might search so hard for one type of position that they miss an even better opportunity. People who are “lucky”, in fact, keep an open mind and don’t go through the same routine every day.I first came to China in 2002 when it was considered a rather strange thing to do. Like many foreigners,my plan was to teach English for one year. Seven years later, and still here, I’ve had many great opportunities such as writing for newspapers and magazines. I did not dream these would have been possible. I’ve also never been sick, had an accident, go t into a fight or had problems with the police. Coincidence? After reading about Professor Wiseman’s studies I think not.As Wiseman advises, I usually trust my own judgment. Your friends and parents may give you advice based on rational thinking, but it’s important to consider how you feel about each choice you make. Your feeling acts as a warning for a potential problem. Finally, try to turn bad luck into good. Even if you do fall down and break a leg, the time spent at home can be used wisely to study English.31. Which of the following proverbs most agrees with the writer’s point?A. EQ (Emotional Quotient) tells you how well you use your smartness. Professor Salovery, the psychologist who created the term, EQ, says that it is IQ that gets you hired but it is EQ that gets you promoted.Supported by his research, he suggested that when predicting future successes, a person’s brainpower, as measured by IQ tests, might actually matter less than a person’s character, or EQ. Furthermore, the social scientists said that it was possible to improv e a person’s EQ, particularly in terms of “people skills”, such as understanding and communication.Recently, a professor released the findings of a study on senior high school students. Due to his old age, he was going bald, which made him feel too cold to swim in the pool. Therefore, biologists at the academy had a wet suit created for this penguin to help him get back in the swimming pool.Unlike marine mammals, which have a layer of blubber to keep them warm, penguins depend on their waterproof feathers. Without them, Pierre was unwilling to jump into the swimming pool and ended up trembling on the side of the pool while his 19 peers played in the water.“He was cold; he would shake,”said Pam Schaller, a senior biologist. Schaller first tried a heat lamp to keep Pierre warm. Then she got another idea: if wet suits keep humans warm in the cold Pacific, why not make one for Pierre?Schaller designed the suit, which covered Pierre’s body and had small openings for his flippers.“I would walk behind him and look at where there were any gaps, and cut and refit and cut and refit until it looked like it was extremely suitable,”she said. One concern was that the other penguins would reject Pierre in his new suit, but in fact, they accepted his new look. He swam freely and got along with others well, although he was the only penguin with a black stomach.Schaller couldn’t say for sure whether the wet suit allowed Pierre to recover his fine feathers, but “certainly we were able to keep him comfortable during a period of time that would have been very difficult for him to stay comfortable”.Pierre will take off his suit after his new feathers grow back.1. Such experiments are stressful and sometimes painful for animals, and expensive and time-consuming for people. Yet animal experimentation is still needed to help bridge vast gaps in medical knowledge. That is why there are some 50 to 100 million animals used in research around the world each year.Europe, on the whole, has the world's most restrictive (严格的) laws on animal experiments. Even so,its scientists use some 12 million animals a year, most of them mice and rats, for medical research. Official statistics show that just 1.1 million animals are used in research in America each year. But that is misleading. The American authorities do not think mice and rats are worth counting and, as these are the most common laboratory animals, the true figure is much higher. Japan and China have even less comprehensive (全面的) data than America. Now Europe is reforming the rules governing animal experiments by restricting the number of animals used in labs. Alternatives to animal testing, such as using human tissue or computer models, are now strongly recommended. In addition, sharing all research results freely should help to reduce the number of animals for scientific use. At present, scientists often share only the results of successful experiments. If their findings do not fit the hypothesis (假设) being tested, the work never sees the light of day. This practice means wasting time, money, and animals' lives in endlessly repeating the failed experiments.Animal experimentation has taught humanity a great deal and saved countless lives. It needs to continue, even if that means animals sometimes suffer. Europe's new measures should eventually both reduce the number of animals used in experiments and improve the way in which scientific research is conducted.(1)What is the main idea of this passage? ()A.The success of animal experiments should be ensured.B.A ban on the use of animals in the lab should be enforced.C.Greater efforts need to be taken to reduce the number of lab animals.D.Scientists should be required to share their research results with each other.(2)Which of the following statements is true about animals used in the lab? ()A.America uses only about 1.1 million lab animals per year.B.Europe does not use mice and rats as lab animals at all.C.Britain does not use as many lab animals as China does.D.Japan has limited data on the number of lab animals used each year.(3)Which of the following is mentioned as an alternative to replace animal experiments? ()A.Statistical studies. puter models.C.DNA planted in animals.D.Tissue from dead animals.(4)What usually happens to unsuccessful animal experiments? ()A.They are not made known to the public.B.They are made into teaching materials.C.They are collected for future publication.D.They are not removed from the research topic list.(二)Exams affect the whole family. As teenagers bury themselves in textbooks, parents have to behave like saints(圣人), ignoring doubts—is he actually studying up there, or just playing online games? Forget any practical help around the house. “He’s sitting at the kitchen table reading the TV guide,” says the mother of a 15-year-ol d boy. “But when I ask if he can take the rubbish out, he looks very angry and says, ‘But I’m revising’.” Chloe, 16, comes from a large family and finds it is hard to revise. “I become angry easily,” Chloe says.“I camplain to my mum that there’s too much n oise and too much mess.”Beyond these practical considerations, parents are confused about how much they should get involved. Some call for expert help. Others buy lots of practice exam papers. But you may use yourskills to spur your children. Anne, 18, admits that the greatest driving force for revision is being in competition with her twin sister. My mother always says my sister is better than me.Bribery(行贿)is not unknown.“Some parents offer their children material or cash rewards,” says Mike Evans, the author of How To Pass Your Exams. “This may achieve the required result in some cases, but I think it does nothing for the longer-term aim, which I believe is to encourage them to take responsibility for their own personal development.”“I deal with exa m stress all the time,” says an experienced teacher.“Basically, the pupils and I have an agreement to convince the parents that all is going well. Then the parents back off and everything gets better.” Her fantasy solution would keep parents away for six weeks so that they don’t pass on pre exam stress to their children.(1)According to the writer, when children study for tests,________.A.children shouldn’t make parents doubt themB.children should help with some houseworkC.parents should create a peaceful environmentD.parents should bear all their children’s behavior(2)What does the underlined word “ spur” in Paragraph 2 mean?()A.Encourage.B.Punish.fort.cate.(3)What is Mike Evans’s attitude towards parents’ bribing childr en for better grades? Turn to your parents for help.D. As you get out into the world, you may find yourself feeling better.E. In short, drinking and taking drugs will make you feel worse — not better — in the long run.F. 高中英语 Unit 2 Robots单元综合测试 新人教版选修7-新人教版高中选修7英语试题
Unit 2 RobotⅠ.阅读理解AAs civilization proceeds in the direction of technology, it passes the point of supplying all the basic essentials of life —food, shelter, clothes and warmth. Then we are faced with a choice between using technology to provide and fulfill needs which have now been regarded as unnecessary or, on the other hand, using technology to reduce the number of hours of work which a man must do in order to earn a given standard of living. In other words, we either raise our standard of living above that necessary for comfort and happiness or we leave it at this level and work shorter hours.I shall take it for granted that mankind has, by that time, chosen the latter alternative. Men will be working shorter and shorter hours in their paid employment. It follows that the housewife will also expect to be able to have more leisure in her life without lowering her standard of living. It also follows that human domestic servants will have completely ceased to exist. Yet the great majority of the housewives will wish to be relieved completely from the routine operations of the home such as scrubbing the floors or the bath of the cooker, or washing the clothes or washing up, or dusting or sweeping, or making beds.By far the most logical step to relieve the housewife of routine is to provide a robot which can be trained to the requirements of a particular home and can be programmed to carry out half a dozen or more standard operation, when is switched by the housewife.1.As civilization develops in the direction of technology, ________.A.the basic essentials of life must be suppliedB.it is important to supply the basic essentials of lifeC.it is no longer so important as it was in the past to supply all the basic essentials of lifeD.it is not necessary to supply the basic essentials of life2.According to the author, we are faced with ________.A.the choice of providing and fulfilling our needsB.the choice of using technologyC.the choice of earning a standard of livingD.a choice between using technology to provide and fulfill needs to reduce the number of working hours3.What alternative will mankind have chosen in future?A.To leave our standard of living at this level and work shorter hours.B.To raise our standard of living.C.To fulfill needs which have been regarded as unnecessary.D.To lower our standard of living and work shorter hours.4.It can be inferred that robots will be invented ________.A.to take the place of housewivesB.to help manage a familyC.to do the routine of housework instead of humanD.to provide the daily necessities for manBI log onto a computer at the doctor's office to say I have arrived and then wait until a voice calls me into the examination room. There, a robotic nurse directs me onto the scales and then takes my blood pressure. Some time later, in steps the doctor, who is also a robot. He notes down my symptoms and gives me a prescription. I pay for my visit using a credit card machine and return home without having encountered another human being. This scenario (场景) is my nightmarish (噩梦般的) vision of the future, which hasn't come to pass — at least not yet.I should say I really do like many aspects of technology. I am a big fan of air conditioning in the summer and heaters in winter. But I am writing this because I don't want machines to take over. When I call my dentist's office and actually get a human being on the line, I am thrilled. And when I see the introduction of yet more selfservice checkout stations at the grocery store, I feel like shouting: “When it comes to cashiers (收银员), make mine human, please!〞After all, human cashiers sometimes give you a store coupon (优惠券) for items you are buying but you didn't realize were on sale. Even more than that, real life cashiers often take an interest in particularly cute children, which can brighten a young mother's day. A cashier may also show compassion for an elderly person struggling to get that last penny out of her purse. What technological device would do any of this? I don't want to go back to the Store Age, but I'm also worried about a world run by machines. Sometimes when you're chatting with someone, you discover things you need to know. Maybe a receptionist needs prayers said for a sick child. Maybe a sales person can offer a bit of encouragement for a customer who is feeling tired.Machines can be efficient and costeffective and they often get the j ob done just fine. But they lack an element so crucial to everyday life.It is being human that prompts (促使) us to smile at others, which may be what they need at that moment. Call it the spirit, the soul or the heart. It is something no machine will ever have.5.What's the author's purpose in writing the first two paragraphs?A.To indicate high technology can make our future life very efficient.B.To warn readers of the possible dangers of robotic nurses and doctors.C.To describe a possible future scene where robots take control of our life.D.To predict how technology can affect the way we see a doctor in the future.6.What is the main reason that the author prefers being served by humans rather than by robots?A.Robots don't offer to give store coupons.B.Robots are indifferent and emotionless.C.Services from robots cost less time and more money.D.Robots can't do a job as well as humans do.7.What does the underlined word “element〞 mean in the eighth paragraph?A.Humor. B.The ability to speak.C.Methods. D.Effective communication.8.What's the main idea of the text?A.The opinion about using man or machine.B.Machines give people a lot of convenience.C.Being human service is better than service from machines.D.Being human service cost little money.CWhen he was just 19, Michael Dell started the company thatwould dominate the industry. At the time, IBM personal computers sold in stores forabout $3,000. After taking them apart and rebuilding them, Dell realized the components (零部件) could be bou ght for onefourth the price. Soon he was buying components to reduce the cost. A good business decision, but it meant his room was starting to look like a mechanic's shop.“I was quite excited about the possibilities for personal computers and how they could change society. I had this idea to sell the products directly to the user over the phone.〞 he said. College plans and his parents' expectations bothered him a lot. But Michael Dell was determined. He was surprised that his mother wasn't suspicious about the three computers in the backseat. By November, news reached his parents that he wasn't attending classes. On a surprise visit to Austin, they caught their son on spot. Michael Dell told dad that he wanted to compete with IBM.Although Michael agreed to focus on his studies, the business chances and the timing couldn't have been better. The public was becoming more interested in computers, but no one was producing them. In early May, a week before his final exams, Michael started Dell Computer Corporation with $1,000. He took his exam, and then dropped out of college at the end of his freshman year. You may worry about all these things: what classes to take, what to wear on the first day of school and what will everyone think of you? But so far high school has been the best experience for me ever.On my first day of high school, I asked a senior where my class was, and he told me it was on the fourth floor, next to the pool. I found out five minutes later that we didn't even have a fourth floor and had no pool either! Besides that event, I didn't have any trouble with the older kids.I think the biggest difference between middle and high school is the homework load and the size of the school. I went from fifteen minutes of homework a night to several hours, so I had to learn time management pretty quickly! Our class size was around 550, so being exposed (暴露) to so many new people was a big change. Gettinginvolved in clubs, sports, music and other activities at school makes it easier to get to know people in every grade —it's always useful to have an upperclassman friend! The best suggestion I can give about the four years you spend in high school is to learn things for the sake of learning, not just to get a good grade. There have been so many tests that I've crammed (突击式学习) on the night before and got an A, but now I don't remember anything. I've changed that this year, and I enjoy school so much more. Relating to academics, don't take easy classes just to have a simple year. If you have a choice between “AP Chemistry〞and “Racquet Sports〞, the first will prove to be more useful!13.On the first day of high school, the author ________.A.failed to adapt himself to a new environmentB.found it was hard for him to get on with new classmatesC.was teased by a senior studentD.lost his way in the schoolyard14.Which of the following is TRUE about the author's advice on high school life?A.Making as many upperclassmen friends as possible.B.Taking an active part in various afterschool activities.C.Trying to obtain useful knowledge instead of getting good grades.D.Choosing easy but useful courses instead of practical ones.15.In writing the text, the author intends to ________.A.tell others his firstday experience at high schoolB.express his opinions on high school educationC.describe what can be learnt at high schoolD.share his life and thoughts at high schoolⅡ.任务型阅读Many people experience feelings of sadness, and depression in winter. 16.________ Make a planThe winter months can often seem quite dull, many of us spending the majority of our time indoors. Pick up the phone and make plans to spend time with friends and family.20.________To improve your happiness over the winter, it is important to make time for those little things that improve your mood. Make a list of the daytoday things that make you happy —such as having a catchup with a friend, or listening to your favorite song. Planning regular treats not only gives you something to look forward to, it can also improve each day.A.Treat yourselfB.Get an indoor hobbyC.Different people have different hobbies, so try to find one everyone can join in.D.Exercise is a great way to beat the blues as it will leave you looking great.E.However, spending time with others can be one of the greatest mood supporters.F.This could be a night out or weekend away, or something ongoing like a new fitness challenge.G.If the winter blues are starting to set in, check out these ways to improve your happiness this winter.Ⅲ.完形填空During Hurricane Sandy last year, the garage and basement of Christine O'Donovan's house in New York were flooded, and two cars, years of paperwork, and photos were __21__.
