Quack A quack is "a fraudulent or ignorant pretender to medical skill" or "a person who pretends, professionally or publicly, to have skill, knowledge, or qualifications he or she does not possess". The word "quack" derives from the archaic word "quacksalver" of Dutch origin, meaning "boaster who uses a salve." In the Middle Ages the word "quack" meant "shouting". The quacksalvers sold their wares on the market shouting in a loud voice.2. Medical Laboratory A medical laboratory or clinical laboratory is a laboratory where tests are done on clinical specimens in order to get information about the health of a patient. Laboratory tests are an integral part of the workup of any patient, and constitute up to 80% of a physician's diagnosis andtreatment choice. In many countries, there are two main types of labs that process the majority of medical specimens. Hospital laboratories are attached to a hospital, and perform tests on patients. Private (or community) laboratories receive samples from general practitioners, insurance companies, and other health clinics for analysis. These can also be called reference laboratories where more unusual and obscure tests are performed. As medical technology advances, doctors are able to get more and more tests done in shorter and shorter amounts of time. While in the past a doctor might order a potassium (钾) and glucose (葡萄糖) and it would take hours for the results, now a doctor can order a full chemistry panel of 20 or more different analytes (被分析化学物) and get the results within an hour. The results are also much more accurate and reliable now than in the past.A Doctor or a Quack? 医生还是江湖郎中?1 The modern doctor's business is an extremely simple one, which could be acquired in about two weeks. "Stand up," says the doctor, "and put your arms up above your head." Then the doctor goes behind the patient and strikes him a powerful blow on the back. "Do you feel that?" he says."I do," says the patient. Then the doctor turns suddenly and lets him have a left hook under the heart. "Can you feel that?" he says viciously, as the patient falls over on the sofa in a heap. "Get up," says the doctor, and counts ten. The patient rises. Jerome was an English writer of the late 19th century and early 20th century. He was bornin 1859 and died in 1927. He published his first work in 1885, On Stage and Off, a collection of humorous sketches about the theater. In his lifetime he was also known as a journalist, playwright, and the founderof a magazine called The Idler. Today he is chiefly remembered as a humorist. His most famous books include The Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow, Three Men in a Boat, and its sequel Three Men on the Bummel. 2. Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog)Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog), published in 1889, recounts the misadventures of three Victorian (维多利亚时代的) middle-class London-types men and one dog trying to have a boating vacation on the Thames. It is one of the most readable, and funny books of the era.A Victim of 107 Fatal Maladies身患107种致命疾病的患者- 2 -- 3 - 1 It is a most extraordinary thing, but I never read a patent medicine advertisement without being forced to draw the conclusion that I am suffering from the particular disease said in the ad and dealt with in its most deadly form. The diagnosis seems in every case to correspond exactly with all the sensations that I have ever felt.2 I remember going to the British Museum one day to read up on the treatment for some slight ailment of which I had a touch —hay fever, I fancy it was. I got down the book, and read all I came to read; and then, in an unthinking moment, I idly turned the leaves, and began to lazily study diseases, generally. I forget which was the first disease I plunged into —some fearful, devastating scourge , I know — and, before I had glanced half down the list of "warning symptoms", it was borne in upon me that I had fairly got it.3 I sat for a while, frozen with horror ; and then, in the listlessness of despair, I again turned over the pages. I came to typhoid fever —read the symptoms —discovered that I had typhoid fever, must have had it for months without knowing it — wondered what else I had got; turned up St. Vitus's Dance —found, as I expected, that I had that too —began to get interested in my case, and determined to examine it thoroughly, and so started alphabetically — read up on fever, and learnt that I was sickening for it, and that the acute stage would commence in about another fortnight . Bright's disease, I was relieved to find, I had only in a modified form, and, so far as that was concerned, I might live for years. Cholera I had, with severe complications ; and diphtheria I seemed to have been born with. I read conscientiously through the twenty-six letters, and the only malady I could conclude I had not got was housemaid 's knee.4 I felt rather hurt about this at first; it seemed somehow to be a sort of slight. Why hadn't I got housemaid's knee? Why this unpleasant reservation? After a while, however, less grasping feelings prevailed . I reflected that I had every other known malady in the pharmacology , and I grew less selfish, and determined to do without housemaid's knee. Gout , in its most malignant stage, it would appear, had seized me without my being aware of it; and zymosis I had evidently been suffering with from boyhood. There were no more diseases after zymosis, so I concluded there was nothing else the matter with me.5 I sat and pondered . I thought what an interesting case I must be from a medical point of view, what an acquisition I should be to a class! Students would have no need to "walk the hospitals", if they had me. I was a hospital in myself. All they need do would be to walk round me, and, after that, take their diploma .6 Then I wondered how long I had to live. I tried to examine myself. I felt my pulse. I could not at first feel any pulse at all. Then, all of a sudden, it seemed to start off. I pulled out my

At about 5:15 a.m., Antonetti's roommate said she found her attacked and on the couch, bleeding from her head. Police said EMS transported Antonetti to the hospital, where she died 18 days later from head injuries resulting from the attack. The initial investigation went cold after authorities said they were unable to charge a suspect in this case. However, the case was re-examined in 2007 by the Cold Case Unit. In the examination, police said they followed up on an anonymous tip that was received that year. The 2007 tip produced more leads, which ultimately led to the charge of one of Antonetti's ex-boyfriends.Some 23 years later, the case was presented to a grand jury on June 10, and resulted in a charge for first-degree murder against Dennis Davis.Though Davis was previously interviewed at the time of the murder, he was never listed as a suspect. Detective storyThe traditional elements of the detective story are: (1) the seemingly perfect crime; (2) the wrongly accused suspect at whom circumstantial evidence points; (3) the bungling (搞得一团糟) of dim-witted police;(4) the greater powers of observation and superior mind of the detective; and (5) the startling and unexpected denouement, in which the detective reveals how the identity of the culprit was ascertained. Detective stories frequently operate on the principle that superficially convincing evidence is ultimately irrelevant. Usually it is also axiomatic that the clues from which a logical solution to the problem can be reached be fairly presented to the reader at exactly the same time that the sleuth (侦探) receives them and that the sleuth deduce the solution to the puzzle from a logical interpretation of these clues. The first detective story was The Murders in the Rue Morgue by Edgar Allan Poe, published in April 1841. The profession of detective had come into being only a few decades earlier, and Poe is generally thought to have been influenced by the Mémoires(1828–29) of François-Eugène Vidocq, who in 1817 founded the world’s first detective bureau, in Paris.Poe’s fictional French detective, C. Auguste Dupin, appeared in two other stories, The Mystery of Marie Roget (1845) and The Purloined Letter (1845). The detective story soon expanded to novel length. The introduction of the mass-produced paperback book in the late 1930s made detective-story writers wealthy, among them the Americans Erle Stanley Gardner, whose criminal lawyer Perry Mason unraveled crimes in court, Rex Stout, with his fat, orchid-raising detective Nero Wolfe and his urbane assistant Archie Goodwin, and Frances and Richard Lockridge, with another bright married couple, Mr. and Mrs. North. In France, Georges Simenon produced novel after novel at a rapid-fire pace, making his hero, Inspector Maigret, one of the best-known detectives since Sherlock Holmes. Other writers who carried out the tradition of Holmes or broke new ground included Nicholas Blake (pseudonym of the poet C. Day-Lewis), Michael Innes, Dame Ngaio Marsh, Josephine Tey, Carter Dickson (John Dickson Carr), and P. D. James. After 1945, writers such as John Le Carré adapted the detective-story format to the increasingly popular spy novel. The Mystery Writers of America, a professional organization founded in 1945 to elevate the standards of mystery writing, including the detective story, has exerted an important influence through its annual Edgar Allan Poe Awards for excellence.2. Identical twinsIdentical twins develop from a single egg/sperm combination that splits a few days after conception. Their DNA originates from a single source, thus their genetic makeup is the same and the characteristics that are determined by genetics will be similar. Monozygotic twins are always of the same gender, except in extremely rare cases of chromosomal defect.

Unit 1 The Story of Steve JobsThis is the text of the Commencement Address by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, at Stanford University, delivered on June 12, 2005.1 I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out2 It started before I was born. My biological mother wasa young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking, "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him" They said, "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college. This was the start in my life.3 And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trusted that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked far more interesting. It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm

The doctor looks him over very carefully without speaking, and then suddenly fetches him a1 现在干医生这一行非常简单,大约只需两个礼拜就能学会。

Think over these questions.1.What ways of getting rich do these pictures suggest?Reference answer: The four pictures represent four different ways of getting rich. The first picture suggests that one can get rich quick by buying stocks. The second picture shows that people can become rich through inheritance of fortunes, either of their own parents, or of some wealthy persons. The third picture indicates that marriage could be a passport to the kingdom of wealth. That is to say, a man or a woman could be a rich person if his or her spouse is rich. The fourth picture tells people that lotteries make millionaires.2. Which do you think is the quickest way to get rich?Reference answer: All these four methods of getting rich quick could turn a penniless guy into a millionaire overnight, but it seems to me that winning a lottery is the quickest way of making people rich. Just pay a dollar or two and you could become a rich person overnight! But on the other hand, such an opportunity is very rare.- 2 -- 3 -B. One day, Ali Baba was working deep in the forest. Suddenly he heard the noise of many horses. He tied up his two mules behind some high rocks. Then he climbed into a tall tree to hide. From up high in the tree, Ali Baba saw forty men on forty horses. Each man wore a saber and a dagger in his belt. They looked very fierce. Ali Baba could see at once that they were thieves. The forty thieves dismounted in front of a huge rock, and one, who seemed to be captain, said, "Open, Sesame!" And a door flew open in the rock. Then they all went inside and the door closed behind them.Ali Baba could hardly believe what he had seen! He did not dare to climb down from his tree —the thieves might come out at any moment and find him. He waited a long time.At last the door opened, and the forty thieves came out. Their captain said, "Shut, Sesame!" The door closed, and the forty thieves rode away. When they were out of sight Ali Baba came down from the tree. He walked up to the huge rock and said, "Open, Sesame!" The door at onceopened, and Ali Baba stepped inside. He foundhimself in a large cave, lighted from a hole in the top, and full of all kinds of treasure —rich silks and carpets, gold and silver ware, and great bags of gold.

Unit 1A woman won a bucketful of quarters at a slot machine in Atlantic City. She found two black men already in the elevator as she went back to her room to hide the quarters. She hesitated to enter the elevator because she was afraid that the two men were going to rob her. After she joined them in the elevator, she heard one man say, “Hit the floor”, which was taken by her for falling on her knees to the floor. So she did.The two men explained to her “hit the floor”meant “to push the button for the floor they were going to”. The woman’s fear gave place to embarrassment. The two men gathered up the scattered quarters with her and accompanied her to her room. The next day the woman received a dozen roses and twelve 100-dollar bills given by Eddie Murphy and Michael Jordan to thank her for the best laugh they’d had in years. Unit 2The young man in the story dreamed of sailing around the world, but he never received any support or encouragement from people around him, not even his father, who wanted his son to work like him in a factory. But the boy stuck to his dream and to make his dream come true, he did two jobs to earn enough money for a sailboat. At long last, he purchased a boat and was ready to sail when federal agents were preparing to confiscate it for carrying drugs. He was even asked to pay for the docking fees of the former owner. The young man couldn’t take the hard blow and in anger and desperation, he painted “Ill Feelings”on the boat and sailed out regardless of the warning of an upcoming storm. Soon he found himself in danger when attacked by the storm and asked the harbormaster to harbor his boat. But to his dismay, he was told no “Ill Feelings”would be harbored in this dock.Unit 3The author, as a college sophomore, shared a rented apartment with three of his schoolmates, for they didn’t want to live in a dorm. But they had much trouble sharing the only bathroom as one of them was a taker, using up everything available; another a polluter, making a mess in the bathroom; the third a monopolizer, occupying the bathroom for a long time regardless of others’urgent needs. With the example, the author thinks that the same is true of the world where some people or corporations take too much or make wrong use of our planet’s resources for their own benefit at the cost of other people just as his three roommates did with the bathroom. To solve the issue, a planet policy including compensations for the victims is a must for building a fair and harmonious world.Unit 4Bartleby was a new clerk I employed to write legal papers as my business was growing. At first, he did an extraordinary quantity of writing and he worked just like a machine, never looking or speaking. But later, he would refuse my assignments by saying, “I would prefer not to.”What was worse, he never ate out or went anywhere, and made my law office his home. In spite of my deep sympathy for him, I had to dismiss him. However, he wouldn’t leave and locked himself in my office. So I left him. He wasfinally taken to prison, and not until after he died in prison did I discover that he had worked many years at the Dead Letter Office, where every letter he had had to read had destroyed his hope in life.Unit 5Eight years ago I first met Mr. Foster, an old busboy at an airport. In spite of his age and physical handicap, he would go wherever he was needed instead of waiting to be summoned. What is more, he served every customer with the same enthusiasm whether they gave him tips or not, or no matter how much the tips were. Impressed and inspired, I developed a great admiration for him in the following years. I would contrast him with his fellow workers who were just loosely assembled there, idly waiting by for tables to become empty. However, Mr. Foster was ordered to stop helping people and act like his co-workers. Later, he was fired. Though he was back at work on a trial basis several months later, his spirit was gone. And today I learned that he quit his job—his heart was broken.Unit 6Tempted by material comfort and the various credit cards available, many young people accept student loans and credit cards gladly. On credit, they buy cars, furniture and nice new clothes. Thus a few years later, they’ve got a load of debts. The lure of living on debt increased in the 1990s along with the economic boom, skyrocketed tuition and fees, increased student loan limits, plus the promotion of the mass media. In 1998, the average undergraduate had a balance of $1,879 on 3.5 credit cards. Many critics worry that credit debts make graduates pay the consequences sooner or later. All this debt may force graduates to give up exciting but low-paying jobs in favor of dreary but well-paying jobs in order to repay lenders. Unit 1B. So why did I drop out?2 It started before I was born. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking, "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said, "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school.
