For me, one of the greatest pleasures in life is going to watch a great film at the cinema. It's a chance for me to get away from real life. There's nothing better than being absorbed in a story unless,of course, someone decides to break down the moment. Whether at a cinema or a huge theatre, someone usually decides to treat the place like their own home! There is an accepted way of behaving at the cinema which some people don't seem to understand. To start with, some people always turn up late causing you to rise from your seat to allow them to go past. Then, when you want to enjoy the surround-sound effects, someone begins to enjoy drinks and popcorn and thus makes a lot of noises. And what I can't stand most is people who decide to chat to their friends, sometimes not even about the film.I'm not alone in this situation. Simon Mayo,a film critic at the BBC, experienced a "new low" during a film. He says,"The woman in front of me got a mirror out, then her boyfriend got a phone out and used the light on it to allow her to do her make-up!"Simon has helped to create a list of rules on how moviegoers should behave at the cinema. One of them is to ban mobile phones, and another is not to take your shoes off-a most serious offence(冒犯)!Of course, when we have paid for a ticket,we feel it is our right to relax and enjoy the film in the way we want to,but we mustn't forget our fellow moviegoers who want to enjoy the cinematicexperience, too.The best choice for anyone wanting to break the rules of cinema manners is to get a DVD and watch it at home. But we all know that the best way to enjoy the art of cinematography is on the big screen. What about you? What annoys you about other people at the cinema?( )1. What is considered by Simon to be the rudest at a cinema?A. Using mobile phones.B. Chatting to their friends.C. Taking the shoes off.D. Having drinks and eating popcorn.( )2." An Unpleasant Experience二、阅读理解From a young age,I've had a really deep connection with being outside. I've been skiing since I was eight or nine years old. I thought the force of the snow would destroy me,it was powerful. But in the end,I felt the avalanche slow down and I just popped(迸出)right out of the snow at the bottom of the valley. It took Jeremy and Xavier about 20 minutes to reach me. There was a pile of debris(碎片) across the bottom of the mountain 300m wide. They couldn't believe it when they saw me, I was so lucky,Has the experience changed me? Do I think about life differently? In Kenya,it is a tradition among the Masai men and women to pierce and then make their ear lobes(耳垂)longer using ivory, wood or stones. They then wear colourful things on their ear lobes. This is a common practice since longer ear lobes are seen as a sign of beauty. This tradition has now found its way into present-day culture. Nowadays, this might still seem unusual to some, but with more and more well-known actors and film stars showing off their longer ear lobes,it will finally become more fashionable. It is understood that different cultures around the world have different ways of showing beauty. There's only one place, and that's Hollywood, in California. The scenes you see from the tourist train are filmsets(布景) in the Universal Studios, one of the oldest and largest movie companies in the USA.A visit to Universal Studios brings back memories of great days of Hollywood, the films and the stars. But they are only memories. Hollywood isn't quite the same as it used to be. Costs have gone up and confidence has gone down. Movie-makers are afraid to spend their money on expensive new ideas. Instead, they repeat old ones. The film industry is changing fast. Teenagers still go out to the movies. The theatre is a good place to meet friends away from home. But older people mostly stay at home to watch series, like Dynasty, which have become as important to Hollywood as expensive movies. These "soap opera", as they are called, show rich, powerful families living in beautiful homes and wearing beautiful clothes. But the actors and actresses are nearly all middle-aged, like many of the people who watch them.Though it is soap operas that are keeping the film-makers of Hollywood in business, big films are still being made in America. But more and more of them are made outside Hollywood. New York is the most important new centre, but there are many others as well. Movie-makers have realized that they don't need Hollywood any more. Modern cameras and real houses replace expensively made copies in a studio. Other states, especially Florida and Texas, are working hard to take the film business away from California.

Traveling can improve our thinking skills. That’s WHY we travel. What follows is HOW we travel.CHEAP TRA VELThe less you spend, the closer you come to the reason you came. We’re savers by choice when traveling, although we could afford to stay in middle-priced hotels and eat in their restaurants if we cut back on the length of our trips. By spending less we can travel longer and travel better. We meet more locals by using buses rather than taxis and by staying in small family-run hotels and eating in local-style cafes. Spending too much money makes you away from the foreign experience you came to have.TRA VELERS --- NOT TOURISTSWhat’s the difference? Travelers are more likely to get deeper into the life of a country than tourists. The way to do this is to do lots of pre-trip reading about the countries we will visit, and try to learn a few words of local languages.Independent travel is usually far less expensive than packaged tours. We don’t use travel agents because we don’t stay in hotels that charge high, and we can get cheaper tickets on the Internet. We like figuring out where to eat and working out how to get around. This puts us into direct contact with the local people. Independent travel isn’t as comfortable or convenient, but it’s the most meaningful way to travel.MOVING AROUNDDespite its discomforts, we take public transportation whenever possible. Traveling in a car is easier, but also scarier. In much of the world roads are poor and driving behaviors are not fixed. And it always seems that you won’t have enough time to finish all you need to do. Do you know the way to make the time for your goal? Here are some tips which may help you.Focus on(集中) one thing at a time. Remember not to take on too many goals at a time, or your energy will be used up soon. Once one goal is finished, you can go to the next one. Set up at least a month per goal.Prioritize(优先处理)the most important. We have more than one thing to complete. If we put all the things before our goal, we won’t ever find the time for it. If we put our goal at the first place, we’ll make the time.Keep your goal simple. It’s important not to make your goal too difficult. If you want to be slim, for example, you just need to develop the habit for your health, walking each day (or running, or cycling etc), drinking more water, eating fruits and vegetables instead of junk snacks.Close your door. Try to set a time that you won’t be disturbed (打扰). If you are disturbed from time to time, you really don't have the time to help out. So you must shut your door when working on the most important tasks. If so, you will get them done better.Stop wasting time. In our daily life, there are many things wasting your time, such as watching drama series and going to bars. If you don’t do them, it won’t make a great difference to your life. So stop doing them to free up time for your goals. If you follow the above, you will succeed in achieving your goal.答案:1.make 2.tips/advice/suggestions e 4.first 5.simple 6.healthy 7.avoid 8.closed 9.waste 10.followed四、首字母填空(A)Many hundreds of years age, a native(土著的)American chief named Shenandoah lived with his people in what is now the state of Virginia.Very l___1___ is known about Shenandoah, but the soft sound of his name was given to a river. The Shenandoah River still runs in a d___2___ valley(山谷)between the mountains in West Virginia, just as it did when Chief Shenandoah lived. There is an old story which tells how the river got its name.A long time ago, many c___3___ before Europeans went to live in America, there was a great lake hidden in the mountains of Virginia. For hundreds of years, the native Americans lived near this lake, feeding on the f___4___ the caught in its clean waters. They often climbed up the mountains and set up camp there d___5___ their long hunts for food.In the evenings they sat near their camp and looked d___6___ at the beautiful lake.On a clear, starry night you could see thousands of stars s___7___ and dancing on the water below. The native Americans loved this lake, and because they could see the stars in it,they called the lake,"Clear Daughter of the Stars."In their l___8___,the word for this was"Shenandoah."One day there was a loud crashing sound at one end of the lake. Unit 4 Growing up单元话题阅读理解练习(2023·江苏苏州·统考一模)It is a fact that people die every moment of every day. However, the deaths of those who have done great work in the public realm (领域) can be especially shocking and heartbreaking — even to those who don’t know them personallyOn Jan. 26, Kobe Bryant, one of the most legendary (传奇的) NBA players in history, died in a terrible accident. He was 41 years old when a helicopter he was riding crashed, killing him and eight others, including his 13-year-old daughter Gianna Bryant.Following Bryant’s death, people have paid tribute (敬意) to the basketball superstar — not just for his achievements on the court, but also for his personality and the inspiration he has given to us.In the basketball world, Bryant ranks among the top players of all time.

Luckily, even the less developed countries often have good public transportation systems, riding buses and trains brings us into close contact with the local people.CARRYING STUFF(东西)Backpacks work better for long-term travel than the wheeled luggage(轮式行李箱) most middle-aged travelers use. Using luggage is fine with a car, but backpacks are easier for bus and train travel. Best of all, wearing backpacks bridge the gap between age groups ---allowing gray-haired travelers like us to make friends with younger travelers.答案:1.Why 2.discuss 3.choose 4.longer 5.understanding 6.prepare 7.meaningful 8.closely 9.prefer 10.bridge(B)It’s a big challenge for you to complete any personal goal in time. We look at other people, envy (羡慕) them for looking so unusually perfect and wish we could trade places with them, while they look at us and think of the same thing.I have a friend who never gets tired of talking. And in most conversations, she is the only one who seems to be interested in the things she has to say. So all of our other friends don’t like to be in the circles whenever she’s around. One key to self-improvement is to LISTEN and TALK to a trusted friend. Find someone who you find comforts in opening up with even the gentlest topics you want to discuss. Ask questions like “Do I talk too loud?”, “Does my breath smell?”, “Do I ever bore you when we’re together?”Lend her your ears for comments and don’t give her answers like “Don’t exaggerate (夸大)! That’s just the way I am!”One of Whitney Houston’s songs says “Learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all.”True enough! In order to love others, you must love yourself too. Remember, you cannot give what you do not have. Self-improvement makes us better people, we then inspire (鼓舞) other people, and then the rest of the world will follow.Stop thinking of yourselves as second-rate beings (二等人). Forget the thought of “If only I was richer…if only I was thinner”and so on. Accepting your true self is the first step to self-improvement.Nobody is perfect. Researchers say sleep is probably the best tool we have for memory and learning. But what about getting rest during the middle of the day?A recent study on napping(小睡) says short periods of sleep may help our brains work better. Past studies have shown that napping can help babies and young children learn better. And napping can help brain performance in older adults. Taking a nap may also help this group of people fight off memory loss because of the increase in their age. Many Americans do nap. But one-third of all adults in the United States are also chronically(长期的) tired, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It found that 50 million to 70 million Americans have chronic sleep disorders. However, they seem to be unwilling to tell people that they take a nap. They may think that napping shows they are weak or they don’t have enough energy. It is not an uncommon opinion that only children, the very old, sick or lazy people nap. In fact, Americans sometimes do a very strange thing. Some people brag about how few hours of sleep they need each night to show that they are somehow stronger than the average human–superhuman, if you will. However, that may be changing. Many offices now offer napping rooms and napping cafes(咖啡馆) are appearing in many U.S. cities, including Washington, D.C.Remember that an hour long nap may be too long for young, healthy adults. It is recommended that 30 minut es is enough to remove the pressure(压力) to sleep and will help people feel more awake. If people nap longer, they will get trapped into deep sleep, which can be hard to get out of. If you have trouble falling asleep at night, limit your daytime nap to under 45 minutes.
