His health was poor when his daughter was only sixteen; his breathing was difficult; he rested often when climbing stairs; he often coughed for an hour. Now his daughter is deeply hurt; she was so careful raising her own daughter. For what purpose? To see all her care thrown away as her sixteen-year-old daughter slowly kills herself? 新视野大学英语第二版第二册答案(共10篇)新视野大学英语第二版第二册答案(一): 新视野大学英语读写教程第二版第二册作文答案第一单元A larger and larger part of society is expressing its concern about environmentalprotection.Active in their concern, teachers and students hold specific meetings todiscuss environmental protection. Also, city planners take environmental problems intoserious consideration. And,though reducing pollution can be expensive, factories oftentake every possible measure to do their part. Many people are concerned and activebecause air and water pollution affects everyone and makes it difficult for cities tosurvive and businesses to make a profit.第二单元Computers, just like any new technology, have a negative side.As more and morecomputers are used in production lines, many jobs are being taken over bycomputer-controlled machines. As a result, many workers are finding themselves jobless. This constitutes a threat to social security.Another problem is computer crimes.Forexample, some people are finding ways to break into the bankcomputer systems andtransfer large sums of money to their own accounts. There have been many reports likethis. One more negative effect of computers is that they bring about health problems.Sitting in front of computers al l day undoubtedly affects people’s health.Back pain, wristpain, failing eyesight,to name only a few.第三单元Many people place so much emphasis on success that they think any failure is bad.Failure is never pleasant because it hurts people. But in fact itcan make positivecontribution to our life once we learn how to make the best ofit.We can learn from adisastrous party how to give a good one.And we can learn from anill-chosen first housewhat to look for in a second.Even a total failure can give us fresh ideas or a change ofdirection.Repeated failures lead to success and prove to be beneficial to us as weexperiment every day to find out the right way of doing things.第四单元Parents have to save a large amount of money for their children to study abroad.Apartfrom the international flight, they have to pay for their daily expense, such as food,shelter,entertainment,long-distance telephone calls, and clothing. In addition, thechildren should have some money ready to cover unexpected expenses.第五单元There are many problems for mixed marriages. The number one reason is the culturaldifferences between the mixed couple, like those in customs and lifestyle. Many peoplehave prejudice against mixed marriages. They often feel shocked to see people ofdifferent races get married and have doubts about suchmarriages. What’s more, children from mixed marriages tend to be looked down upon or even badly treated bytheir peers.Mixed marriages face many trials, and as a result, mixed couples have higherdivorce rates than couples of the same race.估计你们也就考这些吧【新视野大学英语第二版第二册答案】新视野大学英语第二版第二册答案(二): 求新视野大学英语第二版第二册读写教程unit10答案求新视野大学英语第二版第二册读写教程unit10课后练习的答案新视野大学英语(第2版)第2册Unit 10答案sectionAVocabulary Task 11.channels2.rescued3.royal4.survival5.crash6.Whichever7.punishment 8.cast 9.endured 10.surrender 11.raid 12.ancient13.sorrow 14.historic 15.spitVocabulary Task 21.over2.in3.in4.on5.under6.on7.down8.for9.after 10.off 11.of 12.from 13.in 15.outBanked Cloze1.O2.H3.M4.J5.K6.G7.C8.A9.F 10.ECloze1-15BSAAC CABCA DABADTranslation Task 11.Suggested answer:I remember the whole thing clearly as though it had happened yesterday.2.Suggested answer:Whichever of them writes the best essay will win the prize.3.Suggested answer:It turned out that the budget provided for a salary increase one year later.4.Suggested answer:She did the same job day after day and yearafter year, but she never complained.5.Suggested answer:She endured all kinds of hardships on the journey; nothing could keep her from finding her lost daughter.6.Suggested answer:Don"t get mixed up with that gang. They have committed many bad things in broad daylight. 1.what kind of music do most people prefer, slow or fast musiccanyou guess why>It"s hard to a difinite conclusion.. it depends. I think this has something to do with people"s moods and personalities. A person in high spirits often enjoys quick-tempo music. When one feels blue, the choice is more likely to be slow, sad music to fit that mook. It semms to me that race may also play a role inour choice of music. Asians, like Chinese , Japanese and Koreans often enjoy melodies. The famous "Liang Zhu:, or "te romance of the butterfly, is a case in point. When we move westward, to India and Europe, for example, we can easily observe th e difference, for the musical rhythm there suddenly accelerates, and the music becomes more lively and upbeat.2.what kind ofmusic do yu prefer, classical music or pop musicpersonally, i prefer pop music, though i have no ovjection to classical music. classical mucic composed by such great musicians as Beethoven and Mozart is indeed brilliant, but few people can really appreciateit , let alone play or sing it. pop music is defferent. as the name suggests, it is popular with all people. we can easily understand pop songs. what"s more anyone can sing pop songs without much difficulty sice they require little professional training. thus, the distance between the singer on the stage and the audience narrow. from time to time, the singer walks down to shake hands with fand, while the latter often sing along with their idols.3. do you thin music can affect people"s lives, for example, to calm people, to cheer them up, or to increase efficiencyGenerally speaking, i think so. at least this is true of most people. mothers tend to hum a soothing lullaby instead of a military march to their babies. at a sports meeting ,the music is often fast and vigorous. seldom is a painfully slow serenade played. withreapect to the issue of effciency, I"m afraid it is rather controversial. quite a few students prefer to listen to a walkman or a diskman while they are doing thier homework. ont the other hand, many demand absolute silence before they can concentrate on their academic work.4. do you like singing karaoke whyi like to sing at a karaoke bar to relax. To my mind, this has at least two advantages. First, i can sing whatever i like to the accompaninment of the music from the TV. Second, after singing loudly or even screaming for a while, i often feel relaxed and forget my worries.Unit 21. do you prefer to watch movies at home or at the theater whythis is a difficult question, for most of us enjoy both. but if you press me with this question, I should say that persoally I prefer watching a DVD at home. It is true that watching a movie at a theater has a number of advantages. Fore example, the sound effects are much better. when yu hear guns firing in a theater, you feel as if you were on a real battelfield. moreover, the presence of an audience can create a good atmosphere. when you watch a comedy on TV by yourself, you may be amused by the funny words and actions, but you are unlikely to laugh out loud. in a theater, on the other hand, you may laugh heartily when the whole audience bursts into wild laughter.in spite of those pluses for the theater, i have to say that i prefer to stay home and watch the same movie on DVD. in this way i feel more relaxed . I don"t have to sit on a chair. Instead, i canlie on a sofa. I can drink tea or coffee while watching the movie.Ican also press the PAUSE button, go to the kitchen or toilet, and then come back to continue the movie. More importantly, if Idon"t understad section of the movie, I can replay it. Obviously, the advantages of viesing at home outweigh the advantages of viewing it a t a theater.2.which do you prefer, contemporary movies or classic movies why different people have dirrerent choices, each with their reasons. grnerally, older people prefer old, classic povies, while young people choose contemporary movies, though we can find many exceptions to that pattern. It is reasonable for older people to favor th traditional movies of their time. When they see such movies, thier memories of the past will be activated. It is not uncommon for us to observe that when elderly people wee things in a movie that they personally experience, they get excited and even shed tears. some doctors say this sort of memory stimulation can have healing effects and slow doun memory loss.while i understand that older people have good reason s to choose old movies, I prefer movies on contemporary themes. New movies are superior in many respects. Ffirst of all, the technoloty has improved, and therefore we can injoy better scienes. Second, the director, actors and actresses ahve all improved their skills. when you look at chinese movies of the 1950s, you may find some actors and actresses talk or act somewhat artficially. third ,contemporary movies are often colser to our dayly olives, and afer seeing them, we can understand our society better. In other words, new movies have better educational value. of course, the advantages of modern movies are not limited only to those I"ve just named. But they are reasonsenough for me to make my choice.3. whick do you prefer, chinese movies or fouengn movieswhyoccasionally I do enjoy seeing a foeign movie, it can take my mind off to a distant land. The outlandish setting often excites me, and different values tend to give me much food for thought. however, my lack of background information often requires me to make too many inferences , and sometimes, i cannot understand certain parts of the movie. in such cases i may feel less entertained.by comparison, I feel more at home with Chinese movies. I can easily associate the sciene and lines with the historical background.I can readily unerstand witty conversation and implied meanings. sometime i can evn predict what is going to happen from the speaker"s tone or gesture. still, it is true that Chinese movies cannot yet compete with Western movies in filming technoloty,. I do hope the next generation of Chinese movies will make further improvement.Unit 31. do you think marriages based on love are more successful than arranged marriagesGenerally speaking, marriages based on love are more successful than arranged marriages. in its long history, China has witnessed many tragic events arising from arranged marriages.however, we should not go to extremes and claim that all arranged marriages are failures, after all, in the past 2023-plus years, most of the arranged marriages did survive, and some of the couples did develop real love after their marriage.as for marriages based on love, they are not without problems. in the contemporary world, arranged marriages have almost disappeared. boys and girls go out on dates and gradually develop a love betweenthem before they get married. Strangely, the divorce rate has kept rising. and the reasons for divorce can be very simple:"we can no longer communicate with each other very well" or "I"ve gotten bored with him or her".In spite of the drawbacks of marriages based on love and the occasional successes of arranged marriages, it is obvious to all that the former are more in conformity with human nature. the traditional pratice of arranged moaaiages should not be restored.2. do you think a girl should marry someone who is much older or younger than she ispersonally, I think a girl should not marry someone who is too old or too young for her. with a wide age gap, a couple may be physically incompatible, and their ways of thinking may differ largely from each other. But I will not go so far as to claim that marriages with a wide age gap will all fail. We can find many perfect matches between a young girl and a middle-aged man.Generally, we would do well to follow nature, and a girl should select her spuse from among people close to her own age. this will prevent many unnecessary difficulties.Unit 41.Both sides spend piles of money to produce cool ads, but in face they will only cancel out each other"s effort. Neither side will gain. Eventually, the large sums spent on advertising will be passed on to consumers. Sounds bad, doesn"t it But we have no alternative. If we alow ads for one product but forbid ads for another, this means unfair competition. As a result, one product will turn out to be successful, while the other is sure to have a poor market.should we baan ads altogether This seems fair to all manufacturers.but consumers will not have enough information about products to make a choice. Worse still, they may not even know a new product has been turned ot, let alone buy it.Perhaps we had better acfcept ads, but we can impose restrictions on them to protect consumers" interests. For exaple, an ad should not include an untruthful statement or exaggeration. also, advertisers should not claim that their products are superior to oters, Restrictions like these may partly compensate for the shortcomings of advertisements. 6:DDCAC trying on a businesssuit in a blouse cotton tights a dress a miniskirt to an office catch more eyes suit atypical boy ACDBC CBAAD BCDAC7:CDABC give me a loan What for support are spending hard up myself let him know get nowhere easy-going generalmanager my luck DCBAB BACDA BDCCC8 BDDCA in prison the greater part of small office things three meals/3 meals get a break play gamesget fired all ears allow on thephonechange places In spite of BCDDA BACBC ADABD9 CCADC driven through right awaysmells of run into going Look out hit it the opposite way BDACC ABDAC BBDAD10 CCDDC two people/2 people What"s up camping Care to snakesscared stiff in the mountains care for Poisonousones like can you or not how loud screamCBDAC CBADA DCBBA新视野大学英语第二版第二册答案(八): 新视野大学英语1(第二版)读写教程答案4-5单元的新视野大学英语(第二版)第1册Unit 4答案VocabularyIII.1. conscious2. depressed3. ranges4. impressed5. encounter6. introduction7. match8. physical9. relaxed 10.contactIV.1. are committed to2. takes…se riously3. was absorbed in4. focus on5. made up his mind6. driving me crazy7. ranging from… to8. at her best9. Then answer the following questions with your own experiences.1) For what two reasons did Gail and Mark live together?2) How did Gail's father and mother react to the news about the wedding plans?3) In what ways are Gail's and her father's views different?Marriage Across the NationsGail and I imagined a quiet wedding. During our two years together we had experienced the usual ups and downs of a couple learning to know, understand, and respect each other. But through it all we had honestly confronted the weaknesses and strengths of each other's characters. Our racial and cultural differences enhanced our relationship and taught us a great deal about tolerance, compromise, and being open with each other. Gail sometimes wondered why I and other blacks were so involved with the racial issue, and I was surprised that she seemed to forget the subtler forms of racial hatred in American society.Gail and I had no illusions about what the future held for us as a married, mixed couple in America. The continual source of our strength was our mutual trust and respect. We wanted to avoid the mistake made by many couples of marrying for the wrong reasons, and only finding out ten, twenty, or thirty years later that they were incompatible, that they hardly took the time to know each other, that they overlooked serious personality conflicts in the expectation that marriage was an automatic way to make everything work out right. That point was emphasized by the fact that Gail's parents, after thirty-five years of marriage, were going through a bitter and painful divorce, which had destroyed Gail and for a time had a negative effect on our budding relationship. When Gail spread the news of our wedding plans to her family she met with some resistance. Her mother, Deborah, all along had been supportive of our relationship, and even joked about when we were going to get married so she could have grandchildren. Instead ofcongratulations upon hearing our news, Deborah counseled Gail to be really sure she was doing the right thing."So it was all right for me to date him, but it's wrong for me to marry him. Is his color the problem, Mom?" Gail subsequently told me she had asked her mother."To start with I must admit that at first I harbored reservations about a mixed marriage, prejudices you might even call them. But when I met Mark I found him a charming and intelligent young guy. Any mother would be proud to have him for a son-in-law. So, color has nothing to do with it. Yes, my friends talk. Some even express shock at what you're doing. But they live in a different world. So you see, Mark's color is not the problem. My biggest worry is that you may be marrying Mark for the same wrong reasons that I married your father. When we met I saw him as my beloved, intelligent, charming, and caring. It was all so new, all so exciting, and we both thought, on the surface at least, that ours was an ideal marriage with every indication that it would last forever. I realized only later that I didn't know my beloved, your father, very well when we married.""But Mark and I have been together more than two years," Gail railed. "We've been through so much together. We've seen each other at ourworst many times. I'm sure that time will only confirm what we feel deeply about each other.""You may be right. But I still think that waiting won't hurt. You're only twenty-five."Gail's father, David, whom I had not yet met personally, approached our decision with a father-knows-best attitude. He basically asked the same questions as Gail's mother: "Why the haste? Who is this Mark? What's his citizenship status?" And when he learned of my problems with the Citizenship department, he immediately suspected that I was marrying his daughter in order to remain in the United States."But Dad, that's harsh," Gail said."Then why the rush? Buy time, buy time," he remarked repeatedly. "Mark has had problems with citizenship before and has always taken care of them himself," Gail defended." In fact, he made it very clear when we were discussing marriage that if I had any doubts about anything, I should not hesitate to cancel our plans."Her father proceeded to quote statistics showing that mixed couples had higher divorce rates than couples of the same race and gave examples of mixed couples he had counseled who were having marital difficulties."Have you thought about the hardships your children would go through?" he asked."Dad, are you a racist?""No, of course not. But you have to be realistic.""Maybe our children will have some problems, but whose children don't? But one thing they'll always have: our love and devotion.""That's idealistic. People can be very cruel toward children from mixed marriages.""Dad, we'll worry about that when the time comes. If we had to resolve all doubt before we acted, very little would ever get done." "Remember, it's never too late to change your mind."新视野大学英语读写教程第二册课文unit4Section APre-reading ActivitiesFirst ListeningPlease listen to a short passage carefully and prepare to answer some questions.Second ListeningListen to the tape again. Then answer the following questions with your own experiences.1) How many foreign high school students travel to study in America each year?2) What are their reasons for studying in America?3) What are the problems the foreign students must cope with when they study in America?Studying AbroadFlight 830. Departure 10:45 p.m.At first glance, this is just another routine flight to Los Angeles, California. Yet for 38 young passengers between fifteen and eighteen years of age, it is the start of a new experience: they will spend 10 months of their lives studying abroad, far from their families.Every year the United States is host to an average of 78,000 foreign high school level students, of which 3,000 are Brazilian. All of them go for the same reasons —to become fluent in English, complete high school, and understand everything they can about the American way of life. At the end of each semester, as long as the students pass final exams, American authorities grant a certificate, which is recognized in Brazil. For the majority, the decision to study abroad is taken only after a period of at least six months of careful planning. "For me," says seventeen - year - old Gloria Marcato, "it's more important to learn to speak English and to live through this experience than it is to receive a certificate from the American government." Others dream of continuing on to college. "I want to be a conductor, and I've already chosen the best American music school," specifies Sandro Rodrigo de Barros.Things, as they say, are not always so easy. Even young students who plan on staying in the United States just long enough to finish two semesters of high school have difficulty finding a host family. Very few arrive in the country with all the details worked out. Gloria Marcato is one of the lucky ones. Before leaving, she had received two letters and some photos of her new "parents." "I think it all depends," says Gloria, "on how you answer the survey sent by the overseas study company here in Brazil. For example, I didn't economize on words. I even wrote about my four dogs, and said I went to church every Sunday." She hit the target. Americans are quite religious (the majority being Christian) and have a special place in their hearts for pets. American families, which host foreign students, are not paid, though they are allowed a small income tax deduction. Each teenager is expected to cover his or her own expenses for articles for personal use, entertainment, long-distance telephone calls and clothing. Towards this, they should budget between $200 to $300 a month. In the event of illness, each student has a medical assistance card. Health insurance does not cover AIDS, abortion and suicide, nor dental and eyesight bills.Basically, most students leave knowing they will have to do without their accustomed parental protection and learn to take care of themselves. However, no one packs his or her bags alone. Parents always give suggestions, or even take on the task themselves. The youngsters frequently show their lack of practice at such things. They take along unnecessary items. One student from the Brazilian South succeeded in stuffing two enormous suitcases to their capacity, and had to cope with her cabin luggage as well. As a result, she couldn't pull them around by herself. For many, the departure at the airport is the worst time. Even though friends and family support the idea of going, it is difficult to saygood-bye at this moment. "It's not easy to leave behind the people you love, especially a boyfriend. I cried at the departure and I cried on the plane too," says Patricia Caglian.Another moment of tension descends while students await the domestic flight that will take them to their temporary home in America. From then on it's everyone for himself. No one really knows how she/he will adapt to such new customs. Though most foreign students remain in California, some are sent to Texas, Arizona, Idaho, Oklahoma or Virginia. After a few days, the general complaint is about the food. "Even though I adapted easily, I really miss rice and beans. The food here doesn't look too nourishing," pines Fernando Andrade. Another big problem encountered by most youngsters is how sick they feel about being away from home. One important regulation of the foreign study program has to do with the time, established by the host "parents", by which the teenagers must arrive home on weekend nights. "They're really tough," says Juliana Martini, who just finished her first semester. "You have to be in by 10:30 p.m., and if you do not obey, you get punished."A few teenagers arrive in the United States with little command of English. In such cases the sole solution is private language study. This in turn pushes up the program cost, estimated at about $3,800, including air fare.新视野大学英语读写教程第二册课文unit5Section APre-reading ActivitiesFirst ListeningPlease listen to a short passage carefully and prepare to answer some questions.Second ListeningListen to the tape again. Then answer the following questions with your own experiences.1) Who are the characters in this story and what is their relationship to each other?2) What are the effects of smoking?3) What does “victory”mean in this story?Weeping for My Smoking DaughterMy daughter smokes. While she is doing her homework, her feet on the bench in front of her and her calculator clicking out answers to her geometry problems, I am looking at the half-empty package of Camels tossed carelessly close at hand. I pick them up, take them into the kitchen, where the light is better, and study them —they're filtered, for which I am grateful. My heart feels terrible. I want to weep. In fact, I doweep a little, standing there by the stove holding one of the instruments, so white, so precisely rolled, that could cause my daughter's death. When she smoked Marlboros and Players I hardened myself against feeling so bad; nobody I knew ever smoked these brands. She doesn't know this, but it was Camels that my father, her grandfather, smoked. But before he smoked cigarettes made by manufacturers —when he was very young and very poor, with glowing eyes —he smoked Prince Albert tobacco in cigarettes he rolled himself. I remember the bright-red tobacco tin, with a picture of Queen Victoria's partner, Prince Albert, dressed in a black dress coat and carrying a cane.By the late forties and early fifties no one rolled his own anymore (and few women smoked) in my hometown of Eatonton, Georgia. The tobacco industry, coupled with Hollywood movies in which both male and female heroes smoked like chimneys, completely won over people like my father, who were hopelessly hooked by cigarettes. He never looked as fashionable as Prince Albert, though; he continued to look like a poor, overweight, hard working colored man with too large a family, black, with a very white cigarette stuck in his mouth.I do not remember when he started to cough. Perhaps it was unnoticeable at first, a little coughing in the morning as he lit his first cigarette upon getting out of bed. By the time I was sixteen, mydaughter's age, his breath was a wheeze, embarrassing to hear; he could not climb stairs without resting every third or fourth step. It was not unusual for him to cough for an hour.My father died from "the poor man's friend", pneumonia, one hard winter when his lung illnesses had left him low. I doubt he had much lung left at all, after coughing for so many years. He had so little breath that, during his last years, he was always leaning on something. I remembered once, at a family reunion, when my daughter was two, that my father picked her up for a minute —long enough for me to photograph them —but the effort was obvious. Near the very end of his life, and largely because he had no more lungs, he quit smoking. He gained a couple of pounds, but by then he was so slim that no one noticed. When I travel to Third World countries I see many people like my father and daughter. There are large advertisement signs directed at them both: the tough, confident or fashionable older man, the beautiful, "worldly" young woman, both dragging away. In these poor countries, as in American inner cities and on reservations, money that should be spent for food goes instead to the tobacco companies; over time, people starve themselves of both food and air, effectively weakening and hooking their children, eventually killing themselves. I read in thenewspaper and in my gardening magazine that the ends of cigarettes are so poisonous that if a baby swallows one, it is likely to die, and that the boiled water from a bunch of them makes an effective insecticide. There is a deep hurt that I feel as a mother. Some days it is a feeling of uselessness. I remember how carefully I ate when I was pregnant, how patiently I taught my daughter how to cross a street safely. For what, I sometimes wonder; so that she can struggle to breathe through most of her life feeling half her strength, and then die of self-poisoning, as her grandfather did? There is a quotation from a battered women's shelter that I especially like: "Peace on earth begins at home." I believe everything does. I think of a quotation for people trying to stop smoking: "Every home is a no smoking zone." Smoking is a form of self-battering that also batters those who must sit by, occasionally joke or complain, and helplessly watch. I realize now that as a child I sat by, through the years, and literally watched my father kill himself: surely one such victory in my family, for the prosperous leaders who own the tobacco companies, is enough.新视野大学英语读写教程第二册课文unit6Section APre-reading ActivitiesFirst ListeningPlease listen to a short passage carefully and prepare to answer some questions.Second ListeningListen to the tape again. Then answer the following questions with your own experiences.1) What are some of the ways names can make a difference?2) In what way can teachers be guilty of name prejudice?3) What does the writer suggest you do if your name does not suit you? As His Name Is, So Is He!For her first twenty-four years, she'd been known as Debbie —a name that didn't suit her good looks and elegant manner. "My name has always made me think I should be a cook," she complained. "I just don't feel like a Debbie."One day, while filling out an application form for a publishing job, the young woman impulsively substituted her middle name, Lynne, for her first name Debbie. "That was the smartest thing I ever did," she says now. "As soon as I stopped calling myself Debbie, I felt more comfortable with myself... and other people started to take me more seriously." Two yearsafter her successful job interview, the former waitress is now a successful magazine editor. Friends and associates call her Lynne.Naturally, the name change didn't cause Debbie/Lynne's professional achievement —but it surely helped if only by adding a bit ofself-confidence to her talents. Social scientists say that what you're called can affect your life. Throughout history, names have not merely identified people but also described them. " …As his name is, so is he..." says the Bible, and Webster's Dictionary includes the following definition of name: "a word or words expressing some quality considered characteristic or descriptive of a person or a thing, often expressing approval or disapproval." Note well "approval or disapproval". For better or worse, qualities such as friendliness or reserve, plainness or charm may be suggested by your name and conveyed to other people before they even meet you.Names become attached to specific images, as anyone who's been called "a plain Jane" or "just an average Joe" can show. The latter name particularly bothers me since my name is Joe, which some think makes me more qualified to be a baseball player than, say, an art critic. Yet, despite this disadvantage, I did manage to become an art critic for a time. Even so, one prominent magazine consistently refused to print "Joe" inmy by-line, using my first initials, J.S., instead. I suspect that if I were a more refined Arthur or Adrian, the name would have appeared complete. Of course, names with a positive sense can work for you, even encourage new acquaintances. A recent survey showed that American men thought Susan to be the most attractive female name, while women believed Richard and David were the most attractive for men. One woman I know turned down a blind date with a man named Harry because "he sounded dull". Several evenings later, she came up to me at a party, pressing for an introduction to a very impressive man; they'd been exchanging glances all evening. "Oh," I said. "You mean Harry." She was ill at ease. Though most of us would like to think ourselves free from such prejudiced notions, we're all guilty of name stereotyping to some extent. Confess: Wouldn't you be surprised to meet a carpenter named Nigel? A physicist called Bertha? A Pope Mel? Often, we project name-based stereotypes on people, as one woman friend discovered while taking charge of a nursery - school's group of four-year olds. "There I was, trying to get a little active boy named Julian to sit quietly and read a book —and pushing a thoughtful creature named Rory to play ball. I had their personalities confused because of their names!" Apparently, such prejudices can affect classroom achievement as well. In a study conducted by Herbert Harari of San Diego State University, andJohn McDavid of Georgia State University, teachers gave consistently lower grades on essays apparently written by boys named Elmer and Hubert than they awarded to the same papers when the writer's names were given as Michael and David. However, teacher prejudice isn't the only source of classroom difference. Dr. Thomas V. Busse and Louisa Seraydarian of Temple University found those girls with names such as Linda, Diane, Barbara, Carol, and Cindy performed better on objectively graded IQ and achievement tests than did girls with less appealing names. (A companion study showed girls' popularity with their peers was also related to the popularity of their names —although the connection was less clear for boys.)Though your parents probably meant your name to last a lifetime, remember that when they picked it they'd hardly met you, and the hopes and dreams they valued when they chose it may not match yours. If your name no longer seems to fit you, don't despair; you aren't stuck with the label. Movie stars regularly change their names, and with some determination, you can, too.。

The boy¡¯s reputation as a musical talent grew fast. At five, he was composing music. Form that time on, Mozart was performing n concerts and writing music. By his early teens, he had mastered the piano, violin and harpsichord, and was writing symphonies and operas. His first major opera was performed in Milan in 1770, when he was only fourteen. At fifteen, Mozart became the conductor for an orchestra in Salzburg. In 1781, he left for Vienna, where he was in great demand as both a performer and a composition teacher. His first opera was a success. But life was not easy because he was a poor businessman, and his finances were always in a bad state. His music from the next decade was not very popular, and he eventually fell back on his teaching jobs for a living. In 1788 he stopped performing in public, preferring only to compose. Let¡¯s TalkThe Origin of the Song ¡°Happy Birthday to You¡±The story of the song ¡°Happy Birthday to You¡± Began as a sweet one, but later became bitter. Two sisters, Mildred Hill, a teacher at a kindergarten, and Dr. Patty Hill, the principal of the same school, wrote a song together for the children, entitled ¡°Good Morning to All¡±. When Mildred combined her musical talents with her sister¡¯s knowledge in the area of kindergarten education, ¡®Good Morning to All¡± was sure to be a success. The sister published the song in a collection entitled ¡°Song Stories of the Kindergarten¡± in 1893. Thirty-one years later, after Dr. Patty Hill became the head of the Department of Kindergarten Education at Columbia University¡¯s Teachers College, a gentleman by the name Robert Coleman published the song, without the sisters¡¯ permission. He added a second part, which is the familiar ¡°Happy Birthday to You¡±. Mr. Coleman¡¯s addition of the second part made the song popular and, finally, the sisters¡± original first part disappeared. ¡°Happy Birthday to You¡± had altogether replaced the sisters¡¯ original song ¡°Good Morning to All¡±. In 1916 Patty took legal action against Mr. Coleman. In court, she succeeded in proving that hey were the real owners of the song.1. teacher at a kindergarten2. Good Morning to All3. There were two sisters: one was Mildred Hill, and the other Patty Hill. The former had great musical talents, while the latter had knowledge of kindergarten education. Bu combining their abilities, the two produced a song called ¡°Good Morning to All¡±. It was a success, and later published in a collection of songs for kindergartens.Thirty-one years later a man named Coleman published the song without the sisters¡¯ permission. To make things worse, he added a second part, which is the present ¡°Happy Birthday to You¡±. This new song soon became popular and eventually it replaced the sisters¡¯ first part altogether. Then, in 1916, Patty took legal action against Coleman. In court she managed to prove that she and her sister really owned the song.VI. Further Listening and SpeakingTask 1: KaraokeDalin: It¡¯s Mike¡¯s birthday on Friday, so a bunch of us are going to go to the karaoke bar. Would you like to come with us?Laura: Karaoke bar? You have a special place just for singing? In America, bars sometimes have a karaoke night where the customers can sing a song, but we haven¡¯t special karaoke bars!Dalin: Really? In China, karaoke is a very popular way for friends ro spend time together. We can select the music that ur group enjoys. We mostly sing pop songs. Laura: Do you sing individually or in groups? Singing is not a very in thing, so I don¡¯t sing very well.1. F2. F3.T4.T5.FTask 2: When was music first sent down a telephone line?So you think downloading music from the Internet through a phone line is a really cool modern thing? Not so. In 1896, Thaddeus Cahill Filed a patent on the instrum ent for transmitting music electronically, and until 1914 he sent music signals down telephone lines with this instrument. And he wasn¡¯t even the first. Elisha Gray transmitted music over a telephone line in 1876, which was the same year the telephone was invented. Gray invented the first electronic music instrument in 1874, calling it the ¡°Musical Telegraph¡±. Alexander Graham Bell also designed an experimental ¡°Electric Harp¡± for speech to be transmitted over a telephone line using technology similar to Gray¡¯s. Bell was a speech teacher for the deaf. In 1879 he created an instrument to measure hearing loss. That is why the degrees of loudness came to be measured in bels or decibels.5-4-2-1-3Task 3: Thank You for the MusicI¡¯m nothing special, in fact I¡¯m a bit of a boreIf I tell a joke, you¡¯re probably heard it beforeBut I have a talent, a wonderful thing¡®Cause everyone listens when I start to singI¡¯m so grateful and proudAll I want is to sing it out loudSo I sayThank you for the music, the songs I¡¯m singingThanks for all the joy they¡¯re bringingWho can live without it, I ask in all honestlyWhat would life beWithout a song or a dance what are weSo I say thank you for the musicFor giving it to meMother says I was a dancer before I could walkShe says I began to sing long before I could talkAnd I¡¯ve often wondered, how did it all startWho found out that nothing can capture a heartLike a melody canWell, whoever it was, I¡¯m a fanSo I sayThank you for the music, the songs I¡¯m singing¡-SpeakingMusical MemoriesTony: Listen! Quick, turn up the radio! Isn¡¯t that ¡°Can You Feel the Love Tonight?¡±Nancy: Yeah, it is, but what¡¯s the big deal?Tony: When I was a little boy, my grandmother took me to see the movie The Li on King. That¡¯s the Elton John song from the movie.Nancy: I still can¡¯t understand why it¡¯s so important to you.Tony: Because it was the first movie I ever saw with my grandma and because I really loved spending time with her. It is my favorite song of all times!Nancy: The first time Tom and I went on a date, we went to see Titanic. I always think of the song ¡°My Heart Will Go On¡± as our song! Whenever I hear it, I think of that night.Tony: Oh, I can understand why you love that song! Isn¡¯t it interesting all the memories we connect with songs?II. Listening Skills1. W: From what I can remember, the director asked us to rehearse this a hundred times. M: One hundred times? Is the director out of his mind?Q: What does the man imply?2. M: Do you think we have made enough food for the party?W: The refrigerator is about to explode.Q: What does the woman imply?3. W: She said she might become a famous movie star.M: Yes, and pigs might fly.Q: What does the man mean?4. M: Although the man often plays a bad guy in movies, in real life he has a heart of gold.W: So does a hard-boiled egg.Q: What does the woman mean?5. W: What a beautiful sunset!M: Don¡¯t blink. I¡¯m crazy about Harry Potter. Have you heard that J.K. Rowling has added another book to the series?Amy: She¡¯s already written Book Seven? I¡¯m still waiting for Book Five¡-Peter: I know. Who isn¡¯t? At least we have the movies to watch in the meantime. Amy: By the way, have you seen the trailer yet?Peter: Yeah. It was great! I think the movie itself will be really scary.Amy: It surely will! All that writing on the wall in blood¡- It scares me to death just to think about it!Both the girl and the boy are excited/crazy about the movie and the hero Harry Potter. The boy heard that the writer J.K. Rowling has written the latest book, which is Book Seven, though the girl is still waiting for Book Five. The boy has been the trailer and believes the film will be scary. The girl shares that view because of the writing on the wall in blood.Task 2: A Great ActorThere was once a great actor who could no longer remember his lines. After several years of searching, he finally found a theater that was willing to give him a try. The director said, ¡°This is the most important part, and it has only one line. At the opening you walk onto stage carrying a rose. You hold the rose to your nose with just one finger and thumb, smell it deeply and then say the line on praise of the rose: ¡®Ah, the sweet smell of my love.¡¯¡± The actor was excited. All day long before the play he practiced his line over and over again. Finally, the time came. The curtain went up, the actor walked onto the stage, looked at the audience, and with great emotion said the line, ¡°Ah, the sweet smell of my love.¡± The audience exploded in laughter. Only the director was furious! ¡°Ahhhhhh! You damned fool!¡± he cried. ¡°You¡¯ve ruined my play! You¡¯ve ruined me!¡± The actor was puzzled, ¡°What happened? Did I forget my line?¡± ¡°No!¡± shouted the director. ¡°You forget the rose!¡±1.D2.C3.D4.A5.BTask 3: Movie ReviewsI love movies! And after I see them, I like to comment on them. These are movies I saw this year I would like to recommend: Among comedies I highly recommend ¡°Monsoon Wedding¡±. It¡¯s an Indian movie. The story is about an Indian wedding. Preparations for the wedding bring out funny and sad situations touching on love and a past rape. This movie shows some of the wonderful customs of India, and the importance of family and love. It¡¯s great!Among dramas, I like ¡°Adaptation¡±. It is an excellent movie! But for me the first part of the movie was too fast to follow. I hope to see it again on DVD with captions.¡°The Pianist¡± is set in the Second World War. It¡¯s about a young Polish-Jewish pianist, who lives in Warsaw with his family. The Nazis sent his family to die in the concentration camps. He was safe, but would have died without unusually good luck and the kindness of a few non-Jews. This is a powerful movie with thought-provoking themes.¡°Rabbit-Proof Fence¡± is set in the 1930s in Australia, and it¡¯s based on real events. It is about three native girls who are separated from their families by the racist police who send them to special centers. There the girls are taught practical skills, and the government tries to integrate them into white Australian society. They can away from the camp and walked 1,500 miles to find their mothers. Speaking OutModel 1 Will you come with me?John: Laura, I am wondering if you¡¯re free tomorrow night.Laura: Well, I guess I am. Why?John: I¡¯ve got two Star Wars premiere tickets. Will you come with me?Laura: Yeah, definitely! Thanks for inviting me!John: It¡¯s my pleasure.Laura: I really wanted to see Star Wars on the opening night, but the tickets were sold out. How did you manage to get hold of them?John: A friend of mine works at the ¡°Pepsi¡± headquarters, which is a major sponsor of the movie. So he was able to get the tickets for free.Laura: Wow, people are paying as much as $200 each on the black market. I¡¯m flattered you went through all this trouble just for me.John: You¡¯re welcome. Now Your TurnSAMPLE DIALOGA: Hi, are you busy this weekend?B: Yes. What¡¯s on your mind?A: I¡¯ve got two tickets for the car exhibition. Would you like to go with me? B: Sure. Thanks for your invitation.A: It¡¯s nothing.B: I¡¯ve been wanting to see exhibition, but it was not at all easy to get a ticket. How did you manage to get two tickets?A: A friend of mine works at the exhibition center. She was able to get three free tickets.B: Wow, people are paying almost 100 yuan for a ticket on the black market. Thank you very much indeed for inviting me.A: No problem.Model 2 What did you think about the movie?John: So¡- what did you think about the movie?Laura: Well¡- I think this Star Wars episode is an excellent piece of work, but not as good as theprevious ones.John: Really? But I think this Star Wars episode was incredible!Laura: Why do you think so?John: Well, one of the most spectacular things about it was the special effects. State-of-the-artspecial effects were the main reason for the success of the previous episodes. Laura: You¡¯re right. The special effects were amazing! And I like the fact that they created somany fantastic settings and other-worldly costumes, weapons and creatures. Now Your TurnSAMPLE DIALOGA: What did you think about The Lion King?B: Well¡- I think this cartoon was pretty good, but not as good as Beauty and the Beast. It¡¯s a killer flick.A: Really? But I think The Lion King was unbelievably good.B: I thought it was just OK. Why do you think so?A: Well, it¡¯s so interesting that the lives of the lions were similar to the lives of human beings.B: You¡¯re right. The murder in The Lion King was almost the same as the murder in the Shakespearean play Hamlet.Model 3 The plot is first-class.John: It¡¯s kind of cool that they still used the same Star Wars theme song for this movie.Laura: Yeah! It just reminds me of the previous Star Wars scenes.John: I know exactly what you mean! Hearing that song makes me think of the past.Laura: I think the plot was first-class. But I don¡¯t think the character development was that strong.John: Do you think that has anything to do with the casting of the movie?Laura: No, the casting was great; the actors are excellent, but I think the acting was a little weak. They just didn¡¯t have a lot of funny or meaningful lines. John: Well, maybe, but I liked the little kid that played ¡°Skywalker¡±. I can¡¯t imagine anyone else playing that part.Laura: Yeah, I liked him too. He¡¯s soooo cute! Now Your TurnSAMPLE DIALOGA: What do you think about the movie?B: I think the plot was first-class. But I don¡¯t think the character development was so strong.A: Yes, the characterization was rather weak. Do you think it is because of the casting of the movie?B: No, the cast was strong. But the acting was rather poor. A nd the lines are not interesting at all.A: Well, maybe. But I liked the heroine of the movie. She is excellent.B: Yeah, I liked her too. She¡¯s adorable!V. Let¡¯s TalkAlfred HitchcockAlfred Hitchcock was a British director. His movies frequently show innocent people caught up in situations beyond their control or even understanding.Hitchcock preferred the use of suspense in his movies. In surprise, the director provides the viewer with frightening things. In suspense, the director tells or shows things to the audience which the characters in the movie do not know, and then skillfully builds up tension around what will happen when the characters finally learn the truth. Hitchcock had a great sense of humor. Once at a French airport, a suspicious customs official looked at Hitchcock¡¯s passport, which was marked simply PRODUCER. The curious official asked, ¡°And what do you produce?¡± ¡°Gooseflesh.¡± replied Hitchcock.Alfred Hitchcock always managed to make a brief appearance in his movies: He was sometimes getting on a bus, or crossing a street, pr walking in front of a store, or across the courtyard in an apartment. However, for the movie Lifeboat in 1944, he was faced with a difficult problem. The entire movie was set in a lifeboat out at sea, and there were only a few characters in the boat. Originally, he wanted to float by as a dead body, but he was afraid he¡¯d sink! His clever solution was to place a photograph of himself in a newspaper that one of the characters read during the course of the movie.1. A2.C3.DVI. Furthering Listening and SpeakingListeningTask 1: Only One LinePeter has always wanted to be an actor, but never succeeded because he had a hard time memorizing lines. A friend of his told him about a small part in a play. He promised Peter that he could do it because he¡¯s only have to remember one line. Peter decided to take the part. His only line was, ¡°Listen, I hear the guns roar!¡± Peter practiced and practiced, ¡°Listen, I hear the guns roar!¡± On the opening night of the play Peter was very nervous. Backstage, he practiced his line, over and over again, ¡°Listen, I hear the guns roar! Listen, I hear the guns roar!¡± Finally came his turn, Peter went onto stage. RowlingQ: How did you get the idea for Harry Potter?A: I was traveling on a train between Manchester and London and the idea for Harry just fell into my head. At that point it was essentially the idea for a body who didn¡¯t know he was a wizard.Q: Did you always plan to write Harry¡¯s story in more than one book? If so, how many? A: I always conceived it as a seven-book series because I decided that it would take seven years, from age eleven to seventeen, inclusive, to train as a wizard, and each of the books would deal with one year of Harry¡¯s life at the school.Q: Any clues about the next book?A: I don¡¯t want to i\give anything away, but I tell you that the books are getting darker. Harry¡¯s going to have quite a bit to deal with as he gets older. Sorry if they get too scary!Q: Of the many things you must have heard people say about Harry Potter, what are some of your favorites?A: My very favorite was from a twelve-year-old Scottish girl who came to hear me read at the Edinburgh book festival. At the end of the festival, the queue for signing was very long. When the girl finally reached me, she said, ¡°I didn¡¯t WANT there to be so many people here, because this is MY books!¡± That is exactly how I feel about my favorite books. Unit 1Section APre-reading ActivitiesFirst ListeningPlease listen to a short passage carefully and prepare to answer some questions.Second ListeningListen to the tape again. Then answer the following questions with your own experiences.1) What precious resource do Americans value and save?2) What are the three kinds of behaviors that Americans consider to be a waste of time?3) In what different ways do Americans approach time in business relations?Time-Conscious AmericansAmericans believe no one stands still. If you are not moving ahead, you are falling behind. This attitude results in a nation of people committed to researching, experimenting and exploring. Time is one of the two elements that Americans save carefully, the other being labor."We are slaves to nothing but the clock," it has been said. Time is treated as if it were something almost real. We budget it, save it, waste it, steal it, kill it, cut it, account for it; we also charge for it. It is a precious resource. Many people have a rather acute sense of the shortness of each lifetime. Once the sands have run out of a person's hourglass, they cannot be replaced. We want every minute to count.A foreigner's first impression of the U.S. is likely to be that everyone is in a rush — often under pressure. City people always appear to be hurrying to get where they are going, restlessly seeking attention in a store, or elbowing others as they try to complete their shopping. Racing through daytime meals is part of the pace of life in this country. Working time is considered precious. Others in public eating-places are waiting for you to finish so they, too, can be served and get back to work within the time allowed. You also find drivers will be abrupt and people will push past you. You will miss smiles, brief conversations, and small exchanges with strangers. Don't take it personally. This is because people value time highly, and they resent someone else "wasting" it beyond a certain appropriate point. Many new arrivals to the States will miss the opening exchanges of a business call, for example. They will miss the ritual interaction that goes with a welcoming cup of tea or coffee that may be a convention in their own country. They may miss leisurely business chats in a restaurant or coffee house. Normally, Americans do not assess their visitors in such relaxed surroundings over extended small talk; much less do they take them out for dinner, or around on the golf course while they develop a sense of trust. Since we generally assess and probe professionally rather than socially, we start talking business very quickly. Time is, therefore, always ticking in our inner ear.Consequently, we work hard at the task of saving time. We produce a steady flow of labor-saving devices; we communicate rapidly through faxes, phone calls or emails rather than through personal contacts, which though pleasant, take longer —especially given our traffic-filled streets. We, therefore, save most personal visiting for after-work hours or for social weekend gatherings. To us the impersonality of electronic communication has little or no relation to the significance of the matter at hand. In some countries no major business is conducted without eye contact, requiring face-to-face conversation. In America, too, a final agreement will normally be signed in person. However, people are meeting increasingly on television screens, conducting "teleconferences" to settle problems not only in this country but also — by satellite — internationally. The U. S. is definitely a telephone country. Almost everyone uses the telephone to conduct business, to chat with friends, to make or break social appointments, to say "Thank you", to shop and to obtain all kinds of information. Telephones save the feet and endless amounts of time. This is due partly to the fact that the telephone service is superb here, whereas the postal service is less efficient. Some new arrivals will come from cultures where it is considered impolite to work too quickly. Unless a certain amount of time is allowed to elapse, it seems in their eyes as if the task being considered were insignificant, not worthy of proper respect. Assignments are, consequently, felt to be given added weight by the passage of time. In the U. S., however, it is taken as a sign of skillfulness or being competent to solve a problem, or fulfill a job successfully, with speed. Usually, the more important a task is, the more capital, energy, and attention will be poured into it in order to "get it moving".Words: 689NEW WORDSbudgetn.

Para. 2

Para.

Para.

Para.

Para. 5 因此,我们千方百计地节约时间。

新视野大学英语读写教程第二册(第二版)Pre-reading听力原文Unit 1 第一单元SECTION A Pre-reading ActivitiesTime is the same in all places, but people’s relationship with time is different from country to country. In the United States, time is a real, precious resource, and every minute counts. People here are always in a rush and under pressure. There are no short conversations or small exchanges with strangers because people think it is a waste of time. Does this sound like your country If it does not, and if you don’t think you w ould like such a place, you would most likely be unhappy in the United States, where doing things quickly is seen as a skill.1. Time.2. Short conversations or small exchanges with strangers.3. (Open-ended.)Unit 2 第二单元SECTION A Pre-reading ActivitiesWhen I think back about the many people who have influenced me during my life, I often think of one person who showed his passion through his commitment to my success. I think of my coach, the man who taught and inspired me not only how to run the mile as fast as I could, but also how to work at something a little every day until greatness is achieved. Through his continuous efforts, I gradually came to an understanding of the meaning of commitment, which is really what love is all about.1. Her coach.2. How to run the mile as fast as she could and how to work at something a little every day until greatness is achieved.3. (Open-ended.)Unit 3 第三单元SECTION A Pre-reading ActivitiesGail and Mark were from different cultural and racial background. They had been together for two years and had learned to understand and respect each other. Recently they decided to marry and they told the news to Gail’s parents. To their surprise, they met with some resistance. Gail’s mother was worried that they might be mar rying for the wrong reasons and advised her daughter to wait. Gail’s father also opposed the marriage because he thought that Mark wasmarrying his daughter so that he could remain in the United States. Such concerns are understandable. After all, marriage across nations may have its problem of one kind or another.1. Gail’s mother was worried that they might be marrying for the wrong reason.2. Mark wanted to marry Gail so that he could remain in the United States.3. (Open-ended.)Unit 4 第四单元SECTION A Pre-reading ActivitiesI wrote a story about love, and I hope you like it. The story is about a young soldier who is waiting to see a woman he has fallen in love with. I suppose it’s a lot like my other stories in that it has a happy ending. You might laugh at me for writing stories that are so sweet. But, you see, I am a deep believer in love, and I am hopeful about everyone finding it. Without love, I really don’t know what the purpose of living would be.4. He is waiting to see a woman he has fallen in love with.5. A happy ending.6. (Open-ended.)Unit 5第五单元SECTION A Pre-reading ActivitiesToday, I want to talk about the historic opportunity we now have to protect our children from an even more deadly threat: smoking. Smoking kills more people every day than AIDS, alcohol, car accidents, murders, drugs and fires combined. Nearly 90% percent of those smokers lit their first cigarette before they turned 18. In the past few years we’ve worked to stop our children from smoking before they start, to reduce their access to tobacco products, and to restrict tobacco companies from advertising to young people. If we do these, we’ll cut teen smoking by almost half over the next five years.1. Before they turned 18.2. To reduce children’s access to tobacco pro ducts, and to restrict tobacco companies from advertising to your people.3. ( Open-ended)自由作答,陈述各自的观点.Unit 6 第六单元SECTION A Pre-reading ActivitiesPre-reading ActivitiesThere are various reasons for our final decision on what name to give to a baby. For some it may simply because they come across a name that they feel is “it”. But for most people it may be a process of careful selection based on meaning, tradition, or parents’ wishes for their child. Whatever the naming method, a given name follows the child throughout his or her life. How can parents decide on a name that will satisfy them Consider the following: First, consider the area the child will grow up in when selecting a name. Second, choose a name based on some personal meaning so when th e child asks why they’re named so, the parents will have a reasonable explanation. Finally, before deciding on a name, get opinions of people around! Chances are, if your friends and family members look shocked when you share your name selection, your child will probably be horrified as well.1.Meaning, tradition, or parents’ wishes for their child.2. Three. Get opinions of people around.3. (Open-ended.)Unit 7 第七单元SECTION A Pre-reading ActivitiesStress can kill you. Being tense can damage your heart, so it is wise to take charge of your life and realize you cannot control everything. But you can control stress which is caused by fear, uncertainty, doubt, and lack of control. Anger may also be the root of this stress, especially for hard-working professional women and people with no goals in life. To relax and take control of your life, try the NICE factors: new, interesting, challenging experiences. And follow Ben Franklin’s example by writing down the major goals you want to achieve in your life. For the problems over which you have no control, you have to learn to go with the flow. can be caused by fear, uncertainty, doubt, lack of control, and anger..2. The NICE factors are new, interesting, challenging experiences.3. (open-ended.)Unit 8 第八单元SECTION A Pre-reading ActivitiesWhat is life about We work hard everyday to make more money, to gain power and recognition. We neglect our health, time with our family, the surrounding beauty and the hobbies we love. One day when we look back, we w ill realize that we don’t really need that much. We then willrealize how much we have missed in life! Work definitely is not the whole of life. Work is meant to keep us living so that we enjoy the beauty and pleasures of life.Life is a balance of work and play, family and personal time. Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the aim of human existence. So, live a balanced lifestyle and enjoy life!health, time with our family, the surrounding beauty and the hobbies we love.2. Happiness.3. (open-ended.)Unit 9 第九单元SECTION A Pre-reading ActivitiesI wasn’t the brightest kid in my graduating class. I didn’t even attend a famous school. What I did have, though, was a supportive family, and with their help, I was able to become one of the top lawyers in the state of Florida and then a Florida State Supreme Court Justice. And you know what It wasn’t as hard as you may think. It started with a clear set of rules: always get up early, always work hard, always do things honestly, always try to improve on the day before and never give up. When I was younger, I didn’t always remember the rules myself, so my father had to remind me. After a while, though, the rules became habit and everything else sort of fell into place.1.
