The President gets about 4,000 letters every week. He answers everyone who writes to him on the special White House paper. But he doesn’t need a lot of time for it. In fact, he only gives 20 minutes a week to look at his personal correspondence. He has the most modern secretary in the world to help him.
It’s a computer, worth $800,000, which has its own room on the first floor of the White House. It has a bank of electronic pens which write as the President writes, in his favorite light blue ink. Each letter the President receives gets a number, according to the type of answer it needs. The pens then write the correct reply for it, according to the number. Passage 9
In one way, it may be thought that failure is a part of life. In another, failure (失败) may be viewed as a step towards success.
The “spider-story” is often told as an example of this. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the 13th century, was hiding in a cave from the English. He watched a spider (蜘蛛) making a web. Bruce is said to have gained confidence (信心) from this sight and to have gone on to defeat the English. Edison, too, the inventor of the light bulb, made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one.
So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were the conditions right? Were you in top form yourself? What can you change so that things will go right the next time?
Second, i s the goal you’re trying to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking about what your real goals may be. Think about this question: “If I do succeed in this, where will it get me?” This may help to prevent failure in the things you shouldn’t be doing an yway.
The third thing to bear in mind about failure is that it’s part of life. Learn to “live with yourself” even though you may have failed. Remember, “You can’t win them all.”
1. Robert Bruce was mentioned in the passage to show that _______.
A) nature will help us if we are hard-working

B) one should learn lessons from failures
C) one’s failure is another’s success
D) one should take failures seriously
5. This passage is mainly about _______.
A) two great men B) two sides of failure
C) the right attitude toward failure D) ways to avoid failure DCABC
Passage 10
All our dreams have something to do with our emotions, fears, wishes, needs and memories. But something on the “outside” may affect what we dream. If a person is hungry, or tired, or cold, his dreams may include a feeling of this kind. If the covers on your body, such as a quilt
(被子)or a blanket(毯子), have slipped off your bed, you may dream that you are sleeping or resting on the ice and snow.
So what you dream usually comes from something that has effect on you while you are sleeping and it may also use the wishes and interests you have now. This is why children are likely to dream of fairies, hungry people of food, homesick soldiers of their families, and prisoners of freedom.
There are some scientists who have made a special study of why we dream, what we dream and what those dreams mean. Their explanation (解释)of dreams is not affected by everyone, but it offers an interesting way to look at dreams. They believe that dreams are mostly expressions of wishes that did not come true. In other words, a dream is a way of having your wishes carried out.
1. Which of the following is something on the “outside”?
A) Emotions. B) Memories. C) Feeling hungry. D) Wishes.
2. Someone may dream of sleeping or resting on the ice and snow if
________.

4. According to the passage, some scientists have studied all of the following EXCEPT _______.
A) the reason of our dreams B) the content(内容)of our dreams
C) the meanings of our dreams D) the roles of our dreams

A) Someone who has no wishes.
B) Someone who goes to bed hungry.
C) Someone who is frightened during the day.
D) Someone who has a strong interest in something.
