I am highly honored to be your guide, and would be very pleased to help you to get to know about how our university has developed into what it is now. This museum has 5 halls, and we are now in the Introduction Hall. This Hall is to illustrate the pedagogical ideas we uphold and the educational philosophy we follow. If you look straight ahead, we can see our university Logo on the ceiling; the white part of this logo is in the shape of a boat, which is sailing on the blue sea. This logo indicates the development of our university will be smooth and swift. On the right, it is a brief sketch of the historical development of our university, together with our philosophy of schooling; our university has a profound history which spans more than 100 years. And the university anthem is on the left. Now we will present you this anthem in Chinese. (扬子江边黄家湖畔)Our university motto is here: “Virtue, Erudition, Practicality and Steadiness”. These exhibitions are to demonstrate our university’s strong association with the iron and steel industry and the spirit of our university, which has been summarized as “Perseverance in hardships, readiness for duty, endeavor for excellence, and consistency in words and deeds”.Now, would you please follow me to the second section? There, we shall see the “incubation years” of our university. Wuhan University of Science and Technology, or WUST, dates back to the Hubei gongyi xuetang (Hubei Technical Institute) in 1898 founded by Zhang Zhidong (1837-1909), governor general of Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong and Guangxi Provinces in the late Qing Dynasty. This is Governor Zhang and his application document to the Emperor for approval of the school founding. Hubei Technical School was one of the earliest of its kind in China offering technical education, and it marks the first page ofour University. Its campus a t that time was located in today’s Wuchang District, which is here on the map, about 15 kilometers away from here. The tile here was used for the construction of Hubei Technical School, it has also been awarded as the national cultural relic. There are all together 26 items in this museum have won this title.Due to historical reasons, Hubei Technical School moved its campus several times and changed its name more than once. During this period, many well-known scientists and scholars taught in the School, including Li Siguang, a geologist; among its famous students were Zhao Shimei, the maker of the revolutionary flag in the Wuchang Uprising of the 1911 Revolution; there are other professors being the teachers of our university. Bao Ding, an architect; He Lvting, a musician; and Pan Liangru, a scientist. In the summer of 1938, when the invading Japanese army approached to Wuhan, for the safety of its teachers and students, Hubei Technical School merged with other schools and became the Advanced Industry Branch School of Hubei United School, which moved first to western Hubei, later to Sichuan, and finally settled in Enshi Prefecture of Hubei Province. And this is the anthem of Hubei United School, the lyrics of which reflects the students and teachers’ concer ns about the war and their hope for the future. As the Anti-Japanese War came to the end, the School moved back to Wuhan in 1946. Starting from scratch, it began the reconstruction work, under the new name of the Provincial Hanyang Vocational School of Advanced Industry. These pictures show the students conducting experiments and extracurricular activities. The items in this showcase are the textbooks, examination papers, and graduation papers of students at that time. The third part of the exhibitions is devoted to the years after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. After the liberation of Wuhan in 1949, the School changed its name to Wuchang Advanced Industrial School. It was one of the top four advanced schools in the country at that time. From these pictures, you might get a general idea of what the School was like. Please have a look at these photo, they were shot during the sessions of the National People’s Congress. The year 1958 saw immense efforts of the Chinese government in pushing forward the development of the metallurgical industry. To answer the need of more engineers and technicians in the field of iron and steel, the then Ministry of Metallurgical Industry decided to set up Wuhan Iron and Steel Institute on the basis of Wuchang Advanced Industrial School and by relying on the resources of Wuhan Iron and Steel Company. This is a list of the names of university leaders throughout those years. The picture here shows Chairman Mao Zedong, accompanied by Li Yiqing, the first President of our University and the General Manager of Wuhan Iron and Steel Company on an inspection tour of Wuhan Iron and Steel Company in 1958. The other two pictures show Prof. Tao Hanying, a teacher of our University, did interpretation for Mao Zedong, Chairman of the Central Committee of the CPC, and Zhu De, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, in their meetings with the Soviet experts. The newly-established Wuhan Iron and Steel Institute inherited the glorious tradition of Hubei Technical School and Wuchang Advanced Industrial School, and surpassed the two in both teaching and research. It stressed the importance of cooperating with enterprises, and these pictures show teachers helping enterprises solve technical problems. In 1986, a number of graduates of Wuhan Iron and Steel Institute rode bikes to take office in Xinjiang Iron and Steel Company. The whole journey took almost 40 days and covered 4000miles.Now we have entered the Time Corridor of this museum, where we shall witness the transition of our university to themodern period. Panels here show the other two origins of our unisersity. That is Wuhan Junior College of Construction which was founded in 1954, and Wuhan Junior Medical College of Metallurgical Industry which was founded in 1960.In 1995, Wuhan Iron and Steel Institute, Wuhan Junior College of Construction, and Wuhan Junior Medical College of Metallurgical Industry merged into Wuhan University of Metallurgical Science and Technology. In 1999, the University was renamed again, this time into Wuhan University of Science and Technology, which marked a new page in the university’s history. The fourth section is dedicated to the modern period, and here you will see some of the remarkable achievements of our university. These pictures were taken when senior leaders of the Central Government or the CPC visited our university. We should say that the achievements we have made in the past years should be largely attributed to the support we have received from various levels of government.Disciplinary construction has been the focus of our university work, and consequently this is the field which we have made most remarkable accomplishments in. At present, we have:6 post-doctoral research stations;20 doctoral degree programs;96 master’s degree programs15 colleges which offer 73 bachelor’s degree programs;WUST claims a key discipline under incubation accredited by the central government, and 27 accredited by Hubei Province. It is also the home of1 national key laboratory under incubation,2 key laboratories accredited by the Ministry of Education, and 8 accredited by Hubei Province,3 humanities and social sciences research bases accredited by Hubei Province1 engineering technology center accredited by the Ministry of Education. In the 2013 Ranking of Academic Programs in Colleges and Universities of China issued by the Ministry of Education, our university’s Metallurgical Engineering and Mining Engineering rank among the top 10; 8 programs in our university rank among the top 50, This should be a convincing indicator of the academic strength of our university.Academic strength comes only from excellent staff. In this respect, we have a lot to take pride in: 8 adjunct academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 60 distinguished visiting professors honored as “Chutian Scholars”;.30 teachers of our university have won the title of “New-century Academic Leader”; 5 are recognized as “National Model Teacher” and 1 “National Outstanding Teacher---that is our president KongJianyi”; and 63 got special allowance awarded by the State Council or Hubei Provincial Government.Excellent teaching stuff created plenteous achievements in scientific research, this showcase shows that since 2007,our university has gained National Grade Prize of Science and Technology Progress for 16 times, among them, there are one first prize, twelve second prizes, and three National Award for Technology Invention. They have great significance to our university, which is the A-list award in China. These photos were taken when the professors receiving the awards in the Great Hall of the people. Its experiences in the past years can be said to be a epitome of China's modern higher education's development. Now please follow me along the steps of history to explore the developing process of Henan University.III. Initial Henan UniversityFounded in 1912, Henan University was originally known as t he Preparatory School for Further Study in Europe and Americ a. At that time, Tsinghua College (namely the former Tsinghua University ), Nanyang Public School in Shanghai (namely the former Shanghai Jiao Tong University) and the Preparatory School for Further Study in Europe and Americ a were the only three schools that could directly send students to Europe and America with the support of government, which outstands the past glory of Henan University. These are several presidents at the initial stage. Among them, Mr. Lin Boxiang was the first president of Henan University. He was courteous to the wise and condescending to the scholarly, and treated his students as his own children. During the four years when he was in office, not only the university developed very well, but also the "diligent, precise and simple" ethos was established. The Preparatory School was built on Henan Gongyuan (Henan Examination Center), and this is the building of Gongyuan for teachers and students to live. Gongyuan monument still remains to be the witness to the site of Gongyuan on the campus. As to this building, it is known as Building 6, the teaching building at the time. It is the first teaching building of Henan University. President Li Jingzhai designed and built it. Now it has become a key cultural heritage site under state protection. This is Zhaifang, the students' dormitory of the period. Now, it is also the key cultural heritage site under state protection.Since its opening, the Preparatory School had been well known for its openness and advanced concepts in education, which was mainly reflected in three aspects: first, the Preparatory School opened English, French and Germany courses, and foreign teachers accounted for more than one-third of the faculty. These are the photographs of several of them; secondly, all the courses, except a small number of them such as Chinese history and Chinese language, were taught in foreign language; thirdly, the Preparatory School set a coeducational precedent. This is girls' dormitory at the time. The cultural activities on campus in Henan University have always been rich and colourful. That's resulted from the historical tradition. Please look at these pictures. As early as the time of the Preparatory School, teachers and students have organized the basketball team, tennis team, drama club, and Kongfu team.In January, 1924, Kuomingtang and the Communist Party of China made their first cooperation. The worker-peasant movements surged across the country. Pushed by the revolutionary wave, some progressive students set up a stall to secretly sell and hand out the progressive books and magazines in Henan University which was named Zhongzhou University then. In the following year, the Communist Party branch in Zhongzhou University was established. In July,1925, Li Dazhao, the leader of the Northern District Committee of CPC was invited to the provincial capital Kaifeng and made a report about the history of British aggression in front of Building 6, inspiring students of central plains to join the army of revolution. Since then, a glorious page in the history of Henan University's revolutionary movement was opened. This is Mr. Wang Gongbi, a progressive professor, rural educator and patriotic democrat. In the early 1927, Mr. Wang Gongbi was appointed editor-in-chief of Henan Minpao and later resigned from this governmental work to be an educator. He participated in the establishment of Henan Zhongshan University, becoming one of the founders of the Agricultural Institute of Henan University. The celebrated scholar Mr. Feng Youlan once was the director of School of Arts during 1923 to 1925, and he was also the head and professor of the Department of Philosophy. Influenced by May Fourth Movement, Feng Youlan and his several friends co-founded Xinsheng to vigorously promote the New Culture Movement. This picture shows the first issue of Xinsheng, which was considered as the New Youth of Henan Province.IV. The period of Henan Provincial UniversityFrom 1930 to 1949, along with the suffering of the whole nation, the location of Henan University changed several times. Despite this, our universty still struggled very hard to survive and develop in adversity. In March 1942, Henan University was eventually upgraded to Henan National University. In 1944, according to the comprehensive assessment made by the Ministry of Education in National Government, Henan University ranked sixth among the national universities, creatingan unprecedented glory. More importantly, the spirit of Henan University was established in this phase. This map shows us the routes of the university's migration during the anti-Japanese war. These pictures are some sites of Henan University during the migration. Among them, the second one is the location of the main campus when Henan University moved to a town called Tantou. There happened a touching story. After Henan University moved to Tantou, teachers of Henan University gave full play to their own advantages and developed education in that mountainous area. It received the deeply warm welcome from the local people. When Japanese occupied Tantou, the local people spontaneously organized themselves to help the teachers and students of Henan University to transfer to safety zones. One of the local people sacrificed his life to save them, therefore a solid friendship has been established between the university and the people in Tantou since then. Even today, this story is still being remembered and extoled by all the students and teachers of Henan University. In March 1942, in order to celebrate Henan University’s becoming the national university, teachers and students specially planted two trees to commemorate. These two trees are sill growing in the courtyard of Tantou High School, and they are called "Henan University Cypress".On 15, August,1945, the Japanese imperialists announced their unconditional surrender. He was a fellow of the Royal Academy and the director of the Sino-British Science Co-operation Office. In 1945, Dr. Joseph visited Henan National University and delivered an academic speech named “Science and Democracy”. The book Daozang in our library confirmed Dr. Joseph's idea of writing Science and Civilization in China. He exchanged views on Chinese culture with professor Li Xiangjie and eventually published the great work Science and Civilization in China which caused a stir in the scientific world. This is the silhouette of that work. During this period, the Civil War still continued thus making people suffer great hardship. Therefore teachers and students of Henan University set off a series of anti-Japanese movements. Among them the "roaring singing team" was the most famous one. Its captain Ma Ke who used to study here was a well-known musician. His music compositions such as the White-Haired Girl and Nanniwan have been handed down and become classics.V. AdjustmentFrom 1948 to 1984, Henan University was renamed several times and had a rough and bumpy road. As one of the matrixes of higher education in the six provinces of Central South China, Henan University made an indelible contribution to the educational cause of People'sRepublic of China. On the basis of the original faculties, a number of new institutions and departments were opened. These pictures were taken when the state and party leaders visited our university. They are Mao Zedong, Zhu De, Zhou Enlai, Chen Yi and so on. From this we can see their care and consideration for this university. These pictures show us the growing process of Henan University. In the early 1950s, the Ministry of Education of Government Administration Council proposed the policy that "develop specialized institutes, strengthen and reorganize the university to become a comprehensive one" to adjust the faculties. In the circumstances, Henan University experienced two important adjustments of faculties: the first adjustment was in 1952 when a new batch of schools and departments came into existence on the basis of the original faculties; the second adjustment was in 1953. Pingyuan Teachers College and Henan University merged into Henan Normal College and it was run both in Xinxiang and Kaifeng. The c ollege in Xinxiang later became the present Henan Normal University. As a result of this history, Henan University was vividly called "the univerisity that can produce a university".This is our school song. Our school song was composed in 1940. Its lyricist was Ji Wenfu, and the composer was Chen Zibei. During the anti-Japanese war, Henan University passed through many places. At the most difficult moment, the university decided to create a school song to unite the thinking of teachers and students, inspire the fighting spirit, promote the academic tradition and adhere to the running of the university. Therefore, Ji Wenfu and Chen Zibei were invited to create the school song of Henan University. Over the years the magnificent melody of our school song has been engraved in the hearts of many students, encouraging them to work hard for the prosperity of the country. These pictures demonstrate the teaching and scientific research achieveme nts of our university during this special period. What is worth mentioning are the achieveme nts in composing the specialized books, including Mr. Liu Bing shan's A short history of British literature, Wu Zu mou's Basic Theory of Law, Zhu Shaohou's Chinese Ancient H istory, which are listed by the Ministry of Education as the teaching books in university and were sold more than 1,000,000 copies.VI. 英文讲解稿The Introduction of History Museum and Ceramic Arts Gallery
The Introduction to the History Museum and Ceramic Arts GalleryWelcome to History Museum and Ceramic Arts Gallery of Shaanxi Normal University. The History Museum and Ceramic Arts Gallery consists of three different displays: History and Culture, Ceramic Arts and Painting & Calligraphy. The history and ceramic arts display, which began as the cultural relics display of the History Department in the 1950s, includes over 1000 relics. It is now managed by related teachers with warm-hearted community support. The collection includes bricks, tiles, Shang & Zhou oracle bones, Qin & Han tiles and ceramic arts of the Ming & Qing Dynasties. Now let‟s enter the display hall to appreciate the relics. The first section focuses on the history of the Prehistoric Age. Here is the model of Beijing Pithecanthrope (Peking Ape-man), the recuperated fossil of a Peking Ape-man skull. The average brain capability of Peking Ape-man was 1043 ml, only 300 less than modern people. PekingApe-man lived 500,000 years ago, and belonged to a new stage of human evolution.Neolithic Culture is different from Paleolithic Culture in three major respects: the use of polished stone implements, the invention of pottery utensils, and the emergence of settled habitation and primitive farming.Let‟s look at one of the most representative and unique pottery types: Red Pottery with Pointed-bottom, which ancient people used as a water vessel. First, they used strings to tie on the ears and then put the vessel directly on the surface of the river. As soon as the bottle touched the water, it would naturally fall down and let the water flow in. Then it would stand upright after being filled with water due to the shifting of its center of gravity. Because people at that time lived along the riverside, they made the bottle into such shape. When they brought it home they could push it into the sand, made it more stable. The artifact belongs to Yangshao Culture. The Yangshao Culture is also known as the culture of painted pottery. The patterns on painted pottery are mainly animals and geometric patterns like waves. Here are some broken fragments of the painted pottery. Now we can see some utensils of the Stone Age, such as bone needles, stone cutters, stone axes. They were all daily life utensils of ancient people. From the twenty-first century B.C, our nation entered a slave society. Bronze casting technology was invented and widely used in this period. At the period, there is nothing more important than sacrifice for god and war. Some believe that jade rings were sacrifice utensils for wizards, others believe that it was food for gods. Now, we can see some different weapons of that period including bronze sword, dagger axe, and arrowhead. They were widely used in ancient wars and in the Qin and Han dynasties. We call Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasty the Bronze Age in Chinese history. There are many kinds of bronze relics in our display. Firstly, let‟s look at a set of wine vessels. Because of the wine culture of the Shang Dynasty, there are many bronze wine vessels in that period. Now your can see two different wine vessels, we call them jue and gu in Chinese.Jue is just like the drinking cup we use nowadays. From the shape, we can see extended mouth at the front, two pillars at the edge, and three legs to keep balance. The two pillars had three different functions; firstly theywere used to put aside the moustaches of ancient people and make drinking healthier. Secondly, the drinking vessel is not transparent, so it is hard for the host to judge when he should add more wine for his guests, so when the two pillars get to the face, it is the right time to do so. Also, some believe it is to hang up meat on it when they drink. The following set of bronze relics are cooking utensils of the Zhou Dynasty called “Ding” or “Gui”, which were symbols of the power and rank of different level officials. Different ranks officials used different numbers of “Ding”and “Gui”. For example, the emperors used nine “Ding” and eight “Gui”.And next, let me introduce the first most precious relics of our museum. That is the tile recording a clan being enfeoffed by Qin in the Warring States Period. 121 inscription characters on this tile tell us that officialsenfeoffed a large area to a military officer on a hereditary basis. It was discovered in the 1980s. It is of great value for two reasons: it is the only material object for studying enfeoffment system of Warring States and the enfeoffed relative‟s city mentioned in the tile is the location of our new SNU campus. That is the historical witness of our university. Now let‟s look at the big and clumsy stone: it is the second most precious relics of our museum, the Epitaph of Yan Zhuang from the Tang Dynasty. You can see the edge of epitaph is decorated by gorgeous honeysuckle. The content of the epitaph was written by Li Yan, famous monument writer of Tang Dynasty. The calligraphy was written by Gao Zhengcheng, high-rank secretary of emperor in that period. The quality of calligraphy is high. The subject of the epitaph was Yan Zhuang, the nephew of Ya Liben, the Premier of that period, the second son of Yan Lide, Vice Premier, and the chamberlain of Li Hong, the eldest son of Wu Zetian (Empress of Tang Dynasty). The content of epitaph depicts Yan Zhuang who some unpleasant words when he mourned Li Hong. He hinted that the death of Li Hong had close connection with his mother, Empress WuZetian. This annoyed Wu Zetian greatly, and ordered Yan Zhuang himself to commit suicide. And his name cannot be found in Yan‟s family tree. The descendants believed Li Hong was killed by his mother. Now let‟s see some relics of the Ming & Qing Dynasties. Here is an ivory tabula. It can be seen in series of costume dramas nowadays; it was used by the officials when they have an audience with emperor. The function is just like notepads today. Different rank officials used tabula of different materials. The tabula of the emperor was made of jade; the dukes‟ were made of ivory, and high rank officials‟ were made of bamboo with barbells(any of several slender tactile spines or bristles that hang from the jaws of certain fishes, such as the catfish and carp). Some people believe that the other function of the tabula was to cover official s‟ faces to show their humility to the emperor, because the emperor‟s face should not be seen directly and straightly. The tabula was abandoned in the Qing Dynasty. Here is The No.9 ivory contractAs we all know, contracts are written or oral agreements entered into voluntarily by two or more parties with the intention of creating a legal obligation. However, the contract you see now was used as passport. You can see the enlarged picture ivory contract on the wall; there is a half Chinese character “Tong同” at the left bottom of the contract. If someone wanted to pass the city gate, he had to combine it with the other half of contract holder, making the complete “tong 同” character. Here are some bronze mirrors from the Han to Tang Dynasty period. These are the backs of the mirrors. The design got more delicate with more details over time. Look at this bronze mirror; you can see there are 3 different symbols, just like the English Letter “TLV”. The pattern of mirror is decorated by four different holy animals in Chinese culture, dragon, tiger, phoenix, and tortoise. And its edge was decorated withclouds and grass. The Tang Dynasty marked another period of rapid development for Chinese bronze mirrors. This one is a mirror of Tang Dynasty. You can see it was decorated by grapes and sea animals. This kind of mirrors was the last development peak of bronze mirrors. Due to the high lead content, it is very bright, even though thousands of years have passed, people still can see their faces very clearly. Now we come to the ceramic arts display. The ceramic arts display collects eaves tiles of the Qin & Han periods, large hollow bricks with phoenix design of the Qin Dynasty, Tri-colored glazed pottery of the Tang Dynasty, official porcelain wares of Ming and Qing, etc.China‟s feudal society was the height of its power and splendor in the Sui and Tang dynasties, which was also a golden era in the history of Shaanxi. So next we will see some handicrafts of the Tang Dynasty. Here is the Tang Tri-colored glazed pottery, which brought Chinese pottery craft intoa new stage. What see here is two different potteries of Tang Dynasty. Tri-colored mainly refers to yellow, green and brown, normally called “Tang tri-colored glazed”. The tri-colored glazes may look simple, but during the firing the colors would bleed, leading to irregular artistic patterns that look very beautiful. The tri-colored glazed pottery in our display are a camel and an official figure. From them we can see the tri-colored glazed pottery combined the features of Chinese painting, carving, and scripture together naturally. Here is some porcelain from Song and Yuan Dynasties, another period of rapid progress in the history of Chinese porcelain. Apart from the government-run porcelain kilns, private kilns began to emerge, and there were six famous porcelain kilns. The Yaozhou kiln, north of Xi‟an in Shaanxi, is reprehensive of celadon vessels in the Northern part of China. Here we see a first class artifact. This bowl belongs to white porcelain, a representative production of Ding Kiln—the official kiln in Hebei. The bronze reed at the edge of bowl was made using a very special technique. The custom of “Tea Fighting” arose in northern Fujing in the early Song Dynasty. "Tea Fighting” is not just deciding awinner but also appraising the quality of tea. Actually, it is a process of pursuing a kind of spiritual joy and the art of tea. The quality of tea sets was continuously improved. The three different tea sets belong to that period.Contemporaneous with the Song dynasty was the Liao Dynasty, whose porcelains are less aesthetic than those of the Song Dynasty. However, it is a great evidence of national integration. This green-glazed flat flask, also known as cockscomb pot, is modeled on the shape of nomads‟ waterbladder (for holding drinking water). It is a perfect combination of minorities‟ bladder s and Han porcelain. The Ming and Qing Dynasty was another peak period of porcelain development; the most characteristic of porcelain in that period is the colorful vitreous enamel development. Here is a representative relic of that period----Cup with Fencai design of rooster. Now we see some tile-ends which protect the end of wooden roofs from rain and beautify the architecture. These early tile-ends are somewhat thin and have very simple patterns. Compared with early tiles, Han tiles are larger with wider edges and are grayish in color. Also there was an increase in the number of tile-ends that were inscribed with characters. These characters describe the names of many palaces and include manyluck words, which show that people hoped for an everlasting life.…Qin brick and Han tiles‟ ha ve a worldwide reputation in the architectural history of China. Now let‟s see the third most precious relics of our museum, the hollow bricks with phoenix designs of the Qin Dynasty. These big hollow bricks from the ruins of the Qin palace of Xianyang were usually one meter long and thirty to forty centimeters wide. You can see phoenixes of different design techniques. Because it is very difficult to manufacture such huge hollow bricks even with modern technology, it has very high cultural and academic value. The Museum of Painting and Calligraphy is reconstructed on the basis of the storeroom of calligraphies and paintings in our university library. It has more than 500 paintings, calligraphies and decrees from the Song to the Qing periods. Besides them, our museum still has collected many excellent works by contemporary well-known artists, such as Shutong,Liu Zidou, Wangxijing, etc. They are abundant and also show exquisite craftsmanship. Here is a Landscape painting by Wen Zhengming in the Ming Dynasty. He was honored as one of the top painters of the Ming Dynasty. Here is “Wooden Path painting” by Qiu Ying. He was considered as the one of the “Four Brilliant Painters of the Ming Dynasty”.Here is an edict of the Jiaqing period in the Qing Dynasty. Edicts were the commands or comments of the Emperor in China's feudal society. Edicts were symbols of the power of Chinese emperors. The material of the edict is very elegant, being made of silk with dedicated patterns and clouds. Both ends of the edict have rippling silver dragon as security signs. As the imperial command, the seal of the meritorious officials or the bestowal of knighthood names, the higher the rank of the officials, the more different colors. You can see the edict has five different colors, which indicate the official‟s rank is very high.。
