第I卷第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。

AMany people would love to leave their jobs behind and have a life-changing adventure overseas. They imagine lying under palm trees as the sun goes down. However, life overseas is not always easy, and many are not prepared for the shock of living in an alien culture. The honeymoon periodAt first, for those who actually decide to move abroad, life is an exciting adventure. They enjoy exploring their new surroundings, and life seems like an extended holiday. They don’t mind trying the local cuisine and discovering the local culture. They can even afford to practice their foreign-language skills without fear of making mistakes.Trouble in paradiseIn many cases, when people consider moving to another country, they often fail to realize how different life will be. As time goes by, they become frustrated when language and cultural misunderstandings become a daily headache. In this stage, the visitors begin to withdraw from life in the host country and avoid spending time with local people in favor of mixing with others from their own cultural background. The road to recoveryGradually, most visitors realize they must accept the differences and not fight against them. This change encourages them to improve their language skills and slowly they manage to do the things they could easily do at home, such as opening a bank account. This new-found confidence enables them to see a side of life which very few tourists get to witness.Adjusting to life abroad can often be a real problem. The secret to overcoming it is to stop trying to change your host country: you will not succeed. If not, you risk losing your dream and having to return to the old life you wanted to leave behind.21. Why do people moving abroad feel excited at first?A. They find foreign living much easier.B. They have the necessary language skills.C. They love the adventure and exploration.D. They enjoy meeting people from different cultures.22. According to the author, what is the main problem many people moving abroadface?A. Homesickness.B. Culture shockC. Health problems.D. Lack of employment.23. What would the author suggest people moving abroad do?A. Study the local language.B. Go on holidays frequently.C. Learn how to open a bank account.D. Seek out people from their home country.BAustralia loves interesting money. In 1988, it was the first country to replace paper money with special plastic banknotes. Now it’s introduced a new five-dollar bill so technologically advanced that many experts are calling it the money of the future! At first glance, the new note looks much like the old one. It has the same pink colour and main pictures on the front and back. But look closer, and you will notice a clear window running down the middle, surrounded by images of the yellow Prickly Moses, a type of Australian plant.Tilt(使倾斜)the note a little and you will see the Eastern Spinebill, an Australian bird, beating its wings as if trying to fly away. Turn the bill from side to side, and you will notice the picture of a small building at the bottom of the note spins, and the image of “5” changes position. While these moveable features are impressive and entertaining, that was not the reason Australian government officials spent ten years developing them. Their primary purpose was to make it impossible for criminals to produce their own fake notes. The new five-dollar note also has something to help blind people easily identify the money. It has a raised bump alongside the top and bottom, enabling blind people to quickly determine its value. The credit for persuading the Australian government to add this all-important bump goes to 15-year-old Connor McLeod. The blind Sydney teenager came up with the idea in 2014 after being unable to tell how much money he had received for Christmas. Connor says he was so embarrassed at not being able to see the difference between notes that he only carried coins to pay for food at the school cafeteria. Toconvince the government officials of his idea, Connor started a website that got huge public attention. The government will add this feature to the new $10 bill which comes out in late 2017, as well as the update 420, $50, and $100 bills that are still being designed.24. Which picture does NOT move when the banknote is tilted?A. The bird.B. The number.C. The plants.D. The building.25. What was the main reason the Australian government created the new banknote?A. To make the note more difficult to copy.B. To show the country’s advanced technology.C. To help blind people more easily use money.D. To make the note’s appearance more attractive.26. What can we guess about Australian coins?A. They are different in size or shape.B. They are required in school cafeterias.C. They are more frequently used than notes.D. They are more convenient for young people.27. What did Connor do to persuade the government?A. He wrote a letter to the leaders.B. He organized an online meeting.C. He sought support on the Internet.D. He requested a special Christmas gift.CAt this year’s Technology Forum, speakers include world-famous people, such as Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Computer, and lesser-known individuals with great ideas to change the world. One of the latter is Jonny Cohen, a high school senior, green businessman and creator of GreeenShields.Since Cohen was a child, he has been innovating and inventing. When he was 12 and took science classes at Northwestern University, he saw a school bus and had an idea: what if the shape of school bus was improved to make it more fuel efficient? This would greatly reduce the amount of pollution it produced. He set about making a wind tunnel in his parents’garage and placed small metal plates or shields on toy school buses to test them. The result: his shields redirected the airflow over and around the bus, decreased wind drag, and produced better fuel economy and less pollution.Cohen went through various experiments to improve his GreenShields invention with the help of MIT and Cook-Illionis Bus Company, which donated a full-sized bus for Cohen’s experiments, he now has a shield model that is inexpensive and easy to attach, enabling widespread adoption. How much of an impact can these shields have on climate change? Fuel consumption for the average US school bus is seven miles per gallon. GreenShields increases fuel efficiency by 10-20%, saving about $600 per bus per year, and costs only $30 to attach. Cohen and his partners are now trying to persuade the government to put GreenShields on all school buses. With almost half-a-million school buses in America using nearly $ 2.5 billion of fuel per year, a consumption reduction of 10-20% would make a big difference in pollution. Not to mention the roughly $ 285 million in annual savings on fuel.28. What can we learn about Jonny Cohen from the text?A. He has produced GreenShields independently.B. He has been employed to improve school buses.C. He is a world-famous businessman and inventor.D. He has a talent for finding and solving problems.29. How does GreenShields make a bus more fuel efficient?A. By reducing the amount of wind drag.B. By improving the quality of fuel used.C. By providing a wind tunnel for the bus.D. By changing the shape of the bus engine.30. Where did Cohen begin testing his shields?A. At Northwestern University.B. In his parents’ garage.C. At a local bus company.D. In an MIT lab.31. What’s the intended benefit of Cohen’s invention?A. To provide school buses with cheaper fuel.B. To reduce the cost of producing school buses.C. To increase the profits of the school bus industry.D. To make school buses more environmentally-friendly.DWe all know the feeling: looking at the computer screen, pretending to be interested in our homework, even though we really feel bored. But such feelings may soon be at an end, says Dr Harry Witchel, head of the Essex Medical School. He believes that computers of the future will notice when people feel bored and even take action to stop it.Before you get concerned, the machine won’t be reading your mind. It will be observing the many movements you make while using a computer. It’s not interested inthe big movements needed to use the machine-----like moving a mouse or touching a screen-----but small, barely noticeable movements like closing your eyes , moving in your seat or rubbing your face. Witchel calls these “boredom movements”and says they show how interested the person is in what they are reading or watching. The higher the interest level, the less movement! To test his theory, Witchel invited 27 people to perform various computer-based task. The activities ranged from playing online games (an interesting task) to reading documents like government laws that most people would find boring.A special video camera followed the participants’ movements as they completed each task. Just as the researcher expected, the “boredom movements” greatly decreased, by as much as 42%, when the subjects were very interested in what they were reading or seeing.Fortunately, Dr Witchel isn’t planning to use his results to create machines that report students who are not paying attention at school. Instead, he wants “movement sensing”technology to be built into future computers in order to improve students’computer-based learning experience. The scientist says that by measuring the students’interest level as they work, educators will be able to adjust their materials in real-time to keep students focused. Witchel also believes that the technology can provide filmmakers with honest audience opinions and in the future, help to develop more intelligent robots.32. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?A. Homework.B. A computer.C. Boredom.D. The future.33. Why did Dr Witchel carry out his research?A. To discover how bored people move.B. To find out what makes people bored.C. To see if interested people are more active.D. To test the link between boredom and movement.34. Which movement would Witchel’s technology most likely pay attention to?A. Turning off the machine.B. Typing words on a keyboard.C. Surfing quickly between webpages.D. Moving one’s head from side to side.35. How will the new technology help education, according to Witchel?A. By reducing teachers’ workload.B. By maintaining students’ learning interest.C. By reporting students’ misbehavior in class.D. By making learning more like a computer game.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,葱段问候的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Adventure travellersBThe United States of America was founded in 1776 after the 13 independent American states rose up against the ruling British, defeated them in the American Revolutionary War, and signed the Declaration of Independence, the document which declared the creation of the new country. The men who led the revolution, drafted the Declaration of Independence, and wrote the first American laws are known as "founding fathers". Benjamin Franklin, whose picture is on the US100-dollar note, was appointed to prepare the Declaration that was eventually signed by the other founding fathers.Franklin was born in 1706 in Boston to a soap maker named Josiah Franklin. His father could not afford full schooling for all his children, but Benjamin loved books and worked in his elder brother's printing business before starting a newspaper called the Pennsylvania Gazette in 1729. He wrote and drew cartoons for the newspaper. In addition, he worked to improve living conditions in the city: introducing street lights, cleaning the roads and building libraries. In the 1740s, Franklin retired from his newspaper and turned to science with great success. He was a very smart man and his work on electricity, including the "kite experiment" which confirmed the nature of lightning, made him famous throughout the world.Franklin earned the title of the “First American" for his efforts to unite the 13 American states, and to win their independence. This part of the story starts in London. He was sent to the city to persuade the British to treat the American states more fairly. It was here that he began interacting with important political thinkers and activists of the time and developing his own political ideas.Following his return to America in 1761 he became much more active in American politics and in the battle against British rule. After the United States of America was established, Franklin held several important positions such as the first United States Postmaster General, Ambassador to France and President of Pennsylvania. He is also famous today for his wise sayings, including "a penny saved is a penny earned” and “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".24. What is the article mainly about?A. The American Declaration of Independence.B. Franklin's contributions to American society.C. The American War of Independence.D. Benjamin Franklin's early life.25. How did Franklin begin developing his own political thinking?A. By discussing ideas with political activists in Britain.B. By persuading the 13 American states to unite.C. By fighting against British rule in America.D. By writing articles for his own newspaper.26. What can be inferred about Franklin from the article?A. His most important contribution was in science.B. He was the leader of the “founding fathers”.C. He was successful in many different areas.D. He came from a very wealthy family.27. What is the correct order for the following events from Franklin's life?a. He started a newspaper business.b. He carried out the kite experience on electricity.c. He worked for his brother in a printing company.d. He was appointed the Ambassador to France.e. He helped write the Declaration of Independence.f. He visited England to discuss independence.A. e, c, a, b, f, dB. c, a, b, f, e, dC. a, c, f, b, d, eD. f, d, a, b, c, eWhether or not you believe Professor Stephen Hawking's alarming theory that building a “strong” artificial intelligence (AI) could lead to the end of the human race, it’s clear that AI is reaching the point where soon it will affect almost every aspect of how we work with computers. We must get used to computers that talk back.Last year, investment bank Deep Ventures attracted much media attention when it announced that it had appointed an AI computer to its board of directors to help make important business decisions. What actually happened was that the company used a program called VITAL to analyse potential investments (授资) in different businesses. But VITAL doesn't attend board meetings or vote - it's just a program. While it's not quite the evil robot we see in science fiction movies, it shows us how far computers and AI have advanced.Soon AI systems will be driving our vehicles, interpreting our facial expressions as we perform complex tasks, translating our voices into different languages and building other machines for us in factories around the world. But they won't look like us or pretend to be human. In the new film Ex Machina, a computer scientist is asked to assess whether a beautiful human-looking robot called Ava has human intelligence. I won't spoil the film for you, but it occurred to me that one of the reasons we believe other human beings are conscious and have intelligence is that we're told they are all .the time. Indeed, if you stopped believing other people have minds, you would quickly find yourself unable to function in the world.Google's Eric Schmidt argues that we shouldn't worry about AI, and that we need instead to redesign our education systems so that we learn how to get on with the machines. As powerful computer-based intelligences continue developing, we must let go of the belief that only humans have intelligence and consciousness. Just as we have accepted the reality that the self-awareness that makes minds possible exists within the animal world, we may soon accept that it can also exist within the machine world.28. According to Professor Stephen Hawking, human beings .A. may be endangered by strong AIB. are still more intelligent than machinesC. will benefit greatly from the advances in AID. will never be able to build a strong AI system29. According to Paragraph 2, VITAL can .A. attend board meetings to voteB. make final decisions for the bankC. attract more investments to the bankD. assess the value of different businesses30. The author predicts that AI machines will soon be able to .A. control people's facial expressionsB. construct other intelligent machinesC. have a human-like physical appearanceD. change people's speeches into different languages31. Which of the following would the author most probably agree with?A. It is too late to stop the danger of artificial intelligence. . .B. Humans should learn to live with intelligent machines.C. Intelligent machines will eventually control the world.D. Only humans can have intelligence and consciousness.Mature-age university students are annoying, I know. I understand that when you're 18 or 19, and already know everything, there's no need to do the readings or show up prepared for class. I also understand that there are these old people in class who should be doing other things——maybe retiring, or gardening in the backyard. They are eagerly asking questions (or worse, answering them) and generally loud.I understand because I used to be one of them. I dropped out of high school in Year 11 and after playing guitar in a band for a few years, I spent the next ten years working different jobs. Then a friend, who thought I was wasting my life, suggested I enroll at his university. Although afraid, I eventually took a university preparation course and a year later became a 35-year-old university freshman.Like many mature-age students, after completing my degree, I continued studying and eventually attained my PhD.Now I'm a lecturer at Toronto University in Canada. In fact, I have just finished preparing a group of mature-age students to annoy next year's young first years. My students come from many different backgrounds. But they all share an enthusiasm for knowledge and learning.I know they are ridiculous and show up to class with folders full of readings, minds overflowing with ideas and concepts they want to discuss. I was the same. But, contrary to the stereotype of the annoying mature-age students occupying the airtime in class, most don't want to control the discussion. They're likely to be waiting, counting away the seconds silently in the hope that someone will want to talk about all of these amazing ideas we're learning about. Only after waiting for younger voices to speak. ( but which often remain silent) do they begin talking.Speaking for myself, I love students who come prepared and ready to discuss stuff. So let's celebrate all of those “annoying” mature-age students.32. According to the article, a mature-age student is a person .A. who behaves like an adultB . studying for a higher degreeC. not yet qualified to enter universityD. who starts university at an older age33. In the first paragraph, the author .A. shows that he is opposed to mature-age studentsB. describes the problems mature-age students createC. makes fun of the attitude held by many young students .D. explains why many teachers dislike mature-age students .34. What does the underlined word "them" in Paragraph 2 refer to?A. Retired people.B. Early high school leavers.C. Mature-age university students.D. University students aged below 20.35. Why do mature-age students often wait before speaking in class?A. They are not very familiar with the topic being discussed.B. They want to give the younger 'students more chances to speak.C. They lack the ability to give their opinions. . .D. They are more interested in hearing others' opinions. .第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AGive it five minutesI used to be a hothead. Whenever anyone said anything, I’d think of a way to disagree. I’d push back hard if something didn’t fit my world-view.It’s like I had to be first with an opinion — as if being first meant something. But what it really meant was that I wasn’t thinking hard enough about the problem. The faster you re act, the less you think. Not always, but often. This came to a head back in 2007. I was speaking at the Business Innovation Factory conference in Providence, RI. So was Richard Saul Wurman. After my talk Richard came up to introduce himself and compliment my talk. That was very generous of him. He certainly didn’t have to do that. And what did I do? I pushed back at him about the talk he gave. While he was making his points on stage, I was taking an inventory of the things I didn’t agree with. And when pres ented with an opportunity to speak with him, I quickly pushed back at some of his ideas. I must have seemed like such an asshole. His response changed my life. It was a simple thing. He said “Man, give it five minutes.” I asked him what he meant by that? H e said, it’s fine to disagree, it’s fine to push back, it’s great to have strong opinions and beliefs, but give my ideas some time to set in before you’re sure you want to argue against them. “Five minutes” represented “think”, not react. He was totally ri ght. I came into the discussion looking to prove something, not learn something. This was a big moment for me.Richard has spent his career thinking about these problems. He’s given it 30 years. And I gaveit just a few minutes. Now, certainly he can be wr ong and I could be right, but it’s better to think deeply about something first before being so certain you’re right. There’s also a difference between asking questions and pushing back. Pushing back means you already think you know. Asking questions means you want to know. Ask more questions.Learning to think first rather than react quick is a life-long pursuit. It’s tough. I still get hot sometimes when I shouldn’t. But I’m really enjoying all the benefits of getting better. If you aren’t sure why this i s important, think about this quote from Jonathan Ive regarding Steve Jobs’ reverence(respect) for ideas:And just as Steve loved ideas, and loved making stuff, he treated the process of creativity with a rare and a wonderful reverence. You see, I think he better than anyone understood that while ideas ultimately can be so powerful, they begin as fragile, barely formed thoughts, so easily missed, so easily compromised, so easily just squished. That’s deep. Ideas are fragile. They often start powerless. They’re barely there, so easy to ignore or skip or miss. There are two things in this world that take no skill: 1. Spending other people’s money and 2. Dismissing an idea.Dismissing an idea is so easy because it doesn’t involve any work. You can scoff at it. You can ignore it. You can puff some smoke at it. That’s easy. The hard thing to do is protect it, think about it, let it marinate, explore it, riff on it, and try it. The right idea could start out life as the wrong idea.So next time you hear something, or someone, talk about an idea, pitch an idea, or suggest an idea, give it five minutes. Think about it a little bit before pushing back, before saying it’s too hard or it’s too much work. Those things may be true, but there may be another truth in there too: It may be worth it.1. Which of the following best describes the word hothead from the first paragraph?A. SupportiveB. FastC. NervousD. Aggressive2. What did the author do while Richard was talking in the business conference?A. He kept notes for things that he did not agree with.B. He pushed Richard and beat him.C. He was preparing for his own speech.D. He was getting ready to compliment him.3. Which of the following is the reason for quoting Jonathan Ive?A. The author thinks Steve Jobs is the best when it comes to creativity.B. The author is inspired by Steve Job's attitude towards new ideas.C. The author respects Steve Job because he is creative and he likes ideas.D. The author thinks Steve Job has ideas that are strong and powerful and are hard to miss.4. The right idea always starts from a wrong idea and you need to protect it from beingdismissed.C. One should be careful when it comes to judge a new idea.D. Every idea, whether powerful or fragile, deserves five minutesBBats are impressive creatures. They are known to carry dangerous diseases like SARS without getting sick.So researchers wanted to know: How do bats fight off so many deadly diseases? Learning their secret could help doctors better treat humans who have these diseases, therefore saving millions of lives. To solve this problem, a team of researchers from Australia and China analyzed bat DNA. The scientists studied two kinds of bats—the Australian megabat, known as the flying fox, and the Chinese microbat. The scientists then arranged the bat genome (基因组) in order by comparing their DNA.The researchers now think that the special immunity (免疫性) to illness that bats have may be connected to their ability to fly.Bats are the only mammals (哺乳动物) that can truly fly. Flying uses up a lot of energy. The energy burned for flying produces something in the animal called free radicals (自由基). Free radicals can damage DNA and lead to diseases such as cancer. However, bats are not affected by free radicals produced during flight. The reason is that bats carry special genes to repair any damaged DNA.Scientists th ink that because bats fly and produce free radicals, they’ve evolved to carry genes that shaped their special immune system.“We’re thinking that the evolution of flight led to a sort of effect, influencing not only the immune system but also things like a ging and cancer,” says Chris Cowled, of the Australian Animal Health Laboratory. “We think we’ve really found something special.”Researchers believe that this discovery might one day be key to helping humans fight diseases such as cancer that attack the immune system and damage DNA.5. What’s true about bats according to the passage?A. They carry many deadly diseases like SARS so it’s easy for them to get sick.B. Bats are the only animals that can tell directions easily.C. Bats are among the mammals that can truly fly.D. Researchers studied bats to help save people.6. According to researchers, bats can fight off many deadly diseases mainly because ________.A. they have developed special immune system through evolutionB. they are able to fly, which burns a lot of energyC. free radicals in their bodies can damage DNA and cause diseasesD. they carry no special genes to repair damaged DNA7. The passage is mainly about ________.A. bats and dangerous diseasesB. bats and their special immune systemC. free radicals and immune systemD. ways to cure cancerCThroughout history there have always been people who can make other people laugh. Early clowns (小丑) often both annoyed and delighted audiences with their comments and songs. They were not the si lent performers seen in today’s circus rings (马戏场). Clowns lost their voices when the large three-ring circuses made it impossible for the audience to hear them.Circus clowns give performances in various ways. Walk-around clowns use an animal or something as part of their performance. A carpet clown moves around, talking with the audience and performing while the acts change in the rings. Then there are acrobatic clowns, riding clowns, juggling clowns and others.Everything a clown does looks easy, but it’s not. Making people laugh can be hard work. Clowns must be in good physical condition to prevent injuries. Each funny move is carefully timed and well-practiced. Most clowns have also been trained as acrobats, jugglers or aerial artists, and many include such skills into their acts.Generally, there are three categories of circus clowns—whiteface, auguste and character. Each has a special makeup style and costume. Each has a typical act as well. The neat whiteface is usually a strict, in-charge character who sets up the punch line (the point of a joke) for the joke with a partner who is typically an auguste. His facial features are neatly detailed in red or black, and his costumes look so loose with a ruffle around the neck.Auguste clown got his name from a German nickname for someone who is clumsy. The auguste wears light-colored makeup, but white is used around the mouth and eyes, and there’s a big red nose. This clown performs a great deal of humor. An oversized suit or baggy trousers allow free movement for all the clumsy acts. He also wears big shoes.Character clowns perform as different personalities—cowboys, grandmothers or concert conductors. The most famous character clown, however, is the tramp. Tramps wear different styles of makeup and torn costumes. Some tramp clowns are happy-go-lucky. Others are extremely sad. Still others act like gentlemen who just happen to be out of money.Clowns have a long and interesting history and use serious techniques. However, the children and adults at the cir cus don’t need to know these facts to get ready for fun when they hear “Bring in the clowns!”8. According to the Paragraph 1, why did clowns lose their voices?A. Because they wanted to avoid annoying audiences.B. Because there were only a few audiences in the ring.C. Because audiences often spoke louder than clowns.D. Because they could not be heard in the three-ring circuses.9. If a clown is dressed in baggy clothing, which type of clown does he belong to?A. The auguste or the whitefaceB. The whiteface or the characterC. The auguste or the characterD. The riding clown or the tramp10. What makes the character clowns different?A. He plays a leading role in performances.B. He wears more attractive make-up.C. He performs in a more funny way.D. He acts in different characters.11. What is the passage mainly about?A. The long history of clowns.B. Varied opinions on clowns.C. Some basic facts about clowns.D. Three different types of clowns.DCan you be too beautiful? It is hardly a problem that most of us have to bother — as much as we might like to dream that it were the case.Yet the blessings and curses of beauty have been a long-standing interest in psychology. Do those blessed with shiny faces and an attractive body live in a cloud of appreciation — or does it sometimes pay to be ordinary?Combing through decades of findings, social psychologists Lisa Slattery Walker and Tonya Frevert at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte have reviewed all the evidence to date and their conclusions are not what you might expect. At the most basic level, beauty might be thought to carry a kind of halo(光环) around it; we see that someone has one good quality, and by association, our deep mind may assume that they have other good ones too.Even in the courts, a pleasing appearance can work its magic. Attractive criminals are likely to get less strict sentences, or to escape punishment entirely; attractive plaintiffs(原告), meanwhile, are more likely to win their case and get bigger financial settlements. “It’s an effect seen everywhere,” says Walker. But if beauty pays in most circumstances, there are still situations where it can have opposite results. While attractive men may be considered better leaders, for instance, hidden sexist prejudices(偏见) can work against attractive women, making them less likely to be hired for high-level jobs that require power. And as you might expect, good-looking people of both sexes run into envy — one study found that if you are interviewed by someone of the same sex, they may be less likely to employ you if they judge that you are more attractive than they are.More worryingly, being beautiful or handsome could harm your medical care. We tend to link good looks to health, meaning that illnesses are often taken less seriously when they affect the good-looking. When treating people for pain, for instance, doctors tend to take less care over the more attractive people. And the bubble of beauty can be a somewhat lonely place. One study in 1975, for instance, found that people tend to move further away from a beautiful woman on the pathway — perhaps as amark of respect, but still making interaction more distant. “Attractiveness can convey more power over visible space —but that in turn can make others feel they can’t approach that person,” says Frevert. Interestingly, the online dating website OKCupid recently reported that people with the most beautiful pictures are less likely to find dates than those with less perfect pictures.Ultimately, Frevert points out that focusing too much on your appearance can itself be harmful if it creates stress and anxiety —even for those already blessed with good looks. “If you are crazy about attractiveness, it may affect your experience and interactions,” she says. It’s an outdated saying, but no amount of beauty can make up for a bad personality. As the writer Dorothy Parker put it so elegantly: “Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone.”12. From paragraph 1, we can learn that _______.A. some may be bothered by their unattractive appearanceB. most people are not afraid of being too beautifulC. we might always dream about being bothered by othersD. being too beautiful can be a problem bothering everyone13. Which is the benefit for beautiful people?A. An attractive plaintiff has more chances to get away with punishment.B. Women with pleasing appearance will always be considered as better leaders.C. Good-looking people are often regarded as having many good qualities.D. Beautiful criminals are more likely to persuade the judge and win the case.14. What can be inferred from OKCupid’s finding?A. People with perfect pictures will find dates sooner or later.B. Less attractive women are lonely because of their appearances.C. We may feel more excited to approach those with attractive appearances.D. Don’t use perfect pictures when trying to find dates online.15. What might be the best title for the passage?A. Negative Sides of BeautyB. Sexist PrejudiceC. Blessed with BeautyD. Beauty vs Ugliness第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Only one city —Beijing —had a population of over a million. Most people lived in rural areas, and never saw a city in their lives. In 1900, just a hundred years later, roughly 150 million people lived in cities, and the world’s ten largest cities all had populations exceeding one million. By 2000, the number of city dwellers exceeded three billion; and in 2008, the world's population crossed a tipping point — more than half of the people on Earth lived in cities. By 2050, that could increase to over two-thirds. Clearly, humans have become an urban species. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, many people viewed cities negatively — crowded, dirty environments full of disease and crime. They feared that as cities got bigger, living conditions would worsen. In recent decades, however, attitudes have changed. Many experts now think urbanization (城市化) is good news, offering solutions to the problems of Earth’s growing population.Harvard economist Edward Glaeser, author of The Victory of the Cir, is one such person. Glaeser argues that cities are very productive because “the absence of space between people” reduces the cost of transporting goods, people, and ideas. While the flow of goods has always been important to cities, what is most important today is the flow of ideas. Successful cities enable people to learn from each other easily, and attract and reward smart people with higher wages.Another urbanization supporter is environmentalist Stewart Brand. Brand believes cities help the environment because they allow haft of the world’s population to live on about four percent of the land. T his leaves more space for open country, such as farmland. City dwellers also have less impact per person on the environment than people in the countryside. Their roads, sewers, and power lines need fewer resources to build and operate. City apartments require less energy to heat, cool, and light. Most importantly, people in cities drive less so they produce fewer greenhouse gases per person. So it’s a mistake to see urbanization as evil; it’s a natural part of development. The challenge is how to manage the growth.4. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?A. The history of modern cities.B. Changes taking place within cities.C. How cities have grown over time.D. Why modern cities are changing.5. How have experts’ attitudes towards cities changed in recent decades?A. They now view the weaknesses as strengths.B. They no longer see city-riving as attractive.C. They accept city life in spite of its problems.D. They think city-riving provides more benefits.6. Which of the following would Edward Glaeser agree with?A. Cities provide more economic opportunities.B. City people get along better with each other.C. Over-crowded cities result in problems.D. Cities limit the flow of ideas.7. According to Paragraph 4, what would be the result of moving people out of cities?A. Economic production would be reduced.B. There would be less farmland available.C. People would travel less frequently.D. House values would fall greatly.CIt was December 25, 1914, only 5 months into World War I. German, British, and French soldiers, already sick and tired of the senseless killing, disobeyed their superiors and started socialising with “the enemy” along two-thirds of the Western Front.German troops held up Christmas trees with signs, “Merry Christmas”. Thousands of troops ran across the battlefields covered with dead bodies. They sang Christmas songs, exchanged photographs of loved ones back home, shared food and even played football. Soldiers hugged men they had been trying to kill a few short hours before. They agreed to warn each other if their officers forced them to fire their weapons, and to aim high.Fear ran through the military leaders on both sides. They felt that their power was being challenged: soldiers declaring their brotherhood with each other and refusing to fight. Generals declared this unexpected peacemaking illegal and said that participating soldiers would face a military court. Those found guilty would be imprisoned or even shot. By March 1915 the socialising movement had been destroyed and the killing machine was back in full operation. Over the next three years more than fifteen million people died in the war.Not many people have heard the story of the Christmas Truce (休战). On Christmas Day, 1988, a local radio host in Bos ton played “Christmas in the Trenches”, a song about the Christmas Truce, several times and was stunned by his listeners’ response. Thousands of people called in, praising the song, with many moved to tears by the amazing events it described. You can probably guess why the callers were in tears. The Christmas Truce story goes against most of what we have been taught about people. It lets us see the world as it can be and says, “This really happened once.” It shows us the potential we have as humans, and contradicts all of those TV and newspaper stories that tell us how mean and heartless people are. It is like hearing that our deepest wishes really are true: the world really can be different.8. The soldiers began socialising with the enemy because ________.A. they couldn't bear the meaningless killingB. it was the best way to avoid being killedC. they feared that they would be caughtD. their enemies were from similar backgrounds9. How did the generals finally put an end to the soldiers’ socialisi ng?A. They sent the soldiers’ loved ones to prison.B. They moved the two groups of soldiers further apart.C. They increased the number of officers to control the soldiers.D. They warned the soldiers that they would face severe punishment.10. The u nderlined word “stunned” in Paragraph 4 most probably means ________.A. satisfiedB. shockedC. amusedD. confused11. The author uses the story of the soldiers to imply that human beings ________.A. are not trustworthy under stressB. are naturally aggressive and war-likeC. are basically caring and kindheartedD. will always do what is in their own self-interestDEarlier this year, the social media website Facebook announced that it would work with several news organisations — including The New York Times, The Guardian, and the BBC — to place news stories directly into users’ personal Facebook webpage.Stories published using Facebook Instant will load more quickly and keep the style of the original publisher, who will keep all the advertising income the stories earn — at least for now. The deal shows how important social, media has become to news organisations, and is a clear sign of how the world of news is changing — and has been for a while. When Google News began in 2002, many saw it as the death of the newspaper. It had no human editor. Instead Google used, and still uses, a secret computer program that selects and displays news stories according to the reader’s personal interests. More recently, Associated Press and Yahoo! have bee n punishing computer-written articles. Both use special software to automatically produce stories about company financial results and sports reports — areas where the quality of writing is felt to be of secondary importance to the accuracy of the data.Should we be worried about such developments? I think we should. One concern is that facebook, Google and other social media websites see journalism as a sideline, a way of putting people in front of advertisements. It isn’t their primary function — so if it stops making them lots of money, they're likely to stop doing it.There’s also a concern that computer-written articles are not actually journalism at all, because what a human news team produces is actually quite complex. A well-written news story puts information in context, offers a voiceto each side of an argument and brings the public new knowledge.Though economics and speed of delivery mean readers will probably choose a computer-written story over a carefully shaped article — at least for daily news — I don't think the computers will be writing any in-depth articles for a while yet.12. What is the main purpose of the article?A. To report on a new computer service offered by Facebook..B. To advise readers against reading computer-written news.C. To express concern about recent trends in online news.D. To describe the process of online news reporting.13. Computer-written news reports have so far focused on sports and finance because ________.A. these are the most popular topics for online readersB. there are fewer journalists specialising in these areasC. information on these topics is more easily availableD. writing style is less important than accuracy in these areas14. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A. Journalism.B. Advertising.C. Facebook.D. Business.15. In Paragraph 4, which of the following is mentioned as a characteristic of a well-written news article?A. The information presented is up-to-date.B. The author's opinion is clear.C. Different views on the topic are presented.D. The language used is vivid.

AMy color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of clothes that wouldn't fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautiful when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn't get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed. Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static(静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉) shaking my set. When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble.21. Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set?A. He got an older model than he had expected.B. He couldn't return it when it was broken.C. He could have bought it at a lower price.D. He failed to find any movie shows on it.22. Which of the following can best replace the phrase "signed off" in paragraph 1?A. ended all their programsB. provided fewer channelsC. changed to commercialsD. showed all-night movies23. How did the author finally get this TV set working again?A. By shaking and hitting itB. By turning it on and offC. By switching channelsD. By having it repaired24. How does the author sound when telling the story?A. CuriousB. AnxiousC. CautiousD. HumorousBYour house may have an effect on your figure. Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan.Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious(难为情) when they're in poorly lit places – and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn't have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us less hungry. So when it's time to repaint, go blue.Don't forget the clock – or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories(卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at 30 minutes. And while you're at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turning on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake(摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we'll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.25. The text is especially helpful for those who care about ____.A. their home comfortsB. their body shapeC. house buyingD. healthy diets26. A home environment in blue can help people ____.A. digest food betterB. reduce food intakeC. burn more caloriesD. regain their appetites27. What are people advised to do at mealtimes?A. Eat quickly.B. Play fast musicC. Use smaller spoonsD. Turn down the lights28. What can be a suitable title for the text?A. Is Your House Making You Fat?B. Ways of Serving DinnerC. Effects of Self-ConsciousnessD. Is Your Home Environment Relaxing?CMore students than ever before are taking a gap year(间隔年) before going to university. It used to be the "year off" between school and university. The gap-year phenomenon originated(起源) with the months left over to Oxbridge applicants between entrance exams in November and the start of the next academic year. This year, 25,310 students who have accepted places in higher education institutions have put off their entry until next year, according to statistics on university entrance provided by the University and College Admissions Service (UCAS).That is a record 14.7% increase in the number of students taking a gap year. Tony Higgins from UCAS said that the statistics are good ne ws for everyone in higher education. “Students who take a well-planned year out are more likely to be satisfied with, and complete, their chosen course. Students who take a gap year are often more mature and responsible,” he said. But not everyone is happy. Owain James, the president of the National Union of Students (NUS), argued that the increase is evidence of student hardship – young people are being forced into earning money before finishing their education. “New students are now aware that they are li kely to leave university up to£15,000 in debt. It is not surprising that more and more students are taking a gap year to earn money to support their study for the degree. NUS statistics show that over 40% of students are forced to work during term time and the figure increases to 90% during vacating periods,” he said.29. 2015年高中三年级教学质量检测英语第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)ARaised in a fatherless home, my father was extremely tightfisted towards us children. His attitude didn’t soften as I grew into adulthood and went to college. I had to ride the bus whenev er I came home. Though the bus stopped about two miles from home. Dad never met me, even in cold weather. If I grumbled, he’d say in his loudest father-voice. “That’s what your legs are for!”The walk didn’t bother me as much as the fear of walking alo ne along the highway and country roads, I also felt less than valued t hat my father didn’t seem concern ed about my safety. That feeling was canceled one spring evening. It had been a particularly difficult week at college after long hours in labs. I longed for home. When the bus reached a stop. I stepped off and dragged my suitcase to begin the long journey home.A row of hedge (篱笆) the driveway that climb the hill to our house. Once I had turned off the highway to start the last lap of my journey, I always had a sense of relief to see the hedge because it meant that I was almost home. On that particular evening, the hedge had just come into view when I saw something gray moving along the top of the hedge, moving towards the house. Upon closer observ ation, I realized it was the top of my father’s head. Then I knew that each time I’d come home, he had stood behind the hedge, watching, until he knew I had arrived safely. I swallowed hard against the tears. He did care, after all.On later visits, that spot of gray became my watchtower. I could hardly wait until I was close enough to watch for its secret movement above the greenery. Upon reaching home, I would find my father sitting innocently in his chair “So! Riding Bus AlongBI have been teaching animal behavior at the Boulder County Prison in Colorado for 10 years. The course is one of the most popular in the prison. Prisoners have to earn the right to attend the course and they work hard to get in.One reason why the course is so popular is that many prisoners find it easier to connect with animals than with people, because animals don’t judge them. They trust animals in ways they don’t with humans.Yet, they hold a misunderstanding of how animals treat one another. Many admit that their own “animal behavior” is what got them into trouble in the first place. I teach that though there is competition and aggression in the animal kingdom, there is also a lot of cooperation, and sympathy. Many of the students want to build healthy relationships, and they find that the class helps them. I use examples of the social behavior of group-living animals such as wolves as a model for developing and maintaining(维持) friendships among people who must work together for their own good and also for the good of the group. It’s clear that science inspires the students here and it also gives them hope. I know some students have gone back into education after their being set free while others have gone to work for humane societies or contributed time and money to conservation organizations. One went on to receive a master’s degree in nature writing.Science and humane education help the prisoners connect with values that they otherwise would at have done. It opens the door to understanding, trust, cooperation and hope. There’s a large population of people to whom science could mean a lot, if only they could have access to it. The class helps me, too. I get as much out of it as the students and it has made me a better teacher.25. The author’s course is welcomed by the prisoners because___A. they have to earn the right to attend itB. they are curious about animals kingdomC. they feel it easier to get along with animalsD. they are more familiar with animal behavior26. Instead of telling yourself “That’s a nice shirt, but I can’t afford it,” change the message to “That will look great with my black pants when I can afford it.”___37___.Of course, everyone complains sometimes. But the less frequently you complain, the better you will feel.2. Distance yourself___38___. Excuse yourself and go somewhere quiet, somewhere outdoors in the fresh air. Think of something pleasant before returning. You have to take this seriously because negative people can and will pull you into the quicksand.3. Don’t try to change complainersIf you find yourself trapped in a group of complainers in a meeting or at a social event, simply choose silence. Let their words bounce off you while you think of something else. Attempting to stop the complaining can make you a target. ___39___. If someone says, “I hate Mondays, weekends are too short,” try to think. “I’m glad I rested up over the weekend, so I’m ready to make some improvement on that big project”.4. ___40___When someone is shouting at you angrily, throw the responsibility back at them by asking, “So what do you intend to do about it?” In most cases, complainers don’t really want a solution. They just want to speak them out. If you make them aware that they themselves have to find the solutions, they will leave you alone and find someone else to complain to. If so, you will be happy.A. Find solutionsB. Change responsibilityC. You have got a lot of companyD. By doing this, it will lead to positive behaviorsE. Whenever possible, escape from negative conversationsF. But you can redirect the discussion in your own mindG. In die freezer, of course. That's what scientists might have thoughtwhen they were looking for a safe place to store ice from mountain glaciers from around the world. They‟ve decided to store ice in Antarctica because global warming is causing some of the glaciers in places like the Alps to melt.Jerome Chappellaz of the French National Centre for Scientific Research is involved in creating an ice vault (地下室)there. He says: “We are probably the only scientific community whose sample (样本) is in danger of disappearing from the face of the planet. If you work on rocks or on tree rings, the raw material is still here and will be for many centuries."And why do scientists need to study ice from the Alps, for example? Ice formed on the top of a mountain is made of snow accumulated over thousands of years. Trapped air bubbles (气泡) contain samples of the atmosphere that existed when that ice was formed. Ice is a record of climate By examining ice. we know carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is higher now than in the last three million years. Researchers use this kind of data to build computer models and try to predict what might happen in the future. The ice vault will be housed in a snow cave at the Concordia Research Station, which is operated by scientists from France and Italy. The ice samples will be sealed in bags and placed 10 meters below the surface. at a constant temperature of -50*C. This w ill put the scientists‟ minds at rest. Losing the ice samples would be a disaster, and nobody wants to see a mine of scientific knowledge lost forever in a giant pool.32. What makes Antarctica a safe place to store ice?A. It was intended to employ only one person among more than twenty candidates, I said to David, “You should not harbor too much hope for fear that you would feel terribly disappointed when you fail.” He said to me, “I am not afraid of disappointment. As long as I try, there will always be hope!”Three young men could enter the final round, which would later decide one person to be employed. Everything seemed to go quite well and David entered the final round in a week.Unexpectedly, the interview was unbelievably simple, during which the interviewer only chatted with them for a while. On the morning of the third day, David received the text from the company that he was not employed. David felt disappointed. At nightfall that day, David suddenly told me excitedly on phone that he had been employed. Greatly surprised, I asked him, “What’s the whole matter?” David told me that he received another text saying that he was employed. David felt very confused about it. Later he found out the first text sent to him was also part of the test in the interview. Three men received the same text that morning and only David’s reply was satisfying to the company. I asked my son, “How did all of you reply?” My son said, “One did not reply. The other said goodbye and I said thank you.”Only then did I know that my son’s hope came in that way.
