Early learning childcare center enrolment form
A. Children, most, membership B. Largest C. Finance campaigns D. Employs experts E. Volunteer various 答案句1:The charity uses its money to support campaigns - for example, for changes in fishing policy and so forth。

As a result of the accelerating process of globalization in various aspects, young people in different countries are more likely to enjoy the same music, films, or television programs, which invariably result in some similarities. Some people may claim that it is more a curse than a blessing for the world. One argument commonly raised that this process will be damaging to the globe diversity. When locals are bombarded with foreign products or culture, they may gradually abandon their traditional values or ways of life, so this would have a negative impact on their national or cultural identities in the long run. They even quote numerous examples such as the Eskimo in Iceland and Mosuo ethnic group in Southwest China to illustrate their point of view. While this is particularly true of some minority cultures, I want to point out that they are still special cases instead of the general rule.Generally speaking, sharing something across the globe can contribute to a deeper mutual understanding between different nations. For example, a piece of country music by John Denver may well shed light on the peaceful daily life of Americans while a pop song by Cui Jian may introduce to Westerners a much more familiar China. What is more, an experience of some alien cultures may encourage more appreciation of the local ones, rather than assimilation or malfunction. There is overwhelming evidence on this when we consider japan, or China, or even the US, which tend to incorporate theinternational elements into the local. To conclude, I am quite optimistic about the prospect of an increasingly similar world. Of course, some minority groups may be put at a disadvantage for they cannot receive equal attention as the superpowers. So I also advocate that governments or other bodies should make efforts to bring these minorities into the international horizon.B卷参考范文Knowledge is power, Francis bacon wrote long ago. Education has a key to play in one’s growth and a nation’s development.Education is the driving force of productivity. Keeping this in mind, numerous countries and governments are paying closer attention to the cultivation of talents. People differ greatly in their views as to how to wisely allocate educational budget, some people assert that instead of supporting other subjects, national investment in science is desirable. As I see it, government should place equal stress on both science and arts.Granted, plenty of evidence and arguments could be easily found to prove that it is advisable for a nation to subsidize science. For a start, the competition among different countries, to some extent, amounts to the competition of gifted people. Science and technology is the stimulating factor of the development of productivity. Large amounts of talents could inject new life into a nation’s prosperity. Besides, in comparison with art students, those who are better equipped with science knowledge such as computer, business and accounting could create more commercial value.Nevertheless, it is rather superficial to simply say that national budget should be only restricted to science investment. The mightiness of a nation involves many aspects and the cultivati on of good citizens or talents is to realize one’s comprehensive development. The construction of a country needs enterprisers, mathematicians and scientist, yet, on no account can we ignore the immense value of artists, writers, musicians. In addition to science subjects, literature, history, philosophy, music, art and PE should also become the aim of education. Literature strengthens one’s cultural deposit, history deepens one’s insight into life, philosophy fosters one’s analytical thinking, music moulds one’s temperament, art cultivates one’s artistic eye and PE enhances one’s health index. In these senses, art still deserves enough attachment and support. Art talents are indispensable to the betterment of a country.Overall, I re-affirm my conviction that education should not have too much utilitarian, conversely, it needs to render more concerns over one’s spiritual growth and character-training. Ideal educational policy should place equal significance on science investment and other subjects.

Part 1Do you like trees?Sample 1:Yes, I like trees because whenever I see those green trees, I feel refreshed and comfortable. For example, I would like to look at the trees outside my window to have my eyes relaxed. Trees can beautify the environment, which helps me feel better, and that is why I love to have trees around my house.Sample 2:Yeah, I do. And uh, I don’t really think there’s anything not to like about them! You know, they look nice, they add more colour to a place, um… so yeah I think trees are great! What kind of trees do you like?I prefer those big trees with plenty of green leaves, such as oak and pine. Ever-green trees are my favorite one because I can enjoy their beauty all the year around. I also like trees which have special sweet smell like camphor, for they are not only beautiful scenery but also bring me good smell. What kind of trees is popular in your country?Well, generally speaking, plane tree is the most common kind and people can see them anywhere across the country, because they are suitable for the weather in most areas in China. In the north part of China, there are large white birch forests. And in the south area, it is popular to plant banyan along the streets in cities and countryside.Part 2Describe an ambition you have not achieved yet.You should sayWhat the ambition isWhy you wanted to achieve the ambitionWhat you did in order to achieve the ambitionAnd explain why you have not achieved the ambition yet.I am sorry to say that one of the biggest ambitions I have not achieved was getting accepted into Cambridge University. This was my high school goal. Cambridge University is the top university in the world and when you graduate you are usually guaranteed a very very very good job. Also the alumni get high paying jobs and possibly a good government job.If I got accepted into Cambridge University, this would have made my parents proud, because actually my father graduated from there and he has a good job. In China parents love to brag about their children and I wanted to give them something to brag about back then.I did a lot to get accepted. For example, I went to a lot of training centers in order to get a high score on the IELTS exam. I also read a lot of strategic books on how to score high. Unfortunately, I did not score high enough. Since I am from_______, it is a fierce competition to get a score in the IELTS examination. I learned later on that this was only the first step in achieving a good degree. That is why I am taking the IELTS today. So I am sad to say that I did not get accepted into Cambridge University ______ months ago, but that was only the beginning to my path to success.Part 3Do you think children should have ambition?Of course, but they should be able to choose the goal and it should be realistic. For example, when I was young, I had several kinds of ambitions. My first goal was to play the guitar. I wanted to play the guitar, because I saw a video on TV and I wanted to be a star like the person on TV, but it never happened. Then I wanted to learn how to dance and I did it. The last goal was to learn how to swim and I did that. Even though these goals were simple to achieve, they still kept me busy. I also think that if children don’t have some kind of ambitions they will be under achievers. I actually read about this on yahoo. Some scientist in America did a study and discovered that if children set a goal and don’t achieve it, it is actually good for them because it teaches them how to win and lose. I find this strange, but I think it is actually true. Do parents in your country want their children to have ambitions?Yeah, for sure. I think most parents are very happy to see their children express ambitions. But I should also add that if the ambition doesn't accord with their own hopes for their child's future, then parents might not be so supportive. For instance, if, let's say, a child's ambition is to be a dancer or artist or something like that, then it's probable that many parents might try to quell such aspirations, as those kinds of careers are very difficult to succeed in, and I mean, no parent wants to see their children struggling through life.Is ambition important?Yeah, I'd say it is. You know, it gives you focus, instead of simply just drifting through life aimlessly. But it doesn't necessarily have to be a big ambition. I mean, some people's ambition might just be to raise a family, you know, it doesn't always have to be something grand like becoming the next Steve Jobs. But as long as you have some kind of ambition, that's the important thing. Are your friends ambitious?Yeah, I suppose they are in they own way. Um…and if I give you a few examples, one of them wants to start a shop online, um, and another friend….what does she wanna do again?! Oh yeah, she wants to start her own fashion label, which is pretty cool! So I'd say they are pretty ambitious,Is it always good to be ambitious?Um…I think as long as it drives you in a positive way, and doesn't cause harm to others, then it is, yeah. So it really kind of depends on what the ambition is. You know, if a person has evil intentions, then being ambitious could have disastrous consequences, as history can attest to.What should be done to achieve ambition? In my opinion there are three important things need to be done in order to achieve one’s ambitions. The first thing is to have a date when they will achieve their goal. For example, people learn how to drive a car. People need to plan if it takes 3 months, 6 months or even a year. The second thing is practice. Most goals are physical and you need to practice such as playing sports well. People have to practice I am pretty sure Kobe Bryant practiced a lot before entering the NBA. The last thing I can think of is money. Most goals need money. For example, if I got accepted into Beijing University I would have still needed money in order to graduate. Also even if somebody wants to master a video game, it takes money either to buy the game or to pay for electricity to run their computer. So in conclusion, I would say planning, practice and money are all needed to achieve an ambition. What are the difficulties in the process of achieving ambition? As I mentioned before there are three important things to achieving an ambition. Planning, practice and money. Let me go into more detail about these. First, even if you plan there are always some kind of circumstances that effect the time line like a death, holiday, test date, etc. Sometimes people don’t have choice about a date and they get what they get. Practice also might not work. Some people are not good at some things. For example, my friend tried to get her driver’s license and she couldn’t pass the driving test. She practiced, practiced and practiced but she failed the test. The last thing is money. People have to budget their money and not everybody is rich, so some people have to save up for a long time in order to achieve their goal such as going on vacation. My parents have been saving up for a long time to take a trip to America and after 5 years they are going and I know for a fact they wanted to go 5 years ago.。

Early learning childcare center enrolment form
Personal details: Q1,题⼲出现age,反推答案句为表达年龄的句式,重点听‘how old…your daughter’s age is…’
She’s three now but she turns four next month….I’ll put four down,以转折后信息为准,答案为4。
It’s 46 Wombat Road, that’s W-O-M-B-A-T.

Nobel

Alfred NobelThe man behind the Nobel PrizeA Since 1901, the Nobel Prize has been honoring men and women from all comers of the globe for outstanding achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and for work in peace. The foundations for the prize were laid in 1895 when Alfred Nobel wrote his lost will, leaving much of his wealth to the establishment of the Nobel Prize.B Alfred Nobel was born in Stockholm on October 21. 1833. His father Immanuel Nobel was an engineer and inventor who built bridges and buildings in Stockholm. In connection with his construction work Immanuel Nobel also experimented with different techniques for blasting rocks. Successful in his industrial and business ventures, ImmanuelNobel was able, in 1842, to bring his family to St. Petersburg. There, his sons were given a first class education by private teachers. The training included natural sciences, languages and literature. By the age of 17 Alfred Nobel was fluent in Swedish, Russian, French, English and German. His primary interests were in English literature and poetry as well as in chemistry and physics. Alfred's father, who wanted his sonsto join his enterprise as engineers, disliked Alfred's interest inpoetry and found his son rather introverted.C In order to widen Alfred's horizons his father sent him abroad for further training in chemical engineering. During a two year period Alfred Nobel visited Sweden, Germany. France and the United States. In Paris, the city he came to like best, he worked in the privatelaboratory of Professor T. J. Pelouze, a famous chemist. There he metthe young Italian chemist Ascanio Sobrero who, three years earlier, had invented nitroglycerine, a highly explosive liquid. But it was considered too dangerous to be of any practical use. Although its explosive power greatly exceeded that of gunpowder, the liquid would explode in a very unpredictable manner if subjected to heat and pressure. Alfred Nobel became very interested in nitroglycerine and how it couldbe put to practical use in construction work. He also realized that the safety problems had to be solved and a method had to be developed forthe controlled detonation of nitroglycerine.D After his return to Sweden in 1863, Alfred Nobel concentrated on developing nitroglycerine as an explosive. Several explosions, including one (1864) in which his brother Kmil and several other personswere killed, convinced the authorities that nitroglycerine production was exceedingly dangerous. They forbade further experimentation with nitroglycerine within the Stockholm city limits and Alfred Nobel had to move his experimentation to a barge anchored on Lake Malaren. Alfred was not discouraged and in 1864 he was able to start mass production of nitroglycerine. To make the handling of nitroglycerine safer Alfred Nobel experimented with different additives. He soon found that mixing nitroglycerine with kieselguhr would turn the liquid into a paste which could be shaped into rods of a size and form suitable for insertion into drilling holes. In 1867 he patented this material under die name of dynamite. To be able to detonate the dynamite rods he also invented a detonator (blasting cap) which could be ignited by lighting a fuse. These inventions were made at the same time as the pneumatic drill came into general use. Together these inventions drastically reduced the cost of blasting rock, drilling tunnels, building canals and many other forms of construction work.E The market for dynamite and detonating caps grew very rapidly and Alfred Nobel also proved himself to be a very skillful entrepreneur and businessman.Over the years he founded factories and laboratories in some 90 different places in more than 20 countries. Although he lived in Paris much of his life he was constantly traveling. When he was not traveling or engaging in business activities Nobel himself worked intensively in his various laboratories, first in Stockholm and later in other places. He focused on the development of explosives technology as well as other chemical inventions, including such materials as synthetic rubber and leather, artificial silk, etc. By the time of his death in 18% he had 355 patents.F Intensive work and travel did not leave much time for aprivate life. At the age of 43 he was feeling like an old man. At this time he advertised in a newspaper"Wealthy, highly-educated elder gentleman seeks lady of mature age, versed in languages, as secretary and supervisor of household." The most qualified applicant turned out to be an Austrian woman. Countess Bertha Kinsky. After working a very short time for Nobel she decided to return to Austria to marry Count Arthur von Suttner. In spite of this Alfred Nobel and Bertha von Suttner remained friends and kept writing letters to each other for decades. Over the years Bertha von Suttner became increasingly critical of the arms race. She wrote a famous book, Lay Down Your Arms and became a prominent figure in the peace movement. No doubt this influenced Alfred Nobel when he wrote his final will which was to include a Prize forpersons or organizations who promote peace. Several years after thedeath of Alfred Nobel, the Norwegian Storting (Parliament) decided to award the 1905 Nobel Peace Prize to Bertha von Suttner.G Alfred Nobel died in San Remo, Italy, on December 10, 1896. When his will was opened it came as a surprise that his fortune was tobe used for Prizes in Physics, Chemistry. Physiology or Medicine, Literature and Peace. The executors of his will were two young engineers, Ragnar Sohlman and Rudolf Lilljequist. They set about forming the Nobel Foundation as an organization to take care of the financial assets left by Nobel for this purpose and to coordinate the work of the Prize-Awarding Institutions. This was not without its difficulties since the will was contested by relatives and questioned by authorities in various countries.H Alfred Nobel's greatness lay in his ability to combine the penetrating mind of the scientist and inventor with the forward-looking dynamism of the industrialist. Nobel was very interested in social and peace-related issues and held what were considered radical views in his era. He had a great interest in literature and wrote his own poetry and dramatic works. The Nobel Prizes became an extension d a fulfillment of his lifetime interests.Questions 1-6Do the following statements agree with the information given in Reading Passage 1?In boxes 1-6 on your answer sheet, writeTRUE if the statement is trueFALSE if the statement is falseNOT GIVEN if the information is not given in the passage1 The first Nobel Prize was awarded in 1895.2 Nobel's father wanted his son to have better education than what he had had.3 Nobel was an unsuccessful businessman.4 Bertha von Suttner was selected by Nobel himself for the first peace prize.5 The Nobel Foundation was established after the death of Nobel6 Nobel's social involvement was uncommon in the 1800’s.Questions 7-13Complete the notes below using NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS from the passage.Write your answers in boxes 7-13 on your answer sheet.Table 1Education:Having accumulated a great fortune in his business, Nobel's father determined to give his son the best education and sent him abroad to be trained in 7 During Nobel's study in Paris, he worked in a private laboratory, where he came in contact with a young Scientist (engineer) 8 and his invention nitroglycerine, a more powerful explosive than 9Table 2Benefits in construction works:Nobel became really interested in this new explosive and experimented on it.

1.Do you usually write by hand or write using a computer( typewriter orword-processor)?2.Nowadays, how do most people write things?3.Do you think computers might one day replace handwriting?4.When do children begin to write in your country?5.How did you learn to write?6.Do you think handwriting is very important (nowadays)?7.How can children today improve (or, practice) their handwriting?8.What impression does a person's handwriting have on other people? 1.I prefer writing on the computer rather than writing by hand. Though I do enjoy journal writing with pen and colored pencils from time to time, I have always “pooh-poohed” the people who say the pen is more directly connected to the brain than the keyboard.2.People usually write on their computers or Ipad, because it's faster than writing by hands. Moreover, they don't have to worry bout spelling as much!3.No, I think we will always write by hand. I think it’s an important skill, and schools will continue to teach children to write by hand before they learn to type.4.Children in my country are supposed to be able to read and write their ABC's by the time they hit the kindergarten or preschool. All kids are different, generally most kids start to learn writing at the age of about 3 or 4.5.At first I read, then I learn to imitate what I saw, first taught by my parents, then teachers when I entered the elementary school.6.NO. My handwriting is horrible, but it's not about ability, it's about care. Why is doctors' handwriting infamously atrocious? Because they have better things to worry about.7.Practice makes perfect. Have them trace a model. Let them treat it like homework and spend 30 minutes or more everyday working on it, at first. Besides, parents and teachers should encourage them to slow down when handwriting assignments.8.There is a famous Chinese saying, "you are what you write", so a person's handwriting may strike other people as sighs of his/her personality.2016年5-8月雅思口语Part1话题:Birthday题目列表1.How do children celebrate birthdays in your country?2.How did you celebrate your last birthday?3.What kinds of birthday gifts do you like to receive?4.Is there a difference between the way you celebrated your birthday in the past and in the present? 1.Children are fond of parties and lovely gifts.

4月雅思真题作文(2)2016年4月21日雅思真题大作文“An increase in the production of consumer goods results in damage to the natural environment. Why is this case? What can be done to reduce this problem?”
The high demand of consumer goods has led to the depletion of natural resources as well as environmental degradation. How to reverse this situation should be paid more attention and both the government and individuals should take responsibility for this. The past decades have witnessed the expansion of human population, which results in the ever-growing requirement for various products such as food, clothing. Not only does this cause the decrease of natural resources, but also contributes to environmental deterioration. An example of this is that people cut down more trees for disposable chopsticks and furniture, leading to deforestation in many areas. This further causes some problems like soil erosion, droughts and change in temperature.Another reason is that people lack environmental awareness.Otherwise, they would not live a throw-away life and cause some avoidable waste or pollution. A large number of people have not yet realized the importance of recycling, nor are they conscious of the households appliances can end up in landfill sites and these non-biodegradable products can have a destructive effect on the environment. To cope with this problem, governments should firstly try to raise public's awareness for environmental protection and recycling. Besides, they should also invest heavily in some renewable energy resources such as nuclear, solar or wind energy. Meanwhile, ordinary people should make an effort to consume less and recycle more and classify rubbish in order to reduce the damage of waste. To sum up, the increase of world population and insufficient environmental consciousness are associated with the issue stated. And to combat with it,every member in the society should take actions.2016年4月30日雅思真题大作文People's shopping habits depend more on the age group they belong to than any other factor. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Some people think that age is the main factor that affects people's shopping habits but I think this is only true in some cases.Generally, people would consider what to buy and where to buy by referring to their peer's choices. Children mostly tend to buy things like snacks and toys for fun because these are other kids'favorite. In contrast, when one turns to 40,they might spend more of their savings on family-oriented purchases like groceries and home appliances. Moreover, as age increases, one likes to rely on a few trustworthy shops while younger people are more adventurous and they are inclined to try new stores. However, age factor is inadequate for explaining one'sshopping preference.Financial condition is,in fact, more important. Some young adults who are struggling with tuition fees often look for discounts in malls, but the ones from rich families will be the opposite. Also, gender is another factor that can determine how one spends money.Typically, men are less likely hesitant when they are buying clothes whereas women would spend far more time in comparing before they make the final decision .Men mainly consider shopping as a way to buy necessary items but women would see it as entertainment so that's why they love to stay in a mall for the whole day.To conclude, age is a common factor that shapes a person's shopping habits.but it is certainly not the crucial reason to explain most people s shopping behavior as financial condition and gender can have stronger impacts as well.【2016年4月雅思真题作文】。

The words can be used ONCE ONLY. Mark the letter for each word onImagine a world without writing. Obviously there would be no books: no novels, no encyclopedias, no cookbooks, no textbooks, no telephone books, no scriptures, no diaries, no travel guides. There would be no ball-points, no typeswriters, no computers, no Internet, no magazines, no movie credits, no shopping lists, no newspapers, no tax returns. But such__________ (31) of subjects almost miss the point. The world we live in has been indelibly marked by the written word,__________ (32) by the technology of writing over thousands of years. Ancient kings proclaimed their authority and__________ (33) their laws in writing. Scribes administered great empires by writing, their knowledge of recording and retrieving information essential to governing complex societies. Religious traditions were passed on through __________ (34), and spread to others, in writing. Scientific and technological progress was achieved and __________ (35) through writing. Accounts in trade and commerce could be kept because of writing. Nearly every step of civilization has been mediated through writing. A world without writing would bear __________ (36) resemblance to the one we now live in. Writing is a __________ (37) necessity to the societies anthropologists call civilizations. A civilization is distinguished from other societies by the complexity of its social organization, by its construction of cities and large public buildings, and by the economic specialization of its members, many of whom are not __________ (38) involved in food procurement or production.A civilization, with its taxation and tribute systems, its trade, and its public works, requires a __________ (39) system of record keeping. And so the early civilizations of Egypt, China, and (probably) India all developed a system of writing. Only the Peruvian civilization of the Incas and their predecessors did not use writing but __________ (40) invented a system of keeping records on knotted color-coded strings known as quipu.PART V READING COMPREHENSION [35 MIN] SECTION A MUTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONSIn this section there are three passages followed by ten multiple choice questions. For each multiple choice question, there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the onethat you think is the best answer. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET TWO.PASSAGE ONE(1)When I was twenty-seven years old, I was a mining-broker’s clerk in San Francisco, and an expert in all the details of stock traffic, I was alone in the world, and had nothing to depend upon but my wits and a clean reputation; but these were setting my feet in the road to eventual fortune, and I was content with the prospect. My time was my own after the afternoon board, Saturdays, and I was accustomed to putting it in on a little sail-boat on the bay. One day I ventured too far, and was carried out to sea. Just at nightfall, when hope was about gone, I was picked up by a small ship which was bound for London. It was a long and stormy voyage, and they made me work my passage without pay, as a common sailor. When I stepped ashore in London my clothes were ragged and shabby, and I had only a dollar in my pocket. This money fed and sheltered me twenty-four hours. During the next twenty-four I went without food and shelter.(2)About ten o’clock on the following morning, dirty and hungry, I was dragging myself along Portland Place, when a child that was passing, towed by a nurse-maid, tossed a big pear——minus one bite——into the gutter. I stopped, of course, and fastened my desiring eye on that muddy treasure. My mouth watered for it, my stomach craved it, my whole being begged for it. But every time I made a move to get it some passing eye detected my purpose, and of course I straightened up then, and looked indifferent and pretended that I hadn’t been thinking about the pear at all. This same thing kept happening and happening, and I couldn’t get the pear.(3)I was just getting desperate enough to brave all the shame, and to seize it, when a window behind me was raised, and a gentleman spoke out of it, saying: “ Step in here, please.”(4)I was admitted by a man servant, and shown into a sumptuous room where a couple of elderly gentlemen were sitting. They sent away the servant, and made me sit down. They had just finished their breakfast, and the sight of the remains of it almost overpowered me. I could hardly keep my wits together in the presence of that food, but as I was not asked to sample it,I had to bear my trouble as best as I could.(5)Now, something had been happening there a little before, which I did not know anything about until a good many days afterwards, but I will tell you about it now. Those two old brothers had been having a pretty hot argument a couple of days before, and had ended by agreeing to decide it by a bet, which is the English way of settling everything.(6)You will remember that the Bank of England once issued two notes of a million pounds each, to be used for a special purpose connected with some public transaction with a foreign country. For some reason or other only one of these had been used and canceled; the other still lay in the vaults of the Bank. Well, the brothers, chatting along, happened to get to wondering what might be the fate of a perfectly honest and intelligent stranger who should be turned adrift in London without a friend, and with no money but that million-pound bank-note, and no way to account for his being in possession of it. BrotherA said he would starve to death; BrotherB said he wouldn’t. Brother A said he couldn’t offer it at a bank or anywhere else, because he would be arrested on the spot. So they went on disputing till Brother B said he would bet twenty thousand pounds that the man would live thirty days, anyway, on that million, and keep out of jail, too. Brother A took him up. Brother B went down to the Bank and bought that note. Then he dictated a letter, which one of his clerks wrote out in a beautiful round hand, and then the two brothers sat at the window a whole day watching for the right man to give it to.(7)I finally became the pick of it.41. In Para. 1, the phrase “set my feet” probably means __________.A. put me asideB. start my journeyC. prepare meD. let me walk42. It can be concluded from Para. 2 that __________.A. the man wanted to maintain dignity though starvedB. the man could not get a proper chance to eat the pearC. The man did not really want the pear since it was dirtyD. it was very difficult for the man to get the pear43. Compared with Brother A, Brother B was more __________ towards the effect of theone-million-pound bank-note on a total strange.A. neutralB. negativeC. reservedD. positivePASSAGE TWO(1)The concept of peace is a very important one in cultures all over the world. Think about how we greet people. In some language, the phrases for greetings contain the word for peace. In some cultures we greet people by shaking hands or with another gesture to show that we are not carrying weapons --- that we come in peace. And there are certain symbols which people in very different cultures recognize as representing peace. Let’s look at a few of them. The dove(2)The dove has been a symbol of peace and innocence for thousands of years in many different cultures. In ancient Greek mythology it was a symbol of love and the renewal of life. In ancient Japan a dove carrying a sword symbolized the end of war.(3)There was a tradition in Europe that if dove flew around a house where someone was dying then their soul would be at peace. And there are legends which say that devil can turn himself into any bird except for a dove. In Christian art, the dove was used to symbolized the Holy Ghost and was often painted above Christ’s head.(4)But it was Pablo Picasso who made the dove a modern symbol of peace when he used it on a poster for the World Peace Congress in 1949.The rainbow(5)The rainbow is another ancient and universal symbol, often representing the connection between human beings and their gods. In Greek mythology it was associated with Iris, the goddess who brought messages from the gods on Mount Olympus. In Scandinavian mythology the rainbow was a bridge between the gods and the earth. In the Bible a rainbow showed Noah that the Biblical flood was finally over, and that God had forgiven his people. In the Chinese tradition, the rainbow is a common symbol for marriage because the colours represent the union of yin and yang. Nowadays the rainbow is used by many popular movements for peace and the environment, representing the possibility of a better world in the future andpromising sunshine after rain.Mistletoe(6)This plant was sacred in many cultures, generally representing peace and love. Most people know of the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe at Christmas time, which probablycomes from Scandinavian mythology. The goddess Freya’s son was killed by an arrow made of mistletoe, so, in honour of him, she declared that it would always be a symbol of peace. It was often hung in doorways as a sign of friendship.(7)The ancient Druids believed that hanging mistletoe in your doorway could protect you from evil spirits. Tribes would stop fighting for a period of time if they found a tree with mistletoe. But you will never see mistletoe in a Christian church - it is banned because of its associations with pagan religion and superstition. The olive branch(8)The olive tree has always been a valuable source of food and oil. In Greek mythology, the goddess Athena gave the olive tree to the people of Athens, who showed their gratitude by naming the city after her. But no one knows for sure when or why it began to symbolize peace. There is probably a connection with ancient Greece. Wars between states were suspended during the Olympics Games, and the winners were given crowns of olive branches. The symbolism may come from the fact that the olive tree takes a long time to produce fruit, so olives could only be cultivated successfully in long periods of peace. Whatever the history, the olive branch is a part of many modern flags symbolizing peace and unity. One well-known example is the United Nations symbol. The ankh(9)The ankh is an ancient symbol which was adopted by the hippie movement in the 1960s to represent peace and love. It was found in many Asian cultures, but is generally associated with ancient Egypt. It represented life and immortality. Egyptians were buried with an ankh, so that they could continue to live in the “afterworld”. The symbol was also found along the sides of the Nile, which gave life to the people. They believed that the ankh could control the flow of the river and make sure that there was always enough water.44.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. Concept of Peace.B. Origin of Peace Symbols.C. Popular Peace Symbols.D. Cultural Difference of Peace.45.The rainbow represents the connection between human beings and their gods in all thefollowing countries EXCEPT __________.A. SwedenB. GreeceC. FinlandD. The second has us looking to the criminal justice system to cure behavior that is as much as anything the result of despair.(3)The welfare example is well known. We don’t want poor people to live in squalor or their children to be malnourished. But we also don’t want to subsidize the indolence of people who are too lazy to work. The first impulse leads us to provide housing, food stamps, medical care and a cash stipend for families in need. The second gets us to think about “workforce”. (4)We’ve been thinking about it for two reasons: the “nanny” problems of two high-ranking government officials (who hired undocumented foreigners as household helpers, presumably because they couldn’t find Americans to do the work) and President Clinton’s proposal to put a two-year limit on welfare.(5)Maybe something useful will come of Clinton’s idea, but I’m not all that hopeful. It looks to me like one more example of trying to manipulate people into taking care of themselves.(6)On the criminal justice side, we hope to make punishment tough enough to discourage crime but not so tough as to clog our prisons with relatively minor offenders. Too short a sentence, we fear, will create contempt for the law. Too long a sentence will take up costly space better used for the violent and unremorseful.(7)Not only can we never find the “perfect” punishment, our search for optimum penalties is complicated by our desire for fairness: to let the punishment fit the crime. The problem is that almost any punishment --- even the disgrace of being charged with a crime --- is sufficient to deter the middle class, while for members of the underclass, probation may be translated as “I beat it”.(8)So how can you use the system --- welfare or criminal justice --- to produce the behavior we want? The answer, I suspect is: You can’t.(9)We keep trying to use welfare and prison to change people --- to make them think and behave the way we do --- when the truth is the incentives work only for those who already think the way we do: who view today’s action with an eye on the future.(10)We will take lowly work (if that is all that’s available) because we believe we can make bad jobs work for us. We avoid crime not because we are better people but because we see getting caught as a future-wrecking disaster. We are guided by a belief that good things will happen for us in the future if we take proper care of the present. Even under the worst of circumstances, we believe we are in control of our lives.(11)And we have trouble understanding that not everybody believes as we believe. The welfare rolls, the prison and the mean street of our cities are full of people who have given up on their future. Without hope for the future, hard work at a low-paid job makes no sense. Working hard in school, or pleasing a boss, or avoiding pregnancy makes no sense. The deadly disease is hopelessness. The lawlessness and poverty are only the obvious symptoms.(12)I’m not advocating that we stop looking for incentives to move poor people toward self-sufficiency or that we stop punishing people for criminal behavior. There will always be some people who need help and some who deserve to be in jail.(13)All I’m saying is that the long-term answer both to welfare and the crime that plagues our communities is not to fine tune the welfare and criminal justice systems but to prevent our children from getting the disease of despair.(14)If we encourage our young people to believe in the future, and give them solid evidence for believing, we’ll find both crime and poverty shrinking to manageable proportions.48. What is the author’s attitude towards Clinton’s proposal to welfare?A. Pessimistic.B. Optimistic.C. Suspicious.D. Sarcastic.49. Red Nose DayRed Nose Day (RND) is a well-known event in the UK. The aim of the day is to raise money for Comic Relief. This is a charity that helps people in need in Africa and in the UK.Comic Relief was started in 1985 by Richard Curtis. He wrote the famous films "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and "Notting Hill". Richard started Comic Relief in response to the severe famine in Ethiopia. It's called Red Nose Day as on this day many people buy a plastic red nose to wear! The money made from selling red noses goes to the charity.Red Nose Day takes place every two years in the spring. It is now so well established that many people consider it to be an unofficial national holiday. The slogan for the last RND was "Do Something Funny for Money." The money that was collected was used to help fund projects in such areas as education and mental health.Money-raising events take place on this day all over the country and many schools participate.People also donate money by post, in banks, by phone using a credit card and online. In the evening of Red Nose Day atelethon takes place on the BBC TV channels. This is like a television marathon(马拉松)that shows some of the events of the day and reports how the money raised will be spent.
