Something about the author: David Nicholls
He is a famous writer and scriptwriter from England. He was once an editor of musical and actor after graduation from university. Later on, he became a professional writer. Starter for Ten is his first novel which was adapted into movie in 2006. One Day is his second novel published in 2009. It gained great success as soon as it came out. And it was adapted into screenplay by the author and released in August 2011.

Dexter: 1. characteristic：handsome and attracting, arrogant, be of good stock, kind. 2.career: English teacher in India—— successful television presenter—— unemployed for some time——a manager in his friend’s restaurant— —own his own café shop. 3.privite life: hook up with different girls for many years——fall in love with a beautiful girl named Sylvie and then get married——divorce his wife due to her affair with another man—— marry Emma.——start a relationship with a staff in his café after Emma’s death.
Two Protagonists of the Novel
Emma: 1.characteristic :a plain, smart, cynical girl 2.occupation: a writer and actress——a waitress in restaurant——a teacher——a professional writer. 3.private life: carry a torch for Dexter— —date Ian ——have an affair with the headmaster——date a French guy ——marry Dexter. 4.Emma died at her 38.
Stage 5: reunion At the wedding of Emma's former roommate, Emma and Dexter meet again. Emma admits that she wants Dexter back. At this point of time she has just ended an affair with her headmaster, Dexter has fallen in love with another woman, Sylvie, who is pregnant. At this reunion, Dexter invites Emma, who is disappointed by the situation, to his wedding. Though they are friends again, they cannot go back to the past.
Stage 6 : lovers finally Emma and Dexter form a relationship and are happy together, and get married, however Emma wants a child. The couple find themselves frustrated by the failing attempts to have a child. Dexter however is able to open a deli-cafe and finds himself on his way back to being successful again. Stage 7 part forever On the anniversary of the day they met after graduation and the day they got together, Emma and Dexter have an appointment to see a house. While travelling there, Emma has a bike accident and dies.

Stage 1: almost one night lover Dexter and Emma spend the night together following their graduation from Edinburgh University in 1988. They talk about how they will be once they are 40. While they do not become romantically involved completely, this is the beginning of their friendship. Stage 2:close friend Dexter goes to India to find himself while Emma stays in London to pursue her dream. They write to each other and call each other very often though in the name of friend.

About Life
You can get lost rather than you should get lost. Dexter often says, it is not big deal. Everyone can get lost sometime. I think it is more like an excuse. Just because this excuse, Dexter lets himself go, and make many mistakes when he was young. Do not be blinded by the present success. Dexter is so arrogant when he made a little success working as a television presenter and cannot believe it when he was fired because he was too old.
Don’t always make compromise. Emma is that kind of girl who always make compromise both in love and life. She doesn’t love Ian at all but lives with him for about 8 year. She wants to be a writer but works as a waitress in restaurant for many years. Luckily, she changes at last, and her life becomes totally different. Don’t forget where you are rooted in. Fun is different from happiness.
Stage3: best friend. they are drawn together closer through a holiday together . Stage4: break up Emma is busy with her work and spends most of her time with her boyfriend Ian. Therefore, she no longer pays that much attention to Dexter as she used to be. Dexter reaches the summit of his career. He makes a lot of so-called friends and develops drug and drunk problems. The friendship between Emma and Dexter grows more and more difficult, after Emma is constantly hurt by Dexter who attempts to hide his feelings for her from both her and himself. After being treated rudely by Dexter at a restaurant, Emma breaks up the friendship.
