the ground for the keys, literally.Indeed, when she opened the door to leave the house at11pm for the movies despite my words,I actually wrestled my16-year-old daughter to the ground.I did not know how to deal with a rebellious(叛逆的)teenager. We are a family of strong wills, from the top down. All my kids had pushed and argued.Everyone“kind of”followed the rules. As they got older, especially when they hit high school,I saw the power shifting, but it hadn’t been so obvious.I had not seen much in-your-face rebellion.Until this happened.I called Amy Speidel,a wise and practical parenting expert. She stayed on the phone with me and listened to my wild complaint about my disrespectful kid.She listened for almost two hours and then gave me some suggestions.Amy told me that my daughter’s behavior was“developmentally appropriate”-she was supposed to test the boundaries.Amy also said that it was great that my daughter would be able to stand up for herself in a relationship that wasn’t working. Those comments really made me feel awful.I hadn’t considered anything positive abouther behavior—but outside of our mother-daughter relationship,I would never want to devalue my daughter’s strong will. After talking with Amy,I realized that I was the one who needed help understanding discipline vs control.Honestly,I did hate that the responsibility was on me.I wanted permission to scream and punish. But I listened to Amy and here’s what I learned.1.My daughter’s behavior was normal. That eased my fears that I had raised a terrible human and failed as a mother.2.My daughter’s strong personality was a strength. That revelation was a huge gift.I value her qualities but don’t want them used against me.I will soften my response and listen to her.3.I went crazy. In fact,I crossed a line. And that happens. But I learned to apologize and reset so that we could move forward. My job, therefore,is to learn new responses that offer my daughter options and realistic consequences, not empty threats. And hopefully, this will change my relationship with my daughter.24.What is the actual reason the author had a fight with her daughter?A.The daughter wouldn’t give her the keys.B.The daughter didn’t come back until11pm.C.The daughter insisted on going out late at night.D.The daughter wanted to go to the movies with friends.25.The comments made the author feel“awful”because_______.A.she had helped her daughter to test boundariesB.she didn’t treasure the mother-daughter relationshipC.she thought Amy was criticizing her daughter’s upbringingD.she hadn’t noticed the desirable aspects of her daughter’s behavior26.After the phone call, the author learned that______.A.her daughter’s strong character should be softenedB.she should constructively deal with conflictC.her daughter should control her behaviorD.she should admit her failure as a mother27.According to Amy,what should the author say if the same situation happens again?A.“Do you really think you can just walk out the door like that?”B.“It’s not safe to be out so late. What about tomorrow afternoon?”C.“It doesn’t matter whether you go out or not.I will support you.”D.“You have been disrespectful and can’t go out tonight. Is that clear?”Laughing together is an important way for people to connect and bond. And though the causes of laughter can vary widely across individuals and groups, the sound of a laugh is usually recognizable between people belonging to different cultures. But what about animals?Do they“laugh”?And are the causes of animal and human laughter alike? In humans, people may laugh when they hear a joke,or when they see something that they think is funny, though it’s unknown if animals’intelligence includes what humans would call a sense of humor. However, many animals produce sounds during play that are unique to that pleasant social interaction.Researchers consider such vocalizations to be similar to human laughter. Recently, scientists investigated play vocalization to see how common it was among animals. The team identified65species that“laughed”while playing—most were mammals(哺乳动物),but a few bird species demonstrated playful laughter too.Reports of playful laughter were notably absent in studies describing fish, perhaps because there is some question as to whether or not play exists at all in that animal group. This new study could help scientists to analyze the origins of human laughter. But how can we identify play?Unlike fighting, play is usually repetitive and happens independently of other social behaviors, said lead study author Sasha Winkler,a doctor of biological anthropology at the University of California. When it comes to identifying it,“you know it when you see it,”Winkler told Live Science. One sign is that primates—our closest relatives—have a“play face”that is similar to the expressions of humans who are playing. When Winkler previously worked with rhesus macaques, she had noticed that the monkeys panted(喘气)quietly while playing. Many other primates are also known to vocalize during play, she said,so a hypothesis(laughter in humans is thought to have originated during play)supported by the play-related panting laughter of many primate species was put forward.People now still laugh during play, but we also integrate laughter into language and non-play behaviors, using laughter in diverse ways to express a range of emotions that may be positive or negative.Human laughter notably differs from other animals’laughter inanother important way:its volume.People broadcast their laughter loudly, often as a way of establishing inclusion.By comparison, when most animals laugh, the sound is very quiet—just loud enough to be heard by the laugher’s partner.“It’s really fascinating that so many animals have a similar function of vocalization during play,”Winkler told Live Science.“But we do have these unique parts of human laughter that are also an important area for future study."28.What is the main purpose of the passage?A.To explain causes of animal and human laughter.B.To assess complexities regarding animal laughter.C.To present findings on the existence of animal laughter.D.To analyze differences between animal and human laughter.29.What can we learn from this passage?A.Animal laughter is even noticeable in fish.B.Animal laughter is hard to recognize during play.C.People have learned to combine play with laughter.D.People laugh loudly because they want to involve others.30.What is probably the focus of future study on laughter?A.Distinctive features of human laughter.B.Different functions of animal laughter.C.The origin and development of human laughter.D.The relationship between animal laughter and intelligence.Faced with an attempt by a new chatbot to imitate(模仿)his own songs, the musician Nick Cave delivered a strong response:it was“an absolutely horrible attempt”.He understood that AI was in its babyhood, but could only conclude that the true horror might be that“it will forever be in its babyhood”.While a robot might one day be able to create a song, he wrote,it would never grow beyond“a kind of burlesque(滑稽的模仿)”,because robots-being composed of data-are unable to suffer, while songs arise out of suffering.Fans of Cave and his band will agree that his music is inimitable, but that doesn’t mean they would necessarily be able to tell the difference.A few days before Cave’s remarks, experts were asked to distinguish between four genuine artworks and their AI imitations. Their conclusions were wrong five times out of12,and they were only unitedly right in oneD.The quality of AI art dismisses concerns about intellectual property. 34.Which would be the best title for the passage?A.The Creative Thief:AI Makes Perfect ArtB.AI in Art:A Battle That Must Be FoughtC.Threat or Opportunity:The Impact of AI on ArtD.The Rise of AI Art:What It Means to Human Artists四、七选五B.This is especially so when it comes to staying fit.C.Not having a clearly defined exercise plan can hurt.D.We often wish to go back to our two-year-old selves.E.For instance, you can schedule a weekly gym visit with friends.F.Still,there’s a real disconnect between what we know and what we do.G.The most puzzling part of our inactive nature is that we don’t start out that way.五、阅读表达阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。

Since 2009, Wilson has taught thousands of people how to plant and grow their own vegetables and prepare meals with them, including onions, garlic, cucumbers, tomatoes, collard greens, squash, and eggplant.“Not only can you learn from my 35 years of doing this type of work,” Wilson said, “but you can learn from our community gardeners who are growing food in a natural way.”Wilson, the first college graduate in his family, worked with the University of Georgia for more than 20 years, bringing gardening education and programs to public housing complexes, schools and churches throughout Metro Atlanta. Through his work, he saw a great need for fresh, healthy food in low-income urban communities. When he retired in 2009, he used a portion of his retirement savings to purchase the farm and help fill the gap.“I saw the need,” Wilson said. “Plus, when you retire, you should do something you really enjoy.”He estimates with the rising price of food, people could save thousands yearly by growing their own fruits and vegetables. He also points out the health benefits that fresh produce brings.Millions of households in the US are struggling to feed their families. And this is what motivates Wilson’s efforts.“When small and disadvantaged farmers didn’t have the avenue to get rid of that produce because people were not coming out to buy, we had an opportunity to help keep them alive,” Wilson said. “We were buying food from African American farmers who did not have outlets and giving it away.”Wilson continues to offer free food to those in need at a drive-through giveaway every week, where families can secure healthy produce.Over the years, Wilson says he has hosted a lot of students in grades K-12 for farm tours and agriculturalS.T.E.M. field trips. He works with farmers and gardeners of all ages and skill levels, from preschoolers to seniors, to provide education and access to affordable produce.“ We’re more than just a farm,” he said. “We’re about justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, because at the end of the day, I want my grandchildren to have it better than what I have it today.”4.Wilson started the Metro Atlanta Urban Farm mainly to ______.A. make a livingB. pursue his careerC. promote health awarenessD. help the communities5.We can learn from the passage that ______.A. Wilson’s farm has been around for over 30 yearsB. Wilson undertakes some educational initiatives at the farmC. some small and disadvantaged farmers joined Wilson’s farmD. thousands of students have attended Wilson’s classes on farming6.What does Wilson think of his farm?A. Underestimated.B. Unexpected.C. Imperfect.D. Promising.CWhen people hear “artificial intelligence,” many envision “big data.” There’s a reason for that: some of the most important AI breakthroughs in the past decade have relied on enormous data sets. But AI is not only about large data sets, and research in “small data” approaches has grown extensively over the past decade—with so-called transfer learning as an especially promising example. Also known as “fine-tuning,” transfer learning is helpful in settings where you have little data on the task of interest but abundant data on a related problem. The way it works is that you first train a model using a big data set and then retrain slightly using a smaller data set related to your specific problem.Research in transfer learning approaches has grown impressively over the past 10 years. In a new report for Georgetown University’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET), we examined current and projected progress in scientific research across “small data” approaches. Our analysis found that transfer learning stands out as a category that has experienced the most consistent and highest research growth on average since 2010. This growth has even outpaced the larger and more established field of reinforcement learning, which in recent years has attracted widespread attention.Small data approaches such as transfer learning offer numerous advantages over more data-intensive methods. By enabling the use of AI with less data, they can bolster progress in areas where little or no data exist, such as in forecasting natural disasters that occur relatively rarely or in predicting the risk of disease for a population set that does not have digital health records.Another way of thinking about the value of transfer learning is in terms of generalization. A recurring challenge in the use of AI is that models need to “generalize” beyond their training data. Because transfer learning models work by transferring knowledge from one task to another, they are very helpful in improving generalization in the new task, even if only limited data were available. Moreover, by using pretrained models, transfer learning can speed up training time and could also reduce the amount of computational resources needed to train algorithms (算法). This efficiency is significant, considering that the process of training one large neural (神经系统的) network requires considerable energy.Despite the growth in research, transfer learning has received relatively little visibility. The existence of techniques such as transfer learning does not seem to have reached the awareness of the broader space of policy makers and business leaders in positions of making important decisions about AI funding and adoption. By acknowledging the success of small data techniques like transfer learning—and distributing resources to support their widespread use—we can help overcome some of the common misconceptions regarding the role of data in AI and facilitate innovation in new directions.7.What does the underlined word “bolster” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A. Promote.B. Seek.C. Track.D. Monitor.8.In which of the following settings can transfer learning be best applied?A. Predicting the frequency of floods in Amazon rainforest.B. Designing a program that can read handwritten documents.C. Forecasting the number of people infected with an unknown illness.D. Predicting house prices based on basic features like area and location.9.What is the writer’s attitude towards transfer learning?A. Doubtful.B. Optimistic.C. Critical.D. Unconcerned.10.Which would be the best title for the passage?A. Transfer Learning: Where Does It Best Fit?B. Small Data Are Also Crucial for Advancing AIC. Transfer Learning Powers Technological AdvancesD. Big Data vs. Small Data: Which Is the Future of AI?DCan you imagine getting a major dental procedure without novocaine (一种麻醉药)? A scientist colleague of mine recently told me, rather than use it, he used a “focus in” meditation (冥想) technique to direct all of his attention to his mouth with as much calming equanimity as he could gather. Doing so transformed the pain for a few minutes.A stream of scientific articles suggests that there are benefits in turning toward discomfort or negative emotions with acceptance. In addition, all of us can gain from finding ways to cope with stress and suffering—particularly when larger circumstances are beyond our control. As a researcher who has studied meditation for more than 20 years, I believe that the cultivation of equanimity can help. It’s important to first define the idea of turning toward discomfort. I’m not advocating for people to put themselves in dangerous positions. But when we push ourselves into challenging or embarrassing situations, much like trainers who push athletes just past their comfort zone to make gains, learning often happens. My own research indicates that meditation provides an ideal way to practice turning toward discomfort—particularly when it trains up one’s equanimity. In my laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University, we conducted several clinical trials on developing equanimity during mindfulness meditation training. This approach includes guided meditation exercises such as using a matter-of-fact voice to label uncomfortable feelings in the body or welcoming uncomfortable feelings by saying “yes” aloud each time a feeling is detected. We hired 153 stressed adults and offered them a mindfulness meditation training program with or without training in equanimity. Our equanimity skills training group had significantly better outcomes on several measures. After just 14 days of training, for example, the participants who learned equanimity skills had significantly lower biological stress responses when asked to deliver a difficult speech and solve math problems in front of experts in white lab coats. This group also had significantly lower blood pressure and stress levels. In the days after training, people introduced to equanimity exercises also reported significantly higher positive emotions and well-being throughout the day and more meaningful social interactions than participants who received mindfulness training without the equanimity component. It was as though developing equanimity had transformed their emotional reactivity to stress, helping them better appreciate and enjoy daily life’s many little positive experiences and making them more curious and open to connecting with others. We are expanding on this work in several ways—including through the development of an app that offers equanimity training on demand and with trials involving participants with stress-related gastrointestinal (胃肠的) disorders. Meanwhile other scientists are further exploring equanimity’s power. We are convinced we can each build our resilience (恢复力) on a personal level by cultivating greater acceptance of our experience—good or bad, painful or pleasant—in the present moment.11.What can be learned about equanimity?A. It is a state of mental calmness.B. It is a form of negative emotions.C. It is a replacement for novocaine.D. It is the result of mindfulness meditation.12.Which of the following is a good example of equanimity training?A. Ignoring discomfort totally.B. Detecting unusual behavior.C. Keeping emotions to oneself.D. Seeing negative feelings objectively.13.Paragraph 5 is written to show ______.A. the benefits of developing equanimityB. the procedure of mindfulness meditationC. the performances of two meditation training groupsD. the relationship between equanimity and well-being14.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A. Stress contributes to physical disorders.B. Pleasant experiences result in greater equanimity.C. People are likely to have easy access to equanimity training.D. Resilience can help people gain more acceptance of hardship.二、阅读七选五:本大题共5小题,共10分。
